Don't Look Back- Actors After Escaping ME

Jixer's message:

Hello Kittens-

This thread is dedicated to those actors besides Aly and Amber who are moving on with their careers after their time on Buffy. I'd like to keep up especially with the ones who were active during the golden years of Buffy, the ones with W/T.

Any of their comments about working on Buffy would be welcome as well.

Thank you for your time,

I'm sure everyone's noticed this already, but since I haven't seen a post about it, I just thought I'd mention that Kristine Sutherland is currently doing commercials for Advil.

When we were at the movies last weekend we saw a trailer for Mysterious Skin. Michelle Trachtenberg appears to be one of the three leads. It looks like a very intense, dramatic film.

I'm glad to see MT isn't getting pigeonholed into frothy teen flicks.

Well she is not resting on her laurels that´s for sure. Very good, I like her, she speaks her mind and seems to have a very level head on her shoulders.

Oh and on actors not moving forward James Marsters is at Collectormania in Milton Keynes this weekend. ASH is there is as well but then for him it's not a long trip and he has a recurring gig on 'Little Britain'.

From TV Guide...

Buffy's James Marsters: Rock Star?
by Ben Katner

If your fantasies involve being serenaded by a vampire, you're in luck. James Marsters — beloved as toothsome Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel — has just released his first solo CD, Civilized Man. If only he could have produced the album without leaving a trail of carnage in his wake....

You see, before entering the studio on his own, the actor went on a highly successful tour of Europe with his band, Ghost of the Robot. "I believe it was our third time over there, and we'd gone from playing houses of hundreds of people to playing for thousands of people. Not tens of thousands," he clarifies quickly for TVGuide.com, "but you know, three, four, five."

Nonetheless, the lead vocalist saw the blood... er, the writing on the wall. "The chemistry of the band changed," he says. "I think we started taking ourselves too seriously, frankly, and it stopped being fun for me." What's more, he adds, "The songwriting coming from the other members of the band was way too high for my voice. So I broke up the band after a very successful tour!"

Marsters laughs at the irony, but he's dead serious. "We were just about to finish up our second album, which was sounding really good compared to our first, but I pulled the plug."

Afterward, the frontman who no longer had anyone behind him returned to Europe. "Just me and a guitar, man, which was terrifying!" he exclaims. "I'm not Woody Guthrie! I didn't believe that I could stand up in front of 500 to 1000 people with one instrument and bring enough different kinds of sounds to pretend that I was really entertaining people for a whole hour.

"But it went really well," he adds, relieved. "People responded that they liked that set better than the band's. I'm sure not everybody felt that way...."

Yeah, his ex-bandmates from Ghost of the Robot, for instance. "Probably not," he admits with a laugh. "But they're all good people, and we're on good terms. It's just, stuff for [the band], I was a little reluctant to let people hear, because a lot of it was beyond my range [vocally], and I didn't feel as if it was good enough to be called professional. But now [with my new material], I do. Some of it you'll probably like, some if it you won't.

"I guess at the end of the day," he concludes, "the best thing about the whole process is that I feel more confident about myself as a musician, which is probably what you're looking for when you do something like this in the first place."

Well, I won´t be running to the store to buy it, but I am curious to hear some of it. He sang painfully off key in that musical episode, so I wonder how this will sound.

Yeah. I was completely underwhlemed by JM's performance in themusical ep. ASH and Amber were much better IMHO.
James Marsters — beloved as toothsome Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel
Will James ever move beyong this point. At least Sarah has "Grudge" & "Scoobie Doo", Aly has "American Pie" & "Veronica Mars" and Amber has "Ghosts of Albion" and "Chance" so none of them is now known solely as the from Buffy and Angel.

DB plays a government agent and NB a cook in a high class restaurant.

Good luck to them really.

not sure if this should go here or in the writers thread but while I'm not a big fan or Tim Minear and his crew of writers from the firefly/buffy shows that are now doing The Inside - I heard that Amber will be doing work on tim's The Inside which starts airing June 8th - so will have to watch her eps

also - did anyone see will and grace last night? was that seth green who was guest starring?

Personally, I will give "The Inside" a miss even if the Amber ep airs. I'm sure Amber will be as good as ever but I simply don't have faith that Minnear et all can produce a show that I would want to watch. In any case, as I said in Witches and Vixens, it appears that Fox is burning off the series this summer and that the Amber ep may not air if it doesn't do well. A 13 ep order really means nothing at Fox. "Keen Eddie" filmed 13 eps as a midseason replacement, like Inside and they were burned off during the summer and the next spring. If "The Inside" has made Fox's fall schedule instead, it would have more of a chance. Frankly, I hope the show fails and that Amber gets a chance at a show that will give her much better exposure like Cold Case files or her own films. If the ME shites like Amber so much, why don't they make her a regular. It will be Buffy all over IMHO.

the major broadcast stations are moving (be it slowly) to a 'year round' programing model -

rather than continuing on with the present - all repeats all the time summer model - which has been steadily causing viewer shift to cable - they have been increasing the number of cheap to make reality shows in the summer - along with on the cusp scrpted shows - if they catch on they keep them as possiblies for the mid season and if they fail then they haven't cost them much and gave them something new to hype for the summer

Even with the "year round" model, a summer release versus a fall release is still a step down. Since "The Inside" got a new creative team and a new direction, it simply makes more sense to delay it to Fall when m eps have been produced rather than rush it out in Summer with only 2 eps done. This shows a lack of faith in the new concept from Fox IMHO. The summer release has really ony been successful with reality shows where folks can catch an ep without tuning in each week or sopas like "The OC". It's not a good time to release a more complex and quite frankly downer themed drama like "The Inside". I hate shows about serial killers (ME made or not) which is why I never watched stuff like Millenium or Profiler. Not my thang and IMHO prolly not the thang for summer either. For example, the WB's "Summerland" had a similar summer release as "The Inside" will have and was moderately successful enough to get an midseason airing after but has since been cancelled:
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/newswire.cgi?id=6904

It is still true today, that it is better to get your 13 ep order on in the fall with the possibility of a 22 ep pick up than just 13 eps in the summer with no chance of pick up for the fall and a marginal chance of midseason pickup or burn of of eps.

