Chapter 4:
“Yeah Willow, sure. You know that you can talk to me about anything. You’re looking a little nervous about something. Are you still worried about Xander? Cuz I already told you that he is a big boy who can take care of himself. He’ll be fine in a few days.”
“Actually Buffy this has nothing to do with Xander. I’m worried about Tara. Last night she told me she would come home with me today but just a hour ago when I asked if she wanted to go back to her dorm or stay here she said she wanted to go back to her dorm. What’s that all about huh? I’m not sure she trusts me.”
“Willow, I honestly don’t think that’s it at all. If she didn’t trust you then she wouldn’t have come here with you this morning. Maybe she just wants to take things slow. You know, to make sure nothing goes wrong this time. You and I both know she loves you, who couldn’t look at her and not see that?”
“I know she loves me Buffy. That’s not what I’m saying. I don’t know, I guess I’m a little worried and maybe I’m just being paranoid or something. Maybe I’m just over reacting. So how’s thing’s going with you? It feels like its been forever since we’ve had one of our girl talks. Anything happing on your end in the love department?”
“Or maybe you use to word maybe too much. And no not really, but I am so happy for you and Tara. She really loves you. And I know you love her too. You both just have to work hard to keep things on track and running smoothly. I also think Tara may be a little nervous about being around me. You know after everything that happened last night. I mean I could have really hurt her with that stunt I pulled. I could have gotten us all killed. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay Buffy. We all know you weren’t yourself after that demon poked you with his pokey thing. So don’t even worry about it. No one holds it against you, not me and not Tara. I just wish she would let me know what’s going on with her. I can’t lose her again Buffy, I just can’t. She’s my entire being, my reason for existence.”
“She’s not going anywhere, I promise not to let anything happen to her and your going to make sure she doesn’t leave again right? Well, it looks like it’s just the two of us. Dawn’s cleaning her room and then heading to Janice’s. What do you want to do?”
“I don’t really care, just whatever.”
Across town Xander is packing up some things in his apartment that remind him of Anya. Everything reminds him of Anya. The radio is on in the background, the words to the song really get to him even though it’s not the exact some situation.
Living my life in a slow hell
Different girl every night at the hotel
I ain’t seen the sunshine in 3 damn days
Been fueling up on cocaine and whiskey
Wish I had a good girl to miss me
Lord I wonder if I’ll ever change my ways
Xander picks up a picture of Anya, looks at it for a moment and then drops in the box. Tears stream down his face but he doesn’t even bother to wipe them away. The lyrics in the song making him cry harder.
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to her
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to her
Anya opens the door to the magic box and closes it behind her. With a box in her hand she walks over to the radio and flips the switch to cut it on. The same song Xander is listening to across town fills the room. The lyrics hit her as well as she wipes at her tears.
Caught you last night at the hotel
Everyone knows but they won’t tell
But their half hearted smiles tell me something just ain’t right
I’ve been waiting on you for a long time
Fueling up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain’t heard from you in 3 damn nights
Anya walks over to the cash register and picks up a silver picture frame that was sitting over to the side. The picture was taken of them at the prom their senior year of high school. She places the picture in the box with the rest of her things.
I put your picture away
I wonder where you’ve been
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to him
I put your picture away
I wonder where you’ve been
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to him
Both Xander and Anya sit down and cry. Anya at the table in the shop and Xander on the couch in his apartment. They are still listening to the song in the background.
I saw you yesterday with an old friend
It was the same ol’ same how have you been
Since you’ve been gone my worlds been dark and gray
You reminded me of better days
I hoped you were coming home to stay, I was head to church
I was off to drink you away
Xander stands up with the box in his hands and walks to the door. Anya stands up as well and does the same thing, locking up the shop as she leaves. In both Xander and Anya’s car the end of the song still plays.
I thought about you for a long time, can’t seen to get you off my mind
I can’t understand why we’re living life this way
Just called to say I want you to come back home
I found your picture today, I swear I’ve changed my ways
I just called to say I love you, come back home
Back at the Summers house Willow and Buffy are watching Girls Just Want to Have Fun when Dawn comes down the stairs. “Hey guys whatcha doin’? It that the old movie with Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker?”
“Nothing, just watching some TV. And yes it is…Want to join us?” Willow asks as she scoots over to make a little room for Dawn.
