wow!
really sorry I didn't mind to offend or anything, in fact I'm a geek too, but here in my country people call us freaks.....you know we don't speak english usually but it's usual to take some words.....and the word they chose was freak.....geek is not used. I've just found out that freak has a bad meaning. sorry. well and thank you for correcting me :blush

watty, so sorry it's taken me a while to leave feedback for this chapter. Logged in special just for some Geek Love!

First of all, you really know how to appeal to my, what's it called, sense of delight and vanity. There's nothing like seeing an IM conversation in a fanfic that mentions Dar Williams. *sigh* :love

Second, now that I work in the software industry I had a special appreciation for this line:

"I suppose common sense isn't a valid code in your system?"

Poor Willow! And poor Harmony too, although I know that we're not supposed to feel sorry for her. It's Murphy's Law that 9 times out of 10 that Staples, Inc. and staples.com are the same company but 1 time out of 10 staples.net is a totally different company than Staples, Inc. Like it's a company that makes giant staples that secure volleyball nets to the posts, or something like that. But Willow's point that Staples is not an obscure company is well made.

The drama and the suspense of the package that Willow doesn't notice when she throws herself on her bed! It's masterful! And those people like Willow who get depressed and down and skip meals - well, if only that were me. When I get depressed and down I go for the ice cream and the Doritos. Different strokes, I guess. ;)

I'm interested to see what role Buffy will play in this Geek Saga, given Willow's thoughts about how they've grown apart. I haven't skipped ahead to read the rest on your website or on any other secret servers since I'm so enjoying the gradual unfolding from week to week. I love the suspense, the anticipation, the torture! More, watty, more! (If someone overheard that...well, I won't go there. ;) )

Watty.

Harmony from accounts payable was hillarious! I secretly believe that somehow there is one of those people at every. single. work place. You know, the dim witted one that memorized the rule book and has been blinded by the tiny amount of power they wield?

again... the chat was hillarious *snicker* the hotness that is Dar... heh heh.

and, ok, so Willow has lost her will to live -- sucked dry by the day from hell... but the package!! She doesn't notice the package?!

Oh the suspense!

I lurve this story...

Oh, I know only a fraction of what it's like to deal with people like Harmony there - so obsessed with their procedures they've become totally disconnected from the actual point of what they do - and even that's too much. Poor Willow :aww (Though I think she may be overlooking a good solution - use Faith as a kind of corporate attack dog.) She's really having a tough time, and doubting the worth of the kind of person she is, a geek. I wonder if, somewhere, there's something that might perk her up, and show her that being a geek is good, and e.g. worthy of smoochies? :blush

Thanks re: the chat graphics - actually Sally deserves the thanks, I constructed that template for the chat sequence early in UberCon '05, so this was just a matter of copy/pasting it in and inserting the Geek Love text.

BigBlueEyes

yep, rock on. :lol next part coming right up.

~~~~~
Mystic Twist
Thank you!
~~~~~

willoa_tara_always

Thanks. next part coming up.

~~~~~
Jackie
Yeah, co-workers making the day suck is high on the sucky list. Thanks for reading dear.
~~~~~

willohand

Soon, yes soon. Next part coming right up.

~~~~~
kivrin
No offense taken! Geeks, freaks and dorks are us! Thanks for reading.
~~~~~

lostguardian

Plastic person? Hee. Genuine molded I hope.

~~~~~
dixiedarlin83
Thanks so much! Next part coming up.
~~~~~

Sally

OMG Sally logging in specially. I feel special. I knew you'd get a kick out of the Dar mention. I mean, how can I have a chat with uberqueen and not mention Dar eventually. :P We need to have fanfics that include Dar Williams more often, perhaps we can persuade Car to add it to one of her challenges.

Actually I do feel sorry for Harmony. It's not her fault that she's been trained to be a stickler for details, probably needed to get sign-off from Willow to protect her ass. That convo actually happened to my co-worker once. Not exactly Staples, but an equally well known company -- the issue was ABC Company vs ABC Company Limited. It was as frustrating as it was hilarious. Um, I looked up www.staples.net, it's the résumé of a Kelly Staples of Vallejo, California. :lmao

Don't want to spoil things, but I note that you're interested in Buffy's role in this story. Um, not a lot actually. But your comments have given me some thought, I may expand some of the later chapters. This is why I wanted to post this chapter by chapter, so I can refine and make the story better with readers' comments. Thanks muchly, dear.

~~~~~
db
Oh yes, there is at least one Harmony at every workplace, actually more likely to be a whole department of them. :lol
Glad you caught the Dar mention ... another fan? Sally will be pleased.
Hee about the package. Of course Willow doesn't see it, we have to build suspense. And how much excited when she finally discovers it. Ooops, no spoilers. Next part coming up.
~~~~~

Chris

Oh, use Faith! That's an idea. Though Willow is probably too self-engrossed at this point to think about anyone but herself and her misery. Glad you're liking the side characters. Now of course we know that geeks are good and definitely worthy of many many smoochies, but Willow hasn't see that proof yet. She will, eventually. :lol

