So happy to see an update. And it seems that Tara and Willow are growing closer to each other. But Xander and Riley? Oh god. No no no. Eek Gods.

After the dressing of the Prince, we had the dressing of the Princess, though not in as much detail. Nevertheless the finery of her clothing was never in question, 70 pounds of accessories!

Willow's or, ahem, Prince William's entrance to the ball was less grand than I expected. Apart from the loud trumpetbearer and the gasping ladies, I thought everyone would have stopped and lined up to kiss her gloves, or something like that.

May be it's because it's Riley, but I didn't trust him the second he latched himself onto Willow. She must be isolated, otherwise
Quote:
realized that he could very well become a wonderful friend

WTF, Willow? He was very oily in his approach! And with the arm touching, surely that's not something you to do your prince?

The end part? Mutual attraction between Riley and Xander? Sheesh! Though I can understand how Riley can be so easy and open, he must have read
Quote:
Friend Xander

as some code that William and Xander are, ahem, friends??

It's all building up to the meeting of the Prince and Princess, please let it be soon.
Quote:
at least that one had to be naked and rub their lips together

Much nakedness and much much rubbing of lips is requested :pray.

I just found this fic and I thought that I'd drop by and let you know that I've enjoyed what I've read. I can totally picture Willow acting the part of Prince William. And poor Tara, knowing that she is to be auctionede off like property. At least we know that she will be well taken care of by Willow. I am really looking forward to seeing their first official interaction with each other. I'll be waiting whenever you have the chance to post the next part.

I realized I had not told you how much I enjoy this story. Your character development is excellent, and I really enjoy the setting. I also really like the detail you put into the story.

In the last update I was all, "Oh, Riley's gay. TOTALLY gay," and then you made him gay! Either you are very subtle with the foreshadowing, or I can always tell when someone is gay. It's probably the former. Great to see an update, and looking foward to more.

Riley and Xander :lmao I'm actually inclined to give Riley the benefit of the doubt, I found him quite refreshing compared to his stuffy fellow court-people. He may be okay.

As if we needed more proof that this society is seriously nuts - not bathing, keeping itself in arrogant ignorance, all that aside, now we learn that they don't like Tara breasts! Well that's it, then. It's sad to see someone as obviously intelligent as Tara kept in the dark on such a basic matter as how her own body works. Hopefully, eventually, she and Willow can sneak into the restricted section of some library or other and find something informative and scandalous to enlighten them :D

Hey there!

I just started to read it! I like it :grin Some interesting things you touched when you were discribing Willow being....well...kinda sexless :) I liked that very much! And the elite being gay.....that was brilliant :lol :lol Actually made me think... :lol :lol

I have a question tho.....I thought that at the time of the ball, Willow was supposed to be 16....and Tara 14.....and then it turns out to be 18 and 16? Or I just confused myself ?.....:confused.... :D

Loved Tara's getting dressed as much as Willows.
Quote:
Her chest, for the most obvious example, was a never-ending topic of abuse. Tara's Madame would not allow such an important event to pass without a comment to those unfashionable growths.
:lmao Current fashion is certainly dead wrong on Tara's bosom. Riley/Xander may just get Willow thinking of alternatives to a loveless marriage. Looking forward to the Willow and Tara meeting. :luv

I've been meaning to leave feedback to you for ages, and now I find myself at a complete loss for words. Basically, I love this story...the time period, the cross-dressing/mistaken identity, the language you use, the vivid description, the humor...*happy sigh*. Can't wait for Will and Tara to meet and the sparks to fly. LOVE IT!!!

I've gotta say that I love this story. I'm a bit of a "history buff" so this is right up my street. I can see the 'Royal Family' doing this type of thing - they really love their male heirs. I'm looking forward to Willow and Tara meeting. I think that their eyes will tell them one thing and their bodies are gonna be telling them another. Bring on the next chapter - please.

Hiya,

I was hoping to get this done the other day, but oh well, here it is.

JustSkipIt: I'm glad that I could get the update out. I felt better about it's length than the previous updates. Yes, Willow and Tara time is soon to come, and don't worry, the Xander and Riley deal is for lightheartedness, and mirroring, there won't be anything that you'll regret reading ( I hope...).

watson: I'll admit than the detail on Willow's attire was much more explained, but I felt that it better suited the duality of Willow's station than Tara with hers. I was surprised to read that you had expected a far more grand entrance on Willow's part, but I conceed that it wouldn't be misled to expect something grand for what I've been building up to... I felt that it was important that there be an initial disturbence for Willow's presence, however, the general idea of the dismissal once announced was to convey that Willow was not accepted. She and everyone in attendence knew full-well that her position in the kingdom was and is purely decorational. Bad connotations usually rode with the delay of showing one's heir, not to mention that they may have felt offended at not being let-in on the secret. Oh, and the kissing of the gloves didn't happen as much as one would think, and certainly not to a prince. More likely, it would be a show of faith to the king himself by a foreigner.
I was also pretty shocked to see that I conveyed Riley as oily. That wasn't my intention in the least. I intended that he be ever-so-slightly flirting with Willow to test the waters, so to speak. The arm-touching was not appropriate, and they both knew it. The reasons behind it should be displayed in further installments, though. You hit the nail on the head with the "friend code" deal. However, it wasn't intentional on Willow's part. More to the unspoken. The way I see it, to Riley, there are few reasons why you would assosiate yourself with the hired help: The first to his mind because of his interest in Willow, would be that she has "befriended" Xander for her carnal pleasures. Yes, they will meet soon, I'm getting impatient too. I'm working on the nakedness, but I can't keep from blushing...

