Okay here it is guys. The last installment before the big showdown. Hope you enjoy this little interlude.

Once Again I have to send mucho hugs and kisses to Amanda(leatherqueen) my beta reader. She's got lightening speed beta-skills.

Chapter 8

She was in the middle of a glorious dream. She was covered in warmth. The kind of warmth that can only be achieved with the closeness of another body. But it wasn't just any body. It was Tara's. She didn't need to see it, she felt it. She knew every curve, every texture, every inch of her body memorized in her mind. She felt sunlight on her face calling her to a new day. But she wouldn't answer, she couldn't. This was all she ever wanted, all she ever needed. Willow would keep her eyes closed forever if she could stay here. Then she felt the warm body covering her start to stir. 'Don't wake up, let me stay here... please, just let me stay here.'

Tara was going through a similar state of denial. She felt the warmth too. And for a moment she thought of staying. She could pretend that this was just another morning. Another morning where she was wrapped in the arms of the world, her world... her Willow. But this wasn't just another day, there was much to be done. But it would be so easy to just stay... stay in this perfect moment a little bit longer. 'You can't, Tara. You need to face this, you and Willow both.' Tara reluctantly opened her eyes and saw the red head. There she was, in all her peaceful glory. She was so close… she could just reach out...

Willow suddenly felt the touch of Tara's fingertips on the surface of her forehead, and shuddered as the touch trailed down the side of her face. The hand was now cupping her cheek and the thumb moved from side to side in a soothing motion. Willow couldn't take it.

"It has to be a dream," Willow whispered to the ears of the blonde head covering her chest. Tara understood. She knew the disbelief Willow was going through because she was going through the same thing.

"What's a dream, Will?" Willow opened her eyes at the sound of the deep, and scratchy voice of Tara. She looked into her eyes. Tara had lifted her head off Willow's chest, but her hand still rested on her cheek. Willow lifted her own hand, placed it over Tara right hand that was on her cheek, and answered her question.

"Tarahand." Tara smiled, the choice of words wasn't lost on her.

"Not a dream, Willow... just a beginning. We really should get up, though. The gang is still at the shop I think. We should go meet them, see what they dug up."

"I know... I was just doing the dreamy, avoidy thing. I guess that means we have to move, huh?"

"Yeah... uh, Willow, did you th-think about how you're gonna face him... without magic?"

"Actually, I did. It may be a bit of a stretch, but I think I got a plan that can work. I wanna tell you before I tell the Scoobs. Gonna need some supporto action..."

"You got it, all you need."

"Thanks." They stared at each other a little bit longer. Just taking all this moment of peace had to offer, basking in the calm before the storm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the magic shop the gang was fighting a serious case of droopy eyelids. They were still huddled around the table. Books were lying open in a haphazard manner, and completing the research mission from hell motif were empty paper cups of coffee in the center of the table forming a pyramid. Buffy was flipping through the pages of a dusty text with glazed eyes that made her look as if she were in a trance. Xander had his head tilted back with his right hand holding a paper cup over his mouth, shaking his hand up and down trying to force out whatever was left of the beverage. It was a wasted effort. Xander succumbed to this fact and decided to stick his nose in the cup hoping to sniff any remaining caffeine fumes. Anya looked over at her boyfriend and smacked him.
"Xander! Focus! And you look like idiot. I won't be Mrs. Idiot. Shake Buffy, she looks like she's possessed."
"Easy An, I'm running on empty here." He turned to Buffy and decided to give his friend a call back to Earth. "Hey, Buff. You're starting to look all 'Children of the Corn' with that gaze there. That book may burst into flames soon. Maybe you should workout, give your system a kick start."
"What? Who? Huh? Oh,… sorry. Just phased out for a minute. I think my eyes are gonna fall out from exhaustion."
"Yeah, we're all in the same boat. Except Spike. He bailed at the first ray of light. Sometimes the fate of bursting into flames from sun exposure has it's benefits."
"Oh, wow! Sunlight. Light of a new day. We've been at this for a while, huh?" Anya snorted at that comment.
"That's putting it mildly. This is pointless. The only way you can beat dark magic is with dark magic. Anything else is like stupid party tricks." Anya made it too easy. Buffy took the bait.
"You mean like pulling rabbits out of a hat?" Buffy smiled and giggled softly. Anya gasped in fear then gave Buffy a murderous look. Her response was filled with venom.
"DEVIL WOMAN!" Xander placed his arms out to his sides to keep the peace.
"Okay ladies. Back to your corners. Now An, I understand your frustration, but we have to keep looking... for Willow." Anya roughly picked up a book, slammed it on the table, and started flipping.
"Fine, but tell 'Beach Blonde Barbie' over there to keep her hippity-hop comments to herself." Xander winced. Barbie comments to Buffy were a big no no. Even the demon baddies out there knew to avoid them if they wanted to keep their insides… well, inside. Buffy jumped up and yelled,
"THAT'S IT! I'm kicking your ass. Let's go!" Anya jumped up, then pulled Xander up and thrust him in from of her like shield. Just as it seemed like all hell was going to break loose, the familiar sound of the store door bell was heard. All three sets of eyes looked over to the entrance to see Willow, Tara and Dawn staring at them. Willow spoke first.
"Ah, the Anya/Buffy showdown. You guys must be at the 8 hour mark." Both Dawn and Tara muffled their laughs with their hands. Tara couldn't help but think, ‘Some things never change.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After the commotion ended they all returned to their respective seats at the table. The girls had brought provisions in the form of coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts. The caffeine jolt and sugary dough combination helped settle the raging frustration boiling in the slayer and the ex-demon. Xander finally broke the steady meaningless chatter going on with a serious insertion.