I remember the chat graphics for UberCon, but thanks still for using them, does make the story more lifelike. Thanks again.

~~~~~
redjassy
No worries about feedback, I noticed it's a little slow because of the summer hols, but as long as I know people are enjoying the story, I'm happy. Thanks on behalf of Willow for the hugs, she kinda needs them now. Will she be happy about the package? All will be revealed next chapter. Thanks for stopping by.
Title: Geek Love
Author: watty
email: hiddenwatson@gmail.com
Distribution: please email me first
Rating: PG-13 to R
Disclaimers: BtVS characters and concepts belong to Mutant Enemy, Fox, The WB, UPN and others. Densha Otoko characters and concepts belong to Fuji Television, Toho Ltd and others.
Summary: Contemporary AU. Shy geek rescues and falls in love with perfect woman. No, does not compute.
Notes: this is based on the Japanese phenomenon, densha otoko ("train man"), which was supposed to be a true story and which begat a book, several manga series, a film, and a tv series. This is also my first attempt at fluff. Hee.
Notes 2: the IRC channel #geeklove actually exists on irc.blitzed.org, thanks to MistressWashi for setting it up for me.
Part 5
A dream she couldn't remember woke Willow. She had fallen asleep in her street clothes; now they were wrinkly and her mouth felt icky. She was face down on her pillow and half sprawled, half falling off the bed. She stayed in her current position for a few more seconds before slowly pushing herself off the bed, rolling her shoulder to get rid of the stiffness. She dragged herself to the shower, choosing to brush her teeth inside the shower, and changed into pajamas.
She was about to switch the light off when at the corner of her eye she glimpsed the package. It was about half the size of a shoebox, wrapped in plain brown paper and tied up with a thin piece of string. She pulled the string off and ripped the paper clumsily, not caring how where the shreds landed, or that the mailing label was torn in half. All she had in her mind was her miserable day and her inability to better herself. The box was an orange-brown color she had never seen before, she took the lid off and dropped it on the floor.
She lifted the tissue paper lining the inside of the box to reveal its contents. Two tea cups, two saucers of a fine floral design. With a shake of her head and a disappointed sigh she dropped the box on the bed. What was she supposed to do with tea cups? She didn't drink tea, nor was she the sort who used fine china anyway. She was sure that if someone gave her tea leaves she wouldn't know what to do with them. She dismissed it as Faith's idea of a joke or a free gift from a credit card that she didn't need.
She sat at her desk contemplating going back to sleep or switching on her laptop. Normally it would be a no-brainer -- she needed the human interaction with her online friends -- but today she was feeling extra listless, she wasn't sure she'd be good company.
What will the gang be talking about now? If I told them about the tea cups watty will jump up and down in excitement and start telling me how to make tea, I'm sure she'll come up with optimum seeping time or some other statistical analysis. Sally or Cam will make a smartass comment about my lack of culture. Car will tell me to sell them on ebay and she'll give me advice on how much they will bring. They are good people.
She got up from her chair and headed toward her bed; she was careful not to step on the box, but couldn't help tripping over the crumpled pile of wrapping and tissue paper. Her foot almost slipped on an envelope that was buried underneath.
Gingerly she picked it up and ran her fingertips slowly over the thick paper, as if willing it to tell her who it was from, what was inside and the intentions of the sender. It resolutely refused to give up its secret. Her attention turned to the neat female handwriting on the envelope.
Could it be?
To: Ms Willow Rosenberg. From: T. Maclay. She flipped through her mental rolodex, which had very few entries anyway, but couldn't think of any T. Maclays.
She threw herself on her bed and began to read the letter inside.
Please accept this small gift as a token of my appreciation. You were very brave the other day on the train, I hope you have recovered from your injuries.
Willow's eyes grew wider and her mouth dropped. It was the pretty girl! She recalled how the girl had tended to her nosebleed and the soft skin that brushed against her own, fleetingly. It was an image that hadn't left her mind since Sunday.
The package!
She fell off her bed to the floor with a thud, as she quickly retrieved the scattered wrapping paper and tried to smooth out the dent that she had made on the cardboard of the box.
"How could I be so careless?" she chastised herself. "Dammit, Will, you're such a spaz. Something precious like this comes into your life and you dismiss it because you don't know how to appreciate it."
With trembling hands she retrieved the shipping label, which had been torn in half, and saw her own address as well as that of the sender.
"I have to let everyone know!"
Big news! I have big news!
Whoa, Red. Slow down.
Must be something important to get you all worked up like this
Remember the incident on the train? The pretty girl sent me a thank you present
The one who's beautiful like an amazon?
*swoons* yes
*harley puts bucket underneath Willow to catch the drool
lol make sure it's a non drip bucket, cupcake
lol
lol
hey!
so, details please Will
*historygeek pulls up a beanbag and joins sleepy cyd and dozy Sally in the kuddly korner
huh?
cyd and sally are "resting," ignore them, we're listening
how much detail?
as much as you think we can bear, which is a lot
we'll elaborate and exaggerate as you go along, don't worry about that
alright, let's see ... it was a hand delivered package and it contained two tea cups and saucers. Very English, like the ones you see on Pride and Prejudice
mmmKeira
uh oh, do we need to make space for watty's dreamin'?
no, no dreaming ... listening
anyway at first I'm thinking who is sending me these ... things? Can't they send me something I need instead, like creative suite CS3 when it comes out or a new Mina DVD? but I read the letter inside and wow! the paper is so soft and it smells so nice, mmmmm I'm blushing like an idiot
you're imagining the scent, what does the letter say?
it says it's a small token of appreciation for my bravery the other night and she hopes I'm recovered from my nosebleed
awww how sweet (awake now)
sally's back
*uberqueen stretches, being careful not to reveal too much cleavage
nice rack, Sally