Willow~Rosenberg: Thanks for your patience, and hope I won't try it too much. This situation is definitely interesting.

ringwaldoeuvre: Wonderful, thank you for the compliments. I'm glad that I'm not boring anyone with my sometimes long-winded approaches. It's nice to see gaydar in action, fellow Mary.

Artemis: That is also my opinion of Riley. And I think that the relationship that may or may not progress in their instance could add plenty to the story. Yes, some of the society rules were downright criminal back then, but our Willow will fix that decidedly.

YMKA: Hey thanks for pointing out the age thing... I know that this is Willow's eighteenth, however, I think Tara may be 14. I'm going to have to reexamine that. Wow, missed that by miles.

sam7777: Yes, very much, to the comment on Riley and Xander playing a role in Willow and Tara's thoughts relationship wise. I do, however, remain enigmatic as possible on the subject.

tarawhipped: Thank you so much for the liking.

caz: It's quiet wonderful that you're a history buff. If there is anything that you would like to comment on authenticty wise, go for it! I'm glad that it draws your attention so. The chapter will arrive...

Thanks for all the interesting comments and questions. Talk to you all later!

Wowie! This Fic is really great! Is this really what happened in some cases: the prince actually being a woman and the King impregnating the princess? I'm a self proclaimed history buff but I have never heard of that ever happening.....which means I have to get cracking and read up on it some more.

Another update soon...........please!

Hulloo, I finally got it all layed out. Here it is for you, all disclaimers apply, PG 'cause I'm not violent and they're only kids right now. Also-wic, thoughts are in italics.
Enjoy,

______________

Midway through the night, with its ambling crowds and tactile ambitions, Willow stood listlessly. There had never been a moment when she had been alone. Many of the nobles had spoken with her, or rather, to her throughout the evening. Her friend, as he had seemed to make himself, had disappeared quite completely after his introduction to Xander.

The prince had only been introduced to two ladies of court, being that all others were not engaged by gentlemen seeking counsel with the prince. Even those ladies were, by any manner of propriety, encouraged not to make themselves acquainted with the prince unless specified by family. However, this was a night of last chances and combating allies. Of the two, Lady Precillis had proven the only one of resident mind. She did not speak but to say, "Tis a fine evening, my lord, if I do say so." Did not move but to attend to her escort; Did not impress upon Willow the idea that a personality lay beneath the layers of material and lace, beyond the borders of her etiquette and well-practiced manner.

Entertaining or not, Willow had been enlightened. Every moment spent with these new people opened to her the world of psychology that no book had managed to make so bitingly clear. Her time here had been simultaneously the longest and most engaging she had yet experienced.

Again, with a glance, the prince detected an impermeably dense crowd at the foot of her quarry. Although, from most understandable curiosity, Willow had tried to subtly investigate the young french princess, there was a never-ending group of fawning young ladies surrounding her. Mirroring her own troupe of attending and eager young gentlemen.

The announcement grew near. As it did, the peoples of the crowd grew restless, fanning with vigor, bursting laughter, fitful conversing: They all knew what was about to happen.

Willow knew as much, but strangely, as little as the rest of the spectators did. She had not been informed of the proceedings, had not been given outline of any aspect of the ball but to her own charade. On so seeing a vaguely familiar man in a trumpeter's suit, Willow stood ready to receive the verdict on her future, prepared only as well as the strangers at her elbows.

The trumpeter ascended the stairs slowly, savoring every moment of his short-lived importance. There was no need for attention when the instrument within his hands bellowed its ornament announce.

All eyes flew to his cry, gone were the smirks of financially stable noblemen. Gone, the self-assured king and princess of every attending kingdom, replaced with somber and pale-quiet troupe. A silence became all.

Willow swallowed - hard. For every prediction, however certain, there was always outside chances for miscalculation. Who would be her queen? The prince found herself leveling her gaze with every one of the most plausible candidates. All had the look of dogs awaiting scraps, with faux-confident indifference; All with attention affixed to the messenger's side, where the king himself stood proudly, an undeniable smile relaxing on his face.

Slowly making it through the throngs of possible wives Willow's eyes fell, at last, to the Lady Tara. She could not help but start aback at what her eyes found there: Princess Tara's own eyes laying calmly on her spectator. Her father's speech commenced, but only vaguely was it registered by the born princess of surrounding Northern England. Would the girl staring at her now be her bride? Was this the collected, the elegant and, for the first time Willow realized, beautiful mate for her leadership? There she stood with the serenity of a flower amidst the tension of a lifetime's telling, seeming to emit an impossibly honest indifference to the situation.