"Willow, I hate to be the bearer of bad news,… well, I hate to be the bearer of anything, but we've been searching non-stop. There isn't a spell that can defeat him that isn't dark. We found stuff but if you want to use natural magic against a guy like this you need back up. Practically a mini Wiccan army. You and Tara just aren't going to be enough." Willow put the cup of coffee down that she had in her hand. She looked at the table for a moment and then raised her eyes to look at everyone at the table. Finally her eyes rested on Tara. The girl gave her a reassuring smile. Willow returned the smile, nodded, and replied.

"I know. That's why I'm not using magic." Buffy looked around wondering if anyone else had any idea what she was talking about.

"Uh, you gonna give us the footnotes on that creepy comment, or are we left to our own demented imaginations?" Willow shook her head.

"Okay, this is my idea, first we get Rack to come to us..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The group was silent. They didn't know what to make of her plan. Willow was nervous to begin with, but the silence was just multiplying it by ten. Willow had to say something.
"Look guys, I know it's kinda chock full of the risk but-" Anya let out a big sigh and interrupted.
"Again, with the mild." Willow looked confused. She’d obviously missed something but continued anyway.
"I can do this. You have to trust me." Buffy put her hand across the table and covered Willow's.
"Will, it's not about trust. It's about law of physics adherence. This plan don't got it. Your putting a lot on chance here. Actually, you're putting you on chance. I won't lose you." Xander added to that.
"I second that. Not down with losing our Will." Tara spoke up in defense of Willow.
"Look, I know you guys are worried about Willow. I feel it just like you do. But she needs to do this. It's not just about beating Rack." Willow finished for her.
"It's about beating myself. Look, for too long I left myself be seduced by this power. And it turned me into two different people. One was strong and confident, but it disregarded a lot of important things. The other was kinda the flip side. A little scared, a little low on the confidence, but it was me, it was Willow. After being SuperWillow I convinced myself that Real Willow wasn't worth much. But I came back, I can look in the mirror and say, 'I'm okay.' Rack represents everything I want to leave behind. If I beat him using dark magic, then it will always be there. Every time we get a big bad, or end of the world prophecy, then SuperWillow will just step in and take over, and then it will start all over again. I won't do that again. I survived on this hellmouth for a while before becoming witch, I can survive again. I need to beat him as Real Willow. I believe I can do it, but I can't do it alone. I need you to believe in me too, believe in plain old Willow."
The gang was smiling at Willow. This was her, good old Willow. You could tell Willow was scared and nervous, but she was willing to fight this fight anyway. That was 'good old Willow.' How could they not support that. If she believed, so could they. Xander offered the first words of support.
"You got us Willow. 100 percent." Xander smiled. Buffy added her feelings.
"Totally, Will. We'll do this together." Tara put her hand on Willow's shoulder and squeezed it and offered her support.
"Where you go, I go." Willow covered Tara's hand with her own and squeezed it. Then everyone looked at Anya, waiting on her word. Anya got confused wondering why everyone was looking at here. Then it dawned on her.
"Oh, yeah. Me too." Buffy decided to throw in a quick question.
"Okay, I'm just a little unsure about something. If we're not gonna weaken him with magic then how is he gonna be vulnerable?" Willow answered
"Oh, we get him angry so he uses his strongest magical powers." Buffy squinted her eyes and scrunched her brow. Maybe she just heard it wrong.
"Guess my ears are going wonky. I thought you just said we make him use his strongest magic on us." She laughed it off, but then noticed no one else was laughing.
"Getting the feelin' I heard it just fine." Tara jumped in to calm the slayers fears.
"Buffy, it's okay. That's the key. Anya, when is a witch or warlock most vulnerable?" Anya answered.
"When they're casting. Think of a castle. It's all locked up and safe. But it's most vulnerable when the gates are opened to let their troops out." Tara finished for the ex-demon.
