A Home In the Hallows

Pairing: Willow and Tara
Setting: Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Rating: PG - Same as the NMBC film -
Universe: AU, Mosty likely no other characters from BTVS universe...
Disclamer: NBC (C) Touchstone, Disney - Willow and Tara (C) Joss Whedon et al,.

Somewhere in a mystic land, a beloved holiday leader felt ill, and decided it was too risky to prepare himself for the holiday. In the workshop, thousands of toys were being prepared for Christmas, while Santa decided on what to do prevent Christmas from having to be canceled.

Santa made his decision, and he knew it was a right one. A few years ago, all the holidays of the world, discovered each other, thanks to a meaningful character by the name of Jack Skellington. Santa had, at first hardened his heart in sight of this creature. However, after having being rescued from the clutches of the menacing Oogie Boogie, last year and the year before. Santa considered Jack a worthy friend. Jack had a passion Santa had never seen, whether it was Halloween or Christmas, he loved the holidays he discovered, and was proud of their existence.

Santa needed Jack to once again, take his place. However, Jack need not worry about the toys; Santa’s elves would still provide the presents they made and a note to ordinary people that Jack was delivering in Santa’s absence by Santa’s request. Santa notified Jack of his decision, and lucky for Jack, he still had the outfit when he had unintentionally made Christmas scary. As soon as he heard, Jack raced to Santa’s aid and took the bag of toys and list with him. Two of the good children on the list were Willow and Tara.

Willow and Tara, however, young and innocent as they seemed, they were not treated well. While not starved, both Willow and Tara were badly neglected.
Both the parents who treasured them had, heaving the unhappy parents, with two children they frowned upon. Being toddlers though, all they could do was seeing the neglect. Usually, at night they were abandoned, and tonight, Christmas Eve, unfortunately, did not appear to be any different.

Unknown to Jack, they were the last children on his list, and lucky for them, he was dedicated to delivering the gifts. Jack had delivered all the other gifts and now, headed now to Tara’s chimney. Once inside, he noticed her clothes were torn, and instead of delivering the gifts, he gently lifted the child into his bony arms, and after gazing in disgust at the treatment of her, went up the chimney, with the small child in his arms. The Maclay family noticed she was gone, but they never seemed to care. Jack somehow knew about Willow, as he rescued her from her sadness.

It wasn’t long before the sleigh found its way to Halloween Town, and Jack unloaded the children, the gifts and himself and the sleigh disappeared. Jack now carried the youngsters, via a doom buggy-like carriage, to Doctor Finklestein’s lab. Not to see him, at least not yet. He wanted to see Sally. She always helped him and understood him, and in his eyes, was one of his best friends.

Jack wandered up the stars as the buggies followed him to Sally’s room. A dimly lit room seemed to go bright as Sally noticed Jack. She then paused, staring at the new guests.

“Who are they, Jack?” She stopped to look at Tara, who now had look of fear on her face.

“They were the last children on Sandy’s list, but when I went to deliver the gifts, I noticed the children were very unhappy. I would have left them at an orphanage, but I felt that was not right. I though maybe we could raise them, as Halloween Town citizens.” Jack now witnessed a bond between Tara and Sally start to grow as Sally gently lifted the scared child out of the buggy. Willow looked jealously, a small pout gracing her tiny lips.

The fear that Tara had, ceased the moment Sally looked at in her in her lap. She looked at Tara’s clothes, and gasped. Why were these two humans mistreated?

Sally gently removed the soiled clothing and wrapped Tara in a black cloth blanket before continuing to talk to Jack. “Doctor Finklestein does have potions that will transform the children into any creature they wish to be, however before I’d ask him about that, I’d explain this predicament to the Mayor, Jack. See what he thinks. I know he is just an elected official, but I think he would be proud of you. I will keep the children here – perhaps make new clothes for them.”

