okay.. yay, i'm so gald there's an update!!... but to get to the update i had to take a phone cord and jack my laptop up... i feel like i just kicked a puppy...Poor Kaylee...(yes my laptop is named Kaylee...and my car is named Amy...) Dial up is evil.

onto feedback! wonderful update, and i didn't cry.. for the record (that's a lie) the interactioni between the girls feels real in moments like these, and so the contact they take with each other seems natual, cause.. we humans are creatures who like comfort and take comfort in contact...and so it doesn't seem like they cross any boundries... which.. maybe it's just me.. but when i only just meet someone... and they start touching me.. i feel awkward and violated...unless i like said person. anywho, lovely update. and update soon please.

Candleshoe- I'm glad you're enjoying it.

WillowRulez- Well, we'll see what happens. I can't guarentee anything.

ShallowLikeUs- I hate dial up. I don't set out to make people cry, just so you know. I work to make things real. I hope I succeed at least somewhat.

Rose- Well, here's more for ya!

To everyone- I apologize for how short this update is... it was really hard to write. I hope the writing is good, even if there's not alot of it. And I'm having a bit of trouble, since I just broke up with my girl. We'd been together 1 year and 7 months. If updates are slow for a few days, that's why.

AN- This bit has a flashback that isn't marked and a flashback that is marked. The transition is rather easily distiguishable.

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

Tara entered her mother’s hospital room with a few flowers she had found in the backyard and thought her mama might like. She set them down on the table near the bed and sat on the edge. Her mama looked so old. Older than Tara had ever seen her. All of the lines in her face were more noticable when she was in a medically induced coma while she recovered from the operation.

“I met someone mama… I want you to meet her when you’re well enough. We’re not dating or anything… but she’s really special. Her name’s Willow. I told her about you… we watched the sunrise today. It was beautiful. You would’ve loved it… I love you, mama.”

She thought she saw her mother’s hand twitch, but couldn’t be sure, so she stayed in the room, talking to her mother about events in her life until the end of visiting hours, when she was asked to leave.

--

The day of the funeral dawned warm and bright. Had this outdoor occation been something other than the hell that it was, Tara might have found comfort in the warm hues rising on the horizon. But as it stood, she found no solace in the oranges and reds of the early morning hours. The actual funeral over, held the previous night, there was nothing left but the burial. Her confidant and best friend was going to be put into the ground. Tara didn’t like this one bit, but she found herself powerless to stop it, just as she had been powerless a week earlier. The day of death. She should have known it was coming… all the signs were there. But still, she had been surprised when she heard the news.

Flashback

Elenor entered her daughter’s room after getting off the phone with Joanie’s mother. Tara was scared the moment she saw the tears in her mother’s eye. “Mama?”

Elenor looked down at the floor for a moment, before going over to sit next Tara on her bed. “Tara… something’s happened. Joanie… she… Tara, Joanie killed herself last night.”

Tara swallowed hard, a quiet knowledge of Joanie’s death seeping into her blood. Tears welled in her eyes and began to form trails down her cheeks. When she spoke again, her voice was hoarse and she had to clear her throat to get it out properly. “How?”

“She… she hung herself.”

Those three words shattered Tara’s world completely. She felt numb. She didn’t feel it when her mother took her into her arms and held her; didn’t feel the tears on her cheeks. She didn’t know how long she had sat there, after her mother had gone, she just knew that eventually she fell into a dreamless sleep.

When Tara awoke the next morning, she still expected to be able to call Joanie. Wanted to pick up the phone and tell her love about the crazy dream she had. Except her mother looked so sad… so concerned. It was then she realized that her mother hadn’t gone at all, just moved to sit in the chair next to Tara’s bed when the girl must have asked her to leave.

The numbness shattered and tore into her soul. Her next sound was a heartwrenching sob, followed by another, and another. At some point her mother moved to holding her again. Safely cradled by Elenor, she sobbed for what felt like forever into her mother’s shoulder. Eventually the sobs subsided and she took a few deep breaths to steady herself. “Why, mama? Why Joanie?”

Elenor just held her daughter to her chest, not sure what to say to her daughter, and hating the lack of knowledge of what to do. “I don’t know, baby… I don’t know.”

End Flashback

There was no way she could bring the girl who met so much to her back. Nothing she could do to stop the corpse from rotting, and put the fire back into the eyes she loved so much. No, that wasn’t possible. Joanie was dead.