"Most heavy warlocks or witches have a kind of invisible shield covering them. But when they cast they can't keep up the shield because otherwise the spell will bounce off it and turn the spell on themselves. So for that moment the spell is coming from them they are completely vulnerable. That's why it can work." That was it. This was their plan, and they were going through with it. Buffy went into slayer mode.
"Okay then. Xander you get the weapons ready. Anya you get together all the stuff Tara needs to cast her spell to bring Rack to us. I'm gonna go wake up Billy Idol, we're gonna need all the muscle we can get. Dawn you stick with the girls. Willow you need anything from us to get your part done?" Willow shook her head from side to side.
"Everything I need is at the house. Just a quick trip to Radio Shack to get the projector and I'll be set."
"Alright. Looks like we're ready to kick some Rack ass. Let's get moving." All the Scoobies started to get their things together. Tara gathered some of the books she needed. Xander gave his fiancé a kiss and started to head out. Dawn stepped by the two girls waiting to follow their lead. Buffy watched this whole process. She realized she left something very important out.
"Willow, everybody, hold on a sec. I just want to say something. I want you to know how proud I am of you, and I know everyone else feels the same way. What you’re doing, it takes a lot of courage. It's the Real Willow doing it, not the magic. You blow me away." Xander smiled and joined in on the praise.
"Here! Here! Welcome back, Will." Willow had tears in her eyes. She walked over to her two friends. The original Scooby trio formed a group hug. They held onto each other as if that moment was the culmination of their whole friendship. Six years of friendship; they had come so far. But here they were, together. That said it all. They had their bumps and bruises and hurdles along the way, but they were here. That's all that mattered. Buffy looked up from the embrace and addressed the remaining figures in the group.
"You guys got something against hugging?" And there they were. All the Scoobies, old and new, together just as they should be. Rack didn't stand a chance. Nothing he had could compete with this. While they were wrapped in the embrace all the gang shared the same thought
'Just breathe. This is only the beginning.'
Okay kittens, next installment is the big showdown. Are you guys just bursting with curiosity? Sorry I'm keeping you in the dark about Willow's plan of attack but it builds the suspense this way. **Tempest ducks from flying tomatoes and various vegetables being harpooned at her**
Leave A Light On
Chapter 9
The gang was assembled at the Summers’ house. Buffy stood in the center of the living room addressing the gang. Xander and Anya were seated next to each other on the couch. Spike was leaning against the doorway to the room. Willow was seated in a chair and Tara was standing behind her. Dawn was sitting anxiously on the end of her seat next to Willow. Buffy was in the middle of a speech about the specifics of their plan.
"Okay, assuming Rack comes for the bait, he's gonna go straight for the gold, a.k.a. Tara and Willow. He wants what they got, and it's our job to make sure he doesn't get anywhere near them. Problem is that he's not gonna come after us physically, he's gonna use a lot of Witch Fu action on us. Best way to keep him occupied is to move around and keep him on his toes." Xander chipped in.
"That's me, Xander Harris, decoy extraordinaire." Anya encouraged him
"Nobody does it better, honey." Xander smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Willow gave her opinion.
"The most important thing is that Rack gets pretty heated up. The more he casts and the stronger spells he uses the more vulnerable he is when he uses his final spell to steal my source. That's the key, and he has to be in the McKinley lab in Fulton Hall. That's where I'll be waiting for him." Spike was a bit apprehensive.
"Well, that's sounds all well and good Red, but here's a thought. What if David Copperfield himself doesn't cast enough." Tara stepped up to defend Willow.
"I'll go after him. He won't pass up a chance to go after me. What ever he tries to use against me will be pretty heavy."
"And who's gonna protect you?"
"I can handle it." Spike huffed at this.
"Yeah, I'm sure-" Tara turned around and faced Spike directly.
"Spike, I Can Handle It!" She stressed each word heavily as she spoke them. Spike saw a fire in the girl’s eyes. At that moment he felt pity for Rack. He was in for a surprise. Buffy treaded lightly before she spoke.
