Disclaimer – Willow and Tara and any other character that appeared in the syndicated television show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is property of Joss and Mutant Enemy, I’m only borrowing them and am not making any money off them. All the others are mine though. Also the title for the fic is a Michelle Branch song so credit goes to her and part names will be named after various songs I like that fit nicely with the story so credit will be given there.
Summary – Set slightly in the future, 24-year-old Willow and Tara run into each other, it’s set mostly in New York so no Sunnydale or hell mouth or anything. Just good ol’ fashioned romance.
Part 7 Knock on Wood (Mighty Mighty Bostones)“TERMITES, what the hell do you mean I have termites.” Willow asked the goofy little man who was wearing a cap that amazingly looked like an ant.
“The signs on the wood here indicate that you have termites Ms Rosenberg.” The pest controller stated as he pointed to one of the supporting beams in her newly refurnished apartment.
“You think something would go right for me, I’ve spent the last four days at my friend Sam’s place as I was broken into whilst I was away. She has her mother up for the weekend and well we don’t really get along. I have nowhere to stay if you throw me out you realise?” Willow was agitated as she explained her unfortunate circumstance to the small man.
“Sorry miss, I can’t make you get this place fumigated but remember it’s your place and those termites will chew straight through those beams.” He tried to be sympathetic but it wasn’t working very well.
“Fine, but I’m not one bit happy about this.” Willow pouted as she signed the papers to give her authority for the man to do his job and get rid of the pests.
“There will be hell to pay if any of my new stuff gets ruined.” She warned as she slammed the door in his face. To say she was upset was probably understatement of the century.
… … … …
Willow and Sam sat in their usual café, sipping from the novelty oversized mugs that the café used.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe how much bad luck you’re having. You know mom would love to have you over for the weekend.” Sam was trying very hard to suppress the laughter that boiled in her belly before eventually loosing out.
“Yeah laugh all you want missy, but remember what comes around goes around.” Willow teased her friend, “Oh god what am I going to do?” Willow said as she slumped her head into her folded arms on the table.
“Well you could stay with that certain someone you kinda have a massive thing for.” Willow had already thought of asking Tara for a place to stay but it wasn’t a large place and she felt she’d be overcrowding everyone with Alex living there despite the fact that while working on the report she’d spent many nights there. Also Willow found herself incredibly anxious around the blonde since they returned from their trip. She often wondered what would have happened had Sam not phoned when she did. Willow felt her heart flutter at a million miles an hour when she was around Tara and hoped that her feelings didn’t overwhelm her at the wrong time, though she wasn’t sure if there would be a right time at all.
“Yeah well despite the fact she already has a roomy, it’d be kinda weird sharing a place with someone you’re totally falling for.” Willow pointed out to her friend.
“So tell her already, it’s as plain as day that she likes you back.” Sam replied, stating those facts for the millionth time.
“I was before a certain phone call interrupted me, besides how can you be so sure about her feelings if I’m not?” Willow asked but made sure to point out the first part to make sure Sam felt a little guilty.
“Sorry for the millionth time, would you have preferred it if I kept your house getting broken into?” Sam was at her wit’s end, Willow had been a stress ball ever since she returned and quite frankly Sam was almost looking forward to having her mother down.
“Yeah I know, I’m just a big spazz at the moment.” Willow sighed once again, she wondered about just when did her life become so complicated and confusing. About the same time a certain blonde showed up and totally rocked her world, she answered her own thought.
“Look I knew that you were head over heels over Tara, you got to trust me on this Will I can see these things. I’m like cupid with clothes, well most of the time anyway.” Sam smiled slyly at her comment.
“You mean sometimes.” Willow smiled herself as she raised her head of the table and both girls giggled at the comment.
“Okay maybe me and cupid aren’t that different, but he does have a bow and arrow. Something I unfortunately don’t.” Sam smiled at the redhead.
“What the hell would you want a bow and arrow for?” Willow asked with a quizzical look upon her face.
“Um… I’m not really sure.” Sam replied and both girls giggled once again.
“So you’ll ask Tara then?” Sam changed the subject with her persisting tone.
“I don’t know.” Willow answered warily.
“I can arrange an Alex free weekend.” Sam offered and raised her eyebrow suggestively. This brought a firm smile to Willow’s face.
“If you arrange an Alex free weekend, I’ll ask Tara.” Willow compromised with her friend as they both continued to grin at the newly discussed deal.
“Deal.” Sam replied as she winked her approval at the new developments.
“Well a weekend with Tara, alone at her place could be just what I need to cure the blues, or it could drive me completely insane.” Willow pondered in her head, either way she knew she couldn’t wait, pending the blonde’s approval of course.
