gotta say, i LOVE it.

i do spotlight theatre at my school, and just everything about it is so fulfilling. we just did CATS as our spring musical, and now everyone's just one big family. we all support one another, it's nifty to say the least.

so, we gonna be seeing some vicarious smoochies in the near future.? hmmmmmmm? :)

After a long and important consideration, I have decided to put this story on hold for awhile. It will be finished eventually, but right now my heart is not in it. I'm hoping you guys will still like it as much in a month or so, when I can get back the joy in writing rather than feeling like I HAVE to write. This also comes after losing a three page update when my computer decided it wanted to shut down without letting me know. So I truly apologise for this, but it must be done to keep the integrity of the story intact. I want this story to have a strong ending, and I'm still only about halfway through. I think I'll finish it, then post at random intervals, just to keep everybody guessing.

Toodles!

Ok, so it's been a little over a month. Sorry for the delay, I finally got back into writing again. So this is the next update, it's normal sized.

I suppose the disclaimers are already known, but the characters do not belong to me.

So here's the next chapter of...

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

They had been walking in silence for three minutes before either dared break it. Willow was looking around, having been following Tara, since she didn’t really know her way around yet, and noticed they seemed to be entering a residential neighborhood. She turned toward Tara slightly as they walked, confused. “Is this the way to the restaurant?”

Tara looked around, realizing that she had missed the turn to get to the main street, and stopped walking. Willow stopped with her and turned to look at her. “Tara? Are you alright?” Tara’s lost expression scared Willow, as she had never known the girl to be so detached that she would forget where they were going. And there was something else. Fear. The moment it registered with Willow that Tara looked scared was the moment the blonde snapped out of it.

Tara jumped slightly and looked at Willow for a moment as if she had just realized she wasn’t alone. She looked down at her hand in the other girl’s and smiled slightly, then looked back up into the green eyes that were full of worry. “I’m fine. Just… A little lost in thought, is all.” After a moment of silence, she smiled at Willow and began to walk back the way they had came, effectively pulling the redhead with her, since they still held hands. “We just went a block too far. It’s this way.”

As she began to lead Willow back in the correct direction, Tara’s mind was racing. Thoughts and feelings ran through her so quickly she barely had time to register any of them. They were about Willow, and Joanie. They were about what dating Willow meant about Joanie’s memory. She felt very conflicted, stuck somewhere between wanting to live her life and wanting to forever honor her dead girlfriend. Suddenly she felt like just being with Willow in and of itself was betraying her. She looked up at Willow and for a moment, just a moment, saw the blue eyes she had known so well looking back at her. She saw Joanie. That moment was enough to drive Tara away from Willow and into the street. She moved backwards so fast that she didn’t have time to hold her balance and fell backward, her hands reaching back to catch her. She landed in the middle of the road, and sat there for a moment, breathing heavily and looking incredibly scared.

Willow stood there for a second, utterly shocked, before she began to react. She moved forward and gently took hold of Tara’s arm, helping her stand up. “Are you alright? What happened?”

Tara looked up into Willow’s eyes, tears stinging her own, and knew exactly how to answer that. She had to lie. “I’m fine… I j-just tripped.” She looked at her palms, beads of blood forming from the small cuts all along them. “I uh, I hurt my hands.”

The redhead knew there was more to it than that, that something was really wrong with Tara, but she had no clue how to ask about it. She decided that for now, it was probably best to leave it be and let Tara tell her in her own time. If she even wants me to know at all… I mean, this is only our first date. She probably doesn’t trust me enough to tell me whatever’s wrong. That worried Willow, even though it shouldn’t have. It worried her that Tara didn’t trust her. She vowed to herself, right then and there, that she would do whatever it took to earn the trust of this girl she had grown to care about so much.

*

They arrived at the resturant, each girl lost in thought. They entered silently and waited for a table. Once they sat down, Tara immediately opened the menu and began reading it, holding it up and partially blocking Willow’s view of her. Willow had been watching her carefully throughout the short walk. She had seen a myriad of emotions pass over Tara’s features, none of them good. She hoped that something external was bothering Tara, and not the date. That’s really rude of me… I want something bad to be happening to her rather than her just not wanting to be here? She probably doesn’t want to be here. She’s probably just being nice. Why would anyone want to date me? The self deprecating thoughts depressed Willow, and she brought the menu up to block her face so Tara couldn’t see the deep frown forming on her features. So she couldn’t see the hurt in her eyes.