lol
lmao
stop staring at sally's rack you perverts, Willow needs to continue with her story
my apologies, my boobs are too big for the room and obscured Willow's story
I won't, um, mention anything about Sally's rack ... back to the package
yes let's talk more about packages and assets
did you get her name and contact details?
she speaks!!!
um yes, if it's a courier delivery there will be a phone number on the label
cyd you're a genius
that's why we all have a giant crush on her
oh no, please
I don't think Car speaks for all of us, we're fond of you, but not everyone has a "giant" "crush"
or giant turtle/dove mutated villains
speaking of, did Willow get swallowed by a giant robot-sized hole?
may be she got squashed by the gigantic cleavage of the wonder lesbians
or Deanna Troi's "assets"
how did we get from Willow's package to Deanna Troi's, um, package?
lol
lol, everything gets to boobies eventually
we're the paragons of maturity ... BOOBIESBOOBIESBOOBIES
okay back, how did the convo move so quickly to boobies?
wb, did you fall into a giant robot-sized hole?
no I went to look for the shipping label and ... there *is* a phone no!!!
why don't you give her a call?
yeah, call her
nononono, I can't call a woman on the phone, however perfect and sexy she is
we're at "sexy" now? I thought she was "beautiful" and "perfect" ... when did this get bumped up five notches on the ratings scale? Have you been "having thoughts"?
and how many more quotation marks can I put in a sentence
you love your proper punctuation don't you
*coughsemicolonfearcough*
grrrr
stop bickering you two, we need to get back to Willow calling her perfect woman
word. call her!
Willow should call the girl to say thank you
I can't! what do I do?
I'll make it simple: are you holding the shipping label in your hands?
yes
1) pick up phone; 2) press the buttons corresponding to the numbers on that slip of paper; 3) say "thank you for the tea cups"
I won't know what to say
worry about what to say *when* you have her on the phone
that doesn't work
tell her you wanted to call personally to thank her for the tea cups, then talk about what happened on the train, build some common ground
I'm too nervous, I don't think I'll be able to speak properly
it's okay if Willow doesn't call *today*, right?
how about a letter?
yeah it's late, wait till tomorrow
I won't mind if I were her. I'd feel flattered at the attention, and impressed that you took the trouble to call
it *is* late ... may be I should call tomorrow
nothing like the present, you should act when you can ... she who hesitates is lost etc
.
.
.
did I scare her off? killed chat? come in Willow
I'm holding my cellphone, my hands are shaking, I can't do it. this takes a lot more courage than the time on the train. that was spontaneous
we're behind you Will
yes we are, geeks united!
remember, the girl is out there on her own, but you have all of us
*sniffs* I'm so touched. dialing now
.
.
.
.
.
.
um guys, you sure I can't write her a letter instead?
no!
no!!
*historygeek falls to floor in despair
if you write her a letter, you correspond politely for may be a few exchanges and that's it, no chance of it leading to anything. you do want it to lead to something don't you?
plus what if she doesn't write back? then ... nothing
sigh, I can't do the call folks :paranoid
consider this, she sent you a *pair* of tea cups, there must be a meaning behind it
nah, that's reading too much, these gifts come in a set usually don't they? watty?
yeah usually even numbers. are they pretty?
yes, in a English countryside sort of way and we're reading way too much into the fact that there are *two* cups
oh, this hasn't come up ... what brand?
well, it's in french, hermes with a funny accent on the second e
SCORE!!!
*gasps*
*historygeek falls to floor again
Hermes, that's the handbag brand? I didn't know they did kitchenware
yes they do, but not as big business as their leather (heh, I said leather)
I'm resisting the temptation to say anything about leather in the interest of the topic of the convo
life is so hard
I think of hermes and I think naked models (sorry) [author's note: NSFW]
she wouldn't choose Hermes just to say thanks, it's way too posh for a simple thank you
more reason to make the call now
I agree, call her now
call her, woman
we'll be on standby, advise you as you talk to her, how's that
what do you have to lose?
Image
omg, cyd
that's for you, Willow. you know what to do
thank you thank you. I'll call her now. I'll report tomorrow. Night all.
night!
night Willow. H&H&S
good-night
watty pants!!
Loved the update -- I especially like the moment of insecurity w/ reaching out to her friends/feeling like she isn't good company. Definately had moments were I can relate to that...
But again, it is the chat stuff that brings this story to genious level. Heh. Your chat stuff kills me. Every time. It is hillarious and witty, plus there is boob talk...
Boobies. How *does* it descend into boobie talk so rapidly?
I loved the description of the packages - the brown paper with the thin string and the orange box... I could really picture it in my mind.
Glad you caught the Dar mention ... another fan? Sally will be pleased.
Well argh there matey! (Sorry, I'm still recovering from a pirate party last night . . . ) So I apologize for not fb'ing for the last chapter. And to make it up voila, je suis ici. Now I know how before I said that I absolutely adored the chatroom "scenes," but I will have to rescind it. I hate it. Just kidding! :party I don't think I could possibly love it more. Grammar, boobies? If only life were as such (I'm not quite sure that made sense but it sounded nice in my head). If this is what all kitten chats are like, sign me up! Or, uh, in.
Your description of the mysterious package in this chapter, last chapter (?) made me feel so bad. For the package. It seemed so lonely, calling out for someone, maybe a geeky redhead, to open it. I could just hear it pleading, "Unwrap me! Open my ties! Look within my depths!" As most "packages" do.
Okay well I'm going to quit this fb before I am reduced to plain old dirty dirty dirty double entendres. Can't wait for the phone call (literally. I already read it. :rofl)
See ya! :wave
P.S. thanks for the embrace emoticon. HA!
Watty,
Part 3 (late, sorry)
As I said in e-mail, I love the post-modern commentary. You’ve captured the cynicism, mythology, and excitement of chat so well. And of course Will has this assortment as friends. Tee hee.
"Well, you know there are people who like those geek types. They're supposed to be harmless, more loyal than a puppy and they fix your computer," Cordy added.