“No thanks. I just finished cleaning my room so can I go now? You said I could when I got done and guess what? I’m done.”
“Yeah go ahead. Don’t forget you have to get Janice’s mom to call me if you want her to come with tonight. OH! And don’t forget we have to meet Xander at the Bronze, so…”
“Don’t be late. Yeah, yeah. I got it, I’ll be home in time.” Dawn kisses Buffy on the cheek and gives Willow a hug before walking out of the door. Buffy notices that Dawn is wearing one of her shirts but doesn’t say anything. “Love you!”
“Love you too”, they both say without taking their eyes from the movie in front of them. After it is a really good part were that rich bitch Natalie gets what she deserves when all of the freaks wreck her party.
Meanwhile up in Willow’s room everything isn’t going as smoothly as it is downstairs. Tara tosses and turns in the bed kicking the covers to the floor. She moaning in her sleep and her body trembles.
* Tara’s Dream *
Tara sits all alone in a dark and cold room, she shivers as she hears the sounds of rats running at her feet. Her head has a dull ache but as she goes to reach for it she realizes her hands are tied behind her back and she is blindfolded. Tara’s thoughts run wild ‘What the hell is this?’ Tara’s breathing quicken as she feels a presence getting closer.
“Willow? Willow are you there?”
The door opens with a creek and Tara shudders as the heavy footsteps on the hard floor get closer and closer to her.
“Willow, is that you? This isn’t funny anymore, talk to me please.” Deep down Tara knows the presence standing behind her is definitely not her lover.
“Aww, I’m sorry little sister. Were you expecting someone other than me? Your girlfriend and her friends won’t be here to help you this time. So you might as well shut your mouth and stop calling out to her before I gives you something other than the rats to fear.” Donny sneers at Tara as he sees her shrink under the harshness of his voice. It delights him beyond words, causing her so much pain yet not even touching her.
“D-Do-Donny, why are you doing this? Why can’t you just leave me alone and allow me to live my life in happiness? I haven’t done anything expect love you and you lied to me! Why are you…” Tara feels another presence enter the room, it’s not Willow either but the person she fears most in the world. “F-father?”
“Ahh, Tara. Why do you question things you know you have no business questioning? You know this calls for punishment. Do you recall the little stunt you pulled on your birthday? Embarrassing me in front of all those people? You know better, don’t you Tara?”
“I’m sorry father, but you were the one who lied to me for years on years about me being…”
Mr. McClay brings his hand across Tara’s face making her yelp in pain. Donny smiles and snikers, he loves it when Tara cries. “Silence! You know better than to speak without permission young lady. Look at what you’ve made me do.” Tara could remember when she was a little girl and her father would hit her. He would always say she made him do it. She sassed too much he would say, the memories came flooding back into Tara’s mind as she felt tears well in her eyes. The tears begin to fall but are soaked up instantly by the binding on her eyes. “This is your fault Tara, all your fault. You’ll learn to obey me again one day. You’ll learn to kept your mouth shut and not make me angry. Your coming back home with us this time Tara. Last time we gave you the chance to say goodbye and you betrayed me. So this time there will be no goodbyes.”
Sobs rack Tara’s body but yet she manages to speak without stuttering. “Father please don’t do this. I’m happy here with my friends, I’m happy with Willow. We finally got things on track again. I can’t just leave. Please don’t take all of my happiness away from me.” Deep down Tara knows that if she goes with her father she would never see Willow again and that puts a sorrow in her heart that is almost to much to bare. She can see the look in Willow’s eyes when she finds out that’s she is gone.
“Tara you are coming home with us right now and I don’t want to hear another word about it. You are my daughter and you will do as I say.” He reaches behind her and releases her hands. They fall limply by her side. Tara hears the voice in her head saying ‘It’s over now, they going to drag you home and you’ll never see Willow again. It’s over.’ He reaches for the blindfold and removes it. Tara’s tears now stream down her face, the blindfold no longer keeping them hidden. “Tara tears will get you no where. Your coming home and you are going to be happy. Do you understand?” Mr. McClay feels a sadness in his heart at the sight of his daughter weeping before him, begging.
