Chapter One

Buffy Summers loved the smell of the air following a storm, the clean cool air; everything felt so calm and peaceful. It had been raining pretty hard and there were little puddles of rain everywhere, this was the best time to get out of the house. Dawn was helping Willow with settling in, now that she and the wiccan had patched up their friendship.

It was nice to have Willow back, she was pretty nervous about using magic following her brush with the darkness a few months ago. Willow still seemed pretty distant though, lost in sadness over the death of her girlfriend Tara.

Buffy too missed the shy blonde wiccan, Dawn too possibly even more so as she was the one that found Tara’s body in the house. Willow of course felt the loss badly; Tara was her soulmate, her one true love. Willow was devastated at losing her, the rage and grief she suffered nearly ended the world, it cost Warren and Rack their lives.

Willow had paid dearly though, loss of her innocence, she had spent three months in England recovering from her abuse of the dark magic. Buffy missed the old fun Willow she loved since moving to Sunnydale many years ago. She hoped in time that that same Willow would come back to them, and her family could be made whole again. Although without her mom and Tara it never could really.

The storm had been pretty spectacular with an incredible display of lightning like nothing they had ever seen before. There were reports of several strikes in the town center and a few near the UCL Sunnydale campus. Buffy had decided to go for a walk and maybe check them out just for interest; at least this was just a display of nature and not some demon attack.

Buffy reached the main high street, she could see that pretty much everything was as normal; people were busy shopping and enjoying the cool morning air. She paused at the ruins of the old magic shop that Willow had destroyed several months ago.

“That’s some mess you made Willow.” Buffy said to herself.

She started to turn to walk away when she felt someone behind her, it was probably someone who had come to buy something but had just seen the danger signs outside the building.

“Um excuse me sorry to bother you, d d do you know if there is another magic shop near here.” A girl’s voice said.

Buffy froze in shock as she had heard that voice before, a soft voice, sweet and gentle. A voice from the past a ghost even. She turned around to see a blonde girl standing there, her soft blue eyes looking at her. Buffy shook her head and looked again, she stared open mouthed at her for a moment.

“Oh my god.” Buffy said.

The girl looked confused and even a little hurt, which of course was just so much like a certain blonde wiccan she knew. “I’m sorry?” She said softly.

Buffy reached out and touched the girls arm, it was solid, real and warm to the touch. “Oh god Tara?”

“H h h how do you know my name?” She asked her. “Sorry I I I don’t t think we’ve met before.” She said stuttering.

Buffy couldn’t believe it, it was Tara, although she looked a little younger that when she last saw her, the hair the face, so full of innocence. She looked in her late teens, and by the clothing she looked so much like the Tara she had first met back at Giles place when she was in Faith’s body.

This couldn’t be, Tara was dead she died four months ago, shot dead by Warren Meers, but here she was standing there. She could see the worry in the young blonde girl’s face, so Buffy relaxed a little.

“Sorry, your name is Tara Maclay isn’t it?” Buffy asked the blonde girl.

Tara looked surprised. “Y y yes it is, h h how do you know?”

“Because I know you, you were my friend, and my best friend’s girlfriend.” Buffy said, instantly regretting that.

“I I I have a boyfriend?” Tara looked completely shocked and surprised. “Oh god.”

Buffy quickly shook her head. “Oh god no, sorry my best friend is a girl.”

Tara looked a little relieved at knowing she had a girlfriend, she still felt surprised though. “I don’t believe it.” She said.

“God Tara, I am so sorry, it’s just this is so weird, I mean seeing you like this alive.” Buffy said, seeing the horrified look on the young girl’s face she mentally kicked herself for saying too much.

“A a a alive?” The blonde said, suddenly bursting into tears. “No, no, this is not real, oh god what is happening.”

Buffy quickly pulled Tara into her arms to try and comfort the stricken girl; she was obliviously terrified and completely confused at what was going on. “Sorry I am so sorry Tara.” Buffy apologized.

“What is going on?” Tara said, her face buried in Buffy’s hair. “Please tell me what is happening to me; this is just been the strangest day.”

Buffy looked into the young woman’s eyes, although she had no real idea if this was Tara, she looked, felt and sounded so much like her, and there was here blue eyes, and she had that look that told Buffy in her heart this was really Tara Maclay.

“Tara?” She said. “Come with me, I’ll get you a mint mocha, I know you like them.”

Tara managed a little half smile. “You really do know me.”

“Everything’s going to be ok Tara, I promise.” Buffy reassured the pretty young blonde. Inside Buffy was just as scared as the Tara, first of all there was how was she here alive, but the scariest thing of all was how to tell Willow that Tara was in Sunnydale alive and well.

Buffy sat the blonde wiccan down and went off to order two mint mocha’s from the expresso pump. She returned a few moments later and set the hot cup in front of Tara.

“Thank you.” Tara smiled.

“You’re welcome.” Buffy said returning the smile. “Still the same Tara alright, polite and so sweet natured.” She thought to herself.

Tara took a little sip of her mocha and set the cup down on the table, she shuffled her feet nervously. Buffy reached out and put a steadying hand on the wiccans sleeve.

“Tara, first things first, I’m Buffy, Buffy Summers.” She told her.

“Hi Buffy.” Tara gave her a gentle smile.

“I have to ask, but have you always lived in Sunnydale?” Buffy asked her.

Tara shook her head. “No, I I I moved here a few months ago, I got a scholarship at the college. But something is wrong, I I don’t understand what happened to me this morning.”

Buffy looked concerned. “What you mean?”

“I woke up in the middle of the storm, and then there was a big flash and a loud bang and I found myself lying outside.” Tara told her. “I I I don’t understand but everything is different.”

Buffy was confused now. “How do you mean different?”

Tara looked sad for a moment and perhaps a little scared too. “I I...” She started to say but stopped.

“Tara please tell me?” Buffy asked.

“You wouldn’t believe me, it’s a little crazy.” Tara said shyly.

Buffy gave her a smile. “Believe me, crazy is normal for me.” She said shrugging her shoulders. “Tara, it will be ok, please just tell me.”

Tara looked at the floor for a moment then turned back to Buffy. “I think I am in another reality, a parallel world.”

“Why do you think that?” Buffy asked.

“The magic shop destroyed, but yesterday it was all ok, the date, it’s October 2002, but I now I was in 1999 it was November.” Tara paused as she felt a few tears running down her cheeks. “I feel so lost Buffy.”

Buffy looked at her for a moment, she could tell that Tara was telling her the truth as far as she knew. Tara was still crying a little, and the fear in her eyes was obvious.

“Buffy can you please tell me why you said I was alive?” Tara said. “Does that mean I died here?”

Buffy swallowed and looked nervous. “Tara, you’ve had enough to deal with already ok?”

“Please tell me, I I I have to know.” Tara pleaded with her.

Buffy nodded. “You died several months ago, a guy shot you and you died in front of your girlfriend. Sorry I mean our Tara, not you.”

“Girlfriend, I didn’t think any girl would ever like me.” Tara whispered quietly. “I’m such a dork.”

Buffy reached out and rested her hand on top of Tara’s arm. “Believe me Tara, you were very much loved.” Buffy paused a moment. “God we miss you so much, Dawn and...”

“Dawn? Is that my girlfriend?” Tara interrupted her. “Sorry.”

Buffy shook her head. “No, Dawn is my sister, she adored you, and you were good friends.”

“What’s my girlfriend’s name?” Tara asked her.

Buffy smiled. “Willow, Willow Rosenberg.” She waited to see if there was any recognition in the Tara’s eyes, but there was nothing at all. Buffy felt a little sad. “Poor Will, she doesn’t even know you.” She thought to herself.

“Pretty name.” Tara said. “I I I just didn’t think I would ever find someone.”

“You will.” Buffy said smiling, but the smile soon faded as she thought about Willow, how could she explain to her that she had found Tara alive, but that she didn’t know Willow or had ever known her. “Oh god.” She said.

Unfortunately this alarmed the blonde girl, and she looked down at her coffee, a few strands of blonde hair falling down covering her face. “I I I don’t belong here do I?” She said softly. “I I can’t get home can I.”

“Do you want to?” Buffy asked her. She remembered the family that her Tara had come from, the nightmare people that they were.

“I I I don’t know, I I mean I feel alone there too.” She said stuttering nervously. “My family they h h hate me.”

Buffy smiled reassuringly at her. “Tara, if you don’t want to go, I know for a fact there are several people who will welcome you with very open arms.”

Tara looked up with a little hope in her pretty blue eyes. “R really?”

Buffy gave her a warm smile. “Totally, I promise, there’s me, Dawn and Xander, and of course Willow, Tara in our world, you were loved so much, god to see you here alive and well makes me think that perhaps the universe isn’t so bad after all.”

Tara returned the smile. “But your Tara is dead.”

Buffy nodded. “I know, but you’re alive and so much like her, in fact you are exactly as I remember a few years ago, just before Willow told me you two were a couple.”

“Were they close?” Tara asked.

“Very.” Buffy said. “When Tara, you know our Tara died, Willow was devastated, she missed her so much, she still does.”

“Then seeing me could hurt her more.” Tara said. “I would remind her of what she lost. I I I mean I’m not her Tara, I’m me.”

“I know.” Buffy said sadly. She didn’t know what to say to that, Willow would be overjoyed to see Tara alive, but it would hurt her badly knowing that this Tara didn’t love her or even know her. It could tip the recovering Wiccan over the edge again, but in another way it could help her, and perhaps this Tara might feel the same way and fall in love with her. “Fire bad, tree pretty.” Buffy said out loud.

