Masters of Horror (conclusion posted for real this time)

Postby Useful_Oxymoron » Sun Jan 07, 2007 1:24 pm

Hello fellow Kittens, and a happy new year to you all. May 2007 be filled with Willow and Tara. :)

Anyway, I present, for your approval, a new serial. I have another longer story planned, but I had an idea which I didn't want to pass up. This'll be a mini-series of three (perhaps four if part 2 runs long) parts. I got the idea while watching a Masters of Horror episode which I particularly liked, John Landis' Deer Woman. Anyway, on with the story. I hope you'll like it.

Title - Masters of Horror

Chapter 1 - Pre-production

Author name - Useful_Oxymoron

Email Address - Viernadevir@hotmail.com

Rating - PG-13. Considering this is about a horror-show, there is a sense of the macabre present.

Disclaimer - Well, I don't own Willow or Tara. And if I did own them, I'd find Joss Whedon, tie him up to chair and have Willow and Tara shoot at him with nerf-guns all day. Also, some people mentioned here do exist, as Masters of Horror is an existing serial. These are mentions only and no speaking parts or actual appearences in the story. All the people directly involved in the story during the production of Tara's fictional 14th episode are fictional, per the rules of the site.

Feedback- Is cool. It's always nice to know somebody liked the crap I write.

Summary- Contemporary setting. Tara is a well-known director of horror-films and who has recently become a bachelorette again. She has been been invited to direct and produce a fictional 14th episode of the first season of Masters of Horror. A certain red-head will make her appearance. The story will focus, for the most part, on the behind-the-scenes aspect of filming.

Notes- More information on Masters of Horror can be found here. Check out the DVD's or the show on cable if you're horror fan. They're well worth it.

Thanks go to Xita, who talked me out of doing something really stupid. And the story'll be better because of it. Thanks, Xita!

Masters of Horror : Pre-production

Tara awoke with a groan and grabbed her aching head. The place beside her in bed was cold and empty, though today that was more of a blessed relief than anything else. She sat up slowly and swiveled to the side of the bed, hissing when her feet touched the cold wooden floor. Tara sighed and reached for her robe... then found out she was still wearing her clothes and dropped it again.

She made her way from her bedroom down the stairs to her living room, passing the remains of the dinner for two and, most notably, the shattered wineglass and the wine stain on her wallpaper. And, of course, the empty wine-bottle itself. Yesterday evening, she thought it would be a shame to waste an expensive bottle of wine and merrily consumed it... Though it seemed like a good idea at the time, it was an action which she was sorely regretting right now.

Since having a foot filled with shards would be a bad way to start the rest of her life, she carefully avoided the bits of broken glass and checked the clock. 14:37... Not that late, actually

Tara sighed and reached for her phone. She pressed the speed-dial, and every tone of the phone dialing shattered yet another part of her aching brain.

"Hello?" sounded Xander Harris from the other side of the line.

"Angelica left me," Tara stated simply.

There was a slight silence on the other side of the line. "Uhm, congratulations?"

"Thanks."

"What happened?"

"Ultimatum. Either my movies or her. Guess which I picked. Oh, I tried buttering her up with dinner and wine, tried to reason with her..."

"She didn't go for it?"

"I'm looking at a wine stain on my wallpaper. Still, it's not all that bad."

"How so?"

"She only hit the wall... but she was aiming for my head," Tara sighed.

"Told ya," Xander sighed. "You should never date actresses."

"We'd been having problems for a long time. Yesterday was the climax," Tara sighed. For the past few years, Tara had made a name for herself as a director of horror films. Making films, especially horror films was something she truly enjoyed, and luckily the public agreed, allowing her some measure fame and enough money to make a decent living. Angelica was a young actress she had met while visiting the set of another director filming at the studio lot next to hers some two years ago. Tara and Angelica had hit it off and moved in together after two months of intensive dating.

"Same old, same old," Tara continued. "She still wanted me to quit making horror and move on to, as she put it, more lucrative genres."

"Funny," Xander said. "She didn't object to helping herself to the money you made from those 'less lucrative genres'."

"Yesterday, I finally stopped dodging and told her I wouldn't do it, even if she would leave me. Then I got treated to a screech-concert and a glass to the head. She walked out the door and her lawyer called about five minutes later to told me she'll be around later today to pick up her stuff. Good enough reason for me to finish off the wine by my lonesome. Shame to waste a perfectly good bottle."

"Celebration?" Xander suggested. "Hey, you're finally rid of 'demon'-ica. Halleluja, you deserve a good belt for that."

"Celebration," Tara thought for a moment. "Well, yeah, I suppose. Yes and no. Still, my time with Angelica hasn't been all bad."

Or had it? Though their relationship had started with fiery passion, it had cooled relatively quickly. In fact, Tara doubted if she had ever truly loved Angelica. Oh, she was pretty and the sex was stupendous, but Angelica was arrogant and mean. She looked down on Tara's choice of movie genre, she acted as if she was Paris Hilton towards her family because they weren't rich. Angelica openly disapproved of Tara choice of friend friends and did her best to sabotage Tara's relationship with her friends at every opportunity. Luckily for her, her friends were not stupid.

But still, she had invested two years of her life in this relationship, and they did have fun... at times. So, yes, Tara still thought it was sad.

"Just took the winebottle, popped a couple of my favorites in my DVD-player... The Thing, Suspiria, Lady Frankenstein. I think I also watched Re-Animator, but I was probably too drunk to remember at the time," Tara said.

"Ah, timeless classics. At least Angelica won't pressure you into getting rid of your collection anymore," Xander chuckled on the other end of the line.

"True, true," Tara replied. "I think I'll stay a happy bachelorette for a long, long, loooonnngggg time. I dunno, Xand, all the girls I end up falling for turn out to be either straight or bitches straight from hell. Face it, I'm a magnet for misfortune."

"Don't be like that, Tar," Xander replied. "Look, I can toss a few cliches about how things'll get better and that there's more fish in the sea... But when push comes to shove, I mean, even kissing a tuna-fish is a step up from Angelica. Come on, Tara, what where you thinking?!"

"Hey," Tara chuckled. "What are you trying to say?"

"I mean, you considered the Bitch from Hell good dating material and let her inside of your personal circle. Talk about a lapse in judgment."

"Again, hey!" Tara chuckled.

"No, no, no. Now that you've broken up with her, I've got the right to speak my mind without fear of repercussions. Let me just say that Angelica is one of the few people who deserved to have her guts ripped out by a rabid were-deer. I'll grab a bucket of popcorn and watch when the aliens strap her onto the probulator. We'll see who's a 'talentless bum' then, ey. Oh, gods, I thought of it... when the tabloids find out about your break-up, it'll be huge publicity for you. I'm sure she's going to pin all the blame on you."

"Alright, alright, alright," Tara sighed. "Enough about Angelica, please. I, uhm, have other news. Yesterday evening I got the call from Mick Garris..."

Silence at the other end of the line.

"And? Well? Tell the Xand-man! Enquiring minds need to know!"

Tara chuckled. "Short attention span, ey, Xander? But, yeah. We got the episode."

More silence on the other end of the line.

"Oh, man, wicked!" Xander replied. "Why didn't you say anything, Tara? Oh, this is big. Are you going to..."

"Get the old crew together? You bet," Tara grinned. "Got some calls to make, Xand. Just get your make-up kit ready."

"Have FX-kit, will travel!" Xander replied. "See you soon, Tare!"

---

Evening was approaching fast and Tara had had a busy day. After phoning Xander, her first order of business had been to down some aspirin, some breath-mints, a shower and a fresh set of clothes. After that, she had calls to make.

Tara relaxed at her table over a nice meal of chinese take-out. Tara loved chinese take-out, but hadn't been able to eat it at home for two years because Angelica thought it was beneath her. In fact, Tara had to get rid of a lot of things she really liked to accommodate her now gone-lover. Tara had spent all day restoring her house as it had been pre-Angelica... all her horror posters were back where they belonged, and now that Angelica's crystal dolphins were out in the trashbin, all her collector's items were all back in the display cases where they belonged.

Tara held up her glass of soda and held it towards the only photo of Angelica left in the house. "Here's to you, Angelica. You did me a favor. I'm done with love... No more for me."

Yep, Tara thought. I can do whatever I want now. I can wear slacks all day... I can watch movies all evening without being dragged along the latest party where Hollywood's shallowest gather... I can decorate my house with whatever I want without having to worry about the latest fung-whatsit trend... I can eat what I wanna eat... Hell, I can even walk around naked if I wanted to. Ah, freedom...

The movie-posters of her own accomplishment, her own movies, now hung on a prominent place in her cozy living room. 'The Veil', about a girl in a coma losing grip on reality on the edge of death. 'Accidental Monster-kill', a horror-comedy about a Vincent Price-style actor in B-horror movies who gets kidnapped by fans and finds himself confronted by monsters that are all too real. 'Blood-drinkers', where a small town finds its inhabitants muting into feral vampires. 'Mazes and Trolls' in which a young PnP roleplayer finds himself the only sane person left in the world. 'Rarebit Nutters' a story of a group of kids who stay in an abandoned asylum that doesn't turn out to be haunted at all, but are done in by their own distrust. 'House of the Lonely' a whodunit style mystery... with psychopaths... and zombies. And she still had to get another batch of posters out of storage.

These films were her children. Each and every one of them. And to think she had had to hide these in her own home. For the last six months, she had put all her creative efforts on hold to try to salvage a doomed relationship. What a waste of time...

The Masters of Horror episode would be a fresh new and creative start of the rest of her life. Masters of Horrors was serial of hour-long TV episodes in which different famous horror directors would be given almost complete creative control in the making of them. It was exactly what Tara needed right now.

While still eating her take-out, Tara went over a few scripts and story-proposals she had taken from her file-cabinet. Over her decade-long career, she had bought the rights to quite a few stories, and a saved a lot of scripts that had been rejected from earlier proposals to studios. Plenty of material to chose from, and she needed the right story for this episode.

Hm, Tara thought while she took another bite from her chicken. Giant ants taking over Manhattan. Gi-ants? Uhm, no... she thought and picked up another script. The Grim Reaper running for congress? Why did I ever buy this crock of shit? Next! Hm, what's this? Sentient rats? No... High-schoolers trapped in a hellish convent? Nah, I need something funny.

Almost by chance, Tara picked a story called 'Survival of the Fittest' from the pile. Hey, I forgot about this one, Tara said to herself. It was a dark comedic story about two active serial killers living in the same suburb, who had picked each other as their next target while oblivious to each other's activities. It also starred a who just moved into the neighborhood and got caught in the middle of this struggle.

Tara smiled that mysterious half-smile of hers. "Perfect..."

---

One week later, gathered in Tara's living room and all eating chinese take-out, were Tara's friends and the crew she had been working with for the past decade. It had not been easy to schedule each and not all of them were there.

Xander, currently buried in his chicken gung bao, was someone she had known since high-school. Always into things gory and macabre, Xander had enrolled in the legendary Tom Savini's classes and was now running his own small, independent FX-studio called 'The Zeppo'.

Faith, leaning back and wearing her trademark black cap, was Tara's usual camera-person. She had a talent for getting difficult shots done in single takes and could always get the best quality picture out of even the most substandard pieces of equipment.

Buffy was a perky set-designer and location scout. The petite blonde was a walking encyclopedia of all kind of locations, as well as a designer with an incredible eye for detail. Not to mention perpetually happy.

And then there was Cordelia. A good costume designer, but someone who was easily bored with a production. It was, perhaps, a good thing that this episode would have a rather short production-time compared with a feature film.

Lastly there was Anya, the resident beancounter. It was her job to make sure Tara kept both feet firmly on the ground. Though Anya and Tara had had many heated 'creativity versus budget'-arguments in the past, she always made sure Tara's movies were finished mostly on budget and on schedule. She would be filling in the role of executive producer.

Veruca, Tara's usual composer and sound designer, was off on another project and would join them as soon as she was able. Dawn, Buffy's younger sister, was a licensed stuntwoman, would be joining them at location.

"Well, we all got the script," Tara said, and all her friends held up their copies. "Alright, I've been calling with Mick and we'll be shooting in Canada, Vancouver area. The rest is up to us."

"Perfect," Anya piped in. "Much cheaper to shoot there."

The rest groaned a little before Tara continued. "We also got our budget set. Buffy, any ideas?"

"Well," Buffy rubbed her chin. "I'll have to make some calls, but we could shoot in Sunny Pines. It's a suburb that could easy pass for american if we dress it up a little. It would be perfect for the outside shots and its not too far from the Sanguine studio lot."

"I've heard of Sanguine," Anya replied. "We could shoot the indoor shots there and not lose too much of the budget."

"I recommend building a set at the studio for the garden-chase scene," Buffy said. "It's simply easier to build a set than to ask permission and get the permits to storm through people's backyards."

"Cheaper too," Anya said.

"Alright, you work your magic, Buff. Let's talk interior sets," Tara asked.

"Well," Buffy bit her lip. "We need three houses. One for Killer 1, one for Killer 2 and one for Rosemary."

"Hold on," Anya checked her notes. "I see there's nothing used beyond a living room, a bedroom, kitchen and a basement in each wall. And we need a couple of stairwells. I recommend we simply build one type of room and redress each of the rooms as we shoot."

"We could do that," Buffy said. "All houses have the same design in these kinds of suburbs, so it shouldn't be to difficult to redress. I can make them all look different, don't worry. We'll let movie-magic do the rest."

"Agreed," Tara replied. "But I really want to have two separate basement sets. The basement is the inner sanctum for each killer, so I want them to be absolutely distinct. No redresses. I'll give you more details as soon as I have them myself, Buff. Still working on the Bible."

"One more issue," Anya pointed out. "'Survival of the Fittest' might not appeal to religious right viewers. I recommend changing the title to something like 'Suburban Jungle'. Idea?"

"Yeah, Ahn," Xander spoke up. "Let's make the movie first before we start changing the title, okay?"

"Marketing is important, Xander!"

"Costumes!" Cordelia spoke up. "Have you worked on the character descriptions yet?"

"I'll e-mail those to you later today," Tara said. "They're almost done, but I have some more minor details to work out."

"Great," Cordelia said. "It'll be handy to have an idea before the actors step through my door."

"No designer clothing, okay?" Anya pressed. "Not unless there is a specific reason to do so."

"Oh, you tightass. God," Cordelia sighed. "If I were cutting up someone with a hacksaw, I know would wanna to look good."

"Alright," Tara grinned at Xander, "there's ample opportunity for gore. We've got four random victims for our killers to play with, as well as past victims."

"I will make you carved up puppets that look so real, we'll all get arrested when the police raids us," Xander grins. "I'll have my make-up kit ready to make our actors look bruised, cut up, maimed and killed!"

"Good," Tara replied. "Now, actors..."

"I knew we forgot about something," Faith chuckled.

"I'm thinking we should go with local actors, unknowns mostly," Tara replied. "We need two killers, one leading lady and four victims."

