**Jennpurr: Heh, thanks *G* And I'm actually going to try to set aside more writing time, so I can post whole parts instead of these little bits. I really prefer to put up longer pieces instead of these short things.

**Rane018: *G* Thanks! And that whole Angel/Buffy/Spike mugged scene was tough to write, because there was no W/T in it, but it was kind of important overall for the story, so I'm glad I have it out of the way *G*

**MissQuirky: Gosh, thanks - I'm really glad you're enjoying the fic, and thank you for posting *G* I love hearing from people.

**NoveltyAct: Cheeeeeeese! And yes, "whisk, woman!" should >totally< be your new sig, and that is, indeed, rather like the graveyard groove dance. *G*

**SlayerTazz: Well, yeah - of course she was enjoying the view - we ALL would, y'know ;) Thanks!

**VampNo12: I have to admit, I like the simple moments the best. Don't get me wrong - it's fun to watch them take on monsters and Hell Gods, and all that other stuff - but I like W/T best when they're just sitting around and being all silly with each other.

**NewRuthRising: Oh, I dare many things. It's part of my charm ;)

**WebWarlock: Heh, thanks *G* I'm really glad you're enjoying LD - I just hope I can live up to AD *G*

**Grimaldi: Well, wouldn't you? ;) And thanks *G* I'm really glad you enjoyed the update.

Sass...

when I read this fic...and it constantly reminds me how much I love the characters and the ESSENCE of them that you have captured... I get a kind of giddy high.

Truth be known...I am addicted to Sassfic.

I have to have it in the morning...in the night...and in the other times of the day when it's not morning or night.

When you had Tara checking out the "rear-view" as Willow searched for bowls I laughed out loud...big guffaws that travel...and now people think I'm crazy. And we all know I'm not crazy.

Thank yu for my Sassfix...I'll have to have another, you realize...to survive....

Just a little ... motivation

Postby Sassette » Thu Aug 08, 2002 3:35 pm

Just trying to motivate myself to write here - I figure if I do this, I'll feel bad about it later, and feel obligated to finish this next update ...

So ...

Coming Soon:

*****************************

"What could happen at school? Nothing interesting ever happens at school," Dawn said with a little shrug, her innocent words prompting a mixture of looks ranging from horror to alarm across the faces of the assembled Scoobies.

*****************************

"Willow?" Tara whispered, the hairs on the back of her neck rising as she looked around the classroom with wide eyes, her heart hammering in her chest.

*****************************

"I ... I don't know if I can do this," Willow gasped out, her body trembling where she stood. The wall of light before her shattered, and the darkness was freed, rushing towards her with malicious intent.

*****************************

"Dammit, Buffy, pick up quick," Anya said urgently into the phone as she dialled the number with shaking hands, glancing back and forth between the keypad and the huddled form on the grass in the quad. "Nothing to see here - move on!" she yelled as curious students slowed their pace.

Hey Sass,

I'm kinda a newbie here at the Kitten, so my friend suggested I read Answering Darkness and I got hooked straight away! I read it in my lunch hours, Came into work early to read it and I was sneaking into my old department to use thier computers to print it out to take home with me! I just got a promotion which means I have to work 11 hours of night shift (and it really hurts!)and I did FIVE hours of solid AD reading the other night just so I could start Lingering darkness the next night. I'm crazy I know but its very boring and painful on the night shift so I need a little distraction. I just love the way you right its fantastic the way you get so into the characters. So flattery + sympathy = update??? go on make my night!

Some Clarification

Postby Sassette » Thu Aug 08, 2002 7:04 pm

I am in California ... it is currently 6pm, and I just got home. It usually takes me 3-4 hours to crank out an update. What this means is ... if you're in the UK and you haven't gone to bed yet - get some sleep *G* You can read the update in the morning.

And yes, I'm a tease (it's one of my superpowers, but that's probably TMI, huh?), and no Autumn, I won't make you come over here. Or, y'know, post mean limericks.

And don't feel bad about making me feel bad - I don't really feel BAD bad, y'know? I just now feel like, if I don't get the update done tonight, I'm an awful horrible person who has let all you nice kittens down - by posting a teaser, I'm guilting myself into updating. See? It's all a part of my Master Plan.

