Behind The Mask-Chapter Seven Up-Finished!

Title-Behind The Mask
Chapter 1/?
Disclaimer-I do not own Willow or Tara or anything to do with the Buffyverse universe, I’m just a fanfiction writer.
Rating-PG-13 for now but it will change.
Summary-After Willow rescues a strange girl from a vampire attack, she is curious to find out who is behind the mask.
Notes-This is a more *realistic* version of my Witness Protection fic, after someone pointed out to me the faults in my other one. Only Tara is in hiding this time. I would really like to thank ObsidianEsper for betaing my fic and pointing out the bits that needed to be changed. And also for coming up with the alternate name for Tara. Alia means “immigrant to a new home” and is both pretty and perfect for this situation. Writing in italic is thoughts, writing in both bold and italic is flashbacks or dreams.
Feedback-I love feedback. (sorry for not putting that in before, it was late at night and I was tired.)

Chapter One-Detour

Willow Rosenberg checked carefully that she had everything that she might need for the dangerous but necessary work of Slaying.

Let’s see…stake, check. Bottles of holy water check. Crucifix around my neck, check. Not that a small crucifix has much effect on vampires, but there is always a chance that it might help me. My small Book of Shadows, with the most useful spells, check. My mobile phone to call Buffy in an emergency, check. No need for swords or axes or spears or the like unless I know I’m fighting demons. Although the chance of being caught, searched and arrested by the cops for carrying weapons are low, going heavily armed is just asking for trouble. I can’t really deal with demons anyway. Demon trouble equals run to Buffy. It’s a good thing the demons are rarer and not as violent as the vampires are or we really would be in trouble.

She looked around her house, knowing that there was a chance every time she went out to help Buffy and Faith keep the vampire population down, she might not come back at all. Or worse still, she could come back undead and ready and willing to feast on her friends.

Girlfriend…no, I don’t have that yet. A girl with lovely blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes, who is cute and funny and loves me for who I am, and who I could teach the skills of magic to until she becomes as experienced a witch as I am. And someone who would not be scared to work with stake and spell to fight the evil within this town until we can finally find a way to close the Hellmouth once and for all.

She quietly set off towards one of the many cemeteries of Sunnydale, a town that everybody knew had far more cemeteries then it’s size should warrant, even given that Americans as a whole were far more likely to be buried after death then cremated. It was easiest and best to stake the newly sired vampires as they crawled disorientated from their graves, rather then having to take on an old vampire that might have had an unlife of centuries and be crafty, hard to even locate, and be hugely adept at fighting. For reasons that even Giles did not fully know, all vampires knew the martial arts to an extent as well as possessing their great strengths, and old ones that had gained the time to sharpen their skills were as good as those humans who had earned a black belt in karate.

If they weren’t such skilled fighters it would make my task so much easier.

When she was halfway to the cemetery she heard a scream from an alleyway. A female scream. Right, detour. Whoever it is I have to help them. In the shadows she saw a girl around her age that had just been slammed up against a wall by a vampire, his mouth open and his fangs exposed as he prepared to sink his fangs into her neck.

Ah, a vampire. I know how to deal with them. It would be harder to deal with it if it were a human thug. Most of my spells would either be too deadly to cast or take too long in a combat situation…careful Willow, this is no time for babbling. One wrong step here and I could end up on the menu. Batten down the hatches…

“You…you stop right there or I’ll call the police.” It’s a bluff of course, partly as we Scoobies work outside the law and partly as there would be no time for them to arrive in time but it should make him charge. Hostage situations get ugly…

The vampire turned and stared angrily at her for a few seconds before hurling the girl aside and leaping at her with his arms outstretched and his fangs agape. Willow shut her eyes, pulled out her wand and spoke the last word of a spell that took rather a long time to cast, but could be saved, much as a flintlock pistol of centuries ago took a long time to load but could then be carried around loaded until the trigger was pulled. There was a short flash of light that Willow could almost see through her screwed-shut eyes and then she opened them just in time to see the vampire crumble into dust. She grinned. Another one bites the dust. Then she went over to the girl and helped her to her feet.

“Are you all right?”

“He…he was going to kill me. I thought I would be safe here…”

“He’s gone now, you’re safe. You must be new to this town. It’s a pretty safe place by day but at night, the bad guys really do come out. I’ll escort you home if you want.”

“He was a monster, those fangs…”

“Are you sure you weren’t seeing things?”

This is the time I wish I had one of those Men In Black nuro-whatsits. Mind you, maybe it would be good to be able to have another friend who really knows what’s happening here.

“What’s your name?”

She looks all right now that I can see her better, not perfect but OK. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, a decent body and what a rack…Willow, get your mind out of the gutter!

The girl sighed sadly. “My name is… Alia. Alia Baylee. And I don’t want to go home with all those…monsters around. What if they break into my house?”

