I like this fic a lot :D It makes sense that someone would want to investigate the weird things that happen in Sunnydale...the only person to really notice Buffy being around when all the strangeness happens was Snyder and well, we all know what happened to him :p hehe. Hopefully being under the same roof will help mend things between W/T...it's cool to see Dawn being all determined to get them back together :)

Barnabasvamp- I’m a big Dawn fan, I really liked the character and to me she was just another character who was abused in the sixth season so you could say this is the way I see the Dawnster.

Mollyig-yeah the FBI has underestimated Tara but they are a pair of smart cookies so they won’t be easily got rid.

Grimaldi- Dawn just wants to see her surrogate parents together; very understandable really.

Hey Beth, hi sweetie, well I wish I had more days to have off so I could escape from the bimbo.:lol Thank you once again for all your hard work. :grin

Pikescoob- poor old Snyder still miss him:evil . Being under the same roof will be hard to start with but Dawn is very determined.

Title: Closing Ranks part 3

Author: Magrat

Spoilers: as before.

Ratings: PG: 13

Tara woke with a start, soaked in sweat. The nightmare, again. She was beginning to believe that she would never have a decent night’s sleep. She checked the bedside clock 6.30 a.m.; she had been awake on the hour every hour of what had been a long restless night.

It didn’t help that she was sleeping in someone else’s bed or that she was worried about FBI wanting to talk to her and she still felt guilty at the way she had talked to Willow the night before. Willow was just trying to help; she didn’t deserve to take the brunt of Tara’s frustrations and fears. What is it they say, ‘you always hurt the one you…’ don’t even go there thought Tara.

**********************

Sandra banged on James’s motel door. “Come on up and at ‘em. Time to be out hunting construction workers,”

He came to the door dressed in just a towel. “Hey, give me a minute. I was just in the shower.”

“I’ll meet you in the coffee shop we were in the other day. No time for laziness,” said Sandra grinning at her partner.

He shook his head and went back in the room to quickly get dressed.

****************************

Willow entered the kitchen her nose twitching. “Tell me that’s Tara making the pancakes and not Buffy.”

“Is there something wrong with Buffy’s pancakes?” Asked Tara turning to face Willow.

“No, just not as good as yours,” said Willow.

“Will, I’m sorry about last night. I know you were just trying to help. You didn’t deserve that and I am sorry,” said Tara.

Willow looked into Tara’s eyes; she took in the drawn features and black rings under her eyes. “Don’t worry about it. You’re under a lot of stress. Are you okay?” the redhead started to reach forward to brush an errant blonde hair from Tara’s face but stopped herself, snatching her hand back to her side.

Tara cleared her throat, noting Willow’s movement, feeling suddenly awkward. She turned away unable to look Willow in the eye, it was just too painful.

Willow watched Tara trying to mute her feelings, but the blonde witch’s expressive face couldn’t hide the pain she was feeling. Willow wanted to hold her, comfort her, and tell her that everything would be okay. Maybe she should just ask Tara if she could help.

“I smell Tara pancakes,” said Dawn entering the kitchen then cursing herself for not realizing that Willow and Tara were alone.

“You can’t tell me my pancakes smell different from anyone else’s,” said Tara forcing a smile at Dawn.

“They do,” said the teenager trying to lift the mood. “You must have a special ingredient.”

Willow quietly slipped out of the kitchen. She went and sat down on the sofa and buried her head in her hands.

“What’s wrong?” Asked Buffy who had quietly followed her friend into the room from the stairs.

Willow looked up, her eyes full of tears. “I can’t take this Buffy; being so close to her but not being able to…I had to stop myself from touching her.”

“Touching her?” Asked Buffy her eyebrow’s raised in surprise.

“Not like that”, said Willow catching the inflection in Buffy’s voice and the look on the her face. “I just meant…Tara looked so tired. I wanted to run my hand through her hair, stroke her cheek, comfort her, but I can’t, she’s not mine to do that with anymore.”

“She’s not,” agreed Buffy feeling Willow’s pain. It has always amazed her how tactile these two shy, young women had been. Constantly touching, squeezing one another’s hands, stroking fingers through hair. She couldn’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be for Willow to give that up. “But I’m sure if you show her how much…”

“Yes, I know but I screwed up so badly and,” said Willow taking a huge breath before carrying on. “Dawn told me Tara’s been having the nightmares again.”

