Tara Character Study - Discussion

Postby Rally » Mon Apr 08, 2002 4:16 pm

I am going off on enough tangents in the Willow thread so wanted to direct some study of Tara to a different area. This does not really reveal anything about Tara that makes us understand what is going to happen. Rather it asks the questions and searches for the answer to the Why.

I am going to give warning in advance that some of my comments will probably sound very cruel and cold. I love the character of Tara with a passion, but in my bitterness I have attempted to distance myself from the events by treating them with words that are as callous and cold as the deed that takes her from us.

1) Why is Tara being punished?

We know that Willow is being punished in this year of Oh Grow Up for her addiction.

So why is Tara being punished?

The fan wide acknowledged only grown up, only mature character on the show takes a bullet in the back. This teaches us what? That even the most good natured folks have bad things happen to them? Or is it because Tara was selfish when she left Willow and selfish once more when she takes Willow back?

It can be argued that Tara left Willow because she felt she was in danger from Willow's addiction. So irony is kind of ironic that way, when she returns to Willow and then finds her life truly in danger.

Early on we surmised that Tara is being punished for rushing things with Willow. Tara who has always taken things slow and cautious, suddenly throws caution to the wind to make amends with Willow.

This seems to only be fuel for the story line, make up quick and die.

But really what is this telling us. That it's not ok to rush things? That being a lesbian is bad? That supporting someone fighting an addiction is bad? Or that Tara's death is truly a senseless

and utterly devastating plot point in season of our discontent.

In the end, whatever happens, Tara alive or dead. I want an explanation of WHY we as the audience and Willow as a character needed to go through this. And I am not talking about their flippant response of turn the channel if you don't like what you see. Because I will continue watching until the end of this

season, searching for answers and explanations.

So far I have none, which brings us to:

2) Why is Tara perpetually cursed in episode 19 of the season?

4-19 New Moon Rising

5-19 Tough Love

6-19 Seeing Red

I guess if you look at this pattern, we should not be at all surprised that Tara suffers and dies horribly in 19, now should we? After all she has been attacked in every other episode 19 and to some extent, become lost to Willow in each episode 19.

Though NMR wrapped up that episode, it was really the end of Tara's story arc for that season.

In season 5 we did not have resolution until near the end of the Gift. This season we will likely not have a resolution until the final episode of the season as well.

If one wants to look for the glimmer of hope in this pattern, it is that in the end everything turned out ok. Tara has been built up all season just for this instance, to make her loss both crushing and devastating to everyone, not just Willow.

I think this is particularly most cruelly pointed out by the fact that Dawn rediscovers the body, in the home alone. This runs a little too chillingly along the lines of Buffy finding Joyce in the Body. It is just another cruel twist in this already mind boggling series of events.

3) How does Tara's death affect the rest of the Scooby Gang and how do they react?

I think it's safe to say we do not know how it is going to effect the rest of the SG outside of Willow, but certainly there has to be some reaction.

In NMR you had no real reaction for what was going on, because no one knew what Tara meant to Willow until that episode and beyond.

In TL you saw a lot of pity for Tara and sympathy for Willow. Again a glimmer of understanding from Buffy, but not much else. I am always struck with how cold Xander is in the hospital scene in TL.

XANDER: Man, words cannot express how much I hate this place.

This reads, to me, more about Xander feeling sorry for himself or being unable to express his feelings. Similar to his

punching the wall in The Body. Xander is completely incapable of expressing himself in a rational manner.

Which leads me to what kind of reaction is there going to be for Tara this year. With Buffy fighting for her life and Xander likely engrossed with that. What lesson are the others learning from this? If any, and if they have no particular reaction to Tara's death, it just continues to poor on the senselessness of the event.

We thought Dawn had learned her lesson about everyone leaving in OAFA, so how is she going to take the leaving of her surrogate mother? I think probably in much the fashion that a lot of the younger and unspoiled members of the Kitten are...not very well at all.

I suppose we should have seen this coming, well we did in fact, but we denied until faced with the inescapable proof.

But I guess my point is, since I really do not feel there are any good answers to these question...if ME thinks they can just use Tara as a pawn to trigger Willow's reactions. That is very very cheap way to use any of the characters, not just one that is so dear to us.

If ME just wanted to spur "Dark Willow", they could have gone other routes. They could have had Tara leave for England and kill off Oz offscreen for example.

But they chose this route, with all it's pain and suffering.