"Don't worry about that Alia. Vampires, because that is what those monsters are, can't get into the houses of living people without an invitation by the homeowners. So if someone you don't asks to be invited in after dark, be careful and if in doubt then turn them down. It's better to be safe than sorry."

“Please don’t go…don’t leave me here, there might be more of these things.”

Willow looked her up and down.

What I should really do is escort her home but it’s not every night that one rescues a damsel in distress. And she might make a good friend in the future. I'd like to take her back to my house and introduce her to the Scoobies, but I doubt she would want to come home with me, a total stranger.

“If you like I’ll escort you to your home.”

What I should really do is go on to the cemetery and risk my life once more fighting with the pointy-teeth undead, but I’m not a Slayer like Buffy or Faith, I just help the Slayers and it won’t make much of a difference if I take one night off.

Trying to push out from her mind images of a grumpy Buffy waggling her finger at her as if she were a naughty puppy who had piddled on the floor, she escorted Alia back to her home, keeping a careful lookout for any more wandering vampires.

On the way Alia started shuddering and crying. “They lied. They told me that I would be safe here. It…iiiii…it’ll be safe they s-said. They…they didn’t s…s…say that monsters were roaming the streets.”

What is wrong with that girl? OK, she was nearly fanged to death by something that is supposed to exist only in myths and legends and that would panic most people. But who are they? Undead of some kind that tricked her into coming here?

Alia wiped her eyes as they walked under a bright streetlight and they suddenly changed colour from brown to a brilliant blue. Willow jumped back for a moment before realizing that Alia had been wearing coloured contact lenses. As she was about to replace them, Willow blurted out “You have such beautiful eyes? Why change their colour?”

“Because I…I…I have to or….” Alia fell silent as if she felt she had said too much already. “I like having brown eyes.” she said sadly.

When they got to Alia’s house, Willow took her by the hands. “You don’t need to hide your beauty from me. You’re safe here, the vamps can’t get you and believe me, I have some very powerful friends who won’t take kindly to anybody who dares threaten you. But before I can help you properly I need to know everything. Who are you running from and why? You can’t be a citizen of Sunnydale; most of them stay indoors at this time of night. You can trust me not to betray you.”

“It’s a long story. It started when…” Suddenly she stopped, her blue eyes clouded with tears and she stared into space.

Willow stared at her and thought I wonder what she is thinking about? Whatever it is, it can’t be a very nice memory.

*****

“Emma! No! Stop! You’ll kill her!” Again and again she saw the knife being plunged into her girlfriend and twisted to open the wounds whilst she stood there helpless to do anything. Then the killer turned and grinned at her as her girlfriend lay dying in a pool of blood at his feet.

*****
“Alia, are you OK?”

“I..I..I would like to tell you everything but I can’t, I just can’t. Thank you for saving me from that, that thing. I’ll remember to be very careful after dark. G…goodbye.”

She shut the door and walked upstairs to her bedroom.

It's not much of a house. In fact it's just a small flat, nothing like they promised they would get for me. Nothing like the house I once shared with Emma before they…don’t think about it, Tara Maclay…Alia, your name is Alia now, Alia Baylee. . Using your old name could very well get you killed. Don’t think about what they did to you or you’ll get depressed and end up either spaced out on anti-depressants or lying around in a drunken stupor with empty vodka bottles all around you, trying to forget. This is the first day of the rest of your life. Tell it to yourself, go on.

“Alia Baylee, this is the first day of the rest of your life.”

She ate some cookies and settled down to sleep.

I wish I had invited that Willow girl in, she seemed so nice and she probably saved my life from whatever that monster was. But I don’t know her, I can’t trust her, at least not yet, and they warned me often enough, they said it loud and clear. The most important rule of the witness protection program is not to tell anyone that you are in the witness protection program, or the story will leak out and then you won’t be protected anymore. It was either this or go and stay with your not so well known friends until they got fed up with you and threw you out, followed by life in a shelter for the homeless. That or joining your girlfriend in death, and most likely being tortured slowly first.

*****
She was dancing with Emma in her arms under a starlit sky. A strange balding man with glasses came up to her. “Would you like some tasty cheese?” She shook her head and turned back to her girlfriend. Emma grinned at her, and then began to decompose. Her veins turned greenish blue, her skin turned white, then greenish gray, and then rotted away to bone. Her eyes popped, turned milky white, and shrivelled away. Her smile turned to that of a skull, and then she crumbled away into dust and from the dust came flame and she was writhing and choking and burning…

*****
She opened her eyes and blinked, as a chink of light was shining through the curtains onto them.

I hate those horrible nightmares. When will they ever end? I don’t want to get out of bed but I have to, to start yet another day of my life without my girlfriend who lies there in the cold hard ground back in Alabama. Time to put my brown contact lenses in and start my day.

Great beginning... I hope that Tara soon tells Willow her story so the scooby-gang could protect her...

