Excerpt from Astinus’ Journal in the Libraries of Palanthas

It has been many years since the war between the elves and humans ended. 15 longs years. Since then, an uneasy peace has settled over Kranin. The war drums haven’t sounded a beat. Now the humans have grown haughty in their victories, the elves of Qualinost have assumed new leaders. The Qualinost have rallied all elven nations to their sides: the Silvanseti, and the Qualiseti. Humans, as dull and thick-headed as they were accused the elves of massing forces against the humans, breaking the treaty. The elves fought back and now I fear it will escalate into something terrible…again.

The drums of war fill the air once more. Blood spills on the plains of Istar and soaks into the roots of the trees of Distali Forest. The war is terrible, more so than the one before. We deserve it for ignoring the prophecies. But there is also another prophecy, fortold by the human mages of long ago. Of a human and an elf that will bring peace. Lasting peace. Such sweet words for these old ears. But then, it will be a long while before I can hear them spoken out loud.

Chapter One:The Gift

Buffy Summers, weary from her travels, sat down on a boulder that stood out from the dry grass of the plains like a sore thumb. She tossed her sword, bow, and a quiver of arrows down and stretched herself out. It had been hours patrolling along the borders of Solace for any sign of elven activity. Nothing.

She looked over at her friend, Xander Harris, who had just managed to catch up to her. “Hey, how you doing?”

“How does it look like I’m doing?” Xander managed to breathe out, panting heavily.

Buffy chuckled, smiling at her life-long friend. “Here.” She tossed him a flask of water.

Xander caught it deftly, and managed to gulp down ninety percent of the contents before tossing it back to Buffy.

“Gee…” Buffy cocked an eyebrow at the almost-empty flask. “Thanks.”

“Sorry.” Xander shrugged.

Reaching into her haversack, she drew out a loaf of bread and a slice of smoked beef. “How about lunch?” She broke off half of the bread and handed it to Xander before drawing her dagger and slicing up the beef. They sat in silence, each enjoying their meal and the beautiful day over the Plains of Istar. There wasn’t a cload in the sky, and the knee-high grass swayed this way and that as the wind commanded, it was truly a magnificent day on the Solace borders.

“I don’t know why they have us patrolling.” Buffy frowned. “No elf force would be that stupid to waste troops on a small town that’s no where near the capital. You know, we should be out there with the Draenor Army! Fighting the real fight you know?”

Xander nodded his agreement as Buffy sighed, realizing that will never happen. She gradually turned her thoughts elsewhere. “I wonder how Will’s doing.”

“Yeah, being in the Tower of Ashenvale! Wow, what I wouldn’t give to see that…”

“You can’t…unless you’re magically gifted.” Buffy smirked.

“Yeahyeah, I know. Magi School and all. But wouldn’t it be great if we could see it?”

“You can’t Xander. The tower hides itself, unless you’re magi, you can’t see it. Geez, give up already.” Buffy sighed. When will Xander ever give up. Sure it was always his dream to be a mage, a magic user, it turned out in the end it was his sister who would be chosen to travel to one of the towers of magic to apprentice in the art. Poor Xander was so disappointed, but then again so proud it was Willow who would be honored by the gift. To humans, magic in their kind was a rare thing. Unlike the elves who commonly used magic in their everyday life, magic just didn’t naturally flow in the human blood. But, those rare human mages were also incredibly powerful. Sometimes even more so than their more experienced elven teachers.

Willow had suspected elf blood somewhere far up in their family tree. Probably a great grand-parent, before the first war on the Elven Nations. Otherwise how could you explain Willow’s abilities? Not so easily if Willow was the first in her family to have the gift, that was even more rare. Possibly increasing Willow’s chances of becoming a powerful sorceress.

When she had received a letter from the Council of Magi, explaining her magical abilities, they gave her a chance to study among the most skilled of magicians. “Choose your school” they had said. “But choose wisely, for that is where you shall take your Test, if you choose, when you finish your apprenticeship. The Test was a greatly feared subject among the students of magic. It was demanding, harsh, and unforgiving. Given to students of the Towers, if one shall pass, they are given the title of a true Mage, and graduate with high honors. Most do not make it out without serious injury, half die in the process. The Test was designed to separate the strong from the weak. But not only in magic skills, but also in the mind, heart, and body. If one were to be the best student in the Tower, the strongest of them all, but then had a flaw in their being, they will most certainly die in the Test. Magic was a thing for only the most talented, strong, and good-minded of people. The otherwise had to be rooted out and destroyed. The gift shall only pass on in the good intended. Who knows what could happen if the most powerful of arts were to fall into the wrong hands.

Willow had chosen the Tower of Ashenvale, the tower of the elves, over the Tower of Azeroth, the tower of barbarians, and necromancers. The barbarians and necromancers were all human…sort of. Part human and part something else. Barbarians clamed to have dragon ancestors, while the necromancers claimed to be part griffon. Which would explain why they could channel magic so easily, but dragons haven’t been seen on the face of Kranin for thousands of years and the only beings who had contacts with griffons were the elves.

Xander and Buffy protested furiously at Willow’s choice. She would be entering enemy territory, but once Willow’s mind was set, you had a better chance of moving a mountain than changing her mind. Besides, the elves wouldn’t harm a hair on her head. It didn’t matter who you were, human, elf, or ogre. If you were there to study magic, the teachers would treat a non-elven just the same as the elven students. United by magic, the mages held a deep respect for each other including the apprentices, ignoring the Human Elven Wars. Anyone showing even a tinge of racism was expelled from the towers. Which was good partly for Willow.

So Willow was allowed access into the school. But there was another thing looming ahead for the young witch. The Test. Elven magic was considerable more powerful than the barbarians’ or the necromancers’. But many have avoided the Tower of Ashenvale because non-elvens were not meant to channel elven magic. So many thought as they entered the opposite tower.

So Willow would be the first human to ever take on the Elven Test, if she chose. As powerful as elf magics were, than the half-human’s, so was their Test. Ashenvale’s Test was said to be twice as hard as Azeroth’s. Over ¾ of Ashenvale’s students failed and were killed. And these were elves, what are the chances for a human?

“I wonder what Will’s doing…” Buffy said again.

Willow flipped through her book, studying the incantation for her fire spell. Her quiz on summoning the four elements was next week and she could barely get her water spell down. Fire was considerably harder to control since it burned and consumed everything in its reach. Earth wasn’t that bad; she just had to mold it into the shape she wanted and that’s it! Air was unpredictable, coming in anytime it wanted to, just like fire.

Absently, she picked at her red robes of neutrality. All students were to pick which side of the magical spectrum they would learn. White magic, black magic, or study both in balance. They were given robes corresponding to the subjects they were learning. White for white, black for black, red for neutrality. The Tower of Ashenvale was all composed of white with Willow the only red. It was forbidden for any elf to learn the black magics. To break this law was to banish yourself from society and your homeland.