Lingering Darkness - Part 4a

Postby Sassette » Thu Aug 08, 2002 11:22 pm

Title: Lingering Darkness Part 4 - Fitting In

Author: Sassette

Feedback: Can be sent to pink_overalls@yahoo.com

Summary: It's off to school. Yay, school!

Spoiler Warning: Up to and including "Tabula Rasa" in Season 6 and for the previous story, 'Answering Darkness'. For anyone who has NOT read Answering Darkness (or, come to think of it, people who are nuts enough to reread that monster), it's in the Completed Fics Archive here on the Kitten.

Disclaimer: I don't own these characters. The stories all mine, though.

Rating: PG-13

Notes: For the purpose of this story, all events of Tabula Rasa took place exactly as shown in the series; however, all subsequent events appear in the story 'Answering Darkness'. This story picks up where the previous one left off.

Lingering Darkness Part 4

Fitting In

By Sassette

Dawn picked at her pancakes nervously, looking around the room and getting that distinct belly rumblin's feeling. Something was off - something was wrong. Everyone was smiling just a little too widely, laughing a little too loudly, lending even this simple breakfast a darker edge that was, frankly, worrying her.

Had it always been like this? Had the Scoobies always been so … avoidy? No one was talking about anything, and there were so many things she didn't understand - so many things she wanted to know. She was scared, she admitted to herself. Glory was alive again - in Hell, yes, but alive, and that couldn't possibly be a good thing, could it?

Giles seemed to think it was, but when she had asked that morning, he had merely said to trust him. He might as well have patted her on the head and told her she was too young to be worrying about such things, she thought sourly, a scowl crossing over her face.

Of course she was worried about it. Sure, other kids - normal kids - got to worry about school and boys, but she had to worry that everyone she cared about - her family - could die any time. Sure, random things could happen to anyone, but she was the one who knew that her loved ones pitted themselves night after night against things most people didn't even believe in.

And she had to live with that.

But would it be so wrong for someone to just open their mouth and >talk< about it? Was there some kind of unwritten Scooby law that said that once the post-apocalypse meeting was over, and the pizza and movies started, no more was said on the matter? Maybe it would be easier if they wrote a handbook - a Scooby Handbook, so she could tell if this was normal for this abnormal group of people.

"Do the pancakes taste funny?" Tara asked softly, nudging Dawn with her shoulder and leaning in to whisper conspiratorially, a look of quiet concern on her face.

"Oh, no," Dawn said, shaking her head, her eyes widening as she realized she had been caught. "I'm liking the fruitiness," she said, pointing at the blueberries and smiling sheepishly. "I'm just … thinking."

"I know," Tara said, a wry look on her face. "I could tell."

"How?" Dawn asked, a puzzled look creasing her brow.

"Because you look just like Willow when you're thinking," Tara said with a little shrug.

"I do?" Dawn asked, surprise evident in her voice.

"Mm-hmm," Tara confirmed with a little nod. "You both get a little crinkle in your forehead right there," she said, tapping Dawn lightly between her eyebrows.

"Are you and Willow okay?" Dawn asked after a moment of silent contemplation. "I mean, really okay?" she clarified, indicating she wanted the truth. A part of her wanted to clamp down on the question, remembering all the times she had been asked over and over by different people if she was okay after her mother had died. But she hadn't been okay, and what a stupid question that had been. Of course she hadn't been okay - how could she be?

And how could Willow and Tara possibly be okay? She knew the answer - she knew that even for a Scooby thing, this had been particularly harsh on these two people she loved so very much. But she couldn't help asking - couldn't help looking to Tara for reassurance that the world hadn't suddenly tipped sideways, and things weren't all falling … that she wasn't falling.

"We will be," Tara said with conviction, and Dawn realized she had been holding her breath when it escaped her in pure relief.

It was, really, the only answer she would have accepted. She was too smart to just blindly accept the idea that everything was fine already - but the promise that it would be fine eventually? She could believe in that. She could believe in Willow and Tara, and the rest of the Scoobies, to make everything okay. Hadn't they defeated two Hell Gods? One of them twice? And the second time, no one had died, so they must be getting better.

"Family breakfast - no private conversations," Buffy said lightly, mock-glaring at Tara and Dawn, earning apologetic looks from them both. Buffy smiled reassuringly, even as a little piece of her felt stung by the private conversation.