About five minutes later, the waiter came and took their order, as well as their menu-sheilds. They were both out in the open now, nothing to hide them from eachother. They each spent a couple of minutes looking everywhere but at eachother, before Tara, staring down into her lap, finally spoke. “I… I’m sorry, Willow.”

Willow looked at her, rather surprised about the words she had spoken, not having expected Tara to be sorry for anything. “For what?”

Tara looked up briefly, before fiddling with her napkin and speaking, again to the table. “For… for being so awkward. For being upset. It… has nothing to do with you.” Once done speaking, she lifted her head and made eye contact, making sure Willow believed her.

She did, and nodded slightly. She reached across the table and put her hand over Tara’s as it played with the bundle of napkin, fork and knife. “It’s alright.” She gently ran her thumb over the back of the blonde’s hand. “If you ever need to talk, I’m here.”

Tara smiled, genuinely glad for the comfort. She looked up from where her eyes were resting on Willow’s hand on her’s to meet the green eyes across the table from her. “Thank you, Willow.”

They looked into eachothers eyes, both smiling, until the moment was broken by hands landing on the table between them, and Buffy smiling down at them. “Hey guys, I wasn’t expecting to see you here… what’s up?”

Tara smiled politely at Buffy and pulled her hand away from under Willow’s, putting both her hands in her lap. “Nothing, we just came here to get dinner.”

Willow looked across the table at Tara for a moment, then looked up and Buffy and smiled. “Exactly. Just here for a friendly dinner between friends.”

Buffy smiled. “Then you wouldn’t mind if I joined you. I mean, it’s not like it’s a date or anything, right?”

The girls looked at eachother, both hesitant to correct her and Willow was the first to speak. “Well, we already ordered… so your food wouldn’t be ready and we’d be eating all ‘tra-la-la, we have food and Buffy doesn’t, oh aren’t we special’ and you’d feel left out, so I really think it’d be best if we ate alone.”

Buffy furrowed her eyebrows and looked between them. “Is something going on?”

Willow, looking slightly nervous, began to babble. “No, of course not. Nothing’s going on, why would something be going on? Do you really think something would be going on between me and Tara? I mean, we’re friends. Very friendly friends with friendliness. We are just two friends, going out to dinner. There’s nothing wrong with friends being friendly and going out for a friendly dinner, is there? Of course there isn’t. It’s perfectly normal and what teenage girls do. We go out to dinner with our friends.” Willow paused in her babble to look at Tara, who looked as if she wanted to crawl under the table out of shame. She frowned, realizing that talking this way was hurting Tara. She must think I don’t like her… God, I am such a dweeb. Here I am, making Tara think I don’t like her when… I better not mind-babble right now, I need to clear this up.

Willow took a deep breath, looked at Tara, who was staring at her hands in her lap, seemingly on the verge of tears, then looked up at Buffy. “Buffy… Tara and I are on a date.”

Tara looked up at Willow with tears in her eyes, and smiled. That smile, Willow decided, was worth any amount of teasing and ridicule she might endure because of her relationship with Tara. Seeing the girl happy was worth everything.

Buffy looked between them. “You’re on a… date… Oh…” She began to back up a little. “Well then I should just…” She guestured at moving toward the door. “I should just go.” She continued backing up for a few paces, more and more quickly, until she backed directly into their waiter, who was carrying a tray of drinks for three separate tables. The drinks and the tray went flying and both Buffy and the young man fell to the floor, Coke spilling all over them.

Buffy quickly got up, having landed on top of the poor boy and looked down. “I am SO sorry.”

He looked up at her and smiled slightly, then began laughing. He stood up. “It’s fine. My name’s Ryan.” He extended his hand.

Buffy smiled brilliantly, realizing this boy was not only cute, he had a sense of humor. She took his hand and shook it slowly. “I’m Buffy… So… Ryan… Do you have a special someone in your life?”

He grinned. “Just you…”

Willow and Tara watched in astonishment as Buffy walked toward the bathrooms with the person she had just spilled soda on.

They turned to look at eachother at the same moment, and Tara broke the silence with “well… that turned out well…” and both girls burst into a fit of giggles.