"I agree," Anya said. "We'll already have the Masters of Horror name attached to our project, and it's know that you're directing, Tara. We don't really need big names to attract an audience."

"Really?" Tara replied. "I was kinda hoping we could cast Jeffrey Combs. Or maybe Ron Perlman. Or both."

"No!" Anya crossed her arms and shook her head resolutely. "They'll take a huge chunk out of our budget. If locals are just as good, we can use them."

Xander scraped his throat. "Ahum, Tara, you've had lunch with all the other directors, right? So, let's shove this all aside for a bit, because I really wanna know what the others are doing."

"Yeah," Buffy replied. "I'm kinda curious myself."

"Well," Tara thought for a moment. "I know John is doing something kinda like In the Mouth of Madness. It's all about the 'sanctity of film', but even John himself says it's a bullshit concept(*). Of course, he was stoned at the time."

"When is he not?" Faith chuckled.

"Stu is doing H.P. Lovecraft, no surprises there. It's going to be very good, I think. Oh, and Dario has got a really wild and creepy story. Sort of an inverted Beauty and the Beast, but you'll really have to see this one for yourself, so I won't spoil anything. Johnny Landis has a parody piece, as always. It's about a detective tying to make sense of a series op supernatural murders done by a mythological creature," Tara replied.

"Whoa," Faith whistled. "Impressive line-up. How are we gonna measure up to those?"

"By making a great story come to life through love and team effort?" Tara half-smiled. "Just a suggestion."

"Good point," Faith smirked. "Got my camera handy. What's George Romero doing, by the way?"

"He's no longer participating," Tara said. "Lucky is taking his place. He's writing a story which, he says, is a twisted lesbian love-story. And it involves insects somehow. I guess I'll find out when I'll see it. But I've already warned him that those lesbians had better be alive at the end of the story."

"Yeah, they'd better," Faith grit her teeth. (**)

"Well," Tara grinned. "Let's get to work. We'll see each other tomorrow. I should have the bible finished and Angel'll start with the story-boarding."

"Alright!" Faith clapped her hands. "Let's get something on celluloid!"

"Huh?" Cordelia frowned. "I thought we were using digital camera's?"

"Figure of speech! Sheesh, grow a brain already!" Faith replied.

---

In a cold theatre in Vancouver rented for the occasion, Tara and Faith sat in the front row. Pre-production was almost over after only 6 weeks. Anya had taken on the more menial tasks of renting and buying supplies, while Buffy and her crew were almost finished building the sets in the Sanguine studio. Rather than renting out a hotel, a small village of trailers had been set up in the studio lot. Tara always preferred a small and tight crew, and this way, shooting almost felt more like a camping trip than actual work.

Casting had gone well, and Tara had found two actors to play the serial killers. A young actor named Jimmy Dumont would play Bruce, the youngest of the killers, who murdered his victims with a set of garden tools. A more experienced actor called Rene Perrin, would play Andy, a more sophisticated killer who murdered his victims by strangling them with a pianowire. The bit-parts of the four victims were easily found... but Rosemary took some more time. Shooting was scheduled to begin next week, and still having no leading lady was giving Tara quite a bit of stress.

In the end, Tara called for an open casting for local, hoping that the right girl would come along. She and Faith had seen many girls on the stage today, but still weren't any closer to finding the perfect Rosemary.

The blonde girl on the stage took a bow and walked off.

"What do you think?" Tara whispered to Faith. "I don't really think she captured the role."

Faith shook her head. "I think you're being kind. Her acting was bad enough to make puppies cry. And I don't think she'll look the part on camera. Our leads are way taller than her. It won't work, T."

"Alright," Tara called out. "Thank you for reading, Mindy. Next actress, please," she said, putting an 'x' behind Mindy's name on her clipboard.

Without looking at the stage, Tara flipped through the resume of the next actress. Lessee, 29 years old, more or less constant stream of work over the past five years. All stage work... very little experience with film, save for two television commercial advertisements. Some voice-over work.

Tara looked up to the new actress on the stage... and saw the single most nervous looking girl she had ever seen in her life. The willowy thin girl stood there, in a pink wooley sweater, almost ready to start hyperventilating at any moment. Her long red hair cascaded over her shoulders, which trembled as the girl shook from her nerves. Her gorgeous green eyes started from Tara to the script to the emergency exit as if to keep an eye on the nearest escape route.

"H-hi," the girl struggled over the word. "I-I'm Will..."

The microphone emitted a loud mechanical howl, causing both Tara and Faith to wince.

"Oh, I'm s-so s-sorry, I..." the girl accidentally knocked over the microphone stand, causing it to clatter to the wooden stage.

On the side, the actresses still waiting at the side of the stage giggled loudly. But they were quickly silenced by Tara, who directed an angry scowl in their general direction. Realizing they had made a serious faux-pas, the other actresses quickly shut their mouths and avoided Tara's scowl.

She shook her head. Tara simply didn't tolerate that kind of behaviour.

The girl on the stage, her face as red as her hair, quickly picked up the microphone-stand. "I, uhm, I'm so sorry. I'll... I'll go now."

"No!" Tara exclaimed before she could catch herself. "I mean, it's alright. Please, could you read for us?"

A genuine smiled formed on the girl's face before she started again. "H-hi, I'm W-Willow Rosenberg. R-reading for the part of R-rosemary."

Rene came out to help Willow read for the part. Both of them prepared for the first scene the actresses had been given. The scene was a simple introduction between the two character, yet was essential to measure the chemistry and ability of an actress.

Willow centered herself briefly and performed the scene. But to Tara, it more of a transformation than an actual performance. Gone was the nervous klutzy girl that had stepped on the stage. Willow had literally become Rosemary, exactly as Tara had imagined her.

After Willow was done, Tara turned to Faith. "Perfect delivery," Tara whispered.

"She's photogenic too," Faith replied. "Right size. She'd do."

"Willow," Tara said, liking how that name rolled over her tongue. "Could you please read the second scene for us?"

The second scene was a confrontation between Andy and Rosemary, more emotionally charged than the first scene. But Willow also pulled this one off to perfection. Tara could tell even Rene was impressed with her performance.

"I think she's a natural," Tara whispered to Faith.

"Amazing," Faith blinked. "She looked ready to pee her pants when she first came on stage. Hey, you think she's been replaced with a pod-person while we were looking?"

"What?!"

"Hey, Aliens can freeze time now. I read it in this tabloid, T."

Tara shook her head and turned back to Willow. "Willow, could you please read the third scene for us?"

The other actresses murmured nervously, as Willow had been the first girl to be allowed to read this third scene. The third scene was a long emotionally laden exposition scene. And Willow pulled it off magnificently yet again. Her delivery, her diction, her expression, her stance... it was all perfect.

Tara turned to Faith. The two friends smiled and nodded to each other. They had their Rosemary.

"Thank you very much, Willow," Tara told the girl. Willow smiled gently and left the stage. Tara circled Willow's name on her clipboard and put an exclamation mark next to it. She's let the other actresses read, out of courteousy, but she was eager to give Willow the call as quickly as possible.

Shooting could and would begin in a week.

(*) I'm not putting words in John Carpenter's mouth. He actually said the concept of his story 'Cigarette Burns' was 'bullshit'. But it was creepy, and that's all that matters.

(**) For the record, both lesbian characters survive with their sanity intact at the end of the episode 'Sick Girl' and have a happy ending. It looks like at least one person in Hollywood finally got it right. :)

Charming story. I love how protective Tara is of Willow. It's like seeing what would have happened if the later seasons self confident Tara had met the earlier Willow. Somehow I don't think Willow will run off stage when its Tara she'd be leaving out to dry. I look foward to reading more.

I am so tickled to be reading this. I am a huge fan of the Masters of Horror series, although it's taking a while to acquire all of them. I love how well you fit all the scoobies into their respective crew roles, and of course the lovely Willow Rosenberg in centre spotlight.

This is going to be brilliant. :) Please update soon.

UO
This is nifty! I'm not familiar with the series, but it sounds like fun, and makes a perfect situation for a W&T story. Everybody fits their role so well too. Tara didn't seem too cut up about the departure of her girlfriend. I hope she doesn't try too hard to stick to her 'no more love' resolution.

Looking forward to more.
Thanks

When I started reading this I had no idea what Masters of Horror was. I don't generally get into horror films or shows so I was definitely oblivious. And I like it, a lot. Its nothing like I thought it would be. Great start, and great job.

Wow. Like always amazing start. Actually I don't like horror movies or even horror stories. But reading about doing such a movie seems to be fun after reading the first part of your story. Thanks. I already like it. Tara as confident director (kinda reminds me of Amber) and Willow as the shy little mouse (kinda expected her to perform the queen of pain crying Aly always does).

Hehe. I'm counting on Willow not having a clue about Tara's and Faith's decision of her being the right Rosemary. It's also nice that her character is called Rosemary. It reminds me of the only horror movie (if you would call it one) I ever liked: Rosemary's Baby.

Although I'm glad Angelica is gone I would like to give her credit for the disliking of horror films. Not because it's trash just because I don't like this scary sort of films.
She's not drivin stick anymore?

Great story so far. :peace

For some reasons, I have always liked fics about Willow + Tara + movies. I have seen a few of the Masters of Horror movies, and when I saw the title of the fic I was a little worried. (you can guess which one of the movies I thought it was, one with a so-called insect in it) Now I can breathe out of relief, and continue reading.. I hope nothing bad happens to Willow and Tara in this. And if it does, I hope they'll get out of it with arms, throats and minds in one piece.
Tara: Do whatever that makes you.. h-happy.
Willow: She is my everything.

Ah, a UO story - my leetle heart went pitter patter when I saw it posted.

The assertive/leader Tara character is interesting, and I'm interested in what you will do with her.

Veruca as sound engineer, heh? Hmmm...

Looking forward to more.

UO,
You grace us with a new concept to fill the void , hooray.
Love the set-up to this one already.
"She still wanted me to quit making horror and move on to, as she put it, more lucrative genres."

Good riddance to bad rubbish in the from of Angelica for maing such a crass and cult of mediocrity assertion.
You have taken a less popular pairing and made it entirely genuine in the form of Tara/Xander; bonded as they are in their shared love of gore, horror, and all things innardy bits spilling out.
Tara as a bold, assertive director who knows what she wants. I can totally see her as an aspect of her real-life counterpart.
Amber herself is an avowed devotee of eviscerations and ritual disembowelments.
Hell, I can even walk around naked if I wanted to. Ah, freedom...

I'm just going to pause here and imagine this magical imagery. MMMM...naked Tara.
Very daring and playing against type almost to make Tara the strong independent self-confident director and yet Willow is still well, how we know and love her, the flame-haired bundle of nerves.
Tara leaps to her protection and under Tara's encouragement is imbued with confidence to nail the audition and ensure that love will once again win out amid blood, gore, and guts.
And they say romance is dead.
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.
Amberhol-from the land of sky blue waters.

Horror! I'm instantly in love with the idea of Tara being a horror director, I can just imagine her as one of the (rare) breed who know what they're doing and take the time to actually frighten, rather than just shovelling some gore on the screen and thinking it's the same thing. The opening was very revealing (I don't just mean the notion of Tara walking around naked), and I liked Tara putting all her posters and memorabilia back in its place - kind of like she was just putting herself back the way she was meant to be, which sets her up perfectly to meet Willow. Or would, if she hadn't just decided she wasn't interested in dating anyone ;-) But I imagine that notion won't last long.

I liked all the Buffy cast as Tara's crew - they all worked, but my favourite is Xander as a Savini-graduated makeup artist, that just works perfectly. I wonder if he was one of the zombies in Land of the Dead? Speaking of Savini, I liked seeing all the names I'm (vaguely) familiar with sprinkled around, it helped a lot to give this a nice real tone.

Great start. I'm so glad Tara's willing to give Willow a chance, and even happier that Tara's single so the two can get together!!! :banana

"Amazing," Faith blinked. "She looked ready to pee her pants when she first came on stage. Hey, you think she's been replaced with a pod-person while we were looking?"

"What?!"

"Hey, Aliens can freeze time now. I read it in this tabloid, T."

Alien freezing time, way cooool! :lol
Can't wait to see them start working with Willow!

I pretty much never leave feedback because I never know what to say other than "I like, it r gud," but this prompted me to do so because... Masters of Horror! I'd never even HEARD of it, but I love me some horror flicks. So because of you I now have several more gigs of hard drive space devoted to film. I've only watched the first three so far, but I'm liking it a lot.

Love that you have given us confident Tara and shy Willow. It's like taking their canon and switching it around. I'm anxious to see how their relationship develops, and if truth be told, more anxious to 'see' this episode Tara's directing.
I am the ground zero ex-friend you ordered, disguised as a hero to get past your borders.

Dianneswillowtree - Thanks for the vote of confidence! Update is just a few seconds away.

Selena Taiki - I've quite enjoyed write this role-reversal or a sorts. Tara's instantly protective of Willow, which is also something I like. The funniest and loveliest love-stories are love-stories where the characters don't even realize when they're in love, imo. More is on the way.

Pancakesinbellies - Thanks so much! Love your profile-name, btw. More in a few seconds!

Pinocchio1940 - Thank you. I hope you'll this tale as well.

Diamondforever - Ah, another fan! I remember when I first found out about Masters of Horror and thought what a wonderful idea it was. I never expected it to be as great as it turned out to be. The shorted episodic hour-long format works very well imho. It's sort of condensed horror, a horror film with all the fat trimmed, so it has a faster pace. Does that make sense? I think Deer Woman was one of my favorites, though Jenifer was, by far, the creepiest. It was also wonderful to see John Carpenter's spectacular return to form. Update is ready in a few seconds.

Anne - Glad you like the premisse of the story. You're right, Tara isn't very mournful of the loss of her lover. Hell, she's finally free of her! :party More is on the way!

Willohand - Hope you're alright. :) More is on the way.

Writerfreak - Glad you like it. This is more about making a horror-film and a film in general than an actual horror-film itself. Of course, I have to gloss over some aspects of film-making, since the main storyline is a W/T romance and the relationships between the people on the set. :) More is on the way. :)

Sacinema - Thanks. Glad you're enjoying the story so far. Oh, the queen of pain-thing Alyson does so well. Seriously, she can break your heart in half with that look of hers. :paranoid

Rosemary was indeed a reference to Rosemary's baby. I would definitely count it as a horror film. The worst and scariest monsters don't always have fangs or claws, after all.

Angelica had to go. You'll find out more about her in the third part, and why Tara's so happy so see her go, in the end.