… … … …
Willow and Tara sat on the couch watching the television with keen interest. Well Tara was anyway, Willow was still building the courage to ask her to stay for the weekend, let alone how she felt about the other girl.
Tara noticed Willow keep looking at her through the corner of her eye and smiled at the feeling of being watched by the redhead. Tara’s attention shifted from the t.v to Willow and back and forth, though she never once shifted her head. She didn’t want Willow to know she was looking at her also. The door opening distracted the two watching t.v as Alex walked in with some groceries, placing the bags on the kitchen table then sorting through them.
“Oh Tara, looks like you have the house to yourself this weekend. It seems as though Sam has set me up on a weekend date with a friend of hers.” Alex explained as he started packing away the food into the fridge.
“Oh okay.” Replied Tara, a little stunned by the sudden announcement but happy for her friend none the less.
“Hey what are you doing this weekend?” Tara directed her question to the redhead sitting next to her, wondering if perhaps they could do something together. Tara smiled at the thought in her head that was saying it’s just another excuse to spend more time with her. “But a damn good excuse.” She reminded herself and smiled at herself.
“Um actually I was gonna ask you for a place to stay as mine’s being fumigated, pesky termites.” Willow scolded the termites then turned and grinned hopefully to Tara. The beaming smile on Tara’s face showed the blonde’s obvious satisfaction of this pleasant turn of events.
“Yay, slumber party.” Tara squealed and Willow looked kinda surprised at how well Tara was taking the news that she’d need a place to stay. Though it did fill Willow with a sense of hope that maybe, just maybe Sam was right about Tara. Alex just laughed at the thought himself, how he wished he could stay and watch the slumber party but when Sam said that he needed to leave for the weekend for the good of their relationship he knew he had to. As to what exactly he would be doing he didn’t know, but if his best friend the object of her affection got together because of it, he’d do just about anything.
… … … …
Tara heard her intercom buzz as she raced over to answer it. “Hey” Tara said into the little speaker, licking her fingers from the chocolate the covered them from her afternoon baking session.
“It’s only me Tar, I’ve got all my stuff.” Willow voice responded through the little speaker.
“Okay, I’ll buzz you through.” Tara replied as she pressed the button to allow Willow access to the building.
“Hey.” Willow said as she finally made her way inside the apartment. She flopped her stuff on the couch and turned to see Tara working in the kitchen. Tara was wearing the bandanna that Willow had seen her in the first time she’d seen Tara, I simple white t-shirt with a picture of a koala bear and a simple pair of denim overall. It amazed Willow how sexy Tara looked in her everyday weekend clothes.
“Got everything?” Tara asked, making sure that Willow had left nothing behind before she couldn’t go back into her apartment. Willow quickly scanned everything to make sure everything was in order and smiled her approval to the blonde who simply smiled back.
“So what you making?” Willow asked as she got up and made her way into the kitchen where Tara was working so effortlessly. She breathed in heavily, taking the aroma of Tara’s wonderful cooking in with it and sighed in pleasure at the wonderful smell.
“Chocolate fudge, it’s for dessert, I have a chicken roasting for tea if you don’t mind.” Tara smiled at Willow who was still taking in the pleasant smell of Tara’s cooking.
“Mmmm it smells so good. I haven’t had a roast in ages but that’s probably because the things I cook don’t taste like the things they are.” Tara laughed at Willow’s comment as images of eating a cow that tasted like a pig entered into her mind.
“I didn’t even know you could cook.” Willow stated as she dipped her finger into the chocolate fudge and promptly copped a playful clip on the fingers from Tara.
“Don’t do that missy.” Tara stated and gave Willow a playful stern stare. “My dad’s a pastry chef and mom’s a head chef for a small restaurant. To say me and my brother ate well when we were younger is the understatement of the century.” Tara smiled as she remembered the countless cuisine meals her parents had made for her and her and Donnie.
“Wow, I think my mom put the owner of the local Chinese shop kid’s through college.” Willow laughed as memories of fried rice racked her brain. Tara couldn’t help but giggle with the redhead, as the same thought filled her head.
“Wow I can’t believe I didn’t know that about your parents, in fact I don’t even know their names.” Willow frowned as this sudden realisation came through.
“Steve and Susan.” Tara replied simply, Willow understood straight away that these were the names of her parents.
“Mine are Ira and Sheila. These are things friends should know about each other, we should know all sorts of things about each other when in actual fact I don’t really know nothing outside of your life from here.” Willow answered then stated a fact that totally alarmed her. Here she was falling head over heels for this girl and she didn’t even know she had a brother. Willow doubted anything Tara would say about her past or who she was would change the way she felt about her and if anything her feelings made her more than curious to know everything there was to know about Tara Maclay.