“Sorry?” Tara said confused.

“Nothing sorry, it’s just all this is a lot to deal with.” Buffy said. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her purse, she removed a photo from and placed it on the table. It showed her, Willow and Xander all together.

“Is that Willow?” Tara asked her pointing to the smiling redhead.

Buffy nodded. “Yes.”

“S s s she’s very beautiful.” Tara said, tracing the outlines of Willow’s face, the delicate cheekbones and soft skin, her beautiful green eyes. “She really liked a girl like me?”

“Adored.” Buffy grinned, she remembered the loving looks on her best friends face whenever Tara was around. “She loved you, well Tara more than anything, my god you’re 20th birthday was so amazing, and you two looked so sweet.”

Tara began to feel nervous again and she looked away, she hated to think of her 20th Birthday, it meant the demon side could emerge and she couldn’t think any one would ever love her. Buffy could tell what was on the girls mind so she smiled and took her hand.

“Tara, one thing you need to know.” Buffy said. “You’re no demon, it’s a lie told to you by your family.”

Tara’s eyes widened. “How d d do you know that?”

“Tara it’s a lie, it was told to you by your family, Tara I mean the girl we knew she thought she was a demon. Tara you have to believe me, your human there is no demon in you.”

“B b but my family told me that, they said my magic comes from the demon within?” Tara said shaking. “It’s really all a lie?”

“Tara I think your family told you that to keep you under their control.” Buffy told her.

“I’m not a demon?”

Buffy shook her head. “No you’re not a demon, so please push that thought out of your mind ok? See Tara we know who you are and your reaction proves to me that you are really Tara Maclay.” She paused for a moment. “Come on Tara, I want to introduce you to my friends.

“What about Willow?” Tara asked.

“I’ll phone ahead, tell them to keep her away for a moment, then I can talk to her.” Buffy said taking out her telephone.

Later back at Buffy’s house

Dawn was out with her friend Kit, although lately Buffy and begin to suspect that Kit and Dawn where more than friends, the pretty goth girl had certainly taken a liking to Dawn, and Dawn really enjoyed her company.

Buffy had talked Xander to taking Willow out shopping for a while, then drop her back in an hour or so, he wanted to know why, but Buffy said that she would tell him soon, but she need to speak to Willow first.

Buffy had taken Tara up to her room for the moment, brought the wiccan a glass of water and told her to rest a while. Tara was still nervous though, but not as nervous as Buffy who now had to explain to her best friend that Tara was alive, but it wasn’t the same Tara she had known.

Buffy told her to rest a while, and she made up her bed and had placed a blanket over her to keep her warm. She made her way downstairs and prepared herself for the most difficult conversation in her life.

The door opened and Willow walked in, she was wearing her hair loose around her shoulders. She had a couple of bags of shopping with her, she set them down and saw Buffy sitting on the couch.

“Hey Buffy.” Willow greeted her.

“Hi Willow.” Buffy said.

Willow could tell that something was going on by the expression on Buffy’s face, she looked terrified. Willow came over and sat down on the couch next to her. “Buffy are you ok?”

Buffy swallowed nervously, she looked towards the stairs and then back at Willow. “It’s been a really weird day.” Buffy told her, which is certainly no lie.

“Are you ok?” Willow asked her again.

Buffy took a deep breath. “Willow, there is something I have to tell you.”

“Oh god, not Spike again?” Willow said.

“No god no, nothing to do with him.” Buffy said. “It’s more about you than anything.”

“Oh god.” Willow started to panic.

Buffy stood up and then knelt down in front of her best friend; she reached out and stroked the redhead’s soft hair. “Willow, you remember that storm this morning?”

Willow still looked nervous. “Yes I do.”

“Well I think it was no natural storm, I think it did something and I think it opened a door to another reality.” Buffy began to tell her. “And someone come through that door.”

“Oh god, not Glory again.” Willow said, her eyes widening. “Or some other evil, oh god not an evil me again.”

Buffy shook her head. “No, nothing evil came through; it was a person, a girl.”

“Who?” Willow asked her.

“Willow, she’s about 19 years old, you know her, but Willow and please Willow you have to understand this girl has never met you. She comes from a world in which you two don’t know each other.”

“What are you saying Buffy, who is it?” Willow was beginning to shake; she had a feeling in her gut that wouldn’t go away.

“Willow please, she comes from another reality and it appears a little in the past too, before you two knew each other.” Buffy said.

“Oh my god, Tara?” Willow instantly knew who she was talking about. “Tara.”

“It’s Tara.” Buffy said. “Willow she’s frightened, she’s never met you, me or Dawn or Xander.”

“Tara’s alive?” Willow asked her, tears streaming down her face.

“Willow, she’s not the Tara we knew, she’s a frightened girl who is feeling a little lost right now.

“But she’s Tara?” Willow pressed Buffy for the answer.

“She is Tara.” Buffy told her. “Just a little younger and very shy.”

Willow sat there stunned, Tara was alive, it wasn’t the Tara she loved, but it was Tara. Willow felt both overjoyed and also heartbroken, she was happy that at least Tara was alive in one sense, but she felt sad to know that this Tara didn’t love her. She had never loved her, never even met her, the tears began to flow freely from the redheads eyes.

“Oh god Buffy.” Willow said. “I feel like she’s been found, only to lose her again.”

“Willow, I’m so sorry, I don’t know what to say.” Buffy said. “I met her this morning outside the ruins of the magic shop. I didn’t know what else to do, the poor girl is frightened.”

“Where is she?” Willow asked her.

“Upstairs asleep.” Buffy said.

Willow stood up and began to walk towards the stairs, but Buffy stopped her. “Willow, you have to understand, this Tara is not the Tara we know.”

Willow nodded. “I know but I have to see her, least I know she is alive. Please Buffy.”

Buffy reluctantly nodded and released Willow’s arm, Willow took a deep breath and slowly climbed the stairs to Buffy’s room. She opened the door to see a blonde girl sleeping on the bed, her soft blonde locks fanned out on the pillow.

Willow stood there for a moment as she watched the girl sleeping, her soft pink lips opening slightly as she breathed in and out. Willow recognized her instantly as Tara, she was definitely a younger and she looked almost identical to when Willow first met the shy Wiccan at the Wicca group on campus.

She took a few steps towards her and then sat down on the bed next to the sleeping girl. She reached out and softly stroked the girl’s hair for a moment.

“Willow.” Buffy said cautiously.

Willow looked back at Buffy for a moment. “It’s ok Buffy.” She turned back to the sleeping Tara. “She looks so beautiful sleeping like that.”

At the sound of voices in the room, Tara began to awaken she slowly opened her eyes and waited for the world around her to come into focus. She turned her head and caught sight of a redheaded woman sitting next to her. Blue eyes met green eyes and both girls found themselves smiling at each other.

“Tara?” Willow said softly.

“Hi.” Tara whispered.

“Hey.” Willow echoed. “She’s so beautiful.” Willow thought to herself.

Tara rubbed her eyes, and she finally got a good look at the redhead who was smiling at her. This was the girl in the photo that Buffy had shown her, the pretty redhead who had been love with her, or at least this reality’s Tara. She was even prettier in person, soft delicate skin, and the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen in her life. Tara could see though that those eyes held pain, and sorrow, this girl had obviously been devastated at losing her girlfriend.

“I’m Willow.” The redhead said to her.

“I know, y y your friend Buffy told me about you.” Tara said smiling.

Willow caught her breath again as she heard the sweet angelic voice of Tara again, she started to cry the emotion of being this close to Tara again was just too much and she began to sob.

Buffy put her hand on her friends shoulder, and was about to pull her into an embrace, when she found that Tara and reached out and started to wipe the tears from Willow’s eyes, she then pulled Willow close to her and embraced her tight. She looked up and saw Buffy smiling at her; she nodded and then got up.

“I’ll be back a little while; I think you two might want to talk.” She said and then left the room closing the door behind her. “One down, two more to go.” She thought to herself, thinking about Dawn and Xander who had yet to know about Tara’s return, well a different Tara.

Buffy could tell straight away though that there was some kind of bond between them, that even though this Tara had never met Willow, there was some magic between them. Perhaps that could help mend Willow’s shattered heart, and maybe just help to bring a little piece of her family back.

Buffy’s bedroom.

“This is so unreal.” Willow said.

Tara looked sad for a moment. “I’m sorry about your Tara.” She said softly.

Willow stroked the girl’s cheek for a moment. “Thank you.”

“I guess, my being here must be painful, and I am really sorry.” The blonde told her.

Willow just stroked the blonde’s hair. “It’s ok, it’s a little strange, but at least I know you’re alive.”

“I just don’t believe that a girl as pretty as you, fell in love with someone as dorky as me.” Tara said.

Willow just smiled. “How could I not, you’re so beautiful Tara, your soft blue eyes, your smile, just everything about you.”

Tara blushed at the compliment. “I never thought of myself like that.”

“You should Tara; I know things must be a little weird right now.” Willow said.

Tara looked away for a moment, she still felt so lost. “W w willow?” She said softly. “I I I’m scared.”

Willow could feel the tears welling in her eyes again, she felt so sorry for the beautiful shy girl. She was pretty much alone in the world right now; she just brushed a few strands of hair from the blonde girls face and then pulled her into a warm embrace.

“Shhh sweetie.” Willow said softly. “Everything’s going to be ok I promise you, you’re safe now.”