“Nightmares?” Asked Buffy confused.

“Oh,” said Willow realizing. “It was when you were…you know…?”

“Dead,” said the slayer. “It’s okay Will, just explain.”

“When I managed to reverse what Glory had done to her. She kept having nightmares about the attack. After a few months they stopped, but now they’ve come back,” said Willow and then holding Buffy’s gaze. “Because of me.”

“No, Will…” said Buffy starting to protest.

“Buffy, it’s obviously because of me. I played with her mind, it was bound to affect her,” said Willow desperately trying to stop the tears from coming in floods.

“Do you want me to talk to Tara about it?” Asked Buffy.

“No, I don’t want her thinking that I’m trying to interfere,” said Willow softly shaking her head.

Xander’s entering the house interrupted them. “Am I missing something?” Asked the young man looking concerned.

“No, we’re good,” said Buffy.

Willow turned away from her friends for a moment trying to pull herself together. She didn’t want Xander to see her upset.

“Hey, there’s lots of yummy pancakes in the kitchen,” said Dawn coming out at the sound of Xander’s voice. “Tara made them.”

Buffy gave Willow’s shoulders a gentle squeeze as she turned from Dawn and Xander.

“Whoa, Tara made pancakes,” said Xander. “Point me in the direction ‘cause hard working construction workers have to eat. Dawn do you want a ride to school, after breakfast?”

“Sure I’ll get my bag,” said Dawn.

***********************

Xander studied the blueprint in front of him, something wasn’t quite right but he couldn’t put his finger on it.

“Hey, Harris,” said the site boss walking towards him. “There are some people here to see you.”

“Who?” Asked Xander looking puzzled.

“Feds,” said his boss. “I hope you haven’t been up to anything.”

“I haven’t,” said Xander turning pale.

“You better not have. They’re in my office.”

“Thanks,” said Xander.

**********************

“How do you want to play this?” asked James.

“Why don’t we just play it by ear,” said Sandra. “See how he reacts; I mean his girlfriend is a little strange.”

“Xander knocked on the door. He moved into the room with real trepidation but determined not show it.

Sandra stood and offered her hand to the young man. “Hello, Mr. Harris, I’m Special Agent Davidson and this is…”

“I know who you are,” said Xander.

“How about taking a seat?” Asked James pointing to one of the chairs across from him.

Xander sat in the chair next to it, his stomach churning. He knew this interview was coming, he had hoped it would be later rather than sooner.

“Well then I guess we can skip the formalities. Well, you know why were are here then,” said James. He looked across at Sandra who nodded her head slightly letting him know she was happy for him to carry on the questioning.

“Not really,” said Xander. “All you seem to be doing is harassing innocent people.”

“Innocent,” repeated James. “Hmm depends on your definition of innocent. My colleague here had a look at the findings of Dr Jacobs’s autopsy.”

“Who?” Asked Xander genuinely puzzled.

“Ben,” stated James.

Xander didn’t say anything. He could feel his heart hammering as he tried to figure out what they could possibly know.

“As I said my colleague was surprised at the cause of death being listed as injuries resulting from a fall. She said the findings and the photos of the body, indicated there was evidence pointing to him being suffocated in some way,” said James.

S-suffocated,” stammered Xander. “I don’t understand.”

James closed his eyes for a second, seeing the argument Sandra had had with the pathologist over his findings and how infuriated she had been with his attitude. He told them there were so many sudden deaths in Sunnydale that he didn’t have time to look for complications. He snapped back into the present.

“Someone killed him,” snapped James.

Xander squared his shoulders and met the other man’s eyes almost insolently. “Are you arresting me?”

James ignored the question. “How did you feel when Ms Maclay was attacked?”

“Feel?” questioned Xander. “Numb, how do you think I’d feel? She was a friend.”

“Was?” Asked James.

“Is,” said Xander. “She is.”

“Why did she move out of the Summer’s house?” Asked Sandra joining in.

Xander’s expression froze. “I don’t know. You’d have to ask her.”

“Come on she’s your fiancé’s best friend and you don’t know why she moved out? I find that hard to believe,” said Sandra.

Xander shrugged.

“Also I find it strange that she has moved back in again. Almost like Tara has something to hide,” said Sandra looking at James who was nodding in agreement.

The young man’s mind was racing. He didn’t want to mention Willow or her problems. “Dawn…that’s right,” he said nodding to himself. “Dawn missed Tara and wanted her to move back in.”