Tara and Dawn were so close, she mused inwardly, eating her pancakes with gusto. Maybe it was a sister thing, but Buffy often felt like she couldn't relate to Dawn - couldn't really understand things from her point of view, because it was like she was too close to the situation to look at it objectively. Even before she had died and come back, there had been things about Dawn and what she thought and felt that she couldn't understand.

No, Buffy corrected herself with an internal wince. She hadn't had time to understand, what with saving the world and fighting the forces of darkness - but wasn't that just as bad? Was that a massive failing that was going to horribly scar Dawn for life?

She sighed inwardly, as the conversation picked up, Giles asking everyone what they were going to do that day. Maybe she was being too hard on herself. Did anyone make the transition from sibling to guardian gracefully? Was it even humanly possible?

"What about you, Buffy?" she heard Giles ask, breaking her from her thoughts.

"I, umm…" Buffy said, looking around the table, her heart clenching in her chest as every face she held dear turned towards her. "I thought maybe I'd go up to the campus today. Maybe sit in on Tara's classes?" she said hesitantly, looking around the room. She, of course, had an ulterior motive for making such a suggestion, but she had hoped to talk to Giles about it before she said anything. Nothing would happen - it was always quiet for at least a few days after an impending apocalypse was averted, but she knew that Willow and Tara had to be anxious about being away from each other, even just to go to school. If she stayed with Tara, and Giles stayed with Willow, she knew everyone would feel much better about the day.

Willow shot Buffy a pathetically grateful look, and Buffy knew she had made the right choice. Part of her wanted to glue herself to Willow's side until, well, forever, but she knew that Willow would feel better knowing that Tara was safe, and that meant sticking to Tara.

And, of course, she herself would feel better if someone was with Willow. Tara would feel better, too.

"Willow's classes are much more interesting," Tara said quickly. "You should hang out with Willow today."

"Oh, no," Willow said, shaking her head vigorously. "Buffy had a class day with me just last week. She should go with you," Willow argued.

"But if she went to class with you last week, she'd have a much easier time in your classes," Tara pointed out. "She'd have some context."

"Hello, I'm in the room," Buffy said, as Willow and Tara continued to argue about who she should go to class with, each putting forth point after point.

"But Buffy hated my computer classes … and I have the brain-hurting math class today. We don't want hurt Slayer-Brains. Hurt Slayer-Brains could lead to nasty demon infestations, and then the whole world as we know it could crumble … and, and … that would be … bad. Very muchly of the bad," Willow said sternly.

"I'll go with Willow."

Tara's jaw clicked shut, the words dying on her tongue as she - and everyone - turned to look at Anya, who sat there with a satisfied look on her face.

"Buffy will go with Tara, I'll go with Willow, Xander will go to work, Dawn will go to school, and Giles can run the Magic Box today and do more research between customers. It's really the only efficient allocation of resources," she said with a little shrug. "It's very simple economics."

"Works for me," Willow said cheerfully, taking a huge bite of her pancakes and grinning, the lack of appeal that spending a day with Anya held mitigated by the idea that Buffy would be with Tara. Was it wrong of her, she wondered, to trust only Buffy with Tara? She knew any of the other Scoobies would do anything they could to help Tara in any situation, but Willow only really had faith in Buffy's ability to look after her girl.

"Or Anya could go with me and Buffy could go with Willow," Tara put forth stubbornly, the idea of Willow having a Slayer Escort all day making her feel better already. "I mean, she >is< your best friend, and you two could have some quality best friend time, and Anya and I could have some quality best friend time."

"I'm your best friend? Really?" Anya asked excitedly, a wide grin crossing her face. "Or are you just saying that so Willow has the Slayer with her all day?" she pressed, her face falling.

"Oh, no!" Tara said, her eyes widening. "No, you >are< my best friend," Tara assured her with a nod, causing a mollified look to cross Anya's face.

"Of course, if you don't trust me with Willow …"Anya began slowly.

"I do trust you," Tara said quickly. "This isn't about trust - this is about … well, it's … Buffy's the Slayer," Tara finished weakly.