So Willow had found herself without a teacher, as there was no elf in Ashenvale who knew the dark arts. They had to call in another mage from Azeroth Tower, an necromancer named Dalamar, to teach her the black arts while a regular instructor taught her white. What struck Willow was that Dalamar was elvish. He was banished from his home of Silvaseti as he took up the black robes. Dalamar was branded a Dark Elf. He went to the Tower of Azeroth and there he studied under the most infamous of Necromancers, Raistlin, before the Mage Council decided to admit Dalamar to learn elvish black magic and he was allowed entry to Ashenvale to revitalize the dead art of Elvish Black.

She closed her book and looked around the library. It was nearly empty except her and an elven girl who sat in the far corner reading a spell book bound in blue and silver. But then again, they were all elven. Tarathalas, Willow thought. Yeah that’s her name. Top in the class too.

The redhead wondered idly if she would bother helping her with her spellwork. Tarathalas was already summoning elementals rather than mere elements. She was obviously Silvanseti. The markings she bore on her face clearly read Night Elf. Two deep blue stripes across her cheek and down her neck, pronouncing her from her Qualinost cousins, of red, and the Qualiseti of green. Each elf was tattooed on their thirteenth birthday, their design corresponding to their nation and their clan.

Willow got up and walked over to the girl, her boots hitting the stone floor rhythmically. The elf, sensing her presence immediately, looked up with nervous eyes.

“Hi!” Willow greeted cheerily.

“H-Hi.” Tarathalas looked down hastily, her long blonde hair covering her eyes. “D-Do you w-want me to m-move?”

“What? Move? Oh no!” Willow shook her head, and chuckled uneasily. “Tarathalas, right?”

The Silvaseti nodded, still awfully interested in her lap. “Y-You can call me T-Tara. It’s my h-human n-n-name.”

That piqued Willow’s interest. “You have a human name?”

“I h-have a human u-uncle. He gave it to m-me.”

“Oh, well um. I was wondering if you could help me with my element summoning. Quiz next week you know.” Willow asked. Cleary she wasn’t the only nervous one in the conversation.

“Oh! Y-yeah, I can do that. W-When?”

“Uh, how about after the courtyard, after dinner?”

“S-Sure.”

Willow smiled and nodded. “Ok then. Bye!” She waved and ran out of the library’s double doors, grabbing her book on the way, thinking ‘Alright! I got a study date with the hottest-Wait, what am I saying?!’

She screeched to a halt in the middle of the school corridor. ‘Am I gay? No way I can be…what about Oz?”

Oz, a barbarian of the Malidor Tribe that inhabited the Plains of Istar, who came to visit her in Solace every once in a while. His hard muscular body, his lips on hers…Tara’s soft curves. NO! No no no! Think Oz! Yes, Oz… His short spiky hair, his strong arms and chest…Tara’s yummy chest. Argh! Nono! Wrong! Wrong!

Willow slammed her book into her forehead over and over as she climbed the stairs that spiraled up and up, leading into the dormitories. A group of students passing her, on the way down into the main hall, stopped for a moment to stare at the strange human who was in the process of a bizarre ritual of inflicting terrible pain upon herself.

The elves sighed and shook their heads. Humans!

Willow finally made it into the room she resided in. Throwing the book onto her desk, she flopped down on her bed. Grabbing her pillow, she put it against her face and screamed out all her frustration. This is NOT happening! She put the pillow aside and rolled over to stare at the ceiling. Blowing away a lock of hair that had fallen over her face, she wished Buffy were here to straighten things out for her. She could always count on her best friend. “I cannot be in love with a girl. An ELF girl!”

“What’s wrong with us?”

Willow nearly fell off her bed at the voice. She looked over and glared at her roomate who was sitting on her bed studying a book. “Don’t DO THAT!”

Dawlathar shrugged her apologies, but then repeated. “What’s wrong with elf girls?”

“I can’t fall in love with girls that’s what!” Willow replied but then grabbed her head in her hands, as if she were having a migrane. “You’re too young to understand, Dawn.” She used the nickname she gave for her roomate becase frankly, she was never good with elven names.

“I’ll have you know I’m sixteen!” Dawn sniffed. She muttered something in her Silvanseti tongue and went back to reading her book. “Besides, I don’t think it’s wrong…My sister’s like that you know. She’s actually really happy.”

“Really?” Willow squeaked, looking up.

“Yeah, no one really cares. We’re not like you humans who fuss over every little thing.” Dawn said absently, flipping a page over. She scratched at her tatoo that went across her face and looked over at Willow. “Who is it?”

Willow opened her mouth in horror at the question but then became annoyed. “No one.” She rolled over and glared at the wall.

“Riiight. Well if it doesn’t work out, maybe I can hook you up with my sister.”

“Whatever.”

Dawn smiled. Her roomate was so fun to play with, Willow reacted so easily to teasing! Not like that Anyanka person, her previous roomate, who took everything way too seriously.Qualinost elves were way too much like humans.

Looking out the window and into the horizon, Dawn realized they had a few minutes until the dinner bell rang. She reached over to her side of the table and felt around until her fingers came to a rest on a deck of cards Willow had brought from her village. It was a human thing so at first Dawn didn’t know what the heck it was; until Willow had taught her some games and now it was an evening ritual that she and Willow passed the time with a game of cards.

She divided the deck into two piles and started shuffling like Willow had taught her. Willow, hearing the slapping of the cards, got off the bed and went over to Dawn’s.

“Deal.” She said simply, sitting down beside the Silvanseti. She needed to get her mind off this stupid “Tara Business”.

“Poker.” Dawn replied. And starting dealing cards.

Two minutes into the game, the stakes were high. Willow had bet a few steel coins and Dawn two. One piece alone could’ve bought a horse at the market in Draenor. But they didn’t mind, over the months they have grown close and they were practically best friends despite the age difference. They could borrow money from each other whenever.

“Call it.” Dawn said finally.

Willow put down a royal flush, a big fat smile slapped across her face. Dawn blushed and was attempting to hide her cards, but Willow wouldn’t have any of that. She grabbed Dawn’s cards and her eyes widened, then went narrow with fury.

“ROYAL FLUSH?! DAWN!!!” She screamed in anger.

“Wha-at? You think I cheated?” Dawn said innocently, though was swiping the steel coins when she thought Willow wasn’t looking.

“That’s exactly what you did! C’mere you little rogue!”

“AAAAAAAAAAH!!!”

“Now this is the main hall. Where all the students have their meals.” The head mage said to the new students as he showed them around. “As you know, the school, I assume, is a very different environment for most of you. There are some things that will seem very strange-“

As if on cue, Dawn and Willow shot by the head mage and the group of students, Dawn screaming at the top of her lungs.

“AAAAAAAAAAH! SOMEONE HELP ME!!!” Dawn yelled in desperation. Not far behind, Willow was hard on her heels wielding a very threatening looking chamber pot.

“YOU LITTLE THIEF! COME BACK HERE SO I CAN HIT YOU!”

The group stared at the retreating figures as they rounded the corner of the corridor and disappeared, their shrill voices still echoing among the halls. They looked at each other and blinked.

“Um-moving on…”

Tara grabbed her food tray and made her way out to the south courtyard, where she always ate her meals. Always out in the open. Though the mage school was designed by elf hands, to have as little walls as possible, Tara loved the outside just as much as any elf.