Hey, I still love you too, just haven't had a chance yet today to check updates.
That was tough to read. Definately brings back memories. The next update has to be happier or I'll have to go to the store to buy kleenex!

cbrymm- Here's the next post for ya! I'm really not much for biblical names. I decided on a name, though. Tara. My car is shy when accelerating, but once you get her sped up, shet's bold about staying that way. She'll also cradle me in her front and side airbags when I need her most.

will- Well... I can answer both of those. A bunch.

Candleshoe- Well, sorry if this is up a bit late, I've been having trouble with the story. It will get better, just give me some time.

Guppy- Yay! I am still loved. Sorry about posting that, I apparently got some of my mother's guilt tripping genes. Erg. Sorry, I hope too many people don't need excessive kleenex.

Here is the next update, everyone. Enjoy!

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

Monday afternoon, after school, Willow went immediately to the tech office and turned in her signed permission slip. After Lloyd gave her permission, she took the keys and went up to the lighting booth to wait for Tara.

After fifteen minutes of playing around on the computer, learning what different commands did, Willow found a way to completely automate a performance, using timers to change the lights. She found that she could break it down by act, scene or even line to get the computer to do exactly the right thing with the lights in correspondence to the actors’ position and line.

Tara entered the booth just as Willow was testing out the automated system with the actual stage lights, which led to angry protests from the techs trying to work on stage. She heard the screams and shouted threats and giggled slightly. “You might want to stop that, Willow. They’re not serious about the death threats, but they will burn your backpack to cinders.”

Willow turned off the program and turned to Tara with a smile. “I’m sorry… I just found a way to make our job easier. I can completely automate the lights so all we have to do for a certain command to work is push a key. It’s really simple to program once you hack into the lighting system. I-”

Tara held up a hand. “Wait… you hacked into the lighting system’s programs? Doesn’t that do damage to the program itself?”

Willow shook her head. “Not at all. I’m improving it, actually. The writer used an old coding system to make it. I’m going to upgrade it to make it work faster. If I just…” Willow continued to talk in computer language that was lost on Tara. All Tara heard were a few words, simple words she understood such as ‘but, and, or the’ anything more complex than that was lost as she watched the redhead’s lips move in a brilliantly lovely way. “you know?” Tara heard the words, they had ended one of Willow’s sentences. She knew what those words meant, but it took her a moment to realize that Willow had asked her a question. And an even longer moment to realize the girl had stopped talking.

“Uh, huh? Yeah.”

Willow looked at Tara oddly, wondering what she was thinking and why the blonde was looking at her that way. Tara’s eyes were wide, her mouth slightly open, and her expression unreadable. “Are… are you ok, Tara?”

Tara looked down, embarrassed at being caught staring and scared that Willow would know why she was looking at her. “I um…” I’m ok if it means stupid and completely obvious…

Willow didn’t give her a chance to put her foot in her mouth because her next question gave her a perfect escape. “Are you upset about your mom?”

The concern in Willow’s eyes and voice made lying impossible. But still… She was upset about her mom, that’s just not what caused the looks. She made a split second decision that it wasn’t lying simply because the redhead didn’t ask if she was staring because she was upset, and she nodded.

Willow nodded in reply. “How is she?”

Tara frowned and looked at the floor, not liking the sinking feeling that entered her stomach at having lied to Willow. “She’s still unconscious. She will be for a few days. They um… they found a blood clot in her brain.” After a long pause, she added. “They put her on blood thinners to try to clear it.”

Willow nodded again. “How are you?”

There’s that concern again…

Tara looked up at her, took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m ok. Scared and worried, but I’m ok.” And I’m lying. I’m not ok. I’m frightened out of my mind.

Willow moved from the chair she was in to sit next to Tara on the couch in the room. “I’m here for you. Whatever you need.”

Tara nodded and tentitively lay her head on Willow’s shoulder. “I didn’t get much sleep last night…”

Willow grinned, somewhat uncomfortable with the closeness, but wanting to be comforting. “Then take a nap… I don’t mind.”

Tara yawned. “Are you sure?”

After Willow’s nod and “I’m sure.” Tara closed her eyes and began to drift off to sleep.