Guilt clenched Willow in her heart. What was she forcing upon a random person of her father's choice? The life of an estranged marriage, with occasional and dutiful copulation, orderly and impersonal celebrations, meaningless charades and by far the most deceived of all about Willow's own secret? Even with the knowledge that this would happen with or without her, she despised being a part of it. Especially as she stood in that room, looking at the brave figure of a fourteen-year-old girl reduced to selling-goods.

Tara heeded her surroundings with little attention spared. The prince was looking at her, but why? She had noticed that his had been the only face that she had not seen on this night. When it became open to viewing at the announcements distraction, Tara had followed her curiosity. She was the most likely, and ironically the only princess that could be left having a reason not, to be chosen. She was not the prettiest, nor the most outstanding, and yet the prince's gaze remained. What would he be like? Tara briefly closed her eyes to solidify her thoughts. Do not, by all the gods, be of the same disposition as my father.

There was no cheer when the words were finally executed. No rousing of applause, no joy. These were not the tidings of happy event.

Several of the guests, with outward disgust, made certain to announce their emotion. Many parted, saying their adieus with a palpable disappointment. Willow knew that she must leave before the bulk of her attendance. With finality, and decisive relief, the prince exited the ball. That ordeal had been worlds simpler to accomplish than her entry. It was over.

I'm exhausted. Willow thought. This night's rest will surely come swiftly and on long-journeyed wings. Gowning for sleep, Willow crawled into her bed and shut her eyes. Heaving a deciding sigh, she found herself surprised. She could not sleep.

Nigh but moments from Willow's own chambers, the Lady Tara sat, dangling her feet absently from the edge of her bed. She had left sooner than any of the attending guests. She did not know if they intended to stay the night over, or if their emotion was too strong to stay one moment longer. It little mattered. Now was the time for rest. She would need it for the journey that lay just behind tomorrow's sun.

***

The ceremony took a greater part of the day. Held in Latin and with guest from every kingdom imaginable, the occurrence was as alien to the bride and groom as was the limit. Both were versed in Latin and foreign affairs, but the combination of those factors and the awareness of their positions took precedence over their assumed battle-ready training.

Willow, for one, was breathing steadily, but with a pulse a mediaeval doctor would have pronounced “the last moments of life”. This was the biggest part of herself that she could give to her father, to her kingdom and the people’s in it. For them, all of this was bearable. That may help me keep to my feet, this day.

Tara’s own state was no better. What was supposed to happen, would do so regardless of the inhibitions of those involved. As Tara looked to her future husband, standing beside her with the stern appearance of discipline, she knew that what she had expected from this marriage was coming to pass. A reality of anticipated disquiet.

At no point during the ceremony did either, Prince or Princess, feel the exact moment of union. Blessings, the Lord’s Will, and expectations spouted from the droning priest’s moistened lips. With no revel or even an outward sign of interest, the plump man of the cloth joined the two kingdoms, two lands, and two numb teenagers.

When all words were intoned, a chorus of tenor voices broke into staunch song. It’s sound permeated every corner of the church. An overcompensation was made for lack of emotion in the area of volume. It was inescapable.

Willow flinched. She was certain that every person in attendance had heard her more than audible gulp. This was the part where she was required to give the blushing princess her kiss, to seal all.

In the house of God, and before the eyes of every guest, kings and queens, and priests alike, Willow bent and kissed her queen.

Expecting to take on the action as a sacrifice for her station, Willow was more than a little surprised at how much she, well, enjoyed the simple affection.

Revulsion. Discomfort, at the very least, and a supreme desire to part within the soonest amount of time. For Tara, the kiss itself had lasted no longer than a moment, but she had not expected the golden lighting, the gentle and shy touch, or the goose-fleshing sensation that engulfed her for the unanticipated moment.

At the instant of parting, the chorus broke forth anew, with added fervor and pitch in celebration of this, the most blasphemous of occasions.

Rushed in opposing directions, down the isle and back to separate rooms for changing, the two were disrobed. Willow was left to her specific dressing intimacies.

Tara’s maid now kneeled at her side. The years spent together had softened Tara and Janette to one another. They spoke amiably, though not with the companionship that once held Tara to Marie. Busy with the preparations of Tara’s garb, the Madame was well distracted from the look that manned Tara’s features. With a glance, however, it was not too difficult for Janette to see terror in her young charge.

When the Madame stepped from hearing distance, Janette made a move to secret a bit of advice to Tara, feeling slightly sorry for her. Tara caught the gesture and bent to take heed. “Princess,” she began, insisting in the title from the moment of her institution. “I have heard news of an unusual manner in regards to your husband.”

My husband. Tara blushed feverishly. I’m married.

Janette’s voice disrupted Tara’s discomfort. “In descriptions of his manner, my lady, he is without fault to be sure. However, I have been informed of disquieting activities that he is known to partake in.”

