Aly interview in Hello! magazine

Postby kajo 2000 » Wed Feb 11, 2004 11:10 am

Aly and Luke Perry are interviewed in the February 17th issue (# 803) of Hello! magazine. There are 3 nice photos of them with the article and one more on the front cover (but alas I have no scanner).

Here is a transcript of Aly's section of the interview:

On The Special Chemistry They're Bringing To The West End In When Harry Met Sally

Interview: Ian Woodward

Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan become the latest Hollywood screen actors to take to the West End stage when they open this week in When Harry Met Sally at London's Theatre Royal. But the charismatic stars of Beverly Hills 90210 and Buffy The Vampire Slayer are conscious that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, who played the title roles in the classic 1989 film, are a tough act to follow.

"I loved her playing of Sally - it's fantastic - but I don't want to do an imitation of Meg Ryan," insists 29-year-old Alyson, who made her TV name as Buffy's best friend Willow.

Luke, 37, seems equally undaunted. "The role of Harry is bigger than Billy Crystal, and it's bigger than Luke Perry, and that kind of takes the weight off me," he says.

The pair are very much hot property. As well as Buffy, Alyson has starred in the three hugely successful American Pie films, while Luke has worked non-stop on American TV since spending most of the 1990s playing 90210's rebellious Dylan McKay. His film credits include The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis.

Clearly it is a desire to prove themselves that has tempted them to make the tricky transition from screen to stage. Alyson speaks for them both when she confesses, "I really want to get a couple of new things under my belt, new areas of adventure where the public will say 'Wow! I didn't know she could do that.'"

Hello! met up with the two stars between rehearsals, at the Sheraton Park Tower in London's Knightsbridge.

Was starring in the West End a big ambition for you both?

Alyson: Definately. It's always been a dream, but I never thought it would come true so early in my life. To be doing this play in the West End...it's mind boggling.

Alyson, have you mastered the famous 'fake orgasm' scene yet?

"We've rehearsed it enough! By the time we open I'll have faked more orgasms than with Luke Perry than any girl!"

The two of you seem to get on very well...

A: "Yes - and that's a great relief for both of us. Otherwise it could have made this experience so miserable."

Alyson, what was it like being in one of the world's most popular TV series?

"I was in my early twenties when I started playing Willow and I was 29 when the series wrapped. Buffy gave me a lot. I made some dear friends, I met my husband [Alexis Denisof, who has appeared in Buffy and stars in the spin-off series Angel] and I have a body of work I will always adore."

Was it tears all round on the last day of filming Buffy?

"It was very emotional. All day it was hugs, tears and applause."

Did the sparks fly between you and Alexis straight away?

"We didn't start dating until he'd left to join Angel. He'd just gotten out of a not-so-wonderful relationship and wasn't ready to get involved. So we became friends, but it was the sort of flirtatious friendship where it was inevitable that we'd hook up sometime."

And that happened when you guested on Angel...

"Yeah, I remember looking out of my trailer window and seeing David Boreanaz [Angel] talking to this guy with sunglasses and spiky hair. I thought, 'Oohhh, who's David's hot new friend?' I ran out to meet this cute guy and it was Alexis. I'd never seen him in his regular clothes and without the swept-back nerdy hairdo."

When did he propose?

"We were driving to his family's house for Christmas 2002. We bought some delicious food and wine and had a picnic by a beautiful lake in California's Napa Valley. I was lying on my back, staring at the sky, when Alexis proposed, producing this made-to-measure diamond engagement ring."

You got married in October. Was it a fairytale wedding?

"It was beautiful and took up an entire weekend. We rented a spa near Palm Springs and all our loved ones were there. People say that their wedding was the happiest day of their life, but every day with Alexis is the happiest day of my life."

Do you plan to have children?

"Yeah, we both love kids, but we want to be married for a while first. My own parents split when I was two, so I want everything to be right."

Well from the way they both talk about each other it sounds like they are very right together, so hopefully she will get that yeah one day.

Thanks kajo.

I think her and Alexis would make great parents. But let's just hope they wait a bit till Aly's new show ends after a several year run ;)

Ah come on, no self respecting comedy can do without either trying to hide a pregnant belly or having the entire show revolve around it. :p

Amen to that, Garfield.

Aly and the whole fake orgasm scene just cracks me up... hehe faking. Of course if I were in Luke's shoes I wouldn't let her fake, but that's just me.

Never mind, getting mind out of the gutter.

Willow: Hey Buff. One more thing. Buffy: Yeah? Willow: I’m gay. Buffy: Okay, Will. Xander owes me ten bucks.

Whatever for, the gutter is a nice comfortable place to be and I've spent some of my happiest mental time in the gutter.

Besides, DCP wouldn't be the deliciously naughty haven it is without some good ol' fashioned guttery goodness.:peace

I was really ticked off that on the cover they wrote "Luke Perry and Willow from Buffy". What, did they think no one would know who Alison Hannigan was? Was it just pure lazyness to put Willow and not her full name!

Anyway, I've just had a quick read through but it looks an okay interview. They do look like a nice couple ;)

I can't wait to see it in April. My gf and I hope to go down for our birthdays. I just hope we don't hit the show on a night when it's her night off. Think the theatre would let us know when that would be?

Hmm, Alyson and Gillian Anderson in the theatre on the same weekend, that will be one great birthday weekend!