Darkness - Yeah, I know which episode you mean. Still, it wasn't such a bad episode. And it had a happy ending, of a sort. They are alive and together, after all. And don't worry about Willow and Tara. Tara's behind the screen and Willow's got a stunt-double. ;-)

Boschi - Thanks! It was nice placing Tara in the leader role. :) And, Veruca, well, I always found her a bit sexier than Oz, so I tend to prefer to use her over him. My bad. :) She's not a Willow-hater in this story, though.
More is on the way! :)

Taralicious - Tara is a happy bachelorette again now that Angelica is gone. There's more details on Tara's ill-fated relationship with her in part 3. I think horror-loving Tara would find more than a soul-mate in Xander. Of course, they've been working together since high-school. :)

Is Amber a horror-fan? I never knew that! Wow, I think my heart-beat just increased twofold! :D

Well, the whole point of Uber is placing these characters in a different light, because of different backgrounds. I think it makes sense to see Tara as confident in this role. Hollywood is a snake-pit, after all, and you have to be assertive to keep standing in such an environment. Uber is a safe way of playing with characters because you've got a lot more freedoms to work with than with canon fanfic. I think Willow is a bit more self-conscious than she's been in the show (excepting, perhaps, first season Willow). You're right, Tara's instantly protective of her, which is also a nice thing to play around with.

Chris - The idea for this come to me during a long and boring busride while I was itching to see the latest Masters of Horror episode back home. Tara fits her role in this story very well, I feel, though I might be a bit biased towards that. ;) In a way, this story is about finding yourself again after some time, both for Tara and for Willow (more on that in part 3).

I liked sprinkling these names around because these are the original masters of horror which directed all he episodes. I can imagine all these people being Tara's friends. :)

And I'm pretty sure you couldn't beat Xander away from the Land of the Dead set! :D

Cynthia Taz Heheheh, Tara instantly likes Willow... and I'm not surprised. Who wouldn't like Willow? :D

Katez0r - Ah, now that I love to hear. Glad there's a new Masters of Horror fan! :) Yeah, these episodes are so great. Be sure to watch Deer Woman, Cigarette Burns and Jeniffer!

I'm afraid you'll only catch glimpses of the episode Tara is making. This story is more about the behind the scenes stuff and the developing relationship between Willow and Tara. But there's some stuff about the episode they're filming in there too.

Hello, fellow kitters. The new update of Masters of Horror is ready to be released to the public. Originally, I intended it to be a three-parter, but after part two ran very long, I decided to split it into two updates. It's still rather long, but snipping it into three parts would have ruined the momentum. I hope you'll enjoy this update.

Title - Masters of Horror

Chapter 2 - Shooting. Day 1-5

All the people directly involved in the story during the production of Tara's supposed 14th episode are fictional, per the rules of the site.

Alien Quadrology DVD extra material
Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVD extra material (all three films)

Masters of Horror : Shooting Day 1-5

Day one

Willow was nervous. In fact, she was so nervous she had to fight to keep her body from shaking. This was her first film-production, which meant filming out of sequence. Before, she had only done work on the stage, which had a very distinct way of storytelling. Beginning - middle - end. But this... this was another beast entirely. This production was to be shot in chunks rather than as a chronological whole. And even though she had been given a locked script and had been given a booklet showing the entire storyboard, the prospect was still more than a little daunting.

Still, Miss Maclay had chosen her, her of all those actresses that had read for the part. And Willow had no intention to let her down.

But then again, there were a lot of people running around, which made Willow slightly nervous.

The little suburb was nice enough, but there were crew everywhere. She had never expected so many people to work on a movie production. Most activity was at the make-up trailers, where the other actors were already being treated and dressed. Techies were setting up equipment here and there, while the caterers were running back and forth bringing everyone the breakfasts that would otherwise be skipped.

Willow had had very little sleep last night, which was not a good thing because today would be a very long day. She had spend extra time going over the script again and again to get a good feel for her character. Rosemary was a young woman who was new to the neighborhood after having run away from an unhappy and abusive relationship. No problem relating to that, Willow thought to herself, before pushing those feelings away. In any case, Rosemary was still recovering from the abuse and trying to rebuild her life... and that was when she would run into two serial killers. The key to her character was that she was the only one who knew (or would come to realize) that both of them were in fact, serial killers, before either of them would know.

"Hey, you're Willow, right?" sounded behind her. She turned around to see a tall and haughty brunette staring at her.

"Uh, yeah. Hi?"

"Okay, we're behind schedule, so we have to get you dressed immediately," the woman said. "My name is Cordelia Chase, but you may refer to me as miss Chase. Now, let's get you into some clothes."

Before Willow could respond, Cordelia practically pulled her into the trailer and pushed her behind the dressing screen. "Now," she said, presenting Willow with her costume. "I went out to the local mall to get these. Your character is young and is trying to find herself, so I changed these clothes accordingly. I ripped some parts of these Levi's, but I ripped them in unfashionable places. You'll also be wearing this pink turtleneck, but I've embroidered some patterns in it and you'll see that the colors clash, so the viewers will know that something's off without it being obvious."

Willow didn't argue, but changed into her costume.

"Perfect," said Cordelia as she stepped out. Cordelia tugged on the sweater and tugged a little at the belt. "But then again, you're already fashion-challenged in real life, so you shouldn't have any problems. But you have lovely hair, honey, so don't worry about it."

Willow found herself pushed out of the trailer and guided towards the make-up trailer. "Off with you. Xander's turn to work his magic on you."

Gee, I hope he's nicer than you. Sheesh, Willow pouted. Fashion bitca...

And then Willow saw her. Tara. She came speeding down the road on a racing bicycle, her honeyblonde hair whipping in the wind.

---

It was early morning and Tara arrived on the set in style. Tara hated cars, so she travelled either by subway, bus or, preferably, a bike. Of course, Angelica insisted that Tara'd buy a sportscar, and, as usual, Tara had given in. One of the most satisfying things about her break-up with Angelica, aside from the return of her many horror-memorabilia, was that she had traded in her red porsche for a red racing bike.

She handed her bike to one of the gaffers and surveyed the set. Things were looking good and shooting could begin in mere minutes. Setdressers and techies had already been working yesterday to set up the camera tracks, the lighting and audio equipment and preparing the outside locations. Buffy's crew had been at work putting 'additions' to the houses they'd shoot, so their exterior would match the interior sets better.

"Sorry I'm a bit late," Tara said. "I had to check in on Buffy and the studio sets. How are things here?"

The heads of several departments started talking to her all at once. Tara interrupted them and told them to speak in turn. While she was listening to their reports, however, she noticed Willow standing in the back, apparently debating wether or not she should come over and talk to her.

Tara decided to make the decision for her. "Excuse me a moment," Tara told her assistants. "I think my leading lady needs to speak to me."

Willow hear Tara and blushed slightly.

"Hello, Willow, nice to see you again," Tara smiled at her, making Willow blush even more. "Are you okay? You look a bit flushed."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, I, just, uh," Willow stammered.

"Come," Tara smiled and led Willow to a more quiet spot near the make-up trailer, away from the main bustle.

"I, uh, I just wanted to, uhm... Wait, before I say anything, I'm not toadying or anything, but... I just wanted to thank you for giving me a chance. I always get so nervous at auditions... and when I get nervous, I turn into the biggest spaz on the planet. You saw me at the audition... I usually don't get much work outside of the stage, well, ever. So, I wanted to thank you for the opportunity. And, uhm, I just wanted to know I'm going to do my very, very best and I won't let you down."

"I know, Willow," Tara smiled. "Relax, you'll do fine. But you must go into the make-up trailer now, or we won't be able to shoot. Well, we will be able to shoot, but your face will look shiny on film," Tara joked.

"Oh, alright!" Willow gasped. "I'll, um, go to see Xander right now. Thanks again, miss Maclay."

"Oh, Willow!" Tara called after Willow. "Please just call me Tara. Everybody else does."

Willow nodded and smiled before walking off to the make-up trailer.

I swear, she gets cuter by the minute, Tara thought before a clipboard was pressed into her hands. It was a stack of invoices for her to sign. Though it wasn't really her job, Anya always made sure Tara'd get the invoices and bills shoved under her nose so she'd have an idea of budget and costs.

Shooting would take 10 days, 8 of which in the studio, and two on location. Anya had weighed the budget and with rent and permits, had decreed that two days were enough to shoot the day and night exterior scenes. With any other crew, Tara would have thought that to be impossible, but she just knew hers would pull it off. Tara got ready for a long day of shooting, for they needed to do as many scenes and shots as possible at once. To that end, she'd made sure that all her actors had met the previous day, so they could get comfortable around each other.

But, no more time to waste. Tara headed out to her director's chair to film the first scene. Willow was already on her spot. The first scene was a simple introductory scene of the characters Rosemary and Bruce to start off easy.

"Alright," Tara called out. "Light ready? Camera ready? All mobile phones off, or I swear I'll throw then into the nearest pond! Let's go, people. Action!"

---

"Yeah, yeah," Rosemary looked away from Bruce. "I just moved in... couple of days ago."

Bruce, who had been jogging, took off his sweatband and took a few deep breaths. "Oh, the old Steadman house. I've heard there was a new tenant. So, where are you from, Rosemary?"

"Uh, well, I," Rosemary hesitated for a moment. "Reno. Reno, actually. Lived there for five years, till I figured it was time to move on."

"Reno?" Bruce chuckled. "I bet you're gonna have to get used to the quiet, then. Nothing much happens around here. Unless you count crazy miss Drimple's cat catching fire."

"Huh?" Rosemary gasped. "That's awful!"

"Nah," Bruce chuckled. "It's a pinyata. She's had her cat freeze-dried after it died and she leaves it out in the sun too long."

"Oh," Rosemary smiled. "Well... I can use a little peace and quiet, in any case."

"Need some help carrying these boxes inside?"

"Uh, no, no," Rosemary said quickly. "I'll, uh, I'll manage. Thank you."

"Suit yourself," Bruce put on his headband again and prepared to jog on. "See you around, neighbor."

"Thank you," Rosemary smiled. "Bye!"

"CUT!" Tara yelled. Immediately, all the people gathered around the two actors started moving and working all at once.

"Scene 5, take 3. Finished," shouted Tara's assistant.

"Okay," Tara added. "I want one more take of this scene after our break. Take five, everyone."

Willow smiled at Jimmy when he passed her. She, again, felt a bit intimidated by the huge number of people surround her. She'd already seen a huge crew this morning, but it only seemed to grow larger during shooting. On the stage, there'd be a technical crew of three, audio crew of two and a lighting crew of two. For this relatively simple scene of two people talking, there were more than sixty people buzzing around. People with microphones, people operating the cameras, people adjusting lights, people running back and forth from one department to another, a loud-mouth producer shouting into her cell-phone, make-up crew, costume crew... It was more than a little overwhelming. And it make Willow feel somewhat insecure.

Willow saw Tara walk towards a series of monitors set up near the make-up trailer for viewing of the shot materials.

"Faith?" Willow asked as she came across Faith and one of her crew pulling the camera back across the dolly-track to reset the camera for the scene. "Can I ask you something?"

Faith adjusted her trademark cap. "Sure. As long as it doesn't involve the words 'money' and 'borrow' in the same sentence, we're five-by-five."

"I was just thinking about the scene we just did," Willow said. "Why did we have to do three takes? I mean, I'm just I must have gotten it right? Do you think I did something wrong?"

"Nah, don't worry about it," Faith smiled. "Tara's like that. Whenever there's a key scene, Tara likes shooting some extra takes, all of them slightly different. It helps her puts things together during editing. I wouldn't think to much about it."

Willow's relief was so obvious it made Faith smirk. "Don't worry, Willow. You're doing fine, and you're not letting Tara down. Hell, I bet she's very happy to have you around, beautiful."

"T-thanks," Willow blushed, but all the while wondering what Faith meant exactly.

"What do you think of Tara?" Faith cocked her head at Willow. "Do you like her?"

"I, uh, I'm very grateful for the opportunity she has given me, and I'm going to do my very best for her..."

"That's not what I asked, now did I?" Faith winked. "Do you like Tara?"

Willow frowned. "I, uh, I'm not sure what you mean, I..."

"ALRIGHT, PLACES EVERYONE!" shouted Tara's assistant. Willow apologized to Faith and rushed back to her place on the spot while Tara took her seat and the crew stepped out of frame.

"Okay," Tara said gently. "Willow, could you try to add a little more pathos in your act? You're in a new place, away from the only home you've ever known and this whole situation of moving into a new home is very surreal for you. Jimmy, you're trying to make her feel comfortable and are trying to win her trust. Feel free to lay it on a little thicker than the last time. Maybe even make it a little more flirty. Okay, let's roll."

"Scene 5, take 4! Action!"

"Yeah," Rosemary looked away from Bruce and remained quiet for a moment. "I, uh, just moved in couple of days ago."

Bruce, who had been jogging, took off his sweatband. "Oh, the Steadman house. I've heard there was a new tenant. I'm sure you'll love it there. Where are you from, Rosemary, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Uh, well, I," Rosemary hesitated for a moment. "Reno. Reno, actually. Lived there for five years... Five years, until I... had to move on."

"Reno?" Bruce chuckled. "I bet you're gonna have to get used to the quiet, then. Nothing much happens around here. Unless you count crazy miss Drimple's cat catching fire."

"What?" Rosemary gasped. "That's awful!"

"Nah," Bruce said quickly. "You misunderstand. It's a pinyata. She's had her cat freeze-dried when it died and she leaves it out in the sun too long."

"Oh," Rosemary smiled. "I can use a little peace and quiet, right now."

"Need some help carrying these boxes inside? It's no problem."

"Uh, no, no," Rosemary said quickly. "I'll manage. Thank you."

"Suit yourself," Bruce put on his headband again and prepared to jog on. "See you around, gorgeous."

"Thank you," Rosemary smiled. "Bye," she said softly.

"CUT!" Tara smiled. "Well done, people. That's a wrap!"

---

After having several scenes under her belt, Willow once again found herself sitting in Xander's make-up chair. She liked Xander, she really did. He was funny and open, and always did his best to make her feel at ease. And Willow was grateful that Xander allowed her to relax a little. He had wonderful anecdotes about all kinds of backstage problems, including one about a light blowing out, which caused Cordelia's hair to catch fire.

"Did you hear about the one about the Gorilla that walked into the bar?" Xander asked Willow, while he was working on her.

"No," Willow giggled.

"Me neither!" Xander replied. "When you hear it, could you tell me too? I'm pretty curious about it."

Xander's make-up trailer was a big kid's playground. Willow was staring in a large mirror, flanked by shelves filled with monster-heads and all kinds of make-up colors, false hair and wigs. This trailer was a master's workshop, and special effects make-up was Xander's art.

Halfway through the story, Bruce would slice a deep gash across Rosemary's cheek with a combat knife, and since the episode was shot out of sequence, the make-up for this effect had to be applied on the very first day of filming. When Xander had started to work with smearing a mount of putting on her cheek, she wondered if it would ever work. But after Xander had applied the basic shape of the wound and played with different colors to create a sense of depth, and after he had applied the fake blood, Willow was staring her own sliced cheek in the mirror, and was pretty sure that if she'd stepped into any ER, she'd be rushed for emergency treatment.