Tara waited. Janette did not act as though she intended to finish her suggestions. Being sure to locate her worrisome mistress, Tara bent to Janette once more. “Do tell me, Janette, what strange moments will I be dreading?”

The girl looked up, faux-shocked, “You haven’t heard?” Yes, she felt a certain amount of pity for the princess, but she was after all one of the privileged. This toying could do nothing more than to exercise what little control she had. Finally, she continued, “He is known to crave solitude, to refuse companies and to read with a vigor that should be reserved for stag-hunting and gentlemen’s lounging. I need not tell you of his most obvious lack of experience in the ways of men. It is even rumored,” she lowered her tone further, conspiracy dripping from her scandalously smirked cheeks, “that he has never known a woman.”

Tara’s blush furthered. Her madame had found her way back, and was speaking of a carriage arrangement that Tara knew nothing of. Mme Flockton glanced only passing at the young girl’s crimson. This was going to be trying night for her, after all, a blush was hardly unexpected.

***

Willow was waiting. She hadn’t been informed on what exactly, but she had a good idea. After redressing, and being made to look well-polished, she had been led to a smaller room that adjoined the great dining hall.

The wedding had taken place in the afternoon of this day. Willow remembered with an odd maturity the sun’s rays as they streamed in through the stained and globular glass of the church. With the proceedings she remembered little, but for a reason that eluded her, the windows stayed in her mind. That, and the look on the young princess’s face just after their joining kiss.

Princess Tara, she knew, had to have been scared. As she drew back from the kiss, however, her face looked nothing like the image of fear. Instead, a look of complete interest and surprise lay on her features. Even a slight wrinkle was visible at the mid-brow.

Perhaps, she had kissed many others and was more than a little shocked at Willow’s own lack of experience, revealed in the action. Unconsciously, she had begun to wring her hands. Of course, she was an attractive heir to a very powerful throne. They would not want her to go to her husband unprepared. And yet, unspoiled. Games of politics made Willow frustrated. Couldn’t everyone just say what was true and right? If it were truly right wouldn’t it be impossible to distract from success?

Her most juxtaposed subjects by far were her religion and politics classes. Now, to be honest with herself, she knew that her education in any of her subjects was not complete. Not only was she female, and therefore inferior in any intellectual assignment, but she would now be the leader of a kingdom some day. Her father, or an otherwise appointed male would always rule while she held the title of Prince and King. To educate a puppet only took actions and memorization.

In religion, she had learned about god and obedience; about ordination, self-sacrifice (though not in the case of royals), and rules. She learned that hers was a family ordained to rule the people of her country with justice and wisdom, but ordained by a god from whom no one escaped atonement.

Politics crafted a distinctly different picture with god and country slightly left behind in the glory of King and Wealth. It was not acceptable for a King to project an image of anything other than godly and selfless. Yet, she herself had been chastised in certain circles, and felt an amount of shame, for her chaste stature. The love of others was a key element to the religion taught to her, but was mentioned not more than a few times. Love, even as people starved and her fellow royals pushed more and continuously more peasants from their homes.

The more she learned of the two subjects, there was more to be contradicted. When she asked after what was to be done in a situation where there was no option without a contradiction of one for the other, she would be told that only god was the judge of such things. Also, that what must be done for the sake of the people was always the priority. That without the royals, there would be no intelligence to commandeer the country with any influence of god, and so the interested of the nobles simply had to be taken into account. She would then be told that ruling a country was a difficult task, with condescending smiles and tones.

At any rate, Willow was fairly certain that she was being set up to enter the great dining hall in all of her newly-wed glory to a full table of guests interested in her eventful day only as it related to themselves. She didn’t expect the Princess to be walking down the hall towards her in a simple and beautiful dress. Head lowered, she walked as though she had been strictly ordered and specifically warned. Willow noticed unmistakably the girls presence was the most unassuming that she had even experienced. When she stopped in front of Willow, the Prince froze.

This wasn’t supposed to happen! Willow frantically fought against her fear. No one else had doubts about her masculinity. It seems different in the context of the person who believes she will be bedding you latter this night. She let the silence drift longer, hoping the young princess would be the first to address.

Tara did not look up as she approached the Prince, nor after she had stopped and waited for his greeting. When it didn’t come, she thought of his distaste for company, especially that of women. Taking a breath, Tara decided to be the first to speak. “Your Highness,” a perfect curtsey, “I was sent to enter the hall with you, as your Princess and wife.”

Willow remained speechless. My wife. The sound was a confusing pleasure. I am her husband. More confusion. Deciding not to prod the psyche of her devilishly sneaky identity, Willow began her own address. Bowing regally, She thinks me a laughing matter. She must see right through me. “It would be my honor to escort you as your Prince and husband.” Crooking her left arm, Willow looked to her companion. Her head remained bowed. Will I ever get to look at her visage for longer than a moment?

He is MY husband? MY Prince? For the first time in her life, a glimmer of freedom touched her mind, only run back to the shadows.

