Amber at BuffyFest, San Diego, Oct. 11

Postby NickDDP » Tue Oct 07, 2003 8:59 pm

Oh, yeah late notice for sure. These BuffyFest folks have occasionally publicized their little con on my site's board for the past couple months, but I sort of blew it off because their guest lineup was thin.

Today they announced Amber will be there, but it might only be as a booth person promoting Chance, rather than a con guest.

Caveat: it looks like this con is being organized by newbies, and you all know about that sort of crap. That was another reason I didn't pay much attention to them.

Thanks for the info Nick.

From the site...

October 7, 2003 - This just in...Amber Benson will be attending BuffyFest 2003! We are excited to announce that Amber will be at the Chance booth in the Exhibit Hall during the day to sign items purchased at the event. More details to come.

Good for Amber, I hope plenty of Kittens can go to this.

Wow, you are certainly quick to pick up a story!

As you said, Amber will be there at her booth to promote Chance. BuffyFest is also screening Chance, with a Q&A after the film. As of now the Q&A is slated to be just with actor Jeff Ricketts.

This is the first year of BuffyFest, but many volunteers have attended other conventions - ComicCon is also here in SD - so we know of the problems that can happen at shows. To make things easier for everyone BuffyFest isn't a big convention this year. Only 800 regular tickets are being sold.

Only 800 tickets? Brr, sounds oddly familiar. No offense though, the proof will be in the result. It should not be too hard to make it a more palatable experience than two recent con disasters. Just don't treat the attendees like crap and with a guest like Amber people should come away with a good experience. The prices are certainly way more reasonable. Good luck, I hope everyone will have a good time. :)

Really? What other 'fest had 800 tickets? Hate to have an unlucky number there.

The volunteers are almost all ComicCon and other convention vets, as both attendees and volunteers, so we are highly aware of what can go wrong - and of how 'fest goers should be treated.

I really should mention why Amber's attendance wasn't announced until so late. Amber's mom had spoken to Ashley, one of the two women running the show, a number of times regarding showing Chance and the possibility of Amber attending. While Amber liked the sound of the event, and especially the women's charities the event is raising money for. However, she didn't want to commit until she was certain she could come down to San Diego that day.

Another Update

From Chris Golden himself. I'll quote,

Quote:
Amber NOT Attending BuffyFest

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, folks. It seems that the good people of BuffyFest jumped the gun a bit. (Seems to be going on a lot these days.) I just spoke with Diane Benson and she asked me to pass this on to you.

Apparently Diane had mentioned to her contact at BuffyFest that Amber might be attending, but that NO ONE should announce anything until Diane confirmed with Amber.

As it turns out, Amber can not attend. She will not be at BuffyFest at all.

In the rush to bring good news (and sometimes bad news) to the fans, premature announcements of things seem to be becoming more and more common.

There you go folks. Amber will not be attending.

You have that in common with Moonlight Rising, and announcing Amber's presence before she was confirmed would be reminiscent of that recent convention in the UK. Anyway, this has all been very short notice so hopefully nobody bought a ticket in the hopes of seeing Amber. I'm sure this has been a misunderstanding and I hope it will be a successful event.

Good for Chris!! Earlier this morning one of the BuffyFest organizers posted on their board when Amber would be appearing there, followed shortly by another poster who quoted Chris from the Essence of Amber board with Chris's post that Amber wouldn't be attending.

Also, BuffyFest hasn't updated their home page saying Amber will not be attending, but they did at least remove her picture.

Sheesh. The way con organizers are apparently taking Amber for granted (IMO), or just ripping fans off (Jealous Events-again JMHO), I hope Amber doesn't have to start cutting back on her participation in the events she is able to attend.

Yep. They should confirm a guest before they put out information. I personally wouldn't go to this con or any con called BuffyFest (one I'm not a Buffy fan and two their handling of the AB thing leaves me in grave doubt). I'm happy that Amber's appearance was for Chance rather than Buffy. I hope she continues to go to cons promote her projects rather than a TV show that didn't appreciate her.

Huge bummer here. I just stopped in to make sure you guys got word, but of course you are right on top of things. Sigh. Not sure how the wires got crossed on this one, because the event organizers were not announcing this until the last minute just to be sure and avoid this sort of thing.

Hostile19, we manage to keep up-to-date pretty well. Thanks for stopping by to make sure we knew.

Kudos to BuffyFest for updating and letting folks know that Amber will not be appearing.

Hostile19,

Thanks for stopping by. The Kitten has the best information gathering network outside of organizations known only by three letter acronyms.

If you are part of the organizational team then you have actually improved your image by stopping by here and putting up that page.

Anyone can get bad information or make a mistake, but it looks like this con is doing what it can to own up to their error and make corrections.

Better than some cons I can think of.

Yeah, I wasn't going to go to another buffycon first timer thing. First, no buffy cons for me. Second, it seemed expensive. Third, bleh.. so many reasons. I am happy the turn around on this was quick though, hopefully no one bought tickets.

xita, if anyone did buy tickets, I hope they wind up having a good time and letting the rest of us kittens know about the event. At least BuffyFest seems "in the internet loop" better than the previous MR and JE disasters. That is a good thing, IMO.

I just read their announcement about Amber not appearing, it was very courteous. The ability to apologize is something this event does *not* have in common with MR and Jealous Events, and that's a credit to the organizers of this fest.

Amber Benson was a wonderful guest at BuffyFest. She is soooo nice and soooo friendly with her fans! Practically all I heard at the 'Fest was how beautiful and gracious Amber was...of cause a fair amount of that was from me!

I guess you kittens already know this, but it did surprise me that Amber isn't super tall (she's 5' 3 1/2") and she is fairly thin - but not too thin - she weighs maybe 105. (I'm horrible at guessing weight, but I'm right about her height.)

Fun fact: Amber (once again, as I'm sure you kittens know) is a vegetarian, and said "no food with a face". If you live in SoCal you can try Wildwood tofu which she says she has enjoyed lately.

Amber's mom (Dianne) is also really cool. You can see how having her mom working with her gives Amber such comfort in the crazy world of show business.

Fun fact: Dianne said her (Dianne's) favorite Tara ep is Restless, especially when Tara is in the back of the ice cream truck. I mentioned Family, but she said she would have liked to see more about how Tara was able to break free of her oppressive family and go to UC Sunnydale.

We've heard countless stories about how sweet Amber and her mom are, I'm glad many others find this out for themselves all the time ;)

Beautiful pictures. Amber has lost weight. I liked her the way she was, but she looks great.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Thanks very much indeed for the photo link Hells Bells!

Those photos make her look really pale and washed out. I think it's maybe the lighting or flash or something throwing off the color balance. She honestly looked far better than comes off in the photos. You can really tell by the color of her eyes, which are much bluer than you see there.

Hee, that's so cool that she was there after all. Congrats on that oh lucky one. ;)

Pictures can be a bit deceiving, in my case instead of making me look thinner they always add about 50 pounds to my face. :miff Some of the other actors look a bit the worse for wear as well, so the lighting can probably be blamed, but better that than food poisoning. :p

Re: Amber at BuffyFest

I think maybe because Amber has such a fair complexion she doesn't always come off on camera (film or still) as being as stunningly beautiful as she is. At the convention you heard how much prettier she is in person almost as often as you heard how sweet she is. I certainly wouldn't say she is nicer than she is beautiful, but perhaps that's the rarer commodity in Hollywood.

I should say here that absolutely all of the celebs who attended BuffyFest were super cool, not just Amber. (Not that I would or could mislead you kittens though, Amber was the coolest.)
