Okay, it took me a while to get here and catch up, but count me among those waiting patiently for the next update now ;-) I really like the trio of Willow, Tara and Dawn, regardless of the setting - and the setting is certainly a bonus in this case, a time full of turmoil and interest.

This most recent chapter, obviously Donald's horribleness lingers in the mind, but what got me most was Willow having that sick 'something's wrong' feeling in her stomach, even though at that moment she didn't really have any basis for it. Right or wrong (sadly right in thie case) it's a powerful feeling, and I like how it came into play.

Okay guys and gals...I'm very sorry I don't have an update for you yet. Just bad news and replies. The bad news is that my dad just passed away. I was very close to him and I am having an extremely difficult time dealing with his death. He was only 43. I don't know what to say other than I'm really sorry that there's not been an update, but as soon as I get the strength up to write again there will be a long update to make up for lost time. I love all you guys that have sent feedback and I will attempt an update soon.

willow_tara_always: Thanks for the fb. The update will be soon, hopefully.

Dianneswillowtree: I'm glad Willow killed him too. I have sort of a vengeful side sometimes and I can only imagine what I would do...

cantbefredless: I needed that hug. Your fb, whether it's just a few words or a paragraph, never ceases to inspire me.

Shy One: I think I like your idea... but we'll see what happens.

Naeryn: I really appreciate constructive fb and will do my best to take your advice. To tell the truth, I really just wanted the story to be based on their living a life together, but it's gotta start somewhere. I guess that's probably the best reason I rushed their relationship to start. I'd be interested to hear more about things that aren't happening if you get the time.

MagicPancakes: I'm a Civil War junkie too. My grandfather has hundreds of books on it and I used to sit in his office and read them. One of my decendants fought in the Civil War, and I thought it was a really cool time.

highlandlass25: Thanks. I really appreciate good replies, and I'll try hard to update soon. Hang in there!

Artemis: Wow, I'm honored to have your opinion. I've had the familiar sick feeling in my stomach too, not a pleasant thing I can say. I thought it was something I could give tangible feeling to and make real. Keep being patient, I promise I'll get to the update soon!

I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way. This is a good story, in it's essence. It just feels a bit... rough draft-y.

That's all I could and can think of, though. I'll certainly let you know if something else crops up.

I'm not going to do replies this time, just a big collective thank you for everyone's support and an apology for the long wait on the update...but here it is. I have more but it's still in the proofreading stage...it'll be up soon.

Disclaimers: Same as always.

Doctor Wesley Pryce was sitting in his parlor when Willow Rosenberg burst in, dripping wet and bleeding.

“Good lord! What happened to you Willow?” The Englishman was startled to say the least.

“I’m fine but you have to hurry. He hurt Dawn and Tara and-“

“Willow! Willow slow down! Now who hurt Dawn? And who’s Tara?” Wesley interrupted her.

Willow took a deep breath and tried again.

“There was a soldier and he asked to stay with us. Tara is a friend that will be residing with us from now on. I went to the quarry this morning and when I came home Dawn was hurt and Tara isn’t waking up. I think he did something to her.” Tears came to her eyes as she spoke.

Doctor Pryce placed his hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eyes.

“Let me get my bag and we’ll go see to them. What of the soldier? Where is he?”

Willow showed no remorse as she looked him back in the eyes and said plainly, “I killed him.”

“You what?!”

“I killed him. I drowned him in the stream near the farm.”

“Do you know what home guard will do to you if they find out? We must never speak of this again.” Wesley instructed her.

Willow nodded sagely and stepped toward the door. The wound on her side was beginning to hurt intensely and she could feel the warm blood running down her side. She forced her thought away from the pain however and focused on thoughts of Dawn and Tara. She hoped Dawn was okay and that Tara had woken up, but she had her doubts that Tara was conscious.

“Willow, can you hitch the horse to the carriage?” Wesley asked as he gathered his instruments.

“Yes.” Willow said and went outside into the cool evening air. As she made her way to the stables she stumbled and fell, then picked herself up out of the dust. She stumbled into the horse’s stall and pulled his halter to lead him outside. She stumbled again as she passed through the door and nearly fell, but Wesley caught her and steadied her on her feet.

“Easy now. I’ll get the horse, just stay here.” Wesley said as he leaned her against the stable doorway.

“I’m fine. We have to hurry.”

“We will get there soon enough. You’ll be no good to your sister and your friend if you are too weak to care for them.” Wesley gently chided her as he hitched the horse to his small open carriage. He climbed in and offered Willow his hand. She took it and gingerly climbed into the carriage, falling heavily into the seat.

“Just rest now. We’ll be at your plantation shortly.” Wesley said as he spurred his horse on towards the east. Each jolt sent a resounding jolt of pain through Willow’s side and she tried to hide her cringes of pain. The trip was short by horse and when they arrived it was nearly dark. Willow was relieved to see a faint light in her bedroom window. Wesley pulled the reigns of the carriage and brought it to a halt near the front steps. Willow jumped off the carriage and tried to run up to her sister and her lover but found that it was much more easily managed to walk quickly. She quickly made her way upstairs and to her room, and was immediately enveloped in a crushing hug from Dawn.

“It’s okay Dawnie, I’m here.” Willow soothed her. She looked toward Tara. “Did she wake up?”

Dawn shook her head against Willow’s shoulder. Doctor Pryce entered the room and took in the situation, then turned to Willow.

“I’m going to need some hot water Willow.” He said as he began to unpack his various medical instruments. Willow nodded and smoothed Dawn’s hair away from her face before turning and going downstairs to boil some water. Doctor Pryce leaned over the bed and looked over Tara, checking her pulse and breathing before turning her head to the side to look at the laceration from whatever blow she had obviously taken. He turned to Dawn and beckoned her to him and examined her cut over her eye. It was deep enough to need a few stitches. He prepared what he needed and then sat Dawn in a chair next to the bed by the light of the oil lamp on the nightstand. Willow returned with a pitcher of hot water, a basin full of hot water and an extra basin that was empty. She also had several clean cloths draped over her arm. She sat them on the nightstand and turned to Wesley.

“Well?” She asked as she put a hand to her own wound.

“Dawn needs stitches and Tara seems to be in reasonable shape considering the blow to the head that she took. I don’t know why she hasn’t woken up yet but she will eventually. I need to do a full examination but I don’t want Dawn to be in the room for that.” Wesley rolled up his sleeves and poured some water into the empty basin to wash with. Willow handed him a cloth to dry his hands and he began to clean and sew up Dawn’s cut. Tears ran from Dawn’s eyes and Willow sat next to her in the floor and held her hand. Wesley finished quickly and rewashed his hands.

“Dawn, I need you to leave for a while.” Willow gently guided her sister to the door.

Dawn nodded and stepped outside the room, closing the door behind her. She leaned back against the wall and slowly slid down to the floor. She could hear the doctor and Willow speaking in low tones and she tried to make out what was being said, but to no avail. After what seemed like forever, Doctor Pryce and Willow emerged from the room.

“Okay Dawn, you may go in.” Doctor Pryce said.

Willow had a look of pain and anger on her face and Dawn wondered what had been said that her sister’s countenance would be so dark. Doctor Pryce had sewn up her knife wound in her side, but Willow had felt no pain, only anger that she had let such a monster into her home with Dawn and Tara.

“I’m going to go home now. Remember to care for her as I have instructed. Don’t forget to cleanse Dawn’s wound as well as yours, and no work for at least a week. You must let the wound in your side close. I’ll stop by in a few days time. You know you can come get me if something should arise or if she doesn’t wake in a few hours.” Doctor Pryce shook Willow’s hand and turned for the door.

“Thank you doctor. I’ll repay you as soon as I’m able.”

“Nonsense. You just focus on taking care of your sister and that young lady upstairs. Good evening.” Wesley climbed into his carriage and Willow stood on the porch watching him leave. As soon as the light from his carriage lantern disappeared, she went back into the house. Dawn was standing just inside the door waiting for her. Willow embraced her sister and held her for a long time. When she pulled away, she attempted a weak smile and brushed her sister’s long brown hair from her face.

“Go to bed and get some rest. You’ve had a long day.”

“I want to stay with you. I want to make sure Tara is going to be alright.”

“I’m going to stay with her tonight. I’ll wake you if she awakens alright?”

Dawn nodded and Willow walked her upstairs and to her room. She kissed her sister on the forehead and closed the door softly. Venturing back down the hall, she entered her room and took up the seat near the bed. She carefully laced her fingers through Tara’s and let her eyes rest on Tara’s pale face.

“I’m so sorry Tara. Please, wake up. Please.” Willow began to cry. She kissed Tara’s lips and laid her head on the cold sheet near Tara’s hip. She cried until she fell asleep, her dreams turned nightmares as she saw visions of the terrible thing that had happened under her very roof.

That's all for now, more soon.

Hey sweetie. I'm very sorry for you loss. My father died when I was 23 – to early too. Hope you have some really good friends to give you support. It's a hard time to overcome. (I hope my English is not too bad so my words are kind enough).

Thanks for updating. I really missed that story. As I said before I really love Willow and Tara in a history setting – especially Civil War. Don't know why. It's just like it is.

You really gave your story some more time. Letting the characters explore their feelings and give us some to explore. Well done. And I so love tomboy Willow's protective behavior. She looks out for everyone Tara and Dawn. Only wonder what Tara will be going through after she becomes conscious again.

Sure, I would like to see an update soon. But take your time.

Okay, so I know you all hate me for leaving an update out for so long but I've been having some issues (family, school, computer..) I'm really sorry and I hope you can all forgive me.

Also another little side note, any typos are completely my fault. I did most of this when it was late. Hope the length of this one makes up for the lack of post-age.

When Willow awoke an hour later, it was to a quiet crying. She rubbed her eyes and sleepily looked around for Dawn. Not seeing her sister anywhere, she looked at Tara, expecting her to be asleep. Instead, she saw tear’s running down Tara’s face as she looked out the window opposite Willow.

“Tara?”

Tara blinked and another stream of tears made their way down her pale cheeks. She looked slowly at Willow and the redhead’s heart was crushed at the look of pain and vulnerability on her face. Willow moved from her seat next to the bed and carefully sat on the sheets next to Tara.

“Can I get you anything?” Willow asked, not really knowing what to say.

Tara shook her head and more tears escaped from their reservoirs.

“Tara, I…I know that what happened to you was terrible. I’m so sorry. I never should have left you alone with him.” Willow slid her hand over Tara’s. Tara continued to cry quietly, and Willow felt very lost. She didn’t know what to say or do or how to comfort Tara at all. She slid further up on the bed and carefully put her arm around the blonde’s shoulders. She didn’t expect much of a reaction, but Tara gingerly turned on her side and snuggled closer to Willow, letting the redhead’s shirt soak up her tears. She finally cried herself to sleep as Willow gently stroked her hair around the bandage that Dr. Pryce had placed on her wound. Willow lay there for the rest of the night until the morning’s light began to creep through the window. Willow ever so gently removed her arm from around Tara’s body and carefully laid the blonde back in the bed. She made her way quietly to the door and left Tara to sleep. She met Dawn coming out of her room.

“How is your head feeling?” Willow asked as she examined the bandages. They seemed to have slipped during the night.

“Like I wish that someone would shoot it off with a cannonball,” Dawn grumbled.

Willow smiled sympathetically and tried to re-adjust the bandage, but her finger slipped and she bumped Dawn’s wound accidentally.

“Ow! Be careful Will!” Dawn groaned and jerked away from her sister’s clumsy hand.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Willow said quietly.

“How is Tara?” Dawn inquired as she looked to the door from which Willow had just emerged.

“She woke up once and she cried the whole time, which I can’t blame her for, then she went back to sleep.” Willow glanced at the door.

“When will Dr. Pryce be here?”

“He said he’d stop by sometime this week, but he didn’t say when.”

“I hope it’s soon. I want him to look at Tara again and make sure she’ll be okay.”

“She’ll be okay Dawnie, I promise, but it’s going to take some time. She’s not going to be okay overnight. Something very terrible happened to her and she may never get over it. We just have to be there for her and show her that we love her and maybe that will help.”

Dawn nodded and Willow tucked a strand of hair behind her sister’s ear and ran her hand down the side of her face. Dawn smiled and nuzzled her face into Willow’s hand. They were interrupted by a sudden scream and they briefly locked eyes before bolting to Willow’s bedroom. Willow threw the door open and ran inside looking for trouble. Instead she saw Tara thrashing about in her sleep on the bed and was dangerously close to falling out of it. She rushed forward and grasped Tara by the upper arms and pushed her back up on the bed.

“Dawn help me!” Willow turned for a split second to yell for Dawn. In that split second, Tara kicked out and kicked Willow’s injured side, causing Willow to curse and recoil for a second. Dawn rushed forward and grabbed Tara’s legs, pinning her to the bed and allowing Willow to regain her hold on Tara’s upper arms and force her back to the mattress.

“Tara! Wake up! Wake up Tara! It’s just a bad dream!” Willow yelled and shook Tara as hard as she dared. Tara’s eyes flew open and she looked confused as she looked wildly from Dawn to Willow, then back to Willow. Dawn sat down on the bed and gathered Tara in her arms, gently rocking her as she would a small child.

“It’s okay Tara. We’re here. Willow’s here and I’m here and you’re safe. No one is going to hurt you again okay?”

Tara still looked confused as she clung to Dawn and allowed the teenager to rock her back and forth. Willow made sure to stand in front of Tara and reach out her hand to rub the blonde’s back so as not to startle the girl. Tara was beginning to feel nauseous and she pulled away from Dawn’s rocking. Willow was the first to notice something was wrong and stepped closer to the bed.

“Would you like to lie down again?” She asked quietly.

Tara nodded and Willow carefully helped her back to the top of the bed and guided her down onto the pillow there. Tara spoke something so quietly that Willow had to lean down to hear her better.

“What was that?” The redhead asked.

“You’re bleeding.” Tara said again, this time a little louder. She pointed at Willow’s side. Willow looked down and noticed a small circle of blood growing larger on her white shirt.

“I suppose I am.” She smiled weakly down at Tara and warily put a hand to her side. Tara looked alarmed.

“I’ll be okay. It’s just a scratch.” Willow lied. Tara didn’t look fooled as she continued to stare at the crimson spot on her lover’s shirt.

“What happened?” Tara asked.

“Nothing important. What’s important is that you get your rest and we get you all fixed up.”

Tara still wasn’t buying the redhead’s story. She looked over at Dawn without a word, but her eyes seemed to say it all as they took on a concerned look.

“I’ll look after her.” Dawn said as she pulled the blankets back up over Tara’s body. Tara nodded and seemed satisfied with that as her head began to swim and she fell back into a fitful sleep. Willow motioned toward the door with her head and Dawn nodded as she stood from the bedside. They quietly made their way out of the room and Willow left the door cracked a bit as she pulled it closed behind her. They both went downstairs and into the kitchen, where Dawn pulled up Willow’s shirt. When Tara had kicked out, she had kicked Willow’s wound and had opened it back up. The bandage was already soaked through and the blood was beginning to run down Willow’s side. Dawn removed the soiled bandages and cleaned the cut with some water and a rag, then replaced the bandage with a clean one.

“Thanks Dawnie.” Willow said as she tugged her shirt back into place. “I’ll have to be more careful next time. I can’t be upsetting Tara like that.”

“Well it’s good to see her focus on something other than…what happened.” Dawn said with a shiver.

“It’s good to see her focus on something else yes, but she doesn’t need anything else to worry about.” Willow slowly paced the room as she spoke. She kept an ear open for any noise from upstairs and was satisfied for the time being that Tara was sleeping.

“What are we going to do Dawnie? How are we going to take care of her?” Willow was frustrated with the situation.

“I don’t know. I suppose we just have to be there. She’s really the only one that can take care of those feelings inside of her.”

Willow looked at Dawn with a tiny smile and ruffled her sister’s hair.

“How did you grow up so fast?”

Dawn shrugged and gave Willow a warm smile, looking more and more sleepy by the minute.

“You need to get some rest. How about this, we’ll take shifts watching her and the one that isn’t watching can get some rest. I’ll take first shift and you go back to bed. I’ll wake you in an hour.”

Dawn reluctantly agreed with the plan and trudged upstairs to her bedroom. Willow returned to the chair next to Tara’s bed. Tara slept for most of that time. She woke up once, allowed Willow to give her a bit of water, and then went back to sleep.

This is such a difficult time, for all three of them - they're all hurt, and none of them really able to give themselves over completely to caring for each other. Tara obviously is in no condition to take care of Willow and Dawn, but the two of them as well are in pain, as much from Tara's ordeal as from their own. I found it particularly significant that Willow couldn't yet tell Tara what had happened to her, and how she'd been wounded - there's so much pain already for them to deal with that she can't, yet, reveal that to Tara, even though that in itself is no doubt causing Tara to worry - even in the worst shape of the three, Tara's compassion for Willow and Dawn is unchanged.

Thanks for the update, and may there be another one soon - hopefully with a little ray of sunshine of some kind for our three girls, to help them deal with this dark time.

Note:The song is by Nickle Creek, formerly a Robert Burns poem circa 1791 Scotland...I hope you listen to the song, it doesn't really mean anything but it's extremely comforting and I thought it was appropriate. Enjoy!

Over the next week, Tara continued to gain strength physically and her head wound seemed to be healing but the wounds on her mental state were slow to scar. Willow often could only watch helplessly as Tara would wake up thrashing and screaming. Or sometimes, Willow would come in during the middle of the night to check on the blonde, and find her crying softly. It was on these nights, Willow would bring in her mandolin and play and sing softly for Tara until she either went back to sleep or settled into silence once again.

Willow came into Tara’s room to find her crying quietly. She immediately turned and went downstairs to get her mandolin, bringing it back up to Tara’s small room and sitting in the wooden chair next to the bed. She plucked a few strings to tune the instrument and then began to strum softly an old Scottish tune. After playing a few opening notes she began to sing softly as well, noting Tara’s eyes slowly closing, more tears streaming down the sides of her face.

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Thou stock-dove whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forebear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair.

How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighboring hills,
Far mark'd with the courses of clear winding rills,
There daily I wander as noon rises high
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.

How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow;
There oft as mild Ev'ning weeps over the lea
The sweet scented birk shades my Mary and me.

Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides,
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As gathering sweet flow'rets she stems thy clear wave.

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays,
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Willow finished playing with a resounding echo of the mandolin’s strings and she sat quietly taking in Tara’s gently breathing form. She thought the young woman had gone back to sleep and got up to leave, but was stopped but the dulcet tones of a quiet voice.

“Will, please don’t go.” Tara’s voice infiltrated the silence like a needle through a cloth and Willow returned to her chair by the bed. She was unsure whether or not to take Tara’s hand, as the blonde had been a little jumpy about touching anyone as of late, so instead she settled her hand on the bed near enough to Tara’s to let her feel the warmth of skin in case she did in fact want to be touched. To her great surprise, Tara slid her hand over underneath Willow’s and allowed Willow to gently press their palms together.

“Your song was beautiful.” Tara said softly staring off into the space past Willow.

“I just-I just want to make you happy.” Willow managed with a sigh.

“I know you do Will, I know…” Tara trailed off as more tears leaked from her azure eyes.

“How are you feeling? Can I get you anything?” Willow asked at a loss for how to comfort her lover. She gently squeezed her hand again.

“No, just stay with me for a while.” Tara said almost as if she were uncertain of what she needed or wanted. Willow nodded her head silently and moved slowly to sit on the bed, hesitating for a moment to see if Tara would mind but Tara said nothing and Willow sat down carefully. Her wound still had not fully closed and it was very sore.

“How is your side?” Tara asked, her voice full of concern. Willow looked at her with a puzzled expression.

“How did you-?” She asked, surprised that Tara knew.

“It’s not difficult to notice that you favor it a bit, and Dawn might have mentioned it.” Tara said as her eyes searched Willow’s expression, hoping for an explanation.

“Oh, I didn’t want you to find out just yet. I knew you would worry.” Willow said sheepishly.

“I was worried the first day I saw the blood on your shirt. I told Dawn to make sure you got enough rest and kept the bandage clean.”

“Well she’s done a good job. She’s a very bright girl.”

“Just like her sister.” Tara said with the tiniest hint of a smile.

Willow laughed lightly and waved her hand.

“No. She’s just doing what she knew you would do if you could. She’s very taken with you, just like her sister.” Willow added with a smile.

Tara’s hint of a smile came back and she squeezed Willow’s hand again. Willow scooted down into the bed with her and Tara snuggled deep within her arms, allowing Willow’s steadily beating heart lull her back to sleep. Her last thoughts before she went back to sleep were of the next day, when she would finally get out of bed for the first time since her attack. She knew Willow would be glad that she tried even if she couldn’t get up for very long. If anything, it would soothe Willow’s nerves and allow her to see that Tara was trying to heal, not for herself but for the two sisters she had come to love so dearly.

As Tara’s breathing slowed to a steady pace, Willow vowed that no matter what it took, she would help Tara heal and get back to a normal life. She also made a pact with herself to never let another person harm her sister or her lover. She would die first before it ever happened again. Willow slowly drifted off to sleep, her dreams of Tara as sweet as ever.

Aww, Willow's so sweet, with the singing. It's nice that Willow gets to sing too, seeing as she's usually kind of tone deaf ;-) After all the sadness, it felt really nice to see Tara able to reach out to her for comfort. And it's just like her to have noticed Willow's injury too, but not make a big deal of it once she was sure Willow was being taken care of - she's so perceptive, and gentle in not making Willow talk to her about it while it was still fresh in her mind.
