Sorta OT: Anyone else having problems with Hannigan.com?

Postby Under Her Spell » Wed Jan 16, 2002 6:54 pm

I tried to visit the www.hannigan.com postingboard today and got a "403 You are not authorized to view this page" error. I know some fellow Kitties also post at HDC, so I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble?

(Boy, this thread is so going to get closed very quickly!)

Phew... I was wondering if they'd banned me for some reason (I do tend to get into arguments with the guy who runs most of the site!)

This is what the High Priest of HanniganDotCom has said-

quote:
The site has just gone all wonky at the moment, we're working on it now.
Fear not we'll have it back up and running soon.

So I guess I'll just have to be patient.

There's actually a problem at the ISP that hosts the site. So hannigan.com is down until the ISP gets its stuff together.

So sayeth Dead Dog so sayeth the flock.

HDC is indeed "wonky" (yes that's the technical term) with ISP issues. This actually has more to do with horrible customer service than with the server. They say we were overloading the server's allowable bandwidth. We're currently pulling down a bit over 9 gigabytes of traffic for the month and projected to pull over 21 gigs by the end of the month. Problem is we're SUPPOSED to have unlimited bandwidth under the terms and conditions of our account. Now the company is trying to weasel out of that and say that we have to either reduce the ammount of traffic to our site or switch to a dedicated server (which, at the very lowest cost would be anywhere from $180 every three months to thousands of dollars and still wouldn't fix the main issue here which is suppoded to be about bandwidth, not the server itself).

I brought up how this sounds a lot like bait and switch to me, and so hopefully the implied legality of that term will spark some faster movement from these people. Y'see these guys can only be reached via email and are prone to respond only once per day. So we few, we unhappy few, we band of buggered must sit in wait while I deal with the red tape and bs. I grrr, but I press on. Glad at least a few of you guys regrouped here though.

WHEW, I thought you guys hated me or something. When I got that "forbidden" message I was racking my brain trying to figure out what I could have done to peeve off the mods.

Anyway, HP, I don't know if you can access any databases while the site is down, but it might be nice if you sent out a mass e-mail to people just letting them know that the "forbidden" message is nothing personal.

BTW, does anyone know the address for the chat room? Maybe I'll spend some time over there.

if they're having bandwidth problems that often means intermittent accessabilty, as in "all lines are busy, please try your call later."

The current status of HDC is that our host claims we're "overloading the server" and has disabled our account in an attempt to hold our site for ransom until we agree to switch to an insanely expensive dedicated server. This has, by far been the worst experience we've ever had with a web hosting company, and we've had some bad ones in the past. So the site may be down until we switch to a different host or it may come back up by tomorrow. I'll check in with you guys here when I have more news.

Hi Kittens !

Just another HDC refugee checking in to see what's wrong with our board. It's awfully nice of you folks to put up with our distracting HDC weirdness at times like this, btw.

If all us HDC refugees start hanging around here we'll probably overload the kitten server.

There's enough crossover between the two boards, where we don't think of it as HDCers crashing at all. HDC has always been sort of a sister board to us.

And about that host, bastards!

Yep, stinky host people, oh how they doth suck. They stick us on a server with over 250 other websites and then are amazed when the server can't handle it. Oh and of course that's our fault for being popular. I grrr, and digress. We'll most likely be going to a dedicated server (as a last resort). If that happens there will be no joy in Mudville for the might HP will be flat broke. My pockets will be lint-laden and a likely develop a thick coating of dust. I'll reach for a dollar and pull out tumbleweed is what I'm saying. In any event, we'll get it back up. I may have to sell blood, I may have to sell the hair, I may have to go out and turn tricks for people with very low standards but we'll get the site back up. *paints half of face blue* Because they may take our forum but they will... Never. Take. OUR FREEDOM!!!

Oh and Xita- I bet you're really glad you didn't move to the HDC site right about now.

24 hours later, and still no HDC.....

Hope poor HP is OK.....

Oh, and as for "crashing" at The Kitten Board, we have known we are always welcome, but crashing through the Kitten door is more fun ......

( Although the Kitties are a powerful force to deal with, so Bones replaces the door quick-smart )

Maybe we should make some sort of backupboard with one of those free board services, go on and overload that while HDC is offline?

The same thing seems to have happened to www.jamesmarster.com, which also had a lively posting board. Only with them I think it's a mite more permanent.

I was thinking maybe a Yahoo mailing list group. It's free, and it doesn't even have to be e-mail based because you can log onto the group's Yahoo page.