"Okay... everyone needs to cool their jets. Save it for the show down. Tara and Anya, you have to head to the center square at school to cast the spell to bring Rack to us. We'll be waiting in the wings till he gets there. Willow, you have to get to the lab and set up your... stuff. Dawn is gonna go with you. She'll be safe right?"
"Yes, Buffy. I promise."
"No time like the present then, huh? Let's do this. Xander, Anya, Tara - you guys are with me to the center square. Spike, you take Willow and Dawn to McKinley lab and make sure they get there safe. Then come meet us at the square." Xander picked up the bag filled with slayer toys and took Anya's hand. They headed out the door first. Buffy and Spike followed with Dawn trailing behind. That left Tara and Willow in the house. Willow looked Tara in the eyes.
"Guess this is it, huh? Moment of truth type of thing." Willow's words came out shaky. It was obvious that the girl was feeling very nervous. Tara stepped closer to her. She placed her hand under the girl’s chin and lifted the head that was drooping towards the floor.
"Willow, it's okay to be scared." Willow gave a half smile.
"That's good because... uh,… I'm really scared."
"You can do this Willow. You know that, we all know that."
"Yeah, I keep trying to tell myself that, and then that whole fear factor comes in and all feelings of courage run for the border. I don't wanna mess this up Tara, but it's right there. I can see the whole moment in bright flashing colors, and then my time comes and everything just goes black. I don't like black Tara, black is bad, very bad. In terms of things that are good, black is just soooo not on the list, it's like-" Willow was silenced by Tara's fingertips covering her lips. Tara had to smile. This was her Willow. It was like so many times before. Willow was always ready to do good, but she always had that moment of uncertainty right before the big fight went down.
"Willow, we're gonna do this together. You went through the toughest part alone. But this time we go the rest of the way together. I'll be right there with you. I feel something inside Willow. I feel something I haven't felt in a long time. This is just the beginning. Let's get over this last hurdle, okay. Let's get over this, and then get back to us, back to where we belong." She grabbed Willow in her arms, and Willow held on as hard as she could. She could feel it too. That surge of life, of energy that used to pass between them every time they touched. It was back. Their skin tingled, their hearts raced, their breath deepened. They pulled apart slow. Tara's hands slid up along Willow's back, past her neck, and then cupped her face. Her thumbs grazed the skin under them. Willow moved her hands down Tara's back, coming to rest on the blonde's hips. She looked down at her own hands. She could feel it. She could feel Tara's eyes on her, she could feel the heated breath of the other girl on her neck. It was intoxicating. There was no passion, it was beyond passion. It was love taking physical form. The tightening of stomach muscles, the sweat building on the palms of their hands, their breath becoming heavy and shallow. It was so much more than passion. Willow closed her eyes and then slowly opened them to return Tara's gaze. There was so much love in those eyes. Their faces moved in.
"Tara..." Those were the last words spoken. Lips met lips. They melted into one another. All the emotion, all the fear, all the pain, all the joy came together in that one kiss. Willow pulled Tara in tight, and Tara moved her hand to the back of Willow's neck to force their lips even closer. Tara got lost in the softness, a softness that had been missing for a long time. She felt the tip of a tongue graze her bottom lip and she accepted it with enthusiasm. Their mouths were dancing now. Breathing life into one another. But the dance had to come to an end. They both knew it and so they delicately separated their lips. But they rested their foreheads against one another. They still needed close contact after such an explosive experience. Tara spoke first.
"Let's finish this Willow. We have a life to get back to. We've waited long enough." Willow was near tears from the kiss.
"So long, Tara... it's been so long." Tara smiled. She was thinking the same thing. She comforted the shivering red head.
"I know baby, I know." As Tara said this she moved her hands up and down Willow's back in a soothing action. Willow felt her courage swell inside her. This was it. She had a life full of friends, and love. She wasn't about to give that up to some pathetic warlock. She straightened her back and took Tara's hands in her own.
"I'm ready."
"I know." They walked out the door ready to face whatever came their way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

