Tara knows Willow's really talking about her.
Tara (sincerely) I'm sure she feels the same way.

Yeah, I got the subtext at that time, but she was speaking to a very real situation with Buffy also....

(EDITED: Well, I'm slow as usual . I might as well leave it here, though)
Certainly the line about missing Buffy was actually about Tara (yay!!), but it probably also retains its surface meaning... Buffy hasn't really been around (just ask Dawn...or, you know, feel the vibes whenever you're in the ROOM with Dawn). I'm not sure, though, whether it would have been more helpful having Buffy away (avoidance of mystical stuff) or whether it would have been more helpful if Buffy could actually have been there for Willow. Seeing as, speaking of subtext, Buffy's conversations with Willow about her problem tended to be "So I should stop hooking up with Spike. Definitely bad. Yeah, I need to stop that. I'm sorry, did you have a problem?" I'm not trying to judge Buffy... God only knows she's had to deal with more than I can imagine... just throwing out thoughts.
Responding to other things I've read in this thread, Spike's lack of birthday gift may or may not be a symptom of his not caring. Could it be he didn't know about birthday presents? His experiences definitely include the realm of 6-packs (plus you can get 6-packs any time of day) but I don't really see him getting invited to many happy kiddie birthday parties (and hey, he has been gadding about in daylight lately, making a spectacle of himself, but I still can't quite see him stopping by the Bath & Body Works before the mall closes to pick something up for "his girl"). This, alas, is where my lack of encyclopedic Buffy knowledge hurts me. Has Spike been involved in Buffy birthday gift-giving before? (I read lots and lots of summaries online, but have only been able to watch sometimes) He gave Drusilla a necklace during the Angelus plotline, but I seem to recall that being Valentine's Day. He commented on the fact that Buffy Bdays are disasters, so it seems like the kind of custom he may have picked up on...I don't know. If I look back at this post and decide I'm an idiot for even being curious about this, I'll take this segment out.
(EDITED TO ADD: Something else just occurred to me, although I don't know what to make of it. Doesn't it seem like if this was last year Spike would have been there when Dawn said "I'm going shopping" and he would have gone with Dawn to get something (which Buffy would have spurned, sure, but that's not the point)? Just thinking.)
My only comment about the Xander thing (although I enjoyed watching X and A very much in this episode, unless, you know, W and T were onscreen, with their captivate-y ways) is that I would like to reaffirm that we're all here because we love Willow (and Tara! But that's not being questioned) and care about her well-being, no matter what our opinions of other characters' actions are. I'm pretty sure I'm not being too presumptious with that.
I really enjoyed this episode! Clem really impressed me for some reason. And Tara... le sigh

I just saw the ep thanks to the God that is Steve. I just fell in love with willow and Tara all over again *sigh* Willow ckecking herself out in the mirror, their little encounter all nervous with the hands and not knowing what to say. There's hope lot's of hope you cut the love in the air with a knife even in the tense moments.
Xander dissapointed me, tsk-tsk urging Willow to use magic was not nice.
I loved Tara taking jabs at Spike and kick ass Tara kicks ass! How hot did she look standing up for Willow, it was even better than when she said "no one messes with my girl"
Emma c did a wonderful acting job. She showed great range in this eppy.
I wonder what's up with Halfrek being the woman that dissed Spike before he got turned by Drusilla? Like someone said it could an inside joke or another plot point down the line.
Above all I'm just happy I got to see so much of Tara. The fact that she's friends with Buffy even if she's not with Willow was a nice turn too

just a question on something other than the W/T hopeful goodness...
did the timing of Xander and Anya dragging out the trunk just as Buffy opened her gift from Dawn seem a bit coarse to anyone or am I just sensitive to the poor teenager?
Buffy had barely seen what it was (other than the security tag) when wham Dawn got lost to Xander and Anya's surprise.

The timing was pretty bad but it's kinda like when you come into a friend's room (I'm in college, so that makes sense) with some really big piece of news and accidentally interrupt the conversation that's going on. You didn't mean to be rude but if it's too late to not say it (as with the trunk which you can't really hide) it wreaks havoc on the previous conversation anyway. I felt really bad for poor Dawnie (I can't figure out why I like that name) when that happened.

That is the same box of chocolates Spike uses to beat the crap out of his Buffy mannequin. It seems like he would have atleast sprung for another box.

Spike likely found out about Buffy's party probably when he was at the bar when Willow probably showed up to buy alchol for the party. Willow likely told Spike about the party and he decided to bring Clem, since he was also at the bar playing cards.
Or Spike thought that if he sould give her a present later, when the scoobies aren't around to become suspecious.