Hiya, sorry it's been suuuchhh a long time since my last spurt. I had been adding paragraphs every so often when I got the chance to, so if it sounded a bit chopy, my most sincere apologies are offered. Do give me feedback if you will, I'm trying for more chapters now since I get more encouragement from the nest. (My girlfriends hooked on the story, and keeps reminding me to update! :-D ) So, yay!

Also, I'm noting that the ages of the two kids are a bit mused. I'm going to try and remedy that here and now ( I may go back and change the originals).
Tara, at the wedding, is fourteen.
Willow, at the wedding, is sixteen.

Thanks for all of your comments so far, you've helped me a lot.

All ya'll have a good day, and hope to update soon!

YAY!!!!

You're back! You're back!!

I am SO pleased to see this story alive and well again!!

Your storyline absolutely fascinates me, and your attention to detail is simply amazing.

I am thoroughly engaged!

What will happen now that they are married? We, as readers, find it safe to assume that they will eventually fall in love (this being the KB and all)... but what further obstacles will they face?

And for "Prince Will's" secret... who better to keep it, really, than a loving and trusted wife?

EEEEeee... this is so GOOD!

Can't wait for more!!

Cheers

An update! Schweeeet ass! I read this story so long ago, i had almost forgotten about it (*hint-hint* about updating more regularly). Imagine my surprise AND joy when i saw it had FINALLY been updated!

I love the premise you have going, and the thought of our pixie-ish little Willow in drag is just too damn cute. Not to mention Xander and Mr. Cornfed - *snort*

A world of YAY to you for continuing with a very unique and entertaining story- keep it up and i'll be watching you. :applause

No, not choppy at all, a lovely update.

The "necessary evil" feel to it all prevails. I'm interested to note how Will and Tara acted in the prescribed manner, yet have so disparaging thoughts.

The tiny kiss ... and the unexpected pleasure it brought ... wow. Now I really want to know how, in the midst of all this decorum, they can escape with some time by themselves.

'A look of interest' - I love that, describing Tara as she's just kisses 'Will'. So much around both of them is false, but there, there's the glimmer of something starting that could be real, not just for form's sake, for tradition.

I'm really enjoying the complexity of emotions you've got going on - so much of this story is unspoken, Willow and Tara's thoughts about their surroundings and their circumstances. It's rich, and rewarding to read :bow

They're married!!! Yay!! Of course this is where the complications will really arise but still yay. I like how you go thru what's on their minds. They certainly are attracted to one another though the situation they are in does not call for that at all ironically enough. Great Update!!!

Wow. You write such rich, detailed updates that I feel a little intimidated about leaving feedback. Two things really struck me in this one. First, Willow's realization of how stultifying her new life is, especially compared to the realtive carefree existence of her youth. She is completely on display, and considering her disguise, can expect to never really be able to relax, except for the occasional moment alone.

The other thing (which is along the same lines) is how you show her and Tara as basically spectators in this very important event. They're really pawns of their fathers, and symbols to the people, yet in the middle of it they have such a sweet moment for themselves. I'm sure they'll have many more over the course of the story, but right now I'm still feeling icky about the thought of Willow's father taking care of the "husbandly duties." *shudder* Even though I know it won't happen (it won't, right? please dear god NO!), the image alone is just...blech.

Can't wait for the next installment!
-Cam

One thing I find truly interesting about your story is the way you portray the women's powerlessness. I mean we know that peasants/commoners have no power. But in this case, we see how these women have no power although they are certainly far from being commoners. It seems from some things I've read that common women have far greater freedom and autonomy than would a woman of priviledge. Have you read Fingersmith? It's quite a good book and I think touches on the topic of what a lady can possibly do if she loses what makes her a lady but is trained for nothing. Another for that topic: Sense & Sensibility. Quite a trap.

In this case, of course, the women are trapped by their royalty, both of them. It's not like Willow has any freedom due to her being the "Prince." She's as powerless as Tara.

This line:
Quote:
He is MY husband? MY Prince? For the first time in her life, a glimmer of freedom touched her mind, only run back to the shadows.
Makes me wonder what Tara sees that would give her an inkling of freedom. I know you have trouble writing and posting, but I'm looking forward to the next nonetheless.

Once again, a great chapter. The tension is palpable, and anxiety over wanting W/T to be together and hoping they can survive the social structure that seems aimed against them is especially well-executed. Your sentences are wonderful and descriptive and really paint an rich picture of the girls' powerlessness. Well done, looking forward to more.

Pips to all, I'm here at the library, having some time between writing class and math, to bring you replies to your feedback.
First of all, thank you so much for you comments! It really helps me to keep my head together about what I want for this story, what YOU want, and how I'm going to grow the two together. Thanks.
Second, I would include a post today as well, but I didn't bring in my disk... But it is written, though not as long as I'd like, so there will be updateness soon!

