The year is 2050 and the planet is a mess. Global human population has reached an unexpected high of 16 billion. The shortages in basic resources like food and water caused by the population surge are devastating. As a result the UNFA with the support of the governments of 52 nations, including the United States, implements a turn back the clock initiative, mandatory sterilization of 50% of the worlds women. In the US, Federal Reproduction Agencies are set up. They run the fertility lottery and act as clinics that fit pubescent girls with birth control implants. They also remove those implants from the lucky few who later in life are selected to reproduce. All women of age are entered into the lottery. They receive either a B (breed) or an NB (no breed),. Those with a B are allowed one birth, those with an NB are permanently sterilized. Laura Keller works in one of these FRA clinics removing implants. She’s of age and very much wants to have a baby with her husband Ben. Their lives, like everyone in our overcrowded world, are cramped, but they are happy. They live snuggled in a one-room apartment where the bed folds over into the kitchen table. But when Laura receives her lottery results she is an NB and suddenly they are on the loosing end of a world in which some can have and others can’t.