“Willow I I I don’t know what is going to happen to me now?” Tara gently whispered.

“Tara you’re safe, I promise.” Willow reassured her. She looked into the blonde’s eyes. “Tara if you could go home would you want to?”

Tara thought for a moment, she remembered everyone teasing her about her stuttering, her shyness and then she remembered her family. Her family who hated her, who told her she was a demon and that she was evil. “Willow, I don’t want to, everyone was so mean to me.”

“Your family as well, I remember.” Willow said.

“Buffy said I wasn’t a demon, she said it was a lie they told me.” Tara said to her.

“Buffy is right, you’re not a demon, I mean how could someone so soft and gentle be evil.” Willow said smiling; she took Tara’s hand and stroked it gently. “I know that at least here with us, you would be well loved. Dawn adored you, my Tara and she used to go for movies and milkshakes each week. Dawn will be overjoyed to see you about I promise you that.”

“Sounds like your Tara was not as shy as I am.” Tara said looking away for a moment.

“She was, when we first met she was exactly like you.” Willow smiled. “It was a while before you met my friends, as I well liked just having you to myself.”

Tara’s little smile sent the warm fuzzy feeling through Willow, she so missed that smile, the tenderness that only Tara had. Even though this wasn’t really her Tara she still felt the connection and the attraction to the beautiful girl.

Willow felt the sadness return as she had to remember that this girl never knew her, they had never dated or kissed or even made love. Willow missed her touch badly, the tenderness of just sharing her life with the shy blonde. She could feel the emotions welling up within her; she felt a little tear trickle down her cheek.

Tara saw the tear rolling down the redhead’s cheek, she felt guilty that it was probably due to her that Willow was feeling sad. “I’m sorry.” She said softly. “It’s me isn’t it, I I I I’m supposed to be dead here”

Willow looked horrified. “God no Tara, please don’t think that, you should never have died here, it’s just when I last saw my Tara alive we were so in love. I guess it’s just hard for me to know that we were never together.”

“I I I’m sorry Willow, it’s just everything has gone crazy around me and I don’t know why I am here, my head hurts with all this.” Tara said. “I mean I find out that another me, who had a wonderful life with a beautiful girlfriend. I had a horrible life before, my family my mom died a few years ago.” Tara began to cry, the emotions in her overwhelmed the young woman and she began to sob.

Willow’s heart broke and she pulled Tara close, just trying to give her some comfort from the embrace. She just wanted to hold her, to let her know she was not going to be alone. “Oh Tara, sweetie your going to be fine.” She gently stroke Tara’s soft hair.

“Hold me please Willow, just hold me.” Tara cried.

Willow held her close as much pain as she was in, she could feel it easing as in her arms was Tara Maclay, she might not have been her Tara but this girl was still the same beautiful blonde she had met several years ago.

Even as Tara cried she could feel a little peace in her heart, here in this confusing world, she was in the arms of someone who cared about her. Tara had never really had anyone care about her since her mother died, but at least she felt safe here in Willow’s arms.

Buffy peeked through the door and saw Willow holding Tara close to her in an embrace; she could Tara crying and Willow just whispering softly to her. Buffy felt herself choked with emotions herself, but she could feel a little happiness as the sight of Willow with Tara was amazing. Even though they had really only just met for the first time, she could tell the magic was still there.

“Welcome home Tara.” She whispered.

Later

Buffy sat alone on the sofa watching television; she heard footsteps on the stairs. It was a very red eyed and teary Willow; Buffy stood up and went over to her best friend.

“Hey are you ok?” Buffy asked her.

Willow just shrugged her shoulders. “It’s so strange Buffy; I mean she’s Tara she has that same look in her eyes. Goddess she is so beautiful but she doesn’t know me Buffy.”

Buffy gave the redhead a little hug. “Willow give her time, she’s been through a lot. How is she doing?”

“She’s asleep.” Willow said. “She cried so much, poor thing I mean she’s all alone Buffy.”

“No she isn’t.” Buffy said. “She has us.”

Willow gave her a little half smile. “I know, we’re all she has now Buffy, I just want to be there for her.”

“It will be ok Willow I promise, I know you and she never met, but believe me, when I showed her your photo I saw a little twinkle in her eyes. Just give her time Willow.”

“She’s so much like the girl I first met, the same girl I fell head over heels in love with.” Willow told her. “She’s so beautiful Buffy.”

Just then the door slammed open and in rushed an excited Anya followed by a breathless Xander Harris.

“God Anya, what’s going on?” Buffy said, annoyed that the loud noise might awaken Tara. “Keep the noise down ok.”

Anya just glared at Buffy. “Why is Spike here or something?”

Buffy shook her head. “No but we have a guest upstairs ok.”

Anya put the bags down and strolled into the lounge. “Did you see that storm this morning; I haven’t seen one of those in over 300 years.”

Buffy stopped and walked up to Anya. “What do you mean?”

“The storm, it was a rare temporal rift storm, this is a good sign.” Anya said beaming.

Buffy and Willow looked at each other as they knew that it was this storm was responsible from bringing Tara through. “Go on?” Buffy asked her. “What’s so good about them?”

Anya strolled over to the couch and sat down, Buffy and Willow followed her. “Well they are very rare; they have been known to bring things through if anything was caught up during a strike.”

Willow looked anxious. “What about people?”

“Yes has happened, although I pity anyone who has come through one of these tears.” Anya said still sounding pretty happy.

Willow looked alarmed. “Why what happens to them?”

Anya sighed. “Nothing to them, but they are trapped here forever, anyone caught up in one has a one way ticket.”

Buffy and Willow looked a little relieved. “Does it harm them?”

Anya shook her head. “No, they are harmless; you know unless you get transported into a wall or lava pit or something, but no if they make it through intact they are perfectly safe.” She paused for a moment. “Why all the questions about this, oh my god someone came through didn’t they?”

Willow nodded. “Yes.”

Anya looked at the red rimmed eyes of Willow and remembering the questions that both Buffy and Willow had asked. She stood up and looked deep into Willow’s eyes. “Tara?” She said. “Tara came through.”

Willow’s voice faltered a little. “It’s Tara.”

Xander looked confused. “What do you mean it’s Tara, she’s dead Anya she died in Willow’s arms.” He looked at the pained expression on Willow’s face. “Sorry Will, I didn’t mean to be so harsh.”

Willow didn’t reply she just felt a few tears trickling down her cheeks; Buffy took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.

“Xander enough.” Anya scolded him. “She’s Tara isn’t she?”

Willow nodded. “She is Tara, I I mean she’s like Tara when I first met her three years ago, but it’s defiantly her.”

“Oh dear god, are you saying that Tara is alive?” Xander said.

“She is from another reality but yes it’s Tara and she is very much alive.” Buffy told him. He was about to walk up the stairs but Buffy stopped him. “No she needs to sleep, she’s a little lost right now so please let her rest ok?”

Xander relaxed. “Sure ok, god this is unreal.”

Anya put her hand on Willow’s arm. “Well Willow, looks like the powers that be have smiled on you.”

“W why do you say that.” Willow asked hesitantly.

“Because if the person who comes through to a world where they have perhaps died, then it is a sign that the powers are attempting to correct a mistake.” Anya explained.

“A mistake, what do you mean by that?” Willow was close to losing control of her emotions, she could feel tears welling up within.

“I mean that Tara should never have died, she belongs here so like I said it’s your lucky day.” Anya said.

“She’s doesn’t know me.” Willow said sadly. “We never met before.”

Buffy put her arm around Willow to comfort her; she knew it must be painful for the redhead. “You two belong together, give it time ok.”

“How are you holding up Will?” Xander asked her.

Willow shrugged her shoulders. “It’s strange, but she is Tara I am just happy to know that at least this girl is alive and well, it’s going to take some getting used to, but she is still Tara and I just want to take care of her, she’s a little lost right now.”

“Well she’ll be ok; she has you and all of us to make sure of that.” He said.

Upstairs.

Tara opened her eyes to find herself alone in the bedroom, her eyes were sore from so much crying. She slowly sat up in the bed and looked around the room; it was still unfamiliar to her. She hoped that Willow had stayed with her for a little while; it felt so natural to be in the redhead’s arms.

She stood up and walked over to the mirror on the dressing table, she quickly brushed her hair with her hand. “My eyes look terrible.” She said quietly to herself. “Willow must thing I am terrible for crying so much.”

She felt sorry for Willow the poor girl must be going through a lot of pain with her here in this world. She sighed and then opened to door; she could hear voices in the hallway below her. She guessed that they were probably talking about her; she looked down at the carpet for a moment.

Tara knew that she had to face people sooner or later so she walked to the top of the stairs, she could see two new faces and she just glimpsed the redhead to the side. Gathering her strength she called out.

“Willow?”

Everyone at the bottom of the stairs turned to face her, Tara backed away a little. She was nervous around new people and suddenly being the focus of attention was a little too much for the shy blonde.

“Tara?” Willow called out to her she quickly climbed the stairs and reached out instinctively for her hand. “Are you ok sweetie?”

Tara nodded. “I I I think so Willow.” She felt Willow take her hand and she felt a little calmer at her warm touch. “I woke up and you were gone, so I c c came looking for you.”

“Sorry.” Willow said, brushing a few strands of Tara’s hair from her eyes. “I just thought it best to let you sleep a while.”

Tara gave her a little half smile. “It’s ok, you’re here now.”