Sandra absently ran her fingers through her short dreadlocks. She had thrown in the question about Tara moving out just to keep Xander off balance. She was surprised at how transparently evasive and resistant he had become. Everything about this felt wrong to her and she felt frustrated at the lack of answers. Every avenue they had followed seemed to throw more questions rather than answers.

James took over the questioning as his partner sat back in her chair. “How did your fiancé come about her injuries on the night Ben died?”

The older man smiled as he saw Xander immediately tense up again.

“She tripped and fell…”

“You took both her and Ms Maclay to the hospital at the same time didn’t you?” interrupted Sandra.

“Y-yes,” said Xander eyeing the woman with concern.

“So you were there when Ms Maclay miraculously regained her sanity?” asked Sandra.

“No…sort of… I don’t know,” said Xander stumbling over his words.

“You either were or you weren’t,” snapped out Sandra.

“Look I can’t remember it was all a blur, what with Buffy and Anya…”

“Buffy,” said Sandra pouncing like a dog on a bone. “What happened to Miss Summers ?”

“Nothing, she…she was worried about Tara. I don’t know anything. I don’t know how Tara came back. I don’t know what happened. We’ve done nothing wrong. It was horrible Joyce died and then Tara…and know you come here and accuse us of…”

“Mr. Harris, please calm down, we are not accusing you of anything. We just want to get to the truth,” said James insincerely trying to reassure Xander.

“What sort of truth? I didn’t notice any Feds down here when Tara was attacked. It’s not like you could handle the truth anyway,” said Xander losing his temper completely. He closed his eyes disgusted he had been goaded into saying too much.

Sandra pounced immediately. “What couldn’t we handle?”

“Oh, I don’t know, how about…that a hell god sucked Tara’s sanity and the town is over run with vampires and demons,” said Xander figuring they’d never believe him anyway.

James started to laugh, but Sandra silenced him with a sharp glance.

“Mr. Harris, I know you don’t like us, but there is really no need for this attitude,” said Sandra sighing heavily. “We might as well terminate this interview, if you are not willing to help us.”

“I can just go?” Asked Xander trying to keep the mixture of relief and disbelief from showing on his face.

“That’s what I said,” replied Sandra.

Xander bolted from the office pleased to have escaped. He had faced many terrors in the years he had known Buffy but he would rather face any of them than another interview with the Feds.

*******************

Sandra waited until she was sure Xander was gone. “What do you think?”

“He’s hiding something, but he seems genuine about not knowing how Ben died.,” said James after a moment’s consideration.

“I want to check up on the death rates…”

“What you want to hunt vampires?” Asked James laughing.

Sandra smiled slightly. “Maybe not vampires but someone is killing people here and I want to find out why there isn’t a whole lot being done about it.”

********************

Willow woke with a start; she checked her watch 12:30. She shook her head and made a note to self. Remember to sit somewhere more comfortable if you are going to fall asleep watching TV. She continued stretching and yawning as she made her way to her bed.

As Willow passed Dawn’s bedroom she heard a soft noise like someone crying She knocked gently on the door. “Dawn are you okay?”

With no answer she entered the room. Her breath caught in her throat, not Dawn, it was Tara crying gently on the bed. Willow almost felt like slapping herself; how could she have forgotten that Tara was now sleeping in the teenager’s bed. She turned to leave but couldn’t, Tara was crying and she could make out the blonde’s hand clenching and unclenching. The hacker knew exactly what was happening.

“Shh, baby it’s okay,” said Willow.

“Willow,” said Tara in a soft whisper.

“I’m here…”

“Please,” said Tara a hysterical note to her soft voice. “Save me, Willow where are you? Can’t talk to… must protect Dawn.”

Willow knew then that Tara wasn’t talking to her but she had entered fully into her nightmare. The redhead entered the room. “Tara wake up, it’s just a dream,”

“Glory must never find out…the key,” said Tara starting to curl into the foetal position.

Willow sighed; she knew Tara could never be roused when she was like this. She wanted so much to comfort her ex- lover, but she wasn’t sure if she should.

“Oh god she is going to... her fingers in my head… she’s here in my head.” Tara started to tremble tears falling like waterfalls from her eyes.

The hacker started to cry she couldn’t bear this. She sat on the bed beside Tara and started to strokes her cheek gently. “Tara, shh baby, it’s safe now. Glory is gone. It’s me, and baby I’ll protect you.”

