Is Season 5 worth getting? Any goodies on it? I'll probably get it anyway, just to add it to my Buffy collection. And hey, it's worth it just to have, "Family." :heart Love that epi.

Well, the extras are not that great, but hey, as far as I'm concerned, it's the last season of Buffy :)

Plus, like you said, "Family"! :tara :love :willow

Okay, your avatar is distracting... where was I ? :grin

Season 5 is deffinately worth getting, the special features aren't that bad but get it because of some great eps, 'Family', 'Triangle', 'The Gift' etc also, IMO this should have been the last season on Buffy as it ended perfectly.

Thanks, BFR and LokiPromise.:kiss :bigkiss

I think I will definitely get Season 5 when it comes out, just to have certain episodes on DVD. And I agree. They should have ended Buffy with Season 5, but then we never would have had the heart fluttery kiss in, "Entropy."

On the other hand, all the other non-sense that was season sux never would have happened either, which would have been a good thing.

*Sniff* :sob I miss, Tara. :cry

Hmm, yeah we would have missed all those great W/T moments from S6 so how about this, S5 on DVD and then a nice compilation DVD of all the best moments from S6, now that would be worth getting.

S5 DVDs are great!!! My favourites are the commentaries - well, from some of the writers any way. Jane Espensen RULES!!! Her commentaries are always insightful. Joss' commentary on The Body is also a must hear :D

The S5 DVD also have Amber doing a really cute English accent to immitate the Brit fans :D

It's on the feraturette looking at the international success of the show :D The American Tara (short a vowel sound) and the English Tara (long a vowel) are always different.

The DVDs spoil you - and the Buffy sets are always such great picture quality, in widescreen too, and with a reasonably good set of extras...if only ALL TV shows were such good releases.

I don't feel she ruled when she was literally clapping and cheering her fellow writer Mr Greenberg when he was calling a fellow kitten a homophobe for believing killing Tara and turning Willow evil is part of the lesbian cliche, the exact quote is posted in the lesbian cliche faq thread on the kitten.

Just a general reminder, this thread isn't about BtVS anymore, or it's writers, comments about anything other than Willow and Tara or Amber and Aly are off topic.

Re: S5 vs S6

Postby LostWithoutTara » Sun Apr 20, 2003 4:28 am

S5 is definitely worth getting. Obviously there are lots of good episodes but there's plenty of great W/T stuff - Family, all their other little interactions, their first on-screen kiss. Even their angstiest (is that a word?) episode, Tough Love, has a great ending where Willow vows to care for Tara even if she never recovers from the brain suckage. And then there's The Gift when Willow heals Tara.

S6 isn't really worth bothering with. Aside from 'Under Your Spell', some of the Entropy scenes (especially the kiss :love ) and the first few scenes in Seeing Red, there's nothing of much merit. Make a tape or DVD of the best bits and save yourself the cash.

:bigwave Thanks!

The whole arc of Willow & Tara's relationship is great in Season 5. I thought so, anyway... not true for Season 6 (which sucks as a series in general, too). Season 6 has only a few isolated good moments - and they nearly all involve W/T - but I wouldn't buy it.

DVD Ranking

Postby sheila wt » Tue Apr 22, 2003 1:11 am

Since I'm doing almost everything to avoid studying, I found out that the Amazon.com sales ranking of the Buffy DVDs...

1st season - 62

2nd season - 71

3rd season - 65

4th season - 21

I wonder what could possibly make s4 the most sold so far, even before its release... ;)

I have a question actually, about the Season 6 dvds. There are two Easter Eggs on them; one is on the OMWF disc, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to access them at all. The "Behind the Scenes" featurette is pretty good; it's a lengthened version of the stuff we've already seen. But it does feature some cute Amber and Aly stuff, especially being twirled around when she was doing the dance down in the park.

ETA: I found the hidden thingies. The first one, on Disc 2, is a one minute fifty presentation of the signing done at Tower records last September. There's a very quick montage of images but if you slow it down you can see kitten shirts quite clearly plus the "Got Tara" shirt onscreen. Heh. Plus, there's a shot of a group of kittens who were waiting outside. I recognised Rally, Storm and Xita in the group, but I know there were others there too. The shot is only about two or three seconds, and no interviews were included (there are others with people who want to marry Joss Whedon, for crying out loud, sigh) but the kittens were pretty much there in the whole mix.

The other easter egg is a dvd-rom. It is a call sheet for Normal Again and you know, not that exciting at all.

I got my S6 DVDs today too - just going through the extras. Yes, the Behind the Scenes on OMWF was great. Just watched the Academy on TV discussion - that was good. A solid hour of discussion from Joss, Marty, Aly, James, Nick and Michelle.

But Tommo, how *DO* you access those Easter Eggs???

Ruth, just a question, is the version of Bargaining the same as the one that originally aired on US TV or the sliced up version that Australia and the UK got on TV? I read somewhere I while back that they were going to put the US version on the DVD and wondered if that was true or just flannel.

You know, I still don't know how to access the easter eggs on my dvd player. And believe me, I've tried, heh heh.

As for the version of Bargaining, I think it's the one that was aired in the US. Tara's "peppy" line is in there, so I'm guessing it's the same one. :)

I pre-ordered the S4 dvds from play.com and as the official release date is Monday, I was delighted to get it first thing Saturday morning!