Xander stared at her, it was all true there was Tara standing at the top of the stairs, alive and safe she looked younger than he remembered. “I cant believe it.” He said quietly. “She’s real, but she looks I don’t know maybe a little younger?”

“She seems to be from a few years in our past, but it’s defiantly Tara.” Buffy told him.

“This is so unreal.” He said. “God this is so bizarre, Buffy do you think Tara likes her?”

Buffy nodded. “For sure look at the way Tara is looking at her, and you can see the love in Willow’s eyes still.”

“Even though she isn’t her Tara?” He asked.

“She is still Tara; she’s just new that’s all.” Buffy replied. “Give them time.”

The door opened behind them and Dawn Summers walked in and threw her bag down on the ground in fury. “I hate that school.”

“Oh god, Dawnmeisters not happy.” Xander said.

“Stupid Kirsty I hate her.” Dawn said fuming.

“Why what’s she done?” Buffy asked.

“Spreading it all over school about you and R.J. in the classroom, god why does she have to tell everyone.” Dawn said. “Bad enough she torments Kit all the time.”

“Who’s Kit?” Anya asked.

“Oh a friend from school.” Dawn replied. She didn’t feel ready to tell anyone that her feelings for the pretty goth girl were more of the romantic nature just yet.

“Anyway enough about my crappy da…..” Her voice trailed off as she caught sight of someone at the top of the stairs. Her eyes went wide with shock; standing next to Willow was a blonde girl. Dawn took climbed the first couple of steps to get a better look, and then she saw her face clearly.

“Oh my god. Tara!” Dawn said. “Tara, is that you.”

Buffy reached out and stopped her sister before she could get any further. “Dawn wait a moment.”

Dawn broke free of Buffy and ran up the stairs and threw her arms around Tara’s waist. “Oh my god, you’re alive Tara.”

Tara looked somewhat surprised at the reaction, no one had ever been quite so happy to see her. “Um hi.” She said quietly.

Dawn looked up at her; she could see that she looked a few years younger than she remembered. She looked a lot more like the girl Willow first introduced. “Tara is that really you?”

Willow spoke up. “Dawnie, it’s Tara, but it’s a little complicated ok?”

“How can be complicated it’s your girlfriend Willow, it’s Tara she’s alive.” Dawn said confused.

Willow instantly felt sad, Tara sensed the sadness and with one hand she gave the redhead’s hand a little squeeze. Willow managed a little smile. “Dawn, she doesn’t know us really, she’s I don’t know how to say it but she comes from an alternate reality to ours.” Willow explained. “She’s trapped here.”

“But she is Tara?”

“Yes.”

Dawn looked up into Tara’s eyes. “Is this true?”

Tara managed a little smile. “Yes, I I I’m sorry.”

“Oh god.” Dawn breathed.

Tara looked sad now and she started to look away, but Dawn kept her arms around Tara’s waist. Dawn wasn’t still too sure what was going on but the only thing she cared about was that Tara or at least this Tara wasn’t dead, she was alive.

“Can you get home?” Dawn asked her.

“I I I don’t know.” Tara said honestly.

“That means we could lose you again.” Dawn told her.

Buffy climbed the stairs and put her hand on Dawn’s shoulder. “Dawn, I think we need to tell Tara something ok. She turned to Willow and gave her a little nod; she then started back down the stairs. Dawn broke the embrace and followed her sister.

“Tara, we found out thanks to Anya what happened to you.” Willow told her. “I think you’d better sit down.”

Willow took her hand and led her down the stairs, she paused at the bottom. “Tara, this is Xander one of my best friends and this is Anya she is a friend too.”

“Hi.” Tara said shyly.

“Hello Tara, nice to see you not dead.” Anya said.

“Um thank you.” Tara said with a little smile.

Xander gave her a warm smile. “Hi Tara.”

“Hi.”

Willow led her to the sofa and sat her down, she sat down on the sofa next to her and kept Tara’s hand in her own. “Tara, the storm that brought you here, you can’t go back.”

“I can’t go back at all?” Tara asked her.

“No, I’m sorry Tara.” Willow answered.

Tara looked away for a moment and then turned back to face Willow. “It’s ok; I mean I had nothing to go back to.” She said. “No one.” She added in a whisper.

Buffy and Dawn came over to where the two girls were sitting, Buffy sat on the chair just opposite and Dawn sat on the arm. Willow turned to Buffy with a pleading look in her eyes. “Buffy is it ok if Tara stays with us.”

“Willow it’s up to Tara but she is more than welcome.” Buffy said.

“Totally, we would love to have you with us.” Dawn pleaded to Tara.

“A a are you sure that’s ok?” Tara asked.

“Yes of course.” Buffy said. “Consider it your place too.”

Tara nodded. “Thank you.”

“That’s settled then.” Willow said.

Tara turned to Buffy. “Buffy, may I have a glass of water please, or at least tell me where the kitchen is?”

Buffy smiled, this Tara was just as polite too, that was one other thing everyone adored about her. “Dawn, do you want to show Tara where the kitchen is?”

“Sure ok.” Dawn said brightly, she grabbed Tara’s hand. “Come on Tara, I’ll show you where the kitchen is.”

Tara led by Dawn left the lounge and walked into the kitchen, Willow watched with a smile as the young blonde woman left. Xander noticed her gaze and he sighed. “Willow?” He began.

“Yes Xander.”

“How do you feel about her?” He asked his best friend.

“She’s Tara.” Willow answered him simply.

“I know, but Willow, she isn’t your Tara, she’s not the same girl you fell in love with is she?” He pressed her.

Willow’s smile began to fade. “Xander, she is still Tara, it’s complicated I know, but the look in her eyes, they way she speaks, she is Tara.”

“But she doesn’t love you does she?” He asked.

Willow could feel a tear rising. “No, she barely knows me.”

“Will, you should back away.” He said. “Give her some breathing space, at least for now anyway.”

“What?” Willow looked both shocked and hurt at his comment.

Buffy looked angry. Xander what the hell do you mean by that for gods sake?”

Xander shook his head. “I mean this Tara, she’s not from our world our reality is she? I think with all of us fawning over her and the fact in this world she died.” He paused for a moment. “The girl you loved Willow is buried in Sunnydale Cemetery.”

“Xander, shut up.” Buffy said fuming now.

“Buffy we all saw what happened when Tara died, Willow lost control, and I just don’t want her getting hurt again ok?” He said.

“I think you mean you don’t want Willow hurting us.” Buffy said.

Willow was crying now, Xander’s words cut her to the core and they hurt. She turned away and buried her face in the cushion unable to look at anyone.

“No Buffy, I don’t want to see Willow getting hurt ok, she’s been though enough since Tara died.” He said. “This girl is Tara yes, and don’t get me wrong I am happy to see her, but she’s new and she’s not really one of us is she?”

“That’s enough Xander….” Buffy stopped. She could see Tara standing in the door way, she had overheard the conversation. Even from a distance she could see the tears in the young woman’s eyes. “Oh god.”

Tara was shaking she took a step forward and touched the door handle, she gave it a twist and prepared to open the door. “I I I I’m so sorry, I I I can’t do this.” She said and then opened the door and ran outside. The door slammed shut behind her, causing everyone to jump.

Pairings. Tara/Willow, Buffy/Faith, Dawn/Kit
Spoilers: S7, Before Bring on The Night totally AU, mostly romance in this story.

Willow looked up to see the blonde disappearing out the door. “Oh god Tara no!” She stood up but Buffy stopped her.

“Willow wait a moment.” The blonde slayer said.

“Buffy no, she’s all alone here, I’m going after her.” Willow said. “I have to find her.”

“Willow I’m sorry.” Xander said. “I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

“Shut up.” Buffy glared at him. “Ok Willow, I’ll check the campus, and you head to town.”

Dawn who had just entered the room spoke up. “I think I know where she’s going.”

“Where?” Willow and Buffy asked her.

“To see Tara, our Tara.” The young girl answered.

“Dawn how can you be sure of that?” Willow asked her.

Dawn looked away for a moment, and then faced the redhead. “She asked me were she; well you know were Tara was buried.”

Buffy let go of Willow’s arm. “Willow go find her.”

Willow gave her best friend a half smile. “I always can.”

Sunnydale Cemetery

Tara walked along the path and entered the gates that led to the cemetery; even from here she could see a large number of headstones. For a medium sized town it had a huge cemetery that thought alone was not very comforting.

She felt the cold chill of the wind go through her as she passed by some of the headstones; many of them were of younger people her own age that had died. Tara felt so alone and lost, Xander’s words had almost torn a hole in the shy wiccan’s heart.

Tara just couldn’t stand being somewhere she wasn’t wanted, and to keep hearing over and over that in this world Tara Maclay was dead. She looked up into the sky, she could feel the chill of the evening setting in, and in a couple of hours the sun would set.

After a short while she found what she was looking for, the headstone of the young woman who everyone had been talking about. “Oh goddess.”

She read it out loud. “Tara Maclay October 16th 1980 – May 7, 2002.” Tara reached out and touched the top of the grave marker; there were still a handful of stones on top of the gravestone.

Tara knelt down on the grass and traced the outline the name with her fingers. She could feel the tears welling up from with her. It was all true, Tara Maclay beloved girlfriend of Willow, and friend to Buffy was dead. The girl who had her life in this world was gone before her time.

“I’m dead, I should be dead.” She said. “Oh goddess, what is happening to me?”

Tara began to cry, the sobs came thick and fast as she wept. The emotions of the past few hours had caught up with her, she had never felt more alone that she did right now. Torn from her own world and stranded in a world she didn’t really belong.

