DO NOT POST - Backup in Progress

Buffy on Cover of new EW!

SMG is gracing the cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly, which I just got in the mail today. The headline reads: "Buffy is Back!" Woo! EW knows what the best show on TV is!

There's a good long article inside, with all of the new cast photos and some really good pics of SMG.

It will take me awhile to write out the article, but I'll have it up in awhile.

Yes! Awesome! And dammit. I get my EW's today usually and I'm in Virginia Tech visiting my sister for the weekend so I won't get it until I come home on Sunday--doh!

Is the cover pic a good one? Cause I didn't really like that first promo they released of her. She's gorgeous, but that just wasn't a good pic of her, IMO.

Eeek, can't wait for Sunday now!

Well, I can’t find a large picture of the cover.

But you can get a thumbnail preview on the Entertainment Weekly site www.ew.com. Look in the left hand corner with the “Try 2 Issues Free” ad.

Well, now that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head.

Postby Kabuki » Fri Aug 31, 2001 11:28 am

Sorry for any misspellings.

quote:
The witching hour is drawing nigh on this August evening in the fields of L.A.'s fabled Griffith Park. A full moon shines brightly, the brisk air is dealy still -- it's absolutely perfect weather for a resurrection. At the foot of a neatly tended grave kneels the winsome sorceress Willow, her cheeks daubed with blood. Flanker her with bruning black candles are her buddies: witchy girlfriend Tara, bitchy demoness Anya, and twitchy normal guy Xander. Willow invokes the dread power of the dark deity Osiris. Her body convulses with black magic. Her anxius pals watch with I-just-peed-my-pants terror. And there's something moving in the bushes..

Out pops Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But there's something slightly off about her. The eyes are cold. The emotions a tad forced. The movements almost mechanical. And just as you begin to wonder if Willow's spell has gone wildly zombie-wrong, demons on motorcycles come roaring in, the gang scatters, and Buffy screams, "Willow, I need service!"

Drat, they fooled us again: This isn't Buffy at all, it's her android counterpart, Buffybot, which in the drama's two-hour season premiere (airing Oct. 2) attempts to substitute for its presently deceased doppelganger. When the Slayer was least seen, she had sacrificed her life to save her teenage sister Dawn from being killed by a universe-annihilating goddes named Glory. So will the real Buffy stand up again? Please. "I hear that I will be on the show in some form this year," says Sarah Michelle Gellare during a break in shooting, a prosthesis of wiry Buffybot entrails visible above her demon-shredded blouse. "But I can't tell you anything. Sorry."

Not to worry. There's still plenty of intriguing Buffy miscellany left to chew over. Like the bitter and extraordinarily public behind-the-scenes battle between its creator, Joss Whedon, and its long-tikme network, The WB. Or the subsequent move to UPN, home to pro wrestling and Star Trek, a place that until now was most likely regarded as a ring in pop-culture hell to Buffy's female devotees. Or the show's latest Emmy snub (despite widespread critical acclaim, Buffy has never garnered any acting nods and has earned just one writing nomination in its history), an affront that has outraged both rabid fans and staffers alike.

Despite those spirit-deadening turns of recent events, resurrection is still the buzzword on the set. The UPN move? "Its put a little firecracker under everyone's ass," says Alyson Hanningan (Willow). The Emmy middle finger? "It's totally invigorated us," says James Marsters, who plays the Billy Idol-lookin' vampire Spike. "There's a little bit of a chip on our shoulders. We feel like we have something to prove."

No one embodies this fighting-back ethos more than the Slayer herself. Take this unsolicited rant against Parents Television Council, a watchdog group that recently ranked Buffy the third worst show on TV, right behind its new UPN stablemate, WWF Smackdown! "We're like the most religious show out there! We're more religious than 7th Heaven!," she rages. "We're Greek mythology-- we answer the big questions! They just make me laugh so hard. I say, "Come debate me. I want to see you bring your arguments to my face. Because you will lose -- so quickly."

Hell hath no fury like Buffy scorned.

This article is hella-long, so I hope noone minds if I just include the cream. Go buy the issue, it's really good. It talks about the UPN move for awhile..

quote:

So what has $2.3 million per episode bought Buffy that it didn't already have? "A great big huge trailer," says Marsters. "Better craft service," says Gellar. "More whores," says Nicholas Brendon, who plays Xander. "Many, many, many more whores."