****

Ok, that's all for now. I'll get started straight away on the next bit.

I missed your updates the last month or so. I really want to know how Tara is going to handle her guilt. And dang, Buffy is smooth. I'd probably have done just that as well, probably not going to the bathroom with him. But I definitely would have fallen into him. Thanks for the update!

Wow, busy week. The update WILL be up at some point tonight, I just need to write it. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours.

To all those who think Buffy is a slutpuppy- They went to the bathroom to CLEAN OFF THE SODA. That is it.

writerfreak- Maybe I SHOULD wait awhile, just so you WILL do that again. ;-)

will- Thank you. I'm workin on more.

WillowRulez- I covered the slutpuppy issue, so I won't answer that again. Tara will get to it, but the next few issues won't be her's.

Guppy- Yeah, that RL is being a bitch. I've fallen into more people than I can count. *shrug* it happens.

More later, guys. Lovin the replies. Gives me reason to keep writing. Keep it up! I luv ya all! :love

That was sweet - both girls so confused and hesitant about each other, but both of them mustering the confidence to finally say what they were thinking, and thereby defuse any doubts that they want to date. Tara's sadness, and conflicted emotions over being attracted to Willow, run very deep - I have no doubt that'll be quite an effort for her to overcome, and tell Willow about it, so she can understand why Tara is the way she is.

Buffy's instant good fortune was a cute touch - some people just have the knack. It was sweet though that Willow and Tara, who don't have that sort of confidence, still managed to get their date, through courage and honesty with each other.

Everyone- Sorry for the long spaces between updates, I seem to get more easily distracted during the summer. Mostly because my buffy dvds like to call to me. They tell me again and again to watch them. Who am I to say no to the awesomeness that is the buffyverse?

Artemis- There will be much angst and emotion in updates to come. Tara has a long road ahead of her, that's for sure. And Buffy is one of those people that really annoys me. The ones that can spill something on someone and it somehow becomes endearing. ... I've been told I can do that, but I don't believe it... ;-)

willow_tara_always- You'll get a pretty good idea what she's going through in updates to come, I hope...

This update was difficult to write. I seemed to have many problems with getting into our dear girls' heads. Please let me know how I did? Anyway, here goes.

The Midnight Players of SHS

****

Dinner had been far more comfortable after the girls were out about dating to Buffy. Willow noticed that Tara was smiling and laughing, even nervously making a few jokes. Whatever it was that had caused her issue earlier in the evening was apparently gone. Willow didn’t know that most of Tara’s happiness was pretend. Not all of it, of course. Some of Tara was overjoyed to be there with Willow. But she was nervous, and depressed. Part of her still felt like she was cheating on Joanie, just by being in a resturant with a girl she was on a date with. She knew it was irrational, but she still felt a strong sense of loyalty to the girl she lost. This, what she was doing now, was the biggest act of betrayal to Joanie’s memory. And what made it even worse was that she hadn’t realized what a huge problem it would be before getting Willow involved.

A part of her knew she’d have to tell Willow what was bothering her, but she also knew that the first date was not the proper time. She decided after really realizing how nervous it made Willow that’d it be best to hide for the time being. Once deciding that, she became far more comfortable in talking and joking with the redhead across the table from her.

“And then she said ‘I didn’t know one of your henchmen could sing…’” Both girls burst into giggles. Tara had been telling stories from her years working behind the scenes with the drama group and so far, Willow was loving every second. The redhead felt like Tara was finally opening up, but she also could tell there was something off. She figured it was too early in their relationship to push, so she let it be and enjoyed the girl’s company. But still, she noticed that Tara’s smiles and laughter never quite reached her eyes.

They walked to Tara’s house in silence, the false cheer lost once they left the safety of being around a bunch of people and walked out into the late evening. The streetlights had come on at least an hour before and the darkness of their surroundings added to the gloom Tara was already feeling. She knew in some basic part of her that what she was doing was wrong; or at least, she knew she was doing something wrong. She just couldn’t tell wheather she was being unfair to Joanie or to Willow. After all, she had promised Joanie her heart. But does it still mean anything if I continue this with Willow? She wasn’t sure, and she had a headache from worrying about it. The headache probably explained why she was distancing herself from Willow, walking with at least a foot between them at all times, but the redhead didn’t know that.

