Buffy stuff. Open to everyone now.

Keeping my promise

Postby WebWarlock » Wed Sep 25, 2013 9:28 am

Nearly 11 years I made a promise here never to watch another Joss Whedon television show.

I am happy to say I have kept and will be keeping that promise.
I honestly never expected him to get another TV show, but I underestimated how short of an attention span Americans really have.

Either way. Still not watching.

You were not here then.

It was something everyone here went through. We went through Hell together.
I made a promise then and I have kept to it.

If you know then no explanation would be needed.
If you don't know then no explanation would be adequate.

Yeah I know, I kind of figured that was it, but didn't want to assume.

Yeah.

I wasn't there then either, but it still hit me.

And i have never been able to explain it to a non-kitten.

They just don't understand how much someone fictional can matter so much.

I have watched a couple of shows since then, but i get where you're coming from.

Keep the faith Tim. :kiss1

The best way I've found to explain it is to point out that Joss always does the same thing to his characters, and so there's no point to being invested in them.

My sister was a big fan of Firefly, and she was so shocked and sad when they killed off Wash in the Serenity movie. But to me, killing off Wash was obvious because it's what Joss Whedon always does. The number one reason I never watched Firefly (and somewhere online there's probably still a copy of my review of the original pilot, in which I said this very thing) is because I knew that sooner or later Joss was going to get Kaylee together with the doctor character, and once that happened Kaylee would be only a few episodes away from turning into the zombie queen of the Reavers or something. It's what he does.
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...

I saw an interview once where JW complained about folk always complaining about how he killed their favourite characters and/or made them turn evil.

He said "I can do other stuff you know?"

Except it seems he can't.

Buffy, Dollhouse, Firefly/Serenity, hell even the avengers movie had him kill Phill Coulson, the closest-to-nice guy.
Michael Bay will make things blow up, JW will kill anyone nice or happy. And has said so.

He also still seems to have a thing for killing lesbians.

In the recent Agents of Shield that my flat watched (done by his son i'm told) there were two characters killed off pretty quickly. I didn't notice at the time, but my buddy Matt pointed out that they were canon lesbians/bi/liked girls.

I think the only thing i've seen him do where he didn't kill the nice one/lesbian was cabin in the woods.
And he did, he just killed everyone else too, so it wasn't noticeable.
Also much of the human race by extension.

???

I'm not as hardcore as Tim, but i find myself agreeing with him and BBOvenguy more and more.
JW is a brilliant writer/tv person. Good characters, great dialogue.
He really makes you feel for his characters.
And then he will hurt you by killing them.

It seems almost like a fetish for him.

So i don't watch his stuff either.
Because i don't like pain and suffering.
Or dead lesbians.

Agreed, It just seems to be his definition of reality.