So what does this path teach the other scoobies?

--Her death. Perhaps Tara's death is to help her not be afraid of getting back together with Willow. B/c she left Willow when she was afraid she as a person would be gone. So she returns and dies, exactly what she was afraid of in the first place. Perhaps it is to show her that she can handle whatever comes her way and that she can't predict anything.

--Willow's rage. Tara is afraid of Willow's rage. Perhaps this will show her that Willow's rage could be stopped by the Scoobies.

--Willow's love for her. There was always this nagging thought in Tara's head about "will Willow ever go back to boys". Perhaps this will prove to her how much Willow loves her.

Of course, all these lessons only work if it is fixed by the end of the season.

Rally, freakin' great call on the thread. I was thinking of this before in the Willow thread, and wondering if it was worthwhile having a discussion about Tara. You've convinced me that it is. :)

It seems to me that by killing the character of Tara, ME are going for drama vs storyline; tragedy vs triumph. That in itself is confusing enough to me. I've heard repeatedly how much Joss loves Willow and Tara; how popular Amber is; how great he thinks she is...

I don't see evidence of this at all, given what's going to happen to her character. I don't see any strengthening of the bonds that tie an actor to a show, sentimental or otherwise. The wonderful love story that ME have given us; the development of Tara's character as an integral part of the group; the unmistakeable bond she has formed with the other Scoobies...all of that seems to have fallen by the wayside in the light of a somewhat desperate need for "drama".

Just a couple of points:

1) Killing The Innocents

Joss likes doing this. He likes to take the goodness away from the show by perverting the innocence of characters. Joyce; Jenny; even Angel to some extent, were all victims of the "innocide" that ME seems to create.

But you know what? None of those characters were Tara. None of them have given us the purity that she did. All Tara has done is to love. She's the grown up. She's the adult member of the Scooby Gang who loves without condition and has given of herself entirely to the Gang, and to Willow. If we're talking punishment/reward, then for being a gift of light, Tara dies. For loving Willow, Tara dies. For being the "first woman" Willow ever fell in love with, Tara dies.

I'm not drawing parallels with anything anyone has said or pointed to here, but you know, there's something in that whole "I blame Tara for turning Willow gay" kind of thing. Could it be that this is our reward, as a gay audience? It's okay to fall in love if you're a lesbian, but hey, you don't get to take it anywhere.

***

2) Killing The Innocence

Willow and Tara's relationship has always been based in a censored version of lesbianism. Sure, there's never really been the opportunity to have a steamy love scene, given the outright hard right attitude of the WB when it came to the girls. On UPN we've seen a further development of the physical side of that relationship, but you know, kissing and hugging in bed is about as much as we've had so far. I'm not ungrateful; I've been excited and thrilled to see those kinds of scenes on US network television. It's a step in the right direction for us as gay viewers.

Now, given that Willow and Tara are to have a reunion, we're going to see them in their first love scene together. Seeing them consummate the relationship (for the first time, for us) and reaffirm their status to one another. And that's great. That's perfect. I'm not denigrating that whatsoever. If anything, I'm inclined to say "It's about time." I've always thought of Willow and Tara as sexual beings; in fact, I agree with the theory that they discovered their sexual attraction for one another first, before the emotional connection.

But you know, I can't help feeling that there's a price to pay for this scene. That there's a price for me, as a gay viewer, to pay for watching Willow and Tara celebrate their relationship and each other in a physical fashion. And that price? Tara dies. She is seen as a sexual being. Then she dies.

The price for taking away the perfect innocence that we've seen between them? Death. Nothing less will satisfy the drama merchants at ME, or the Willow/Tara naysayers.

***

3) Killing The Heart of the Show

Tara has always been represented as a loving being. Her selfless act in Tough Love not only put her life at risk, but also integrated her into the show as someone who can and will realize that loyalty is paramount. Her later concerns for Buffy, especially in the latter part of Season 6 so far have only reaffirmed this loyalty that binds Tara to the "heart". She knows and understands the meaning of love, so much more than Buffy, or Xander. The love that Tara feels is a mature love, not rooted in the relative youth of the other Scoobies in the show. It's real, it's grown up, and it challenges Willow to aspire to a better relationship.

This show has always been about the teenagers. It's always been so very contained in the dialogue, the storylines and the interactions between the characters.