Why is she staying so far away from me? Willow had noticed since they left the resturant a marked decline in Tara’s mood. She wasn’t sure what she had done to cause it, but was sure it was something she did. Was I supposed to hold the door? Was it rude of me to go out first? Duh, of course it was rude. That must be why she’s so far away, I messed it all up. I’m such a dummy. “Stupid head.”

Tara was broken from her thoughts by Willow’s mumble. “What?” She looked up to Willow’s face, confused, and noticed the hurt and bewilderment that marred the girl’s features before that expression gave way to confusion and embarassment.

“Did I say that out loud? I’m sorry, you’re not a stupid head. Not a stupid head at all, in fact you have a very nice head. A head that is in no way stupid. Nope, nothing stupid about Tara Maclay’s head. No siree…”

“Willow…”

It was a gently spoken word, almost low enough that she didn’t hear it. But hear it she did, and that one word, also her name, caused her to stop speaking abruptly. She stayed silent for a moment, then replied with a simple “huh?”

Tara smiled slightly and took Willow’s hand. “You’re not a stupid head.” Tara had realized that her distance was hurting Willow. Whether her being there that night with the redhead was right or wrong, what she was doing to Willow was wrong. She couldn’t let her think that she did something wrong. There was a long pause as Willow gently smiled and Tara continued. “I’m the stupid head for not telling you… well, I can’t really tell you yet. But I’ve been distracted all night and it’s not your fault, I promise.” She squeezed Willow’s hand and let it go when she realized they were standing in front of her house. “Goodnight, Willow.”

Willow smiled slightly, but it was obviously forced. “Goodnight, Tara.”

The redhead stood there as Tara backed up a few paces, then turned and walked into her house. She didn’t look back.

Tara had always been a light sleeper. It was a defense mechanism, she guessed, because she always woke up when something was wrong. She knew something was wrong immediately upon waking, because it was somewhere around one in the morning and someone was tapping on her window. She got up quickly and knelt between her bed and the window. She saw immediately that a very damp looking Faith was on the other side of the panes of glass, so she opened the window as quickly as she could.

Faith scrambled in and shut it behind her, so as not to let too much of the rain in. “What gives, T? Why’s the window locked?”

Tara looked at Faith, wondering why the girl was in her room, but decided to answer her question and just let the girl tell her in her own time. “Donny must have locked it.” Neither girl spoke a word about what he would have been doing in his little sister’s room, they both knew better.

Faith nodded, and stayed silent for a few moments. She walked over to Tara’s closet, which was only a few steps since Tara’s room was rather small, and took out a thick and fuzzy blanket and wrapped it around herself. She sat across from Tara on the girl’s floor and stared at her lap.

Tara watched her. She had already dried off her face with the blanket and Tara couldn’t help but notice that Faith kept having to dry off her face. She’s crying… Tara was really wondering what could have happened to make the girl so upset, but she knew that if she pressed, Faith would never tell her. That’s just how it went. So, she waited.

About five minutes went by with Faith crying silently and Tara watching her wipe away the tears before anyone finally spoke. Faith looked up at Tara and said simply, “B has a boyfriend.”

Tara had seen the young man at the resturant earlier and how well he got along with Buffy. She should have known that this would happen, that Faith would be the first one to find out. She was Buffy’s best friend, after all. Tara scooted toward Faith and settled leaning into the corner of her room with Faith next to her. The other girl shifted until her head was resting in Tara’s lap and she was curled up next to her on the floor. Tara gently stroked her hair and said nothing, knowing that Faith still had more she needed to say.

She was right, and Faith continued a minute later. “She called me. Eleven o’clock. Gushing about some new boy toy she met at the pizza place. Says he’s perfect. Everything she ever dreamed of.” She started choking up, and it was far to evident that she was crying, so she stopped talking for a few minutes to compose herself again. She still hated when anyone knew she was crying, even though she also knew that Tara could always tell. “She’s going out with him tomorrow. She wants me to drop by and meet him.”

There was another long pause, this one lasting about three minutes. “I don’t want her to do this, T. It ain’t fair. I mean, what’s Mr. Macho got that I don’t?” She looked at Tara and noticed that, in spite of herself, Tara was trying not to make a comment. “Besides that…” Both girls giggled a little, before the mood became serious again very quickly.

“I just mean… I don’t know.”

Tara nodded, understanding. “You love her.”

