Hiding from yourself rarely works.People want to use the enchanted mirror to see what they want to see. So does that mean if someone gets the mirror they will see themselves using the mirror or are their wants a desire.
“Desire is a strong feeling, worthy or unworthy, that impels to the attainment or possession of something that is (in reality or imagination) within reach: a desire for success. Craving implies a deep and imperative wish for something, based on a sense of need and hunger: a craving for food, companionship. A longing is an intense wish, generally repeated or enduring, for something that is at the moment beyond reach but may be attainable at some future time: a longing to visit Europe. Yearning suggests persistent, uneasy, and sometimes wistful or tender longing: a yearning for one's native land.”
Various examples when looking at desire is a Woman wants a man, a man wants a wife, a little old lady ate a fly, don’t know why. It all felt very chain of events. Going from A to B to C.
In literature desire is often a romanticised lust. Every fibre of their body yearning for one another. The lust leads to love, the love leads to man, a wife, eating a spider to eat the fly. Again it’s all a chain.
So does this mean desire is only the thing you want most at that one time? Once the person has the mirror they no longer desire the mirror as they have it. Yet they would need to have the desire for the thing they wanted to see first before having the desire to use the mirror, making it A to B to A. Man to wife to man, eat a fly, eat a spider, eat another fly.
Like you’ve chosen a path in a choose your own adventure book but didn’t like it so headed back. You desired it but then you desired the before thing more. The spider wasn’t to the old lady’s taste.
Perhaps desire is a way to give immediate significance to a want and it’s all in the moment but does the enchanted mirror work by that impulsive moment want, as it shows the want in real time. Or does it hold on to whatever A was.
Which brings us to this week’s poll –
“What would Tara like to see in the enchanted mirror?”
Tara Maclay – She’s was actually taken by her family in ‘Family’ and was replaced by a robot for the rest of the series. If the comics can do it.
Betty Crocker – Learning the secret to perfect rounds.
Her Family (Maclays) – All the information of a quick pop round without having to pop round.
Miss KittyFantatisco – At least one of them has to care.
A Million Dollars – Planning to make Willow’s wish come true.
World’s Largest Pineapple – No doubt it’s big but is it bigger?
Her Insect Reflection – Who doesn’t want to know what the Carbic cycle thinks of them.
Fly On The Wall – Who watches the watcher?
Her Anchor – Clearly lost it as Willow’s gone flighty.
Buffy – Instead of talking about her, the mirror can become their bedroom TV. Keeping up with the Buffster.
Happy Ending – Not seen many of those in her life.
The Future – Finally a way to see it after failing the other methods. Or ignoring what they told her. Red flags mean something Tara.
Centaur Dawn – Half Dawnie, half horse. Its safety and fun in the sense Tara wants to protect but also Horsies!
Other – Again super obvious one for this audience.
Other - I just have a feeling that she wouldn't look. Which seems really off key because she has the whole palm reading, tarot and crystal ball things going but after 'Family' that goes away (Now thinking that's because paragon saint of humanity Cordelia can only be psychic in the Buffyverse, urgh.).
I'm going off this being a recreational thing not in an emergency dire need situation.
Part of me says she wouldn't and I don't know why.