The tower was made of pristine milk white crystal, and rather mar the forest landscape, it complemented it. It rose from the forest landscape like a slender spindle reaching for the sky. Designed by elves and crafted dwarves, it looked so delicate that one might think if the wind blew, the tower would crumble. However it was so strong it could hold the weight of an entire army.

She sat herself down on the edge of the water fountain that was nestled in the middle of the gardens. Nibbling on a piece of bread she looked up into the night sky and smiled. How she loved the moon in all its radiant splendor! And the night with it’s blanketing darkness, obscuring the truth with mystery! The Silvanseti were not called the Night Elves for nothing!

She was sipping at her soup when the falcon came. Seeing the flying bird, Tara put down her bowl, wiped a napkin at her lips, before stretching her arm out. The bird obediently landed on her arm and started pecking at her head.

Tara laughed at the falcon’s antics. “Nan pah, Beren!” She said gently in her Silvanseti dialect. “Quesif.” Telling the bird to hold still, she untied the thin paper that was held by flax cord to the bird’s foot.

Setting the bird on one of the branches that hung low over the fountain, she fed it a bit of meat from her stew before sitting down to read her letter.

Dear Tarathalas,

I hope you can read my writing. Giles is trying to make me practice my handwriting. But you know how hard it is to write with your left eye missing. How is your studying? I bet you’re the stop in the school. Am I right? Of course I am. I’m always right. When will you be coming home? We miss you, you know? G-man’s getting twitchy. I guess it’s because you’re not here to stop me from picking on him! Haha! How’s the shrimp? Is she still bugging people as always? We were hoping the studying would make her less…hyperactive. Guess we’re wrong huh? But oh well, we can wish. Write you again soon.

Your friends back home,

Faithasala and G-man

PS. Don’t feed Beren anymore beef! He knows you love to spoil him and is fat enough as it is!

“Oops!” Tara giggled, it sounded like Faith was her usual self of telling her not to be so nice. She went over to the falcon whispered. “It’ll be our little secret…but I do suppose I spoil you.” Rubbing his neck-feathers, she reached into her robe pocket and drew out an already written reply.

Tying the letter to the bird’s foot with the cord, she held her arm out and the falcon climbed on board readily. “Bye, see you later Beren! Queva!” Launching the bird into the sky, it was gone in a gust of wind. Watching as the bird disappeared against the night sky, she turned around to leave, but came face to face with…

“Willow…”

Ok, I’m just posting this to see if this is worth writing. Depends if this is good writing or not. The fate of this fic rests in your hands.

LiangFeng,

I just wanted to let you know I read some of your stuff over on fanfiction.net and loved it. I never posted fedback there though. Bad me.

Anyway, can I just tell you how much this fic KICKS ASS!!!! I'm more familiar with the Forgotten Realms setting than Dragonlance, so I'm all clunky with the elven tribal names, but as a gamer I am kinda familiar with it. I love elves, and I gotta say Tara makes a perfect elf. I can't wait for more!

~Joy

Did I mention I LOVE ELVES? Okay. Just checking.

IttyBittyKitty: "creme filled though...a little subtle there?"
TwiLightJoy: "There are reasons for everything, I tell ya! Chocolate-frosted reasons!"
IttyBittyKitty: "that is quite enough of YOUR sass!"

He he i played a few of the earlier Might & Magics. I love Tara as an elf and would i be right in picking that Tara is Dawn's sister in this fic. I love the aspect of having them in a fantasy world where elves and humans reign. I eagerly await an update so please don't disappoint :)

Cheers

I knew this scenerio sounded familar. I use to work in a gaming store, though I never actually played, well outside of work, anyway. Definitely looking forward to more.

Oh my goddess! Why didn't I think of a crossover with DragonLance??? It's brilliant! Willow as a mage, Tara as an elf... now all I need is Kitiara to come into the story and I'll be in paradise! :drool

The story is very well written and you'd better continue with it or I'll have Khellendros track you down! ;)

“Hi!” Willow waved and smiled. In her arms, two books of spells, one of which she had been reading when she saw Tara in the library. “I-um…not interrupting anything?” She asked.

“O-Oh, that.” Tara shook her head. “Just sending a letter to my f-friend.”

“Back in Silvanseti?” Willow down on the fountain edge, just where Tara had been, and set her books down.

“Yeah.” Tara nodded, walking over to what remained of her dinner. She waved her hand over the mess and in an instantly, the plates and bowls were gone. Sitting down next to Willow, she reached into her pocket to draw out two white crystals. “Shirak.” The crystals lit

up in her hand, providing the sufficient light for them to read the spells. Handing one to Willow, she took a red bound book and placed it in her lap to begin flipping through.

Willow’s heart hammered against her rib cage. Here was the most beautiful girl in the entire world! Screw Oz! I’m gay! Willow was mesmerized at how wonderful Tara looked in the moonlight. Her eyes glowed a brilliant azure, something it obviously could not do in

sunlight. Tara’s long blonder hai, that seemed to fall flawlessly about her shoulders, beckoned for Willow’s touch. How she would love to run her fingers through Tara’s soft, velvety hair. Her lips. Oh gods, Tara’s lips! So full, so…well, kissable. Willow wondered what it would be like to kiss Tara's lips. She wondered what it would be like to place gentle kisses down her slender neck.

But most of all she thought how Tara’s body would feel against her own; her vopulous breasts, against her own small ones. The curvy body…arms embracing her…the sweetness of her mouth…

Willow was soon aware of the fire raging between her legs. And also the voice talking to her. “What?” Willow snapped out of her most delicious fantasy to see

Tara’s worried eyes staring into her own.

“I said, which ones are you having trouble on?” Tara asked again. “Are you ok?” Her voice full of worry, her brow knit together with concern.

“What? Me! Oh I’m fine!” Willow said hastily. “I’m finey Mcfine! I’m good! Oh so good! I couldn’t be anymore good! There is no need to worry! No siree! Worry is a waste on me! It’s bad for you; all that stress and stuff. It would make me feel bad and give you gray hairs

and that wouldn’t be good.” Willow stopped and thought for a minute. “Wait. Elves don’t get grays hairs do they?”

Tara giggled at Willow’s babbling. The redhead, a bit confused, looked over at Tara who waved it off.

“Oh I’m sorry it’s just that you're babbling…”

“It’s stupid? Driving you insane? Totally dumb?” Willow was about to go on but was silenced by an amused look from Tara.

“I was going to say cute.” Tara gave a full-blown smile to Willow, who, frankly, thought it was the most lovely thing ever besides Tara herself. Willow felt her knees turn to jelly and thanked the gods she was sitting down.

“So what are you having trouble on?” Tara repeated for the third time, looking down at the open book.

“Oh, the fire and wind one.” Willow flipped a couple of pages, letting her fingers brush Tara’s hand every so often, feeling the electricity flow through them; she wondered if Tara could feel it too.

Tara meanwhile, had her eyes glued to Willow, her redhaired goddess. Electricity tingled on her fingertips as Willow occasionally accidently, or so she thought, brushed them with her own. In that instant, Tarathalas of the Silvaseti, fell hard face-first in love with Willow Rosenburg. She could’ve watched Willow all day, nothing in the world could match Willow’s beauty and essence. Willow became her world, and everything in it.