"Well, I think it's perfect," Willow said, her eyes twinkling as she was sure she was going to win. "I don't get to spend nearly enough time with Anya."

"Okay, now that's just weird," Anya said, casing a suspicious look in Willow's direction. "Did you hit your head in Hell?"

"I don't see what the big deal is - you're just going to classes. What could happen at school? Nothing interesting ever happens at school," Dawn said with a little shrug, her innocent words prompting a mixture of looks ranging from horror to alarm across the faces of the assembled Scoobies.

"Praying Mantis substitute teacher," Xander said slowly.

"Bezoar eggs," Buffy said, a sour look on his face.

"You're forgetting the Vengeance Demon," Anya said, pouting. "Why does everyone always forget the Vengeance Demon?"

"Ooh! Ooh! Restless spirits!" Willow cut in, remembering one.

"That was college, sweetie. Lowell House," Tara said.

"Oh, that too," Willow said with a little shrug. "But I was talking about good ol' Sunnydale High. 'Cuz there was this teacher and this student, and way back they had this affair, and …"

"Can we not talk about this one?" Buffy said, looking at Willow, then cutting her eyes over to Dawn significantly.

"And, uhhh … he was eighteen, and he had already graduated, so it was okay, and they lived happily ever after," Willow said.

"But that was high school - so you only had one weird thing happen in college? So, Hellmouth-wise, college is safe, then," Dawn pressed.

"Demon roommate," Buffy said.

"Demon surgeons cutting out hearts," Willow pointed out.

"Doesn't count," Dawn said stubbornly, shaking her head. "That was all of Sunnydale."

"Well, most of the murders >were< in the dorms," Xander pointed out reasonably.

"Xander, you're not helping," Dawn said, shooting a glare his way. "My point is - broad daylight, UC Sunnydale campus, it doesn't matter who goes where, because it's going to be fine."

"Oh, the Construct!" Anya said, raising her hand.

"Quiet, Anya," Willow hissed, immediately pasting an innocent look on her face and turning towards Tara. Apparently, Xander had filled Anya in on everything that had happened while she and Tara had been on the road. Willow certainly hadn't been intending to mention that the Construct had followed her on-campus.

Tara's eyes narrowed. "What aren't you telling me?" she asked quietly, looking at Willow searchingly. Willow's innocent expression crumbled under that knowing gaze, and she sighed.

"It wasn't a big deal," she said with a little shrug. "I mean, the Construct isn't even around anymore, and y'know, most of the demons in Sunnydale - vampires. And, Hello - Sunlight! They'd go poof, so I'll be fine. Nothing to worry about - nothing at all."

"Besides, I was a Vengeance Demon for a thousand years," Anya said, a little perturbed that no one ever seemed to take that seriously. Maybe if they had actually >seen< her eviscerate someone, she'd get a little more respect. Then again, they'd probably all be afraid of her, and she didn't want that - these were her friends. "And I've been a Scooby for three. Two and a half," she corrected herself with a little frown. "No, three. Doesn't matter," she decided, waving her hand in the air as if brushing aside the idea. "The point is, I'm a Scooby, so I can kick a bad guy in the groin and yell for help with the best of them. And here," she said, taking out her cell phone and tossing it to Buffy. "If we have any problems, we'll call, okay?"

"What if you can't get to a phone?" Tara asked, frowning slightly.

"Here," Xander said, pulling out his matching phone and trading with Buffy, handing Anya's phone back to her. "Buffy have Xander-Phone. Anya have Anya-phone. Willow, Tara and Dawn have school. Me drive."

"Yes, well, I don't think I could have put that better myself," Giles said, restraining himself from rolling his eyes, despite the undignified urge welling up inside of him. "I'll go ahead and clean up, then open the shop," he said decisively, rising from his chair.

Lingering Darkness - Part 4b

Postby Sassette » Thu Aug 08, 2002 11:25 pm

"That's a strong plan," Anya said, nodding happily. "Opening the shop a little late is good sense, because it saves on electricity, salary, and wear and tear on the carpet and furnishing, as there are rarely any sales early in the morning, and when there are, they usually don't cover expenses," she finished, looking over at Willow. "It lowers overhead," she said, nodding again, as a slow smile crossed Willow's face.

"You remembered," Willow said with a little laugh.