“I hate this why is it happening to me.” She said to no one. “Everything bad always happens to me. I feel so alone.” She cried.

“No you’re not alone.” A soft voice called out to her.

Tara looked up and saw a slightly breathless Willow running over towards her. Willow too had been crying from the damp patches on her cheek. Willow reached her and sat down in front of the blonde wiccan.

“Tara, you’re never alone.” She said, fighting back her own tears.

“Willow, I feel so lost, I I I don’t belong here do I?” Tara asked her, through her tears.

Willow reached out and took Tara’s hand; she was relieved when the blonde girl didn’t retreat. She gently wiped the tears from Tara’s face and brushed her hair away from her eyes.

“Tara don’t say that, you do belong here, I know this world is new and I guess frightening, but Tara we need you.” Willow took her other hand, she looked into Tara’s blue eyes. “I I I need you.”

Tara turned to the gravestone which her own name. “But she’s your Tara.”

Willow looked sad for a moment, then she began to cry. “We should have been forever.” Willow said through her tears. “Tara, I can’t undo what happened, god knows I tried. I would have done anything to see her again.”

Tara looked away. “I’m so s s s sorry; I wish I could say something to make it better, to help you.”

Willow wiped a tear from her eye. “Tara you’re here and right now, that is helping me, I promise you. I know you’re not from our world, but I can feel something of her in you, and you share so much, I look at you and I know I can see her in your heart.” Releasing one hand she softly brushed a few wisps of the blonde’s hair from her face.

“But Xander...” Tara began.

“Tara, he was wrong to say what he did, Buffy, Dawn and I we care about you so much, please Tara, come home with me.” Willow begged her. “I promise you sweetie, you will be welcome.”

“W w w willow, I’m scared, everything has just happened so suddenly.” Tara said, she started to sob again.

“I’m scared to Tara.” Willow choked with her own emotions just pulled the beautiful blonde to her and wrapped her arms tight around her. “Tara I don’t know much about the world you came from, but I know you are loved here.”

“Even though I am different?” Tara asked.

Willow released her for a moment and kissed her on her forehead. “You’re not really that different Tara, you’re just like the same sweet shy girl I first fell in love with.” Willow said. “Tara all that matters is you are safe ok?”

Tara nodded, as confused and frightened as she felt, being around Willow help to ease her fears. There was something special about Willow, and Tara couldn’t help but feel that she needed to be with her. “Willow?”

Willow looked at her for a moment. “Yes Tara?”

“At least we can be scared together.” Tara said managing a little giggle. “I just feel so safe with you.”

Willow felt her heart flutter with a moment of joy, she smiled at Tara. “Come on Tara, let’s get you home.” Willow said slowly standing up and pulling the blonde with her. “Please?”

Tara slowly nodded. “Ok.”

Willow then just stood next to headstone, she kissed her fingers and then touched the outline of the letters on the grave marker. “I can feel you in her baby.” She whispered.

The warm glow that Willow felt in her body confirmed it, she had to take care of this girl, she was Tara of that there could be no doubt. She took Tara’s hand in her own. “Tara, no matter what happens, we’re your family now ok?”

Tara smiled. “Thank you.” She paused for a moment. “Um Willow, can I ask you something.”

“Sure.”

“I heard Xander say you lost control, what does that mean?” Tara asked her.

Willow swallowed and looked nervous, she released Tara’s hand. “Like you I’m a witch.”

“I know you’re very powerful I can tell.” Tara said.

“I wish I wasn’t, when Tara died you know, I went crazy with grief, I did things I hurt people, I I I..” Willow stopped.

“You hurt people?” Tara asked.

“I killed the man who shot you, I lost control, the grief the rage everything, Xander and Giles stopped me brought me back.” Willow confessed. “I went to England, to learn how to control my magic’s.”

Tara looked away for a moment, ever since she had met the redhead, she could tell she was powerful. But to hear that she had lost total control of her magic’s was a shock, as the petite young woman seemed so gentle and kind.

“Tara, I am scared of what I can do, I am scared of losing control again.” Willow said. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

Tara stopped her with a smile, she looked deep into Willow’s eyes, her blue eyes met Willow’s green. She could see the pain and anguish in the redhead’s face, but she saw a kind and gentle girl. “Willow.”

“Tara.”

“I’ve seen your heart Willow, you’re not a bad person, I don’t know what happened in the past, but I see you as you are now and…” She stopped for a moment, and gave Willow a little smile. “I I I trust you.”

Willow without thinking just pulled Tara into her arms, and kissed her fully on the lips. The move totally surprised the blonde but she didn’t back away instead Tara just returned the kiss and gave her a smile.

“That was nice.” Tara said.

“Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself.” Willow apologized.

Tara took Willow’s hand. “It’s ok.” She said biting her lower lip. “I’ve never really had a kiss like that before.”

“Tara, lets get you back home ok?”

“I’d like that.” Tara said smiling.

***

1630 Revello Drive.

Willow opened the door and waited for Tara to enter the house first, then she followed her and closed the door behind her. Willow then took her hand and led her back into the lounge. Buffy and Dawn were sitting on the couch, they both looked pleased to see Tara.

“Tara, are you ok?” Buffy asked her.

“I think so, I’m sorry I ran off but I I I just felt like I didn’t belong here.” Tara replied.

Dawn stood up and threw her arms around Tara’s waist and held her tight. “Tara you belong with us, please please stay here ok?” Dawn pleaded with her. “I don’t want to lose you again.”

Tara returned the embrace holding Dawn close to her, she glanced up and looked into Willow’s green eyes. Willow just gave her a reassuring nod and smile. Buffy stood up as well and came over to the blonde wiccan.

“Tara this is your home now.” She said. “Please stay?”

Tara smiled. “T t thank you, I will.” She looked around for Xander, but he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Puzzled she spoke. “Where’s Xander?”

Buffy reached out and put her hand on the blonde’s shoulder. “Tara, he’s not here he went home.”

Tara nodded. “Oh.”

“I’m sorry for what happened, and I know he is as well, Tara he’ll pop by tomorrow ok to apologize.” Buffy told her.

“It’s ok, I I I guess this must be a big shock to everyone.” Tara said softly.

Willow took her hand. “Tara, it’s a big shock to you as well sweetie.”

“It is.” Tara agreed.

“Hey guys, listen I’m kinda hungry.” Dawn jumped in. “What’s say we get something to eat.”

Buffy managed a little laugh. “Good idea Dawn, and in honor of Tara’s return let’s pig out.”

“Pizza?” Dawn asked excitedly.

“Dawn, maybe Tara could choose ok?”

Tara thought for a moment, she was pretty hungry herself. “Um Pizza sounds really nice, but maybe a v…” Tara began to say.

“Vegetarian pizza.” Interrupted Dawn. “I know you like that.”

Tara smiled, she looked around at Buffy, then to Dawn who was all smiles, and then she faced Willow. Dawn broke her embrace and then Buffy gave the blonde girl a brief hug to let her know that this was her home. Once Buffy had let go, Willow just placed her hands on Tara’s hips and gently brought her close. Moving her hands up she pulled Tara close to her body and hugged her tight.

“Tara I just want you to feel at home here.” Willow told her.

“I know Willow, thank you.” Tara said smiling. “It’s been such a strange day.”

Willow giggled. “Welcome to life in Sunnydale.”

Tara put her own arms around Willow, for some reason it just felt so natural and right. Although to her she had never met Willow before today, there was something special about her that made Tara feel safe and loved.

“Guys, what about sleeping arrangements?” Dawn said. “I mean where is Tara going to sleep?”

“Good question.” Buffy said. “I mean I guess you could room with Dawn or me?”

Tara didn’t quite know what to say to that. “Um I guess I could take the couch?”

Willow looked away for a moment she knew deep down in her heart that the girl who she was holding in her arms, barely knew her. They had never really kissed, shared a bed or even made love.

“Tara, no you’re not sleeping down here alone ok?” Buffy said, she could see the pained look in Willow’s face.

“I guess so.” Tara said quietly. “I think I know why you don’t want me to sleep in Willow’s room.”

Buffy smiled. “Tara it’s entirely up to you, but I guess with things being complicated with you two, maybe it’s not such a good idea.”

Willow said nothing, she didn’t want to pressurized the young woman. She just waited for Tara to make up her mind, could feel everyone’s eyes burning into her. She didn’t return the glances instead just looking away to the floor.

Tara too thought about the choices, she barely knew any of them, although with Willow she felt something, a connection that she couldn’t deny. Tara could almost feel Willow’s heart pounding away next to her own.

“Willow?” Tara asked.

“Yes Tara.”

“C c c could I share with you, I I I mean at least I’ll sleep on the floor.” Tara asked her hesitantly, her voice faltering.

“Tara, I’ll take the floor, you can take my bed ok?” Willow suggested brightening up.

“A are you sure?” Tara smiled.

“Totally.” Willow said returning the smile.

“Well I’ll put down a spare mattress for you Willow, and a couple of blankets so should be nice and comfy.” Buffy said. “Tara are you sure?”

“I am Buffy.” Tara nodded.

Buffy just smiled. “It’s settled then, right Dawnie lets order the pizzas and prepare the table ok.”

“Sure.” Dawn said, she then faced the blonde wiccan. “Tara I am so glad to see you, I really am.”

“Thank you, I I I’m happy to be here.” Tara said, and for the first time she genuinely felt she was happy.