They were in the central square of the campus. Tara and Anya had formed a pentagram. They were speaking in Latin. The spell was more of a homing beacon. Energy would form around them and any mystic or Wiccan in a ten mile radius would feel it. But only someone like Rack would be able to feel the intensity of it. He would recognize it and come running. Buffy, Spike, and Xander were close, but out of sight. Anya was starting to get anxious.

"Maybe it didn't work. I haven't done this in a while." Tara sensed something. The ex-demon's babbling was breaking her concentration.

"Shush... I feel something."

"Good something or bad something?" Then Tara felt it. She was certain.

"He's here."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Willow was in the computer lab with Dawn. The room had stadium seating with desktops along the seats. On the ground floor was an open space. Against the wall was a screen and on the ceiling were projectors pointing toward the ground. She was in the control room at the top of seating. It was closed off from the rest of the room by Plexiglas. She was getting her gear together. Dawn was pacing the floor. She had to say something.
"Do you think they're okay?" Willow could hear the nervousness in Dawn's voice.
"It's gonna be okay, Dawnie. You have to stay up here when the fighting comes around, okay."
"Yes, the little girl knows to stay out of danger."
"No Dawn. I need you up here. When the battle gets in this room, I'm gonna need you to hit the enter button on my laptop. When I give you the signal, you have to do that. It won't work if you don't do that. Can you do that for me?" Willow knew what it was like to have to stay on the sidelines while you're friends risked their lives for you. It was a horrible feeling. At least if she gave Dawn this job she would be away from the fight, but still helping the gang. Dawn's eye's widened at this suggestion.
"Really, you need me? I can do it Willow."
"I know you can Dawnie. I have to go down there. You wait up here for my signal." Dawn nodded then scrunched her head in confusion.
"Uh, Willow?" The redhead turned around to face the teenager.
"Yeah, Dawnie."
"What's the signal?"
"Oh! Right."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Back at the central square the Scoobies felt the night suddenly get cold. Tara stood up from her place on the grass. She turned toward the bushes. She felt him before she saw him.

"Rack." Out from the shadows came the dark warlock.

"Well, well. It's Goldie Locks. Where are the three bears? Is this a new friend... what's the matter... did Strawberry lose your interest?" Tara walked up to him.

"I won't waste my time explaining things that you could never understand. You can't win here Rack." Rack stepped up.

"Is that right, Goldie? I think you're a bit out of your element."

"That's where you'd be wrong." With that Tara raised her hand swiftly with her fingers fanned out. "Incindie!" Flames burst out from Tara's hands. They covered Rack until he waved a hand over himself and they disappeared. At this the rest of the gang thought it a good time to come out of the shadows. Buffy spoke to the stunned Warlock.

"Look who's a little hot under the collar. You okay Rack? You look a little flushed." He was angry now. These little children were beneath him and he didn't have time to play.

"You again, slayer. Good thing I brought some friends too, this time. Why don't you play with them." Out of the shadows came three demons and a vampire. Buffy assessed the situation and then called to Tara.

"Tara, get back!" Tara stepped back from the new aggressors, but her eyes remained focused on Rack. Spike and Xander jumped into the fray. Spike took on the big green horned demon, while Xander went toe to toe with the vampire. Anya stayed close to Xander. Buffy was taking on what was left of the demon pack. The two she was facing were big. Really big. There was kind of a strong resemblance to the deformed guy in the movie 'Goonies'. Actually it looked like they could be related. They were at least seven feet tall, and when compared to Buffy's small stature they looked even bigger. Buffy really wanted to avoid too many direct hits from these guys. Despite slayer strength, a broken rib from one of these guys could be a real pain in the ass. She started to almost dance around them. They were slow and her speed would be an advantage. She gave a full frontal kick to one of the guys stomach areas, but forgot to look out for the second one and felt her body collapse as a fist was rammed into her back. She fell to the ground face first, but quickly turned her body over. The demon was now looking over her and was lifting his huge leg so as to drop it on her body. But Buffy saw it coming and shifted to the side. Then she raised her own leg to give a direct hit to what she assumed was the groin area. The demon yelped from pain and tumbled to the ground.

"There goes his chance for procreation." She got up and wrapped her hands around the neck of the demon. He struggled once he realized the intent of his attacker, but it was too late. With a swift movement the slayer snapped his neck.

