Chapter 31
“Tell me,
Ta-ra, how long have you been working here?”
“Over three months,” Tara was already uneasy from the way Anya said her name. It was like she stretched the first half purposefully to mock her. No. Not ‘like’. It was mockery. The last time some one her age had talked to her in this manner was high school. And Tara really, really hated her high school experience.
“Oh, a recent addition to the workforce, Willow?” Anya said turning to Willow’s pre-set face of stone. If she had attempted to pretend a smile, most likely it would’ve found its way into a frown. So she stayed motionless, and quiet. The less she argued, the faster this interrogation would go. What was tearing her up the most inside though, was she was the cause of this attack.
“Yes, Willow hired me after I decided to switch careers.” Anya’s head swiveled back to the once quiet-looking blond. She hadn’t expected the person to talk to her so easily. Didn’t she stutter a few sentences back?
“Oh, what career did you have prior?” Anya asked inquisitively. She leaned onto the side of Tara’s desk to stare directly into the blonde’s blue eyes, causing Tara to squirm further; Tara didn’t know how to answer this question without sounding unqualified for this job. Her brow went into furrow motions as she tried to think up a good enough answer that at the same time wasn’t a complete lie. Willow’s protective voice pulled her out from her thoughts.
“She was working--” she wasn’t going to let this previously annoying interview turn into a full-blown attack on her lover. She’d kick the woman out of her company, literally, before any more slants were thrown Tara’s way. Or prying. Prying was unnecessary.
“Mrs. Rosenberg, I do believe I was addressing Mrs. MacClay here,” Anya stated with a tinge of indignation.
“I was originally in social services, helping people, serving the community,” Tara said a bit firmly to regain the attention back on her. If Willow wasn’t careful, this Anya Jenkins would be angry, and Tara could see she wasn’t the type you wanted to anger. Worse punishment would come as a result.
“Social services?”
“Yes.”
Tara prayed that this would be enough to satisfy the overbearing woman. Luckily, it seemed so, for Anya folded up her pad and brought out a new folder from her briefcase.
“Are you good friends with Mrs. Rosenberg?” Anya said shuffling through papers trying to pick out a form she had been searching for, while asking as off-had as possible.
“Yes.”
Anya kept fussing with the papers, but then slightly leaned in as if this were a ‘girl talk’ session. However, Tara seemed repulsed by the woman’s face so close and thus leant back to regain the lost space.
“How good?” Last time she bagged the best friend, how good was this one?
“You don’t have to answer that, Tara,” Willow said angrily. It wasn’t enough that she had to stick her nose into her work life, but now her personal as well?
“Mrs. Rosenberg, if you can not be respectful of my inspection, I may have to ask you to leave,” Anya said turning back to the fuming redhead.
“I have a right to watch you interrogating my staff,” Willow said through clenched teeth.
“Mrs. Rosenberg the only reason why you are here is due to my permission,” Anya said smiling, waiting for Willow’s next response.
“What are you talking about? This is my building, my employee, and my time that you’re wasting,” Willow said taking on a color similar to that of her hair. “She can’t separate us, that’s wasn’t part of the agreement. She can’t separate us.”
“With your approval of this interview, Mrs. Rosenberg, you automatically agreed to let me have full access to any employee I so wished to question, your presence is not needed. In fact, most interviews are done without the Head Directors, or Presidents present due to the intimidation you might cause,” Anya said smirking, she was fingering a piece of paper, just itching to draw it out for Willow to see. “INTIMIDATION?”
“There is no law against my presence being here; you never spoke of it when I gave you permission,” Willow said trying to control her anger.
“Actually there is,” Anya said pulling out that paper which looked like a contract filled with rules and regulations. One specific sentence fragment was highlighted, just for Willow, which read, ‘…may be removed if so desired by the Prime Inspector…’
“You see, I didn’t enlighten you of this particular rule before because I didn’t see the need to,” Anya said waiting for every anger twitch she could pull out of Willow to appear, “your recent impetuousness has caused me to believe this interview will not be under the best conditions possible.” Tara saw where this was heading, but stayed still, if she showed emotion for Willow, Anya would be clued into their mutual relationship. It was killing her not to explode as Willow was visibly doing right now.
“It is a shame that it comes to this, but I must ask you to leave now, for the good of the interview,” Anya said, almost disapprovingly. Willow didn’t say a word. Her jaw clenched, her eyes glared and her knuckles were turning white from the pressure on her fingers from her palms.
Anya turned her back again, not waiting for Willow’s departure.
“Now, Tara, in your own words, what do you think of your work conditions?” Tara said nothing, she just kept staring silently at Willow, who had not moved an inch. Anya saw the distraction and said in a firm voice, “You’re still here?”
“Willow, its okay, you can go, I’m okay,” Tara reassured the redhead.
Willow said nothing, gave Tara one last look and turned away to leave, when she heard the voice of Anya again call to her.
“Be sure to make that file on the companies outputs and inputs for the next visit, Mrs. Rosenberg. And maybe, you could try to be a bit more polite next time as well.”
Willow stopped walking for a moment and then proceeded to walk forward, not looking back.
“Now, where were we?”
Hee...I'm startin' to love writing this characterization of Anya...although i must admit, it doesn't sound like our Anya..more or less of a bitchy woman....but Anya's reputation and the way she can look fiercly got me to use her as this woman....but thanks for the kind words....i hope to get the sketchy up soon too...

Last night in sweet slumber I dreamed I did see my own precious jewel sat smiling by me.
And when I awakened I found it not so; my eyes like some fountain with tears overflowed.