Lol! Love it. Great place to break the part. Tee hee.
Part 4
Sally's Dar love knows no bounds. Hi Willow
No kidding.
Willow was so brave last night, she rescued a fair maiden from an evil drunk demon and as a result said fair maiden asked for her address so she could send over a thank you gift befitting such a heroic act
Ok, what I love here is your conceit allows you to insert some really great lines into the fic. I mean if it was just third-person narrator, you couldn’t get away from it but bunch of (whispering (geeks)) and it’s easy to get in reasonably. (The preceding sentence was not meant to offend any geeks. Any similarities to an offensive sentence is purely coincidental). I can’t imagine where you got the idea for the Harmony conversation? Anything like that really? Hmmm.
Poor Willow. Such a crummy day and such a bleak outlook.
Part 5 – Tea cups? An interesting gift. A little suggestive and intimate but also distant.
yes let's talk more about packages and assets
Tee hee.
Awesome chat.
Sorry for not more extensive comments but I really am loving it.
Oh, the chatting is *sooo* funny. I almost laughed out loud, but since I'm at work I restrained myself. I really love this story and I can't wait for more! Willow's geekiness knows no bounds-it's very endearing. I can definitely relate to that. (I always just tell people that I'm lucky that my fiance thinks that dork is kinda sexy otherwise I'd be in trouble. And probably alone... ;-) )
More please!
watty, I'm so sorry for once again forgetting to leave feedback for the last update. Geez, I'm only 22 and my mind's already starting to go.
Anyways, I just wanna say that I really feel for Willow in dealing with Harmony and Faith. It's not easy putting up with morons who just don't know when to quit. (Not that Faith or Harmony were being stupid, but...well, it's never a good idea to get Willow all rattled.)
Speaking of which, it's good that Willow's got some friends that can help her get together with Tara. (Nice present, BTW.)
Can't wait for the next chapter.
Hello, wattypanties! Another cliffhanger. Gah! You know, when I was reading your draft version months ago I think this is where I left off, so now I'm REALLY going to be reading something new each chapter, which is fabulous. I'm glad Willow called Tara - although part of me wants to know what time it is, because it might be kinda late.
If I had been in chat with hiddenred, and not just my alter ego, the large-breasted uberqueen, I would have suggested that she invite Tara over for tea! Cheezy but appropriate. And Hermes - the Tiffany's of England, eh? Or something like that?
Geeks united! It's like we're a soccer team. That reminds me, I did a presentation at a conference last week and made a couple of humorous references to Galaga (the old video game) and I had a picture of Commander Data from Star Trek on my powerpoint when I was talking about data integration, and a person who was at the workshop came up afterward and said "I kept whispering 'geek' under my breath" (she meant it in a nice way). Long-winded way of saying: Geeks rule!
I'm SOOOOOOOO anticipating the next chapter, and am pacing myself to not go read it right now on your site.
great post.. im really loving this. as far as this:
lostguardian
Plastic person? Hee. Genuine molded I hope.
I more meant all those people that strive to be nothing but just like the "in" person to be. They go for what a true sterotype is and wear the badge with pride. Just I know for myself Id rather be alone and true to me then just like everyone else with fake friends. Guess thats why few people are in my world lol.. id invite more, but i seem to find its hard to find people to join and accept my humor is sarcastic and im not meant to be taken seriously. God knows I dont take me serious.
keep up the amazing work I look forward to more.
Hee, ascii art! Man, that takes me back...
Willow's personality really comes across through the chat log, especially the crippling anxiety at actually calling Tara. I'm sure I'm not the only geek who knows that feeling. And I really liked how she panicked over having torn the wrapping paper, that's so Willow :x
Boy, I'm really late to this party. I finally sat down to start reading Geek Love this morning and I got so caught up in it that I've been sneaking away right and left to read more. Now, alas, I've caught up and actually need to wait for the next update. In the words of Inigo Montoya: I hate waiting.
Because I cheated (sorta) and read *GL* on Chris' site, I haven't read the Kitten feedback. I'm guessing that 90% of what I say is going to be redundant. But hey, it's heartfelt redundancy....
First, I love who Willow is in this fic. You've taken the insecurity of canon S1 Willow and inserted it into a recent (I'm guessing) college grad. I can totally imagine a Willow who remained locked behind a wall of insecurity throughout high school and college, even after she came out.
Second, I'm captured by the power of your writing. I was *there* during the subway scene and I *felt* the timidity, fear, protectiveness, and rage all welling up inside Willow during the assault sequence.
Third, I'm struck by the uber-ness of this story (and I'm not talking about the fact that Cordy and Tara are friends, although, wow.) The story is set in Sunnydale, but it feels more like it's set in another country. There's a subway, which is clearly the major form of transportation; the rich use it as well as the middle-class/working class. (That lets out most cities except NYC.) The subway is crowded, even in the evening hours. The car Willow sits is filled with people of all sorts (which could be NYC, the city of my youth), and everyone is trying to ignore/avoid the young couple groping each other (which leaves out NYC, where few people would care, if for no other reason than it would take too much energy..) The car is filled with "chattering women" who subsequently want to send Willow a gift for her bravery (which again let's out NYC. We'd thank her--even clasp her on the shoulder--but we'd never send her a thank you gift...) And then there are subway officers who *show up*, are polite, and bring Willow and Tara to their office to get their info and statements. This is not like any American city I've ever spent time in, but it does remind me a little of London and Paris. Or perhaps Japan (chattering women, thank you gifts, clear social hierarchies). In any event, this is an exceptionally long way around to saying that I like the place you've created....
I look forward to reading more!
BigBlueEyes
LOL. Willow is still the shy geek, but fret not, more shortly.
~~~~~