Buffy and Dawn left the two wiccan’s alone, for a brief moment there was silence. Willow looked up at Tara, green eyes met blue and again they could feel there hearts almost beating as one.

“Willow?” Tara asked.

“What is it Tara?” Willow replied.

“Thank you for making me feel welcome, we’ve only just met yet part of me feels like I’ve known you forever. I can feel you in my heart Willow, I am beginning to feel like I belong here.” She paused for a moment. “How do you make me feel so special?”

Willow bit her lower lip and smiled into Tara’s eyes. “Magic.”

Morning

Tara opened her eyes to the dim morning light, the first few rays where streaming through the window. The bed felt so soft and warm as her eyes adjusted to the light in the room. She glanced at the clock that was next to the bed, it showed the time as just gone six am. She let out a little sigh as realized it was still early in the morning. She was wearing a pair of pajamas that she had been given to her by Buffy.

Still it had been the most peaceful night’s sleep in many months; she was free of the fear that she was part demon. She slid herself to the edge of the bed and gazed down and the sleeping redhead. Willow was still fast asleep on the mattress; she looked so beautiful to Tara’s eyes.

Willow was lying on one side her face mashed against the pillow, her lips gently opening and closing as she breathed in and out. Her eyelids where fluttering a little as she dreamed. Tara propped herself up on one arm and just watched her for a while.

“How could someone so beautiful have been in love with a girl like me?” Tara whispered softly. “You’re just so beautiful Willow.”

Suddenly there was a loud noise it sounded almost like a gunshot, and within a second Willow was awake and screaming. “God no Tara, please god no don’t die!”

Willow’s scream made Tara jump even more than the noise had done, she sat bolt upright in bed. “Willow?”

Willow was sweating and she had a look of sheer terror on her face, she saw Tara sitting up in the bed, and she quickly threw back her bed covers, stood up and rushed the bed.

“Tara are you ok?” Willow said clearly panicked. “I heard the noise, please baby are you ok?”

Tara looked somewhat frightened herself. “Willow, what’s going on are you ok?” She echoed Willow’s own words.

“Tara are you hurt?” Willow was bordering on panic, tears where in her pale green eyes.

Tara shook her head. “Willow I’m ok, I I I think it was a car backfiring, that’s all.”

Willow checked to be sure, there was no sign of a bullet wound or blood anywhere on the blonde girl’s body. Willow just pulled Tara close to her and hugged her tight, crying into her hair. “Oh god Tara, I thought I’d lost you again.” She sobbed.

Tara could feel Willow’s sorrow and heartache as it was a bullet that had robbed Willow of her lover. She wrapped her own arms around the redhead’s waist and whispered softly in her ear. “Willow, please don’t worry ok.”

“I can’t lose you again Tara.” Willow said through her tears. “Oh goddess.”

The door opened and Buffy rushed in still in her pajamas, she saw Willow crying in Tara’s hair. “Oh god what happened, I heard Willow scream out.”

Tara looked up. “I think the noise startled her, I I think it was a car.”

Buffy looked at the window pane, it was intact no hole in the glass, obviously Willow had thought it was a gunshot and panicked.

“Will?” Buffy called out.

Willow lifted her head from Tara’s shoulder and turned to face her best friend. She had tears in her eyes and she was shaking. “Buffy.”

Buffy came over to the bed and sat down next to the two girls; she ran her hand through Willow’s hair. “It’s ok Willow, everyone’s safe.”

Willow nodded. “I know it’s just I had bad memories.”

“I know Willow, but it’s ok Tara’s safe.” Buffy reassured her.

Tara kissed Willow on her forehead. “I’m fine Willow, I promise.” She then turned to Buffy. “She’s ok I think.”

“Will honey, try and go back to sleep ok?” Buffy said. “No one’s been hurt.”

“Ok thanks Buffy, sorry I gave you a fright.” Willow said.

“Hey don’t worry, it’s ok.” Buffy said and gave Willow a little kiss on the top of her head. “Just rest a while ok, just sleep in today ok.”

“I will thanks.” Willow said.

Buffy got up and left the room closing the door behind her, Tara looked into Willow’s eyes. “Are you ok Willow?”

“I think so, it’s just I was scared you had been shot.” Willow said, wiping a tear away from her eye.

“I’m right here.” Tara said.

Willow broke the embrace. “God I am so sorry I must have scared you.”

Tara smiled. “It was a little bit of a shock.”

“It’s still early Tara, we should get some sleep.” Willow said and started to move away and go back to her mattress. She felt a hand stop her; she looked up into Tara’s soft and gentle blue eyes.

“This is your bed Willow, y y y you should stay here.” Tara said softly. “I’ll take the floor ok?”

Willow shook her head. “Tara, I know we barely know each other, but please could you do something for me?”

“S s sure.”

“Stay with me please?” Willow asked her.

Tara looked a little nervous but she nodded. “Ok.”

Willow took Tara’s hand and she lay down on the soft bed sheet’s it was still warm from where Tara had been sleeping. Her head lay on the pillow and she could smell the sweet scent of Tara’s hair. The blonde lay down next to her and Willow wrapped one arm around her waist.

Comforted by Tara’s presence it wasn’t long before the redhead drifted back off to sleep; just knowing that Tara was safe gave her some peace. Tara watched her face for a while as Willow closed her eyes, she could see a little smile on her face. Tara found herself holding her breath for a while as she just watched her; she had never seen someone so beautiful in her life.

Tara leaned closer and gently planted a little kiss on her cheek and then she settled back and closed her eyes. She briefly opened them again just to make sure Willow was still there. “Sleep well little angel.” She whispered then she too drifted back off to sleep.

Some hours later

Buffy quietly opened the door to Willow’s room; she had been worried about her best friend since hearing her scream a few hours ago. She peeked in the room to see the empty mattress. She looked up to see Willow in her own bed with Tara next to her, both girls were fast asleep.

She let herself smile as she saw them together; as much as she knew it was complicated they looked sweet together. She hoped that this Tara might be able to heal the gaping hole in Willow’s heart.

Closing the door as quietly as she could Buffy made her way to the kitchen; her younger sister was already up and had made breakfast.

“Hey Dawn.” Buffy said with a little smile.

Hi Buffy, how’s the Willow, I heard her scream during the night?” Dawn asked.

“She’s asleep again, that car backfiring caused her to panic.” Buffy said. “God poor Willow she thought Tara was going to die again.”

Dawn looked down at her bowl of cereal. “She’s really hurting isn’t she?”

Buffy nodded. “She is, but you know something, I don’t think Tara’s appearance is just random you know, she’s here for a reason.”

“Why do you say that?” Dawn asked somewhat puzzled.

“Willow is hurting bad ok? Then what happens Tara appears, ok she’s from some other reality but it’s Tara.” Buffy said. “She appears at the time Willow needs her the most, not only that Tara was alone in her world, here she will be loved. This was meant to be Dawn, Tara belongs here.”

Dawn gave a little half smile. “I’m glad she’s here.”

“So am I Dawnie.” Buffy agreed. “Willow needs her too.”

“Even though they haven’t met?” Dawn asked.

“I can’t explain it Dawn, the girl we met yesterday is new, but in a way she belongs here.” Buffy tried to explain. “Sorry I guess I suck at explanations. It’s just a feeling I get that’s all. They belong together I know that much.”

“I know, I love them so much.” Dawn said.

They were interrupted as the phone went, Buffy sighed and walked over to pick it. “Hi.” She said into the receiver.

“Hello Buffy.” The voice said.

“Hey Giles, long time no hear from.” Buffy said. “How have you been?”

“Good thank you, Buffy I need to talk to you.” He said.

“Giles this is a phone, people talk on it.” She giggled. “People have been doing it for a long time.”

“Very funny Buffy, this is serious.” He said not impressed with her humor. “The coven has been in touch with me about something that appears to have happened in Sunnydale.”

The smile on Buffy’s face faded. “Oh, what’s going on?”

“They said that a door opened, a rip in the walls of reality.” He explained. “They said it occurred in Sunnydale, are you aware of anything unusual?”

Buffy swallowed. “You could say that.”

“Oh dear god Buffy, what’s happened is everyone ok?” He said suddenly very concerned.

“Everyone’s ok Giles, although Willow is a little wigged out.” Buffy said.

“In what respect?” He asked.

“Because Tara’s here.” She said.

There was total silence on the line for a moment, she could hear him on the line. Finally after a short pause he spoke again. “Tara as in Willow’s late girlfriend?”

“Yes, she’s a little different, she appears to be a little younger, she doesn’t know us, but it’s Tara.” Buffy explained. “She’s here Giles, Tara is alive.”

Again there was silence for a moment. “Giles?” Buffy said after a while.

“Sorry I guess little bit of a shock, how is she?” He asked.

“Who Tara or Willow?”

“Both really.” He said.

“Willow’s a little shocked to say the least, Tara is feeling a little lost.” Buffy said. “They need each other Giles.”

“Buffy you said that this Tara doesn’t know us, so I am guessing she never dated Willow?” He asked.

“No, but I saw the look in her eyes Giles, there is something between them, it’s like they belong together.” Buffy said, she just hoped she wasn’t going to go through another lecture like the one Xander gave yesterday. “I can tell Tara likes her.”

“Buffy my only worry is what if Tara is thrown back to her world.” Giles began to say.

“Giles its ok, Anya seems to know about these things, she said they are one way only, Tara can’t go back.” Buffy said. “

“I see.” He said. “Listen Buffy I will be with in a few days anyway, things are going on with the hellmouth, and it’s not good news.”