Willow watched Tara sleep the best she could from her vantage point, and smiled as the girl snored softly and adorably. She noticed for what must have been the first time the soft delicate curves in her face, the way her lips quirked some as she spoke wordlessly, her soft breathing and the hand resting on her knee. I can’t believe I didn’t notice before how beautiful she is. She looks so peaceful…

The redhead continued to watch her until Lloyd came up to the booth and knocked on the door. “Girls? Is someone still up here?”

Willow jumped at the knock, since she had begun to fall asleep herself, startling Tara into wakefulness. “Hmm?”

“We’re here.” Willow yawned and stretched the best she could with Tara’s head on her shoulder.

Lloyd opened the door. “You two need to leave the school. I’m going home, and you can’t stay here overnight, especially when there’s no one else here.”

Tara sat up and opened her eyes. “Right… we need to go home.” She rubbed her eyes and yawned.

Willow glanced over at Tara, a little embarrassed at being found that way by the tech director of all people. “We’ll leave.”

The redhead stiffly stood up and picked up her backpack from where she had left it on the floor and walked to the door as Tara followed suit.

The girls walked partway home in silence before Tara spoke. “Thank you, Willow.”

Willow turned to look at her. “For what? All I did was let you sleep…”

Tara smiled and nodded. “I know… and you didn’t have to. You don’t have to be so nice to me…”

“I want to. You’re a nice girl, Tara… and I’m lucky to be your fri-… I mean, to know you.” Willow blushed slightly, they hadn’t said they were friends. She wasn’t really sure if they were, so she didn’t want to make Tara uncomfortable by labeling them that.

“We’re friends, Willow.” Tara smiled at her and Willow grinned.

“Ok.” She didn’t speak for the rest of the walk home. After a minute of silence, Willow took Tara’s hand and held it the rest of the way, neither girl willing to risk breaking the contact.

I wasn't having a go at you, I was just commenting on my love for this fic, and the fact that I am eager for the next bit :-D

And I liked this next bit - watching someone sleep is always such an intimate thing, and you caught that superbly.

I love it when Willow gets all with the computer-geek-fu! I always grin. And I love how you describe Tara's level of understanding, what with how she only understood words like "but and the or" cause it's a cute way to decribe it. and I'm groggy. And I missed one update, so i shall comment on that too. It was incredibly sad, though, it's a subject that hits too close to home for me, so maybe it wasn't as sad as i thought it was, but it was sad to me cause of the memories it sparked. I dunno.

I have a car. 97 Honda Accord. Her name is Amy. Amy and I were in a car accident last night. Amy needs to be painted on the front now... and she keeps making strange noises when I drive. It scares me. She's named after the song "Don't Hate Me" by The Get Up Kids...cause i really like the name Amy... it's pretty...

Well, off to class, and then I shall be waiting by the phone. My Mom is going into surgery today. She's getting her gallbladder removed. and she was supposed to fly down to Florida to see me on wednesday, cause next week is spring break...and next monday is my birthday.. and she was gunna come see me and so was my big brother.. and we were gunna stay at my nana's house... but.. not anymore.. cause.. emergency gallbladder removal surgery.. *sigh* another birthday alone.

Great two updates. I look forward to more. oh and! :flower <- for you, what with the girl issue and all.

Have a splediferous day!

writerfreak- Yup. Willow was made for tech crew.

Candleshoe- I tend to phrase things wrong. I was not trying to imply that a go was being had, just that I was sorry for posting it so late, because I was. Hopefully the next bit will be up sooner. And I like watching people sleep. I got the distinct pleasure of watching my crush sleep after prom once... beautiful girl. Wish I coulda dated her... oh well.

ShallowLikeUs- Hope your mom gets better soon. I know how worrying surgery can be. It's always scary. Hang in there. A birthday, huh? I'm not saying it's going to happen, but maybe... just MAYBE there'll be something special on Monday. We'll see. ;) And thank you. That's the first flower anyone's ever given me.

The next bit will be up earlier than last night, since I'm making a music vid and I'm downloading plenty of inspiration.

Oh, I missed the update(s)! Cute as usual! I admit, for a second there I thought her mom had already died. But everything is (still) goodie! Willow's geek babbles are too adorable, especially that she didnt notice Tara's reaction for what it was. :applause

Hey,
Sorry I've been lax with the feedback but I just caught up with this tale and am intrigued it is tinged with the variant shades of gray which color our daily existence.
I really have enjoyed catching up and think that it is a creative variation to put Willow and Tara into a confined space i.e, the lighting booth and let their proximity work its healing ways.
No matter what the variation some aspects remain constant.
Each of the girls senses an immediate attraction to the other but through reticence or bad memories is hesitant to discuss or do a big reveal to the other about their feelings.
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.