*clap clap* very good! i didn't get to see the renewed version before you posted. very good. there were a few grammar things I had changed that you didn't. next time, if you have me beta again, I'll make sure to place grammar edits in tags as well so they'll be noticeable. nothing bad though, very well written and realistic:-) can't wait for more!

Chapter Two, I Am, You Know

That afternoon Alia walked back from class in a state of deep gloom.

I wanted to be a lawyer, that was what I was studying before I lost my name. But the FBI people who disguised me wouldn’t let me, they said that if I was cross-examining criminals in court day in and day out one of them might recognize me and tell my would be killers where to find me, either for the reward money or just out of revenge. So I chose history, at least it’ll be enjoyable. But what possible use is a history degree to anybody? I’ll end up cleaning and waxing floors just to earn my unemployment checks. I’ll never find a girl who will love me for myself.

She noticed Willow sitting in a McDonalds with a blond haired girl, chatting to her earnestly about something.

I should just walk on and leave her in peace, but she saved my life from that thing last night. And gave me some useful points on how to avoid falling victim to the monsters in the future. If she tells me to shut up and go away, so be it, and I won’t bother her again.

She opened the door and came in. “Hi Willow.”

Willow looked up and grinned. “Hi Alia. I was just telling Buffy about you when you walked in. Sit down. Now, before we talk further I’d like you to come back to my house where we can tell you everything you want to know about Sunnydale. Who knows, you might even decide to join us.”

I know I should turn them down, but I think I can trust them. If Willow didn’t like me she would have let that monster kill me back there. And there is no way that they know who I really am anyway, so I should be safe with them.

They walked along to a shop called “The Magic Shop” and Willow led them inside. “Before I tell you everything, I don’t want you running around telling everyone about it, they might think you were mad. Also it might cause problems for us, and we can do without a police raid, thank you very much. Can you keep secrets?”

Can I keep secrets? My whole life is a lie.

She nodded.

“Right, as you can tell, there are vampires wondering the streets of Sunnydale, like the one that came so close to killing you. They drink human blood and generally kill their victims in the process. They are evil. Not just slightly naughty, they have no conscience, no soul. They think nothing of torturing and killing people for fun. There are also demons but they are far rarer and not necessarily even nasty, although plenty of them are. My friend Buffy was called…chosen…out of all the girls in the world to become a Slayer, someone whose destiny it is to track down and kill these things, somebody with super strength.”

Buffy glared and snapped at Willow “Willow, you know what Giles said…”

Willow nodded. “I know, but I really like this girl, I mean, I really like her.” She winked at Buffy and grinned. “And I think she could be an asset to us. I’ll train her up and…”

“OK, but next time, you ask Giles if it’s OK first and let him discreetly check the person first, rather then just shooting your mouth off that your best friend has super powers. We’re not the Men In Black, you know.”

Next to her Buffy produced a sold metal baseball bat from her bag and bent it into a circle as if it were made of plasticine before bending it back. Alia’s mouth dropped open. Who is she, some kind of super heroine? I really want to stay on the right side of her. She listened open mouthed as Willow explained all about the undead, the magic, the role of the Slayer and the Hellmouth under Sunnydale. I bet the guys who run witness protection would not have sent me anywhere near here if they knew it was a war zone between the forces of Good and the restless undead. What I should do is high tail it out of town but I can’t, I don’t have the money. And besides, I like these people.

She had a sudden wish to blurt out everything to Buffy and Willow including her real name, the fact she was a protected witness and why she was in hiding. But again the FBI agent’s words ran through her mind.

The story will leak out…you won’t be protected anymore.

Her inner self argued back. But I’m friends with witches and super heroines who can bend metal bars and fight the undead. No, you can’t tell them, however much you want to. Not now anyway. You still can’t fully trust them. And they can’t act as your personal bodyguards; they can’t be around you twenty-four/seven. They have enough to do fighting the undead every night, without bringing down hired hitmen on their heads as well. They wouldn’t thank you for it and it would not be fair on them.

“So tell me, Alia, where did you come from?” It was Willow who spoke.

“Alabama. I…my house caught the tail end of Hurricane Katrina and I decided to relocate to a state that didn’t have house destroying, terrifying hurricanes every year.”

"So...now that you know the truth about this town, are ya gonna stick around, or run as fast as you can the other way?"

“I think I could handle sticking around...", Alia replied.

Over the next few weeks Willow began to teach Tara magic. First she taught her the hovering pencil trick, which took her a week to do as well as Willow. Then she taught her the light spell that could destroy all but the most powerful vampires. “When you cast it, don’t whatever you do keep your eyes open. That would be real bad.”

“How bad is real bad?”

“Real permeant blindness bad.”

“Oh.”

With each day that went by Tara found herself liking Willow more and more until her thoughts started to turn to love.