“Willow, you found me,” said Tara.

Willow tears start to come even more violently. “I found you Sweetie, I will always find you.” She hugs Tara to her and then with deep regret releases her and moves to get off the bed.

Tara’s hand shot out and held her arm. “She’ll come for me. If you leave. Please Willow…”

Willow stood for a second deeply unsure of herself. She could see Tara was still asleep and she would not leave her love like this. She had hurt Tara enough. Willow lay on top of the quilt and held Tara to her. She felt the intoxication of Tara’s scent and the warmth of her body. She kissed the blonde gently on the forehead and murmured soft words all night as she comforted the woman that she loved but was so sure she had lost.

When the time reached 6:00 Willow judged it was a good time to leave. She didn’t want to add to any of Tara’s problems by having to explain why she was in her bed. Also the blonde seemed in a deep, untroubled sleep now. Willow stood by the bedroom door for a while checking to make sure Tara was asleep.

**********************

Tara woke gently. She felt refreshed; it had been so long since she had slept a whole night without waking up feeling like the living dead. She felt relaxed maybe Buffy was right and moving in with her family made her feel safe. She turned over in the bed and stretched. She took a deep breath and a familiar scent flooded her senses; Willow.

Tara sat bolt upright and for a moment she thought the worse of Willow, but memories started to piece together. Gentle touches, soft words and she knew Willow had been there and she had comforted her all night and then left.

************************

Tara washed and dressed in a preoccupied haze. She practically knocked Buffy down the stairs and only the slayer’s superb reflexes saved her from falling.

Willow was in the dining room studying on her laptop when Tara entered.

“Willow can I talk to you ?” Asked Tara.

Willow stiffened “Of course you can and that’s what we are doing talking. It’s good to talk.”

“Will,” said Tara. “I know.”

“Know?” Asked Willow. “There’s nothing to know. I haven’t done magic…”

“Willow, please, I know you stayed in my room last night,” said Tara.

“Oh,” said the hacker. “You were having a n-nightmare and I didn’t want to leave you. I just wanted to stop you from feeling bad. I’m sorry for invading your space. I shouldn’t have.”

Willow’s shoulders drooped; she was waiting for an angry barrage from Tara.

Tara moved to Willow and kissed her gently on the cheek. “Thank you.” She walked from Willow not quite ready for the feelings that were being stirred inside her.

Willow sat at her computer smiling. A start and that was all she wanted. A place to start from.

I am so glad to see you writting this again. That nightmare scene, with Willow comforting Tara was a very intense, and visual read. I also feel a sense of humiliation radiating out from most of the characters, a reality of emotions. That is good. Thanks, this was a nice new years eve suprise.

Looks like a certain writer woke up :)

Goood.... I remembered this story, I always wondered what the big deal was with the FBI. All the scoobies have to do is not answer any of their questions and they wont have anything to go on. The person they should talk to isn't around anyway, heh.

For once I agree with Xander, where were the feds when something bad happened to Tara, hmm... Coming around after the crime is kinda pointless, besides what are to agents going to do anyway ? Maybe they can take a relaxing walk after sundown, heh. Bunch of useless people.

Anyway... I feel sad for Tara having those nightmares still, poor girl. Hasn't she suffered enough already ? Sweet of Willow to comfort her, though that was to be expected. This story had me thinking that indeed they skipped over some problems from season5 when season6 started, nice to see that handled.

Rane: Yeah back, sorry I haven’t been updating as much as usually but R/L gets in the way.

Iceprincess: Pleased I made you feel better. Yeah the peck is a start. More smoochies eventually.:grin ;)

Frau Rosenclay- Pleased you liked the nightmare scene, it was meant to be intense and it was something I worked very hard with my beta in. Thank you Beth for suggestions and guidance. This was meant to be a lighter piece compared to Twisted when I started to write it but ended up becoming heavier. Yes there are a lot of bad feelings of humiliation but the whole of season 6 left me with the feeling that the characters were alienated and I’ve carried it on.

Grimaldi- pleased you liked it.

Grimlock- Yeah sleeping Wendy:lol , not working hard enough. Actually you’ve got my main reason for writing this, lack of any sort of follow up (apart from Buffy’s death) on season 5 and it sort of pissed me off. On the Feds, what can I say sometimes on Buffy foes become friends.:cool

SilverWingedNemesis- thank you I’m always pleased when people like my stories.