“Father please, please don’t make me come with you. It’s not fair, I’m old enough to make my own decisions now. You can’t make them for me any longer.” Tara bites down on her tongue as the last word leaves her mouth. ‘Oh boy, shouldn’t have said that. Stupid!’ she says in her mind.
Mr. McClay yanks her but by the hair and Tara screams in pain. Not just the pain her father is causing in her head but the pain she fells in her heart. The sorrow of loosing Willow again after they just found each other again. One more hard slap makes Tara scream again.
“Willow!” Tara sits up in bed and looks around the room, her breathing is heavy and filled with tears.
Downstairs Tara’s screaming makes both Willow and Buffy jump from the couch and run upstairs. Buffy, being the slayer started off in front but Willow passed her on the stairs like she was standing still.
Willow practically tears the door down trying to get in. “Tara, what’s wrong?” Willow asks while trying to get her breathing under control. Willow walks to the bed and Tara instantly launches herself into Willow’s embrace. Willow can feel the pain coming from Tara in waves and it makes her sick. “Shh Tara, it’s okay baby. I’m right here.” Willow rubs soothing circles on Tara’s back but Tara doesn’t even notice, she just buries her head in Willow’s shoulder and sobs. Willow turns her head to Buffy who is standing by the door, “Buffy, can you give us a few?”
“Sure Will. I’ll just be downstairs if you need me.”
Willow just shakes her head as she watches Buffy leave the room and close the door behind her. Willow’s heart is breaking right along with Tara’s. “Tara? Baby please talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“B-b-Bad dream.”
Willow winced at the stutter, she knows exactly what it meas. Tara is scared and that makes Willow scared too. “The same dream? You in the park at night, me being a vampire?” She removes Tara from her arms and walks to the mirror. Her reflection looks back at her. “See look, there it is. Mr. Good Ol’ Reflection. See, no vampness here.”
“No Willow, this was an entirely different dream. No vampires involved this time.”
“No vampires involved? This is Sunnydale, vampires are ALWAYS involved in Sunnydale.”
“Not in my dream they aren’t. My dream involved a very pissed off brother and father. Who were still very bitter with me because of what happened last time they were in town. And this time there was no one to stop them. They told me I was coming and practically dragged me.”
Willow’s heart breaks once again at the tone is Tara’s voice, the fear. She walks over to the bed and sits down beside Tara. Tara doesn’t say anything as she lays her head in Willow’s lap and cries. Willow feels the tears at the back of her eyes. ‘Don’t you cry’ she scolds herself. ‘Just comfort Tara, that’s all that matters’. She gently runs her finger through Tara’s hair. “It’s okay sweetie, as long as I’m here no one will ever take you away. I promise you that.”
“They said this time you and your friends weren’t there to help me this time. Father said this time he wasn’t giving me the chance to say goodbye like he had the first time. He said things would be good at home, that I would be happy. Please don’t ever let them take me. I don’t think I could take it if we are apart again. It hurt too much last time.” Tara knows Willow will do anything to keep her safe, and that scares Tara. It makes her feel safe but it scares her at the same time.
“I promise, no one will ever take you away from me. They would have to kill me first. Your father doesn’t deserve your love, they don’t deserve to have you in their life. And if they even try to take you again then I’ll just have to have Buffy kick both their asses. We both know she could take them without even breaking a seat. You know slayer strength and all the good stuff. And I don’t think Buffy would take too kindly of them coming anywhere near you. She hates then just as much as me and that’s a lot.”
“I love you so much Willow and if they do ever come back I wouldn’t be safe and neither would you. So you have to promise me that if they ever come back that you’ll stay as far away from them as possible. They are dangerous and I don’t think I could live with myself if anything happened to you at the hands of my family. I’d make sure they would have to kill me to get anywhere near you.” Tara feels her anger rise at the thought of her family coming within 2 feet of her Willow. She promised herself the first time they left that if they ever came back then she would kill them and go to jail before they touched Willow.
“Tara I’m not scared of your family.” ‘Yeah right Rosenburg, you just keep telling yourself that. Maybe if you say it enough you’ll start believing it’. “We’ll keep you safe. Me, Buffy and the Scooby’s, nothing will ever hurt you again. I promise you that.” ‘That it, make promises you can’t keep Willow. Let her down again.’