She reminds me of Emma, in fact she’s even better then Emma. Sorry Emma, I feel bad about that, but I know you once told me that if you died before me you wouldn’t expect me to remain single for the rest of my life. But what if she is a straight girl and I say the wrong thing and embarrass her? What if she gets angry with me? After years with Emma and then being single my gaydar is rusty.

I think I’ll drop my disguise and show myself as I really am, just to her, and tell her everything. No. I won’t tell her everything unless she falls in love with me. Only then can I trust her not to somehow betray me. Should I drop my disguise? She liked my blue eyes; maybe she likes blonde hair too. But how do I know that? If she doesn’t, it would be stupid to show what I really look like for nothing, and risk the chance of them tracking me down. I’ll compromise, the eyes, not the hair.

*****
“But why do I have to dye my hair and change my eye colour on the other side of the country? It’s bad enough that I’m not allowed to use my own name.”

“For the amount of money that has been placed on your head, it’s most likely that the whole of organized crime would be interested in seeing you dead, and it’s tentacles stretch coast to coast and have done so at least since the days of Prohibition. Unless you’re planning to do something like living in secret in a basement, this program is the only thing keeping you alive. I’ve known at least two cases where witnesses turned down the offer of protection and moved out of state instead. But although it took a while, those who they had betrayed by giving evidence tracked them down and murdered them. Alia Baylee must have no connection to Tara Maclay in looks. You have to become a whole new person or you might as well take your chances unprotected. They already nearly killed you once, don’t give them another chance.”

*****
One evening Willow asked Alia “I was wondering if you would like to come to the Bronze with us? It’s a nightclub that plays some great music and I think you might enjoy it. Don’t worry, the vamps either avoid it or go there to have fun too.”

I’m not a night clubber, but I would go anywhere with Willow.

For the first time except when going to bed Alia took out her contact lenses to allow her blue eyes to show, as she knew Willow would like that, and then started looking around for some good clothes to wear.

How can I impress Willow and make her want me? By joining her in her fight against the undead, that’s how.

There was a long queue outside the Bronze, but Buffy went down an alley to a side door, and gave three short taps. The door opened and she handed over some money and said, “I’m here with my friend Willow and my new friend Alia.” Once they were inside, Willow explained “Buffy once saved the life of one of the Bronze’s bouncers when two vamps tried to feed on him one night. Now they have a little deal. As long as she pays for herself and her friends, she gets into the Bronze through a side door.”

Alia turned to Willow. “W…would you like to dance with me?” If she says no, I’m straight, then I know then it’s a waste of time and I could never win her love. Willow nodded and smiled. “Yes, I’d be very happy to dance with you.”

As the singers on stage started to sing Vanessa Carlton’s song “A thousand miles” Alia placed her arms around Willow’s waist and began swaying to the music with her

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd

I’ve lost everything, my girlfriend, my house, my name, and now with Willow I have a chance of making a new life for myself and rebuilding my life. I would do anything to be her girlfriend, to wake up in the morning and for things to be like they were before Emma died.

And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder
If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you... tonight

I feel guilty just thinking this, but Willow is even better then Emma was. Emma called herself a witch, but she didn’t have any real spells, Willow is the real thing. Everything about her is so perfect. But Emma…I feel like I’m betraying you

She whispered softly into Willow’s ear, “Emma.”

Willow stared at her. “Look, if you’re cheating on your girlfriend I really want to know, because I am oh so not a cheaty sort of person.”

“N…n…no. I’m not cheating. She died.”

“Oh, poor you. I don’t know what else to say.”

Alia whispered into Willow’s ear, “She was murdered. I don’t want to live a lie anymore, and if we can go back to your house I want to tell you everything, the full story. Not here where we might be overheard.” She leaned in suddenly and planted a soft warm kiss on Willow’s lips. Here goes… Willow’s eyes widened, but she made no attempt to pull away from the kiss. So warm…soft…sweet…When she pulled away from Willow, Willow asked her “What was that for?”

Alia replied, “I am, you know.”

“What?”

“Yours.”

Yay for update-y goodness... I hope that Willow doesn't freak out too bad when she finds out the truth about "Alia"... I hope that Buffy doesn't do her trademark "bad timing" thing and arrive just as Tara and Willow would begin their smoochie fest...

Zampsa1975 , here is a new fic bit for you.

Alia could not help feeling worried every time she walked through Sunnydale at night, even with Willow, despite Willow reassuring her that vampire attacks were not as common as she might think. When they had reached Willow’s house and got inside, Alia turned to Willow. “I…I…I’ve been keeping a secret from you for so long, I want you to know the truth. My name. It’s not Alia Baylee, it’s Tara Maclay. I’m in the…in witness protection. The federal witness protection program, after I testified against the murderer who stabbed my girlfriend to death in front of me. He turned out to be a member of the Canton crime family.” She shivered at the thought.