Barnabasvamp-We felt that leaving Tara before the end of the night was something Willow had to do, out of respect.

Dexis-I’ll do my best not keep it so long.

Molsongrrrl-?:eyebrow

Willow Rocks- two wows and a bouncy; thank you.:grin

Excellent Wendy! Loved this, Tara gave her a chance, just a bit and now Willow can cheer up again. Love this, I was working on my highlight videos and it was older and far away, and Tara gives her a little inch, just hope and it makes Willow so happy. This is just like that. I like a giddy :willow and a forgiving :tara ! more soon I hope :)

This story's started off really well. I like the way you're bringing the characters together. On the show they seem to keep getting pulled apart. Not just on S6, it's happened other times.

I agree with the comments about it being strange that noones payed attention to Sunnydale before now. You'd think with everything that's going on there that the place would be overrun with paranormal investigators, reporters and documentary makers.

I wonder how the feds are going to react when they find out that Xander was telling the truth. :hmm

Closing Ranks part 4

Willow watched Tara cross the university quad and head for the cafeteria. She followed a few minutes behind and spotted Tara sitting at a table by herself reading. Willow took a deep breath and approached her. “Not eating today?”

“Oh W-Willow, no, not really hungry,” answered Tara looking up.

“Do you want to share my sandwiches? I’m sure Buffy’s made me enough for three people. She usually does,” admitted Willow ruefully.

“Will, what are you doing?” Asked Tara suspiciously.

“Nothing,” replied the hacker shrugging her shoulders.

“Willow…”

“’Kay, I wanted to talk to you; I’m worried about you. You’re having nightmares and I’ve noticed you’re not eating.” Declared Willow, hoping Tara wouldn’t think she was prying too much.

“You don’t have to w-worry about me anymore,” muttered Tara looking at the table not wanting to meet Willow’s eyes.

Willow reached for Tara’s hand and was surprised and delighted when Tara didn’t pull away from her. “I know I don’t have to. I want to.”

“It’s just h-hard, you know, moving back into house and worrying about the F.B.I,” said Tara her eyes still on the table.

“The nightmares started before you moved into the house,” argued Willow.

“H-how…how do you know?” Asked Tara

“Dawnie, she told me that you had one at the camp,” explained Willow.

“Oh, s-she shouldn’t have told, she should have come and s-spoken to me,” said Tara letting out an exasperated sigh. “I would have told her…”

“Tara, she was worried, you don’t have to go through things alone, we are all here for you,” said Willow sincerely.

Tara met Willow’s eyes and fought against her first instinct which was to get lost in the deep love, worry and tenderness in them. She looked away quickly and cleared her throat. “Hmm, so what s-sort of sandwiches has Buffy made you?”

With deep regret Willow released Tara’s hand. “Peanut butter and jelly, sort of her specialty. I’m surprised she didn’t make you any anyway?”

“She offered, but I didn’t want to her to go to any trouble,” said Tara.

“Tara, we’re family, when are you going to realize it?” Asked Willow as she started to share the food from her lunch bag.

Sandra watched them from a discreet distance. Her and James had spent the morning going through the college records checking out Buffy, Willow and Tara’s records. She was starting to get frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation.

“Well, they look cozy all of a sudden,” remarked James.

“You noticed,” said Sandra a sardonic look on her face. “Amazing considering the fact they’ve barely been seen near one another since Tara moved out, ‘til now that is.”

“You think it’s an act?” Asked James looking interested as the two girls started to giggle over something Willow had pulled out of her bag.

“I don’t know? You?” Asked Sandra.

“I’m not sure they are good at acting, maybe moving back in together has ignited some sort of flame,” said James with a grin on his face.

“I never knew you were a romantic,” said Sandra rolling her eyes.

“Well they are a cute couple,” he countered, with a wink.

“Whatever,” said Sandra.

“Oh, c’mon Sand, what’s eating you today?” Asked James looking closely at his partner.

She sighed and stretched her neck back trying to rid herself of the tension that had been making her edgy all day. “I don’t know every time we seem to be getting somewhere, we hit a brick wall. I mean look at today. Willow’s professors have her down as some sort of genius, Tara is a quiet straight A student and Buffy is the angel who gave up her education to look after her sister when their Mother died, so where does that leave us?”