WillowRulez- Willow is fun to write. She's oblivious to relationship things, sometimes, which is extremely amusing to me, since I am also.

taralicious- I am honestly not quite sure how to take that. I mean, part of it was positive, but I don't particularly like the constant aspects. I am seeing this currently as Tara has an attraction and admits it, but Willow
1. Thinks Tara is dating Xander (which people seem to be forgetting)
and 2. Willow has not admitted or really sensed an attraction. I happen to rather dislike the immediate attraction thing, because I don't think it really happens that way, except for the purely physical. Willow does have a physical attraction to Tara, but it's more of a wanting to be near her than a crush. Wanting to be near someone can be purely platonic, so that is all there is between them at this point.
Tara always senses the attraction first, that I will admit to, because Tara is always the one that was openly gay first. I think that is something that will be constant.
I have always found close proximity to someone to be the best way to get to know them. I like the opportunity I had here.
And I'm sorry if that came out in an offensive way. I don't mean it to be, I just get a little touchy about my work. I'm sure that wasn't really meant as criticism, but I felt I should explain why it is that way anyways.

To everyone- I apologize for the slowness of the next update, but I want it to be a happy one. I have not exactly been in the best place for writing recently, because of bad events in my personal life. It will be up by the end of the week, depending on when I get the time to write it. Sorry about that...

I just read all of this thus far and I must say I love it! The whole setting reminds me of my high school and the seperation of techies and actors (I did both though- like Buffy, lol). I can't wait to read more! :bounce

Candleshoe- I wish that too... I mean, nowhere else would I be able to do half the things these girls will. Oh well... I'm mostly better. Thanks.

WillowTaraGaiden- Expect differences... the one thing I hope is that the people who have the technical knowhow of the techies won't be too annoyed with the things I get wrong in how things work. As I have said before, I was originally planning to make them both actors, since that is the element I am most familiar with. But the plot got a mind of it's own and switched on me. I have the utmost respect for you, because I know that being an actor takes alot of work, and that being a techie does. To be able to do both takes superhuman abilities. Good job! Also, if you notice something that is wrong, please PM me and I will fix it in that part of the story. If it's wrong on a MAJOR level, I really need to know so I don't continue the story assuming I'm doing it right. Thanks!

To everyone- GOOD NEWS! I am now the proud owner of a provisional driver's license. I am legally able to drive! I can take Tara out by myself! This had led to insane happyness and the planning for another chapter, which should be up at some point either tonight or tommorrow.

Ok, I'm sorry about how short this chapter is, but I need to save something for Monday. That update will be super special because of a certain reader's birthday that I want to do something for. So enjoy this update, I promise Monday's will be better. It'll prolly go up Sunday night, around midnight or 1 US east coast time. I've been working on it for quite awhile, hence the lack of other updates. So um, here's an update.

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

There was a soft knock on her door, and Tara answered it quickly to see her date standing on the other side.

Willow wore a soft green dress, her long red hair up in a bun a few inches above her neck. She looked more radiant than Tara had ever seen her, and all the blonde wanted to do was touch her forever. But she couldn’t yet. They were going to prom together without her father or brother knowing that they were together. That would be the most difficult part… hiding it. Tara stepped over the threshold and onto the porch as she pulled the door shut behind her. She herself was wearing a dark blue dress with light blue accents bordering most of her curves. She was sure that she didn’t look very good in that dress… she never looked good in her own eyes, but the look in Willow’s eyes as she looked at her made her believe that she actually was somewhat pretty.

Willow smiled at her as they moved toward the redhead’s car. When did Willow get a car? Tara wondered silently. But she didn’t mind. She rather liked the idea of riding with only Willow to their senior prom. They seemed to get to the dance in no time at all, which surprised Tara, but it also didn’t seem odd in the least. It seemed like the ride was supposed to take five seconds. Funny, it had always seemed longer before.

They danced for hours, enjoying the feel of eachother, and also, to a much lesser extent, the looks they were being given by some of the envious boys of the school.

Tara had never been this happy. She wanted the elated feel in her stomach to stay there forever. And her heart swelled when she heard Willow whisper in her ear “I love you.”

She could barely believe that she heard her say that. “I love you, Willow.” Tara kissed Willow carefully, knowing that if she didn’t do it now, she’d lose the nerve. This was her prom, after all, and she had hoped that Willow would want to kiss her for the first time tonight. A confession of love before the first kiss wasn’t something she wanted to dwell on, as long as the words were true. They had to be… she trusted Willow implicitly, and she knew exactly where her own feelings stood.

It was towards the end of the night, she could tell by the dwindling crowd on the dance floor. She didn’t care. All she cared about in this moment was the redhead’s lips on her’s and Willow’s body pressed against her own. She felt her deepen the kiss as they swayed slowly to the music. Right now all that mattered was them. They didn’t even notice the looks people were giving them, and soon there were no looks at all because they weren’t in the gym, or even the school, anymore.

The music was gone and the room they were in was silent. They didn’t seem to notice the change in environment or the bed in the center of the room, though they were aware in some strange intuitive way that it existed and they knew exactly where in the room it was. They fell upon it silently, seeming to have not moved at all from where they were, even though the bed was on the other side of the room from where they had been only a moment before. The only sounds in the room were soft moans as the kiss they were sharing continued to escalate.

Tara ran her tongue over Willow’s lips, begging entrance to what lay beyond. Once it was granted, they moaned together at the pleasure it gave them. Suddenly they were no longer wearing their dresses, and skin moved against skin as they touched and licked and kissed everywhere available to them. They came together, in the same breath…

Tara awoke with a start. She was breathing heavily and she found that there was a throbbing between her legs that she was mostly unaccustomed to. She knew exactly what it meant, she wasn’t naïve, but she was scared of the implications that this feeling, coupled with the dream, held about her feelings for Willow.

“I love you, Willow”

Did that really mean…?

How could I love someone so soon after meeting her? Doesn’t that mean that it’s just a crush, or a fixation? Real love doesn’t happen that way, Tara reasoned. But it felt so real… Like I was actually there with her, in her arms, touching her and kissing her… I could feel it.

Tara knew sleep would not come for her tonight.

For a second there I actually thought: Hm..? Did I miss something? How did the last update end again? Hehe, but then 'click', a few sentences later: Oh no, it's a dream right'... and what a dream it was :x

so at first i was all "wait a minute! what happened to the you know, rest of the time! when did it become prom!?" then i was like "oooh, it's a tricky thing... " i hate it when writers do that! *looks about waiting to be struck by lightning.* (cause I've -never- done that before...[only..that's sarcasm...cause it's one of my favorite things to do..])

So, you shouldn't have told us it was a dream at the end.. that should have been like.. the first line of the next update.. cause.. i think it would have been funny. but, very nice update, i like the point that's brought up, about being able to fall in love so soon. is it love or infatuation? is it real, or is it just a dream? ah, such questions that can only be answered by oneself, and if one isn't honest with themself, then, well... things can get royally screwed up royally fast.

so yay. i like updates. and.. uh.. keep updating!

ooh, that was clever! And sneaky...

It was Willow having a car that gave it away for me, my dreams always work out the kinks as they go along too...

I mean the problems work out, obviously - the kink factor isn't always there...

Anyway, I liked this short but sweet update, and I am looking forward to the next :-D

Hey MM
this is my first feedback on your story - I just read it today. It's a good story, and I'm enjoying it v. much.

I'm kinda curious about a couple of things: Willow's friend Polly came out to her, but you've never said (I don't think) whether Willow is gay or not (or realises it... whatever); were she & Polly gf; why did Joanie commit suicide; when is Willow gonna realise that Xander and Tara are not a couple???????

I'm also amazed at how much you've written in such a short time: you must take the record for fastest updates ever! Not complaining, mind you, I love it.

Looking forward to more. I hope Tara doesn't lose her mum.

WillowRulez- Glad you liked it. I've had a bit of trouble with the sexy parts, I'm not sure if I'll ever do them right.

ShallowLikeUs- I wanted this to actually have some progression in the plot and not just be a random bit of smut to confuse everyone with. Not that that even comes close to being smut, but still. I really wanted that one important question to come up for Tara, so it did. Luckily, it seemed to work out pretty well.

Candleshoe- I tried to make it as dreamlike as possible without making it completely lose touch with reality, so Tara couldn't just shrug it off as an odd dream. It was important that she be a bit confused by elements that weren't central to what was happening in the dream and not by Willow acting weird or something.

SSSK- Anya will make an appearence, but I really think these two can figure everything out on their own. Anya will be a somewhat secondary character. Not one of the main ones you will see alot.

spells42- I'm glad you like the story. As to your curiousity, Polly and Willow's relationship is explained in the first chapter. It is said. And as to Willow's sexuality, it isn't stated because Willow isn't even sure. Joanie will be brought up in a later chapter, explaining everything. And Willow'll find out soon enough, believe me. I think that's everything. Fast updates are important. I know I've been slipping, but I'm trying to get back up to at least 3 a week. As I said, the next one will be up tommorrow.

To everyone: I've noticed a few of you so far have called me MM. I figure I'll make it less confusing and give a name to be called by rather than the initials of my screen name. My name is Sara. You can still call me MM if you wish, I just find actual names easier.

The update will be up tommorrow, it's already half written. This will be a long one, folks.

writerfreak- Here I was, thinking I wouldn't need to reply to any feedback before I posted this chapter, but there you go... ruining all my fun... ;-) Just kidding. Thanks for the feedback! Here's more to reply to!

To everyone: This chapter is dedicated to ShallowLikeUs for the occation of her birthday. I hope it went well, sweetie.

And now, the chapter.

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

Willow’s school day had been uneventful thus far, which she was expecting, and hoping, to be a trend. She was perfectly fine with the uneventful days, since those days meant nothing bad happened. She was happy about the lack of bad, until she turned the corner into the drama hall at the beginning of lunch, and an event happened.

“Oh no… Tara…” Her face went pale and she dropped her bag. The sight before her worried her beyond anything she had felt since the move. There, in the far right corner of the hall, was Xander kissing some brunette that Willow didn’t recognise. They apparently didn’t notice her, because the brunette was slowly running her hand down towards Xander’s pants. Willow turned away, not wanting to see any more.

She turned back out of the drama hall, trying to clear her head. She stood against a wall, trying to figure out what she could possibly do. She decided that chocolate was in order, so she walked to the nearest vending machine. She bought two chocolate bars, planning to keep one for herself and give the other to Tara when she next saw her, hoping the small gesture could ease the pain even just a little bit. She took her change from the machine and walked away. When she reached down to put the chocolate in her bag, she realized she had left it in the drama hall, and went back to retrieve it.

She crept down the hall carefully, not wanting Xander and the skank he was with to see or hear her. She was also careful not to look up so she wouldn’t have to see them. She failed at keeping her eyes downcast after she picked up her bag, and when she looked up, she felt a sudden wave of anger coupled with a vague nausea in the pit of her stomach.

Her first instinct was to inflict bodily harm onto Xander for what he surely must be doing to Tara, but she swollowed that and settled for going around the corner, picking up an empty milk carton, throwing it at them, and running. She didn’t stick around long enough to know that she missed hitting them, but that didn’t really matter. At least now she had done something. While that something may not have actually helped, she felt like she had at least enacted a small amount of vengence on Tara’s behalf.

Willow went to class and was completely unable to concentrate. Most of her was bothered by what Xander was doing to Tara, but the rest of her was preoccupied with why it was she cared so much. She tried to tell herself that it was just because she cared a lot about Tara’s friendship, but a small voice in the back of her mind kept telling her that it was more than that. She knew that she felt more drawn to Tara than to anyone else she’d met so far, but she didn’t quite know why or what that meant about her feelings toward the girl. She figured the draw was because she recognised something of herself in Tara- the shyness and the unease about themselves they had in common. But there was something more; and Willow’s mind would not let her concentrate until she figured out exactly what that something more was.

By the end of the school day Willow had come to the conclusion that she was attracted to Tara. Attracted in a somewhat more than friendly way. It surprised her just how ok with that she was. She had always figured that something like that would freak her out, but here she was, admitting to herself her attraction to a girl, and feeling completely alright with it. And what surprised her even more was that it seemed perfectly natural. She had always thought that girls that liked girls always felt different in what they liked. Now, here she was, liking another girl and having it feel normal. Right even. She was almost happy about it, until she remembered what had caused her to go on this thought path in the first place. Xander.

She got backstage and began climbing to the lighting booth in record time, eager to see if Tara was alright. Of course she’s not alright. She’s either been cheated on or dumped. Or both! That thought made her run up the stairs even faster and when she got to the top she practically rammed the door open, barely bothering to turn the knob.

The sight that greeted her when the door was opened was a startled Tara looking up at her in surprise from the couch. Suddenly she forgot why exactly it was that she felt the need to barge in here that way, when she saw the look of slight fear in Tara’s eyes. Willow frowned and put down her bag. “Uh… Sorry I scared you.”

Tara noticed the worried look in the redhead’s eyes and stood up and began walking over toward her. “Are you alright? Did something happen?”

Willow frowned. She doesn’t know… She was silent for a moment, debating whether to tell her the bad news or not. “Tara, I um… You might want to sit down.”

Tara sat down, now more worried that something had happened. “What’s wrong?”

Willow sat next to her. “Today… I saw…” She took a deep breath. “I saw Xander kissing another girl.”

Tara was confused for a moment, then she realized what must be happening. Willow has a crush on Xander… Of course she does. She’s straight, he’s a nice guy… why wouldn’t she like him? She put a hand on Willow’s knee. “I’m sorry… I should’ve told you he has a girlfriend.”

Willow looked at Tara, her face going from worried to confused. “Wait, What? He has a… Tara, I thought you were dating him.”

Tara almost laughed at the idea, but kept the amusement in check because Willow seemed so upset. “No… we’re just good friends. Willow, I prefer women.”

Willow’s eyes went wide and she suddenly had a million thoughts running through her head at once, all of them culminating in Tara likes girls. Girls of the female persuation. She likes girls. I’m a girl… maybe there’s a chance she’d like me? Willow’s face broke into a broad grin. “Oh.”

Tara smiled at Willow’s grin. “Oh what?”

Willow looked up at Tara from her dazed stare at the computer. “Oh… you like girls. I mean, you’re all with the liking of girls and the not liking of Xander, which makes his kissing his girlfriend not a problem, which means you’re not upset, which means you don’t really need the chocolate I brought you, but do you want it anyway?”

Tara blinked slightly, then caught up with what Willow said and smiled. “You brought me chocolate?”

Willow nodded and got the bar out of the bag pocket she had placed it in earlier and handed it to Tara. “Here.”

Tara’s smile broaded as she took the chocolate. “Thank you Willow… This was really thoughtful of you.”

Willow smiled a toothy grin and nodded slightly. “Well, you’re welcome. I thought you’d like it…”

After two hours of sitting in the lighting booth, actually working on the lighting for the upcoming show, the girls were ready to go home. They cleaned up the booth together, then each grabbed their bags.

They walked single file down the steps, Tara in front, and Willow fell into step beside her as they exited the school. Willow walked next to Tara, looking around at everything but her. “So um, Tara?”

Tara turned to look at her, smiling. “Willow?”

Willow smiled and looked down at her feet, then back at Tara. “Can I walk you home?”

Tara looked around and laughed slightly. “We’re already walking… I suppose I wouldn’t object to you walking all the way to my house…”

Willow grinned and hesitated a moment before reaching down and taking Tara’s hand in her own.

Tara squeezed Willow’s hand as Willow began to swing their arms.

They continued like that, unconsciously stepping in the exact same rhythm, their feet and arms perfectly in sync, until they arrived at Tara’s house.

Tara smiled wide, turning to Willow. “Thank you for escorting me home.”

Willow smiled. “You’re very welcome.”

Tara knew she should move to go inside, but she just stood there, looking into Willow’s eyes and holding Willow’s hand. “I um, I better get inside.”

Willow nodded and reluctantly dropped Tara’s hand. “I’ll see you tommorrow.”

Tara nodded. “Right… see you tommorrow.”

They stood looking at eachother still, and Tara was about to turn to go into her house when Willow’s arms wrapped around her neck and she felt herself being pulled into a hug. She smiled wide and wrapped her own arms around Willow, squeezing the girl slightly.

Both girls held the hug for a little too long before pulling back and smiling shyly at one another. Tara was the first to speak after the hug. “Uh… Bye Willow.”

She turned and almost ran into her house, awkwardly struggling with the doorknob on the way in.

Willow smiled and hummed offkey to herself all the way home.