shane

Thank you! :blush at the praise. Glad you're enjoying the read.

:bigwave I have to admit that Willow the geek chatter is based on me and my chat buddies. We do have a small community where we support each other, and where we can turn to. The boobie talk is the kb chat that I remember, when I first did chat. Things have changed because people have moved on, but those were fond memories for me. Thanks for your support and stopping by.

~~~~~
beanie
hey pirate beanie, welcome back. :wave A lot of the chat stuff is based on real kb chat, though mostly in the past when there were more people in chat. The dynamics of the regulars change season to season, there is no right or wrong, better or worse, just what I have fond memories of. Your description of the lonely package calling out for its owner is so apt, I can really see it, and of course admonishing myself that I didn't have that idea. :lol
~~~~~

Elvis aka Justskippy

Hi hi! No worries. And I get it about the post-modernism, you know I learnt from the best. *bats eyelids* I hope that it doesn't matter that the readers don't always get the inside jokes, though how "inside" are they, that's up for discussion. Sally's Dar love is rather well known though. :)

re: conceit of inserting certain phrases under the guise of chat. Good point. It also allows me to be precise and, well, succinct, in the story. There are lots that I'm not showing, I want to leave it to ther readers' imagination. Convo with Harmony about staples.com? A similar convo did happen with my colleague and our finance department, I kid you not.

Knowing how busy you are, I really appreciate your taking the time and leaving feedback. Thank you and hugs to the family.

~~~~~
highlandlass25
Awww, sorry that you have to restrain yourself with the laughter. We need more laughs at the workplace! The chat is based on my own experience in chat ... good times.
~~~~~

Jackie

You should know about the chats! And thank you for taking it one chapter at a time, I did take your advice. LOL about cliffhangers, it is a kind of requirement here on pens you know. :P Will Willow chicken out, or she finds courage to dial Tara? Read on my dear!

~~~~~
Sith
Thanks for stopping by Alex, always appreciate it. Harmony and Faith are difficult characters aren't they, especially for a softie like Willow. Yes, fortunate that she has her online friends, I think it resonates with a few of us, that our online frends have become our RL friends.
~~~~~

Sally aka uberqueen

Oh cool, I think chapter 5 or 6 was where I left off when I had my hiatus while writing, you're right.