Stabbing and stabbing, twisting the knife….If I do anything I’ll get killed. I keep telling myself that but it does not make it any better. Maybe I should have jumped on him and died with Emma.

“Why did he kill your girlfriend like that, right in front of you?”

“He had dated her once, and when she dumped him and started dating me instead, he couldn’t take it. He would ring us several times per day and night, cursing us out for being lesbians. At first we tried to deal with it without getting the law involved. We lived in Virginia in one of those small towns and we knew friends of his and tried to get them to mediate. It didn’t work, it just made him angrier. When he threatened to come around and, in his words, “show us what sex with a real man was like” we called the police and had him arrested, fined and given a restraining order. Which was why he ambushed us early in the morning and butchered Emma right in front of my eyes.”

“I fled into the house and called the police and they turned up just as he was kicking the door down and hauled him away, which was when an FBI man turned up and told me that Emma’s ex was linked with organized crime and that the best thing I could do was to go into hiding with a new identity. I refused. I wanted to stay close to Emma’s grave. And I thought the mafia were only found in places like New York and Los Angeles, not in Virginia. It turned out that every state had an organized crime family of some kind, and the Cantons ruled Virginia.”

“So what happened next?”

“The first I knew was when some hotshot lawyer got the killer out on bail. Then it turned out that he hadn’t been read his rights so the evidence of the cops who came and arrested him could not be used on the witness stand. Either they were totally stupid when they arrested him, or more likely they just did that on purpose. With my testimony however there was still enough evidence to get him put away for life. Which was when his men tried to kill me.”

*****
“Whilst my son may have been hasty in what he did,” said Frank Canton, the leader of the Canton family “he is still my son.” He chose one of the gunmen in front of him, a probationary member who was yet to be “made”. “Therefore, you are to make your bones by setting Tara’s house alight, with her in it. I want her cooked.”

The arsonist was careful as he emptied the petrol can into Tara’s house and threw in the lighted match.

Tara shifted around in her bed irritably. It’s hot in here. Did my air conditioning go on the blink again? Oh, wait, it’s October, almost snow season and defiantly not hot outside. And my smoke detector is going off. And what is that smell-something is burning, something a lot bigger then a piece of toast. She went to the door and touched the handle. And snatched it away again when it scorched her palm. A tongue of flame licked under the door. Fire. Somebody set my house on fire. It’s too high from here to jump; I’ll either burn alive in here or jump out of the window and die splattered on the pavement. Of course, the rope ladder, the one Emma insisted on having in here. Thank you, Emma, you’ve saved my life from beyond the grave.”

She threw open the window and slung the ladder out, pulled on it to test that it was firmly attached to the window and climbed down. Halfway down the flames finally cremated her bedroom door and burst into her room, but she was able to fall the last couple of feet without hurting herself when the rope ladder burnt and snapped at the top.

*****
Willow cuddled Tara and kissed her softly on the forehead. “It’s ok, you’re safe now, you’re secret is safe with me. I won’t even tell Buffy about it. It must have been horrible going into hiding, losing all contact with your family.”

“Oh, it was.”

*****
Tara looked at herself in the mirror and blinked. They had dyed her beautiful blonde hair brown and put brown contact lenses into her eyes. A silver chain with an A on it now hung around her neck and her clothes had been changed. She turned to the FBI agent who had been put in charge of giving her a whole new identity. I hate myself for doing this but otherwise they are going to kill me. Or I’ll start carrying a weapon and end up killing someone else with no links to the Cantons out of fear, and then end up rotting in a prison cell. Sorry Emma, I love you but not enough to join you in the Otherworld yet. I hope you can forgive me.

“Your new name is Alia Baylee. Remember that. As far as you are concerned Tara Maclay is dead. You can have no contact with your parents or brothers or any of your old friends, and stay out of Virginia.”

*****
Willow leaned forward and kissed Tara lightly on the lips. “I swear to you, that if they come for you they’ll have to get through me first.”

Life as a Scooby was fun. Once Tara learned enough magic, she would go out with Buffy or Willow or Xander on vampire slaying expeditions, careful never to go alone. There was plenty of danger in Sunnydale-Tara was nearly fanged twice and once got thrown into a wall by a demon. But it was different from what she would have faced back in Virginia from the gunmen of the Canton Family. First, there was no danger at home or in the daylight. Vampires could not walk in daylight, nor could they enter a house without an invitation, whilst back in Virginia the danger was constant ands no place was safe.

Second, she could kill the vampires she was after, whilst had she killed a Canton Family gunman she would have almost certainly have had the police chasing her as well and would have ended up facing serious criminal charges, enough to put her away for life or even send her to the gurney. Here it was different. Vampires and demons might be hugely violent but they never ever went to the police and tried to have her arrested. Not that the Cantons would either, as it went against their code, but human bodies did not turn to dust when killed.