“I know from beneath you it devours.” Buffy said.

“I shall see you soon, and in the meantime I am glad to hear that Tara is there, even if she is new I have a feeling she is just what Willow needs, perhaps what we all need.” Giles said. “Good day Buffy.”

“Thanks Giles.” She said and hung up. “Thank god for that, at least Giles is happy to hear Tara is alive.” She said to her sister.

“Well I am going to make them breakfast.” Dawn said. “Pancakes, syrup and all things yummy.”

Buffy laughed. “Not sure those are the most nutritious foods, but to hell with it.”

“Buffy?”

“Yes Dawn?”

“I really hope Tara can help her, I don’t know maybe they will get together.” Dawn said.

Buffy put her hand on her sister’s shoulder. “I think they will, whatever it was first drew Willow to Tara after Oz left her, I can still see the magic between them.”

“They are so cute together.” Dawn said smiling.

Buffy nodded. “They are Dawn, they really are.”

Watchers Council, London England

It was chaos in the council chambers; everyone was rushing around, talking on the phone to various contacts. Quentin Travers stood next to the conference table, he was reading a report that had come in from Turkey when Marcus, his deputy approached him. His face showed fear for the first time.

“They took our files, wiped out our records. We've lost contact with operations in Munich, Switzerland and Rome. We've got casualty confirmations coming in from as far away as Melbourne.” Marcus told him sadly.

“Sir, we are crippled.” Lydia the tall blonde woman said. “Everything is beginning to fall apart. We’ve lost contact with Rupert Giles as well.”

Quentin put a steady hand on her shoulder to try and reassure the young woman. “It's all right, Lydia. We are still masters of our fate, still captains of our souls.”

“Yes, sir.” She nodded she left the room, not daring to show the fear in her eyes.

Quentin tapped his cane on the table to get everyone’s attention. “Ladies and gentlemen, our fears have been confirmed. The First Evil has declared all-out war on this institution. Their first volleys proved most effective. I, for one, think it's time we struck back.”

He paused for a moment. “Give me confirmations on all remaining operatives. Visuals and tactical's. Highest alert. Get them here as soon as possible. Begin preparations for mobilization. Once we're accounted for, I want to be ready to move.”

“Sir where are going?” Phillip asked him.

“We'll be paying a visit to the hell mouth. My friends, these are the times that define us. Proverbs 24:6. O, by wise council, you shall make your war.” Quentin told them standing proud. “Once we arrive in Sunnydale we will meet with Miss Summers and the others.” He turned to the blonde woman next to him. “Lydia, are you all set?” Quentin asked her.

She nodded. “I am sir.”

“Good, I wish you a safe journey; you must get this book into the hands of the slayer.” He said. “Go now; we will join you in a few days once we have mustered what is left of our resources.”

Lydia left the room, making her way out of the building she reached the parking bay and got into her car. “I hope Rupert Giles is safe.” She said to herself.

Starting the engine she drove out from the underground parking lot, exiting the lot she started the long drive towards Heathrow airport, where she need to catch her flight to Sunnydale.

She didn’t get far when she heard a huge explosion behind her; she glanced in her rear view mirror to see a huge fireball engulf the building that belonged to the watchers council. Glass from nearby buildings shattered and Lydia felt her car shake from the blast.

“Oh my god.” She screamed. Closing her eyes for moment, she said a silent prayer for her friends and colleagues who had probably just died. Her training took over and she knew what she had to do. “I must get to Sunnydale.”

Hiyas, next part is posted, got a big storyline coming up with my take on Conversations with Dead people, it is heavy Willow/Tara, i thought it best to focus on them as there is a twist coming.

Great take on the whole Tara-from-alternative-universe-replacing-Tara-Prime meme. Don't sweat that it's been done before; remember, it's the singer, not the song. This is a great read.

Looking forward to what you do with the rest of S7.

And bringing Lydia into it reminds me, well,of specualtion on I forget which board where posters made much of her stepping a little bit to the side and out of main part of the room before things went blooie. Odd the forms nostalgia takes....
And this Quentin makes a lot more sense the canonical one. Yes I know often established institutions sacrifice their stated mission in favor of self-continuation, but I think the show "over-made" that point. This seems more like the way a real person would act.

And Willow with ALternatara; it makes the whole thing a wonder. I do have some reservatiosn about the instant-relationship aspect of it but that's soemthing that can easily come out in the wash.

Hiya and many thanks for the feedback everyone, glad you like it so far.

Willow and Tara arnt a couple just yet, that is still a little way off, they will grow closer in time, although it is hard to write this because of Willow's feelings for Tara. Lydia i liked so thought it would be fun to bring her in for the ride, . Still working on the conversations with dead people chapter. hope to post in a couple of days

you know, you should warn about the updates! i'm fairly sure i didn't see any post of yours in the update thread and i managed to read these just now! anyway, i loved the little kiss at the cemetery and the snuggling in bed, it's really sweet. i always love W/T in the early stages of their relationships, and i also love the idea of alternate tara, which reminds me, a bit, of Bound, by Lisa of Nine, i think.....try and read it, it's great! anyway, update soon 'cause your story's terrific!

Yeap, another awesomely-great story! At first, I was afraid that the new-Tara was going to reject everyone and somewhat fight the feels that she felt, when she first saw Willow. But space nor time could keep their feelings apart. Anyhoo, I'm so looking forward to more! Keep them updates comin'. Take care and Smiles. =)

Next Part is done

***

1630 Revello Drive.

Willow slowly awoke she opened her eyes to see the still sleeping form of Tara beside her. She felt a little sigh of relief to see the blonde wiccan laying next to her. She still struggled to cope with the fact that this was really Tara alive and well. While she was younger and so much like the shy innocent young woman she met three years ago, it was undeniably her.

She felt herself smiling as she saw the peaceful look on her face, Tara always looked so cute when she slept. Willow remember the first night that they slept in the same bed, just after Buffy had run off with Riley on some mission. Willow had been hurt and upset with Buffy because it was supposed to be their night at the bronze.

Willow had gone to see Tara after that and they spent the rest of the evening talking and enjoying each others company. She remembered her arms around the blonde girl’s waist, feeling the warmth of her body. The soft delicate scent of her hair, and just how beautiful Tara was.

That was the moment that Willow really knew that she was falling in love with her, they that morning as Tara left her the dolls eye crystal they kissed for the first time. The memory brought a little smile to her face, now here she was staring at Tara like it was that morning all over again.

Willow closed her eyes for a moment, again she could feel Tara’s spirit in her, opening her eyes again she saw that Tara was beginning to stir. Tara yawned and her eye lids fluttered open, Willow saw the familiar blue eyes and she felt her own heart flutter as she saw Tara’s smile.

“Hey you.” Willow greeted the young woman.

“Hi.” She said returning the smile. “A a are you ok Willow?”

Willow nodded. “I am Tara; sorry I scared you this morning.”

“It’s ok I understand what happened.” Tara said. “I’m just glad you’re ok.”

Willow smiled. “I’m glad you’re ok to Tara.”

Tara watched her for a moment; she slid her hand out from under the covers and softly stroked a few wisps of Willow’s hair. She smiled as Willow’s face almost became so serene at her touch, Tara could feel the butterflies in her stomach as she did so.

“Willow, c c can I tell you something?” Tara asked her softly.

“Sure Tara, you can tell me anything.” Willow replied.

“Y y you’re very beautiful.” Tara said.

Willow’s cheeks flushed at the compliment, she could feel herself smiling she bit her lower lip. “Tara so are you.”

They just looked into each others eyes for a moment, and then they could feel themselves moving just a little closer to each other, their lips almost touching. They were interrupted by a knock at the door; both girls rolled their eyes and sighed.

“Yes?” Willow called out reluctantly.

“Are you two ok, it’s just we made breakfast, its pancakes.” Dawn said through the door.

“Thanks Dawnie, we’ll be down in a moment.” Willow settled back into the pillow. “Talk about worst timing ever.” She thought to herself. “Are you hungry Tara?”

Tara nodded. “Yes I am, although I didn’t think I would be after the pizza last night.”

“I guess we’d better get up.” Willow said. “Otherwise little Dawnie will be mad that we missed pancakes.”

“Sure ok.” Tara said, she then stopped. “Oh my god.”

“Tara what’s wrong?” Willow asked her.

“Um clothes, I kinda don’t have much with me.” She replied somewhat embarrassed.

Willow sat up. “I think we have some stuff that would fit you, so don’t worry ok.”

Tara still looked a little red-faced. “Does that include underwear?”

Willow giggled. “Yes it does Tara, first thing is lets get pancakes and then we’ll sort out some clothes ok?”

“Thank you Willow.”

They both got out of bed and stood up for a moment, Tara looked down at herself. “I think these are a little tight around the chest.” She said.

Willow laughed. “Well you are a little more ample in the boobies than Buffy.”

Again Tara blushed. “I guess.”

Willow smiled. “Tara you look beautiful, come on lets go.”

She reached out and took Tara’s hand relieved once again that the shy blonde didn’t retreat at her touch. Tara too felt happier at Willow’s touch, again she could feel something special about her.

They walked into the kitchen, both Dawn and Buffy saw them and they broke out into huge grins. Dawn looked overjoyed to see Tara she ran over and threw her arms around Tara’s waist.

“That’s one way to say good morning.” Tara said smiling. “Hi Dawn.”

“Good morning Tara.” The young brunette said, she then broke from Tara and gave Willow a hug too. “Hey Willow.”