"I never forget anything that has to do with money," Anya said with a little shrug. "So, let's go," she said, not waiting for a response and heading for the front door, sure that everyone would follow her.

"So, umm … how are we going to do this?" Xander asked when they all got outside, looking at his car dubiously. It could seat five fairly comfortably, but six was pushing it. "I'm not sure we're all going to fit in there."

"Willow can sit in Tara's lap," Dawn said innocently.

"Oh, or I could sit in Xander's lap!" Anya said excitedly.

"Hon - a little distracting for the driver," Xander said, a little smile quirking his lips as he looked at Anya fondly.

"Just, everyone pile in," Buffy said, rolling her eyes and opening the door, the front passenger seat forward and crawling in. Tara shrugged and climbed in after Buffy, followed quickly by Anya.

"Umm … I think I could probably …" Willow said, biting her lip and looking at the back seat thoughtfully. "Yeah," she said with a little nod and a mischievous look, crawling across the three other women in the back seat, until she was laying across their laps, her feet propped up on Anya, and her head resting against Buffy. "Hi," she said cheerily.

"Now that's my Willow," Buffy said with a laugh, the return of Willow's humor and silliness more than welcome.

"Sweetie, I don't think this is safe," Tara said with a little frown, her hand naturally coming to rest on Willow's tummy and rubbing it slowly.

"You can be my human seatbelt. You won't let me go, right?" Willow asked, looking at Tara with a smile.

"Never," Tara said, a slow grin crossing her face despite herself.

"Mmmm…" Willow said, a little smile crossing her face as she shut her eyes. "I could take a nap here. You guys are comfy," she said, wiggling around to make her point.

"Dorks," Dawn said, though there was no sting to her tone as she rolled her eyes and pushed the front seat back, settling herself in and buckling up.

"If I get pulled over, I'm taking you all to jail with me," Xander said, shaking his head - but laughing - as he climbed into the driver's seat and shut the door, turning on the engine and slowly backing out of the driveway. "Everyone got their human seatbelt?" he asked.

Affirmative yells greeted him from the back seat, and he stifled a grin as he pulled onto the road, heading towards Dawn's school.

He had certainly done a lot of driving this past week, going here, going there, shuttling people back and forth. Is that what being an adult was about? Driving around? Would he eventually drive his kids to Little League practice and piano lessons? Did Anya even want kids?

With a frown, he peered into the rearview mirror, looking at Anya quickly before turning his attention back to the road and shifting in his seat. Did >he< want kids? It was kind of the natural progression of things - meet girl, fall in love, get married, have kids. Start drinking. Become embittered and spiteful. Ruin lives.

Xander shook his head, clearing away that line of thinking. There was no point in thinking about that. If there was one thing he had learned on the Hellmouth, it was that no matter how scary something seemed, if he just dug a little deeper and gave it all he had, with his friends at his side, they could defeat anything. It was a niggling fear, in the back of his mind, that he and Anya would become like his parents. Except for Joyce, he had certainly had no positive parental role-models in his life, and he assumed Anya hadn't either - or if she had, she didn't remember them, it was so long ago. But did that mean he would become his father? That Anya would become his mother?

No, of course not. He was the Captain of his Fate and all that stuff he barely paid attention to in high school. Willow would remember the whole thing - Willow was great for things like that. She'd be great with kids, too, he mused. His kids would love their Aunt Willow, and their Aunt Tara, and Aunt Buffy and Aunt Dawn. All in all, he was a lucky man, he decided, a wide grin crossing his face as he drove.

He had a family that he knew beyond a doubt would never let him down, and that he'd do everything in his power to make sure he never let them down, either. He might mess up sometimes, because those things happened, but part of being family was forgiving, wasn't it? And knowing - knowing as deeply as it was possible to know something - that he always had a place in the world. His place was with these people, driving them around wherever they wanted to go.

"All right, Dawnster," Xander said cheerily as he pulled smoothly up to the curb. "You got all your homework and stuff?" he asked, as Dawn stepped out of the car.

"You're asking me that now?" Dawn asked, raising an eyebrow at him as she waved, walking backwards a few steps and smiling as everyone wished her a good day, then turning and heading into the school.