“Oh that’s easy.” The Elven girl said as she saw the spell. “See, there’s a trick to elements.” Tara shut the book and placed it aside. Taking Willow’s wrist, she stood up and took Willow along with her until they were a few feet away from the stone fountain they had been sitting on.

Standing behind Willow, she took her hands within hers and guided her through the summoning patterns. “See it’s how you keep your hands, the magic has to flow through them in the proper form. Like water in a river. Everything needs precision. Otherwise the magic will overflow and become useless.”

Willow was just as aware of Tara’s breasts pressing against her back, as of the growing wetness in her nether reigons.

Her breathing coming in short pants, a blush rising to her cheeks, Willow felt like she was going to either pass out or die. She felt Tara’s hot breath on her ear as she whispered words of advice. Oh the torture! How could she be so close and not kiss her? Oh my Gods! I HAVE to get out of here! Think of an excuse! Um………uh………BRAIN IS NOT WORKING!!!

The burst of fire that exploded from both their hands surprised both girls as the immense fireball shot up into the sky, sending the frightened Willow backwards. Knocking into Tara, she nearly sent both of them on their backs had it not been for Tara who managed to

catch ahold of Willow

Both were soon very aware of their awkward position. Tara stood with her arms across Willow’s stomach, and the redhead leaning into her. Willow was barely balanced on the balls of her heels, hands on Tara’s strong supporting arms, looking into the blonde’s eyes.

Somewhere above their heads, the floating fireball exploded, sending a great spectacular show of fireworks into the night sky.

Staring into each other’s faces, they couldn’t help but notice once again how wonderful the other was. Willow swallowed hard, unable to tear herself from Tara’s gaze.

Tara knew she was supposed to set Willow down but found that totally impossible. Her body wouldn’t listen to her brain!

“You’re beautiful.” The words came from Tara’s mouth and she mentally slapped herself. Stupid! Stupid! Now you’ve done it! She’s gonna think you’re a freak! She’s never gonna talk to you again.

Willow was in heaven! Tara had called her beautiful! No one had ever done that…not even Oz.

She slowly found herself drawing closer to Tara, tilting her head, her eyes fluttered shut. Tara slowly brought one hand up to cup Willow’s face as their lips slowly drew together.

“HI WILLOW!!!”

The two girls tried to jump apart but from their standing point, they found it impossible to do so. They both collapsed on top of each other.

“DAWN!” Willow snapped from underneath Tara’s leg.

“Dawlathar eishtei shirhaku!” Tara shouted at the younger girl, clearly knowing the younger elf.

Dawn raised and eyebrow at the two girls tangled together. She seemed to consider what Tara said before replying. “Semak sostei lukarth.”

Tara blushed furiously, much to Dawn’s amusement, who laughed loudly. Willow looked from Tara to Dawn and realized for the first time that their tattoos were incredibly similar. Though the color of Tara’s was deep and bold and Dawn’s was a lighter with a band

across her forehead, their tribal design were exactly the same.

“You’re sisters.” Willow said matter-of-factly.

“Du-uh!” Dawn said, switching to Common speech, still laughing. Walking over to them, she helped Tara off Willow before nudging her sister in the ribs. “She’s a cutie, Tare!”

Tara blushed even deeper, if it were possible. “Dawnie, w-we weren’t doing a-anythin-“

“My own roommate too!” Dawn grinned. “And Tara scores again! My sister is so cool!”

Tara stared in surprise at Willow, who was also taken by the new discovery. Dawn seemed to ignore their shock and was still bouncing happily on her heels.

“Wow, you guys together! How romantic!” Dawn squealed with joy.

“Dawn we weren’t-!”

“It wasn’t what it looked-!”

However the elf youth would have none of that. “I’ll leave you guys to your make-out session. Sorry about before!” She took off running, waving as she left. “I’ll see you guys later!”

“No, Dawn!” Tara called, trying to call her sister back.

“Don’t go!” Willow screamed, not wanting to face the inevitable awkward silence that would follow. But they were too late, Dawn had disappeared.

For a few seconds, they were awfully interested in their feet. One would look up for a while, only to have the other look back and then they would return their gazes to their boots once more.

“So um…” Willow started but couldn’t find anything to say. She sighed miserably at her lack of creativity.

“Yeah.” Tara finished for her.

“I’m sorry about that.” Tara walked to the stone fountain to pick up her still-glowing crystal. With a few uttered words, their light faded away. Slipping them into the inside pocket of her robes, she started off down the stone path that led from the gardens back to the tower.

“I hope you do ok on your quiz.” Were her goodbye words as she too melted away into the night.

Willow was left alone to the mercy of her thoughts. What the hell was she thinking? That Tara could ever go for a human like her! Huh. What kind of fool would hook up with Willow plain ol’ Rosenburg? Stupid! You always screw things up! That’s all you’re ever good for!

Bitterly, she snatched up her books and follow down the path to the school.

Willow woke up to sunrays stinging her eyes. Angrily, she pulled the covers over her eyes to shield them from the burning sun. Groaning, she rolled over and buried her head under the pillow. She hated being woken up like this. Memories from the night before rushed back into

her head and she groaned even louder at her stupidity.

“Hey, you ok?” She heard Dawn’s voice asking, sounding a bit worried.

“I’m fine.” She mumbled, stubbornly refusing to not wake up. Not like this. She couldn’t start her day like this. There was no way she could face her quiz with-HER QUIZ!

Bolting up straight with such suddenness, she nearly startled Dawn to fall off her bed. “What time is it?!” She barked to the younger.

“Relax, you got plenty of time before your elements test.” Dawn replied, as if reading her mind. “Porthios’ tests are always easy, so I’ve heard. Besides, didn’t Tara give you a bit of help?” She smirked, raising her eyebrows at Willow.

Willow remembered with a terrible feel of agitation that Tara had not taught her how to summon air. “It wasn’t what it looked like, Dawn.” She rubbed her temples to relieve a bit of the tension that grew there. “There’s nothing between us.”

As the words fully sank into Dawn’s mind, she bent her head in disappointment. “Oh.” The happy glint in her eyes noticeably died away. She had been so happy before, seeing Tara and Willow together. It was that back home, Tara was always so quiet, never talking to any of the girls; she’d thought that when they moved into the Tower, that would all change, because here was where Tara is most comfortable., and didn’t have to be so shy. Among the magics and mages, here is where Tara is in her element.

Willow noticed Dawn’s sinking mood. “It’s complicated.” She said, as if offering consolation.

“So you do like her!” Dawn cried, happy once again of her new find. When Willow didn’t reply, Dawn took this as if Willow had agreed to revelation. “Whoo hoo!” She yelled.

Willow winced, she was sure that Dawn had woken up whoever was still in bed. “Ssssssh!” She hissed. “It’s not breakfast yet but it’s still early!”

Dawn ignored Willow’s pleas of silence. “Tell her!”

Willow blinked. “Dawn! I don’t-“

“She likes you! Trust me! Ok?” Dawn reassured.