"Et voila," Xander smiled. "One mutilated face pour madame."

"Thank you, kind sir," Willow joked. "For carving me up most horribly."

"It was my pleasure to mar your beauty," Xander said. "Would you like some fries with that?"

"No, thanks," Willow giggled. "I'll just eat it right here."

"Oh, before you go..."

"One for the album?"

Xander picked up a digital camera and took a few pictures of Willow. "Just a few reference shots, Willow," Xander said. "I'm going to have to reapply that fake wound a couple of times, and with a Hi-def reference picture, I know exactly where it starts and ends. Continuity is pretty important here, because this is gonna be on a DVD. And DVD-players have freeze frames. Crazed movie nerds all over the internet will be looking for continuity errors. Well, they won't catch me with my trousers."

"Thanks, Xander," Willow smiled. "I look great. Mutilated great."

"I can tell by the smile that you're having fun," Xander grinned. "Don't you just love horror? Just wait till you see what I have in store for the victims, Willow."

"There's some time left," Willow said. "Xander, can I ask you about Tara? How well do you know her?"

"Oh, have you got a couple of weeks?" Xander chuckled. "Me, Tara and Faith practically grew up together. Why do you ask?"

Willow shifted uncomfortably in the make-up chair. "A few hours ago, Faith asked if I 'liked' Tara."

"Well, there's a lot of Tara to like," Xander said. "She's creative, she's funny, she's devoted, she can quote all of Pinhead's lines by heart. What more could you want in a woman?"

"Someone nice," Willow looked thoughtfully. "Someone who respects you."

Xander nodded. "Tara's all that."

Willow was about to say more, but the call for the actors to appear on the set came from Tara's assistant. Xander wished Willow good luck, and when she left the trailer, Xander took out his cell phone to send Faith a text-message.

---

day 2

It wasn't even fully light yet, and Tara already had to put out the first brushfire.

Tara could hear Faith and Anya shouting at each other from the other side of the set. They were at the 'namecalling'-stage already. Faith was accusing Anya of copulating with dollar bills, while Anya let her know in no uncertain terms in which bodily orifice Faith should shove the business-end of her camera.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Tara broke in. "I won't have friends fighting here! Let's be professionals here, girls. Now, what's the problem?"

Immediately, Faith and Anya bombarded Tara with heated words and arguments.

"ALRIGHT!" Tara raised her voice. "Faith, you first."

"Tara, babe," Faith smiled sweetly. "I got this great idea for the introductory scene. We do a flyby sequence! We rent a helicopter and have it to fly low over the suburb. We'll swoop in from the forest and fly towards Rosemary's house along the road, until we settle on Rosemary looking out from the window of her house. How's that for a slice of fried gold, Tara? All we need is a chopper, an able pilot and, uh, well, a long-distance professional steady-cam with a wide-angle lens."

"What Faith-erico Fellini doesn't want to see," Anya broke in. "Is that the cost involved far exceeds the gains."

"How can you put a price on ART, you one-track-minded AMT-machine sodomiser?!"

"Rent of the chopper, rent of the pilot... and I don't even want to think about the permits involved. And what Faith didn't tell you is that we don't actually have a long-distance professional steady-cam with a wide-angle lens. We'll have to rent one, and the rent for one day is about as much as the chopper, the pilot and the permits combined! And all this for 7,5 seconds of film! I just can't clear this, Tara. It's not cost effective."

"Tara, say something! Kick her ass!"

"Tara, do the sensible thing here."

Tara thought for a moment. "Well, Faith, we're trying to sell this as an LA suburb. And this is obviously a Canadian forest. I'm afraid that if we show too much of the surroundings and the suburb itself, the viewers will know we're not in the US."

Anya smiled smugly while Faith pouted slightly.

"I do love the idea, though," Tara rubbed her chin. "Faith, could we do this as a drive-by? We could mount the camera on one of the vans and film at half speed. We'll play with projection speeds a little so we can actually accentuate the sleepy suburb atmos."

"Yes," Faith said. "We can use our main camera for that. I'd only need to rent a better wide-angle lens."

"If that's our only cost," Anya said... reluctantly. "I could live with that."

"There," Tara smiled. "Solved!"

"Look, uh," Faith turned to Anya. "I sorry about that thing I said about you and a wad of 100 dollar bills."

"Yeah, I," Anya admitted. "I'm sorry too. I'm sure your bowels are very photogenic."

Tara smiled. One problem solved, at least a 100 more to go today. A director's life was never an easy one. If her career ever went south, she could always find work as either a mediator or a psychologist.

"Hi!" Willow was greeted by a hyperkinetic brunette with a permanent smile. Of course, at the moment, she was wearing the same costume as Willow and was being fitted with a long red wig. "I'm Dawn Summers. Call me Dawnie. I'll be your stunt-double today... and any other day."

Willow shook hands with Dawn and chatted a little with her. The day had passed quickly and they were already preparing for the final shot today, which was also the final exterior shot. It was also the most complicated one. In the story, Rosemary had escaped from her captor and had managed to escape to the roof of his house. To get away, she would have to make a daring jump to the lawn below.

The camera's were set up. One was raised on a platform next to the roof for the close-up shots and another was pointed to the front of the house, from a certain distance.

The first thing Willow noticed is that Dawn was an absolute safety-freak. She'd expected a certain recklessness from a stuntwoman, but Dawn was nothing of the sort. She double, triple and quarter-checked the safety harness, tested the airmat two times and discussed the stunt with Tara for what seemed like an hour.

When cast and crew were ready to shoot, Willow was standing on the roof of the house. Of course, she was strapped into a safety harness and a lifeline, both tucked away underneath her sweater.

"Action!" said Tara.

In blind panic, Rosemary ran to the edge of the roof. She took in a sharp breath when she heard Andy ramming his hand through the attic window. Suppressing the urge to scream, Rosemary frantically searched for a way out, but found no easy way down.

Bruce started to crawl out onto the roof, and Rosemary knew she had to make a decision now. She stared down at the lawn below, and knew what she had to do. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths...

"CUT!"

Willow was released from the safety harness and was helped down to the ground. Dawn was brought up to the roof and stood at the same position Willow had been standing earlier. The moment Tara called 'Action', Dawn jumped down... rather clumsily. But looks were deceiving. At the very last moment, Dawn twisted her body in the air for an easy and safe fall on the blue mat on the lawn.

The crew applauded and set up for the next stunt. In this stunt, Dawn would jump from a low platform and simulate the landing on the lawn. Though it would look as if Dawn would have made a landing after a two-story fall, in reality she would have only have fallen for about three feet in extreme close-up.

And thus it went. Dawn ended up sprawled on the lawn. After Tara yelled 'Cut', Willow was lain on the lawn in exactly the same position as Dawn had been a few moments ago.

Rosemary groaned as her body protested from the pain. It was a rough landing, but she would have to keep moving. She had to get away. Rosemary hissed in pain as she got to her feet and limped away from the house, slowly at first, but faster as soon as she could.

She had to get away. Her life depended on it.

Andy! His lights were on! He would help her. He HAD to help her. In sheer desperation, Rosemary limped to his house, never looking back.

"CUT!" Tara called. "Thanks everybody! That's a wrap. We're done for today."

The crew applauded, both for Willow and for Dawn. Willow was confident that Hollywood magic would make these entire scene look very cool.

---

Today had been a very long first day. Filming had started early and lasted through a good part night. But this was the last day they'd do exterior shots, so the cast was allowed to sleep late... or at least a little later... Still, Willow had some questions about the scripts and as she looked out of the window of her trailer, she noticed the light was still on in Tara's trailer.

After gathering up her courage, Willow left her trailer to go to Tara.

"Oh," Willow pouted when she arrived at Tara's trailer and found that a sign which said 'Do not disturb' hung from the doorhandle.

"Hey," she heard the voice of Faith behind her. After turning around, she found Faith sitting on a bench a few feet away, calmly drawing on a cigarette. "She's probably just watching the dailies. It's okay for you to go in, though," Faith winked at her. "Don't worry. Tara needs very little sleep on shooting days."

"Uh, thanks," Willow replied, briefly wondering what Faith meant to say, and knocked on the door. "Uh, Tara? It's Willow. Can I come in, please?"

"Enter!" Tara called.

Willow did so, and found herself in a miniature studio. Aside from a lazy couch and a bed, the rest of the trailer was filled with a large monitor and professional looking viewing tools. Tara was sitting behind the monitor, watching the takes of today. A laptop had a prominent place on a desk next to the monitor. Aside from that, there was a stack of DVD's lying next to a TV-DVD combo.

"Hi, Tara," Willow said. "I'm not disturbing anything, am I?"

"Never," Tara said. "I'm almost finished cataloguing the dailies. I was planning to e-mail my dad and go to bed."

"If I'm a bother, I could just go an ask you tomorrow..."

"Nah, don't worry," Tara smiled. "Dad can wait. He knows I'm shooting right now. I'll e-mail him tomorrow. He doesn't have a cell-phone, you see? He thinks the government uses cell-phones in their mind-control experiments or something. But, your question?"

"It's, uhm, about the script. I have some questions about some scenes that's on the list today," Willow started. "It's this unchronological order in shooting. It's so different than I'm used to, but I've studied the script through and through before we started shooting and I think I figured out what made this character tick. I'm just scared I get confused and mess up continuity. So I took the script and wrote down notes of when in the script Rosemary learns of certain elements of the plot so I can keep track of how I need to act and respond to what's going on during the scene."

"Let me put that fear to rest right now," Tara smiled, inviting Willow to sit down on the couch. "I've just been watching the dailies and I have to say that you've nailed Rosemary completely. Seriously, Willow, you're a much better actress than you give yourself credit for."

Willow's only reply was a deep blush.

"I meant it, Willow," Tara said. "Continuity is so very important here, because the feeling we want to achieve is one of slow dawning horror. The viewer will know what's going on from the first couple of minutes, but Rosemary will only slowly start piecing things together. That's the fiction between viewer and character that creates the tension, and that's why need continuity between scenes."

"That's what's so hard," Willow said. "I mean, we might be shooting a scene in which Rosemary knows everything that's going on around her, and five minutes later, we could shoot a scene in which she's completely clueless. It's confusing."

"Willow, you're doing fine," Tara said. "More than fine. Just keep the script in mind when you do the scene, like you're already doing. Willow, take it from a director: you have real talent. But if you like, I'll free up some time early tomorrow morning to go over some of the script with you."

Willow looked away and blushed.

Tara smiled and sat down next to Willow.

"Hey," she whispered softly. "And stop blushing. It'll shine right through your make-up," she said, offering a half-smile which seemed to comfort Willow.

"Thanks," Willow replied. "It's just nice to hear that someone appreciates my acting for a change."

Tara frowned. "Why do you say that?"

"My parents," Willow sighed. "I was always an honor student. Everything for the grade. I had no life outside of school, not even one friend. Mom and dad were always pressuring me to get better grades, join more clubs to put on my resume... and when I finished high-school, they wanted me to apply for law-school. And I did, but I hated every moment of it. I sorta go into acting by accident, when I picked drama as a minor. I loved it from day one. And by the end of the first year, I spent more time doing drama than anything else. It was something I really wanted to do, Tara. You see, when I'm there, on the stage... I can become someone else. I can be the queen of the elves one day, a snooty debutante the other day. Maybe a super hero, or a cop. Or a villainous vampire. Anything's possible."

"And Willow," Tara asked gently. "Don't you want to be Willow?"

Willow looked away and thought for a moment.

"Most of the time," Willow sighed heavily. "I would rather just leave Willow behind and never go back to being her."

"Hey," Tara smiled and gently put her hand on Willow's shoulder.

"It's okay," Willow sniffed. "I think that hardest thing I've ever did was to tell my parents that I was dropping out of lawschool to become an actress. Of course, they were 'very disappointed' and practically disowned me. They were sure that cutting me off from their money would make me bend to their will... they were wrong. I got by. I got enough steady work in the theatre to pay the rent and live... not comfortably, but live. But, enough about Willow the Depressing One. I came here with a question about the script and here I done go and talk your ears off."

Willow rose from the couch. "I'm sorry, I…" Willow stammered and looked away. "I don't know why I'm telling you this. I never told anybody about this. I…"

"Hey," smiled Tara as she stood up and gently pushed her back to the couch again. "It's okay, Willow. I won't judge you."

"What about your parents, Tara? Do they approve of your career?" Willow asked.

Tara leaned back. "I think dad had a very good idea where I was headed. I was always making movies," Tara frowned. "I went to highschool with Faith and Xander, and we had this horror-movie club all set up. We had access to school video equipment and we made a couple of atrociously bad horror movies, and I'm talking bad with a capital B," Tara chuckled. "But we had so much fun making them. We cast friends and family as monsters or victims or heroes. I remember my brother once played a swampmonster. He was wearing this green wetsuit and this rubber halloween fish-mask."

"That must have been a sight," Willow giggled.

"Oh, yeah," Tara laughed. "Faith'd lay on the beach in a bikini and Donny'd step up all covered in sea-weed and do this 'Grrr, argh'-thingy while Faith'd play the scream queen. It was hilarious."

"Do you still have them?"

"I wouldn't throw away a piece of my cinematic history," Tara smirked. "But I sure as hell will make certain that nobody will ever see them… ever. But, we had some great times at our high-school horror club. Until some overly concerned parents got wind of it and had the schoolboard ban our club. Some religious cook or whatnot, said we were promoting devil worship in the school."

"Oh, no," Willow said. "What happened next?"

"As it turned out it was the best thing that ever happened to us," Tara smiled. "Of course, we kept making movies. My dad owns a pawnshop and he let us use some of the cameras he had in his store. The whole thing forced us to become a lot more professional. Our movies got longer and longer and our technique got better and better. Eventually, we got noticed by a local movie-buff festival and the rest is history. Me, Faith and Xander have been working together ever since."

"Are your parents proud of what you are doing?"

Tara thought for a moment. "I never knew my mom. She died when I was very young. But my dad is fine with it, as long as I make an honest living. And my brother is always lobbying to put in more blood and gore, so I guess he approves too. See," Tara said, putting her hand on Willow's shoulder, making the girl shudder slightly. "Now I know something of you, and you know something of me."

"Thanks, Tara," Willow smiled. "I feel better. I really do."

"I'm glad. Now, I think we both need to get some sleep. Busy day tomorrow."

"Sure," Willow replied as she stood up. "Goodnight, Tara."

"Goodnight, Willow."

day 3

Today would be the first day of shooting at the studio. And things couldn't be more different. Instead of outside, they'd be shooting in a huge studio hall which was right next to the trailer-village which had been set up for the cast and crew. The schedule was also a lot less hectic than it had been the past few days, so that Willow could withdraw to her trailer to rest or study the script and practise her lines when she wasn't needed on set.