"Okay, that's enough smooshy-Willow," Willow said, trying to sit up. "Could someone, ummm … move the front seat?" she asked. Anya reached forward, bending awkwardly over Willow's seat and finding the catch to push it forward, then everyone helped her sit up and crawl out of the car, until a breathless and red-faced Willow stood on the curb. "Okay, it's a lot harder getting out than getting in."

"So you're saying Tara's easy?" Anya asked with a smirk, her mind immediately jumping to naughty things as she got out of the car.

"She is not!" Willow protested immediately, her eyes widening.

"You're the one who said getting in was easy, and getting out was harder," Anya pointed out as a grumbling Willow crawled into the back seat next to Tara.

"Tara, she's twisting my words," Willow whined, pulling her legs up to her chest and resting her head on Tara's shoulder.

"Don't listen to her, sweetie," Tara said, stroking Willow's hair soothingly. "She's just trying to get a rise out of you."

He'd definitely have to have more than one kid, Xander mused as Anya got into the car and he pulled away from the curb. Willow and Anya could teach them how to bicker.

"Why would I want to get a rise out of Willow? It's an exercise in futility - she doesn't have the parts," Anya pointed out, turning in the front seat and peering over the headrest.

"Anya!" Xander said, his mind already imagining little ones running around.

"What?" Anya asked innocently.

"You sure you can spend a whole day with her?" Tara asked Willow softly, tuning out Xander and Anya's argument. "It's not too late to trade, y'know. You could spend the day with Buffy."

"Absolutely not," Willow said, shaking her head against Tara's shoulder, a small smile crossing her face. "You going to have a Slayer Shadow all day, and you're going to like it. I can handle Anya. She's just … she's so …"

"Outrageously straightforward and given to taking the most innocent comment as innuendo?" Tara asked.

"Right," Willow said with a little shrug. "Nothing I can't handle for a few classes. It'll be a breeze."

"I'm going to remind you that you said that," Tara said, turning her head and placing a light kiss on Willow's hair. They sat in silence, each enveloped in a sense of peace that not even Xander and Anya having a 'discussion' about appropriate comments could mar, sighing in unison and smiling as their eyes drifted shut.

"UC Sunnydale, last stop of the Xander Bus," Xander said, bringing Willow and Tara back to the present with a start. "Hey, you two okay?" he asked, having turned to look into the back seat when they both jerked awake.

"Yeah, fine," Willow said, blinking her eyes. "Just kind of … snoozed a bit, I guess," she said with a shrug and a sheepish smile.

"Haven't been sleeping, huh?" Anya asked knowingly, getting out of the car and moving the seat so the rest of the women could pile out.

"Anya, are you going to taunt Willow all day?" Buffy asked exasperatedly.

"As long as it's still fun," Anya said cheerfully, closing the door, then leaning in the open window to give Xander a kiss. "Have a good day at work, honey."

"And you have fun with school," Xander said. "And try not to piss Willow off too much, okay? For me?" he asked, batting his eyelashes outrageously. Anya reached into the car and swatted him on the shoulder.

"Fine, but only for you," she said, mock-pouting and crossing her arms. "But you owe me!" she shouted after him as he pulled away. "What?" she asked, looking over to find Buffy, Willow and Tara exchanging bemused looks.

"And you said I was whipped," Willow said with a smirk.

"You are," Anya said with a little shrug. "I just don't mind listening to Xander when he tells me to be nice to you now, because I get it."

"Get what?" Tara asked curiously, as they started to walk onto campus.

"I get that Xander doesn't want to have orgasms with Willow, because he loves both of us, but he loves us in different ways. Willow is like his power center," she said.

"His power center?" Willow asked, raising her eyebrows.

"Right," Anya said, nodding. "Like, when I had my Vengeance Demon pendant, it was with me for a thousand years. I don't really remember not having it - that's all kind of blurry - and when I lost it, I was angry and scared and confused, and I just felt terrible. I was very, very lost. If you ever went away, Xander would feel like that, only worse, and I understand now."

Willow blinked a few times, digested Anya's words. Had Anya just …? Yes, she had. "I … thank you, Anya," Willow said slowly, a puzzled look on her face.

"Well, this is where we head the other way, and I'm kind of running late," Tara said slowly, looking down the path that led to her classroom. "I, umm … have a good day, sweetie," she said, looking over at Willow, watching her carefully.