Willow was about to protest, saying that Dawn didn’t have to say that to make her feel better, that she herself wasn’t so sure. But that would be lying. Besides, what did she have to lose? Her heart. But instead she said. “Ok.”

This part sucked. All that homework is killing me, I'm sorry. I'm up until 4 doing homework, what a nice excuse, huh? Next part will be BIGGER and MUCH BETTER!

All right, IMHO, this part didn't suck. You're building towards something and all that. Plus, we had some nice Willow and Tara interaction. Plus Dawn is adorably hyper in this fic. Looking forward to more.

This part most definetely did not suck. What with the almost kissing and the huge fireworks display, very cool. I love this little universe you are crafting and while I haven't played many games, mostly due to lack of time, I've always loved these fairy tale type stories. Warriors, mages, elves, and dragons..these are the things that I love and to have Willow and Tara there too....well it makes it seem like its my birthday or something. So thanks, and please don't stop writing.

You should have a little more confidence in your writing... heck, you should have a LOT more confidence because it's brilliant! I love the interaction between Willow and Tara and some parts even had me laughing out loud. Thank the goddess no one was around to hear me or they would have thought I was mad.

Please please please continue quickly... I need my fix of Might & Magic! :D

i have no idea what games y'all are talking about but i like this story. it took a few moments to flwo into it and understand the whole background to this. it's really interesting to see them out of the typical buffyverse AU, like MC's Stone's Circle. i'm interested in everything going on so far, i like willow being xander's sibling and my mum always said Dawn looked more like Tara's sister than Buffy's. Willow being the only human there and the prophecy speaking of a human and elvin (is that the word?). good luck with your homework and dont worry about us, we'll still be here when you update. hugs

"She has magic fingers." Then, as though the words had just echoed back to her and sounded not at all right, she perked up and glanced around at the others. "On the keyboard." Tara, The Wisdom Of War...

Postby TwiLightJoy » Thu Jul 25, 2002 7:46 pm

Rane - it can be spelled either Elvin or Elven. I tend to prefer Elven, though my friend (my former DM) prefers Elvin. I am also one of the capitol letter people with them, um, coz in Forgotten Realms that's how it usually works. I'm like, elf-a-holic girl ... :) and yes, I LOVED this chapter, and I will add that I was laughing out loud, as well. The fireball was awesome, and I loved Dawn. More as soon as possible! But not to rush you coz, you know, quality.... Okay now I'm really gonna go finish my update! ;)

Thanks you guys for reading! You guys really give me an ego boost. At first I wasn't so sure about posting on the Kitten Board since everything seems so...well...intimidating. Well I guess this is what I get for having my whole fanfic career on the Fanfiction.Net. But you guys are so nice! Love you all! I'll have the chapter three up by next week!

Chapter 3A: Winds of Silvaseti

Author: LiangFeng

Beta-Reader: Kooritenshi

No more classes! Whoo hoo! More sleep for me and more updates for you!

Disclaimer: I hate putting up these things, they’re useless! Who wants to sue a thirteen year-old?!

Feedback: Want more! Pleeeaaaase? I pay you? Oh no, that’s just wrong.

Willow ran as hard as she could down the hallways of the Tower’s south wing. Gods, she’s spent so much time talking which Dawn that she’d lost track of time. Her class was in a few minutes and she she hadn’t even got the wind spell down. Geez, what was she going to do? Wing it, she supposed.

She finally arrived at her destination. Straightening out her robes, and collecting herself, she entered the chamber. It was a relatively large room; it was constructed in a circular pattern so the instructor could keep his eye on every student fairly easily. All around the room, hanging from the walls were torches, and spaced in between each of the torches was a chair where a student would sit. There were approximately thirty students. The instructor sat directly across the double doors that lead into the hallways, on the far wall, where he could see each person entering. Including Willow.

“Barely made it Rosenburg!” Porthios snapped at the girl.

“Sorry.” Willow bowed her head to the archmage. And made her way to her seat in the western wall, more noticeable since the room was made of white marble with elves in white robes and her in scarlet! Each student sat accordingly to rank. The lowest sat flanking the doors, the most advanced, on either side of the teacher. Which meant that Willow was average of the entire class. Tara sat on Porthios’ right hand. On his left was Qualiseti girl Willow called Amy.

Willow kept her eyes on Tara, hoping to catch the other’s gaze but found she could not. Tara kept her head down, staring intensely at her lap.

“The Test,” All students immediately woke up from whatever morning drowsiness they had before, and were all scared stiff from the words. The Test was not a mere subject of conversation on the tower’s courtyards. It was whispered of. There were stories of how even the greatest mages of all time were driven insane by the gruesome Test. The Test was different for each magic practitioner, never the same. Because it looked into the minds of the student, grabs hold of their worst fear, and brings it to life.

Porthios smirked and waited for the hissing whispers among the students to die down before continuing. “The Test, for some of you, is within the next two moons. And for me to see find those who are eligible for the Test…I must see how each of you do on your summoning, casting, and enchanting.”

All apprentices looked among each other, uncomfortably. Most were filled with uneasiness and fear. This was one of the most nerve-racking moments in any a mage’s life. To see if one was worthy for the Test.

“For some of you, it will be easy.” He looked to his most prized pupils, Tara and Amy. Amy, who grinned proudly and held her head high, while Tara looked up for a second, blushed and gave a half-smile, before looking back down again.

“For others it may not be so.” He glared at Willow who in turn pretended not to hear. This seemed to tick him off even more.

“Rosenburg!” He barked.

Willow stood up from her chair, as was customary when address by a superior.

“Get over here and show us what you got!” He pointed toward the center of the room. Willow nodded, and grabbed the thick book, which she had rested beside her chair. Walking to the room’s center, and of everyone’s attention, it seemed to take forever. She could feel Tara’s eyes on her so she tried her best to be confident and psyche herself up. “C’mon Will, you can do it! Yeah, it’ll be easy for you. You were the top student in school back home, remember? It doesn’t matter you don’t know how to do the air spell and will probably fail and make yourself look like such a loser in front of everyone and Tara…”

She hefted the heavy book into the crook of her arm and flipped over to the book marked page. Sliding it into her left hand, she held her right hand out, palm facing the ground and spoke the words of invocation. “Di rosoke datale!” Enormous crags of stone shot up from the underneath the titles of marble, shattering the floor and surrounding Willow within a fortress of rock ten feet high. Everyone thanked the God’s the roof of the chamber was dome shaped.

Clapping the book shut, Willow looked at the work of her art and smiled approvingly, this one was the best one yet! She glanced over at Tara from between the cracks of the stone cairns and was pleased to see she had a rather impressed look upon her face. Alright! Score one for the Willster! Willow almost giggled as her mind briefly channeled Xander.

“Good.” Porthios nodded. With a wave of hit hand, the towers crumbled and sank back into the ground in which they came from and the tiles neatly restored themselves back to their former beauty. “Now another.”

Willow was slightly disappointed that Porthios had dispelled her work so easily but then again, she was a mere apprentice to his archmage.

“Try air.”

Uh-oh!