She got to know more of the gang. There was Anya, the former Vengeance demon, and Spike, who terrified her the first time she met him until Buffy and Willow told him about the chip he had, that hurt him if he harmed anything living. Even then she didn’t get close to him, revolted by his stories of the violence that he used to mete out to humans. As time went by she let her hair be blond and her eyes blue but she never stopped using her false name to anyone except to Willow, in private.

*****
Buffy sliced out with her sword and followed it up with kicks and punches, but for every one of the walking corpses she killed, two more seemed to take it’s place. Beside her Willow and Alia did their bit, blasting the bodies down with potent magic, Xander swiped around with an axe, Spike smashed down body after body and Warren helped keep the undead at bay with frequent beams from the Freeze Ray. So dangerous was this latest Big Bad that the Scoobies and the Trio had joined forces against it. The bodies, unusually even by Hellmouth standards, were coming not from the ground but from the large glowing portal to another world that hung a foot above the ground by the church.

“If they get past us, then everyone they kill will rise as one of them,” said Buffy. “What on earth are you doing back there?”

“Making sure that such a portal can never open again, what do you think?” snapped Jonathon. “We don’t want it popping up again elsewhere, do we? Ah…done…” He pressed the button on the strange contraption and a violet beam shot from it, just over the heads of the Scoobies and into the portal.

Kind of a trip to see the Scoobies and the Trio side by side. :) I'm a bit worried about what that device of Jonathan's going to do, though!

Great update, keep it up.

Yay for update-y goodness... I hope that the Trio doesn't compromise Tara's new identity... If they do I hope they pay the price for it...

Disclaimer-I do not own Willow or Tara or anything to do with the Buffyverse universe, I’m just a fanfiction writer.
Rating-PG-13 for now but it will change.
Part 4/?
Summary-After Willow rescues a strange girl from a vampire attack, she is curious to find out who is behind the mask.
Notes-This is a more *realistic* version of my Witness Protection fic, after someone pointed out to me the faults in my other one. Only Tara is in hiding this time. A big big thank you to my beta ObsidianEsper who took the trouble to beta this. She suggested torture of the gunman in this part but I didn't think that such a thing would be very KB-friendly so I left it out.
Feedback, yes please, I love feedback.

thiswomanswork ,now you know. :)
Zampsa1975 , not the Trio, the media!

The portal exploded with a loud bang that set all the car alarms in Sunnydale for miles around, as well as smashing all the stained glass windows of the local church. The dead bodies, cut off from their own dimension, crumbled into dust, and the Trio and Scoobies ran for it as police sirens were heard in the distance, some things being too big for even the Sunnydale police force to overlook. “You idiot,” Buffy snapped, cuffing Jonathon on his ear. “You just smashed up a perfectly good building.”

“It was either that or risk being killed by otherworldly undead,” Jonathon grumpily pointed out.

They managed to escape before the police got there and the next day, when Willow and Tara were walking to class, a CNN TV crew had turned up to report on what looked like a case of another hate crime. For a short time they filmed Willow and Tara as they walked on towards their class.

Back in Virginia Frank Canton, the head of the Canton Family was watching the news as he had his breakfast, and choked on his bagel as he saw the witness that he had wanted revenge on for months walk through the TV camera’s line of sight. He summoned one of his most trusted gunmen and told him where to go and what to do.
“Take your time, find out where this girl lives, and then you are to go in shooting and kill her and any witnesses. I will reward you well for this.”

*****
One week later…

Buffy tucked a stake into a pocket inside her clothing and turned to her friends. “Faith, Spike, you come with me, Xander, you go with Willow and Alia. Warren, I don’t know why you’ve decided you want to patrol with us, but I’m pleased that you’ve joined us. What would you say if a policeman caught you with the Freeze Ray? I don’t want to have to bail you out of jail, I’m not a rich person despite being the Slayer.” Warren tapped a Ghostbuster armband he wore on his sleeve. “If they do find me I’ll tell them I’m on my way home from a fancy dress party.” There was a tap on the door and Warren unslung the Freeze Ray. Buffy opened the door and a hand came through holding a silenced pistol just as Warren pulled the trigger, ensheathing the gun in ice before the trigger could be pulled. Buffy grabbed the arm and wrenched hard, and there was an audible popping sound followed by a scream.

Buffy dragged the would-be gunman inside and slammed him up against the wall. “"Who the fuck are you? I've got a very short temper tonight. Tell me who you are and who sent you, or it's going to get ugly.".”

“I’m not talking,” the man grunted. “Even if you kill me now, my friends will avenge me. And I don’t think you’re the type to kill me anyway.”

Spike grinned. “Maybe not, but I am.” And he vamped out in front of the gunman, whose face turned white with fear.

“Ok, ok, I’ll talk, I’ll tell you everything, just keep that monster away from me.”
“I just dislocated it,” said Buffy, and popped it back into place, causing the gunman to scream again. “I…I was sent here by my boss…the boss of the Canton Family, to kill one of you. Alia was my target.”