"You, too," Willow said, hugging Tara close before letting go.

"I'll take good care of her, Wills," Buffy promised seriously, squeezing Willow's arm lightly. Willow just nodded and gave a little wave, finding herself unable to speak as Tara and Buffy walked away.

"So, which way to class?" Anya asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet once and looking around the campus.

"Ummm … that way," Willow said, pointing at the opposite path. She looked at the pavement running through the lawn lined by bushes and paused, a puzzled look on her face. Was that … was that the way to class? It was, she knew, but it looked … wrong, somehow. Her head tilted to the side as she looked closer, her mind turning over images of this exact path and mentally comparing them to what she was looking at now.

"This way?" Anya pointed, looking on as Willow seemed suddenly confused.

"Yeah, this way," Willow said, trying to shake off the feeling and heading down the path, not noticing the worried look on Anya's face as she followed.

The path curved the right way, the surrounding bushes and things all looked the same, Willow considered. The hallway she was in was just the way it had always been, but it seemed … different somehow. It was like … it was like she was looking at it all on a TV screen. It looked exactly the way it was supposed to, but … unreal. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was, but something seemed so very strange about the familiar halls of UC Sunnydale.

Trying to shake off the thought, she pushed open the door and stepped into the computer lab, quickly finding her seat and pulling up a chair for Anya.

"So what is this class?" Anya asked, looking around curiously.

"It's, uhh, SQL programming," Willow said distractedly, frowning as familiar students sat in familiar places, somehow creating an overall sense of wrongness to it all.

"Sequel programming?" Anya asked with a smile. "Like, where do you schedule Terminator 2 in your TV line-up, and how do you take out all the swearing?"

"No," Willow said with a frown. "'S' 'Q' 'L' … it stands for 'Structured Query Language'. It's database stuff. Computer stuff. Buffy made the exact same joke," she realized, looking at Anya sharply.

"I know," Anya said, her grin widening. "Buffy told me about it."

"Does anything happen to one Scooby that the rest of the Scoobies don't find out about within a day?" Willow asked, a wry look on her face.

"Well, none of us still know exactly what you and Tara went through in Hell," Anya pointed out.

Willow's whole body stiffened and her eyes widened as her heartbeat sped up. "Let's not talk about that," Willow said quickly, wiping suddenly damp palms on her jeans. "I … let's just not."

"Fine, keep it bottled up inside," Anya said with a shrug. "It's just going to be worse in the long-run."

"I just don't want to talk about it," Willow said harshly, turning to her computer and booting it up as the professor walked into the class.

Anya opened her mouth to speak again, but was silenced by Willow's glare and her nod towards the teacher, indicating class was starting.

Bored, she watched Willow work on the problems the professor presented, trying to make some sense of what Willow was doing. It looked fairly straightforward, and she figured she could probably do the basics if someone explained it to her, but she didn't really feel the need to learn anything about databases. If she wanted a database, she could talk Xander into talking Willow into making her one.

"Damn," Willow muttered as her computer beeped at her. Shaking her head, she retraced the lines she had just typed, looking for the gross error the computer had found. "Stupid 'Group By' clause," she muttered, shaking her head at the elementary mistake she had made. "Shouldn't it just automatically 'Group By' any field that isn't aggregated?" she mumbled, glaring at the screen in front of her.

The problems the professor had given them to work on were easy - she knew that - but she kept making mistakes. It was like her brain just wasn't in it today, and she couldn't seem to concentrate on what she was doing.

She couldn't, really, concentrate on anything, she found. Her mind seemed to be buzzing along, but she couldn't track down any one coherent thought. White noise seemed to be filling up her head, drowning out her thoughts and keeping her from doing what she would have thought were fairly simple tasks.

A flash of a vision of deep dark water flared across her mind as a cold chill tore through her, and she stifled a gasp. She couldn't gasp - couldn't breath in, because if she did, she'd swallow the water, and she'd drown.

As quickly as it came, it left again, and Willow opened the eyes she had automatically squeezed shut, trying to block out the sight of drowning souls, to find herself back in the computer lab. She looked around, blinking for a moment, then wiped her face with shaky hands, turning her attention back to the monitor in front of her.