James shook his head. “Hey, I know, lets blow it all off and go out tonight.”

“James,” said Sandra drawing out the word. “I have reports to read…”

“No, for one night only we will be ordinary human beings and we will go out on a Friday night,” said James who was still watching the table the two witches sat at as Tara left it and squeezed Willow’s shoulder and he couldn’t miss the look of tenderness that passed between them.

“I don’t know James,” said Sandra whose eyes had also never left Willow and Tara. “Why not? Though, I doubt if this place has much of a night life. Hey, I know we could go to the bronze.”

The grin froze on James’s face. “The place where they all hang out? I thought we were going to take a break, you know we’re going to stick out like a sore thumb.”

“Maybe, but then again it may let us get a feel for the town,” said Sandra.

James sighed as he realized that his plans for a relaxing evening were over.

************************

Buffy was waiting in her car at the end of the afternoon when Willow finished her classes.

“So why do I deserve special Mom treatment?” Asked Willow with a grin.

“Oh ,it’s not just you,” said Buffy. “I picked up Tara earlier.”

“Why? Is something going on?” Asked Willow instantly worried.

“No, its just…Well, Dawn is staying with Janice and I picked up Tara on the way to drop her off and you I know I don’t have a shift at the Double Meat so I thought; Hey, I know why don’t we all go to the Bronze tonight and I knew you were at the chem. lab late so voila here I am to take you home,” explained Buffy.

“But it’s not that late,” protested Willow her brow furrowed.

“Well, we have that thing to do,” said Buffy.

“What thing?” Asked Willow looking more puzzled.

“That thing, where we make you drop dead gorgeous so that Tara won’t be able to take her eyes off you all night,” smiled Buffy at the wide-eyed reaction of her friend.

****************

Buffy had pulled out a bunch of Willow’s and her own clothes as the redhead showered.

“Where’s Tara?” Asked Willow as she emerged from the bathroom, clad only in a towel with another one wrapped around her hair.

“Anya called and invited her for dinner to discuss some wedding plans,” said Buffy.

Willow cocked her head to one side. “Nothing to do with you?”

“Maybe, but Xander’s still feeling a little jittery after being interrogated by the FBI so I think it might be good for him to have Tara there to spare him some of Anya’s rabid planning,” explained Buffy.

“Buffy I don’t think this is such a good idea. I mean what if Tara thinks I’m being presumptuous.”

“Will, we are all going to the bronze to have a good time and if you happen to look incredible all the better,” argued Buffy.

Willow nodded but she wasn’t convinced.

******************************

Anya surveyed Tara critically. “Well, the jeans are good, they cling to your curves in all the right places, but the baggy sweater is going to have to go. Your hair is nice but we’ll add a little sparkle to the make-up.”

“What’s wrong with my sweater?” Asked Tara blushing at the way her friend was eyeing her up in a very calculated manner.

“Tara, you have great breasts. Xander is always staring at them when you show your cleavage. I don’t mind because I trust you both and you’re gay,” said Anya brightly.

Tara’s blush increased travelling down to the talked about part of her anatomy. “Anya, what exactly are we doing?”

“We are getting you ready for the Bronze tonight,” explained Anya slowly as if talking to a child.

“But I am ready,” protested Tara.

“But I’m making you better,” said Anya moving away from Tara and going into her closet. I hope you realize I’m taking valuable time out of my wedding preparations for this.”

Tara knew in heart of hearts just what her friends were up to. She imagined that Buffy was putting Willow through the same thing. It made her feel loved and wanted that they cared so much, but a part of her wanted to scream at them that she wasn’t ready to forgive Willow yet. Another larger part felt the opposite, with the raw loneliness of living without Willow crushing her, that added to the fact that she could see how well Willow was doing, turning her life around. Tara sighed and decided to go with the flow and enjoy being pampered and fussed over by Anya.

Anya came out of her closet with a simple white peasant shirt. “This should fit you and if we pull it down over your shoulders, it’ll have Xander and Willow…” Anya stopped and looked away. “Not that we are doing this for Willow, no siree.”

Tara put away her concerns, for now, and just went with it.

************************

Willow looked at herself in the mirror and then turned to Buffy. “I’m not sure…”

“Not sure what?” Asked Buffy.

“That I want to do this,” said Willow.

“Why? If you don’t go tonight it’ll look weird like you’re trying to avoid her,” said Buffy.