But Willow couldn't resist sneaking a peek at the sets before shooting. She was amazed by the work Buffy and her crew had created. They had created a re-dressable set which looked so much like real interiors. It was almost surreal to step back and see that the walls were actually made from all-purpose plywood. Equally impressive was the garden-set. In one scene, Rosemary would be chased through a series of seven gardens... and there they stood, complete with real foliage, hedges, lawns, fences, sheds, ponds and even the odd doghouse. Of course, she wouldn't work on that set all that much, since Dawn would be doing much of those scenes.

She struck up a conversation with Buffy as she was adding the final details to the living room set. Willow found Buffy to be a nice and open woman, who was only too eager to talk about her trade.

"We made our best to furnish the sets with the characters in mind," Buffy said while she was debated with herself where to put a stylish ottoman. "You see, Andy's M.O. is strangling people with a piano-wire. He's a failed musician, but he still loves his craft, so we put in some small pictures of Handel, Mozart and some other classical composers. Everything's very neat and proper in his house. There's no stuff lying about, and the piano is the centerpiece of the room, the first thing you see when you step inside."

"It looks amazing," Willow let her eyes roam over the set. "You say you can redress these sets?"

"Oh, yeah," Buffy said. "It takes a while, though. So we'll be shooting out of sequence again. The scenes in Andy's house first, then Bruce's house, and then yours."

"What do the other sets look like when they're redressed?" Willow asked. She frowned for a moment and opened a small music box that stood on a table next to the black piano. It played a 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'.

"Well, Bruce is more a young bachelor type. Lotsa stuff lying about, and I filled it up with some old furniture from a second-hand store. He's a slob too. Now, your house, that's a little different. Most of your stuff is, well, boxed. It sorta fits with your character's state at the moment. Rosemary is searching for herself and doesn't really feel at home yet. Most of her stuff is still in boxes and there's no indication she's in any hurry to unpack them."

"Yeah," Willow said. "That really fits Rosemary's character. She's feeling displaced and insecure. It makes sense she doesn't unpack anything but the most basic of necessities."

"The devil's in the details," Buffy said. "We want the interior to represent the character, and all our decisions are Tara-approved. She knows some viewers will be looking for these kinds of details... but mostly set-dressing is appealing to the subconscious. Some viewers will know something is off if we don't get the details right.

"This is all so amazing, and a little overwhelming," Willow said. "I've auditioned for so many TV and film productions, but I never dreamed I'd actually be part of one."

"Don't worry, you're doing great," Buffy said. "Tara thinks very highly of you."

Willow blushed slightly. "S-she does?"

"You sound surprised," Buffy replied. "Yeah, she talks about you all the time."

"I'm not really used to people thinking highly of me," Willow looked away. "I mean, my theatre friends are always nice, but..." Willow looked away. She didn't want to continue. "I'm sorry, I... I think I need to go back to my trailer to, uh, study the script a little."

"Okay, Willow," Buffy said, wondering if she might have said something wrong.

---

Tara sat in her chair after inspecting the sets and intent on studying a couple of department reports tied to a clipboard. Suddenly, her light was blocked. She looked up and saw Xander and Faith standing in front of her, looking rather smug.

"Settle a bet?" Faith grinned knowingly.

"Alright," smiled Tara. She could never deny her friends their joke. "I'll bite. What's the bet?"

"Willow's panties," Faith chuckled. "I'm betting she's a black lace kinda gal. Xander here thinks she's more of a classic white gal."

"What?!" Tara exclaimed.

"FAITH!" Xander snorted. "That's not what I said! And that's not what the bet is, Faith! We were talking about the color of her..."

"My bet is better," Faith interrupted Xander. "We're pretty sure you can find out for us. There's fifty bucks involved."

"Five bucks, Faith."

"That's right. Five-hundred bucks!"

Tara shook her head. "You're both insane."

"Come on, admit it!" Faith grinned. "You're attracted to her!"

"I am not!" Tara crossed her arms.

"We can tell," Xander nodded. "You've been driving her very hard. I mean, twelve takes for a simple dialogue scene? That's over the top, even for you."

"Hey, I just got out of a relationship and I'm not interested in another one," Tara sighed. "Enjoying my freedom here, guys. I don't want another Angelica in my life. Now if you're excuse me, I've got severed heads to inspect..."

"No, no, no, not so fast!" Xander said. "It's worth at least thinking about it, Tare. I mean, she's pretty cute."

"And she's nothing like Angelica," Faith said. "For one, she's actually got a soul."

"Well, if you like her so much Faith, why don't you chat her up?" Tara said. "Yes, I like Willow. She's a nice girl. And she's a superb actress. Even if I was interested in her, trying to seduce the leading lady of my film wouldn't be very professional on my part, now would it?"

"Cough...PaulVerhoevenAndSharonStone...Cough," Xander sputtered.

"What's gotten into you two," Tara sighed. "I'm busy, okay? We'll talk over lunch later."

As Faith and Xander left Tara to her work, they nodded to each other. "Me thinks she doth protest too much," Faith said.

"You've got the subtlety of a police battering ram to the head, Faith," Xander rolled his eyes.

day 4

And again, Anya and Tara had a massive fight. So much that it attracted the attention of the crew, who constantly looked in their direction while trying to seem busy.

"It's insane!" Anya shouted. "We don't need to fly in Veruca right now!"

"Yes, we do!" Tara shouted back. "Veruca's our composer! Do I need to remind you how important sound is to a horror film? Veruca needs to get a feel for the story and the environment!"

"We're only doing interior shots now," Anya retorted. "She can get a taste of the environment when we're in the editing phase, Tara."

"She can go to the suburb when we're filming!" Tara protested.

"Hey, she should have been here from the start," Anya said. "It's her own fault for not being here now."

"She got mauled by a rabid dog! What was she supposed to do?" Tara said. "Dammit, she's one of us, Anya! And since she'll be here for editing anyway, why not fly her in here now?"

"Let me explain this to you one more time," Anya said. "We've got a budget for pre-production, shooting and post-production. There's no more stretch in the shooting-budget, we're very tight. If Veruca comes, we need to pay her a high salary every day, hire her a trailer, feed and clothe her, rent extra audio equipment, etcetera, etcetera. It's just not cost effective. Now, we've got plenty of stretch in the post-production budget and we won't need to rent the audio equipment because it's already been taken care off in that budget. So if..."

Tara's mind started to melt when Anya rambled on about financial statements, ledgers, sub-budgets, rent-vouchers, plane-tickets and various ways of making all these tax-deductible. Finding no counter argument, Tara had no choice but to concede.

"Alright," Tara sighed. "You win. I'll call Veruca and tell her to stay put for another couple of days. She's got the script and the storyboard. I'll have one of my assistants e-mail a couple of reference shots of the locations and the actors to her house. Maybe that'll help."

"I'm glad you see it my way, for a change," Anya smiled. "I sometimes have good ideas, you know?"

"You do realize I want to beat you over the head with that clipboard, right?"

"Yep," Anya grinned. "God, I love my job!"

---

Elanee was barely sixteen years old and an aspiring actress. Her first role for her resume was one of a nameless teenager being horribly murdered in a Tara Maclay picture. Oddly enough, that was not a bad career-move for her.

Shooting was over for this day and Xander was slowly removing Elanee's make-up. Willow, whom had had little to do in the scenes shot this evening, had been hanging out with Xander in the make-up trailer to watch him work his magic.

Elanee was a nice and chatty young girl, which was so surreal to Willow. Here Elanee was giggling and smiling and generally acting like a happy teenager... while the back of her skull had been slashed off with a garden-hoe. Her brain had been exposed, and was slowly pulsating along her heartbeat.

The entire construction had been created by Xander's magic. Xander had placed a custom made rubber mat all over her own hair and had covered it with a large wig. Xander had removed a bit of the mat and had placed a rubber blatter fitting with a tiny battery powered pump. That blatter had been covered with a thin rubber mold shaped like a brain, which had been painted to look realistic and then covered with special varnish and house-hold KY jelly(*) to give it that authentic slimy look.

It was almost a shame to remove it, but Willow guessed Elanee wouldn't want to wear this prosthetic for the rest of the week. Xander was carefully removing the rubber and avoided accidentally hurting Elanee's skin. It took two hours to reply and would take one hour to remove.

Tara stepped into the make-up trailer. "Hey, Xander," she greeted. "Oh, hi, Willow," Tara smiled gently. "Have you been enjoying yourself here?"

Willow colored slightly. "Uh, hi, Tara. It's so much fun here in the make-up trailer. Xander was just telling me about the time he almost accidentally blew up..."

"Uh, protect the innocent," Xander said.

"Xander," Tara started. "We're having a change of schedule tomorrow. Anya and I've decided that we'll be shooting Scene 42 tomorrow morning. Do we have enough blood ready?"

"Yep," Xander pointed to an industrial mixer stirring a large plastic bowl. "It's been stirring for an hour or so, and it's ready to be chilled. We've got more than enough. Two gallons worth. It's my special recipe too."

"Special recipe?" Willow asked. "Dare I ask?"

"Hey, it's 100% edible blood. Would you like a taste?"

"Uh, no," Willow blanched.

"Yep," Xander said. "Eggs, shells and all. Strawberry yogurt, cottage cheese, preferably with pineapples, corn syrup and maple syrup and a lot of squirts of red food coloring. Cooked just long enough to give it that ichor-ish look to it."

"It looks so dark red," Willow asked as she peeked into the bowl. "Is it supposed to be like that?"

Tara nodded. "Yes. Just ask Faith. If the color isn't red enough, it'll show up orange on film. So we have to make it extra red. Remember Dawn of the Dead?

"Lotsa orange blood in there," Xander said. "Great movie, shame about the blood."

"Is there orange blood in Dawn of the Dead?" Willow asked.

"I'm talking about the classic 1978 version, not the much lesser 2004 version, mind you," Tara said.

"I wouldn't know," Willow said. "I haven't seen either film."

"Uh-oh," Xander whispered.

Tara looked as if she was shell-shocked. Her mouth hung open in amazement, and she blinked... once... twice...

"Okay!" Tara finally said and hooked an arm around Willow. "Come on, Willow. To my trailer! I have to show you my favorite movie!"

"Uh, wait, what?" Willow stammered while the director dragged her out of the make-up trailer.

---

While Willow sat on the couch in Tara's trailer, Tara was fixing drinks and popcorn. The TV/DVD combo was ready for action, and the Dawn of the Dead DVD was ready to start spinning with one press of a button.

"Get ready," Tara said as she handed Willow a bucket of popcorn and a can of soda, "for one of the greatest cinematic achievements in the history of film-making."

139 minutes later, Tara started awake to the Goblin endtheme music. She groaned and rubbed her eyes. Apparently, 153 of film after a long day shooting wasn't such a hot idea. Then, Tara realized she smelled something nice. Something very nice. In fact, she was feeling rather nice too. And when she opened her eyes, Tara found out why.

139 minutes had been too much for Willow as well, for the red-head girl was now fast asleep and snuggled against Tara. Her head lay high on Tara's chest while she had an arm wrapped around Tara's waist. That nice smell came from Willow's hair.

Oh, god, this is so nice. This feels so wonderful... Tara smiled warmly, but realizing just what was going on here. No, Tara, no, don't even think about it. You're just on the rebound, girl! Oh, god, this feels nice, though.

Again, Tara shook her head. Face it, Tara. Love isn't for you. All the nice girls you fall for always turn out to be straight, and all the lesbian girls you fall for turn out to be rabid bitches. Come, on Willow's probably straight as a ruler. Don't do this to yourself, Tara.

It was then that Willow stretched, causing her to shift even closer to her. Tara felt Willow's flesh pressing against hers. She had skin so soft it could make velvet seem like sand-paper by comparison. Oh, god, this is so, so wonderful.

Willow mumbled in her sleep and started rubbing Tara's tummy ever so softly.

On her right shoulder, a miniature Tara wearing a skin-tight red devil-suit appeared, while on the other shoulder, a miniature Tara wearing a white robe and matching halo appeared.

"Come on, Tara," said angel-Tara. "Look at her. Isn't she sweet? Wouldn't you want to take her in your arms and snuggle her until there's no tomorrow? Wouldn't you want to make her yours forever?"

"Don't listen to her, Tara!" devil-Tara spat. "She said the same about Angelica!"

"Okay," angel-Tara sighed. "I was wrong that time. But I'm not this time, I swear to you. This'll be true love, girlfriend!"

"Hey, Tara, babe. Honey. Sweetheart," devil-Tara puffed on her cigar and blew a load of smoke in angel-Tara's direction. "Have I ever done you a wrong turn before? Tara, I'm just looking out for you, my precious. Do you really want to go back to the days of Angelica-horror? Do you want to be a forced vegetarian again? Do you want to see the art you make being trod upon again? Do you want to be humiliated by your own lover again and again and again? Do you want to live under Willow's thumb like you did under Angelica's? You'll really be a damn fool if you do."

"Trust you to stand in the way of true love," angel-Tara shouted. "Tara, what if this is your only chance to find true love and happiness and you let her slip through your fingers?"

"Oh, bite me, that's just the Rebound talking," devil-Tara flipped off angel-Tara. "At least I'm practical. I'm just looking out for my main woman here. Don't fall for that love crap again."

Oh, great, Tara blinked twice and the two unwelcome visitors were gone. You're talking to yourself now, Tara. Just lovely.

At that moment, Willow shifted again and mumbled in her sleep. Willow... she was so warm and soft and beautiful and kind and talented and...

ACK! No, Tara, no! Happy bachelorette! Happy bachelorette!

Tara knew she had to do something before her head would explore. Reluctantly, she disentangled herself from Willow, but simply didn't have the heart to wake her up. Besides, she wasn't sure if she could: Willow looked to be able to sleep through a hurricane at the moment.

She gently picked up Willow under the shoulders and dragged her to the bed. She propped her up and, after removing her shoes, laid the duvet over the sleeping Willow. Tara picked a pillow and a spare duvet from the closet, and prepared for a long night on the couch.

---

day 5 - morning

Suppressing yet another yawn, Tara ordered her third coffee from the machine. She had had a terrible night on the couch. It was lumpy, it was hard and she was just a bit too tall to fit between the armrests. Willow was still sleeping when she had left her, because it was still early. Many of the crew were still asleep as well.

She strolled to the director's chair, almost tripping over a power line as she stumbled. She downed her coffee and plopped down... just in time to see Xander and Faith nudging each other and skipping towards her.

"Morning, guys," Tara yawned. "Sorry. Didn't get much sleep tonight."

"Yeah," Faith winked. "We kinda figured that."

"Oh?" Tara asked. "You tell by the bags under my eyes and the smell of stale coffee on my breath?"

"Don't toy with us," Faith grinned. "Come on, settle our bet!"

"Huh?" Tara frowned. "What's going on here, guys?"

"Tara, you dog!" Xander slapped her shoulder. "You totally slept with Willow!"

"WHAT?!" Tara gasped. "That's not true!"

Faith crossed her arms. "Pull the other one, T. You went into your trailer with her and there's a rumor going around that she didn't come out last night."