Frowning, she tried the SQL statement again, and again, finally getting it right on the third try. With a frustrated growl, she started in on the second problem, buckling down as Anya watched with a confused expression on her face.

Four tries later, the statement executed, and Willow felt ready to toss her monitor across the room. Shaking her head, she tried to clear out the noise bouncing around the inside of her skull, starting on the third problem, only to find the rest of the class packing their books, and the professor calling out the reading assignment.

Willow's eyes widened as she watched everyone leave, a look of shock on her face. Had it really taken her that long to get through two problems? She had only gotten two done?

"Willow? Are we going?" a voice asked from behind her, and Willow jumped in her seat, her heart hammering in her chest until she realized it was just Anya.

"Yeah … yeah," Willow said weakly, grabbing her bookbag and hefting it over her shoulder, following Anya out of the classroom.

"Are you okay?" Anya asked after they had walked in silence awhile. Willow had seemed … not herself. Anya certainly hadn't understood what was going on in the classroom, but she knew enough about Willow and computers to know that Willow should have been able to do the problems easily, but she seemed stuck.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Willow said automatically, looking around the campus in confusion. It was all wrong - everything was all wrong. Was this even the right school? UC Sunnydale always gave her a warm fuzzy, but this was just … she felt nothing at all as she looked around, except an eerie kind of detachment. She had always … belonged … here. Now, she didn't feel like she fit in anymore.

"Are you sure?" Anya pressed again, seeing the look of utter bewilderment on Willow's face. "You look a little …"

Anya's voice faded in Willow's hearing, replaced by a menacing voice - a voice she had heard in her dreams, taunting her as it had taunted her in Hell.

"You can't stop me," it whispered to her, the dark chilling tones sending a shiver up her spine, the warm sunlight of mid-morning no longer enough to warm her.

She looked around, the shadowy image of a cave superimposed over the strange familiarity of the campus quad. Her eyes widened, and she backed away, her mind grasping for something real to hold on to.

"Willow?" Anya said, her tone and volume making it clear it was not the first time she had called Willow's name.

With a start, Willow looked at Anya, her unfocused eyes blinking several times before the images cleared, and she could see that familiar face before her.

"Yeah, I just … I kind of …" Willow began to say, when movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention, and she turned her head. A camera … a group of friends, laughing and talking … a flash.

The light rushed forward, containing the darkness, keeping it at bay, and Willow looked around wildly. Tara. She had to get to Tara … to keep Tara safe.

"Willow?" Anya asked again, seeing Willow's face go completely white. She frowned and stepped forward, placing a hand carefully on Willow's forearm.

"Oh, God," Willow said, shrinking back when something came into contact with her arm. "I ... I don't know if I can do this," Willow gasped out, her body trembling where she stood. The wall of light before her shattered, and the darkness was freed, rushing towards her with malicious intent. With a small cry, her knees buckled, and she crawled away backwards, trying to escape the shadows - the Trickster - as they swarmed over her.

Eyes wide, Anya reached for her cell phone, and quickly opened it, slowly approaching Willow, trying not to startle her. "Dammit, Buffy, pick up quick," Anya said urgently into the phone as she dialed the number with shaking hands, glancing back and forth between the keypad and the huddled form on the grass in the quad. "Nothing to see here - move on!" she yelled as curious students slowed their pace.

In a classroom across campus, Tara looked up from her notes. "Willow?" she whispered, the hairs on the back of her neck rising as she looked around the classroom with wide eyes, her heart hammering in her chest. She turned and looked at Buffy, her face pale and stricken.

"Tara? Did something happen?" Buffy asked, only to feel her own face drain of color when she heard the cell phone ring. "Oh, God - Willow," she said, picking up the phone and dashing out of the classroom, Tara close on her heels.

Good Sass. I continue to enjoy Anya here and frankly now I'm all a-scared for Willow. Any Willow that can't solve simple SQL problems is, well, like me. And that is bad. :)

Oh wow, i was going to be all jokey cause well, hey liking the fruitiness but it got so dark.. man. I guess w/t had good reason for being afraid to be away from each other. What's up with Willow! It was just such a light thing (willow in the car) and turned terribly dark, I really felt Willow's fear. Great update.