… … … …
Willow and Tara sat at the kitchen table opposite each other. They had been at the table eating incredibly slowly, it’d been two and a half hours since Tara had placed the roast chicken in front of them and while the main course was long gone, a bowl of chocolate fudge rested in front of both of them still.
Willow had found out that Tara came from a small community in Cleveland, it was a community where everyone knew everyone, much like a country town except they had the big city right at their footstep. Tara had a brother and her mom and dad were still very much in love, or at least they hadn’t given her any reason to believe otherwise. Her Gran had passed away about six months before she left and it had been a very sad time for all the family. Tara hadn’t dated a lot since, well ever and that fact sat rather well with the perky redhead. Though the fact that Tara shouldn’t be wearing a white wedding dress when her eventual day comes gave Willow a rather jealous twinge. Tara had been a good kid at school, she often competed, trying to get better grades than her brother but found it impossible to beat straight A’s. Tara was given a kitten for her fifth birthday and had loved the cat for everyday of its fourteen-year life span. She’d been deeply upset when he passed away, as he’d been a great companion in some of the most difficult years of her life. She often wished that she still had “Bonkers” around so that she could have someone to talk to, tell anything to. Willow assured her that if she ever needed someone she would always be there for her.
Tara herself had found out plenty about Willow. Willow was born and bread New York. She’d spent her childhood in a Jewish section of Queens where her parents were still prominent figures. She was an only child and while Willow loved the extra attention being an only child, she often craved for a brother or sister when her parents couldn’t be there because of their sometimes-busy schedule. Tara was relieved to find that Willow’s parents hated leaving Willow behind on their early business trip and would always make up for it with a family day to the zoo or park. It was something Willow wanted to make a regular occurrence of when she finally had kids, the family day that is. Tara found out that Willow’s plans were to make the most of her time until her early thirties before settling done and having a family. She didn’t want to be a stay at home mom but she knew once she had kids that it would hopefully be the end of her jet setting and promotion chasing days. Willow explained that her only pets as a child had been some goldfish but she’d woken up one morning to find nothing in her tank but a green tree frog. She’d had a fear of frogs ever since, she explained that they were really deadly killers just waiting for the right time to pounce, and with the strong hind legs, pouncing was something they were good at. Tara couldn’t help but giggle at the thought of being scared of frogs. It endeared her how the same woman who helped her stand up to two big men just after she’d moved here was afraid of a little green amphibian. Tara found this fact rather cute as it accentuated Willow’s softer side.
The two girls had continued their conversation in Tara’s bedroom, lying either side of each other on the large king size bed. They talked until the wee hours of the morning about their past, who they were now and what they planned to do in the future. They had eventually dozed off due to the extreme earliness of the morning and when they awoke later on in the day they would once again find themselves entwined with each other.
… … … …
“Right hand, blue.” Tara said as she looked at the needle on the dial and where it had stopped after Willow had spun it. Tara was spread out wide on all fours. Her legs spread from one side of the twister mat to the other. Her hands her crossed in front of her as she struggled with the laws of gravity to stay in an upright position.
Willow was in a rather tough spot herself. She was looking in the opposite direction than the blonde and her legs were delicately woven between Tara’s crossed arms and her left hand was place out next to Tara’s right foot. The positioning of where her right hand would go meant her head was in a very close proximity to the other girls nether region and the thought sent exciting shivers down Willow’s spine. The fact that both girls were wearing only a t-shirt and their underwear made Willow’s view even greater.
Willow could feel her knees getting weak, they started trembling and the fact that her hand was itching to move from it’s spot and gently caress Tara’s thigh made staying out of a heap on the floor increasingly hard. Eventually the laws of gravity prevailed and Willow and Tara fell in a great heap on the floor. Boisterous giggling followed a loud thud as uncontrollable laughter escaped from the two girl’s mouths.
It’d been Tara’s idea to play twister, with this eventually happening being all part of the major plan. She had craved Willow skin all night, she remembered back to all the Willow-skin in Hawaii and as a result major droolage often occurred. She hoped that soon this adventurous flirting would lead to something more intimate and personal. Tara longed for the moment when her lips would meet Willow’s and her tongue would brush against the firm yet soft lips, that would open ever so slightly, just enough room for her tongue to sneak in and meet in a fiery passion with Willow’s own succulent tongue.
Their laughter slowly started to subside as they managed to carefully crawl off of each other and without even realising it, their faces were inches apart. Each girl gulped as the sudden realisation of the closeness of each other and the complete intenseness surrounding the situation. The need to just kiss the lips in front of them near overpowering, in fact each girl ran their tongues across their lips to moisten them for the oncoming assault.