“But Willow…”
Willow cuts her off. “But nothing Tara, I love you ad nothing will ever come between us again, nothing will ever change the fact that you and I are soul mates.” Willow pulls Tara into a hug but in her head she is screaming at herself for making promises to Tara that she may not be able to keep. ‘Sometimes people get hurt, no matter who tries to prevent it’. “Are you okay baby?”
“Yeah I’m fine. I don’t know why I’m getting so worked up about a dream. I just seemed so real, like my family were really here and they were very pissed off and set in their on way. They had me tied up and blindfolded in a dark room with rats.” Tara shivers as she recalls the dream. “I calling out to you but you weren’t there. Just my father and Donny. My head hurt and my father hit me across the face.” Tara brings her hand to her face as her tears fall. “I kept calling out to you but they said you weren’t coming this time. I remember thinking that they were going to drag me home with them and I would never see you again. I was praying so hard that Buffy would break down the door at any minute and save me. She never came, she never came Willow.” Tara cries even harder as she pulls Willow closer to her. “No one ever came.”
“Tara baby I will always come for you. I will always find you, do you remember me telling you that? It was just a dream, granted a very scary dream but still a dream none the less. Just you’re subconscious getting the better of you. I would never let you down, you mean too much to me. There is absolutely no way they will ever take you away from me. I don’t care if I have to be by your side at all times, 24-7 if I have to be. No questions asked, I’ll be right there. You’re my life baby and when my life is in danger I’m not a happy Willow. The same goes for Buffy, she loves you too just in a different way than me. Which is good because if she loved you THAT way then I might have to get violent with her and that would be bad because she would totally kick my ass.”
Tara lifts her head and gives a little smile. “Always the comic, my girlfriend.”
“But you love me. Who wouldn’t love me? I just so the lovable type. Buffy loves me, Dawn loves me, Xander loves me and maybe even Anya loves me.” She shivers. “Ugh that scary, Anya loving me? But no ones love means more to me than your does. The love we share is priceless.” ‘Keep babbling Willow, Tara looks so cute when she smiling like that.’
“You’re right, I do love you. I will always love you. Thank you for being here, you have no idea how much it means to me. I know deep down that you won’t let anything happen to me. It’s just like you said, my subconscious playing games with me. I’m letting my fears get the best of me and that’s never good now is it?”
“That’s my girl. Everyone has fears and everyone has nightmares. Remember? I had a nightmare myself last night. My greatest fear is you getting hurt right in front of me and me not being able to do a damn thing to help you. So you see, you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Even Buffy has, the slayer has fears. The first year Buffy moved to Sunnydale a little boy whom was in a coma was making people worst fears come to life. My fears were a little different back then, but as long as I’m with you I can face anything. Fears and all, bring it on! Just as long as you’re here right by my side.” She kisses Tara’s forehead. “I Love you so very much.”
“I love you too Willow.” Tara pulls her head out of Willow’s lap and sit up on the bed. “What time is it?” Tara rubs her eyes.
Willow looks at her watch and smiles. “Almost 6, you’ve been asleep for a while now. Are you feeling any better, you look so much better.” ‘Ugh Willow, she’s gonna think your saying she looked bad before.’ “Not that you looked bad before, it’s just you look well rested is all.”
“I know what you meant.” ‘She so cute when she’s all nervous.’ “But yes I do feel a lot better actually. I feel like I haven’t slept in days. But I’m up now and I’m ready to get my groove on at the Bronze.”
“Get your groove on huh? Where did you get that saying from?” Willow tries really hard not to laugh.
“Oh you know that song, with umm…Missy Elliot and Nelly Furtado. Et your groove on.”
“Baby that get your FREAK on”, she says as she busts out laughing. “Not get your groove on.”
“Groove…Freak…whatever, same difference to me. Whatever it is, I’m going to get it on.”
“I’m pretty sure they are different but whatever you say baby. You go get both your groove and freak on just as long as you get it on with me.” ‘Hehe, I’m such a horndog.’
“Geez Will, such a horndog. So are we going back to my dorm so I can change or what? Because I really should do something with my hair. I’m just not as cute as you are with the bed head thing going on, you might be able to get away with it but not me.”
“Yeah sure, I’ll take you to the dorm right fast before the Bronze. Down is at her friend’s house, Janice’s anyway. I think Buffy told her that Janice could come along with us. So if you are ready I’ll take you now. There isn’t anything else I need to do, I’m ready.”