Faith nodded also. “I do.”

Tara knew how hard it was for Faith to admit love. And though she couldn’t quite say the words, she could admit to the feelings. She just hoped that Faith would be able to deal with Buffy’s evident straightness and not let it keep her from loving anyone else. Faith apparently had nothing more to say because she got up and climbed into Tara’s bed, her signal that it was time for conversation to end and sleep to occur. It was something neither girl ever talked about, with eachother or with anyone else. They cuddled together and went to sleep.

When Tara woke up the next morning, Faith was gone. It always amazed her that, even with how light of a sleeper she was, Faith always managed to get up and leave without waking her. But this morning, something was different. When Tara rolled over, something crinkled between her pillow and her cheek. She reached up and grabbed it, a piece of paper, and sat up in bed, opening her eyes. It was a note, obviously from Faith.

T,

tell B i’m sorry.

writerfreak- There'll be more soon, provided I can continue to concentrate. I was trying to get this up for your birthday, but I'm late. ...Maybe I'm pregnant. Or... the fic is pregnant? I dunno, that wasn't the best analogy. :balloons Happy Birthday!!! ...even though it hasn't been for an hour... I hope you got to buy alcohol!

willow_tara_always- Thank you. I will. Eventually.

WillowRulez- Oh, enjoying the summer I am. We have four episodes of the series left and then my mom and I will have watched the entire series in two and a half months. And... I'm not gonna answer questions bout Faith. You'll have to wait and see. :smug

Belli Bear- *rather shaken* Umm... That was bracing... *smiles* It's nice to see you around here, I love my readers dearly. *hands a giant box of cookies* This might help with the fidgeting... or make it worse cause... sugar... but hey, that might mean longer feedback, which would be awesome. I like you. I shall bribe you muchly to keep you coming back. (In all actuality, you remind me alot of my friends. But that still earns you points, so... yeah.) KEEP READING! I COMMAND THEE!!! Or, don't... really up to you. :peace

willohand- :-D :bigwave

Willow Watcher- Hey! You live nearish to me! COOL!... Oh, and don't worry. No death in the immediate upcoming chapters...

More soon as I can concentrate long enough to write it.

ahhh, I love this story! I have no great feedback seeing as I'm still drunk but hopefully I'll get back here to give you something good. Thank you for the update! No more being distracted by Buffy if it distracts from our story.

Ok, stumbled upon this fic on some... bored curiosity to be honest. i didnt think I,d find it interesting or anything, I mean, i've been seeing this one up in the new posts for a while now...

Well, its 2 am, I read it all, and damn, LOVE that story! Your Willow's bableness is great, and the interraction between everyone is so cute.

Now that joanie girl is quite the mystery, how could anyone kill themself when theyre with Tara ? :shy And yknow what, shes taken the place of the bad guy on my side of the picture (cuz I have this fixation about finding a bad guy in every story) How could she do that to Tara?!?

now theres just one thing that bothered me while I was reading. Nothing big but, i believe resturant actually is spelled restaurant :geek.

so, 2:10 am now, i was already uber tired today, so i need the sleep baaadly. I'll leave you better, more in-depth feedback next time, promise ;) So update soon!

I'm working on the next bit now, and I hope to have it up by tomorrow morningish time. There IS another project already in the works that I may begin posting on soon. Not too sure about that yet. Anyway, on to replies.

Belli Bear- I HAVE MY OWN HOBO! Awesomeness. I shall have to amass an army. *rubs hands together* :devilish *Leaves another box of cookies* Hopefully this'll tide you over if you get here before my next update.

Guppy- Well, no more distraction because my mom and I finished the entire series... And thank YOU for the feedback.

Krokador- It's always great to see a new reader. It makes me very happy. I'm glad it got your attention, and quite glad you stumbled in. You bring up a point I didn't explain too well. Joanie is one of my more complex characters. I have created a backstory for her, and I have a whole personality in my head... but sadly, none of what I have fits into this story. She may pop up in other stories of mine, because thus far she is my favorite made up (non rp) character. Sadly, what she did is all too common. There was no reason for what she did, it just happened. Please don't hate her too much. And I've always had a problem spelling restaurant. I'm horrible with it... can never remember the a.

kimmy_s- Many many many things shall happen. I could tell you, but it'd ruin the surprise!