'm glad Willow called Tara - although part of me wants to know what time it is, because it might be kinda late.

hee, she hasn't actually gotten through yet. Oh, a little secret to knowing what date and time it is, the chat tells you:

[blockquote][20.35] Connecting ...

[21.52] *** Disconnected from IRC [/blockquote]She logged in at 8.35pm and logged out at 9.52pm. You know I'd be obsessing about details like these. :glasses

I had been in chat with hiddenred, and not just my alter ego, the large-breasted uberqueen, I would have suggested that she invite Tara over for tea!

Are you sure you only read up to chapter 5? :P

We need to start a new chant. Geeks United, ra, ra, ra!

~~~~~
willohand
Thanks. Glad you're enjoying the chat and the story.
lostguardian
Thanks! Hope you like the next chapter.
Chris aka smutbunnies
Oh goodie, someone recognises ascii art. Fun stuff, we should stage an ascii art revival. :lol Oh, talking about ascii art, check out this newest t-shirt from thinkgeek:
Yes there really is way too much of our (my) own geekiness in this Willow, I'm thinking my readers can easily put themselves in her shoes. Thanks Chris.
~~~~~

simplyblue

Hi and welcome. No worries, and thank you for taking the time to read. I'm updating weekly so I hope it isn't such a long wait between chapters. You make an excellent observation about this Sunnydale. The story is based on a Japanese movie/TV series, which was originally set in Tokyo. I wanted a city larger than the Sunnydale that we know, yet has gentler aspects. I mean, who writes and sends thank-you presents to strangers anymore? IEven though there are pockets in NYC which has a small town community feel, I guess in 'our' world I'd say it's closer to a village-y city like Zurich and yes, London and Paris. LOL I set the fic in a quaint European city subconsciously, heehee.

Is it wrong of me to lust after someone who lusts after Dar?

Such is the power of Dar that no, I think it's not wrong. But if we're targeting uberqueen I'm thinking Mrs uberqueen may have something to say on the subject. :lmao

Disclaimers: BtVS characters and concepts belong to Mutant Enemy, Fox, The WB, UPN and others. Densha Otoko characters and concepts belong to Fuji Television, Toho Ltd and others.
Summary: Contemporary AU. Shy geek rescues and falls in love with perfect woman. No, does not compute.
Notes: this is based on the Japanese phenomenon, densha otoko ("train man"), which was supposed to be a true story and which begat a book, several manga series, a film, and a tv series. This is also my first attempt at fluff. Hee.
Notes 2: the IRC channel #geeklove actually exists on irc.blitzed.org, thanks to MistressWashi for setting it up for me.

Part 6

"Can I get you anything to drink, Tara?"

"Orange juice please, thanks Charles."

"Do you come here often?"

"No, I'm not a big fan of clubs."

"Then I'm doubly glad you're here with me. You don't know how many times I've wanted to ask you."

"Well I should be the one who is flattered. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

"Directly to the point, I like that. I'll be straight with you, Tara. I want to be the number one Product Head in the whole West Coast and I want you to join my team."

"Wow, thank you for thinking of me."

"Is that a yes?"

"Can I think about it?"

"Yes, but this is not an open-ended offer."

"How long do I have?"

"Smart. By the end of the evening, when we leave this club, I want an answer from you. Now tell me, are you sure orange juice is strong enough?"

"Yes, I want to keep a clear head."

"Fine. I'll get our drinks then."

Tara watched the tall man who was her ... date? no, more like colleague and potential boss ... walk purposefully to the bar and ordered the drinks. Charles Gunn was one of the hottest product managers in her company and a place in his team was highly coveted. Tara knew that anyone in her position should be chomping at the bit, but she was happy in her current team, her boss treated her very well and she had heard about how everyone in Charles' team competed against each other. They had a reputation for being ruthless and unscrupulous. She wasn't sure if she would fit in.

brrrring brrrring

"One orange juice, sorry for the wait," Charles returned with drinks firmly in his hands.

"Not at all, thank you," Tara replied.

brrrring brrrring

"So how do you like this club?"

"It's better than some I've been to, although my experience of clubs is limited," she said, taking a small sip from the glass.

brrrring brrrring

"You'll have a chance to go out more, Tara. Network. Clients love being entertained."

"I thought I have until the end of the evening to decide."

brrrring brrrring

"Touché."

There was something niggling at the back of Tara's mind, as if needing her attention. She couldn't quite put her finger on it though.

brrrring brrrring

"Are you going to answer that?" Charles nodded at the metallic object a little way away from Tara's elbow.

"Oh! My phone! I didn't hear it."

She reached out to retrieve her cellphone, currently engaged in a spastic dance for her attention. She glanced at the display, the number on the caller display was unfamiliar, and she generally made it a rule to let unknown numbers go to voicemail so she could screen out the unwanted callers or junk calls. It had been ringing for a while and it would jump to voicemail any second. Later Tara could not say accurately why she picked up.

"Hello."

*****

"Umm, hhhhello," Willow managed to stammer out.

"You have reached the voicemail of Tara Maclay, please leave a message after the tone."

For a moment Willow thought she had connected to the girl, and was thrown when she discovered it was voicemail.

"Aaaaah, uuummm, t-t-this is Willow Rosenberg. Cups! Thank you for the cups, that’s right. I'm calling you to thank-- ow!!! How come tables have such hard corners? Oh yikes, sorry, that wasn't meant for you. Um, Tara, is it? I want to say--"

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

She was interrupted by the high pitched beep that signified the end of the recording, swiftly to be replaced by the flat ringtone of a line that was cut off. She rang off in a wave of disappointment.

It was late at night, and she wondered what Tara would be doing that took her away from her cellphone. It didn't take long for her over-active imagination to start painting impossible scenarios.

[blockquote]
Cue Righteous Brothers.

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time,
Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?

Two sets of hands working on a piece of wet clay on a potter's wheel, gently pressing and squeezing it into shape. The camera panned out to Tara in a sleeveless white shirt spooned in front of Patrick Swayze while one of them worked the foot pedal that rotated the wheel. His arms were wrapped around her and her back pressed into his shirtless chest.

brrrring brrrring

Tara reached out to answer her cellphone, sitting just out of reach of the couple.

"No," Patrick said. "Don't answer that. You're all mine tonight."

He brought Tara's hands back to the clay to re-shape it.

brrrring brrrring

Tara leaned back to gaze at Patrick's eyes as he leaned in --
[/blockquote]

"No!!" Willow shouted, her mind full of the sounds and images of a crumbled piece of clay spinning forlornly on a potter's wheel. "No, her fingers aren't entwined in Patrick Swayze's as they mold wet clay. She's busy with something else."

Slowly another image built in her konfuzzled mind.

[blockquote]
Darkness. Obsession. Despair.

An injured and stricken Tara was tied up in a bed in the middle of Colorado. A look of terror as the bedroom door opened and Kathy Bates walked in with a hammer.

"You'll never know the fear of losing someone like you when you're someone like me," Kathy said calmly.

Tara struggled and tried to inch away from Kathy, but all she succeeded in doing was tighten the bonds around her wrists.

brrrring brrrring

"Please let me answer my phone," she pleaded to Kathy.

Kathy's eyes were wild and her lips a tight grim line as she lifted the hammer, about to strike --
[/blockquote]

"Aaaaaaahhh!" Willow yelped. She had to stop thinking unpleasant thoughts. She looked at the computer and considered checking in with her online group, but they were bound to interrogate her on calling Tara and she felt like a failure for not getting through.

It was time for bed. The day's excitement finally caught up with her and suddenly her whole body felt heavy. She was still holding her cellphone. Normally she'd place it on the charger overnight, but tonight she brought it to bed with her. It made her feel a little closer to the mystery woman who was Tara Maclay.

*****

"You're late again, Chief!" Willow's friends, the two young boys, ran up to her on her way to work, as they did almost every day.

"Sorry sorry. Let's see what you have here?" She squatted down and was immediately handed the PSP for inspection.

"We don't know how to get out of the flea market," one of the boys said.

It only took Willow a few seconds to find the solution.

"Go to the large tent, ask the man with the flute about his girlfriend," she explained. "People like talking about their girlfriends, he'll tell you but you have to listen to him for a few screens."

"You're right. Thank you," the boys said. "Hey Chief, do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend?" they asked as they ran off toward their school bus.

"Huh?" Willow was taken aback.

"Shhh, don't ask. If you say something wrong, she won't help us with the game," she heard one boy tell the other.

Willow took out her cellphone and brought up the last number dialed. It showed Tara Maclay's number; she had already programmed the name in. "A girlfriend," she mused. "Don't be ridiculous, Rosenberg."

*****

"How did the date with Charles go?" Cordy pounced on Tara as soon as she arrived at the office next morning.

"Morning Cordy, you're in early. Unusually early," Tara greeted the brunette just as she settled into her desk and powered up her computer.

"Don't change the subject, I want to know why Charles Gunn took you to Delaney's last night but most importantly, why you agreed. Is there something going on between you two?"

Tara looked mildly irritated at the insinuation. "Cordy, you have an unusual knack of thinking the worst of people. It was a business meeting, he asked me to join his team," she clarified.

The shot of envy that passed through Cordy's face was plain to see, even though she quickly hid it. "Oh my god, that's wonderful! Do you know how prestigious it is to be in his group? They get the fattest bonuses, the best offices and the most important clients! You must have caught someone's notice," Cordy almost squealed in delight.

"I'm going to be noticed alright. I turned him down," Tara said.

Cordy stopped her celebration abruptly. "Are you nuts? You do NOT turn down Charles Gunn, you trying to commit career suicide?" her squeal turned into a shriek.

"I like my job now, and Jenny treats me better than he will ever do," Tara said resolutely.

"He can destroy you, and by association, me. Did you even think of that?" Cordy asked.