"Yeah," Xander chuckled. "There's nothing as romantic as a violently bloody zombie-film! Seriously, we're happy for you, Tara."

Tara rose from her seat angrily. "Guys, you know me better than this! I am not the kind of person that plays with a girl's heart because she's on the rebound! I did not sleep with Willow last night, okay? She slept in my bed, I slept on the couch. That's why my neck's bent at a weird angle this morning."

"But..." Faith started to say.

"No buts!" Tara shout. "I don't know where this rumor came from, but I want it to stop before Willow gets wind of it. I will not have her confronted with this wicked lie! Allow me to spread another rumor, then: if I find out that anyone, and I do mean anyone, is spreading the rumor that I've slept with Willow, I will have that person fired on the spot and have security drag them from the set. And that includes the both of you as well!"

"You're not serious," Xander tried.

"You wanna find out just how serious I am?" Tara said while she rubbed her forehead and let her hands slide through her honeyblonde hair. "God, poor Willow."

Her closest friends watched her as she stormed back to the coffee machine.

"Oh, yeah," Xander smiled to Faith. "Our Tara's in love, alright."

"I just hope Tara finds out before shooting is over."

Oh - love. Tara loves Willow. Willow loves Tara. I love this story. It's great to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes into any movie, and especially horror with all the added effects! Great job on this really long update. I'm so looking forward to our girls getting together. :D

2004 Dawn of the Dead was not all that bad! But then again, I haven't watched the original. Is it really that much better?

Update soon!

I'm really enjoying the story you've got here. The behind the scenes information is great and the love story is so sweet. And omg, laughed out loud at this part.

That was hilarious. I could just see Tara looking like that. Grea job. Can't wait for the update =).

What an update. We got so much information about all the people. Thanks. That was very nice. I'm still busy with remembering who is who and what he or she is for on the set. Anya is wonderful. Good how Tara was able to manage the fight between her and Faith. The only thing I missed? More action between Willow and Tara. They were so busy interacting with other people, there was way too little time for those two. The video wasn't one of Tara's better ideas. Two and a half hours of horror after a long working day? Come on Tara, I think you had more creative date ideas before. And don't try to kid us. You are more than attracted to Willow. Go for it. She is nothing like Angelica.

Willow as a shy actress? This is really nice. Even if I don't think there will ever be an actress who is in fact shy. This feature doesn't fit into the job description. But to Willow it suits.

At least I wonder if Faith and Xander will win the bet. I would count on it. I don't think Tara will last very long with her denial.

I love your writing UO, and your latest offering continues adding to the high quality of work you’ve completed to date. I’m not as big a fan of horror movies as I am of your writing but I love movies in general so its great to read a fic that looks at the shady underbelly of movie making.

I loved how Tara was able to truly be herself after she ditched Angelica, it’s true even when you’re with people that you love you have to make sacrifices…in my case relegating my action figure collection to the study instead of the living room…although I think if my partner collected crystal dolphins they would find their way to the trashbin rather quickly no matter how much I loved her!

I love the Scooby gang as film-crew premise, it has a real family feel to it and reading about the process of making a movie is very cool. We have a lot of American movies made in New Zealand (not just Lord of the Rings!). Most recently the lesbian action flick ‘In Her Line of Fire’ with Mariel Hemingway, all the bad guys were played by New Zealanders and they were hideously bad actors with thick Kiwi accents…this highlights the dangers of casting locals!!

Then we have the introduction of Willow, and in the second chapter we have inklings of the fun to come! Some great scenes showing Tara’s struggle between her desire to remain single and her growing affection for Willow. I can’t wait to read the continuing story and see when she finally does give in and make her move…or will Willow make the move?

Thanks UO!
Cheers

Great update! Tara and Willow loving each other... if only Tara gives herself a go ahead. It's nice to see Tara so protective of Willow. And poor Will, it feels like someone really hurt her deep in the past... :sob I just hope she and Tara will get together faster so she can have nurse-Tara taking care of her...

but before that, can you get Angel-Tara transform into Amazon-Tara so she can kick Devil-Tara butt? :pray

Hee, I love Tara's little angel and devil arguing it out on her shoulders - it's a classic, but it feels so fresh to pop it into a story like this, that's otherwise so grounded in reality. I guess those late night Dawn of the Dead showings will do that to you (I'm with Tara, the remake was a pale, sorry imitation of the original).

With more references to Tara's time with her ex, the overriding sense is that Angelica regarded Tara as some kind of trophy, or accessory, and had no interest in who Tara really was. I mean sure, there's compromise in a relationship, but it just seems that Angelica expected Tara to give up everything she enjoyed - aside from how gorgeous Tara is, was she really that interested in her? Good riddance to her - but it's easy to see how that experience has made Tara very wary, and regaining her freedom so suddenly would make the prospect of another relationship quite scary. Let's hope Tara gets some solid proof that Willow's interested in her for her.

It's kind of an interesting, awkward situation in relation to that, with Tara kind of being Willow's boss so long as the shoot is happening, and Willow so nervous - I wonder how confident Tara will be that any interest Willow shows in her horror film adoration is genuine, and not just Willow being too insecure to say she's not interested? For a short story, this sure has a lot of layers to it.

Useful_Oxymoron: Great fic, I just got caught up with it, and I gotta tell you it kicks ass. I really loved the conversation that Willow had with Tara about her how her parents didn't approve of her career, and I loved the talk that Tara had with Willow about how she got started doing movies, just great. I also loved when Willow fell asleep on Tara's shoulder, the devil and angel on her shoulders was just fantastic and funny. I really hope that we get some :wtkiss real soon. I can't wait to read more.

UO,
Is Amber a horror-fan? I never knew that! Wow, I think my heart-beat just increased twofold!

Yes, it was last year at Moonlight Rising that Amber and I were talking about "Ghosts of Albion" and she mentioned that she was a complete horror geek and that working with Chris Golden had only made her love of the genre stronger.
There's nothing sexier than a woman who loves eviscerations.
You yourself know far more about the intricate behind the scenes goings-on of horror film-making than I do so :clap to you.
This is vicariously like being on set with your video diary recording all of the behind the scenes intrigue between the various depatments and how everything has to be balanced on the edge of a knife so the production will run smoothly.
Not only is Tara a visionary and dedicated director but she is a stand-up human being as well for not taking advantage of Willow when the sparkage recognition factor is initiated between them.
Loved the angel/devil conflict; interesting how they are only called upon to solve sexual dilemnas, isn't it.
"Animal House" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" coming to mind.
Tara is just being cautious and wants Willow to tell her that Tara kicks more butt than any woman she has ever known.
Willow, dealing with insecurity issues, will need reassurance from Tara that their friendship and love can flourish and grow stronger away from the movie set once they are done filming.
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.

diamondforever - I'm happy you're enjoying the story so far. The point that our girls'll be getting together is coming very closer. Tara's armor is starting to crack. :wtkiss

Oh, DotD 2004 certainly wasn't a bad movie. Not at all. It was a good survival horror/shut-in story. Shame about the running zombies, though. But, like Chris said, the original, though visually less impressive, is far superior, imho.

Update in a few seconds.

Tazraven - Glad like like the story so far. I've been trying to mix a W/T lovestory with fun facts about making movies. Heh, at long last all that time watching DVD documentaries and listening to all those commentary tracks is paying off! :D More is on the way!

Dianneswillowtree - Oh, yeah, she's falling hard. :wtkiss I simply couldn't resist passing on the angel/devil thing.

Sacinema - Heh, I originally planned to have all of priniciple photography condensed into one part... That wasn't good idea, seeing how much story is packed in updates 2 and 3. Information-density might be a bit all too high, I fear. If you want more on W/T, there's a bit of a shift of focus in part 3, where there'll be more W/T interactions and backstory.

What do you mean? Watching a horror film is one of the most romantic things you can do. ;) Darken a room, turn up the sound and curl up to your girl. If you're lucky, you might even see something of the movie. :kdevil

As for the bet, well, there's more colors than black and white. :kdevil

Alcy - Hey, Alcy! How's life in the Down Underverse? You're making me blush here, btw. Thank you for the high praise.

Shady underbelly? Yeah, you're right, Hollywood is a snake-pit. And not all directors are as friendly to their cast and crew as Tara is. Not by a long shot.

Crystal dolphins. Yes, those do tend to invite... mysterious accidents. Like mysteriously falling onto a hammer. :kdevil

A lot of cool TV and movies has been and is being created on New Zealand soil. LOTR, obviously, but also King Kong, Herc, Xena. I've always had soft spots for kiwi actors Lawrence Makore and Joel Tobeck.

I wanted to get the idea across that Tara re-uses at least the core members of her regular crew with every movie she makes to enhance the family-feel of the story.

I can’t wait to read the continuing story and see when she finally does give in and make her move…or will Willow make the move?

Maybe a little bit of both. Let's just say that hope is growing on both sides. ;)

Thanks again! Update will be posted in a few seconds.

Cynthia Taz - You're right on the bat with Will. :( More on that in part 3. This is the kittenboard, so you already know the ending of the story, basically. :) I hope I'll be able to make it interesting and romantic.

LOL! Amazon-Tara. I'm afraid devil-Tara would simply call upon her big brother Sauron to deal with Amazon-Tara. She's a bit too well connected and strong at the moment. Maybe later. ;)

Chris - The devil/angel thing was a case of couldn't resist, really. Even though the story is in a realistic setting, I can never quite entirely let go of the absurdism I love. :)

The only thing Angelica wanted her for was for prestige, her connections and her wallet. That Tara's gorgeous helped, but probably wasn't the main focus of Angelica's goals. I think that, in a way, Tara sensed that and finally had enough. Though Tara knows on some level that Willow is no Angelica, she's still wary because, well, basically Tara was betrayed by Angelica.

This story is not so short as I thought it would be when I wrote the first outlines. I probably should trim more fat, but so far it's working in my favor. Tara likes Willow because she's genuine. Willow likes Tara because she's kind and respects her as a person. It'll take some time for them realize this of each other, though.

lonewolf22 - Oh, there's definitely going to be :wtkiss but not just yet. Glad you're enjoying the story, though. Willow's parents don't seem like the type of people who would approve of an acting career.

Update in a few seconds.

Taralicious - Whoa, you met Amber? Color me jealous. And to find out she's a horror-buff... I'm falling in love all over again. :blush

Thanks for the compliment. Spending all those time with DVD commentaries and documentaries is finally paying off. It's fun imagining Tara as one of the directors from such a track. The angel/devil thing was fun to do. I love devil-Tara because of her tight-fitting red jumpsuit... and I love angel-Tara because she won't hesitate to attack her mean-spirited sister with a baseball bat if need be. ;-)

Willow, dealing with insecurity issues, will need reassurance from Tara that their friendship and love can flourish and grow stronger away from the movie set once they are done filming.

Uncanny! Have you been reading my outlines? :)

willohand - Glad to hear it! Update in a few seconds.

Hello fellow kittens. Sorry about taking so long between updates. Putting things together took longer than I expected. One more part to go!

Title - Masters of Horror

Chapter 3 - Shooting. Day 5-10

All the people directly involved in the story during the production of Tara's supposed 14th episode are fictional, per the rules of the site.

Masters of Horror : Shooting Day 5-10

Day 5 - Continued

There was a strange atmosphere on the set today. Willow couldn't quite put a finger on it, but something was off with Tara. Instead of being her jovial self, Tara had seemingly transformed into the Dark Lord Sauron, menacing down upon her subjects from the top of the Dark Tower of Barad-Dur.

Oh, Tara was nice to her. Exceedingly so, in fact, but Tara had quelled any form of chatter on the set and kept everything on a business-like level for everybody else. Willow just found it all to be rather strange, and had no idea why Tara'd treat her own people so harshly all of a sudden.

Luckily, Tara wasn't half as strict as she had been this morning, and some of the gaffers even dared to chat with each other again, albeit very quietly.

Willow smiled to herself. She didn't remember what had happened last night, but she concluded that she must have fallen asleep during the movie and Tara had put her to bed. She had even put a warm blanket over her so she wouldn't get too cold. That was so nice of Tara. Just thinking about that made it seem even more strange that Tara'd gotten all cranky all of a sudden.

Willow had shot three scenes that past hour and wouldn't be needed for another 30 minutes. It gave Willow some time to relax, practise her delivery and study the script yet again. Willow stepped into a small makeshift lounge. Most of the space in the lounge was taken up by a large settee, while the rest of the room was filled with a small table and a soda-machine. All in all, it was very sparse, but with a sixteen hour work-day and precious few scenes in which she wasn't needed today, she was glad to be able to get her feet up for a little while at least. Ten hours of shooting behind her and six more to go. It was mind boggling that the result of ten long days of almost non-stop shooting would only result in a 54 minute film.

She was pleasantly surprised to find Rene Perrin sitting on the couch. Apparently, he had had the same idea that she had. Rene and Willow had worked together earlier on a production of The Scottish Play, and both enjoyed a chance to be working together again. Willow, for one, was very happy that Rene was on the movie as well, and that the older lion had been willing to take a younger cub under his wing.

Rene had a lot more experience in working in front of the cameras and had helped Willow with a lot of the little things a newcomer wouldn't know, such as knowing where to stand, avoiding even the slightest glance to the camera and giving some tips on how to focus on the scene with intensity without it seeming over the top or bland. Facial expressions in close-ups were a lot more prevalent than on the stage, and both Tara and Rene had helped her find a good balance.

The two of them spent some time drinking coffee and practised some lines together, before they started chatting a little.

"Now Tara," Rene said. "She's a director who knows what she wants and how she wants it, yet keeps an open mind. It's a real pleasure to be working with her. Did you see how she handled Jimmy?"

"Jimmy," Willow shook her head. "He's a nice guy, but he can be such a prima donna! He always keeps saying he wants to change his lines! He's walking all over poor Tara! I'm surprised she hasn't told him off yet. She's certainly got a right to."

Rene smiled. "Ah, looks can be deceiving, Willow," he said. "Didn't you hear what Tara keeps saying?"

"But, she hardly says anything at all," Willow replied. "She just agrees and shoots the scene again with the different lines."

"Exactly!" Rene snapped his fingers. "She just shoots both and decides later which one to use. And you bet it won't be the shot with the changed line which'll end up in the final version. It's Tara's way of saying 'no way you can change this line', but also her way of putting the pin back into the grenade. If she refuses him flat out, Jimmy will fly into a tantrum and the production grinds to a halt. Tara's quite clever."

"I don't get it," Willow shook her head. "I mean, you do what you're told. Sure, you need to have some input, but the director's the boss."

"We've got our roots on the stage," Rene shrugged. "Our script is holy because we can't afford messing up in front of a live audience. Jimmy's a screen-actor... if something goes wrong or is not to the director's liking, there's always a new take until it's perfect. It's a different way of working. Different attitude too."

"Well," Willow pouted. "I still don't like Jimmy's lack of professionalism."

