According to her brother she knew like 8 people in high school. He was being mean of course, but Tara was so shy that I believe him on that. In OMWF in the park Tara acts genuinely surprised that those guys would check her out, she still found it hard to believe that others besides Willow would take an interest in her. Why would she find that hard to believe if before Willow someone else had shared her bed. The conversation in Tough Love shows she knew she was gay before Willow did, but there was nothing in any of their conversations and in Tara's behavior to hint at a previous lover for Tara. Just knowing you are gay obviously does not mean you have had a lover, so I don't see Willow saying "you have been out longer" as pointing to a previous love. It was clear from NMR that Willow had talked to Tara about Oz, but never a peep about an old love for Tara.

I strongly disagree with that. I didn't have to be with a woman first to know I was straight. And there are plenty of gay people here who didn't have to be with someone of the same sex first to know that they were gay. We had a daily thread about first times once and there were plenty of lesbians who said that they were still virgins. So they obviously know exactly who they are without having to have sex first.

Actually, you answered your own question. It was with Willow that she overcame her painful shyness, not someone else. If she had overcome it with anyone else, she wouldn't have been that shy to begin with. Willow was the one to make Tara come out of her shell.

Okay, i voted no, but i wasn't really sure. In Tough Love, doesn't Willow say something along the lines of 'i've never been in love with a woman before, so how could you possibly take me seriously?'



I dont know, whenever i saw that moment i always got the inferior vibe from Willow. Like, it seemed to suggest that Tara had some prior experience. However, it didn't go as far as to suggest that Tara had actually had sex before, so, i guess it could go either way really. It depends on how you interpret the information. I voted no because although the Tara that i watched was painfully shy, i could still see her with some other country girl after her mother died, i mean, she does say in The Body that she reacted to her mothers death by doing some pretty weird things. Whose to say whether or not she met a girl?



Again, it all comes down to your own personal interpretation of the character. There is no solid evidence (atleast that i'm aware of) to tip the scales, so to speak.



Oh, oh, i just thought of another point, although Willow seems to be the more assertive of the two, it's Tara who controls the balance in the relationship, she seems to hold Willow together, she might just have good instincts but a part of me wonders whether or not she's done it all before?

I voted no. Supposedly, she's been out for a long time. Though she seems shy, being out takes a significant amount of courage. And the only way she could have "known" was, of course, being attracted to other girls. There's a good chance she may have had a lover before. Plus, given her family situation, if she didn't have a girlfriend, I doubt she'd be motivated to come out. So, I feel almost certain that she wasn't.

What Tara said to Buffy about what she did after her mother died, if I remember right, in the first draft of the shooting script for Intervention, Tara said that she had gone to the caves to be alone.

This was a really hard to answer poll. I think the answer might be yes. If you consider her relationship with her family it wouldn't suprise me if she felt repressed and unsure about herself until she reached collage. Even in the Wicca group she was quiet and unsteady. It's very possible she had feelings from afar for someone else but I don't think she ever acted on them (that is until she found so much in common with Willow, that is...)

Agreed with some other kittens, there was barely a hint of Tara being with anyone else; although I concede it's possible she may have had a previous encounter of some kind, I find it hard to believe that it was a) sexual or b) a relationship. We know a lot about almost every other character in the show's sex life except Tara...which tends to indicate that there wasn't much to know until she met Willow.

Of course the other possibility is that even if she isn't a virgin it would have been a bad experience on her part (which would explain the shyness even more perhaps).

We didn't see enough of their early relationship to tell I think (grumble, grumble...)

I don't feel certain by any stretch of the imagination, but gut reaction says she was a virgin til she met Will. It just seems to fit. I always seem to find fics that state otherwise a tad unrealistic and I always end up thinking: "What is all this based upon?"

Another important point is that I always imagined Tara as the type who would wait for 'the one' and that the act of actually having sex would consitute a very important event to her - certainly not something she would throw away without long consideration. Which means that if she wasn't a virgin, she'd probably have to have had a previous relationship, which we hear no mention of whatsoever and I find unlikely (unless it went bad, which may be why we never heard anything of it).

SO there's my two possible scenarios:
1. She's a virgin when she meets Will
2. She's not but it was a mistake/bad experience on her part.

I find number 1 about 95% more likely than 2.