Spike was busy with his demon, but his opponent was weakening from the prolonged struggle. The demon made a final charge for the blonde vampire. Spike lifted his axe in the air and as the demon charged at him he twirled like a matador in a bull fight and brought the axe down on the back of the demon as he passed by. Once satisfied with his kill he looked over to where Buffy was and saw her in the midst of killing one of the big suckers. Then he saw the other demon come up behind her.

"Buffy! Behind you!" She turned her head and as she did he threw his axe in the air to the slayer. She caught it in mid-air. As the axe settled in her hands she jumped back from her attacker, and then brought the axe up and over her head in a sweeping action finally coming to rest on the demon’s skull. In the same moment Xander was able to finally put a stake into the vampire he was facing. The gang looked around feeling a sense of accomplishment that was immediately followed by terror. Buffy looked around her and then asked sternly,

"Where's Tara?!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tara was in a stand off with Rack. When the demon pack had come out she saw it as an opportunity to lure Rack to their final destination. Rack was quite the opponent. His power was incredible. All he had to do was lift his hand and lightening streams of energy would come out. That was a sign of true dark power. It meant that you were able to command the energy surrounding you to do your bidding. Tara wasn't trying to weaken him. She needed to force him to keep using his strongest power, so that by the time she led him to the lab he would be most vulnerable. Rack was getting frustrated with this game. This girl wouldn't take the offensive with him. She was able to deflect everything he threw at her. He had never seen such pure power before. Every time he threw his bolts at her a white light would encapsulate her. He needed to break her focus.
"Very impressive, Goldie. Not even your mother could put up a fight like this." Tara heard this and her body stilled. She knew that Rack was trying to bait her. She couldn't fall for it, she had to stay strong.
"She was a screamer though. I heard her body wail as I sucked the life out of her. Do you remember that, Goldie? The pain your mother went through for you." Tara felt her heart start to race and sweat form on her brow. Anger was brewing inside her and with every word Rack uttered, and it was getting harder to keep the feeling from exploding.
"It was pathetic, really. The way she just sacrificed herself to me. Didn't even put up a fight. Maybe she wanted to die, maybe she just wanted to get away from you." And with those last words Tara lost all control. The white light around her disappeared. She raised her hands feeling the anger run through her.
"NOOOOOOOO!" And with that exclamation white bolts of lightening energy came out in steady streams from Tara's hand and were aimed at Rack. Rack was caught off guard. He wasn't expecting the girl to be able to harness such power. By the time these thoughts registered in his brain it was too late. The energy struck him hard and he fell back from the impact. Tara shook her head to try and come back to her senses. She couldn't believe what she just did. She had never felt anything like it before. The surge of energy that ran through her was like fire in her veins. Tara didn't like it. It felt wrong. She couldn't do it again. Rack was regaining her composure and started to stand up. He looked Tara directly in the eyes.
"So I guess someone isn't all peaches-n-cream." Tara felt stunned. She knew she should run but she couldn't. Rack raised his hand to give the dazed girl a taste of his power while she seemed to be stunned. As the energy started to gather in sparks around his hand he felt himself being tackled from behind. This sudden movement brought Tara out of her daze. Spike had taken Rack down before he could cast. Buffy, Anya, and Xander were all behind him. Buffy called to Tara.
"Tara! Get to Willow fast!" Tara nodded. Now she would lead Rack to Willow where her love would take her own stand. Spike tried to punch the warlock, but he was thrown off by some force. Rack stood up and turned around to see his attackers. He laughed.
"Fools." Then he waved a hand up and over them and they were all thrown back against the wall of the nearest building.
"I don't have time for you. It's time for me to collect a debt from an old friend… Strawberry."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tara ran through the halls of Fulton. She came around the corner and came upon the doorway to the computer lab. She walked through and came face to face with Willow.

"Tara, you okay?" She grabbed the girl by the shoulders. She felt something in her skin. Something was flowing through her. Something different.

"He's coming." She looked her in the eyes and fell into her embrace. She was shaking and Willow tried to calm her with soothing strokes.

"What happened, baby?" Tara looked at Willow

"I don't know,… I-I, it was intense." Willow wiped the tears that were rolling down the cheeks of the blonde. She always knew that if Tara came against Rack it would be one hell of a showdown. Two opposing powers, one of the light, and one of the dark. It must have been quite a sight. Willow tried to calm her with words,

"I know, I know Tara." Tara started to regain her composure knowing that the battle wasn't over yet.