Okay, here goes:

DarkWiccan: Assumptions. Will they fall in love? And what does KB mean? I don't mean to be ignorant... Well, I as the writer, would like to assume that they fall in love, as well, but I just don't know. Ha! Yeah, they'll fall in love and there will be wooing and spice, I think I'd lose interest if there was no promise of love. Oh, and obstacles, lots and lots of obstacles... I have so much trouble with the word "lots" in this story. I would use it, but it didn't come into popular term until the late 19th century, but one can't forget that the time period that the story is set in is immeasurably closer to the origin of the phrase than our present day. Well, I'll keep mulling over it. Thanks for your compliments, I can't tell you how all of the comments I receive on this board surprise me. I really don't think I can write all that well... I just wanted to have this story told, so I thought, "Hey, I'll do it!" yeah... So, thanks.

UnderTheirSpell: Sorry about the lapse in updates, I realise I could be more timely about them... Yeah, Willow in a nice, tight, pair of jodpurs would any Tara in my mind flush with more than welcome thoughts on the view. Don't know where I'm going with the Xander/Riley thing... we'll see. I should have an update soon!

watson: Thanks for the reassurance, I can't ever be certain. I write it, and read it, and proof-read it, and re-read it, and I just don't know because I wrote it in the first place, wouldn't I have written it unchoppy the first time? Yeah, so I couldn't tell. Necessary evils are trivial, are they not? Uhuh, the kiss. Much will come of this...

Artemis: It is interesting to look at the way that they struggle individually with their own thoughts. Whether or not they're allowed to feel a certain way, freedom of the mind, and trying to figure out which part of themselves truly feels this way and which part is simply acting of necessity, or training... interesting.

sam7777: Yeah, the getting married is a large hurdle, even if it only took a few paragraphs. I've been really stuck on the whole attraction thing... I may go into detail at a point where I have more time... but, yeah, thanks.

tarawhipped: Please don't feel intimidated! My dad and mom are both english teachers and I used to hide my essays and grades from them because I thought it wouldn't be good enough. Turns out I suspected correctly, but that doesn't really service my point, does it? Hmm, I don't talk like I write, so it's easy to suspect that I don't always read like I write, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I love to hear critical feedback, no matter how it's written. The youth/adult contrast is startling. And, yes, I love the powerless dynamic. Ew, the dad thing I'm going to have to figure out how to take care of. If he sleeps with Tara, I'LL stop reading this fic!

JustSkipIt: Yes, I've read both books, and I agree, the lower classes practiced far more freedom than the royals. The freedom that I was trying to express, (although I realise I wasn't too clear on it) was that Willow was establishing herself as being owned by Tara, not the other way around as so many others had. William is YOUR husband, not you are MY wife. The ownership isn't there on Tara's part, and therefore releases her from a tyranny that has been predisposed of her for her entire life. Hope that helps.

ringwaloeuvre: Thank you for your kind words, also-Mary. Yay for tension and all of the relief it ends with.

Thanks for your comments, the gratuity is probably getting old... I'm updating soon! promise

Alright, so here's the update, s'not very long, but I have loads of classes. Enough with the 'scuses. Enjoy!

The meal was progressing with a slowness that Willow attributed to her anxieties. She, too, was being led entirely uncertain as to the specifics of her requirements. She had been told countless times that contact between herself and the princess was to be extremely limited to necessary formal affairs, and not without first instruction. And yet, she was seated not a dozen chairs from her bride, as though they spent much of their time in each other’s presence.

It was becoming increasingly difficult to predict her father’s actions, and even his intentions. Would he even go as far as to be with her wife this very night?

A thought struck her with particular interest: There was jealousy and a certain cord of protection in her most recent of thoughts. It was more than obvious to her now that she would trade much to see that her father did not bed the princess. There was, of course, no real alternative as long as the king saw favor in it. And who, in his position, would find the Princess Tara anything other than favorable?

“Beautiful...” Willow muttered without her knowledge.

“I’m sorry, my lord, what was that?” A gentleman near her elbow asked with practiced interest.

Willow started and looked to the man, confused. “Oh, what?” she said flatly.

The man cleared his throat at the opportunity to speak at length. “You, only moments ago, said ‘beautiful’ if I’m not mistaken.”

Realizing her slip, Willow summed up, “Oh... yes, quite, Sir Hector, the sustenance, if I may be permitted to term it with such lowly verbage, is quite beautiful. Do you not think so?”

Though a bit thrown, Sir Hector accepted the compliment, and turned back to his plate and other interests.

“My food is beautiful?” Willow thought ruefully. “No small wonder the castle is afloat with rumors of my sanity.” Sighing, and quite full, Willow lifted her arm slightly in beckon for another goblet of wine. “Who needs their wits about them when all in their company lack them on principal?”

The night was passing with an unreachable swiftness. It left Tara dazed. Nigh but hours ago she had been wed, and now sat among strangers that she had known at a greater length than her own husband. She dreaded what was to come, and time flew past her tauntingly.

The dancing had commenced. Tara enjoyed dancing in only the most minimal of capacities. So strict and rigid that drawing pleasure from it would have made her a block of oak.