BTW, watched Hells Bells last night - the commentary from David Soloman and Rebecca Rand Kirshner is probably the worst I have ever heard!! They just watch it in silence for most of the ep, or Rebecca will say "how did you do that" and Soloman will say "I can't tell you". Hopeless.

Good to see Aly interviewed a few times - she hasn't spoken on the last few dvds.

Re: OMWF

Postby tommo » Sun May 11, 2003 8:04 am

I agree with you there, ukxenafan. I watched that commentary last night and it mostly consisted of Rebecca sniggering over lines she wrote that she liked, and the other guy saying how sweet Willow and Tara looked when they were together. Apart from that...it really didn't inform me much.

The commentary for Bargaining is pretty good though; it's Marti and David Fury and there's quite a lot of behind the scenes comments that are interesting, I guess. But again, long periods of silence where it seems like they're not sure what to say at all. At least Joss never shuts up on his commentary, even if a lot of his remarks are self-congratulatory all the time.

The commentary for Grave is similarly dull, though. Can't say I'm impressed with the ones I've seen so far. I haven't yet watched the others.

The special features aren't bad at all though. The panel discussion that took place last year is actually interesting, mainly because Aly's so cute, heh heh. But Michelle Trachtenberg needs to stop talking sometimes; she really does go on. ;)

Thanks ukxenafan, I ordered mine from play.com too, I didn't know that it could have arrived so early if I had made the order ealier on, oh well, hopefully it should come through early this coming week. Strahnge tho, I didn't know that play.com did that but I guess that it makes sense since they get them before the general release date so they can ship them off.

A call sheet for Normal Again

That's all I could find, anyway.

Re: Season 6

Postby tommo » Mon May 12, 2003 12:21 pm

Just transcribed a few snippets from the OMWF commentary:

Then we come into Tara’s ballad. This was probably the first thing I wrote, this and the beginning of James’. I’m under your spell were probably the first words I wrote. I knew Amber was going to get what I referred to as the breakaway pop hit um…even though ah…nothing obviously broke away. Um, I wanted her to have the ah…the ballad because of her extraordinary voice. And um, it was very hard to write and very fun because it is such an unabashed love song. And shooting it we found this beautiful location, which in LA is not that easy, and uh, although we had to cue the water ourselves because it’s usually dry going down to that pond. But having that bridge and the sun and…you know, we really pumped up the light and everything to make it feel as magical as possible and then pretty much let Amber do the work because she carried it. Although I have to say, Aly who you know is not a singer and, you know, begged me on her knees to have her sing as little as possible probably had the harder job in this number which is to hold the behaviour entirely in reaction shots, and not to get the singing and dancing but just to stand there and look like you’re having a good time which is…actually harder than actually having a good time.

Tara begins dancing with the other two girls

Adam Shankman was my choreographer here with Ann Fletcher as his assistant and they were invaluable and so much fun to work with. The fact that they came in on it at all was a huge deal. It was Sarah actually, who recommended them, um, she knew we would get along um, as well as we did and they really…with again, mostly non-dancers although there are some professional dancers in the background a lot of the time, really brought a lot of life to it.

The scene in the bedroom…

This um, is pornography and um, there’s nothing I can say to ah…change your mind about that fact. Um, it’s probably the dirtiest lyric I’ve ever written um, but um, it’s also very very beautiful. I was a little disappointed that spread beneath my Willow tree destroys the sea imagery I was working with. Not the first guy in the world to work with sea imagery but I thought I had um, some nice lines in it. But then, I pretty much just went to the place um, with the Willow and the spread and what are you gonna say? Um, but leading up to this cut is one of the things in the entire show because um, it ah, it’s such a good way to get out of that musical number and completely destroy that mood.

Despite it being a wee bit risqué, that number was written, you know, as a pop hit in the sense of…or a pop tune in the sense of being somewhat non-specific even in terms of gender, just being about love and although Tara talks about herself somewhat we don’t actually learn anything new…

Tara and Giles in the Magic Box:

Now we come to my favourite piece of all. Lethe’s bramble I took from a line about Lethe’s wharf in um, Hamlet, ah…a place um…of forgetting and um, so I made that little thing up. But I actually had Tara find out what was going on in the dialogue but to have her and Tony do a duet; Amber and Tony, was again something I knew I wanted right away. To reprise Under Your Spell as a bad thing was you know, I thought, powerful and then this, again I knew right away that I wanted to shoot the two of them and have him come in to play this together with her in close and him behind because to me it has a great deal of power, and the two people they love not even hearing a word they say.

And then this, which has the distinction of being the first counterpoint that I had ever written, um, where I basically just had Giles’ song in my head and counted off the beats and tried to figure out what I could do with her and how they would go rhythmically and I mean, I had no idea what I was doing um, but um, but it came out nicely and to listen to these two voices together is one of the greatest treats for me of my career.

And by the end of it you know, we’ve learned that both of them need to leave which over the course of the next couple of episodes they both did.

About Aly’s line in “Walk Through the Fire”

Willow, with possibly my favourite moment in the entire show. And of course Aly, adorable and selling it really hard.

"Dude, you just rescued a puppy!"