Since it was nighttime, Jack did not proceed to the Mayor’s house, but went home to rest. He had fulfilled Sandy’s wishes, and unintentionally found himself caring about two innocent children who by chance, were not from his beloved town, but the real world. Jack may have been the most frightening character in Halloween Town, but he rarely showed the scary side of his personality. He would have liked to sneak up upon those responsible, but he had the idea that he should allow the children to face their offenders, with the malevolent help of Lock, Shock, and Barrel, to assist them in scaring their cruel-hearted parents.

Sally had now decided it was time to introduce Doctor Finklestein to the youngsters. Dr. Finklestein was a crippled man, who looked like he had the bill of a duck, skinny arms, and no way to move around without his wheelchair. His head, apart from his weird solutions, was a little different from the rest of the town. His had the uncanny ability to open up, revealing his brown colored glop of a brain. His sharp pointy teeth often looked like they were rotten, yet they never fell out. He usually stayed up late, always working on some weird project he enjoyed, and usually fussing about Sally.

“Dr. Finklestein?”

Sally had caught Dr. Finklestein by surprise as she usually didn’t speak with him unless she had decided to run away from his lab, therefore knocking him out with Deadly Nightshade, a potion that she often mixed with his soups. Sally did not know it, but under the often-harsh persona of Dr. Finkelstein was sadness and pride. He created Sally for his own company, but he had hoped she would see what he wanted, instead she was lonely – growing more restless by the moment.

“You actually want to speak to me?” Dr. Finklestein said, amazed, as he slowly spun around to face her. “You cannot know what this means to me, my dear.” He looked directly at her, who was now holding the two youngsters gently in her arms.

“Jack brought these two children back with him because he discovered they were being neglected. He wants to transform them into Halloween citizens, so I told him you had potions, but I thought it’d be better to discuss the idea with the Mayor.” Dr. Finklestein lifted his hatch, scratched his brain in thought, and slowly grinned a toothy smile.

“Wonderful idea, Sally. Although I do agree with your idea about the Mayor, and I believe we should wait until the children are old enough to choose their forms. I do think, however that the gentle one would be quite ghoulishly beautiful as a vampire.”

Jack, had indeed visited the Mayor. A rounded man with a two-sided head, the mayor usually considered himself less superior to Jack, although he ran the town. His two-sided head was cone-shaped, revealing whether he was happy or depressed, his happy face being bright and colorful, the other being white and pasty.

The mayor usually didn’t object to Jack’s ideas, and since he heard of the abuse, he wholeheartedly agreed. Although the mayor did think, the children did need to age. “I wouldn’t leave them as children, Jack. Lock, Shock, and Barrel would terrorize them – and I do not mean innocently.”

Jack took the Mayor’s advice to mean that he and Sally, and perhaps Dr. Finklestein must protect the children from the Halloween citizens, as of right now. They needed to grow... This world was still strange to them, and more so for Willow, as even though Sally had become a comfort, Willow found more comfort in Tara, because she was human, and the heartbeat of both comforted the other.

Six years had passed since Jack had found the children, and even though they were human, once the citizens knew of them, they accepted them. Dr. Finklestein had revealed the potions to the girls and every stood behind them as they chose, cheering.

“Do we have to be ugly?” Willow and Tara asked.

“The Potions will not transform you gruesomely unless you ask, also, if you desire, it will show you the future and transform you into that future identity.” Dr. Finkelstein replied.

The bottles revealed that Willow and Tara would indeed be closer than they currently were. However, it did not reveal the path in which would be taken.

Tara looked over at Willow, her choice made. “You’ve been the closest friend I’ve had, Willow.” The orange bottle in Willow’s hand trembled, as Willow was about to agree. It may seem strange, but neither had friends before, so the bond grew way past the understanding level at their ages. The potions tasted like candy, but in a few minutes, the future Willow and Tara would rise from smoke, their painful memories erased, and their bond a little more sensual than it had been.