I suppose that Tara has to die, because she's just too grown up for the show. She's too grown up for the mistakes that the others make. She's too much of an adult to be compared to the other Scoobies. And killing her? That's the ultimate act of childishness.

What strikes me most about Tara's death apart from it being senseless has to be that it has already been done.

1. We have had the whole 'Death is your gift'

2. We have had a major character die last season and one leave this season already...we have seen how death affects the scoobies.

3. We have done something to Tara to provoke a response from Willow.

Last season's message seemed to be that it is harder to live in this world, something that this season just isn't following through on.

Here ends my rant, although I may seeth quietly in the background :)

Well we also had Tara getting the metaphorical shaft in New Moon Rising, but it didn't stop them doing it again in Tough Love, only bigger and better. Looks like they're going for the hatrick this year by killing her.

Nice. :rolleyes

Oh, uhm, bit late here... anyway, I'm with tommo analysis, for most.

But I want to point out that I think Joss and ME want to underline 'growing up' means dealing with such horrible things like pointless death and pain. If you can't react accordingly to 'rules*', then you can be lost.

Sad. Maybe right.

Too much painful for me.

Yes not just the hat trick but the full out mind f*ck.

First the mind f*ck of is Willow going to choose Oz over Tara?

Then the literal mind f*ck from Glory.

So ME must top that by completely disposing of her in the most

utterly disheartening and callous way they can think of. By a second rate punk with a gun.

Symbollically shot in the back, we had discussed in private where Tara might be shot, and frankly none of us predicted this. This metaphorically symoblizes how most of feel right now. Having no idea what hit us, just being blindsided from behind by ME.

It of course does nothing to further Tara as a character, as it is a mindless unheroic event.

And once more I will state that I believe no matter what happens in the end, ME has a lot of explaining to do about WHY we had to see this.

The thing is, there is no point for this but to KILL WILLOW. And really Tara is insignificant. And yeah they can kid themselves all they want about how it is a coincidence that they are gay or that they are both literally and figuratively killed after making love, but it all looks interconnected from here. Can't separate it, sorry.

The point is, not Jenny, not Doyle, not Joyce, none of them were the characters that Tara is. They were supplements, they never had stories of their own, episodes of their own. We've lived with Tara for almost every episode for 2 1/2 years. This is not what she deserves. What is the point for her character? What is the conclusion for her story?

That's my whole problem with Tara dying a senseless death is all the abuse the poor child has suffered her whole life. I swear Tara must be the poster child for suffering.

She suffers torment/abuse at least mentally from her family with the whole demon lie, she protects Dawn from Glory and is rewarded with mental cruelty by getting her brain-sucked, she disagrees with Willow over magic and has a forget spell put on her, she finds independence with renewed self-esteem by leaving Willow only for her to find her soulmate again and her reward is death.

What is the message in this that the only adult member who has grown-up should get punished over and over again, and finally suffers the ultimate punishment in death. If this is the message than I guess we should not try to follow the right path, grow-up, and other positive things because we know where the road ends up with misery and death.

You can tell how vital Tara is because they have even bothered to have her birthday celebrated as an episode, an honour that is normally only given to Buffy.

Xita, you hit it right on the button as to why Tara dying irks me so much. Tara has gotten screwed over so much in life and when she's finally gaining her self esteem and getting Willow back, she is murdered. I guess in the Whedonverse, nice guys (or gals, in this case) finish last.

Another thing that always got on my nerves was after Willow and Tara broke up no one asked how Tara was doing. This pissed me off to no end until finally in the episode "Older and Far Away" Buffy said four great words to Tara. "How are you doing?" It made me feel good that someone OTHER than Willow or Dawn showed some caring for Tara. I know that is in the past now and not as important as the most recent spoilers for Tara, but it annoyed me that no one showed any concern for her.

I can think about this and analyze it from 15 different directions and each time the conclusion remains the same.

There is NO reason Tara has to die

I am sorry but this is so goddamn stupid! How can the people who gave us Willow/Tara, told us how much Willow/Tara mean to them and go out of their way to highlight how essential Tara has become (or should become really) to throw it all away on a plot device.

Kill Tara = Make Willow into vengance Black Magic Willow (I will NOT call her evil Willow!).

That is just fucking stupid. Ecuse my language but it is. It is every stupid cliche. It is every stupid plot device. It is as clear as glass.

They have lost it. They don't have a fucking clue anymore. They don't know what the audience wants. Worse, they are convinced we want this!