"It's because of Tara, isn't it?" Rene smiled.

"No, no, no. It's not because of Tara. No. No... No," Willow blushed, then took a deep breath. "Yes. Yes, it is. It is because of Tara. I mean, she's just been so nice to me. She gave me this wonderful opportunity and she's really making something worth watching here. And I don't like it that Jimmy's always second-guessing her, giving her lip and changing the script so arbitrarily. I don't like Jimmy sabotaging her efforts."

"Oh, don't worry," Rene chuckled. "Don't you worry one bit. It might not look like it, but Tara has Jimmy firmly under control. She just has to stroke his ego in the right place, and she'll be able to play him like a cheap violin. She's a sharp one, alright."

A bell ringing in the distance let them know that filming the next scene would start soon.

"That's us," Rene said. "Back to grind, Willow."

---

Willow was taking a late night stroll through the trailer village. Unlike the previous nights, this one was mild, bordering on balmy. Today had been a hard slog and most of the lights were out already. She had hoped to catch a glimpse of Tara but, much to her disappointment, she found that the lights in Tara's trailer were out. Willow stood there for a moment, undecided.

"Hey," she heard a gentle greeting. Two trailers away, Faith emerged from her own trailer. She was wearing fluffy bunny-slippers and a white robe. This was also the first time she had ever seen Faith without her cap on, revealing her lovely long brown locks to the world. Willow glanced at Tara's trailer once more, as if hoping that Tara's lights would come on and she would step outside... but the lights remained off.

"Hi, Faith," Willow said. "Isn't Tara looking at the dailies?"

Faith removed two wine coolers from a coolbox next to the door of her trailer. "Tara went to bed early today. She was really tired and will look at the dailies tomorrow before shooting."

Willow nodded. "I just wanted to know what was going on," Willow said. "Tara was so... different today."

"Tara was on the verge of exploding," Faith chuckled. "I suppose that isn't funny, though. Look, Will, you didn't get this from me, right?" she said while putting a hand on Willow's shoulder. "Last night, you and Tara went to her trailer to watch Dawn of the Dead... but nobody saw you come out of the trailer."

"I fell asleep," Willow said. "Tara must have put me in her bed."

"A few of the crew, including yours truly, jumped to conclusions. There was a rumor floating around that you and Tara slept together last night."

Willow gasped. "But... that's not true!"

"Hey," Faith said, "Tara's a known lesbian and you're a very beautiful woman. You do the math."

"So that's why Tara was so, well, harsh today."

"Yeah," Faith smirked. "She does that more often if she wants to get a point across. Everybody's got the message, that's for sure."

"Faith..." sounded a sleepy, yet husky voice from the trailer. "Come back to bed, honey."

Willow noticed for the first time that the windows of the trailer were slightly fogged up. She also recognized the voice. "Hey, is that Buffy?"

"Yep," Faith grinned. "Buffy Summers-Lehane. We've been married for three years now. In exactly 2 minutes, it'll be our wedding anniversary."

"Congratulations," Willow said sincerely. "Did you guys meet on the set?"

"Yep," Faith smiled. "I knew she was gay even before she knew herself. But Faithy can be patient. I waited and I was there for her when the inevitable coming out came along."

"Faith..." Buffy called again. "I need my honey..."

"I wonder if Tara knows you're gay yet," Faith said. "She always did have terrible Gaydar."

"Why would Tara want to know if I'm ga... Oh," Willow blushed. "Oh, no, I couldn't! I mean, I would like to get to know her better, but not while we're shooting. It... just wouldn't be right."

"Maybe not," Faith grinned. "But it'd be fun. Gotta run, Will. It's my anniversary!"

That said, Faith rushed back into the trailer winecoolers in hand, closing the door behind her. Willow turned back to Tara's trailer and watched it for a moment. Yes, Faith did have a point. She'd liked Tara from the moment she'd met her and to say that there was little attraction towards her would be an understatement. Tara treated her with respect and valued her as a person... plus, she was gorgeous, confident and funny. It's be so nice to hit the town with her. Dinner, dancing... The image of Tara, tilting her head slightly and leaning in for a kiss...

The sound of a thud behind her broke her reverie. After turning around to face Faith's trailer, she saw a hand pressed against the fogged up window, now slowly sliding down the glass.

She blushed slightly, both from the wake of her own fantasy as well as being witness of a very private moment between Buffy and Faith, and decided to quickly make her way to her own trailer. But not before Willow herself realized just how tired she was.

Day 6

The bulk of today's filming was focused on the garden chase scene. In the scene, Rosemary would be chased through a number of backyards while trying to get away from Bruce, who was chasing her with a rather sharp pair of hedge-trimmers in hand. She'd have to jump through about nine backyards in a row, jumping, climbing, tripping and falling as she went with Bruce hot in her tracks.

An added complication was that Tara, in her infinite wisdom, had decided she wanted pouring rain during this scene. So, a large rain simulator had been constructed above the already huge set and pumps were constantly creating a downpour. Also the scene would take place at night, and thus the lights were dimmed for the duration of the shoot.

All in all, it was a long, damp, cold, dark day.

For Willow, it meant being drenched to the bone for hours on end. Even though Willow and Jimmy were willing to do the climbing, falling and jumping, the insurance wouldn't allow it, meaning that Dawn would step in for those scenes and Jimmy's double would do the same. Of course, this complicated the shoot significantly, causing a seemingly endless number of small, separate multi-angled shots.

Whenever Tara stepped onto the set to give instructions, there was a certain resentment from Dawn, Jimmy and even Willow, because Tara was wearing a nice pair of Wellingtons and a huge umbrella and eventually she'd return to her nice warm and foremost dry director's chair.

After seeming hours upon hours of shooting under those conditions, Tara finally gave the long await 'It's a wrap! Thanks, everyone!'. A drenched Willow made her way back to her trailer, leaving a trail of wet footprints behind her. She tossed off her clothes and ran into the shower, turning up the heat full blast. After regaining some warmth, she returned to the living space of her trailer and put on a long pair of trailers and a thick turtleneck.

While she was brushing her long red hair, there was a knock on her door. To her surprise, she found Tara standing in front of the door, holding a mug of hot chocolate.

"A peace-offering of a warm drink," Tara smiled.

Willow invited her in, and gently took a few sips from the mug.

"Thanks," Willow said. "I think I'm finally getting my core temperature back."

"Still having fun?" Tara smiled. "For what it's worth, but I just watched the dailies. It's going to be a spectacular scene after post-production's been done."

"You know, I never liked Horror before I got started on this project, but I'm quickly changing my mind about that. I'm having great fun here. Uh, well, not so much today, really, but... Horror's dealing with many raw emotions and exploring with character put in unusual situations. It's hard work for an actor, but it's great fun."

"Ah," Tara's eyes lit up after hearing this. "A convert!"

Willow giggled for a moment. "I'm not buying the Elm Street boxed set just yet, Tara, but I'm warming up to horror. I watched some of your films to prepare for the role after I'd been cast. I really liked The Veil."

"The Veil is still my favorite," Tara smiled to herself. "It took me a long time to get things organized. I wanted to do the script I wrote justice, so I really wanted to make a deal with the studio that would give me the biggest budget and the most creative freedom. And that's no mean feat in Hollywood. We ended up with a wonderful movie, though."

"I heard it was autobiographical," Willow asked. "Is this true?"

Tara sat down and thought to herself for a moment. For a minute, she seemed very distant, as if her mind was miles away. "Yes," she finally said. "I was in a coma for four months a few years back."

"Was it a car accident, like Rebecca had in the movie?"

"No," Tara said. "I was shot."

"Oh, my god!" Willow said aghast and sat down right next to Tara, taking her hand. She lay her other hand on Tara's shoulder and squeezed slightly. "How did it happen? Were you mugged? How could anyone mug you, you're such a nice person!"

Tara closed her eyes for a moment and tilted her head slightly to rug her cheek against the soft skin of Willow's hand. "No," she said. "It was an accident on the set. I was doing pick-ups for Mazes and Trolls and I pulled a Brandon Lee."

"A Brandon Lee?"

"Yeah," Tara chuckled. "I can laugh about it now, I suppose. Someone mixed up the blanks with real bullets and when the scene was shot, the gun was fired and I was right in the path of the bullet. The bullet hit me in the side of the head, and got lodged in the side of my skull. Jeffrey Combs was damn lucky that extra was such a lousy shot. I was not so lucky..."

"Oh, my god, that's awful!" Willow gasped.

"Not as awful as what happened afterwards," Tara shook her head. "I don't know how, but I was fully aware of everything what was happening around me. I don't know if it was just synapses firing around the lead of the bullet, but... it was as if my vision was on fire. I heard and saw everything. And I spent the next four months in a hospital."

"I can't imagine how terrible it must be to wake up with four months of your life missing," Willow said.

"If only I would have been asleep, Willow," Tara sighed. "If only. The doctors said I was in a deep coma. But I could hear, I could see, I could think... but I couldn't move. Not at all. Not even my eye-lids. I just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Fully aware. Imagine being a prisoner of your own body. That can really sap at your sanity, Willow. In my mind, I got better, I went home. I met women and I fell in love. I even wrote whole scripts, but every single time, I'd awake in that hospital bed again, starting at the ceiling. And then it would start all over again. I'd go home, go on with my life... and end up motionless in that bed again. Over and over and over again. Every time I ended up back in that bed, I wanted to scream, I wanted to cry, but I couldn't even do that. You really start to lose your grip of reality in the end."

"Oh, Tara," Willow's eyes were full of concern and of compassion. Tara smiled when she kept lightly rubbing Willow's hand, which she was still holding.

"You know what my worst fear is?" Tara kept her eyes downcast. "That I'm still in that bed. That all of this is just a lie invented by my own trapped, insane mind. That I never got out of that coma and I never will."

"Rebecca's walking through the hospital, which got more and more hellish as the movie progressed," Willow said. "And then the demons and angels swooping in to seduce her. Did that happen to you too?"

"No," Tara shook her head. "That was a plotline I made up later, and nothing that ever happened to me. But strange things happen to you when you're at the edge of death. It's as if you're standing a platform looking down into a bottom-less pit and there's no place to go but down. That's the feeling I wanted to convey in 'The Veil'. I kept very tight reigns on every aspect of the film, because I had a certain vision about it that I could never explain to anyone else while we're filming. Luckily, the crew trusted me. I especially left the ending ambiguous. It seemed in the end, that Rebecca was released from the hospital and went home, but in the reality of the film, she never woke up."

"That's crazy," Willow said. "The worst kind of horror is the kind that can happen to anybody at any time with elements of normal everyday things."

"That's the whole point of horror," Tara half-smiled. "In the end, you'll never know if you're neighbor is an axe-wielding psychopath, or if you're house is built on top of an Indian burial ground."

"Or if there's a gateway to Hell in your backyard," Willow giggled. "Or, horrors upon horrors, a rain-machine above your backyard."

Tara smiled warmly and gently pushed a rebellious red lock of hair from Willow's cheek, stealing a moment to caress her soft skin. "I hope you're real, Willow," Tara whispered. "I really do."

"I was real the last time I looked," Willow chuckled.

Together, they sat for a moment, in silent awkwardness.

Day 7

On day seven, after working almost around the clock for weeks, Buffy and her crew finished the cellar sets. The two cellars, of both killers Bruce and Andy, were lovingly and morbidly created with a true sense of detail. There were the lairs of two very evil people, and had a dank and oppressive atmosphere to it. Especially Bruce's basement, which would be shot first, looked like a madman's paradise. A gruesome workbench was in the middle of the room, with blood encrusted tools lying around it. In several bloody storage compartments, there was the harvest of Bruce's previous kills. Bodyparts, both new and decaying, had been lovingly created from a secret rubber-mixture and treated by Xander and his crew and had been strew haphazardly on the concrete floor of the basement. In the corner was the place where the victims awaiting their 'treatment' would be kept.

Right now, Willow was in the middle of a scene, shackled in chains with Jimmy in full Bruce-mode menacing over her.

"So," Bruce laughed maniacally while waving a sharp combat knife before a struggling Rosemary's eyes. "That's why the little girl ran. You were so annoying that your boyfriend kept knocking you across the room," Bruce's grin was so large it seemed not quite human. "So, little girl, did you ever thought about fighting back? No, you didn't. Because you're such a weak little coward. You ran... well, everybody can run. It takes guts to fight back," he grinned while scraping the blade of the knife across Rosemary's cheek while she shivered and sobbed. "And guts is something you don't have... Well, not for much longer anyway," he said, laughing about his own joke. "I'm gonna carve you up real nice..."

"Alright," Tara called from the director's chair while keeping an eye on the monitor since the camera was in extreme close-up. "Take it from the top. One more luck. We're still rolling people."

And so Jimmy started his line again. "So," he said. "That's why the little girl ran..."

But Willow couldn't hear the words anymore. She broke out in a cold sweat and everything she saw was out of focus. The walls started coming towards her more and more and more. And then there was that terrible memory... the person she loved standing over her fallen body, fist still balled and getting ready to hit her again if necessary...

"NO!" Willow screamed. She had to get out of there. She pulled and yanked on the chains which kept her in place. It took her a few moments to remember how to activate the safeties, but as soon as she did, the shackles clicked open and she bolted from the set.

She didn't know how she ended up sitting in the actor's lounge, but she did. She hugged her legs and cried softly.

"Hey," sounded the gentle voice of Tara. "Are you okay, Willow?"

"I'm s-sorry," Willow sniffed. "I'm so sorry I messed up the scene. I... I just had to get out of there."

"It's okay," Tara said gently as she sat down next to Willow and gently wrapped an arm around her shoulders, allowing Willow to lean into her. "I'm the one that's sorry. I pushed you too hard."

"It just... hit a little close to home, that's all," Willow sniffed. "I'm sorry, I'll just go and see Xander to fix up my make-up and then we can go on."

"We'll take a break," Tara said. "It's okay, don't worry about it. Do you want to talk about it?"

"With you," Willow sniffed again. "Only with you."

"Did... someone you loved hit you, Willow?"

"Yeah," Willow said. "I mean, when we met, Harriet was such a nice person. I mean, she could be impulsive and have a very nasty temper and... well, in retrospect, that should have been my first clue."

"Wait," Tara said. "Did you say 'Harriet'?"

"Yes," Willow looked at her quizically. "Harriet is my ex-girlfriend."

Tara blinked. It took her a few moments to wrap her head around two essential bits of information. First of all, Willow was gay. Secondly, she was single and thus, on the market. Third of all, Willow wasn't straight. In fact, she was gay. G... A...Y... Gay. Homosexual. Of the sapphic persuasion. Into girls. How the hell could she have missed this?!

Immediately, Tara pushed those feelings away. Professionalism aside, Willow was bearing her soul to Tara and it simply wouldn't be appropriate to flirt with her at this moment.

"Go on," Tara said.