As Dr. Finkelstein had rather predicted, Tara had transformed into a vampire, however her face looked very human, and beautiful. She had retained her blue eyes, and never morphed, and the only sign that she had changed were her teeth and the seductive outfit that graced her form. Tara’s neck rested on a collar, her blond hair shining against the red lining.

“Willow and I still have heartbeats, Dr. Finklestein.” Tara said, confused, now looking at her 22-year-old transformation, “If we’re here, aren’t we dead?”

Dr. Finkelstein lifted his brain’s hatch and rubbed it gently, and then, looked at Tara, “I’m afraid not. You both chose creatures that need blood and oxygen to survive. Tara, as a vampire, you have the ability to change into a bat, although leaving your eyes unaffected by the transformation…. Willow, usually when you become a witch, your blood disappears, making you ugly, but beauty, without makeup, requires your humanity. Your choices to be beautiful have made you both a half-blood.”

Willow and Tara stood still, speechless. Even though time had been fast-forward, they felt this community was their family, considering they could not remember the events that had led them there. However, they were as unique as the rest, also considering they were beautiful compared to the others. All respected them, but Lock, Shock, and Barrel still despised them, but Willow and Tara, had something up their sleeves that would turn them around.

Since the three brats were late to the gathering, Tara quickly transformed herself into her bat form while Willow charmed a pumpkin to come to life. Ushering Willow to climb on to her back, Tara flew high enough that the three tricksters would not see the unusual bat watching them, with a light sense of glee building up in her mind.

As usual, Lock, Shock and Barrel came in intent on causing trouble. Unknown to the mischievous children, the charmed pumpkin was behind them. All three of them jumped as the pumpkin started to have the appearance of a cackling witch. Once they were longer startled, all three tried to look for the people behind it, their glaze more in admiration of a sort than malice. Whoever it was, they decided would take the place of Oogie Boogie. Their original idea with Oogie was that he understood them. However, when they discovered Oogie’s true nature, they could no longer pretend, so they played along to protect themselves against being victims.

Willow and Tara, now having seen the reaction of the children, decided it was time to lower themselves back in the crowd. Willow dismounted off the large bat, while Tara told everyone to back away a moment while she transformed back. Usually, either orange or black smoke usually surrounded the transformation of a vampire bat, but it would be different for Tara. As she folded her wings, smoke matching the color of her eyes surrounded her. When the smoke cleared, Tara slowly revealed her face, covered by her left arm.

All three of the children rushed to Willow and Tara, now taking their masks off to reveal their faces, which really had no distinction from the shapes of their masks. The crowd cheered, and the Mayor and Jack stepped forward. It seemed he had a proud question to ask, and his question seemed to relate to what they had just done.

“How were you able to change these children’s minds?” Jack asked, his face looking cheerfully from the trio to Willow and Tara.

“Well, I think it happened by accident, because we didn’t know they’d react so positively,” Tara said, “and I think I have a secret to tell: I think I’m just as mischievous as they are...”

She gestured to Barrel to come next to her. She reached down, picked up a black scorpion, and placed it on his head. “I think a little friend has been missing you.” She whispered gently.

“How did you know?” he asked.

Tara chucked softly. “I must have better hearing as a vampire, because I could hear it speaking to me.”

Jack applauded Tara’s actions, and pulled Willow and Tara aside. Just noticing the kindness and innocence of the newest members of the town, Jack had the idea that these two should help mortal children celebrate this holiday. Their appearances, to Jack looked like a costume and children would not be that scared, he thought, considering they wore them as well.

When Willow and Tara finally understood their mission, they could not deny that they were less scary. If any of the other citizens tried to celebrate with humans, they seemed to be too scary, which is why Jack usually created Halloween behind closed doors, away from the eyes of the mortal world.

Once everything was planned and finalized, Willow and Tara wandered off.

“I have been feeling romantic feelings about you, Willow,” Said Tara as she glanced at a blushing Willow, responding to her unashamed admittance. “Maybe that’s why when I transform, you have a place to sit. I feel connected with you, although I am not sure why. There is affection, love, and actually, I do not know my past, but I feel a binding connection with you. Maybe Jack or Dr. Finklestein could help us.”

