A friend of mine (a very insistent friend) made me try out Firefox a while back. I loved it. I haven't used anything else since. There are so many extensions and themes, you can get it to do pretty much anything you can think of.

I'm looking forward to Firefox 2. It has some great new features like built in spell checker and undo closed tab and session restore. The first beta just came out a few days ago, it's looking very good so far.

well, Aaron, I'll never switch from Firefox, but I'm gettg a little tired of my browser freezing &/or crashing in the middle of something!! Yes, I have the "crash: save your stuff" extension that (I think) you recommended.

I had/have 1.5.0.4... now I'll have 1.5.0.6

but I'll still be happy... and happier than I'd be without it. :grin

I'm having the same problem. And it has started recently. But I haven't found the cause it. I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro because I bought a bigger and faster hard drive for my laptop and installed a clean version of Firefox and right off the bat, it froze and gave me a error box. Weird. But in the last 6 hours, it's been pretty good. Weird. I hope 2.0 comes out soon. The beta is not so fun being that there are only a few extensions available. =)

I use http://www.mrtech.com/extensions/local_install/ that extension to make my old extensions compatible! Hee. I haven't had a problem yet.

I got Firefox not ten minutes ago and already I'm in love.

So apparently there is a Firefox extension that you can install that lets you run IE in a tab of FF, thus not having to open IE at all if there is a reason you need to use it. (I need IE because there's a software package that has an HTML editor that is only supported in IE and it doesn't display in FF.)

I did a little searching and found this extension. Has anyone used it or a similar extension to run IE in FF?

Ok I too think fiefox is great I have been using for a while, also after some much pestering from a friend who knows way more than me about computer security actually computers in general.

I have a couple of questions though. I have only jsut started using the multi-tabed screen to save having so many windows open. I am looking for a quick way to flick between the different tabs. I alwsays used to use Alt + Tab to flick between open windows.

Also 'authorised' pop-up only appear in the one screen it is related to, ie you have a PM. If I am off playing in another screen, err window, err tab, I don't know what to call it I don't know I have a PM withour coming back to the board.

Am I just being dim and missing a really simple option.

From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

Firefox 2.0 debuts Tuesday

Saturday, October 21, 2006

By DAN RICHMAN
P-I REPORTER

Firefox 2.0, the foremost rival to Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser, is set for release Tuesday afternoon, said its producer, the not-for-profit Mozilla Corp.

The free 5-megabyte browser, available in 39 languages for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, will be downloadable from getfirefox.com, the Mountain View, Calif., company said.

The new release of the two-year-old product includes new features but strives to retain its simplicity of design and operation, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, said earlier this week.

It incorporates anti-phishing technology to prevent the deceptive disclosure of personal information. It restores windows, tabs, in-progress downloads and text typed into online forms if any of those are interrupted by a system crash. And it corrects the spelling of words entered on Web pages.

Version 2.0 also improves on the tabbed-windows interface that Mozilla innovated and that Microsoft introduced for the first time last week with IE7, its biggest upgrade since 2001.

Analysts said IE7 is a significant improvement over its predecessor, but the big question is whether it will stem Firefox's growth at Microsoft's expense. Firefox's share of the browser market has grown to 9.8 percent of the U.S. market this month, from 2.9 percent in October 2004.

Mozilla oversees the creation and maintenance of computer programs by volunteer developers, known as open-source software.

In contrast, most software companies, including Microsoft, rely exclusively on in-house programmers. Microsoft long opposed the open-source movement, an attitude that has attracted the company's detractors to Firefox.

So far, so good.

I just downloaded and installed Firefox 2.0. Everything seems to have updated okay (I was using 1.5.0.7) in that my bookmarks and preferences are all still working. However, I used to have a button on my toolbar for reading email that would start up Thunderbird when I hit that button. It seems to have disappeared and I can't find anything in options or help.

I can still start Thunderbird from my desktop, but it was more convenient having it on the Firefox toolbar.

Does anyone know if that functionality still exists and if so, where? Thanks,

Mems

Hey, Mems. Looks like that was removed for Firefox 2, but there's an add-on called Get Mail that's supposed to restore the mail button. (I don't use Thunderbird anymore, so I don't know how well it works.) Check out the MozillaZine Forums. There's about a quintillion tons of info there about Firefox and Thunderbird and you'll find that several people have posted about the same issue you're having.

I was there in the first place because when I got Firefox 2, I lost QuickNote. Everything else was fine, yay, but QuickNote was gone and I had a lot of stuff in there I really wanted to keep handy. I finally found my QuickNote files on my computer, so the content of the notes themselves is not lost, but there's still no actual QuickNote for Firefox 2. I saw several threads from people asking about a good notes thingy and there were a lot of recommendations. I also saw that there's some tweaking thing I could do to make Firefox ignore the fact that QuickNote isn't compatible with version 2, but I am reluctant to do that stuff since I didn't really understand it and some of the recommended notes thingies sounded better than QuickNote actually.

Before I tried any of them, I wanted to ask here first if any of you are using a notes thingy with Firefox 2 and which one you recommend.

Also, Gmail has some new features and I'm suddenly encountering a problem with one of them now that I have Firefox 2. The "Reply on top" Gmail feature is giving me unresponsive script errors and using 98-99% of my CPU. I did some reading about that and changed my dom.max_script_run_time thingy from 10 to 20, which didn't help. Then I upped it to 40 and that didn't help, either. It only happens when I choose the drop-down Reply in Gmail, not when I click on the Reply button at the bottom. I am reading about folks having this unresponsive script problem at other sites and I'm wondering if any of you have experienced it and been able to fix it.

Thanks maudmac. The GetMail extension was just what I was looking for. I noticed a few complaints about lack of information on this in the forums. Seems to be due to issues with Windows. Whatever, I've got things back the way I want them.

maudmac, sorry that I've been AWOL & didn't see your post....

re: gmail compatability... I'm so used to the old way of replying in gmail, that I've not used the reply button so I just tried it. No problem, but then someone at google would have noticed it (or someone else told them) and they may have fixed the problem since the time you posted.

I've noticed that although Firefox 2 isn't crashing as much as my previous version (1.0.7?) it has crashed a couple of times... and there's a nifty "restore session or new session" buttons choice in a pop up screen that didn't exist in Firefox 1.0.? that I'm happy about.

I don't use Thunderbird, just web based email so I don't know about those issues.

I do use Portable Sunbird (on a SanDisc flash) & I love that!! You can use it as an electronic calendar & it's fine for that... you can program alerts & alarms, but I just use a monthly calendar setup... no alerts or alarms. I just have to remember to "close window" instead of just shutting down the program via the X button ... just something to get used to doing. But I do like it for a general calendar program... don't need anything fancier.
