Florida and Chocolate

Postby Rally » Tue Jun 18, 2002 8:19 pm

I lived in Florida for 5 years, I did not find it very friendly to anything or anyone other than vagrants. A lot of folks talk about how know one in California was born in California. Well know in Florida was born in Florida, they just doing their parole there.

The heck with popular, chocolate, got to go Ghiradelli.

Sheriden's question about gay marriage

Postby Tulipp » Thu Jun 20, 2002 10:13 am

Sheridan, it's true that no US states recognize gay marriage, but at least one state (Vermont) will perform and recognize a "civil union."

I believe the state of Vermont recognizes civil unions as legally binding marriage-like contracts. You can get info about it this website:

Fan Fic

Postby wiccanwiggle » Thu Jun 20, 2002 3:49 pm

Just wonderin' out loud here but has anyone already done or thought of doing a fanfic that doesn't involve Willow and Tara, but rather Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson. Say set behind the scenes of Buffy or something.

Could be a stupid idea but i have just finished my exams and i now have too much time on my hands!!

You might want to read the FAQ. We don't speculate about the actors or their personal lives. It crosses a line. They are people not characters.

True, but Canadian chocolate is awesome. Bernard Callebaut has won several European chocolate competitions and is increasingly found south of the border in the U.S.

Godiva's good but if you trying to defend the quality of American chocolate, I have to let you know that Godiva is from Belgium like all good chocolates. Brussels is chocolate heaven. The quality is amazing and it's cheap. I bought a 1/4 kilogram (1/2 pound) of dark filled chocolates from Leonidas for about $3. The next time I go to Europe I'm flying out of Brussels because I'm going to throw out everything I packed and fill my luggage with Belgian chocolate. Unfortunately, someone else came up with the idea of chocolate tours of Europe before I did. That would have been the perfect job--travel and chocolate at the same time.

Are there any good BtVS books with W/T?

Postby darkmagicwillow » Sat Jun 22, 2002 2:08 pm

I love reading the fan fiction posted here and elsewhere and reading it has helped me understand how to portray the characters I'm so familiar with from television in writing. That led me to wonder if any of the official BtVS books included a large amount of Willow and/or Tara and were worth reading. I looked through a dozen or so at my local B&N but only a few talked about Willow in the blurb and none even mentioned Tara in it. So do any of the kittens know of any of the BtVS books that are worth reading either for fun or as a way to see how to write Willow and Tara?

If you want to read for the sake of how to write WT I'd really stick to the fanfic. (I'm resisting the urge to plug my own favourites who I think characterize WT to perfection.) The Buffy books hardly have any WT in them, the "Unseen" trilogy (A Buffy/Angel cross-over) were the first that had Tara in them, and though the scenes were very sweet in total there's just a few pages with WT in them, same for subsequent Buffy books. Seriously, I think some WT fanfic writers here could outwrite some of the Buffy writers any day, not because the Buffy book writers are not good, but just because they are better.

I have looked and I've noticed that they seem markedly absent, though that may not be as sinister as it seems as most books still seem to be set around S3 or earlier. Perhaps thats a opprotunity for one of us, first one to reach 70,000 words wins! :)

i believe adrienne's site extra flamey has an essay on how to write willow. i've not read it so i cant say whether its, in my opinion, helpful or not.

for instance something i dont agree when people write tara in season four and they describe her as season one willow. i dont seen anything alike between the two of them. so what one person may think is very willow-like doesn't neceserally fit for me.

i dont think there's any essay on how to write tara. that's what we were supposed to try and do with this thread, for both. i started to cumulate all that was being posted into a coherent list but i haven't had the time to do it.

As for chocolates, I am an avowed Lindt fan (although Godiva is tied for First Place with it in the Sinful Delights division). Lindt is dreadfully hard to find in the Midwest so I have to stock up whenever we're in Charlottesville, VA or in NYC.

Willow and Tara in BtVS Books

Postby tommo » Mon Jun 24, 2002 1:51 am

Quote:
That led me to wonder if any of the official BtVS books included a large amount of Willow and/or Tara and were worth reading.

Short answer: no. Heh.

The only official novels with Willow and Tara in them are the following:

The Unseen Trilogy

Tempted Champions

Sweet Sixteen

There are a few more available for release this summer that will also include Tara, and most of the writers are setting their fiction mid Season 5 so I would imagine there's more to come. Certainly in the Unseen Trilogy, Willow and Tara's relationship is known, but still very new.

I've been impressed with the sweetness that the writers appear to employ when talking about our two girls. Of course the standard of the story depends on the standard of the writing, and honestly I'd avoid anything that isn't written by either Chris Golden or Nancy Holder. They're the best novel writers of the Buffy lot.

Hope that helps some. And I can't help feeling like I've forgotten another novel with Tara in it...

The new graphic novel Creatures of Habit does have W/T relationship stuff in it. Unfortunately as it seems to take place around All the Way it's not the best side of it. There is an implied sex scene early on. However, it does delve into Willow becoming more and more obsessed with the black arts and her coming to bed and not noticing Tara crying silently. Plus I think the cover art is one of the better graphical representations of Willow I have seen.

DrG, Tommo, and Autumn, thanks for the book recommendations and for the caveats that I probably won't find much of what I'm looking for in them. I am still interested in seeing "official" portrayals of Tara and Willow in writing though you're probably right that the fan fiction characterizations may be better for what I'm writing, especially since what I'm writing would not be considered canonical by ME though I probably will reach that 70,000 word length that Sheridan mentions.

DrG, I agree that there are some great writers here and I definitely prefer some of them to the television writers, especially since Joss started dividing his time between too many projects. If you do have any recommendations of stories I should read for characterizations, particularly in the Archives which I haven't had time to explore much, I'd appreciate them.

Re: ...

Postby darkmagicwillow » Mon Jun 24, 2002 11:07 am

I did read ExtraFlamey's resources on writing Willow before I started writing and I was looking for something similar for Tara but never found it. I'd love to see something a good set of essays for writing Tara as she's much more difficult for me to write. I'm so much like Willow, particularly when I was as young as she is on the show, that she's easy to write, but while I really like Tara, I'm not as much like her and you're right, she's definitely not season-1 Willow. Of course, that's one of the fun challenges of writing--trying to find the part of me that corresponds to each of the characters so I can write them.

Dark magic eyes

Postby darkmagicwillow » Mon Jun 24, 2002 7:13 pm

When did Willow first have dark magic eyes? I know she had them in "Tough Love" when she took on Glory, but I think she had them before that, perhaps starting in the period when Oz left her. I'm not sure. Also, did she ever have dark magic eyes when casting with Tara? I don't think so, but I'd like to be sure.

Didn't she have them way back when she cast the soul restoration spell in Becoming Part 2? And as for the dark eyes with Tara I thought that happened in Afterlife when she said "Solid" and dropped Tara's hands.