“I know but Tara’s having a tough time right now and I might be adding extra pressure…”

“Or you may make her happier. I know you hurt her, but you love her and she loves you. You’re just going to have to remind her why she fell for you,” said Buffy smiling confidently.

Willow smiled back at Buffy but with less confidence. “I’m not sure these leather pants are me.”

***************************

Tara and Anya sat at a corner table at the bronze as Xander fetched the drinks.

Tara watched the door nervously, like she waiting for a date. Which was ridiculous, she argued to herself all she was doing was meeting with friends, but her heart still skipped a beat as she watched Buffy enter the club and it then pounded as she saw Willow. Willow, dressed in red leather pants, a shear black shirt and a short black leather jacket. Her eyes captured every inch of Willow, almost as if she had forgotten how sexy she could look.

Buffy grinned at Tara’s reaction, the spark between the two witches still so obviously there. “Don’t look now, Will, but the look on your ex’s face tells me she’d love to eat you alive, literally.”

Willow couldn’t help but grin. “Really, she’s looking at me?”

“Oh, yeah,” said Buffy. “Every bit of you. Take your jacket off and let’s walk to the bar, give her a good view of your butt in those pants.”

“Buffy,” protested Willow but without a great deal of conviction, she needed Tara. She felt the loss of the blonde witch like a deep ache in her bones, Willow wanted her back in her life for keeps and if it meant reminding Tara of their sexual; as well as intellectual and emotional attraction then so be it.

*******************

“Tara?” Asked Anya.

“What?” Asked Tara watching Willow intently.

“If you want her so much why don’t you go back to her, she’d have you back yesterday?” Asked Anya curiously, not always understanding why humans complicate things.

“I know Anya but she hurt and betrayed me and…” Tara stopped closed her eyes and gulped to stop any tears appearing. “I don’t think I could stand it if she did it again…it would kill me.” She added honestly.

Anya gawped for a second shocked at the admittance from the usually reticent blonde. “She won’t.”

“I have to be sure. I can’t be with her again, not ‘til I know I can trust her. Look Anya, this is a bad idea, I’m going home.”

“Don’t, they’ve seen you now what will it look like if you run out?” Asked Anya.

“I don’t c-care…”

“Where’s your pride Tara?” Asked Anya firmly. “Don’t shrink away, I won’t let you. Stay, please, for me.”

“Why Anya?” Asked Tara.

“Because you’re my friend and I want you to be here. You don’t even have to talk to Willow if you don’t want to,” said Anya. “And anyway they are here now so you would have to walk right past them.”

“O-okay,” whispered Tara as Buffy and Willow arrived at the table.

Willow hesitated a moment before sitting down across from Tara, not wanting to sit next to her and invade her personal space when she hadn’t been invited.

“Where’s Xander?” Asked Anya. “And how did you mange to get served so much quicker than him?”

“It must be our natural beauty and charm, of course I used slayer strength to elbow people out of the way,” grinned Buffy.

Willow giggled nervously and then cleared her throat and looked at Tara. “You look nice.”

“Thank you,” said Tara. “You too, you look nice too.” Tara looked down at the table and then away from the group, pretending that she was scanning the crowd for Xander.

Willow felt bad seeing the tension in Tara’s shoulders and she noticed a little muscle in the blonde’s cheek tensing and relaxing as she clenched her jaw. “Tara, do you want to dance?”

Tara turned her head in surprise and then shook it.

“Please,” said Willow her voice breaking slightly.

Tara gave in nodding.

Buffy watched them head to the dance floor. She turned to Anya. “Score.”

“Ya think?” Asked Anya sharply.

“You don’t?” Replied Buffy.

“No I don’t. If you had a spoken to Tara…she has issues and I’m sure Willow has too,” said Anya.

“You think they’ll never get back together?” Asked the slayer looking suddenly despondent.

“No, I’m saying that, I just think it’ll take more than sexy clothes and a night at the Bronze to get them there,” said Anya gravely.

Xander placed a tray of drinks on the table and slumped in a chair next to Anya. “They’re like animals out there tonight.”

********************

As they walked towards the dance floor, Willow put a hand on Tara’s arm and guided her to a quiet area away from the main bulk of people. “I’m sorry, I had nothing to do with this. Well maybe a little bit, but I don’t like to see you embarrassed and upset.”

“It’s o-okay, our friends just wants to help,” said Tara shrugging.