Look. I can go on talking about how important Tara is. How pivotable she has become (is that point????), but I shouldn't have to. Nobody asks these questions of Anya or Spike. Tara should be beyond these.

Outside of Dawn, Tara is an innocent. Is that why they kill her? And they want US to get the message about growing up?

Man. I gotta back away from this, I am getting more and more pissed off every second.

If they kill Tara, but do not bring her back this is a waste of a good character and many development opportunities. There is a lot that can be done with Tara's character.

First, we still do not know what happened to Tara's mother. All we know is she died slowly, but from what? They missed a golden opportunity to explain this after Tara becomes afraid of Willow's powers. Why is she so afraid? Has she seen what black magick can do to people? How close was she to her mother?

Second, what went on in Tara's house before she left. We have an idea, but I want to know more. There has to be reasons why she never calls home or visits. How mean is her brother? Will she ever want to mend those fences? They are her family in one sense of the world.

Third, how long has she known she is gay? Did her mother know? I want answers.

Fourth, what is her connection to Willow? What makes them such a powerful couple and why are they so much more powerful together? I agree with most people when they say W/T are soulmates, but I want to know why is Tara the one person for Willow?

So, what is my point? Tara is the first character I have really wanted to get to know better. I always look for little clues into Tara's past life in her conversations with Willow and the other Scoobies. She has this unique way of looking at the world I find fascinating. Tara has truly stolen my heart, and think the writers are making a catastrophic mistake if they do not bring Tara back. There a lot of fascinating storylines they can do but are too lazy or too stubborn to explore. Tara should find some happiness after all she's been through. She arguably deserves happiness more than the other characters on the show. I know the show is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but there are other characters too.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.
Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

I agree with you, The Rose, there is a lot more they can do with Tara. And it is a terrible waste. And I'm afraid, as far as the writers are concerned, that's part of the point. Kill off a character we love, that the other characters love, that has so much potential, is very much an innocent, in as horrible and pointless a way as possible because hey, it'll provoke a very real emotional response, right? Damn straight it will. But that doesn't mean its a good thing for the writers to do.

We know that there's a lot more the writers can do with Tara. But then, there's a lot more they can do with Buffy, and Willow and any other cast member if they so choose.

The point here is; why does Tara have to die?

I'm enjoying the comments about her childhood and the losses she has experienced in her life; all important points. And don't forget, she lost Willow as well. Just as Willow lost her. That's what makes their reunion all the more bittersweet, in my opinion.

I agree with everything thats been said...I firmly believe that the writers dont know how to write a storyline based on two lesbian characters, sorry thats JMO..Joss did because he created them..Maybe he still has a hand in all of this i dont know..My opinion is that Tara will not be back with Willow next season, reason being the writers are saying here's the scene you wanted W/T making love, enjoy it, remember it, tape it cause you wont see it again...Hence Tara is shot soon after..No goodbyes, no final words, just shot in the back...Exit stage right...

Wiccagrrl,

I really, really, really, really hope that i am wrong, but the way they split W/T up, then have them start to get back together, then Tara dies..I still dont see how they will bring her back, unless its as someone said, as a spiritual guide next season..But that belongs on the speculation thread..I have already explained why i love the W/Ts relationship and why its gratuitous that they make Willow go off the deep end, afterall we already know what she will do when something happens to Tara...We have seen it before and its nothing new..

Tara is love personified..Im a huge movie/tv fan and i have seldom seen a character like hers..All beauty and light..When have you ever seen Tara get really pissed except in defense of Willow?? Shes the calm one, the empath, the one who knows how the other scoobies feel, their confidant...I like to think of Tara as wistful, "musingly sad"...There is so much beneath that exterior, beneath the calm, i see a person who has experienced great heartache, someone who had never really been loved till she met Willow..Someone who has probably felt she wasnt deserving of love..Sensitive, kind, tender, loving, caring, empathetic, compassionate, strong, shy, wistful..

I love this character Amber has created and it is she who created Tara..The writers wrote the words, Amber as Tara is the one who brings her to life...To see this wonderful character, "love personified" killed makes no sense whatsoever, no storyline that causes that to happen can be justified....Period...

