Part 4
Willow sat on one of the sofas, absently tapping her finger on the arm as she waited for the meeting to start. She looked around at the group of girls talking excitedly about brownies, chocolate chip cookies and lemon bundts. She sure hoped they’d drop that entire topic when the meeting started so they could talk about spells and stuff.
Tara rushed into the building, running late for the meeting. It looked pretty full and there weren’t any chairs left to sit on. She was about to find a spot on the floor when she caught site of familiar auburn locks. Could Willow really be here? Making her way closer to the back of the sofa, Tara was close enough to tell it was indeed Willow sitting on the sofa by herself. She leaned over and whispered in the redhead’s ear. “Is this seat taken?”
Willow felt a full body shiver. There was only one person that could do that to her. “Tara,” she breathed as she turned to see blue eyes twinkling at her. Tara was still bent over the couch, her lips just inches away from Willow’s. The redhead gulped loudly and motioned for Tara to sit next to her.
Tara smiled and moved around next to Willow, sitting just a few inches from the redhead. The meeting hadn’t started just yet so she leaned over to whisper to Willow, “I like your skirt.”
Willow looked down at her long blue jean skirt. There wasn’t really anything special about it, except it had an embroidered rose on the front on left side, the side facing Tara. Willow shifted slightly to smile at the blonde.
Tara didn’t know what possessed her to do it, but she used her index finger to trace the rose. Starting at the base of the stem on Willow’s knee, she slowly followed its winding path up the redhead’s thigh. Her gaze was fixed on her finger, seemingly entranced by its movement and the course it was taking.
Willow held her breath as she watched Tara make her way further and further up her leg. The blossom of the rose was spread across her thigh and she wondered how far Tara would go, what she would do when she reached the petals.
Before Tara realized what was happening, she was definitely venturing towards naughty touching. Knowing she couldn’t just whip her hand back without drawing attention to them, she slowly traced the outline of the petals, until she was back to the stem. She followed the stem’s path, a little quicker this time, until she reached the end on Willow’s knee. She looked up at the redhead through heavy lashes and whispered, “Beautiful.” She gave her knee a little squeeze then pulled her hand back into her lap.
Willow finally released her breath, letting it out in one long whoosh. She knew there was no way she’d be paying attention to the meeting.

“That’s so funny that we were both going to the same meeting, I mean it was like fate or something. And how long have you been practicing?” Willow didn’t even pause she was in full babble mode. “I haven’t been practicing long, and I really was hoping to find someone to kinda help teach me… and Oh! If you wouldn’t mind maybe you could teach me, or we could learn together, but you don’t have to, ‘cause I don’t want to be like pushy-girl monopolizing all your time and keeping you from your other friends and study groups. What kind of things do you like to do? I mean besides the Wicca group and going out for coffee and-”
“Willow.” Tara couldn’t believe the one word actually stopped the redhead. She had been going non-stop since they had left the Wicca meeting. They had been walking really slowly while Willow babbled. What was normally a five-minute walk had stretched to fifteen. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. She really hated to stop her new friend; she was just so cute when she did this.
“Um, yeah?” What had they been talking about? For some reason, Willow couldn’t seem to remember.
“Um, maybe we should skip the coffee.” As Willow’s face fell, Tara hurried to reassure her. “I mean, maybe you c-could, um, come back to my d-dorm and I could sh-show you some of my spell books instead. Um… if you w-want to that is or we c-could do it another time.”
Willow’s face lit up at the thought of spending some more time alone with Tara. But was alone good? Would she be able to control her feelings, being alone with this beautiful woman? The real question was… Did she even want to?
*****
It didn’t seem possible but when they entered Tara’s dorm, Willow’s smile got even wider as she looked around the room. Tiny fairy lights twinkled along the walls. A bookcase overflowed with magic books and various supplies. Candles, obviously unlit, decorated any spare surface space.
“Wow, Tara. This is beautiful. It’s like we’re not even in a dorm room.”
“Th-thanks.” Tara tilted her head forward, letting her hair cover her crimson cheeks. Up until now she had been confident, at least confident for her, with Willow. Now her insecurities seemed to be flooding to the forefront.
“So, did you want to try a spell? I mean I know you said about looking at your books and I really want to but I was thinking maybe just a little spell, to sorta get us started?” she ended hopefully.
Tara couldn’t help but smile at the redhead’s enthusiasm. “Um, s-sure.” She furrowed her brow, trying to think of a good spell for them to do, that she had everything she needed for in her room.
Willow watched Tara’s face as she concentrated. It seemed as if the blonde was sifting through ideas and dismissing them, one by one until finally she spoke.
“I th-think I have just the thing for our, uh first spell together.” Tara smiled and began moving around the room, picking up candles and a couple other supplies.
Willow watched as Tara moved gracefully about the room. She should have offered to help but she was too lost in admiring the blonde witch.
Tara finished the preparation and turned to Willow, inviting the redhead to join her on the floor.
Willow moved wordlessly to sit in front of Tara. She listened intently as her friend explained the spell.
“The fairy l-lights sorta gave me the idea. We’ll say this incantation,” she pushed the book towards Willow so the redhead could take a look. She took a small bowl with green colored sand and placed it between them. “The sand will begin to glow. By focusing and concentrating together, we’ll manipulate the sand into different shapes. It’ll be two-dimensional shapes, not three-dimensional. Okay?”