Since Sally had busy at the lab, she had not seen the transformation, but heard of it. Both Willow and Tara found their way to the lab, pondering why their feelings for each other were powerful beyond their understanding. Sally had been cleaning up when they came in.

“Hi, Sally. Do you know where either Jack or Dr. Finklestein might be at the moment?” Tara said, her eyes and voice not hiding her confusion.

Sally’s comprehension was quick and gentle. She knew something must have been bothering them. She ushered them inside and closed the large, heavy door behind them. She lit a candle, making the place, which usually was dark and gloomy, much more cheerful than it had been.

“Maybe I can help you. You both seem confused about something.” Sally said.

Tara placed her arm around Willow, who, because of Tara’s touch, once again stated blushing. “I have recently started feeling romantic towards Willow and her towards me. Why is that, Sally?”

Sally closed her eyes, and thought a bit. Then she looked at them both, and gently wiped a tear from her eye. “I’m afraid, that the origins of your affection and admiration were due to you both facing a similar tragedy, and I might add,” She said, smiling, “It was you, Tara, who consoled an upset Willow…. Anyway, Jack said he found you both abandoned that Christmas Eve, and so, he took you both from your homes, and gave you happiness”.

With Sally’s memories finally revealed, it was clear why Jack finally wanted the pair to deal with children. They had been given happiness, now he thought they could give happiness to other children – with one small catch, children and animals would be the only ones to see them.

Tara transformed once again, into the bat form and Willow climbed on to her back, ready for the journey. They had decided to visit the less fortunate children at hospitals. Willow and Tara did have the ability to freeze time, to slow Halloween down to its nearest minimum.

It seemed Tara was rather fond of children and it seemed she kept her child-like sweetness about her all the time despite her inhuman form. To Tara, the black outfit and fangs were nothing but a costume
.
To children, Willow and Tara were probably the Halloween equivalent of the tooth fairy. Rather than deal with blood, guillotines, and dead bodies, Willow and Tara chose to deal with the innocent side of the holiday.

The children the pair had chosen to visit were having trouble sleeping, although Willow and Tara had mischievous ways of dealing with that problem. Willow cast a spell on the children so their mind could wander in a dream state, while they actually slept soundly through the night. Instead of transforming, Tara simply glided through the cloud as she and Willow guided the children to Halloween Town.

Jack would have been amazed to know that children were not as afraid of Halloween as he thought. Willow and Tara were the most innocent characters there, so whether this was real or a dreamscape to the children, Willow and Tara would make sure it was a happy dream. Even though it was a dream to the children, it was real to the citizens, and actually a happy surprise. Willow and Tara first guided the children to Jack’s house – to meet and discuss the night’s plans. Jack supposed the guests might want to trick or treat or carve a pumpkin, but he advised Tara that she should chaperone them due to the antics of Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Jack handed her a special watch that told Tara long each dream would be for each individual child.

Due to their guests’ small hands, rather than carve a pumpkin, Willow and Tara cast a spell that allowed the children to create a lantern just by touching the area they wanted to dispose of. For instance if one wanted a triangle for a eye, just creating the shape with your fingernail would magically cut, creating the effect you were looking for. Often, Tara would bring the pumpkins to life, but usually these pumpkins were jollier than the previous she had concocted to surprise Lock, Shock, and Barrel. They often would have different personalities, some of them even falling asleep, boring the children. To surprise the children, Tara would often tickle the children, while Willow just grinned in a child-like manner.

Before time was up, Tara handed out black bags with handles and gently touched each child to wake them up, the bags containing no candy but toys and a little note. Willow and Tara had given joy to others, and now felt better about their place in existence. It seemed that since the years that they had changed, the human relatives who had neglected them had passed on, now a distant memory for Willow and Tara.
