Fic Challenges: How often?

Well, I wanted to give the whole "a challenge every month" thing a go at first, because it provides a constant foothold for people to start writing something. But I've also gotten feedback that this is too often.

So, what do you think? How often should we have challenges?

I'd also appreciate feedback on how long they should run, both in terms of absolute time (two weeks, a month, etc) and relative to the interval between challenges (Half the time between challenges, the whole time, etc.)

I voted 3 monthly so that they're effectively seasonal. That means that you don't get overlap with the (almost traditional) holiday challenge and the December one etc. Also lets you gave people longer.

I subscribe to an SF/F site which is heavily biased (in a good way) toward writers. They run a monthly short-short story thread (75 words, not including the title), and a quarterly longer one (300 words, again not including the title). There's a poll put up after the closing deadline, and everyone can vote for their favourite. The winner gets the kudos, and the right to choose the subject and style of the next challenge. Perhaps something on these lines would work - it's a real challenge fitting an entire story into 75 words!...
