Will Young has announced that he is gay according to sky news.

The article says the following:

Pop Idol winner Will Young has disclosed he is gay and insisted he has never kept it a secret.

The 23-year-old TV contest winner, whose first record was the fastest selling debut single in history, is said to be comfortable with his sexuality.

In an interview with the News of the World newspaper, the former drama student said: "I feel it's time to tell my fans I'm gay.

"It's totally no big deal, just part of who I am.

"I'm sure this will not come as a surprise to many people, although I've always been discreet and I'm not a campaigner when it comes to my sexuality."

The Pop Idol's first record, the double A-side Anything Is Possible/Evergreen was released on February 25 and sold more than a million copies in a week, goingstraight into the charts at No 1.

I thought it was common knowledge that Will Young was gay. And I'm some-one who had no interest whatsoever in Pop-Idol thingy [I hate the very concept]

The thing is, and it may be just me, but my friends all agree, that nobody in the UK really gives a stuff any more as to who is gay and who is not. I remember when Barrymore came out, the news sank like a stone with hardly a ripple. As I recall, when he was interviewed, Barrymore said that if he had known that it would have caused so little upheaval, he would have come out years ago.

OK perhaps its me, looking from the outside in. I'm sure that there is a lot of homophobia still out there, but my gut reaction is that in the UK at least coming out and being gay is not the stigma it once was.
Shit, I'm Welsh, and I still have to put up with sheep jokes on a daily basis but I'm not stigmatised for it [well not much anyway...Baaaa]

I now stand to be corrected and put in my place by all the UK Kitties out there

Still Waters Run Deep, I have to say I agree, the UK does seem a lot more liberal than it used to be. I have watched the change this country has gone through over the immigration laws (MaClayMagic still doing the happy dance because her American girlfriend got the right to stay as her legal partner)When my partner and I came back to the UK 5 years ago there wasn't much of a law for same sex couples to stay in the country. We watched it go from the couple having to have 15 years together, to 4 and then to 2 years. And anyone who comes out does seem to get less backlash. I was at Merry Hill's shopping mall the day after Barrymore (UK entertainer) came out and he was cheered VERY loudly! Everyone was just pleased to see him. And we had Channel 4 throw a party for Ellen's tv coming out, I was in the USA when she came out there and there wasn't quite the same atmosphere! I haven't really watched the whole Pop Idol thing, but it's cool that a guy who did so well and is instantly recognised can turn round and say he's gay. We are everywhere!!

You're spot on. I was at work selling newspapers all day today and everyone was pretty much shrugging at the news. Most people already guessed and didn't seem bothered. Although one woman I had in insisted that it was all a ploy to sell more records. Yep you heard it here first, being gay magically doubles your record sales.

Hmm...if it was a ploy to sell more records, you would have thought he'd have to come out before releasing the single? I think that Will is such a popular guy anyway that whatever he touches will turn to gold from now on which is cool for him.
The way I see it is he waited to make the announcement that he's gay until after the record was released so that people could make their own opinions on without knowing about his sexuality...which is a bit of a shame that people would be biased but, hey ho, thats the world.

Hmm...I seem to be having an opinion on this now...I dunno where that came from, I've never even watched pop idol!

My girlfriend n I watch the end few weeks of pop idol, mostly cos we liked that zoe girl, n then cos it was just am excuse to snuggle in front of the telly. I well we wanted zoe to win n then when she was nocked out we didnt really care who did, though we pertty much guessed will would.
But any way thats by the by, Im not supprised Will is gay, kinda thought he was, n it'll really hav no effect on what people think of him, i mean the guys got an amazin voice, n after all thats what people bye records for.
I think it would of bin more of an upevil if Gareth (sp) won n anounced he was gay cos he was goin more for the 'teen girl pop idol' thing.
But either way good on the guy he didnt beet about the bush or lie about it.

Tarasfan,I was joking about the selling more records thing. A customer said it to me and I just thought it was really funny. It just reminded me of all the reports the Daily Mail were coming up with last year about the "Gay Mafia". Sorry, I just find such paranoia amusing.