“I would love to see you do that!” Porthios snickered as if knowing Willow still didn’t know how to summon air.

“Um-okay.” Willow gingerly set up her hands, as Tara had taught her the night before, fingers spread open but curved. She looked up at the blonde who hunched forward with her hands folded, resting against her chin. Tara’s forehead was furrowed, staring intently at Willow, as if willing her to do it correctly.

Then suddenly, a gentle breeze swept through the room through the windows. It carried a sense of peace, subtle but there. The doors were slammed open by the soft wind, carrying in red rose petals and leaves from the outside gardens. Whirling around room, it touched contact with Willow, swirling the mass of leaves and flowers petals around her body.

Willow was shocked. How could she do this? Slowly, as if afraid to break the spell, Willow reached her hand out, brushing it against the air currents rising from the ground.

Everyone in the room was stunned silent at the simple display of magic. But suddenly the wind ceased and the foliage dropped to Willow’s feet.

Porthios was in shock. He knew how much trouble Willow had with summoning and controlling air, let alone invoke a Wind of Tranquility. The spell was awfully advanced and had a huge mana consumption. Willow looked barely fazed! She couldn’t to do that so easily…Unless. He looked over at Amy who just asked,

“What?”

He then turned his glance over to Tara who ducked her head and stuttered.

“Y-yes, s-sir?”

Narrowing his eyes at the blonde, he seemed to consider her for a moment before waving it off. “Nothing.” He turned to Willow, who was still standing before him. “You’re done, human.”

Willow nodded and walked back to her seat, relieved and yet wondering how she was able to cast that spell. She sat down hard in her chair and let the book slide out of her hands and onto the floor.

“Now that Rosenburg has summoned a Wind of Tranquility, no one will be able to cast magic in this room for twenty-hour hours. I’ll be working to cancel the spells powers but for now you’re are all dismissed.”

All of the students seemed fairly relieved that that they had whole day to study their spells. Gathering each of their belongings, they proceeded to leave the room.

‘Wind of Tranquility, is that what they call it?’ Willow thought. ‘Must be terribly advanced if it were to dispel all magic in the room for a day!’

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Tara walking as fast as she could, trying to get out of the room ‘Oh no missy! You’re not getting away from me that easily!’ She picked up her book and ran to catch up with Tara.

Tara in the meanwhile was trying to get out of the room before anyone found out it was she who casted the spell to help Willow. Finally slipping into the hallway, she started in the direction of her dorm.

“Tara!”

Too late! Tara stopped and braced herself for what to come. So close but yet so far…

Willow ran over to Tara, a big grin on her face. Throwing her arms around the other girl, she hugged her tightly. She had no idea what possessed her to do such a thing but there she was, hugging the most beautiful woman in the entire world.

Tara meanwhile went stiff as a ramrod her eyes wide open in shock; Willow was hugging her! Now she knew she must’ve died and gone to Heaven! ‘Elune has not forsaken me yet!’ Tara silently thanking the moon goddess.

Willow felt Tara stiffen in her arms and pulled back abruptly, a smile of apology on her lips. Both ached at the lost of contact, wishing to be in the embrace once more.

“That was for uh…” Willow laughed nervously, waving her hand at the classroom door behind her. “Thanks for the help back there.”

“H-How did you k-know?” Tara inquired, interested in knowing what tipped her off.

“When the wind came in.” Willow said. “You looking really intense, like you were concentrated on casting.”

“Or I could just have been looking at you.” Tara slapped herself inwardly. ‘Good job, Moonsinger! Way to flirt with the girls!’ But to her surprise, Willow smiled. The night elf smiled back and the two headed off down the corridors.

“So where are you headed?” Willow asked.

“Maybe early lunch so I can get to the library.”

“What a coincidence! Me too!”

With that, they walked into the tower’s main buildings, their conversation echoing along the stone chambers. As they walked, their bodies involuntarily drew together, their arms barely grazing. People walking by could have easily assumed they had been friends their whole life, their chatting so casual it was like they felt naturally comfortable around each other. Looked like the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

“You’re taking the Test?!” Willow’s eyes went wide, her jaw dropping.

Tara nodded, her hands idly playing with the hem of her robe. They were in a great clearing just outside the Tower’s boundaries in a wide spanning grass field. Tara laid on her back, looking toward the blue sky, with Willow sitting just above her.

“Oh wow! When?” Willow’s voice full of awe.

“U-Um, I think n-n-next moon.”

“But aren’t you the least bit afraid?” Willow went on. Her eyes willed with wonderment tinged with worry. “I mean, there’s all these stories about people not making it! What if you get hurt? Or worse! What if you don’t…”She saw Tara’s face fall and immediately regretted her words. “Oh no! I didn’t mean it like that! It’s just…I’m worried for you.” She added quietly.

Tara gave Willow a half-smile, totally melting the human’s heart. “You don’t have to worry about me.” She reached for Willow’s hand as if on impulse, trying to reassure her. But the mid-way, she realized what she was doing and pulled back.

However, Willow already caught what the blonde’s straying hand had been up to and reached forward to grasp the elf’s hand herself. “I guess I just can’t help myself.” She smiled, rubbing her thumb against the back of Tara’s hand.

They sat silent for a few moments, looking into each other’s eyes and the souls that dwelled underneath. And it was then that Willow realized how alike she and Tara were. They were surrounded by people, but were so lonely and awkward.

“I w-want to show you something.” Tara said suddenly. As she withdrew her hand, Willow barely caught the whimper of frustration that nearly escaped her throat. Sitting up, the blonde folded her legs into a lotus position, resting her hands on her knees. The redhead, wondering for a moment what the elf was doing, was surprised to see a little ball of light appear in front of Tara’s face. It could have been easily mistaken for a firefly but it was clearly luminating an incredibly sharp blue light, despite the fact that the sun was shining above their heads.

Tara’s eyes snapped open. “Willow.” She whispered, speaking to the light. The little shining dot bobbed around for a few seconds before flying over to Willow, and float around her head.

The human giggled, and reached out a finger to touch the light. As soon as it brushed itself against her finger, the light rushed back to Tara, seemingly extra shiny as if happy to complete its task. Tara nodded and the light whirled around, held still and disappeared.

“Wow.” Willow breathed.

“My mother t-taught it to me.” Tara explained. “I-I-It’s a spell made so t-that we can never lose each o-other.”

“I don’t need a spell.” Willow smiled, letting all her deep hidden love some through. “I will always find you.”

Chapter centered on Faith, a little is shown about Dawn and Tara’s past.

Silvaseti Borders

Faith Shadowsong sat beside the fire on a stone boulder, sharpening her dual Moon Blades. A fish speared on a spit was roasting on the flame. Dropping the sharpening stone, she wet her thumb before probing the swords’ edges. Aligning her only eye along the blade’s edge, she tested it for straightness. Her right eye had been the price for her right to hold the title of Demon Hunter. Although blind, she received the gift of “spectral sight” that enabled her to see her undead enemies with clarity. Being a Demon Hunter was not an honor though. It was her heritage. Hunters were shunned by the greater Night Elf society for, long ago, making a pact to protect Silvaseti from the forces of chaos, using its own terrible powers against it. Though thrown out of society they were allowed to remain inside the country for long as they kept the promise to protect Silvaseti.

