Title: The New Girl

Summary: Tara moves to Sunnydale and makes new friends and enemies. AU.

Author: SnoopyDancer (Jenn)

Disclaimer: Alas, not mine.

Okay, Kittens, I apologise for the lack of Willow/Tara in this chapter, but never fear! I won't let you down! Smoochies and all will be coming, but not after quite a bumpy ride. ;)

Part 5

____

As the day progressed, Tara started to feel better and better about herself, and found that she wasn’t stuttering half as much, especially when she was around Willow. The redhead made her feel completely relaxed and comfortable. It was a feeling Tara wasn’t really used to.

Anya’s words still confused Tara slightly, but she knew that Willow liked her, at least in a friend way, and that was enough to keep Tara smiling like she’d just been pumped full of happy pills.

At lunch, Tara sat with Willow, Buffy, Xander and Anya again. Buffy and Xander made conversation, but Anya stayed quiet. Tara suspected she’d been told not to say anything else by Xander. As was to be expected, the talk turned to families. Tara listened to the others, but didn’t say anything herself. She didn’t like talking about her home life.

“What about you, Tara?” Buffy inevitably asked. “Does your family drive you crazy too?”

You have no idea, she thought. “Um, I live with my mom and b-brother, Donnie,” she told them. “My parents got divorced a while back. Dad stayed in Alabama.”

“My folks are divorced too,” Buffy said. “My dad was never the family-man type. He ran out on my mom with his secretary. Last I heard, they were in Spain. I don’t really care about him. He never bothers to keep in contact, so why should I? I’m fine with my mom and Dawn.”

“D-Dawn?” Tara asked.

My sister,” Buffy explained. “She’s younger than me. She’s ten. And very annoying,” she added.

“No, she’s not,” Willow smiled. “Dawn’s a sweetie.”

“Say’s you,” Buffy grinned back. “You don’t have to live with her.”

“I wish I had a sister, or brother,” Willow sighed wistfully. “Maybe it wouldn’t be so lonely at home then.” She looked from Buffy to Tara. “You guys are lucky you’re not an only child.”

“Siblings aren’t all that great,” Tara felt the need to point out, while Buffy nodded in agreement. “D-Donnie and I don’t get on that w-well. He…he takes after my father.”

“And that’s not a good thing?” Anya frowned. Tara shook her head.

Xander shook his head. “Man, don’t get me started on sucky fathers. I’m telling you, Tara, I think mine would win the World’s Worst Dad prize.”

Although his tone was joking, Tara could see and hear some real pain and bitterness on the young man. She smiled at him in what she hoped was a reassuring way. Maybe they had something in common in that area.

“Buffy,” said a new voice from behind them. Tara recognised that voice somehow. She turned around and saw that it belonged to the brunette girl from her English class. Tara frowned as she struggled to place her name. And then she remembered: Faith.

But she didn’t look as confident or intimidating as she did before when she was arguing with Cordelia. Faith was looking at the ground, with her hair hiding her face. Tara knew this pose all too well. She did it all the time was she was nervous, scared or embarrassed. Judging by Faith’s tone when she spoke again, she felt all three.

“Buffy, can I talk to you for a sec?” Faith asked. She looked at the others, and then said pointedly to Buffy; “Alone?”

“Hey,” Xander said. “Whatever you’ve got to say to Buffy, you can say it in front of us.”

Tara wondered why Xander was being so harsh, and then noticed the looks of hostility Faith was receiving, even from Willow herself. And then Tara remembered what Cordelia had said about Buffy dumping Faith. Clearly there was something going on here that Tara didn’t know about. Although she wasn’t a naturally nosy person, she was curious and made a mental note to ask Willow later on.

“I wasn’t talking to you,” Faith snapped, obviously annoyed. Her angry gaze moved from Xander to Buffy, and her expression softened when it reached the blonde. “B, please? Five minutes, that’s all, I swear.”

