Florida Law...

Postby TashaR » Tue Mar 12, 2002 6:59 pm

Okay, okay, so I'm mostly a lurker here but I saw this on Rosie today and it made me cry.

There is a male couple in Florida who have been fostering five children who are HIV postive since they were small. now one of the boys is testing negative for HIV so they want to take him away...after TEN YEARS with these men. And they can't do anything about it because florida law won't allow gay couples to adopt.

here is the site: www.lethimstay.com

Like I said, it made me cry...the pictures prove that they are a happy family whether there are two men, two woman, or one of each at the head of the family. Hopefully enough people will speak up until Florida reconsiders that law.

yeah, ya know, this law's the only reason rosie's bother to talk about her personal life, to draw attention to the law. you'd think something like that wouldve been notcied and had a big hoohhah made about it in terms of civil rights activists, wouldnt ya? and that's not that only state with a s***ty law. it's not the only s***ty law out there. rosie mentioned this too on her show, but she wrote an article in the april issue of her magazine, one about why she became a foster parent, and theres another article not written by her but in there, about this little boy bert and his family. and everybody should go to that website, and get the magazine and read the article, and make a whole big stink, not only about the stupid florida law, but about the foster care system in this country, which was not designed to deal with as many kids as we have now. there's plenty wrong and people should go harass their representatives and let them know that these kids cant jst be tossed about and ignored.

Okay, shit like this just makes me angry. Why the hell isn't the child's best interest put first. But oh no, why would we do that when we have a political gesture to make (the authorities that is, not the two men.). I know the USA isn't signed up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, most countries that are don't make it legally binding anyway. But someone in the legislature in Florida should have a quick flick through a copy.

Do you think these people (the Kearney's and the Jeb Bush's etc) manage to sleep at night? Do they go about, just blindly "following the letter of the law", or do they actually do this guff for kicks? I just don't understand how a human being can have a cold, calculating capacity to ignore what must surely be in front of their faces, and carry on regardless. I guess there must simply be enough voters there that will support it - politicians rarely think beyond what's gonna keep 'em in office. Do you think, if the "majority" told them that to retain their positions in the next elections, they had to spend the next 100 days, with their heads stuffed up their own asses, they'd do it? - Oh, wait, they already have.

From EOnline:

"I AM THE GAY PARENT": O'Donnell speaking out about being gay--and being a gay parent--in her much-talked-about interview with Diane Sawyer, airing this week on ABC's Primetime Thursday. "I don't think America knows what a gay parent looks like," she said. O'Donnell says she realized she was gay when she was 18 years old.

So it's airing Thursday night.quote:
