Dearest Kittens~

I come to you hanging my head in shame. :aww It was not Cam who told me to read this fic. I thought it was. And I posted my reply before verifying. And for this I should be punnished.

So, Cam....please accept my sincerest apologies and most heartfelt gratitude for not immediately taking my name in vain.

Instead, let me say the following:

IT WAS WASHI'S FAULT!!! *SHE* IS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME TO READ IT!!!

Thank you for your time, Kittens.

Augh! I saw this bumped to the top and read it, fell in love, got to the end, and...

Nothing! *tear*

It's really good, I hope it gets finished sometime.

Hey,

I know what it's like to be halfway through a fic and let real life get in the way... (believe me.) It's hard to go back to what you were writing three years ago, it's hard to keep fighting through to finish. That being said, I really like this, and really hope you finish it at some point. (And if you do, you email me immediately to let me know!)

I wasn't sure at first that Tara's character could really stand up to being 1) in a band and 2) a "burnout" as she puts it... but the truth is, the way you write her, she's really believable. I dig it.

I've already said a few times this week that I love AU, and that is no less true about this fic than any other. It's my favorite kind and you were writing it so well... to leave us off before we get the big payoff of all of Tara's past sins and Willow's acceptance of them.

Please finish. It would be like the best thing ever.

So I was digging around in some of my old stuff the other day and came across this stack of discs onto which I had burned info from an old computer. I knew it was from three computers ago and probably held some long lost secret to my life. And I stumble upon this unfinished story I started so very long ago. Four and a half years I've been away from it. Lots of moves, a few job changes, and a lot of trying to grow up found their way into that span of time, and here I am thinking I should wrap up unfinished business. So here I am attempting to do that. Maybe it won't be as good as it once was. Maybe I've been away from it for too long. I guess it won't hurt to find out.

Track 22: Glory of Love (From “Karate Kid 2”) by A New Found Glory
Part D

Willow woke early in the morning to find a warm body tangled with her own. When she opened her eyes she was face to face with a still very much asleep Tara. Well, actually she was only looking at half of Tara’s face, as the blonde had the back of her own hand smashed against the other half. Willow blinked her bleary eyes and grinned. Her girlfriend always did funny things in her sleep.

After a few minutes of watching, Willow decided to get out of bed and get a head start on gathering her things for the trip. When she tried to pull her arm out from under her pillow, she realized that somehow she and Tara had ended up with their heads sharing the same pillow, and Tara’s head had Willow’s forearm pinned. Gently she tried to extract it, but Tara’s nose wrinkled up in distaste causing her to stop.

A very light knock came at the door, and Willow lifted her head a little bit. She almost said ‘Come in,’ but looked uneasily at the sleeping blonde and stopped herself. A second later, Shelia’s head poked into the room and Willow raised a finger to her lips indicating for her mother to stay quiet.

Shelia crept closer to the bed so she wouldn’t have to talk loudly. “Are you getting up soon?” she whispered, seeing that Tara was still asleep.

“I’m trapped,” Willow mouthed back to her mother as she looked in the direction of where her right arm was under the pillow.

Smiling, Shelia whispered, “I’m starting breakfast, so when you’re up it’s there.” At Willow’s nod she crept back out of the room still smiling.

In the kitchen, Shelia began gathering the assortment of fresh fruit she’d bought the night before. She was running a colander full of grapes under the faucet as Ira stumbled in and toward the refrigerator.

“Sleep okay?” Shelia asked.

Ira only grunted and nodded his head up and down for a second before reaching for a carton of orange juice.

Shelia kept with her task and didn’t ask anything else. It was always a toss up on whether or not her husband would be having a talkative morning or a silent morning. He usually had silent mornings. She looked up in surprise when she heard his scratchy voice.

“Are the girls up?” Ira set the glass of juice he’d poured on the counter and moved back to the refrigerator to put the carton away.

Shelia smiled a bit as she switched the grapes for strawberries in need of washing. “Willow’s awake, but Tara’s still asleep.”

Ira caught his wife’s expression and grinned himself. “What are you smiling about?” He stepped over to the sink where Shelia stood and wrapped his arms around her from behind.

Shutting off the water, Shelia leaned her head back against her husband’s chest. “Did you see how happy Willow looked last night?”

“Mmmhmm,” Ira murmured. “Tara too.”

“So having met her, does she have your seal of approval?” Shelia asked as she reached up to hold onto her husband’s arms.

Ira laughed. “My seal of approval?”

Rubbing her hands up and down Ira’s sleeves, Shelia replied, “You know how much Willow values your opinion.”

“I know, and yes, darling, Tara has my seal of approval,” Ira confirmed. He punctuated his statement with a kiss to his wife’s cheek, but pulled back suddenly when he noticed his forearms felt damp. “What the…?”

Shelia was discreetly wiping her wet hands on Ira’s pajama sleeves so she didn’t have to reach nearly five feet away for a towel. She laughed loudly when she knew she was caught and pulled out of his embrace to run away, but his arms kept her in place.

Ira reached out to turn on the faucet and began splashing water toward his wife in what would be the beginning to a water fight between them.

After her mother left the room, Willow gave up any hope of freeing her arm and went back to Tara-watching. The slight noise in the room must have roused her because only a few moments later, Tara began to show signs of climbing toward wakefulness. Her nose twitched and her exposed eyelid fluttered before blinking open slowly.

Tara peeled her hand away from her face and opened her other eye. Her vision was unfocused, but Tara could make out Willow and grinned lazily. “Hey,” she attempted, but her vocal chords hadn’t completely woken up causing her voice to crack.

“Puberty’s a bitch, huh?” Willow kidded.

Tara rolled her eyes but didn’t say anything. Instead she worked on clearing her throat. After a moment she tried again. “Hey.”

Willow leaned in for a quick good-morning kiss before replying, “Hey. Sleep okay?”

Tara couldn’t stop the yawn that crept up on her and covered her mouth to stifle it as she nodded slowly up and down. “Your bed’s cozy,” she finally managed.

“Any bed with you in it is cozy,” the redhead replied.

Tara raised a skeptical eyebrow and teasingly asked, “Are you trying to suck up?”

Willow waggled her eyebrows. “I don’t know. Is it working?” she asked with a flirtatious leer.

“Maaaaybeee.” Tara dragged the word out as she leaned toward Willow to capture the redhead’s lips.

Willow let out a happy moan as her lips clashed with Tara’s.

The two women hadn’t been kissing long when both heard a loud shriek from downstairs. Instantly they pulled apart and looked wide-eyed at each other for a brief moment before clumsily tumbling out of the bed and racing downstairs.

At the bottom of the steps, both women heard squeals coming from the kitchen and followed the noise to investigate. Willow and Tara both stopped dead in their tracks at the doorway to the kitchen. The sight in front of them was shocking.

“Oh. My. God.” Willow’s jaw hung wide open after uttering the words. Her father was trying to hold onto her mother as he shot her with the faucet’s sprayer. Both her parents were dripping with water and laughing.

Tara stared slack-jawed as well. When she first heard the shriek from upstairs, she expected something horrible had happened. Seeing Willow’s parents laughing and having what appeared to be a water fight caused her brain to one-eighty, leaving her unsure of what to say or do.

Out of the corner of his eye, Ira saw someone in the doorway and froze his movements. Shelia froze as well, and both turned their heads toward Willow and Tara. While Shelia smiled sheepishly, Ira smiled brightly and proclaimed, “Good morning!”

Shelia and Ira went to change their wet clothes, leaving Willow and Tara at the kitchen table to ponder the situation.

“Are your parents always so…” Tara searched for the right word. “Playful?”

“You mean embarrassing?” Willow was used to her parents goofing around. They’d always been, as Tara put it, playful for as long as she could remember, just never in front of other people.

“I don’t know,” Tara said. “I think it was kind of cute. And now I know where you get all your cuteness from.” She winked and proceeded to run her foot up Willow’s leg under the table mimicking the move the redhead had attempted the night before.

Willow only gulped and smiled weakly in response.

It didn’t take long for Willow’s parents to return to the kitchen in fresh clothes. They joined the girls at the table for an enjoyable breakfast before Willow and Tara headed back upstairs to shower and gather their things.

As Tara was placing the last of her belongings in her bag, she suddenly remembered something and looked across the room to Willow. “I forgot. I have something for you.”

Willow was busy placing folded clothes into her suitcase but instantly dropped what she was doing at the prospect of presents. Her eyes lit up and she had to restrain herself from sprinted over to where Tara sat on the floor. She attempted a casual, “Really?”

“Yeah, just a second.” Tara opened one of the smaller pockets on her bag and reached in. She had to pull a few items out to get what she was looking for.

Willow watched as Tara pulled out a personal CD player followed by a small teal box. Instantly she recognized the Tiffany & Co. logo, and her eyes nearly bulged out of her head. Her eyes followed as Tara placed the box aside and went back to looking through the pocket.

“Here we go,” Tara said as she pulled out two thin CD cases and a piece of paper. She handed the items to Willow. “From Kim.”

“Oh.” Willow tried not to sound too disappointed as Tara placed the teal box back in the bag. She wasn’t sure why Tara had a Tiffany’s box, and she had really been hoping it was for her. Deciding to ask later, she looked at the things in her hands. Each case contained a labeled CD-R. One read ‘Brighton Orr: Hollow Chocolate EP’ and the other read ‘Sunny City Rockers.’ After looking at the piece of paper, which simply said, ‘We have two!’ Willow looked questioningly at Tara.

“She wants you to listen to these to see what you think,” Tara explained, seeing that Willow didn’t understand. “If you approve, she has some papers for you to sign when we get back.”

“So she found two bands to sign on?” the redhead asked, knowing Kim had been working hard on the record label idea.

“One band and one solo act,” Tara corrected. “Brighton is just one guy.”

As she read over the hand-written track lists, Willow said to no one in particular, “Good job, Kim.”

When everything was packed, Willow led Tara to the garage so they could load the car. Upon entering the garage, the redhead turned on the lights and escorted Tara to the third bay where her car was parked. “And this,” Willow said to the other woman, “would be my Lola.”

Tara followed Willow to the rear of the car, looking over it as she went. “Pretty. I like the color.”

“Thanks,” Willow replied as she opened the trunk. “It’s called electron blue.” She looked quickly over at Tara as she heard the blonde snigger. “What?”

“Nothing,” Tara tried to cover.

“No, tell me,” Willow pleaded. If there was a joke, she wanted to be let in on it. She hated being out of the loop.

Seeing Willow’s big, begging eyes, Tara relented. “Does it also come in proton purple?”

“No,” Willow said a little uncertainly. “Not that I know of.”

It was obvious Willow didn’t understand what Tara was getting at. “Sweetie, it was a joke,” the blonde tried to explain.

Willow looked confused. “Huh?”

“Electron blue? Proton purple?” Tara supplied. “I was making a joke.”

“Oh.” Willow began placing their bags in the trunk when things suddenly clicked. “Oh! The particles and the colors!”

Tara laughed at Willow’s realization.

The redhead slammed the trunk lid shut as she said excitedly, “And if you had neutrons, you could have….” She thought for a second and asked herself out loud, “What color starts with ‘N’?”

“Navy?” Tara supplied with a shrug. She started to step away from the car and back toward the door to inside the house while Willow followed.

“Navy! Yeah, neutron navy. It would be like this whole family of blueish tones, because you know purple has blue in it.”

Willow continued talking about potential colors that could go along with other particles like quarks and positrons while Tara opened the door to the house and asked, “What have I started?”

Shelia was trying to hold back her tears as Willow started to say her goodbyes. It wasn’t too often she saw her little girl, and she wished Willow could stay longer. She knew that wasn’t possible though since Willow had a life to get back to.

“Call when you stop tonight, no matter how late,” Ira said as he loosened his hug on his daughter.

“Will do,” Willow replied, stepping back from her father.

Tara had been standing back from the family giving them a moment together when she saw Mr. Rosenberg step toward her. Unlike the night before, she knew what was coming and had time to anticipate his giant hug and return the gesture.

“It was so nice meeting you, Tara,” Ira said, still holding onto the girl. As he pulled back, he told her, “You’re welcome back anytime.”

Tara smiled softly at Willow’s father and started to say ‘thanks,’ but the teary-eyed Mrs. Rosenberg quickly caught her in the older woman’s own hug as soon as Mr. Rosenberg let go.

“If you don’t have plans for Thanksgiving, we’d love to have you,” Shelia said, still holding onto Tara.

“Definitely,” Tara replied. Shelia finally released her, and sat down in the passenger’s seat of the car where Willow was holding the door open.

After closing the door behind Tara, Willow walked around to the driver’s side and opened her own door. She gave a small wave to her parents before climbing in and shutting the door. Once tucked inside, she buckled her seat belt and started the engine. “Ready?” she asked the woman beside her.

Tara nodded, and the car began to slowly back out of the garage. Mr. and Mrs. Rosenberg leaned against one another as they slowly waved goodbye toward the retreating vehicle. As Willow backed into the street, she rolled down her window and gave one last wave to her parents before putting the car into first gear and heading off down the street.

Sliding her hand onto Willow’s leg, Tara smiled at her girlfriend as their journey back home got underway.

Hello -

I'm so excited to see an update to this story. It's remained one of my all time favorites. I've picked up on some great music from you, so thanks for that.

The 80's references make me smile and miss my coloring books. :blush I'm also an Ohio native, so I smile at those references and laugh out loud at THE Ohio State University. :laugh

I've always wondered what would happen on their car trip home so I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story ends up.

Thanks for coming back to share.

I almost wet my pants when I seen an update here. I love this story, and to be honest, I thought it would always be one of those that I wish was finished, but never would be.

But, yay, it's back. :pinky :pinky :pinky

I read the update, but then realised, I really had to read from the beginning to do it real justice. I'm on page 13 of this thread, so I've a few chapters to go before I totally catch-up, and it's been fantastic to read it all over again - even if I did sit up to after 2am to do it.

I love what you have have done with the characters we know so well, and Kim and Adam are a brilliant addition to the usual cast. All your characters, established, and original creations, gel together so well to make a smooth and pleasurable read.

Welcome back, and thanks for making a lot of kittens very happy with the hope that this brilliant fic will finally get finished.

I have to say that it's odd to be writing this once more. I myself had to completely reread the piece just to remember what the hell I was doing in the first place, and I've been listening to the songs from the track list trying to get back in that mind space. I have written a few pages so far for the next update, so I'm not a complete failure. A little bit here and there, so hopefully it will be done in a few days time. Until then, here is some individualized feedback.

Egnalos: You’re welcome.
whatmakesyouhappy: Good to see such an enthusiastic response.
ophelia11: I’m glad you picked up on some good music. One of my personal goals in life is to introduce everyone in the world to awesome music. And, “Go Bucks!” or something equally rousing.
Paint the Sky: I found myself staring at those three dancing elephants for almost a minute solid before coming back to the real world. They’re very intoxicating. I’m glad to have made you so happy, and I appreciate your kind words.
WillowRulez: I shall try my best.
Marilda: Totally not freaking kidding you! It’s real!

So it's been a lazy Sunday, and I found myself writing more than expected. I just finished this and gleaned over it for errors. No promises on perfection however.

JustSkipIt: Good to see you back leaving feedback, and I'm glad you were happy to see an update after such an insane amount of time. Long time indeed.

Track 22: Glory of Love (From “Karate Kid 2”) by A New Found Glory
Part E

Over two thousand miles lay between the Rosenberg home and Sunnydale, leaving ample time for Tara and Willow to talk. For the first few hours, they kept the conversation fairly light and mostly to a minimum, reveling instead in the ability to simply be physically near one another while they listened to the collection of mix CDs from Kim.

At one point, after the two had been silent for some time, Willow asked, “Don’t you feel like we should be looking through tourist maps and trying to find all the great roadside wonders of America?”

“Like what? The largest ball of twine in the world?” Tara responded with a quizzical look.

“Yeah, or like some run down gas station with the world’s biggest belt buckle collection. That would be so cool.”

Tara laughed lightly at Willow’s silliness, and she gave her girlfriend’s knee a gentle squeeze and smiled. “Well, sweetie, if we come across any of those things along the way I promise we can stop and check it out.”

Willow smiled back and made a mental note to keep her eyes peeled for any such tourist spot as she continued to drive.

With almost four hundred miles of the trip under their belts, the two women pulled off to refuel both the car and their bodies. They found a deli a few minutes off the interstate and went inside to relax from the drive and eat a meal.

After receiving their food, the pair spotted a booth in one corner that wasn’t surrounded by any of the deli’s other patrons. Preferring a little seclusion, they made their way over where Willow took a seat on one side of the table and scooted in as far as she could on the bench seat. Tara moved to sit on the other side of the table, but before she could make it, Willow grabbed one of her hands and nodded toward the empty space next to herself. Tara smiled and squeezed in next to the redhead.

“I can’t steal bites of your food if you’re all the way on the other side of the table,” Willow joked, and then with a leer added, “Plus I wouldn’t be able to steal kisses any time I want.” With this she leaned over and placed a quick but smoldering kiss on Tara’s lips. Normally she wouldn’t be so bold in a public, unfamiliar place, but the high back of the booth they occupied shielded the young women from any potential onlookers.

As Willow pulled back from the kiss, Tara was able to stare directly into the other woman’s eyes. So much deep feeling passed between them during that look that Tara thought she might cry from the sheer wonderfulness of how Willow made her feel. “God, I love you,” she managed to whisper before tucking her head into the crook of Willow’s neck.

“I love you so much,” Willow responded then placed a small kiss atop Tara’s head.

The pair stayed that way, Tara leaning into Willow, for a few moments before Tara tilted her head slightly to face Willow. “You’re soup’s probably getting cold,” she said, motioning to the bowl of black bean soup in front of the redhead.

“Let it,” Willow replied. “I don’t need hot soup when I’ve got my hot lady against me.”

Tara chuckled and nuzzled further against Willow’s neck. “You always know how to make me laugh.”

“Just part of my special charm.” With the arm that wasn’t against Tara, Willow reached toward the table and broke off a small piece of the blonde’s sandwich. “You hungry?” she asked, offering the bite of food to Tara.

Tara merely nodded her head and opened her mouth to allow the bit of sandwich to be placed inside. After chewing and swallowing, and without lifting her head, she quietly asked, “You want to talk some?”

Equally quiet, Willow responded, “Only if you feel ready. I’m here to listen, or we can just sit and eat. Whatever you need.” She offered Tara another bite of food, which the blonde accepted.

After swallowing, Tara finally looked up at Willow. “I think maybe I should tell you about my family.”

“Okay.”

Tara took a small bite of her sandwich while she gathered her thoughts, and Willow had a spoonful of her soup as well.

“I mean, I know you’ve met my sisters, and you know a little about my parents and grandparents, so what else should I have to say?” Tara let out a mirthless laugh and continued picking at her food.

“You don’t have to say anything,” Willow tried to reassure.

“Nothing makes sense if I don’t start there though,” Tara said. She let out another laugh. “Wow, how clichéd is that, taking everything wrong with me back to my family?”

“Clichéd maybe,” Willow said, never breaking eye contact with her girlfriend, “but certainly not unusual. We spend so much of our lives and those young, developing years surrounded by our families, it’s only inevitable that they’re going to have some kind of an influence on us, and the likelihood that at least part of that influence is negative is through the roof.” She followed up this profound statement with a quirk of the eyebrow and slight shrug.

Tara took pause for a moment, actually letting Willow’s words sink in. They were logical. They made sense. Of course they didn’t much change Tara’s feelings about the situation, but they were helpful. “Oddly, that’s somewhat comforting,” she said.

Willow simply smiled and took another bite of her soup.

Tara pulled off a hunk of bread from her sandwich and dunked it into Willow’s soup. After a moment she continued talking. “I know this is a little hard to believe, but they way I grew up, I guess you could say I was just some snotty rich kid.”

“You? Seriously?” Willow asked with raise of the eyebrows. This description was nothing like the woman beside her.

“Completely serious,” Tara replied. “There wasn’t a single thing that I could have wanted or needed that I didn’t get, and a lot of times I took full advantage.” She paused to take a breath. “Look at my sister Elle. The way she lives and the way she acts is a perfect example of how I grew up.”

“But you’re nothing like her,” Willow retorted. “And neither is your other sister.”

“Nichole has always been the level headed one. I don’t think she ever asked for anything she didn’t absolutely need. That’s just how she is.” Tara smiled thinking about her oldest sister in admiration. She continued eating as she spoke. “I always wanted to be like her, but for a long time, it was me and Elle who were the most similar.”

Willow just sat in silence trying to wrap her mind around a Tara that was anything like the pampered woman she’d met in L.A.

“My dad’s a stockbroker, and my mom’s parents left her with this huge, never-ending trust fund,” Tara continued, trying to explain how her family could be so well off. “So everything was simple and comfortable, and I thought I was happy.” Hollowly she finished, “Then my mom died.”

By this time, Willow was done with her soup, and Tara had eaten all she wanted of her sandwich.

“Can we go?” Tara asked. “I don’t really want to talk about this here.”

Willow immediately scrambled to clear up the table. “Of course! Let’s get out of here.” She waited for Tara to scoot out of the booth before climbing out herself and quickly bussed the table. Willow knew she would give Tara anything she needed, and right now that meant getting back to the privacy of the car.

As they walked back to the car, Willow grabbed Tara’s hand and gave a reassuring squeeze. They both got in silently, and Willow started the engine. She drove back to the interstate, and a few miles ticked by without a word from either of them.

Finally, Willow broke the silence. “How did your mom die?” she asked quietly.

Staring out the window, Tara replied, “Car accident. She was coming home a day early from a book signing in Philadelphia, and about an hour from home some guy’s tire blew out. When he was trying to stop his car from swerving, he took three other cars off the road with him. One was my mom’s.” Quiet tears trickled down Tara’s face as she continued looking out the window.

Willow wasn’t sure anything she could say would be helpful and instead opted to offer a comforting hand on the blonde’s leg.

“She died on the way to the hospital.” Something broke inside Tara and she began to sob uncontrollably.

Knowing that she could do nothing behind the wheel of a moving vehicle, Willow took the first exit off the interstate, and pulled off into a vacant parking lot. She quickly shut the car off and unbuckled her seat belt as well as Tara’s so she could lean across and wrap her girlfriend in a full hug.

“I didn’t even get to say goodbye!” Tara choked out. She continued sobbing and let Willow just hold for a few minutes before she was able to calm down enough to talk again. “I was the only one home when the police called. Both my sisters were at college and my dad was out for the night. I was supposed to be at a friend’s house but decided not to go. Then the call… and I didn’t know what to do, and my dad shows up surprised I’m home and there’s some woman I’ve never seen attached to his hip and I just lost it. I called him a fucking bastard and ran. And I kept running until I thought I was going to pass out.”

Willow just rubbed gentle circles on Tara’s back and let the other woman pour everything out.

“I ended up at my high school and just collapsed behind the building. I was there for a while, then a group of kids I knew from class showed up. They had a bottle of bourbon and asked if I wanted to hang out, so I decided why the hell not and started to drink myself stupid.”

Tara then described how she ended up skipping almost her entire last two months of high school because she was usually too hung over or too high to make it to class. She then retold the incident she’d mentioned to Willow a week previously where her sister had thrown her into the shower. “I ended up in the hospital with a concussion, and when my dad came to take me home he told me to pack my things and get the hell out of his house. That was four months after my mom died.”

Willow pulled back to look Tara in the eyes. “That must have been awful!”

Tara just shrugged and said, “I survived.”

“Why are you acting like it’s no big deal?” Willow couldn’t believe how casual Tara’s last comment was.

“It’s not like there was anything I could do about it!” she snapped. Then, noting the stricken look on Willow’s face she said, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell at you.”

“It’s okay,” Willow replied, understanding Tara was just upset. “Where did you go?”

“Nichole’s house,” Tara answered. “For a little while. She helped with the whole detox thing. Then Chicago. You basically know the rest from there.”

“I guess I sort of understand why you don’t really care for your dad.”

“There’s certainly no love lost between us,” Tara said as she began wiping her teary face with the back of her hand. “He ended up marrying that bitch he brought home. They had their first kid six months after my mom died.” She let out a humorless laugh.

“Do you want me to turn the car around and go kick his ass for you?” Willow asked, trying to ease a little bit of Tara’s tension.

Tara allowed a small smile and cupped the redhead’s cheek. “Baby, it wouldn’t be worth your time, but thanks for offering.”

The two sat in silence for a few minutes before Willow spoke up. “I know we’ve only driven about a fourth of the way, but do you just want to stop for the day? I think I saw some hotels on the other side of the overpass.”

As much as she thought they should keep driving, Tara nodded her head and let Willow drive towards a hotel.

Once they were checked into a room, Tara kicked off her shoes and flopped down on the bed. She was soon accompanied by Willow, and quickly folded herself into the redhead’s arms.

“Do you think less of me now?” she asked in a small voice.

“Absolutely not!” Willow responded with conviction. “If anything I think more of you knowing where you’ve been and what you’ve gone through and seeing who you are now.”

It was a strange feeling, actually accepting that Willow didn’t despise her for her past, and Tara snuggled deeper into their embrace. “I worry that I’ll become that person again,” she admitted.

“Why would you worry?”

“Because it was so easy to just feel nothing, and I don’t know that if I started to feel really bad again for some reason that I wouldn’t just go back to the nothingness.”

Willow tightened her embrace. “Well, you didn’t have me in your corner before, and if you ever start to feel really bad, I’ll be there for you.”

“But what if something happens to you?” This was something Tara didn’t want to think about. Ever.

“If anything ever happened to me, which I promise to do my best to never let happen, then you have Kim. And Adam. And you have every other person who knows you and can’t help but love you. You never have to go through anything alone.”

Willow’s words began to sink in, and a few happy tears filled Tara’s eyes. She looked up at her girlfriend and whispered, “I have to be the luckiest person alive to have you,” before capturing the redhead’s lips in her own.

Willow reciprocated the kiss and pulled back only briefly to say, “I’m the lucky one,” before diving back in.

The pair spent the next few minutes luxuriating in the feel of their lips and tongues dancing against each other. Suddenly, in a bold move, Tara rolled the couple over, effectively pinning Willow beneath her.

Enjoying this new position, Willow cupped Tara’s face with one hand and used the other to pull the blonde even closer against her body. She found an exposed stretch of skin where Tara’s shirt had ridden up slightly and began trailing her fingertips lightly over the flesh.

Willow’s light touches sent goosebumps over Tara’s body causing her to moan into their kiss. Tara pulled her body back slightly just enough to allow her hand to snake under Willow’s t-shirt where she began stroking her girlfriend’s side. “I love you so much,” she gasped between kisses.

“I love you too,” Willow breathed before trailing her kisses along Tara’s jaw line.

Tara felt like melting on the spot, and deftly lifted Willow’s body slightly in order to unhook the other woman’s bra in a swift move. Without removing Willow’s shirt she managed to pull the article of clothing out and tossed it the floor beside the bed.

Willow let out a squeak of enjoyment as she felt Tara’s warm hand begin kneading her breast. She let her own hands wander down to slide only a fraction under the back of the waistband of Tara’s jeans in order to pull their lower bodies into a slight rocking motion.

They continued kissing and rocking and caressing each other for several enjoyable minutes before their movements started to slow. Even in the heat of their passion, both knew, without saying anything, that they didn’t want their first time being together to occur in a random hotel room in the middle of nowhere. Eventually their movements ceased, and the two flushed women slid back into the simple embrace where they had begun.

“I could kiss you for days,” Willow mumbled with a contented sigh.

Tara only smiled in return.

After minutes of comfortable silence, Willow started to think back to past conversations and piecing things together with what she now knew about Tara. “When we were shopping with your sister in L.A. she said you could afford that jacket you tried on a hundred times over. What did she mean by that? Was she saying that if you and your dad made up he’d give you money?” she asked.

“Not exactly,” Tara replied nervously.

“Then what did she mean?” Willow asked, looking down at her girlfriend.

Tara wasn’t sure exactly how to respond and decided to say, “Despite my frugality, let’s just say I’m not exactly hurting for cash.”

“Huh?” Willow responded, completely confused.

“I told you my mom had a trust fund from her parents?”

Willow nodded.

“Well, her will left the remainder to me and my sisters,” Tara explained.

“Oh.”

“Two point four million.”

Willow’s eyes bugged out.

Tara finished lamely, “Each.”

Willow thought her eyes were going to completely fall out at that. “Oh,” she squeaked.

Awww...reminds me why I love this story so much.
I just love the silly banter between them but it's also important to talk about more serious matters so I am glad that Tara started talking about her family.
I suspected that Tara was well off but that well... oh my. But I understand why she didnt tell Willow before.
You made my morning by updating :smash

Woo-Hoo!! I can't believe we got another update so soon, but hey, so not complaining.

I was good to finally know what tipped Tara over the edge, and Willow's supportive and loving reaction was beautifully done.

That whole conversation was just so real what with Tara's flash of anger and Willow offering to be 'kick-ass' girl.

Oh, and Tara's a millionaire.

That's just got to mess with Willow's head - lol.

I just read the whole story. I really like the idea with the songs to "feel the flow" of where it's going. And i like you music taste. Some of the songs and bands don't say anything to me, but i plan to change that by reading again and listening to the music.
And i'm more than excited that you are writing on the story again!
So, thumbs up, and keep it coming, please. :party

So I'm being completely rash again by posting this almost immediately upon completion. I should take time out to do proper proof-reading, but who has the time or the patience? Once again, I gleaned for errors and corrected those I found. My apologies for any I missed.

Willowtree252: Thanks. That’s a lot of pink elephants.
arsyadriani: I was feeling ambitious. Thanks for the feedback.
WillowRulez: I’m glad you’re liking it still. I agree that there must be balance between silliness and seriousness. Mostly I prefer silliness, but seriousness it’s necessary at times.
Paint the Sky: I’ve always been a firm believer that when it comes to writing dialogue, you have to do it realistically. I play conversations in my head repeatedly before writing them down to decide if it sounds like something someone would actually say. Conversations have a flow and a cadence, and it’s sometimes really hard to get them to work in the written form. I often doubt my talents at this, but I’m happy to hear you felt I was successful in this instance. Thanks.
One of a Kind: I personally love when a collection of songs come together to tell a story. They hold more meaning for me that way, instead of just being a group of songs that don’t have anything to do with one another. Glad you’re digging the music.

Track 23: Clavicle by Alkaline Trio

After admitting to Willow just how not-poor she was, Tara explained how after everything had happened with her mom and then her dad, she learned that having things and objects in her life didn’t make her any happier than not having them. “So I modeled myself after Nichole, who I figured out actually modeled herself after our mom,” she said. “All our mom ever wanted in life was to write. Money didn’t matter. It was creating stories that made her happiest.”

“What makes you happiest?” Willow asked.

“Besides you?”

Willow playfully swatted her girlfriend. “Yes, besides me.”

“Music,” Tara said simply. “I want to share music with other people. That’s why I play in a band and why I want to open the record store.”

“Then as long as you’re doing what makes you happiest, I’m happy for you,” Willow said, and she meant it. Tara’s revelation at how well off she was didn’t change who she was. Rich or poor, Tara was Tara, and Willow loved her for it.

They spent the rest of the evening in the hotel snuggled up together watching cheesy movies on television, and when dawn came bright and early the next day they hit the road in order to catch up the time they had lost from the previous day’s drive.

The road ahead proved to be quite eventful, at least for Willow, that is. In Oklahoma they found a giant blue whale built in the middle of a swimming pond, and she practically had to force Tara to let her take a picture of the blonde in front of an old Volkswagen Beetle with monster-truck tires and a set of bullhorns on the front. By the time they made it to Texas and discovered the Cadillac Ranch, where a collection of old Cadillac cars were buried nose down in the ground, Tara wasn’t sure how many more roadside ‘wonders’ there could be. Seeing how giddy all the oddities made Willow, though, she ignored the strangeness of it all and had a good time with her girlfriend, regardless.

With all the stops along the way, it took four days in all to make it back to Sunnydale. When they finally pulled up outside Tara’s garage and shut the car off, both released a sigh of relief at being off the road once and for all. Tara, who had driven the last leg of the journey, opened her door and practically fell out from behind the steering wheel. Willow had a similar reaction on the passenger’s side.

“I love you, Lola, but I’m so glad to be out of you,” Willow told her car, leaning heavily against its side.

Both women eventually made it to the trunk, and Tara pulled her bag out. When Willow moved to close the lid, Tara stopped her.

“Bring your stuff in and stay?” she asked, adding a cute pout as a form of persuasion.

Willow reached in and pulled out her suitcase. “You know I can’t resist that look.” After closing the trunk lid she gave her girlfriend a soft kiss.

The pair entered Tara’s home and dropped their things near the door. It was late evening, but despite all their tiredness, neither was anywhere near ready to go to bed. Instead, Tara offered to make dinner while Willow showered away the disgusting feeling of being in a car all day.

After being away for so long, the fresh food pickings were slim, causing Tara to have to rummage within the freezer and cabinets. She ended up finding frozen carrots and a box of veggie chicken nuggets, not exactly the makings of the most nutritious dinner in her opinion, but it would suffice. She also came across a couple of potatoes and threw those into the mix as well. As she finished up cutting the potatoes to roast in the oven, Willow entered the kitchen freshly showered.

“What ‘cha cookin’, good lookin’?” she asked as she sauntered over to give Tara a kiss on the nose.

Tara gave Willow a peek at the food selection. “There weren’t a lot of choices, so this is what I came up with,” she apologized.

“No big,” Willow said. She wasn’t exactly picky and didn’t mind a simple dinner. She then began to shoo Tara out of the kitchen. “Go shower. I’ll keep an eye on this.”

Tara showed her thanks with a kiss and hurried off to shower herself.

When dinner was finally finished and Tara emerged from the shower, the couple decided to watch a movie while they ate. They curled up together on the couch after putting Some Like It Hot in the DVD player.

“Did you know,” Willow spoke up midway through the movie, “that Marilyn Monroe messed her lines up so many times in so many scenes that Billy Wilder started taping her lines to parts of the set so she could just read them?”

“Seriously?” Tara asked, surprised by this tidbit of knowledge.

“Seriously,” Willow replied. “There’s even a scene where’s she’s on the phone and you can totally tell she’s reading a cue card.”

“Where do you learn this stuff?” Willow was so full of random knowledge that Tara didn’t know where she picked it all up.

Willow just shrugged and popped a carrot into her mouth. “School? The Internet? I don’t know.”

They continued watching the movie, and by the end, sleepiness had claimed Willow, leaving her sprawled across Tara’s lap, drooling on her girlfriend’s cotton shorts. Tara merely sat and watched the redhead sleep. She continued watching until long after the DVD player’s screen saver function kicked on and the subsequent auto-shutoff activated. It absolutely amazed her how this one person could make her feel more complete than she ever had in her life. As she watched Willow sleep, she decided then and there that she would do everything within her power to always keep this woman happy and in her life. No more stupidity, she promised herself.

Eventually, lying in a fixed position on the couch brought enough discomfort to rouse Willow from sleep. She slowly blinked her eyes open and realized the movie was over. “Did I miss the end?” she asked in a child-like voice as she slowly rolled over to look up at Tara.

Tara brushed a strand of hair away from her girlfriend’s face. “Yeah, and this time Daphne and Osgood fell in love and got married,” she teased. “You totally missed it.”

“Liar.” Willow chuckled. “But wouldn’t that be cool? Two guys getting married in a 50’s movie?”

Tara smiled as she combed her hands through Willow’s red tresses. “Totally cool.”

For a few moments, Willow luxuriated in the feeling of Tara playing with her hair. “What ‘cha wanna do now?” she finally asked.

“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

“Try to take over the world?” Willow offered, referencing the cartoon Pinky and the Brain.

This caused Tara to laugh. “Are you sure you have enough energy for that?”

“I’ve just had a very nice nap and have more than enough energy.” To prove her point, Willow quickly hopped up onto her knees beside Tara. “See?” She then ducked her head in to capture Tara’s lips in a passionate kiss.

With her eyes still closed from the kiss, Tara sighed, “Mmm… I don’t know about world domination, but I could definitely go for some Willow domination.” Her eyes immediately flew open. “And that wasn’t just in my head was it?”

“Nope,” Willow assured. Despite Tara’s shocked look, Willow found the comment extremely sexy. She captured Tara’s lips again. “That was actually really hot,” she said between kisses.

“Really?” Tara asked uncertainly, ceasing their actions.

“Completely,” Willow said, pulling Tara back to her.

Their kisses began to grow more feverish, and it wasn’t long before a very heavy make-out session was under way. Rational thoughts became few and far between as hands and lips continued to stroke and press against one another.

Somewhere along the line something clicked inside Tara, and everything just felt good and right and perfect. She slowed their kissing and, with the most sincere of faces, she looked directly into Willow’s eyes and whispered, “I want to be with you.”

Uncertain of Tara’s meaning but taking note of the look on her face, Willow said gently, “But you are with me.”

“No, I mean…” Tara paused to figure out exactly what she wanted to say. It only took a moment for it to come to her. “I want to make love with you. Tonight. Right now.”

A warm smile spread over Willow’s face. “Really?” She herself had been having similar thoughts as they had been kissing, but her level of consciousness at the time hadn’t allowed her to stop and actually say something. Hearing Tara put her own feelings into words gave her a warm fluttering in her stomach.

“Really,” Tara confirmed. “Is that okay?” she asked, not wanting to push something onto her girlfriend.

Willow smiled wider. “More than okay,” she said. “Me too. I mean, I want to make love with you too.”

Tara smiled shyly and said, “Okay.”

The bold, feverish touching they had been engaged in just minutes previously was all but forgotten as they both slowly rose from the couch. Tara took Willow’s hand and started to slowly lead her upstairs.

Suddenly Tara paused. “Wait. I have something for you.” She let go of Willow’s hand and moved to her bag by the door.

Willow watched as Tara rummaged through the bag.

“I wanted to give you this when we got back,” the blonde explained as she stood with two small, teal boxes in her hands. She placed one on a nearby end table and held the other up for Willow to see.

Willow was giddy with excitement as she waited to see what was in the box. It was obviously jewelry, and the ‘Tiffany & Co.’ logo on the box let her know it was nice jewelry.

“I wasn’t sure if we were to the jewelry giving stage or not, but when I was out with Nichole I saw this and it made me think of you,” Tara continued. Slowly she pulled back the lid to reveal a white gold pendant and chain. The pendant was made up of two small hearts arcing towards one another in an attempt to form a larger, single heart. On each side of the gap where the two hearts didn’t quite meet was a small diamond.

Willow had to resist the urge to blurt out, ‘Holy crap.’ This was by far one of the nicest gifts anyone had ever given her, and the necklace design was absolutely beautiful. In a much more tactful response, she said, “I love it. Thank you.” She then turned and pulled her hair aside so Tara could clasp the chain around her neck.

As Tara worked to get the necklace into place, she further explained, “It just seemed so much like us, two hearts coming together.” She quickly finished with the clasp.

Willow dropped let her hair fall and turned back to face Tara. She looked down and placed her hand on the pendant. “It’s perfect,” she whispered and punctuated this with a soft kiss on Tara’s lips.

Tara then reached for the other box. “I got this for me,” she said and opened the box to reveal a ring with a similar design to Willow’s necklace. The only difference was that it lacked any gemstones. “They match,” she pointed out unnecessarily.

“I see,” Willow said as she reached out to pull the ring from its cushiony box. She then lifted Tara’s right hand and slid the ring onto her third finger. With the ring in place, she placed Tara’s hand over her own necklace. “A matching set. Just like us,” she said before lifting Tara’s hand toward her face where she placed her lips on the other woman’s knuckles.

They kissed again briefly, then Tara resumed their earlier journey by leading Willow towards the stairs once more At the top she guided them to the bedroom. With a little uncertainty about exactly what to do next, she pulled her girlfriend to the bed where they both stretched out, facing one another.

With a mild amount of shyness between them, the two women simply stared into each other’s eyes. Willow made the first move and nuzzled into Tara’s neck to place a trail of kisses there. They then began to trade gentle kisses on the lips that soon developed into something more sensual.

As they kissed, Tara began to delicately pull Willow’s shirt up her torso. Their mouths broke contact only long enough for the shirt to be pulled fully over Willow’s head. Moments later, Tara’s own shirt met the same fate. Neither had bothered to put on a bra following their showers, and they both quietly moaned as their bare skin made contact for the first time.

Willow pulled Tara on top of herself and began trailing her hands slowly up and down the other woman’s sides as Tara’s mouth began traveling to previously uncharted locations.

They continued their gentle explorations for what could have minutes or possibly hours since neither was really able to judge time, and nor did they care to. At some point, however, their remaining clothing was discarded, leaving both women completely open and vulnerable to each other. They made love slowly, reveling in the feel of their bodies joining for the first time.

They continued making love throughout most of the night, some moments more feverish and frantic than others but always filled with absolute love and devotion. It wasn’t until the very first dim light of dawn started to peak out that they finally began to feel tired and snuggled into one another.

“That was amazing,” Willow said quietly, still placing a few tender kisses onto Tara’s collarbone.

“Mmhmm,” was all Tara could manage.

Willow pulled herself in tighter to Tara’s body. “I love you.”

“I love you,” Tara replied.

They fell asleep wrapped around one another with feelings of love and joy and contentment filling their entire beings. Neither had known they could ever feel such a way, but now that they had felt it, they both knew at their very cores that they had found the one person to complete them.

You sure know how to make a reappearance, but definitely not complaining!

Sunday's update was very cute. I love the random "sites" you find when you travel cross country. Too much fun!

I really like how you handled the talk. Can definitely understand Tara's move across country and isolation from her dad. Willow responded as one would expect and they seem stronger than ever.

The last update was sweet and romantic and perfect.

Looking forward to more.

(And yes, "Go Bucks" is a good one. Football starts this weekend I think which means more bad drivers, no parking, and random fanaticism for the next several months)

Later!

ophelia11: I too love weird roadside stops. They make the drive totally worth it. I'm glad you liked 'the talk.' I think that if I had a dad who was an ass I'd want to get as far away as possible as well. Thankfully my dad's not an ass. Sorry to hear about football season starting up. It's not just OSU though with the bad drivers and no parking due to football games. I had to deal with some of that myself just trying to get home from work one night this week. A five minute drive turned into forty-five minutes. Major suckage.

arsyadriani: Yes, still ambitious. Things have been slow with life lately, hence the copious amounts of writing. Not sure how much there is left with this story though. It feels like it's wrapping up.

whatmakesyouhappy: Cali is being watched by a friend. We'll cover that in the next chapter. Since Tara left, she had to get someone to watch the cat because cat's are only self-sufficient for a few days. Any longer than that left alone is just neglectful.

I actually haven't started the next chapter, but it is outlined thoroughly. Maybe I can work on that over the weekend. We'll see.

I can't believe I missed an update, and here I was thinking I was coming to claim dibs - lol

God, I loved all those glimpses of Americana, and could totally understand Willow's excitement about the weird and wonderful roadside oddities.

I love their 'first times', and this one was very sweet and nicely done.

Somewhere along the line something clicked inside Tara, and everything just felt good and right and perfect. She slowed their kissing and, with the most sincere of faces, she looked directly into Willow’s eyes and whispered, “I want to be with you.”

I loved that part, it made my tummy all fizzy with anticipation.

And, I wasn't disappointed.

Some more replies.

Paint the Sky: Yeah, I snuck another update in there. Sorry. But I did post about it in the update thread, so I'm not sure how you missed it. Anyway, I'm glad you got the good kind of fizzy tummy rather than the bad kind. First times can be fun.

WillowRulez: I think we waited about five years. Of course I'm just being sarcastic. I would agree it would be much, much too early for rings, but jewelry in general can be very nice. Especially from Tiffany's. Man I love that place. So many pretty sparklies.

And now a very brief update. Really just a snippet of an update, but I figured it's been about a week and I should post something. So this is the start to a chapter. It's fun an light. Hope you enjoy. And as a reminder, this story was set in 2004 at its beginning. Just keep in mind that we're not in present day and older technology may come up.

Track 24: Songs Remain by H2O

Once Tara was back in town, it took the better part of a month for her and Kim to transform Maureen’s Books into Down On Margo, which is what they had named their store in reference to the street on which it resided. The formerly plain walls were now rich with bold colors and covered in various posters and paintings. A large portion of one wall was even plastered in a hand-painted mural courtesy of Kim’s inner artist. Where once shelves of books resided, racks of CDs and vinyl filled the space. A small section of books still existed in the store, but a majority of the business was devoted to music.

The store was set to open the following day, and Tara stood behind the counter double-checking some last minute preparations. Kim had gone home a little earlier, leaving Tara by herself. She currently had music loudly pumping through the store’s sound system and was singing along as she clicked through some forms on the computer.

With the music blaring, Tara was completely oblivious to the outside world and didn’t hear the keys in the front door before it opened or see Willow walk into the shop.

Willow could hear the music even before she came through the door. As she locked the door behind herself and made her way into the store, she could distinctly hear Tara’s voice singing along with Johnny Rotten, and she smiled as she walked toward the counter.

“We’re so pretty, oh so pretty, we’re vacant!” Tara continued to sing. When a pair of hands placed themselves on the counter in front of her, she almost jumped out of her skin. “Jesus Christ!” she shouted before looking up into Willow’s laughing face. She quickly used a remote to turn the music down.

“Actually, I’m Willow,” the redhead said between chuckles.

Tara joined in the laughter. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“I see that,” Willow replied. She then peeked over the countertop. “You need a hand mopping up back there. You looked like you might have peed a little.”

“Ha ha. You’re so funny,” Tara said sarcastically. “Now kiss me so I can forget how mean you are.” She leaned over the counter expectantly.

Willow obliged and offered a small peck on the lips. “Forgotten?” she asked as she pulled back.

“Hmm…” Tara started with a thoughtful expression. “Better do it again just to make sure.”

Willow leaned in again but this time swept Tara’s mouth up into a much more passionate embrace. When she pulled back this time, she asked, “Better?”

The look on Tara’s face said it all. Her eyes were closed and a small smile graced her lips. A quiet sigh forced its way out of her chest.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Willow responded. She then walked around the counter to give the other woman a hug.

After several moments, Tara asked, “What are you doing here so early? People aren’t supposed to show up for another three hours.”

In honor of the opening, Tara and Kim invited their friends to a small party at the store, which was slated for later that night.

“I just wanted to come by and give my girl a break.” She then stepped back to the other side of the counter. “Plus, I brought you a present.” She rejoined Tara toting a rather large shopping bag with wrapped boxes inside.

Tara eyed the bag grinned like a little kid. “I like presents.”

Willow reached into the bag and pulled out one of the boxes. “I know you do,” she said as she handed it to the blonde.

Perfectly mimicking a child on Christmas morning, Tara hefted the box to her ear and gently shook it. Whatever was inside had a little weight to it and didn’t shift around much to give itself away. She looked up curiously at Willow and began to peel the paper back.

Once the wrapping was pushed back, the gift was revealed to be a PlayStation 2 game console.

“It’s for the TV in the back room,” Willow explained with a smile. “In case you’re having a slow day or want to hang out after closing.”

Holding the box in one hand, Tara gave Willow a one-armed hug. “Thank you. This is really great.”

When she pulled back, Willow reached into the bag to pull out a second box. This one was long and flat. She handed it to Tara.

Instead of giving this package a shake, Tara immediately began unwrapping. Inside was a black box with an orange ball of flame and white lettering proclaiming ‘Guitar Hero.’

“Sweet!” she practically squealed. This brought on a second, bigger hug for the redhead. The game had only recently been released, and she’d been eyeing it ever since Kim had made the purchase herself and gave stellar reviews.

“I’m glad you like it,” Willow managed as she was being crushed against Tara’s body. “Open it up,” she added.

Tara quickly slid the box open and looked at the black and white guitar controller inside. There was a skull and crossbones sticker on part of the body, but she wasn’t quite sure why she was supposed to open the box. She looked up at Willow expectantly.

Willow only laughed. “Pull it out, silly.”

Tara did just that and began examining the controller. She still didn’t get it.

Willow noticed the remaining confusion and pulled the guitar’s strap out of the box. “Here,” said, asking for the controller. When Tara complied, she attached the strap to the guitar and handed it back to the blonde.

With the controller back in her hands, Tara finally understood. “It’s left-handed,” she said as she looked it over. She then looked up at Willow. “They only make right-handed ones.”

“I know,” Willow replied. “But you were made left-handed. So I fixed it.”

“But how?” Tara asked.

Willow simply shrugged. “A screwdriver, a little soldering, and a hot glue gun. Nothing major.”

Tara could only shake her head at Willow’s modesty. It was an impressive job, and she really couldn’t tell looking at the controller that it hadn’t come straight from the factory this way, with the exception of the sticker of course, which she now realized covered where the whammy bar had originally been placed.

“Kim’s going to bring her controller over tonight so we can play multi-player,” Willow explained.

“Then lets go hook this thing up,” Tara said, practically dragging Willow to the backroom.