“Why?”

“Her real name is not Alia Baylee, it’s Tara Maclay and she gave evidence against one of us that got him jailed for life for murder. Ever since then she’s been on the Canton hit list. She was in witness protection and we thought we’d never find her, and then she shows up on the TV and the boss saw her and ordered me to come to Sunnydale, find her, follow her discreetly to where she lived and kill her. As well as what she did, killing a person in witness protection would have been a first for organized crime.”

Buffy glared at Tara who seemed about to cry. “Why didn’t you tell us about your past?”

“I…I..I couldn’t tell you anything, I was ordered not to tell anyone about my new identity or I’d be tracked down and killed, and you go through enough each day without having to baby-sit me as well. N…n…now I’ll have to try and get my name changed again and I’m not sure I’ll be able to, they said it was a one-shot deal and if I messed it up I was on my own. I’ll have to change my name again just when I was getting used to it, and move away and Willow…I’ll never see you again…”

Willow leaned in and kissed her girlfriend’s forehead and wiped a tear from her eye. “Don’t worry honey, this is just another Big Bad that we can deal with.”

Buffy stared at them and snapped “No, it isn’t. Hello, human badness here, and Slayers don’t kill humans. One, it’s morally wrong, and two human bodies don’t crumble away to dust as soon as you kill them like vampires and many demons do. They stay behind as evidence for the police to find. My destiny is to fight the undead, not organized crime. So unless you can think up a way to deal with this that does not involve killing you both might need to move away. I risk my life every night, I don’t want multiple human killers threatening me by day as well.”

“I have an idea,” said Willow. “We pay the big Mafia boss a visit all masked up, he won’t be expecting us, and then we perform a one-way Linking spell between him and Tara, so if she gets injured in any way, so does he. Then he’ll have to call off the hit. Dangling him out of the window along with a few well-aimed threats about what we can do to him might work too.”

“But we don’t know where he is,” pointed out Buffy, rolling her eyes.

“We don’t, but Mr Made Man does, and if he doesn’t want to become the latest meal for our vampire friend here he’ll tell us whatever he wants to know and take us straight back to his boss.”

Zampsa1975 , here is a new story bit.

“I can’t do that, he’ll kill me…”

“He might. On the other hand, we certainly will,” snapped Buffy. “After we torture you first, starting with snapping your fingers off and applying the Freeze Ray that froze your gun to your privates.”

After extracting the information, the Scoobies armed themselves fully and Buffy stood in front of them. Willow and Tara had their wands; Faith and Buffy had illegally owned police batons, Warren the Freeze Ray, Jonathon a wand and Andrew a chair leg. Each wore a balaclava or a mask and had a sword at their side. Buffy strolled up and down in front of them

“Now, we are facing humans here, not vampires, not demons, so I want you to avoid killing anybody unless either it is your life or theirs, or one of them kills one of you. We wont have to deal with police afterwards because we'll all be masked and they have too much to hide. We have surprise, a Freeze Ray, magic and super strength on our side. They will have guns and knives and they’ll be as ready to kill as any demon we’ve faced. Willow, Tara, can you magic us there? Driving would take too long and we can’t smuggle these weapons on board a plane.”

“The answer is both yes and no, “ said Willow. “I can’t magic us inside, because if the portal is off a few inches we could end up as part of the wall. But I can create a portal that can get us within a few feet of the door.”

It took a while to create the portal and when it was made they stepped inside, Buffy leading the way. She tore off the door in front of them and they strolled in. A man came out of a room, reached for a gun and opened his mouth to shout a warning, but Buffy hit him in the jaw instead. Quietly they headed upstairs, with the Slayers bashing anyone who saw them before they could raise the alarm. Carefully they checked each room. One contained a large metal safe that Buffy picked up and took with her. Another contained half a dozen gunmen playing cards, too many to take on.
Quietly Buffy placed the safe against the door so that the gunmen would find themselves trapped inside.

Finally they barged into the personal study of the boss of the Canton Family where he sat with his consigliore. The consigliore reached for a machine-gun only to be frozen in his tracks from a blast from the Freeze Ray. The boss began shouting for help and drew a pistol only to have Buffy pull the gun aside. He got off a shot into the wall before Buffy twisted his wrist and the gun fell to the ground. Below them they heard shouts and cursing as the trapped gunmen tried to free themselves.

“All your men are either trapped or unconscious,” Buffy pointed out. “We didn’t kill anyone, and your friend here will live although he’ll need a hospital stay. Now, shut up and listen. We are not a rival Family, we are not cops and if you do what we tell you, you won’t be hurt. Otherwise we can put you in a world of pain.”

As she spoke Willow and Tara were drawing out a pentacle on the plush carpet as quickly as they could do so without making mistakes. Warren prepared to shoot anyone who showed up, wondering how many gunmen were in the house.