Willow finished looking over the spell and nodded. “Got it. Ready?”
Tara smiled at her friend then settled in. She held out her hands for Willow to grasp.
Willow stretched out her hands and gently clasped Tara’s overtop the bowl of sand. There was an instant connection between them. Was it just magical? Was Willow the only one that felt it, or was she just projecting something there because she wanted it to be there? Shaking the thoughts from her head she smiled at Tara, letting her know she was ready.
Tara nodded to signal Willow she was starting the incantation. As their words filled the air, each grain of sand inside the bowl began to glow, each it’s own twinkling green light. With the next few spoken commands, the sparkling granules began floating upwards from the bowl until they hovered at eye level between the two witches.
Tara smiled over at Willow as they ended their incantation. “Now, if we focus our energy, we should be able to manipulate the sand into shapes. We should probably start off simple… maybe a circle?”
Willow nodded. “So we both think of a circle, right? And then it should take the shape?”
Tara smiled. “Exactly. Ready?”
Willow nodded eagerly and both girls focused on the shape of a circle. Almost immediately, a glowing circle formed.
“How about a star?” Tara asked. At Willow’s nod, they concentrated and the glowing sand morphed from a circle to a perfectly shaped star. “You can pick the next shape, Willow.”
Willow’s heart fluttered when Tara spoke her name so the first shape she thought of was, “Heart.” She was rewarded with a lopsided grin from Tara and they were easily able to form a heart. As Willow looked into Tara’s eyes, she felt her love for the blue-eyed goddess shining through; which reflected into their spell, causing the heart they had created to glow brightly.
“I th-think maybe this is a little too easy for both of us. We’ll keep our hands linked but maybe we should try more difficult, um shapes, and uh, maybe just one of us at a time… okay?”
“Oh! Like a, a butterfly?” As soon as Willow said it, she began imagining a little butterfly and the sand once again changed shape to match her thoughts, a butterfly flapping it’s wings, hovering in the space between them.
Tara giggled. “Yeah, I think you got it.” An idea hit her, “Um, keep concentrating on your butterfly, while I try something, okay?” At Willow’s nod, Tara began to focus. She carefully separated part of the sand.
Willow was able to continue modifying her vision so that her butterfly remained intact, but shrunk just a bit.
Tara had to try really hard to suppress a giggle as she began shaping her part of the sand. Pretty soon a small kitty took shape next to the butterfly. Once it had form, Tara began to make the kitty “chase” the butterfly. As the butterfly flapped in place, the small kitten appeared to run in place and jump at it, it’s tiny paws swatting the air and never quite reaching it’s destination.
Willow laughed at the kitten’s antics. Her love for her friend grew by the second. The redhead was staring at Tara, memorizing ever little detail; the way one side of her mouth curled up into that lopsided smile, how her hair would fall forward to cover her blushing cheeks… Willow didn’t realize how hard she had been staring at Tara until the sand began to shift again.
Tara watched as the sand began to alter and take shape, having no idea what the redhead was up to. Her eyes opened wide as she looked at a glowing rendition of herself. Not realizing it, she let go of the redhead’s hands and just stared at the new form.
Willow gulped as she felt Tara’s hands drop her own. She focused on her vision of Tara, watched it give a lopsided smile as her hair blew gently about her face. She watched as eyelashes blinked slowly and she hoped with all she was that the real Tara wouldn’t be upset with her. Willow watched as the sand grew brightly and then, poof! It disappeared. She looked up slowly, afraid of seeing the disgust written on Tara’s face.
Tara just stared at Willow for an agonizing moment. What did that mean? Why had Willow turned the sand into a picture of her? Maybe it didn’t mean anything, maybe the blonde was reading too much into it and Willow was just getting into the spell. Deciding she better not try to overanalyze it, she smiled. “Um. I guess that’s the, uh end of the s-spell. Whatcha wanna do n-now?”
Willow let out a sigh of relief. Tara didn’t hate her. She didn’t know about Willow’s feeling for her, but at least the blonde didn’t hate her. She smiled and helped Tara clean up the items from the spell.
*****
They stayed up all night talking, laughing and looking through spell books. When the clock read five o’clock, Willow decided it would be best to head back to her dorm room and try to catch a couple hours of sleep before class. She had such a wonderful time she didn’t even think twice as she stood at Tara’s door. She pulled the blonde witch into an embrace, holding her for a several seconds, before turning her head and placing a kiss on the blonde’s cheek. “Thank you for a wonderful evening, Tara.”
Tara just smiled, and then impulsively leaned in to kiss Willow’s cheek in return. She pulled back, eyes sparkling as she looked at her friend. “I had a wonderful time, too, Willow. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Um… actually I guess later today…” Willow giggled. She figured she better get going before she said or did anything that might get her in trouble. She opened the door, stepping through it backwards, her eyes still locked on Tara’s. She lifted her hand in a little wave, and then reluctantly turned to walk down the hallway. Just before she turned the corner, she looked back. She smiled as Tara waved at her. She gave another little wave then skipped down the steps.