“Faith, I told you,” Buffy said. Her voice sounded weary, as though she’d had this conversation many times. “I don’t want to talk to you.”

“Please,” Faith tried again. “I’m not gonna jump you, for crying out loud. I just want to talk. I have to explain.”

“There’s nothing to explain!” Buffy scowled. “There’s nothing to talk about. Don’t you get it, Faith? It’s over.”

“Buffy…”

Tara really felt for Faith. She could hear the raw desperation in her voice. Buffy turned away.

“No,” she said simply, not looking at Faith.

Faith looked upset, and then angry. “Fine, whatever,” she muttered, before turning away and walking off, disappearing into the crowd of people.

“Guys, I’ve gotta go,” Buffy mumbled, swinging her bag over her shoulder. “See ya.”

“Poor Buffy,” Willow sighed, watching her friend retreat.

But all Tara could think was, Poor Faith.

it's pretty common knowledge around here that i'm a huge Faith fan;) And i thought it was really interesting seeing her so vunerable (also loved the fact that you paired her with buffy, but if i start on that subject, i'll be here all night!:lol ) yet seeing a side of the 'old' Faith when she snapped at Xander. Curious as to what happened with her and buffy.... i hope we'll be finding out soon. can't wait for the next up date!

I am not so sure about the Faith in your story, but I have no sympathy for the Faith in canon.

Sad, vulnerable Faith? Well, sounds different from canon Faith... meh. It's kind of cute, but we'll see how it shapes up. So far the story's good.

It's insulting to the whole gender[sic] of rap.

Part 6

_____

“So,” Tara asked. “W-what’s the deal with Faith?”

It was her computer class, and Tara was thrilled to find that Willow was in it. The two sat together, and Willow (who, it turned out, was quite the expert in computers) helped Tara through the basics. Tara hadn’t had a computer at home, so she needed all the guidance she could get. And if her tutor happened to be Willow, well, that was just a bonus.

“What about her?” Willow asked, staring straight ahead at her computer screen.

“Well, y’know…at l-lunch, w-with B-Buffy,” Tara said. She thought it must be a testy subject for Willow, and she didn’t want to pry, so when Willow still didn’t respond, the blonde stayed quiet and asked no further questions.

To her surprise and relief, after a minutes silence, Willow spoke. “They were dating,” she said slowly, thoughtfully. “It was so sudden. Faith came to town, and started hanging out with Buffy. We all thought they were just friends, but then they announced they were seeing each other.”

“And…and you…didn’t like that?” Tara guessed tentatively.

“I don’t trust Faith,” Willow told her. “Buffy’s my best friend. I didn’t want to see her hurt. Faith isn’t big on commitment, but Buffy thought she could do no wrong.”

“B-but she did?” Tara frowned. “D-do wrong?”

Willow nodded darkly. “Oh, yeah. They were both at a party, and Faith disappeared. Buffy went to look for her, and found her with this guy, Spike.”

“Spike?!” Tara asked incredulously, feeling equal parts horrified by what Willow was telling her, but slight amusement at this guys ‘name’.

Willow nodded again. “Yeah. They were just kissing, but I don’t doubt it would have gone further if Buffy hadn’t interrupted them.”

“That’s awful,” Tara murmured, upset for Buffy.

Willow seemed to decide she wanted a change of conversation. She looked over at Tara’s pie-chart she was working on. “Need any help?” she offered.

Tara knew that Willow didn’t want to talk about Faith or Buffy any more. She nodded and smiled. “Yes, thank you. I have no clue what I’m doing, actually.”

Willow laughed. “Then let me teach you. It’s easy, once you get the hang of it. I’ll make a computer whiz out of you yet.”

The redhead leant over and placed her hand over Tara’s on the mouse. Tara blushed at the sudden contact, and felt a fluttering sensation in her stomach as Willow whispered in her ear; “I’ll show you what to do.”