And I thought this was interesting too:

quote:

The consensus feeling is that last year marked a return to greatness after a slightly miscalculated season 4. Gellar says the show was "really flying" by last Feburary's "The Body," which had Buffy and her sister Dawn dealing with the death of their single mother. "That was probably the most awful experience of my life -- and I mean that in the best way," says Gellar, who herself was raised by a single mother. "It was gut-wrenching for me, and though it cut to the heart of the character and the show, I never want to do it again." Whedon, who wrote and directed the episode, admits he was hoping Emmy would take notice, especially after getting a writing nomination the year before. "It's my own fault for getting my hopes up," says Whedon. "Every now and then, I'll go, "Damn." But if I wanted Emmy nominations, all my characters would be doctors.

This is the only spoilerish bit.

quote:

Still, look for Whedon to swing for the fences again with an episode he's spent the entire summer toiling on: a musical -- scheduled to air in November -- which will crystallize the season's major plotlines. This year's Big Theme, says Whedon, will be "Oh, grow up!" That emncompases Buffy's transition back to the mortal coil, which won't be easy (Gellar's opening number in the musical: "Going through the motions"), and Xander and Anya's walk to the altar. As for future plotlines, they're being kept completely hush-hush, including who the year's bad guy will be. But what's this we hear about Willow being tempted to the dark side? And a possible pruning of the cast? "With Buffy, you just never know," says Amber Benson (Tara). "You're always scared here. But it's always what's best for the show."

So, it's not a whole lot we haven't heard before, but still good stuff for the show! I love seeing it get attention. If I get my scanner up and running and the pictures haven't hit the net yet, I'll try to post them. SMG looks REALLY GOOD in all of them - much better than the promo that was posted before. All of the other pics are from that promo group, and they're small ones. It's pretty much a SMG focus.

Well, I usually get it in the mail a few days before it hits the shelves, depending on where you live.. so it probably won't be available to buy until next week. It's the Fall Preview double-issue, so it's great press for BTVS. Yay!

Those people are so transparent. Sex is bad, bad, bad, isn't it? Oh, and religious shows are the bomb! Touched by an Angel, 7th Heaven, and PAX tv! They could at least be honest and name it the CHRISTIAN Parents Television Council. SMG was on the money.

Ed. Think before you post. Don't use anti-gay slurs on this board, even to insult anti-gay organizations, religious fundamentalists, conservative politicians, etc.

It's a pro-gay board Ed. It's a pro-gay board Ed. Once again, It's. A. Pro. Gay. Board. Ed. As in "nothing anti-gay on the board." Not even aimed at someone else anti-gay. Not at all. Tape it to the top of your monitor if you have to.

You've done this several times now, despite extensive and explicit explanations and warnings. Do it again, even in jest, even meant ironically, you're gone. If you have any questions or comments, mail a mod privately, you're on ridiculously thin ice right now, and arguing in this thread will not be helpful.

I edited your post, BTW.

What I really enjoy is the way Amber is treated just like the rest of the gang. Her pic is up with the other "'Slayer' Players", she's got a little quotage in the article, she's treated as a co-star regardless of the credits issue.

Yeah, I agree with you there.

As for Willow being tempted to the dark side, I continue to think that'll be a "mini-arc" that gets wrapped up by the midpoint of the season, if not sooner. Kind of like Parker was in Season 4 or Riley's departure was last year.

Hey, what's up with my subscription to EW? I haven't gotten an issue in like over a week and a half! I'm assuming my issue will arrive within a day or two. Knowing there is a huge Buffy article will keep me in worse withdrawal than usual for my next magazine.

Just to make sure I'm not being held out on anything...the last issue was the Fall Movie Preview, right? Sometimes too much time passes in between my issues and I get the feeling I'm missing stuff.

Yes, that was the last issue. Sometimes when they send out a double issue, they count it as two issues, and skip a week. Before this one I hadn't gotten an issue in two weeks either. I think it will be the same with this issue too.quote:

I’m seriously fighting the urge to bolt from work and rush to my mailbox. Can I wait four and a half more hours?

It will make a nice matching set with my 1999 EW Buffy edition. I’m so unbelievably glad I saved that one. I had just started watching, but wasn’t yet a fanatic. Thank heavens for my pack rat instincts.