Her swords, Moon Blades, as the Hunters called them were great swords forged of an unknown metal only found on Thanet Mountain. The blades were curved into the form of a crescent moon, imbued with demonic powers, and had the owner’s family tattoo base design etched into the flat of the sword. The handle of the sword was in the center, where the blade’s curve would drop suddenly and hollow out a grip for the hand.

Faith gave one an expert twirl before regarding it with a judgmental eye. She hefted the other in her left hand and looked from one to the other. Deciding she was done with her work, she placed them back in their respective leather carrying thongs, as there was no way to fashion a sheathe for the uniquely shaped swords.

She then reached for her dinner that was still hung over the flames. Prodding it with a wary finger, she placed it back on the rack for a few more minutes of cooking. “Hey, G-Man!” She called to a house that lay to the side of the clearing. Made of elvish design, it was carved out of sparkling rose quartz that glittered in the face of the sun and moon. Although seemingly small, inside it housed a number of chambers: three bedrooms, and one sitting room. Faith and Tara had built it long ago way back when; with their knowledge of magics, they had been able to blast through the rock and form a suitable house and Giles with his masonry skills, molded it into a work of art.

“Snowscar.” Faith whispered to the white tiger that lay by her side, sleeping. Immediately, the yellow eyes snapped open, and the great animal slowly lifted its head to look at the elf. “Go get G-man, he probably fell asleep. Again.”

The tiger glared at her as if to say ‘You’re waking us ALL up?’ Snowscar laid down and closed her eyes, ignoring Faith.

“Man!” Faith sighed. “Where’s Tara when you need her?” She could’ve gotten the lazy oaf to move. But to her surprise, she did not need Snowscar’s help to rouse Giles, nor Tara’s. At that moment, the man came lumbering out of the crystal house, rubbing his eyes behind his glasses, awoken from his nap. “Well looks like I didn’t have to wake you up for once.” Faith teased.

“Good evening to you too, Faith.” Giles sat down beside the elf and tiger. “That is our meal, I suppose.” Giles indicated the fish on the cooking rack, his Silvaseti elvish slightly marred with a Draenor accent. He was probably the only human to ever set foot in Silvaseti territory without being swarmed on by the entire elf army. Though his mother was an elf, his blood had no tinge of Silvaseti blood while his sister had no human’s. He had gone to live with his father in Draenor as a child, and wasn’t allowed access into the Night Elves territory till after the First War when he was allowed to enter on special circumstances.

The war was bloody and both sides took heavy tolls. His mother, sister and brother-in-law were all killed; his father had died years earlier of natural causes. His entire family was dead. All but him and…and his nieces. A baby girl named Dawthalar, and a girl of five, named Tarathalas. The elves were compassionate enough to give Giles access into Silvaseti so long as he took care of his nieces. However, they always kept a close eye on him.

Not very familiar to the elven tongue, he gave the girls human names of Dawn and Tara. He reared them as if they were his own daughters, loving them with all his heart.

And then came the time when another orphan was brought into his care, a nameless girl with eyes of a falcon, hair blacker than the darkest of nights. Black hair among elves meant one of two things: a dark elf, or a child born from the clan of Demon Hunters. The child was found abandoned, but no one would claim her. The Hunters stepped forward but could not see if the baby was one of its own, as the girl was still too young to show any of her powers. So once again, the elf governing head dumped the girl onto the nearest and most convenient caretaker, Giles.

Giles named her Faith, for the elven society thought of her as an outcast with no one to care for her or believe in her, but he did. And so did Tara who, was seven at the time, gave her an elven name, Faithasala. And of course the Hunters, when it become clear that Faith was indeed one of them when Faith was able to locate the site of their camp, which was magically cloaked and enchanted to moved around so only the Hunters were able to see. They named her Shadowsong for she was born in the shadows of a great elven empire.

The three girls grew up together, each with their shares of happiness, misery, and sorrow. But they grew closer together for each hurdle they jumped. Tara taught Dawn to walk, and Faith taught her to run. Dawn looked for a girlfriend for Tara and Faith beat up the bullies. Tara showed Faith how to ride the tigers and wolves that inhabited the forests, and Dawn showed her how to look for stars in the night sky that pointed the way home. When Giles was able to dig out their family tattoo signature from the Silvaseti Archives in the nation capital, Silvarion, the sisters were each other’s artists as they etched the family sigil into their bodies, a privilege reserved for the closest of elves, it was a tribute to their bond as sisters.

But now it was different Tara and Dawn were off to school. And Faith was left to complete her Hunter training. The rarely saw each other and drifted just a little bit further away from each other.

“Yeah… Faith sighed pathetically. “Sucks huh? The Than-Thalas River seems to be running out of fish or something.” She reached for the fish, making the mistake of picking it up by the fish tail. “Oh ouch! Shit!”

“Now, Faith.” Giles started, grabbing the fish before Faith burned her hand any farther. “Mind your tongue.”

Faith stopped blowing her burned fingers for a second to smirk and say sarcastically. “Yes, Father.” Giles sighed and shook his head, handing the fish on the spit to the girl.

Faith bit into the fish with all gusto, spitting out fish bones every now and then. It seemed to take only an instant for Faith to devour half of it, before handing the rest back to Giles. Giles raised an eyebrow at the half-eaten meal before shaking his head no.

“You sure?” Faith asked again, waving the spit. Giles confirmed, so Faith drew out the long stick out of what remained of the fish’s body, and waved it in front of the nose of the tiger that lay next to her. “Hey Snowscar…got something for ya!”

Snowscar opened her eyes at the smell of the cooked meat, with a snap of her mighty jaws, the fish was gone. She rose to her feet and looked at Faith to say ‘Is there more?’, her tail twitching this way and that to show her anxiousness.

“Sorry, bud.” Faith shrugged. The tiger frowned at her and fell back on her haunches, tail still twitching. “Oh okay!” She got up, picking up the swords that rested at her feet and slinging them onto her back before tying the leather thongs. “I’ll get you a deer or bird or squirrel or…something.” She walked around the fire and disappeared into the crystal house.

Giles glanced from the door of the house to the tiger, who seemed to be grinning at the idea of another meal. “Do you have complete control over all of them?” Giles asked, wondering of Dawn, and Tara.

Faith reappeared, a quiver of arrows at her hip and a bow in her hand. “Don’t think Tara would mind would she?” She waved the bow.

“Just don’t break it like last time.” Giles smiled. Faith rolled her eye and disappeared into the forest. Beat. “Bring me a rabbit!”

Faith rushed into the bushes and leapt into the night. She shoved her way through the underbrush, pushing aside the tree branches, though with care. Twigs and foliage crunched beneath her boots. She was a deer gliding through the forest, slipping through the trees. Faith pushed forward to reach the hunting grounds, running through the woodlands with relative ease, as she was born and raised in the forests of Silvaseti.