According to the rules of society, and her place in it, Willow knew she had a requirement to dance, if not for a while. “Fine.” she thought, “Who might I ask for a dance?” The wine was having some effects, though vague, and Willow could feel herself becoming increasingly at ease. With a look about the table, Willow realized that she didn’t know the proper dancing order for her own wedding celebration. Hat it been someone else’s, or perhaps a different occasion, there would be no confusion. But herself as the groom? She was tensed now, trying with depressing diligence to remember, or to think of, the appropriate course of action. She knew that for a prince to dance with someone other than his wife or Queen-mother without introduction would be pronouncing said lady his personal consort. Even slightly inebriated, Willow knew enough not to want that. She felt dumb, as though her mind were being slowed by muck. To her, there could only be one solution, and without her usual team of inhibitions, Willow stood surprisingly steady and began to walk.

She had heard that two things distracted beasts of limited intelligence (not limited to non-humans). The first was the melodious tremble of a stringed instrument. The other were lustrous items that drew the eye. And Willow found herself drawn. Half of her remained the stoic-trained, strong prince. While the other part of her, the part that smelled of wine, threw careless glances and openly admired the princess as she approached. Prince William commanded, “We dance with our Princess.” and wine-scented-Willow insisted, “Pretty girl.” Fortunately, they were one in the same.

Tara noticed the looks of pure surprise forming on the faces around her. They all seemed to be looking behind her. Turning, Tara looked to find her husband-Prince standing beside her. He smiled slightly, unsure, and he bent to take her hand. Tara gave it willingly, but she couldn’t be sure of the intentions. With a rumbling voice that at once appealed and sounded wrong, the prince said quietly, “This dance, my bride?”

All within hearing distance gasped. Murmurs spread as the word passed, and Princess rose to meet Prince.

“Of course, my lord.” Tara spoke, trying not to falter and refusing to meet Prince William’s eye. “Surely, he must be mistaken in his intent. He cannot mean-”

The man heading the small orchestra spotted the pair in time to change the mood of music to a delicate waltz appropriate for the occasion. The transition was well-played, and Willow fell into step with ease of so numerous a lesson. She found that dancing with the princess was like dancing with fragrant, sweet-tasting air, and she could have easily lost herself in the drowsy confidence lent her by the drink and present company.

Tara tried desperately not to be stiff. The implications of this dance were something no one had expected, leastwise, herself. Had the Prince gone mad? Or was he, perhaps, a foolish boy vying for attention? If so, he was doing so with great success. Something about his features would not attest to foolishness, though, even if she could smell the wine on his breath.

He held her with such gentle perfection, she thought he must have practiced dancing from the moment of his birth. This was not the image of a hard king’s heir. Or at least, none that she had imagined. Her limbs began to loosen despite her discomfort. Nearly all, now, stared at the sight of a young prince, dancing with his princess, and communicating to all of them that she alone was worthy of his bed, and his favor. Tara was pink with their attention.

As the dance came to it’s natural end, Willow escorted Tara back to her seat. To her surprise, as she approached, all at the table rose ceremoniously. Most still held the look of utmost surprise, but few had already begun to scowl and move in restlessness.

Willow suddenly recalled that she was only to dance with the Princess once. That one dance was also to be the closing dance for the evening. She had ruined the night for all in attendance. With an improperly executed swallow, Willow coughed slightly and proceeded to bow her exit as best she could with Princess Tara’s arm draped in her own. It was warm there, she thought absently.

“And now what?” Willow scrambled for a next move. Now outside of the hall, no one paused to check their volume, and many words were spoken of the recent proceedings.

Prince William had not moved from the place where he had exited the hall. Tara dared not disturb whatever mood that had caused the Prince to insult so many guests, “And to compliment me so.” Tara refused to believe the latter. His sole reason for dancing with her was simply to prove himself quite capable and willing to dance, just not with any of them. And she was merely a possession of his that he could use to his liking, without disturbing his message.

Willow knew not of her farther disturbance, the dismissal of all other guests, but knew well that she had prematurely ended the celebration. She wondered briefly, where Peter was, to correct her mistakes or at least correct her harshly. He pestered her daily, intruding into her life where he was neither necessary nor wanted, and now he was nowhere in sight. She sighed. “I’m at a loss.”

As if waking from a dream, Willow remembered that she was not alone. What could she say to the Princess? “Yes, well, I would probably take you to your chambers for our consummation now, except that I can’t. And I can’t explain why that is.” Weakly, Willow turned to the Princess and smiled. Trying her best to remain formal, she blurted, “Princess, I will escort you to where you desire to be.” She chose her words carefully, knowing that with her manners, the Princess was likely to do as the Prince suggested even if he did not intend a bias.

To Tara, the sentence held more suggestion than Willow had intended. “Alright. I am to decide the place of union?” That was not entirely understood by Tara, who would have preferred not to know or remember any of this night. Straightening, Tara remembered her place, and braved, “My chambers.” It was too presumptuous to chose the Prince’s own, and she had no other options, though she would have liked to keep that part of her life for herself.

Willow breathed in a sigh of relief. “Oh good. She is tired as well. Maybe I didn’t end her evening too soon for her?” Aloud, she said. “Pray, I know not where to find your chambers, my lady. Would it vex you to lead me?”