Tara looked at her friend exasperatedly. "No I didn't. The world doesn't revolve around you, Cordy," she sighed.

"My world does," Cordy challenged.

Tara took the option she always took when Cordy got too much for her. She started busying herself with her tasks and soon Cordy grew bored of waiting for Tara to answer and stomped back to her own cubicle.

Upon checking her cellphone, Tara discovered that she had a voicemail message. At first she wasn't sure who the stuttering mumbler was but she soon figured out it was the redhead who saved her from the drunken old man on the train. She smiled warmly at the memory of the petite girl taking on someone larger and more violent than herself.

The message was largely incoherent and Willow seemed to be able to speak without taking a breath. Even then the recording was cut off because she took too long. Tara noted the number for Willow and hit 'dial'.

At the office building on the other side of the park, Willow's cellphone rang. As luck (or misfortune) would have it, she was engaged in a conversation with her boss, being told that she had to attend a company dinner with clients that night. She watched the phone vibrate, then ring, then jerkily breakdance across her desk's surface. And in disbelief as Faith picked it up and switched it off before it had a chance to go to voicemail. She rushed back to her desk as soon as the conversation ended and almost dropped the phone when she saw she had missed Tara.

"I can't call her out here in the open office, I need privacy. Think, think," she was so intent on her task that she didn't notice the strange looks her colleagues were giving her as she ran around while muttering to herself.

"Aha!" She finally found a solution, and hid herself inside the stationery cupboard. She switched the dim fluorescent light on and was about to call Tara back when the phone rang by itself, making her jump.

She glanced at the display and seriously contemplated not answering, but relented. "What do you want, Faith?"

"Why are you streaking around like a headless chicken? Bosses got you by the tail again?" She could hear Faith's smirk over the phone.

"Well, no help from you," Willow pointed out.

"I'll ignore that comment. What I want to ask, Willow, is who is this 'Tara' calling you? Some hot chick?"

"None of your business," Willow retorted.

"Hot damn. You find a hot chick and you forget your friends. I'm hurt," Faith continued.

"You're not my friend."

Beep beep.

Call waiting.

"Burn! You're getting better at this sarcasm business, I should take credit for training you."

"Wait, wait, Faith. I have a call on the other line," Willow was all a-flustered.

"So? They can call back when I'm finished," Faith directed.

Beep beep.

Willow risked a glance at the display. Tara!

"Please, Faith," she pleaded. "I really have another call."

"Just ignore it."

"I can't!"

"If you hang up on me now, I'll tell the bosses about the smut fics you have on your hard drive."

Beep beep.

"How did y--? Never mind, what do you want?"

"Get all serious on me now. I want to know if my presence is required for the dinner tonight because I have plans with the softball team. The entire softball team."

"I don't know, they didn't say."

"Well if they didn't specifically ask for me, I'm not going. You'll cover for me won't you?"

"Um ..."

"Sure you will."

The beeping had stopped. Willow checked the display and it was blank. Tara had rung off. Then suddenly the entire phone went silent.

"Faith?"

No response. Faith had disappeared too.

"Stupid." This was directed half at herself for being a wimp and half at Faith for being her usual inconsiderate self.

The door to the room opened suddenly and she blinked at the brightness that invaded her hideout.

"Oh sorry," a co-worker entered the stationery room in search of, well, stationery. The room was far too small for more than two people and Willow excused herself to find another private place to call Tara.

Eventually she found herself on the roof, at the opposite end to where the smokers were enjoying their break. She rounded a corner and made sure no one was within hearing distance.

With trembling fingers she hit the key combination that brought up Tara's number. It was now or never. She took a deep breath and prepared to hit 'send'.

The screen went blank.

She couldn't believe it.

She shook the phone, and tried to hit all the keys, to no avail.

"What the frilly heck?"

Finally it came back on again, only to flash [font=courier]Battery level low[/font] before blanking out again.

"No, no, no. Why now? Why me?" She was becoming frantic.

Then it hit her. She hadn't charged the phone last night, she had taken it with her to bed to be closer to Tara, and now the battery was flat. How could she be so stupid?

She and Tara had been playing phone tag all day, and now this. May be it was fated that they would never speak.

She found that thought truly horrifying.

Dibs!

ETA: Argh, one of those most frustrating comedies of errors and missed chances to connect, complete with an annoying person who, whether intentionally or unintentionally, prevents them from speaking to each other. That would be both Faith and Gunn, I think, in this episode.

You're right, watty, by the way, I had read this chapter before. Maybe this is where I left off? I'm not sure if I told you, but I love love love the whole Willow imagining Tara with Patrick Swayze a la Ghost and with Kathy Bates a la Misery. Brilliant! I laughed out loud.

The other nuggets in here are wonderful as well - Tara turning Gunn down, Willow getting treated poorly by her bosses, or at least ordered around, and the crowning glory of her phone losing its batteries. Although being in IT, does she have an extra charger in the office, do you think? Could she call Tara from her land line? I guess not if the phone won't power up now, but anyway. They must speak soon! :)