"He should be ready for you. I kept him on the ropes for a while. Are you ready?"

"As ready as I can be... he's here." Tara felt it too. He was close. Willow was nervous. She wondered if Tara would still be able to do her last bit.

"Are you okay, I mean, will you still be able to do it?" Tara nodded.

"I still got a little in me. It'll be enough" As the words left Tara's mouth Willow looked over the blonde's shoulder and saw Rack step in.

"I wouldn't be so sure about that, Goldie." Rack moved into the room and Willow stood closer to him, shielding Tara with her body. Willow felt her blood course through her veins. She closed her eyes for a second, and willed her body to calm itself. She opened her eyes and closed them in on Rack.

"It's the end of the line for you."

"Is that so, Strawberry?" At that moment the rest of the gang rushed around the corner making their way to the lab. Buffy screamed before she got to the room.

"Willow! He's coming!" As they made their way to the doorway of the room Rack turned around and put his arm out towards to the entrance. Suddenly a shimmering barrier covered the doorway. As Buffy and the gang got to the door they found themselves blocked from entering. Buffy pulled back her fist to break whatever was in her way but her strength wasn't enough.

"Dammit!" Spike touched the barrier and stopped Buffy before she had another go at it.

"Forget it slayer. They're on their own." Buffy looked at the two witches on the other side of the barrier. She couldn't help them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rack laughed at the persistence of the slayer.
"This time, no interruptions Strawberry. Make this easy on yourself. Just give me what I want." Willow stood her ground and defied the warlock.
"No."
"Then I'll just have to take it. " He raised his hand and a cloud of red energy started to form around his palm. Willow became mesmerized for a second, then she looked back at Tara.
"Now Tara." Tara raised her hand and spoke the word
"OBSCURO!" A white cloud formed above her hand. She grabbed it and looked into Rack’s eyes. Then she heaved the thick mass at the warlock. It hit him directly, covering his whole face, and blinded him. Rack tried to shake it off. He was angry now. He didn't have time for these party tricks. He couldn't see what was going on around him. He heard some bodies shuffling and then the voice of the redhead.
"Dawn! DO IT!" Rack had no idea what going on. He put the palms over his face and spoke
"Dissipate!" The thick mass covering his face fell to the ground. He looked in front of him and the redhead was standing motionless in front of him.
"If you had joined me, we could have shared the power. But now, I think I'll just take it for myself. " Suddenly Rack was glowing. Red bolts of light and energy came off him in sparks. He raised his hands and aimed them at the girl standing in the center of the room.
"Sweet dreams Strawberry." And all the energy that surrounded him went in a stream towards Willow. The energy would suck all the power from her source and send it back to Rack. Then the unimaginable happened for Rack. When the stream reached Willow something happened. Suddenly the image of the redhead fizzled like a TV screen losing it's antenna feed. By the time he realized what was going on it was too late. The energy reflected off the image of the girl and came back directly at him. It was too fast for him to move and suddenly he was hit with all the power he sent out. His body started to convulse and he could feel his source weakening. The spell had been turned on him and was now draining him of all that he was. He felt his power seep out through the pores of his skin until it was finally gone. When this happened the barrier on the doorway broke down and the gang rushed in.
"Willow! Tara!" Xander called to the girls. The girls peeked their heads out from behind the desks. They looked to the floor and saw Rack lying there motionless. They got up and walked over to him. He was still conscious. Willow looked over him and stared into his eyes.
"I told you. It's the end of the road for you, Rack." He looked up at her.
"What did you do?" Willow smiled.
"Oh that. That's what us computer geeks call a digital projection of the physical form." He looked at her not understanding what she was saying. Willow had used a computer program that she had created for the Buffybot. She created a virtual three dimensional image of herself on the screen. By connecting her laptop to the computer lab's top of the line digital equipment she was able to create a life like image of herself that was sent out from the projectors on the ceiling.
"Basically you cast that spell at a mirror image of me, not the real me. It reflected off of it like a mirror since all those little pixel images act like little mirrors." Rack couldn't believe what he was hearing. He was one source away from becoming an immortal and he was beaten by the old smoke and mirrors routine. He lost all his power due to a technologically advanced parlor trick. He looked past the eyes of the red haired girl and saw Goldie staring at him with fire in her eyes. She spoke with a deep voice.