As Willow proceeded to do just that, Tara tried to take all of the information in, but it was hard to focus when her heart was hammering like she’d run a 100 mile race. When the bell rang, signalling end of the lesson, Tara was both relieved and disappointed. Relieved because now she could concentrate on breathing normally again, but disappointed because Willow’s hand was no longer on hers.

Tara looked over at Willow, who was bent down, packing her bag, and she smiled. There was no doubt in her mind what she felt for the beautiful redhead, but she hoped that Willow felt the same way about her.

Willow straightened up and beamed at Tara. “Come on, I’ll show you to French,” she said, linking her arm with Tara’s and leading the way.

Hmm... indeed why did Faith do that to Buffy, not a smart move for sure :)

Willow and Tara are starting much more slowly, which might also build a longer lasting relationship in the end :lol . It's cute to see Willow teaching Tara, who has trouble controlling her ..breathing from merely being touched by Willow.

Anya's rather tactless comment has given Tara some (likely justified:-) hope that Willow likes her as well. I guess I should thank Anya for that because it will take Willow MUCH longer to say the same... ;-)

Okay, I have a feeling we're still not getting the whole story about Buffy and Faith and what happened with Spike. I can't see Faith with Spike, well, except for that time with the body swap when she told him "I could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up...", but hey, that didn't happen here.

So, I still would like to know the whole story, and maybe Buffy should listen too, then we'll know.

Now, let Willow show Tara how to French...I mean how to get to French. :wink

Part 7

I'm not too happy with this chapter, but oh well! Sorry about the lack of Willow. Here's a dancing banana to make up for it :banana (a poor substitute, I know, but he dances!)

_______

The end of the day bell rang, and there was a flurry of movement as students clamoured to get out of the door and go home. Tara stood up more slowly, and packed away her French books. Her mother was fluent in French, and Tara had been taught the language from a young age, so she had found the class relatively easy. Unfortunately, Willow wasn’t in her group, but Tara was meeting her at a club that night, called the Bronze. Willow had said it was the best – and pretty much only – club in Sunnydale, and Tara had agreed to meet her there at 8 o’ clock.

As she walked down the hall to her locker, she heard someone yell. “Hey! Hey, Blondie!” The only reason Tara knew that the person was calling for her, was that she recognised the Boston accent. She turned around, and sure enough, saw Faith.

Tara was uneasy around the brunette after what Willow had told her. “W-What d-do you w-w-want?” Tara asked, feeling nervous.

“You hang around with Buffy, right?”

Tara nodded. “Y-yes.” And then, feeling slightly braver, said; “Willow told me w-what you d-did to Buffy. W-with that guy.”

Faith sighed in frustration. “Listen, Red doesn’t have all the facts, and neither does B. If maybe they’d listen to me, then I could explain, before they go jumping to all the wrong conclusions about me. Willow’s been waiting for a reason to come down on me ever since she met me.”

“W-why w-would she do that?” Tara demanded angrily.

“’Cause she’s jealous,” Faith shrugged. At Tara’s shocked expression, Faith backtracked. “Oh, I don’t mean in that way. It’s never been anything but friends between her and B, but she never liked the idea of someone being closer to Buffy than herself.” Faith grinned lazily when she saw Tara relax. “You like her, Blondie?”

Tara didn’t answer. “I h-have a name, y-you know. It’s Tara.”

Faith nodded. “Right. I remember now. I’ve never been very good with names.” She got a mischievous look in her eye. “Now, admit it. You like Red. And not just in a friendship way.”

Tara felt herself blush. Am I that obvious? She wondered. She nodded, and Faith’s grin got wider.

“Okay then, I’ll make you a deal,” Faith said. “You help me get my girl, and I’ll help you get yours.”

Oh no...No deals. Deals always backfire. And when deals backfire, they just screw people over. Like a pastry, finely made and delicious. Then they spread sugary crud on it and it tastes horrible. Now Im not sure how to tie that and bad deals together, but I tell ya...Deals are never good news.