Tara smiled lightly. The Prince was ever gentle with her. She hoped beyond reason that his demeanor passed into his manners elsewhere. Nodding once, she said quietly, “Of course, my lord. It would be my honor.”

Willow cleared her throat uncomfortably. “I should say something gracious,” Looking to the Princess with subtlety, “But I don’t wish to accidentally say something about her lips... or maybe her eyes, they’re nice...” Shaking her head to slight the uncharacteristic thoughts, Willow murmured, embarrassment still clouding her mind, “Thank you, my lady.”

As they neared the door to her chambers, Tara was certain that she was the only guest who had ever wished for a longer distance from the dining hall. She slowed to signal their proximity.

The wine was decidedly not freed her of it’s grasp as Willow stood in front of the Princess’ door. Willow turned to face the lady Tara, uncertain if she should open the door or remain rooted. “Better to lack an act, than to impede upon my limitations.” she thought. Bowing low, Willow spoke quietly, mysteriously unconfident of her faux-basso voice in the presence of her bride, “I bid you sleep well, good lady. May your dreams be pleasant.”

And with that, he was gone. Tara didn’t know whether to feel surprised or relieved. Confused, she decided, hit the mark fairly square. She opened the door to her room and climbed inside before he chanced to change his mind.

As Willow walked away from the Princess, her gait increasing with every other step, she tried not to think of her father and his intentions. He wouldn’t chance tonight. She hated leaving the lady with questions of her wedding night, but it was better than the answers.

But what if? The thought stopped her progressive steps. She didn’t want to chance that her father would surprise them all and attempt her bride this night.

Without knowing, or caring, how she would deflect the King, Willow turned on her heel walking back in the direction she had come from. Finding a vantage point where she could see and not be seen, she hunkered down for the night. She would wait all night, to be certain. “And what if I am discovered?” she thought warily. Stifling a yawn, Willow silently congratulated herself on the wedding, sarcastically. “Ah, the happily married couple.”

Oright, that was fun. Have good days, all, and I can't wait until Neverland is updated again.... it's sort of strange to be so into reading a fic, and simultaneously be writing one. I think.

yeah, k

Pray tell, dear writer, but I have no idea just what in the HELL is going on. Would it vex you greatly to enlighten me? :confused

Liked the update - not terribly hip to medeival royal customs, so I'm a bit aflounder- but damn glad you posted it. I'm just waiting for them to say more than 2 sentences to each other. I wanna see how Tara reacts when she finds out the truth about our dashing young prince. I have a pretty good suspicion she'll be happy, even if more than a smidge confused.

And if the king tries anything with Tara - well, just don't make me come over there!

That said - i anxiously await.

You know what they say about time flies when you're having fun? It definitely had the opposite effect here. Willow's time progressing agonizingly slowly in contrast with Tara's feeling that the end of the night was crashing upon her.

Again the sense that they are more objects than actual people. The expectation that the Prince will only dance once with his wife sounds strange to me, as is
Quote:
Willow realized that she didn’t know the proper dancing order for her own wedding celebration.

I thought Giles might discretely show up at her elbows to gently guide her, but alas.

Quote:
Prince William commanded, “We dance with our Princess.” and wine-scented-Willow insisted, “Pretty girl.”

Heh. :lol I'm glad that for once William agrees with Willow. And boy, what a pretty girl eh?

Tara must have been surprised. First at the uncharacteristic asking for her dance, then with the walking her back to her chambers where he promptly left her alone on their wedding night. Should she be feeling rejected now? Or perhaps he'll return later in the night? (I'm using "he" cos in Tara's mind she has been with her husband.)

The King had better stay far far away from the Princess' chambers tonight, and all nights forever!

I'm still trying to figure out how they could possibly get together. If sitting a dozen chairs from each other is considered close, I dare not think how being in the same chambers will be seen as. Then again, Willow could simply march inside and claim Tara as hers, providing she is confident Tara can keep the secret. The Prince is the second most powerful person in the land, it'll scandalize the court but there'll be all sorts of Gileses to control the flow of information.

So, the only person to deceive is the King. :hmm Intriguing.

You thought the udpate was short? It thought it was one of the longer ones for this story. And more than that, very well done. I really like the way you portray not only the conflicting emotions for both girls but the incredible pressure they are under. Each and every action they take has 100s of meanings socially. I mean the question of to dance with your wife? Wow, how crazy! Poor Willow. It's hard to tell if she's screwed things up politically or if she's doing impulsive but powerful things. And Tara? Complimented but shocked. Sweet of Will to walk Tara to her room and then more so, camping out? Wow and wow again. I love it.

Poor Willow attracted to Tara but realizing that her father is the one to get conjugal rights. Ewww. I like her staying cloe to prevent it for that evening but eventually things will come to a head. Poor Tara as well but she prolly has low expectations though meeting Willow has prolly changed that so she will be in for a shock. As always your rich descriptions wonderfully evoke the period. Great Update and not short at all!!!