“What do you want with me?”

“You put out a hit on a very close friend of ours, one Tara Maclay and forced her into witness protection. She lost her family, her name, she lost everything, but you didn’t stop there. You found where she was and sent a gunman after her. Now you are going to swear an oath never to harm Tara again and we will magically bind it so that if she gets so much as a bug bite, so will you. If she gets harmed, you will. If she dies, you will die with her. You can surround yourself with fifty thugs, leave the country, even go into witness protection yourself , but the spell will still affect you. When we’ve cast it, we’ll go. Any more trouble from you and heads will roll, literally.”

Zampsa1975 , here is a new story bit.

Willow and Tara began to softly, almost musically, chant in Latin and a green glow appeared around their hands and shot into the gangster’s chest, knocking him back but otherwise leaving him unharmed. Then Willow produced a short dagger. “I hate to do this to you, Tara, but we have to check to see if the spell has worked.” Tara nodded sadly and Willow made a small cut on her girlfriend’s hand with the blade. The boss clapped his hand to his other one where a small cut had appeared in the same place as on Tara.

“You and her are now linked,” said Buffy, grinning. “That was a tiny cut that will heal very soon, just imagine what the impact of a bullet would do. Now, we are going to go and you are going to call off the hit and warn any gunmen that we don’t know about it that the hit is off. If anything nasty happens to her it will happen to you just as bad. If she dies or ends up in a wheelchair, so do you. As for the rest of us, you have no idea who we are. Plus you really don’t want us raiding your mansion again. As long as you leave us alone you can do what you want, but mess with us or Tara and you will end up in the ground. That is all.” And they turned and left, leaving the boss of the Canton Family to free his men, break his consigliore free from his icy shell, fix the broken front door and call off the hit on Tara Maclay as quickly as possible.

One week later…

Willow and Tara lay in bed together gazing into each other’s eyes. “They tried to keep me as Alia Baylee,” said Tara, smiling. “They didn’t believe that the danger was over and of course I couldn’t tell them why.”

Willow suddenly clicked padded handcuffs onto Tara’s wrists and handcuffed her to the bedposts. “If you’re not in the mood, just let me know.” She did the same to Tara’s legs, splaying them apart so that Tara could not rub her clit against anything helpful.

She leaned in and kissed Tara’s forehead, cheeks, her eyelids and the tip of her adorable nose. Ear nibbles followed and she kissed the corners of Tara’s mouth and then stroked Tara’s tongue with hers in a deep, passionate kiss. She ran her hands down Tara’s body, over her breasts and nipples. She gave Tara a necklace of warm, soft, kisses and then ran her tongue up and down between Tara’s breasts and around them, and she kissed and licked her nipples to attention and ran her tongue down Tara’s sides.

Tara began to breath heavily as Willow ran her tongue up and down her inner thighs.

Suddenly she stopped.

I have to ask... is it Willow that stopped doing what she was doing or was it Tara that stopped breathing... sentence before the last leads me to think it was Tara... or I could just be reading way too much into this...
Also, I really like this story, a very interesting take on W/T meeting :)

Tara - your shirt... it's beautiful on you, but it looks way better off you...
And everybody lived happily ever after the end

Part 7/7
Summary-After Willow rescues a strange girl from a vampire attack, she is curious to find out who is behind the mask.
Notes-This is a more *realistic* version of my Witness Protection fic, after someone pointed out to me the faults in my other one. Only Tara is in hiding this time. Sorry that this last chapter is so short.

Tara moaned and pulled on her bonds but was unable to scratch the sexual itch that was forming between her legs. “Willow…please…” Willow grinned and took a bottle of Tara’s vanilla lotion. She smoothed it onto Tara’s bound arms and legs, her nipples, and breasts, her stomach, and then squirted it into her bellybutton and let it sit whilst she lightly kissed Tara on her forehead and lips. Then she rubbed it in with great care. She kissed Tara’s clit and flicked her tongue back and forth over it, drawing circles and stars and spirals and crosses on it with her tongue.

She wrote, “I LOVE YOU” on Tara’s clit with her tongue and Tara orgasmed. Wiping her mouth, she untied Tara’s wrists and kissed them and untied Tara’s ankles and rubbed them and lay in Tara’s arms kissing her lips and forehead. “You are such a gorgeous girlfriend, and you need never fear the Cantons again. And I will love you to the end of my days. I’d ask you to marry me but I don’t know if gay marridge is legal in this country.”

“What about the gunman that we captured?”

“Buffy let him go with a few warnings. He won’t go to the police being a mafia member, and he can’t go anyway unless he wants to face an attempted murder charge. She gave the gun to Warren for emergency use if his life is seriously threatened.”

Tara relaxed and grinned. She could use her own name, was out of danger, and had a wonderful, beautiful and loving girlfriend. Things really got better then this.

The End.