“Umm, t.v.” Tara pulled away at the last second and flicked on the switch, randomly choosing the first channel that came on.
“Look lions stalking their prey, how cool is that.” Tara laughed nervously and Willow could only manage a meek smile as she settled in next to the blonde. Doubts suddenly started to filter through Willow’s mind, she’d been so sure Tara was going to kiss her at that moment and it had seemed like the world had stopped. Only for the blonde to loose her nerve at the last second. Willow sighed once again, maybe the feelings she had for the blonde weren’t being reciprocated. She felt she needed to know for sure though.
Tara was staring blankly at the television now. She was sure there were pictures on it but they were just a blur as her mind raced over the feelings in her head. She tried to figure out why she pulled away. Did she still doubt Willow’s feelings for her, a fear of rejection maybe, she was trying desperately hard to figure it all out. She knew she liked the girl… a lot, so why when the opportunity had presented itself to kiss her had she backed away. These weren’t feelings you just readily accepted unless they were spot on, If there had been a single doubt as to her feelings for Willow she would’ve brought them up to herself before. No this was purely her insecurity at work here, she wanted for it to be the perfect first kiss when she kissed Willow. She didn’t want it to be something where Willow would tell her the following morning that she got caught in the moment.
“I’m gonna make a coffee, you want one?” Tara asked as she got up and moved into the kitchen.
“Sure.” Willow called back after her, her own eyes still fixed on the t.v though she wasn’t watching it. Her head was racing at a million miles an hour and she could use this short intermission to clear some things up on her head.
Willow needed to tell Tara about her feelings. She felt she couldn’t wait forever or else a moment like this may never come again. She thought that maybe the time had been in Hawaii but found now to be an even better opportunity. She just hoped that her bad luck was about to run out and that for once n her life things would run smoothly. That wasn’t asking too much now was it.
Tara brought the steaming mugs of coffee into the lounge area and handed Willow hers with a small smile. Tara herself had used the trip to the kitchen to try and build some courage and admit her feelings to Willow. They screamed out at her, her heart was yelling but some small voice in the back of her head always seemed to quieten the resounding plea of her heart. Tara decided it was time to put the annoying little voice to rest and finally listen to the words her heart was speaking.
Tara sat down beside Willow, taking a sip of her coffee and she gathered the last of her composure as she readied to tell Willow.
“I need to talk to you.” Both girls stated at exactly the same time, breaking the uneasy silence that had momentarily come over them.
“You go first, mines kinda important.” Willow implored Tara with a smile.
“Well mines doubly important, you go first.” Replied Tara, she wasn’t sure if she should just blurt it out or if the extra time to compose herself was a bonus.
“Um okay, we’ve known each other what six, seven weeks.” Stated Willow, Tara remembering Willow had began a similar speech in Hawaii. Just then the door burst open and some girl Tara had never seen before was dragging in Alex.
“Oh my god, what happened?” Tara rushed over in concern to her bloodied friend and helped lead him to the couch so he could get off his feet.
“We were walking to our hotel room, and some guys started howling and whistling at me. Alex stood up for me and well the guys didn’t take it too well and this is what happened. He mentioned he lived here, which wasn’t far from the attack, I wanted to get him off the street before I called for help.” The young distressed woman explained.
“So you’re the weekend date I gather?” Willow asked as the other girl backed of a bit concerned as Tara checked him over for broken bones.
“What no I’m Hayley, I just met Alex tonight at a club.” The slender brunette replied.
“You mean you don’t know Sam?” Tara turned around confused, as she had been eaves dropping in after she heard Willow’s question.
“I’m sorry but I don’t know a Sam.” Hayley replied with all honesty. Tara looked her bloodied friend who seemed partially out to it and had obviously not heard a word that had been said.
“We need to get him to a hospital.” Tara stated, as she wasn’t sure of anything but the fact that her friend needed medical attention.
“Do you want me to call an ambulance or are we taking a cab?” Willow asked as she moved to the phone.
“We’ll take a cab, no sense waiting for an ambulance, he should be okay he just needs to get stitched up.” Tara stated as she continued to scope out the extent of his injuries. With that Willow and Tara helped him to his feet and lead him out the door, closely followed by a concerned Hayley. Willow pondered in her head how both times she’d attempted to tell Tara her feelings that something terrible had prevented it. The feeling that it wasn’t meant to be started to sink in, it was a similar feeling that was starting to float around Tara’s head after the night's events.

Isn't it funny how you feel your most tired five minutes before you have to get up.