"The curse has lifted"?

- --
TV looks to make a killing this fall

By AARON BARNHART

The Kansas City Star

Is it me or are we reaching the point where more murders are committed on network TV than in the America TV is supposedly reflecting?

This week the six major networks placed their bets for the 2005-06 season. Led by CBS, which added two more crime shows to its top-rated lineup, they are wagering that you, the viewer, want more gruesome police dramas in the fall, leavened somewhat by comedies and reality shows that emphasize the better angels of our nature.

Here are some of the trends that emerged. Keep in mind, however, that somewhere between half and three-fourths of the 31 new shows set to debut in the fall won’t make it to a second season.

Safe to laugh again: TV comedy appears to be on the rise after reaching low tide last season. NBC, which did more to create the modern sitcom than any network, also did more to kill it off with a string of irritating “Friends” knockoffs. It’s down to just four comedies next season, but one of them is “My Name Is Earl,” starring Jason Lee as a likable lowlife who turns over a new leaf. I can’t wait to see that show.

Same goes for “How I Met Your Mother” (CBS) with Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. Despite its frumpy title, this may be the most appealing sitcom about young lives since — dare I say it? … “Friends.” If comedian Chris Rock throws himself into his narration of “Everybody Hates Chris,” a sitcom based on his childhood, he could deliver a hit to UPN.

Other comedies, like “Kitchen Confidential” with Bradley Cooper (Fox), “Twins” with Mark Linn Baker (WB) and midseason “Sons and Daughters” (ABC) also previewed well. And for the second year in a row, the loudest cheers for any program came when the cast of Fox’s “Arrested Development” made their appearance. Fox leads all networks with 12 comedy half-hours next season, including “A.D.,” which it has picked up for a third season despite low ratings.

Make a wish: “Three Wishes” (NBC), to be hosted by Amy Grant, is an obvious attempt to cash in on the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” craze. But a more telling sign that a kinder, gentler season beckons is NBC’s decision to pull “Fear Factor” off its schedule (for now) in favor of “The Biggest Loser,” the weight-loss reality show that was a midseason ratings hit.

Created just for “eww”: There’s no end, apparently, to the ever-rising gross-out factor on network dramas. In the new Friday-night thriller from CBS, “Threshold,” headlined by Carla Gugino, aliens invade the bodies of Earthlings through the intestinal wall. In Fox’s “The Gate,” a killer uses trained tarantulas on sleeping women. Thankfully, we don’t see a close-up of the creepy critters ... ha! I’m kidding. There are close-ups galore.

They’re back: Television loves using celebrities to kick-start new shows. “E-Ring” (NBC), a political thriller set inside the Pentagon, stars not only Benjamin Bratt, the handsome former star of “Law & Order,” but Dennis Hopper, too. And there’s high wattage behind the scenes in Jerry Bruckheimer, the action-movie producer who has built a second empire in TV. “E-Ring” will give him nine shows on three networks this fall, which is more than even the white-haired wizard Aaron Spelling had on at his peak.

On “Commander in Chief” (ABC), Geena Davis plays a U.S. president. Two “Chicago Hope” stars, Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson, reunite in “Criminal Minds” (CBS). Jennifer Love Hewitt is “The Ghost Whisperer” on CBS, where she sports a hideous wig and talks to dead people.

Don Johnson, who had hits in the 1980s (“Miami Vice”) and ’90s (“Nash Bridges”), plays a freewheeling lawyer on “Just Legal” (WB). And look, it’s the former Mrs. Don Johnson, Melanie Griffith, playing “Roseanne” alumna Sara Gilbert’s mom on “Twins” (WB).
Julie Bowen, the appealing female lead on “Ed,” joins the cast of “Boston Legal” (ABC), and Chi McBride, who was the principal of “Boston Public,” and appeared on “House” last season, plays a police lieutenant on “The Gate” (Fox).

The curse is lifted: Two years after cult favorite “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was canceled by UPN, three of its stars have resurfaced in new shows. Hannigan, aka Willow, is in a promising “How I Met Your Mother.” David Boreanaz, whose vampire character became so popular that it spawned the spinoff series “Angel,” is in the crime drama “Bones” on Fox. One of the cooks inside “Kitchen Confidential” is Nicholas Brendon, aka Xander. And let’s not forget that Freddie Prinze Jr., whose sitcom “Freddie” will be on ABC, married Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar).

Best new shows: Besides the comedies I mentioned above, “Commander in Chief” and “Fathom” (NBC), which looks like “Lost” at sea, both appear promising. Most new dramas are reminiscent of dramas currently on the air, not just “CSI” but “Lost” and “24” as well. It will take time for any of these one-hour shows to break out.

Hello Kittens-

There I was, perusing some glossy People-esque thing at the check-out aisle and I run across a picture and blurb about SMG and her hubby. The caption was talking about his movie and didn't mention SMG as Buffy at all. It did go on a bit about her new hair color (dark brunette).

Which makes me ask- With a 100 mil movie maybe SMG is distancing herself from BtVS while Jossie gets stuck with it all the time because he doesn't have anything else with name recognition. So as Buffy fades...