She slowed her pace as she neared the hunting grounds, her feet no longer pounding the woodland floor, she remained agile and swift but now treaded softly, her boots never making a thump. She finally slowed to a stop, after tens of minutes of endless running. She was a few miles away from her home. Elves had much for vigor than humans did, able to sprint long distances without losing breath or having to stop for sake of sore muscles. Such attributes Faith needed while hunting for supper. The sun had set just a few minutes ago, the moon was beginning to make its appearance in the night sky, a disadvantage Faith would have to brush off.

Silvaseti were greatly known for their adaptation to the dark. Their sight was greatly sharper in the night than their Qualiseti and Qualinost cousins, who worshiped the day. There was no such thing as stubbed toes to the Night Elves.

Finding a suitibale spot to await her prey, a large green bush, Faith slipped the bow from her back. She leant the bow across one thigh, and braced it down with the other ankle, then slipped the string hole into the cleft at the tip of the bow. Kneeling behind the plant, she drew an arrow from the quiver and notched it to the string of her weapon. Silently she waited for an animal to make the mistake of crossing her path, she didn’t have to wait long.

It was a rabbit. The arrow flew straight and true, piercing the animal’s body. Faith rushed from her bush to gather her winnings. It was large, and thankfully pretty fat. Its brown thick fur would probably make a good lining for a belt.

She thanked the Moon Goddes, Elune for her capture, and the rabbit for giving its life to feed her family, as was traditional when ending a hunt. She took a flax cord and bound the animals feet together for easier carriage.

“Faith.”

The dark-haired girl dropped the animal, and whirled around, whipping out her twin swords.

A male elf on the back of a wolf reached her eye. Both were staring at her intensely, their eyes piercing to her soul. “Put those away, you have no need of them.” The elf spoke, his voice quiet. The wolf sniffed, raising its head. It had smelled the freshly killed rabbit. The wolf was enormous; it matched Snowscar size for size. Wolves and tigers were thrived in Silvaseti, all growing to humongous proportions, towering over their lesser cousins in the Distali Forests of Qualiseti.

Moon Priestesses, in the Temple of the Moon, used the tigers to ride into battle during times of war, and close companions in times of peace. Wolves were the same to the Hunters. The creatures chose their riders, and shared empathetic bonds with them They only chose among the Priestesses and Hunters, no one else. Except when Snowscar had chosen Tara who belonged to neither. It was a phenomenon recorded into the Silvaseti Archives. It was now understood that the animals did choose elves outside those social classes. But who and why would they be chosen still remained a mystery.

“Geezus, Angelus!” Faith sighed angrily. “Can’t you see I’m busy!” She buried the tips of her swords into the ground, bent down, picked up the dead rabbit, and waved it at him. The wolf licked its chops. “On no, SaberFang, not this time!” She stowed the kill behind her back.

“Yes I can see.” Angelus nodded. He petted SaberFang’s neck, telling him to not bowl over Faith and steal her kill, as he did last time.

“Well do you mind? I have a deer to kill!” Faith said in impatience.

“Solace has been attacked.”

“So?” Faith snorted. “What do I care about what the Elf Army does?”

“They weren’t attacked by elf forces. They were attacked by their own people.” Angelus didn’t seem to bat an eye as he sat upon SaberFang, who pawed the ground impatiently.

Faith’s eye widened. “The Burning Legions.” She whispered. But Angelus caught it.

“The demons, they’re back.” Angelus nodded. “They’ve taken Draenor.”

“They’ve taken over the minds of the Human Alliance.” Faith uttered still under shock. “When were they attacked?”

“Yesterday. Our Owl Scouts traveled overnight to get the news to us. The humans are less organized, Qualiseti and Qualinost will know tomorrow, a week for Thanet. Draenor will release the news in five days, blaming it on the elves.”

“Why would the Burning Legions want to attack a village as small as Solace?”

“To show the humans that even the smallest town is not safe from the elves.” Angelus said in disgust. “Fear is a powerful weapon if used correctly.”

Solace was probably the only human town that received any respect from the Elven Nations. Solace was a city of trees, all the houses and buildings had been built up into the branches of their great giant trees that been coaxed into forming their walls and roofs. The trees were so big that the entire town’s populace could have easily joined hands and formed a circle around one of the smallest. In the village’s construction, the humans felt it was better form their buildings to match the trees instead of cutting them down to make their houses. The elves recognized the townspeople of Solace, who had respected nature and life.

Faith shook her head sadly. How could this be? The rising of the Burning Legion was only a theory until now. It was confirmed that the demons were indeed returning to Kranin.

“Tara. Dawn-“

“They are safe where they are.” The male elf said. “The mages will take care of them. They don’t let the outside world interfere with their teaching of magic. I doubt if the news were to be known among the students.”

“Tara has to know!” Faith said forcefully. She would not have her sister ignorant.

“Then tell her. Send Beren again. But don’t ask for Tara to come home. The humans are going to retaliate, and Silvaseti is the most ideal place to attack. Our nation is considerably smaller than Qualiseti and Qualinost.”

Faith nodded, and turned to run back home to tell Giles what happened.

“Faith.”

Faith stopped, staring impatiently at Angelus as if to say ‘Get on with it!’ She wasn’t the only one, SaberFang was getting antsy.

“If they do attack…”

“I will defend Silvaseti, as I promised.” She pointed to her blind eye, the empty socket with the invisible eye.

“I know. I just thought that after-“

“I will defend Silvaseti!” Faith said, a sharp edge to her voice. A flash of hate appeared in her single eye but then disappeared. “Even after she died.”

They were silent, each staring at the other, remembering the past filled with happiness and bliss. Of better times with better people. When there was no war, and no one had to fear for their lives.

Then reality came back, and everything was cold and hard. They were reminded of their task, their vow to protect Silvaseti and its people. The people they both hated with all their hearts or what was left of Faith’s, which had been crucified on a wall long ago. Dead, raped, burned, still dripping blood that was splattered across the walls. Face frozen in a picture of agony, muscled tight with pain even in death.

Faith’s lips drew back into a smile filled with hate. A smile that would have run a devil’s blood cold. “I will defend Silvaseti.” She repeated. “But not its people.”

Oh WOW. This fic is absolutely brilliant! Where can I find some of your other fics? Are they posted on a site or on the board?

I love how sisterly Tara and Dawn are, and I can't wait for them all to meet. I was completely clueless when Dawn said her sister was gay, but I don't feel too bad because Willow didn't know either!

Cool updates!! It's a good thing that Tara helped Willow with her test otherwise she would've failed the air portion...and that teacher didn't seem very nice, he was just waiting for Willow to fail. Looks like Faith is gonna have to get into some fighting action....can't wait :grin

I'm glad to see Willow and Tara are getting closer... well, glad is an understatement! But Tara has her Test soon... uh oh.

I like the history you've built up for the characters, very enthralling. Want more, soon. :)

This is awesome, I love the buildup you are fashioning here. Things look like they are about to get real interesting and i'm willing to bet Willow and Tara (and dawn too) will not be as far away from the trouble as they should be.

I'm glad you are using all the characters in this story...especially given the genre you're working in, it makes sense to have many different characters with different skills. I can't wait for you to bring them all together (specially since you hinted at including a B/F relationship).

keep up the good work:)