"Buffy, get him up. I want him standing for what I have to say." Buffy got a little nervous. She never heard Tara sound like or look like she did right then. At that moment she was very happy that Tara was on her side. She leaned over the ex-warlock and lifted him by the front of his shirt. Tara stepped up to him. She pulled her hand back with an open palm and Rack feared whatever magic would come from that hand. Tara brought her hand forward with great force and slapped Rack so hard that his head snapped back. Blood trickled from his split lip and his eyes were swimming in fear as he returned her gaze.
"If you ever come near the ones I love again-" She leaned in closer before she continued. "If you ever come near her again… I'll show you everything I am capable of. Trust me, it's unlike anything you could ever imagine." She looked over at Buffy.
"Leave him. He can't hurt anyone now but himself." Buffy nodded and let go of her grip. Rack fell to the ground like a bag of bones. She looked at him and smirked
"Personally, I think she let you off easy." And with that she walked away to meet Dawn as she came down the steps from the control room. Anya nodded her head in agreement and added her two cents.
"Now that is putting it mildly."
Willow looked down at the body of her enemy. It was over. She did it. No magic, just Willow. She could feel tears start to form in her eyes. Then she felt Tara's palm cup her cheek.
"He can't hurt you Willow. We did it." She looked into Tara eyes and felt the tears spill over.
"It's over. It's really over," Willow exclaimed. Tara smiled and looked deep into Willow eyes. She knew what this meant for her love, she knew what it signified. Willow faced her deepest fear, and she did it without turning to magic to make it easy. She faced her fear as herself, and she won. Tara didn't think it was possible to love Willow any more than she already did, but at this moment her heart was proving her wrong. She leaned in slowly, needing contact. She pressed her lips to Willow’s and tasted that sweetness for the second time. It only got better. Willow held on tight, and resisted when she felt that beautiful warmth pull back from her lips.
"It's not over, Willow. It's only the beginning. Our beginning. Let's go home." Willow buried her head in Tara's neck. It was almost surreal. She was back in Tara's arms, her world was back.
They walked through the doorway hand in hand, knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead didn't matter. They had come full circle and were going to set out on the path once again. But this time nothing would separate them, nothing could divide them. They had faced their demons, and they had won. This time around they would walk the path together, side by side… forever.
Down the hall you could hear the girls gloating in their victory.
"So, was I strong like an Amazon?" Willow questioned her lover. Tara smiled and looked at Willow.
"Yup, strong like an Amazon. My little Amazon warrior." Willow giggled.
"Willow Rosenberg: Amazon Warrior. Kinda has a cool ring to it..."
Tara smiled, feeling the most wonderful feeling of warmth fill her heart.
They were home.
Okay Kitties, that’s it. I hope you enjoyed this crazy adventure I took you on. It's been quite a ride for me. So did you like it? Was the big showdown everything you were looking for? Did you like Kick Ass Tara? Please let me know. This was only my third fic and the others were about 3 pages long each so this was quite the project for me. What makes it worth it is to know that people out there got something from it.
fantastic! smoochies not a problem, tempest. very well written and executed but i found the formatting of the dialogue odd. i got confused. for example you wrote:
***********
"So, was I strong like an Amazon?" Willow questioned her lover. Tara smiled and looked at Willow.
"Yup, strong like an Amazon. My little Amazon warrior." Willow giggled.
"Willow Rosenberg: Amazon Warrior. Kinda has a cool ring to it..."
it'd be easier to read if it were:
**********
Glad to see you guys are enjoying it.
Rane: I see what you're saying. I guess it's just hard for me to pick up on it since I have the whole story worked out in my head. Sorry if that made the story frustrating for you. But I'll look out for that in the future. Thanks for the heads up. Oh and I'm sending out good vibes for you and your family.
Excellent! I figured you were going for some variation on the old "smoke and mirrors" routine, but you did an excellent turn with it. Loved Kick-Ass Tara bitch-slapping Rack.
Tempest819,
I'm fairly new to the board...so I went back to the very beginning and read your work. I was absolutely enthralled! You captured the characters of all the scoobies with such precision that It was truly like watching a very well-done episode in my head! It was a very tightly worked plot! Brava! I know you must be incredibly busy with classes...but may I ask if you have any other fics upcoming?
Kudos, and thanks for a truly great read!