Re: Tara Character Study - Spoilery Discussion

Postby relativegirl » Tue Apr 09, 2002 3:46 am

Do you really think they would just kill off Tara and end her storyline after all the hints and tidbits they've fed us about her over the last 2 1/2 years? (I'm not doubting her death, just doubting that it will be permanent). Compare her to other characters who have left the show and think about how many unresolved things have been hinted at regarding Tara for which there is no analog for other now-departed characters. Tara's mother is a great example. Joss & Co have been dropping hints since "Hush" about Tara's mom, her being a powerful witch and her death when Tara was 17. Can you remember anything ever being said about Oz' mom or anyone in his family? Or Jenny Calendar and her mom/family?

Why would Tara have played such a prominent role in "Restless" if she was just going to be tossed aside? I think everyone pretty much agrees that "Restless" was bursting with symbolism and foreshadowing of future seasons and Tara was all over it -- she appeared in every dream except Giles'. Sure, it makes sense that she would be prominently featured in Willow's dream, they're lovers! But did anyone really expect Tara to appear in Buffy's dream? And as a spiritual guide to boot? Not unlike her role this season as Buffy's confidant.

Finally, I just think it speaks volumes that they did an entire episode dedicated to Tara's past (Family) and, most importantly, it was written and directed by Joss himself. If she was a throw away character with a throw away story, I just don't see Joss wasting his time on that episode.

If Joss & Co. really do kill off Tara and that's the end of her, I would expect that it's because Amber Benson wanted to move on to do different things (and more power to her) and was not something they had planned for.

Having said all that, I am concerned that the writers plotted Tara's death to occur shortly after they have the most explicit love scene they've ever done between Tara and Willow. There's a potentially powerful negative statement. Can't imagine that's gonna mess with the minds of any impressionable gay teenage girls, can you?

The thing which really gets to me about this is that Tara's death is just so senseless. If she was sacrificing herself to save Willow or Dawn, I'd still be upset, but it wouldn't be so bad because at least there would be some kind of logical thinking behind the storyline. But this .. it's an insult to the character, frankly. It's an insult to the W/T relationship, and an insult to Amber. And it comes damn close to negating all the positive work that ME have done with the depiction of the W/T relationship since S4.

For the official record, there is no "tension" among the writers (except for the sexual kind I feel for Doug Petrie.) - David Fury

Yes i think they would..Simply because since Tara showed up they have not explored any of those things in a really in depth manner, why wait till next season?? They have had ample opportunity this season to do it, lord knows the other storylines theyve had havent been that great....Instead we get Tara dying...

Im getting a bad vibe as to why they want to show that W/T make love before she gets shot...When Willow comes down from her anger and vengance and has finally faced the fact that Tara is gone, the one thing she will have and remember is the fact that they got back together and had the opportunity to be with each other one more time...How many times have you seen that in movies/tv shows?? Its the "be sure to tell someone you love them and make up after a fight cause you never know whats gonna happen" cliche...

The way the storyline is going i just cant see them continuing the relationship as it is..While Tara may be back next season, I think it will be in a spiritual sense...Let me stress that no one wants to see the W/T relationship continue more than i do, it is the ONLY reason i watch the show...However, a sense of forboding doom has come over me and i cant shake it and it really pisses me off and it makes me incredibly sad...So until i know for SURE that im wrong, i will expect the worst, holding out a teeny, tiny glimmer of hope for the best but its fading fast..

On that note however, gonna take some liberties from Intervention:

XANDER: Marti's gone insane. (Anya nods)

WILLOW: What? What'd she do?

XANDER: Brace yourself. You're not gonna believe it.

TARA: Everyone, before we jump all over her, people do strange things when they become an Executive Producer. When I made my own movie, I-I did some pretty dumb stuff, like casting James Marsters.

ANYA: Buffy's boinking Spike, I am becoming a Demon again, Willow is going evil and Tara you're dead.

Xander nods. Willow and Tara look surprised.

WILLOW: (pause) Oh ... well, Ta-Tara's right. Power can be powerful, and we shouldn't judge-

TARA: What are you, kidding? She's nuts!

WILLOW: Well, it's not healthy, we're all agreeing there.

TARA: What can we do?

ANYA: Sometimes in the movies when they go all power hungry they slap 'em.

XANDER: I'm gonna go find her and talk to her. If she's losing it, we gotta help her before the fans get a hold of her.

TARA: You aren't really gonna slap her, are you?

XANDER: No, but if I have to see Buffy straddle Spike again, I will definitely knock myself unconscious.

Thanks for taking the time and the liberties Rally. The boards have been a real bummer of late and your post was the first good laugh I've had in days. Well done.