“Tara, will you date me?” Blurted out Willow her heart in her mouth.

“Willow…”

Willow could see Tara shaking her head. “Before you say yes or no, please hear me out. I want you back and I know it’s not that easy. That’s why I want to…” Willow stopped a second and an old fashioned word popped into her brain. “Court you.”

Tara smiled in spite of herself, charmed. “Court m-me?”

“Aha, I thought we could go to the movies, go for walks, you know get to know one another again. I miss you, you were my best friend as well as my lover,” said Willow. “I don’t want to put pressure on you or make you uncomfortable. I just want to spend some time with you and if at anytime you want to stop this, I’ll respect your wishes and I won’t bug you again. Please Tara, give me a chance.”

“I gave you a chance before, remember?” Answered Tara feeling a little churlish, but not able to give up her defenses as she pulled her arms tightly around her.

“I’ve changed, let me show you…”

“I d-don’t want you to change, I just w-want you to be Willow,” interrupted Tara.

“I am, please let me show you,” said Willow gently. “I know I hurt you, but I know I can make you happy. What have you got to lose?” Willow shook her head as soon as she spoke, her choice of words not the wisest

“My mind,” snapped Tara instantly and then regretting it just as quickly as she saw the look of pain flash across Willow’s face.

“That’s fair, I deserve that,” said Willow trying desperately to hold back the tears that were threatening to flow. “Sorry for wasting your time.” She turned sharply and went to run from Tara, the club and everything that was in it, but she was stopped by Tara’s hand on her shoulder.

“God, I’m sorry…I d-didn’t mean to…I know how well you’ve been doing,” said Tara turning Willow around, which the redhead tried her best to stop happening, and feeling guilty as she saw that Willow had dissolved into tears. “I don’t know what I want. I miss you too, but I’m not sure…” Tara stopped and thought; she swallowed before she went on. “But you know, maybe being courted by you would be a good way to start.”

Willow shook her head. “No. You are just doing this to make me feel better.”

“No, I’m not,” said Tara fervently. “I’m doing it to make me feel better. Willow you’re right, you are the one person who can make me happy, but you are also the one person who can rip me apart. Still, I think if we take it slow and I mean s-slow, I’m not ready for…” Tara blushed, wondering how she could be so shy with someone who she had made love with more times than she could remember. “You know.”

“I know,” said Willow her tears fading. “May I hold your hand?”

Tara smiled and nodded, holding her hand out for Willow and feeling the warmth and security, she always used to feel when she was with the hacker.

“Do you want to go back to the table and what do you want to tell them?” Asked Willow determined that she was going to play this Tara’s way.

“Let’s go back. We’ll tell them the truth, that we are working on things,” said Tara squeezing Willow’s hand ever so slightly as they headed back to the table together.

Buffy spied Willow and Tara approach hand in hand. “I told you it would work.” She said triumphantly. They settled into some seats at the table.

“You two are looking very close,” said Xander fishing for some information.

“Not exactly,” said Willow. “But maybe, eventually. Just don’t ask too much.”

“Well, that sounds like at least a minor celebration to me,” said Buffy. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll go to the bar and get some drinks so that at least we can celebrate tonight rather than next week if Xand goes for them.”

“Hey,” said the young man but without much ire to it.

I really enjoyed having time to catch up with this fic. I love that Willow and Tara are slowly starting to work out a few things and that all of the scoobies are playing matchmaker. Looking forward to seeing where this story goes from here. Thanks for the update, this story is great.

great update :)

i'm glad that Willow and Tara are taking things slow, and getting to know each other again.

I'm not stealing, I'm just taking things without paying for them. In what twisted dictionary is that stealing?

Wendy, wow, great update.

I remember what a friend once told me. Dating is for people who don't know each other, when you've been with someone, you know what they are like, you just have to decide if you are willing to risk it again. It's true for Tara I think but in a way it's different too because Willow became a different person in a way and Tara needs to make sure she isn't that person anymore. That line "my mind," wow , really strong, really made a point. Thanks for the update!

wow!

great!

I really liked the W/T interaction, so in character.

But the feds? were they at the Bronze when all this happened?

BTW, I got a kick out of Sandra saying she doubts Sunnydale has much of a night life. HeHe. They'll see about that, won't they?

And, as this is season 6, the troika should be around, messing things up. Troika + feds, quite the combination. :-)

Hope you update soon(er).