"She was an artist," Willow smiled for a moment. "I met her when had just dropped out of college. She was moonlighting as a backdrop painter for one of the plays I acted in. We hit it off immediately and started dating. You know how it goes, we moved in together... two starving artists together. Guess what, turned out love really wasn't enough."

Willow looked away. "I don't remember when she started hitting me, or why. She... had a bit of a hole in her hand. She spent way too much money and we almost lost our house when we couldn't bring up the rent. She kept painting, while I got some other jobs besides my acting to cover our debts. In the end, it was just her and her muse. God, she was so obsessive. She yelled at me, she pushed me around... and she hit me. At first I thought it was all my fault. That somehow I made her so mad that she felt the need to hit me. That's so cliche, isn't it?"

"Oh, Willow," Tara said and took her into a gentle embrace. "I've got half a mind to look her up and have some words with her," she whispered. Willow could in her eyes that Tara would do more than just talk with her if she'd ever meet Harriet.

"I told my fellow actors that I'd fallen down the stairs whenever I had a big welt or something," Willow sniffed. "I don't think they believed me. I might be a klutz, but falling down the stairs four times a week... Finally I had enough. I told her to leave. I think she knew I was serious. When I got home from the play that same day, she was gone and had taken all her stuff. And that was that. I never saw hide nor hair of her again. It's bitter, but I think it was for the best."

"Believe me, I know how you feel," Tara offered a half-smile. "Angelica wasn't exactly un-abusive either."

"You?" Willow said. "But, you're so... strong and confident. And..."

Tara chuckled. "Angelica knew just how to push my buttons. She didn't hit me. Heh, I would have wiped the floor with her if she did. But hers was a more psychological sort of abuse. She could play me like a cheap violin. She constantly talked down on me, she marginalized my accomplishments, looked down on my movies and spent way too much of my money. To her, I was more of a trophy, a crutch to get higher-up in Hollywood. Oh, and a money-tree, let's not forget about that. My friends and family weren't good enough for her. Like you, I had enough. I love horror too much to give it up, and she had insulted my dad one to many times. I told her in no uncertain terms that wouldn't let her have her way anymore. And she exploded."

"What a bitch!" Willow said. "Why'd you let her walk all over you? For two years, no less!"

"Why did you let Harriet get away with hitting you?" Tara asked gently. "Not because of love."

Willow looked away. "No," she whispered.

"Same like me, then," Tara sighed. "Fear. I didn't want to be alone. Until one day you realize that you're better off being alone."

"Romance sucks," Willow pouted.

"It does," Tara sighed. "It really, really does."

"I'm gonna be a happy bachelorette for many, many years," Willow said resolutely, resolve-face firmly in place.

"Ditto!" Tara smiled... while both women were still firmly holding hands.

"The worst is," Willow said, "that she made me bring my cat to the pound. She was allergic. I had Tom for eight years. The last thing I had of my childhood. If there's one thing in my life I regret, it's that."

Willow took a few breaths. "Can we do the scene again?" Willow asked.

"Are you sure?"

"I... think I need to do this."

"Okay," Tara took her hand and together, they walked back to the set, where Jimmy immediately embraced Willow and apologized profusely for whatever it was that he might have done. Willow returned the embrace and laughed gently.

The third take ended up being the best of them all.

---

That evening, when everybody was clearing out, Faith, Xander and Tara were in the middle of the studio, at the edge of the basement sets, chatting quietly.

"Willow's gay," Tara blinked as if she could scarcely believe it herself. "She's actually gay..."

"Well, duh," Faith snorted. "How the hell could you not know? Even Xander has a better Gaydar than you do."

"Some men have a good eye for lesbians, trust me about that," Xander chuckled. "Guess Cordelia owes me ten bucks now."

"So, gonna do something about it, Tara?" Faith chuckled. "She is darn cute, isn't she? I wonder if she's a good kisser."

Tara ignored Faith's not-so-gentle tease and accompanied nudge. She leaned back in her chair and ran her hands through her hair for a moment. After letting out a deep sigh, she turned to her friends.

"Look, it's just not very professional..."

"Oh, god, here we go," Faith stamped her foot. "Hi, I'm Tara. I'd really like to kiss you, but it's not professional, so I'm just going to my trailer to watch some scream-queen movies instead. Would that be alright? I'm gonna a die a lonely old spinster with fifteen cats, no sex and no life."

"Faith, please..."

"Look, Tara," Xander broke in. "Don't tell me you don't like her. And don't tell me you're very pleased that Willow is gay."

"It does... put new light on the situation, but come on, guys! You were so happy for me when I broke up with Angelica! Oh, you're free again, Tara. You can enjoy life again."

"I'm sure you can enjoy endless vicarious smoochies with the lovely Willow," Xander said. "We're just looking out for your best interest and happiness, Tara."

"Yes," Faith added. "That and your libido."

Tara looked away. "She's an actress. Angelica was an actress."

"Oh, now you're just making excuses," Faith said angrily. "I'm not getting any 'hotter thus better than thou'-vibes from Willow. She's genuine, Tara, not another Angelica. And if I'd been single, I'd be putting the moves on her right now!"

Tara sighed. "I don't know... I didn't think Angelica was an Angelica either when I first met her!"

Faith bristled and pulled her cap down. "That's it, I give up. I'm not going to stand here listening to the excuses of a yellow chicken. I'm going back to my trailer have stupendous sex with my wife... Better way to spend my time."

That said, Faith stomped off, leaving Xander and Tara to watch her step out of the studio towards the trailers.

"Am I being a yellow chicken, Xander?" Tara asked.

"Cluck, cluck, cluck," Xander replied with a smirk.

"Et tu, Xander?" Tara sighed. "Maybe I'm just being too stubborn."

"Yes."

"You're not helping here, Xander."

"No."

"Yes."

"No. Uh... Wait, was that a trick question?"

Day 8

Tara, who was supposedly trying to oversee the camera set-up for the next scene, found her mind drifting to Willow. Tara looked over her shoulders, and from the corner of her eyes, saw her passing the time by cheerfully monkeying around with Rene, Faith and Xander.

Yeah Tara told herself. I am very, very attracted to her...

But Tara wondered what she would be getting into. She just got out of one relationship... was she ready to give up her newfound freedom? Maybe it wouldn't even work out, who knows? Why take the trouble?

Tara thought for a moment. Tara + Willow = Happiness? Or Tara + Willow = Happiness, then inevitable heartbreak. Oh, for god's sake, Tara. You've only known her for scarcely eight days and you're already thinking of moving in with her?! God, what a mess...

"HEY!" sounded Faith. "Are you even listening to me, or am I talking to myself here?"

Tara blinked. "Sorry? What?"

Faith chuckled. "I think there's no room in your mind for lens-configurations when all your runtime is devoted to a certain red-head."

Tara sank into the nearest seat. "I really need to focus myself here."

"Shall I get us some coffee?" Faith asked. "You look like you can use it."

And so Tara was left staring at the sets... and Willow cheerfully chatting with Xander. She let out a deep sigh.

Why do I love Horror? Tara asked herself. The answer was more than just 'because it's fun'. It was fun, because of the crew and actors working together to make a best possible film. A lot of people in the industry got their start in the horror-genre, so ego wasn't all that much of an issue. No, mostly it was because the people working on horror productions had embraced their fears and accepted them. And they lived happier lives as a result.

Or, at least, that was what John Carpenter had told her. Of course, they had been passing the blunt at the time.

So why am I afraid, Tara thought resolutely. This is ridiculous! I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna walk over there and ask Willow for a date right now!

Tara stood up, tugged her shirt down, and got ready to stride over to Willow to...

"Ahum," sounded behind her.

"Oh, hello, Anya," Tara said sheepishly. "Sorry, I didn't see you there."

"No," Anya said, rather harshly. "You only have eye for the red-head over there. And that's what I wanted to talk to you about."

"Oh?" Tara raised an eyebrow.

"Look, Tara," Anya said. "You have to be pretty blind to miss that you wanna get inside Willow's panties at your earliest convenience."

Anya continued her speech while Tara stared at her in stunned silence.

"Oh, who are you trying to fool here?" Anya rolled her eyes. "Look, I've know you for years, Tara, and I hated Angelica as much as I hate the rats in my basement. I'm happy that you've found someone for in love with, I really am... but my first concern here is the movie we're making. And it should be yours too!"

"But..."

"Let me finish," Anya said. "I know tweedle-dumb and tweedle-dumber are trying to fix you up, but both you and Willow are integral to this movie. We're running a multi-million dollar production here and we simply can't risk any personal problems between the two of you causing trouble for us. Again, I don't care what you do with Willow. You can lick her all night long as far as I care... but only after principal photography has ended!"

Tara could only nod. Anya had been harsh, but honest... and the worst thing was that she was right.

Anya took Tara's sigh as an acceptance. "Two more days, Tara," she said, more gently this time. "Just wait two more days."

Anya walked off to balance some books and almost bumped into Faith.

"Sheesh," Faith said while she handed Tara a cup of brown-colored tasteless slop. "What was that all about?"

"Nothing," Tara replied softly. "Take me through the camera setup again, Faith."

Day 9

Day nine went mostly without incident. Willow spent some time watching Dawn doing what was dubbed as the chainsaw stunt. Andy would basically try to saw Rosemary in half, and Rosemary, in a desperate move, would grab a metal pipe to try to block the blade, before kicking Andy against the knee and running up the stairs to the basement.

Of course, Willow wouldn't be used for any of those shots. That honor was bestowed on Dawn. And as she watched Dawn lying on her back, thrashing about while the sparks flew off the reinforced metal pipe while the working chainsaw was inches from her face, she did not envy her at all.

Still, she was having a lot of fun today. The only odd thing was that Tara had become somewhat distant. She hadn't stopped to chat with her today. Maybe she was reading too much into it, and maybe Tara was just busy. Between every single shot, Tara had been on the phone almost constantly, so she guessed it might have something to do with the production.

She could only hope tomorrow would be different.

Day 10

Today would be the shortest day. All that was left to shoot were a few small scenes to fill in the gaps. Still, that was no reason to Tara to lose her focus. The last scene to be filmed, ironically, was something that would be in the very beginning of the film. It was a scene of Rosemary in the living room her new home. There was no dialogue, but she simply stood there, looking rather lost. Rosemary was in a strange environment, all her belonging are still in boxes and Rosemary had no idea which box to open first or where to start decorating her new home.

The quality of this scene depended entirely on Willow conveying these emotions purely through facial expressions and body language. And again she pulled it off masterfully.

"Alright," Tara said at the end of the shot. "CUT! That's it people. Our movie's in the can. Thank you. Thank all of you!"

A chorus of cheers and applause sounded from cast and crew.

"And," Tara said. "An applause for Willow Rosenberg. A very talented actress who we'll certainly be seeing a lot more!"

Willow blushed as red as her hair when the chorus of applause broke out a second time.

"Now, we're got one hell of a..." Tara started to say, when she suddenly noticed someone sneaking up to her. Too late she realized this, and before she knew it, several gallons of sweetly smelling fake blood was poured all over her.

Tara let out a shriek and then a laugh, while the gathered crew broke out in a collective belly-laugh. Faith and Xander, both holding one handle of a pail which up to a few seconds hold held fake movie-blood.

"We gotta change your name to Carrie Maclay now, Tara," Faith giggled.

"Ah, you bitches!" Tara giggled while she rubbed the sticky fake blood from her face. "I was gonna invite you all to one hell of a wrap-up party, but now you can forget it!"

And so the wrap-up party started. The caterers had been setting up at a closed up part of the studio, while some of the audio-crew had taken some time to set up the sound equipment for the music. But, for obvious reasons, Tara saw the need to go to her trailer to take a shower first.

She had just dried her hair somewhat and had dressed to a t-shirt and slacks when there was a knock on the door.

"Faith said you wanted to see me?" Willow asked.

"Yeah," Tara said. "Sorry. I showered for half an hour and I'm still sticky."

"You look fine," Willow smiled.

"Just don't get too close, or you'll get permanently attached," Tara said. Not that I'd mind all that much.

"So, it's really over, isn't it?" Willow pouted. "I had so much fun. I'm going to miss everyone."

"It's not all over," Tara said. "There's still ADR and pick-ups, so we'll still be seeing a bit more of each other. But that's not why I asked you to come here. I have a little present for you I wanted to give you to thank you for your dedication to our movie."

"Oh, that's not necessary," Willow blushed. "I mean, it's my job and... I did it for you..."

Tara smiled. "That's why it's necessary," she said and took a plastic pet carrier from underneath the table. Willow frowned at this, and Tara urged her to open the box. And when she did, Willow let out a gasp.

"Tom," Willow whispered. The grey tabby cat recognized Willow as well and jumped into her arms.

"Yeah," Tara smiled while Willow hugged her beloved pet. "I had an assistant make a call to the pound and they told me who had adopted Tom. I explained the situation to the nice elderly couple and they were only too happy to return him to you."

Actually, Tara thought. I had to bribe the receptionist with two tickets to horror-con and the 'nice' elderly couple jacked up the price again and again as soon as they found out that the cat had worth to Tara. She'd spent a lot of time on the phone yesterday to negotiate a price. In the end, Tom had cost her an arm and a leg, but the brilliant smile on Willow's face was worth every penny.

Willow gently put Tom back in the pet carrier and then gently flowed into Tara's arms, embracing her softly.

Tara's heart almost gave out. The scent of Willow's hair, the softness of her skin, the rise and fall of her chest with every breath.

Two unwanted guests once again appeared on her shoulder.

"Come on!" said Angel-Tara. "Kiss her! You know you want to!"

"Oh, please, scoffed Devil-Tara. "Come on, Tar. Two chicks that are both on the rebound, how long do you think that'll last? And do you really wanna give up your freedom? Is it sex? Is that it? Tara, just go to the nearest lesbian bar. There isn't a lesbian in the world who wouldn't want to have you in her bed for a night. You don't need Willow!"

"Tara!" Angel-Tara shouted. "You wouldn't go through all this trouble if you didn't think you could love her. You'd already decided to ask her for a date and now you can. Come on, look at her, she's ready to kiss you. Go for it!"

"Yeah, go for it, Devil-Tara snorted. "By all means. And think of me when you're under her thumb. Think of me when she'll ask you to give up what you love to do. Think of me when she starts cheating on you and assume you don't know. Think of me when you still try to save what's left of a relationship that was never one of love. Then you'll think of me and weep! It's happened before, Tara! It's happened before!"

"I... I... I..."

Willow looked Tara in the eye and gently kissed her on the cheek. "Thank you," she said when she took her cat. "Thank you so much..."

"Why don't you leave Tom here for a while, okay?" Tara asked. "Go and enjoy the party."

Willow thanked Tara one more time, and, while never looking away from Tara until the very last moment, Willow left the trailer.

Tara sighed deeply and picked up Tom from the pet carrier. "Okay, Tom, will you go out with me?"

"Miao!"

"See, you moron?" Tara told herself. "Was it really that hard?"