“Yeah I’m ready”, she says as se stands up, “Okay well maybe I should change out of my shorts first. Because freezing to death isn’t something I look forward to doing.”
“Tara, this is California and the middle of Spring. I don’t think you have to worry about freezing to death. But if you want to change back into your jeans then that’s fine too. I think you look sexy in these though.” ‘Is that good?’ she asked herself. “Well maybe on second thought you should change back into your jeans.”
“Willow I didn’t realize you were the jealous type, I think I kinda like it. Someone who loves me not wanting anyone else looking at me. It’s kind of sweet in my opinion.”
“It’s not that I’m jealous.” ‘Give it up girl, your jealous.’ “Well maybe a little bit jealous.” Tara gives her this ‘uh-huh’ look. “Okay so I’m a lot jealous. Ad you going out looking like that will get both the girl and guys attention.”
“Just because the are looking doesn’t mean I’m going anywhere. I’m your girlfriend and I don’t plan on going anywhere. So you’re stuck with me for a very long time to come. So you might as well go ahead and get use to it.” She leans in and gives Willow a kiss. “Oh and you might want to get use to those as well because I have a feeling I’m going to be doing that a lot.”
“I have no problem getting use to it right now.” She pulls Tara close an dkisses her passionately. “Maybe you’re the one who should get use to it, not me. Because as you can see I have no problem with it.” Willow gives a 100 watt smile.
“Umm…I have no problem what so ever with it. Kissing my beautiful girlfriend is very high on my list o’ things to do. It may even be first on that list. I’d have do a double check. Because after all I have so many things on that list that I’m not even sure…”
“Tara! Stop teasing. I better be on the top of your list. Because your definitely at the top of mine.” Willow kisses her again just to prove her point. Plus she just really liked kissing her.
“Okay Willow, you win. Kissing you is on the top of my list. In fact kissing you is the only thing on my list right now.” ‘Well I could think of a few other things I’d like to do to her’ Tara thinks wickedly. “But we should really get up and get going if we are going to be on time tonight.”
“Tara, we still have at least 2 more hours before we have to meet the gang. I know it doesn’t take you 2 hours to get ready.”
“No it doesn’t but I can’t be sure as to what will happen when I get you back to my dorm with me. Just us, all alone.” Willow gives Tara a shy smile. “So what do you say? Are we ready to go or not?”
“Oh yeah sweetie, I’m ready to go.” Willow pulls Tara off the bed and towards the door.
“Wait Willow! I need to put on my jeans”, she says as Willow drags her down the hall. Tara tries to go back but Willow keeps pulling. “Willow!”
“Forget the jeans, you look fine. Let’s just go!” Willow pulls Tara down the stairs and finally stops when she reaches the bottom step. “Buffy?” When she doesn’t answer right away Willow yells, “BUFFY!” ‘Subtle Willow, real subtle.’
Buffy runs into the living room holding a bowl of popcorn in one had and a soda in the other. “What!?” ‘Oh shit, what did I do this time’, she thinks to herself while looking back and forth between Willow and Tara. “What ever it is, I didn’t do it!”
“I’m taking Tara back to her dorm room, she needs to change her clothes and do something with her hair. It shouldn’t take very long. We will just meet up with you guys at the Bronze around 8ish.” She pulls Tara to the door.
“Tara aren’t you going to put on some jeans or something before you go out? I know it Spring but still. And shoes might be a good thing too.”
“See I told you Willow.” She heads back towards the stairs but Willow grabs her hand.”
“She doesn’t need to change, that’s why we are going to the dorm. She can change there. Right Buff?” she gives Buffy a ‘just-say-it’s-fine-so-we-can-go-look’. ‘Come on Buffy just agree with me.’
“Yeah right Will, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. I’ll see you huys later at the Bronze then.” Buffy walks over to the couch giving Willow a wink. ‘Yeah Willow, I know what you wanna do’, she thinks snikering. “Love you guys, see you tonight.”
“Love you too, BYE!” Willow opens the door and pulls Tara out it.
“Bye Bu…” Willow slams the door and Tara’s words are cut off. Buffy just smiles and continues watching her movie and eating her popcorn.