“Hi Dawnie.” She said, and then turned to her best friend. “Morning Buffy, sorry about earlier.”

“Will, don’t worry ok, everything’s fine this morning.” Buffy said.

“Hi Buffy.” Tara greeted her.

“Hey Tara, sleep well?” Buffy asked.

“I did thank you.” Tara said returning her smile.

“Come on girls, Dawn made you breakfast so enjoy ok?” Buffy said. “This has to be a once in a lifetime offer.”

“Thank you Dawn.” Tara said. “This looks great.”

Willow and Tara sat down on the empty chairs, and Willow picked up a few of the pancakes and placed them on a plate and passed them to Tara. She took a few for herself and then poured some syrup over them and then did the same for Tara.

Buffy watched Willow for a moment, she seemed so much calmer and more contented than she had been for many months since that fateful day.

“I know I might be out of place here, and I know you’re new here Tara, but I have to say you two look lovely.” Buffy said smiling.

Both girls blushed. “Thanks Buffy.” Willow said.
“I totally agree with that.” Dawn added.

Willow laughed. “My god you two agreeing on something.”

There was a knock at the door. “I’ll go, maybe its Xander come to apologize for his outburst yesterday.”

Buffy left the kitchen and walked to the hallway, she opened the door, and it was Xander holding a large bunch of flowers.

“Hi Buffy.”

“Xander.” She said, the tone of her voice a little cold.

“I came to say sorry, is Tara there?” He asked, his voice subdued.

“She’s in the kitchen with Willow.” Buffy answered.

“Thanks.” He said, he turned to Buffy again. “I’m really sorry; I know I was out of line.”

“I’m not the one you should apologize to, but thanks.” Buffy said.

He nodded and walked past her and towards the kitchen; he stood in the doorway, out of sight, just watching them for a moment. Tara was slowly picking at one of the pancakes, while Willow was sipping from her coffee mug. Tara looked so sweet; every so often she would glance at Willow, who at times would catch her and they would share a little smile.

Willow too seemed a little brighter than the past few weeks, just having the blonde around always seemed to brighten her spirits. The others were right it was good to have her back.

He took a couple of steps into the room, the flowers hidden behind his back.

“Hi girls.” He said.

“Xander.” Willow said her smile fading.

“Listen Tara, I am really very sorry for what I said yesterday, I was very wrong.” He said. He brought out the flowers from behind his back and gave them to the blonde girl.

“Thank you.” She said.

“Willow I am really sorry too. I had no right to say what I said.” He said. “I was an ass.” He said to her. “I know you guys aren’t together, I just maybe in time it might work out for you both.”

“Thanks Xander.” Willow said softening at last. “It will just take some time I think.” Willow admitted. “It’s only been a day since we met.”

Tara smiled she knew it must be hard for Willow and for her too, she had been thrust into a world only to find out she had died here. She felt something for Willow, a connection that was impossible to deny. She agreed in her heart that maybe in time maybe the spark would become a flame between them.

“Well I’m sure you’ll both work it out.” He said.

Buffy came up behind him and have him a hug. “That’s much better, this is what I want, all of us together, as it should be.” She stopped. “Where’s Anya?”

“She’s shopping; I’ll catch up with her later.” He said.

“Glad you two are talking again.” Buffy said.

“Slowly but surely.” He smiled.

“Hey what is everyone’s plan for today?” Buffy asked.

“Well I am supposed to be going to the library to get some more books, was going to study late as well. Not sure now as Tara’s here.” Willow replied. “Dawnie you’re not at school today?”

Dawn looked embarrassed. “No not today, its ok all covered huh Buffy?”

Buffy nodded. “Little excited at having Tara around I think.”

“Um Willow.” Tara said.

Willow smiled as she looked into Tara’s eyes. “Yes sweetie.”

“W why don’t you go tonight, I should be ok.” Tara suggested.

Willow shook her head. “No Tara, I’m not leaving you alone, I just don’t think it’s a good idea at the moment.”

Tara looked away for a moment then she faced Willow again. “Maybe I I I could come with you?”

Willow broke in to a little grin. “Sure, I’d like that Tara, how about you Buffster whatcha doing?”

“Little bit of shopping and then patrol tonight I guess, see what’s with all the disappearing people lately.” Buffy said.

Tara looked a little puzzled. “Buffy are you working for the police or something?”

“Sorry?” Buffy asked confused.

“You said about patrol and looking for people, do you work for the police?” Tara asked.

Willow took Tara’s hand and smiled at her, she had forgotten that she probably didn’t know about the slayer or vampires. The poor girl was going to be in for a bit of a shock. She nodded at Buffy who then took a deep breath and sat down next to Tara.

“Tara there are something’s you will need to know about life in Sunnydale.” Buffy told her, taking her other hand. “I’m the slayer, as in vampire slayer.”

“Really?”

Buffy continued. “I fight vampires and demons, its kinda my calling so patrol tonight is making sure the local bumpy forehead population are kept to minimum.” She smiled. “Sorry I guess this must be a shock, you know vampires and demons.”

Tara smiled. “I sensed something when I arrived here, I can feel a dark energy in this place.” She said closing her eyes for a moment. “Something very evil and dark.” She said after a moment. “So you fight them?”

“Yeah I do, Willow and Xander help out too.” Buffy told her. “Willow is a very powerful witch.”

“I can tell she is.” Tara said.

“I wish I wasn’t.” Willow said. “Magic still scares me you know, I swear I get dark roots even if I do a locator spell.”

Willow’s comment prompted a little giggle from Dawn, and a slightly worried look on Buffy’s face.

“Tara I’m guess you’re a witch too right?” Buffy asked the blonde girl.

“I am, not that powerful but yes I am.” Tara replied and then turned to Willow with a little smile. “Willow?”

“Yes Tara?”

Tara’s hand slipped out from under Willow’s and she lightly touched Willow’s sleeve. “M m maybe I can help you, with the m magic.”

“You could?” Willow asked her.

“Yes, your energy is not focused at the moment, maybe with m my help you can learn c c control and focus.” Tara said. “Sorry I didn’t mean to say it like that, I ….”

Willow smiled. “Tara its ok, I know I have issues right now with magic so I would like that very much.” She leaned over and gave her a little kiss on the cheek. “We can work together.”

Tara gave her a little grin. “Cool.”

Buffy stood up and walked over to Xander and dragged him off into the dining room. She whispered into his ear. “Tara likes her.”

Xander just smiled and nodded. “I really was an ass; she is just what Willow needs.” He whispered back. “It’s kinda weird I feel like our Tara is right here in that young girl.”

Buffy nodded. “I know, I feel it too, it’s so nice to see Tara, god I missed her so much.”

“I know what you mean. She always had a calming influence on everyone, one day already and Willow’s becoming more like her old self.” He agreed. “Look at them.”

They both watched the two wiccan’s for a while; Tara was still casting little shy glances at Willow, then blushing when Willow caught her.

Willow too kept looking at Tara and smiling when ever she caught the blonde watching her. Buffy had to smile while they were not a couple, she could see the attraction between them. She hoped that in time the two girls would perhaps spark up a relationship, but for now they just seemed comfortable as things were.

“Cute.” Buffy simply said.

“Very.” Xander agreed.

Buffy walked back into the kitchen. “Tara?” She asked.

The blonde girl looked up from her breakfast. “Yes Buffy?”

“I know you don’t have much in the way of clothes, and I know this could be a little touchy for Willow, but we still have some on Tara’s clothes here.” Buffy said, she could see Willow looking down at her plate for a moment. “Maybe you could wear something for today then tomorrow get you some clothes of your own?” She turned to her best friend. “Sorry Willow, we can do something else if that’s too painful for you?”

Willow had gone a little pale as she remembered that a lot of Tara’s clothing had been stored in the loft after that day. She looked up into Buffy’s eyes for a moment, and then she turned to face Tara. The blonde wiccan looked away to the floor; she was fidgeting nervously on her chair. “Maybe I I I should get some of my own.” She said her soft voice almost a whisper.

Buffy could tell both girls where uncomfortable so she made up her own mind. “Ok sorry, forget it, I’ll pop into town and pick up a few items for you.” She turned to Xander. “Could you give me a lift into town?”

“Sure Buffy.” He said.

“Tara just write down your sizes and I’ll get you a few things ok?” She said smiling. “Don’t worry about the money ok, I still enough left from Giles thanks to the insurance payout from the magic shop.”

“I’ll do that, thank you.” Tara said.

Willow looked relieved. “Thank you Buffy.”

Tara reached out and took one of Willow’s hands; they turned to face each other. “Willow, are you ok?” She asked her.

“I am Tara, please don’t think it’s you ok sweetie?” Willow said. “It’s just going to take a while to get used to things. But I am really happy to see you ok?”

“I just don’t want to hurt you Willow.” Tara said softly.

Willow stood up and threw her arms around Tara and held her tight against her body, she gently stroked her back. “Oh Tara, you aren’t hurting me at all, goddess having you here is a blessing.”

Tara wrapped her own arms around Willow and hugged her tight. “I barely know you, yet I really care about you Willow, you’re a very special girl.”

Willow looked up into her eyes, she could almost see into the shy wiccan’s soul. Though the worry and the fear in her eyes, Willow could see warmth and a strength too.

Tara smiled and wrote down her details on a piece of paper given to her by Dawn, she handed it to Buffy. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome Tara.” Buffy said returning the smile. She put the piece of paper in her pocket and then went over to her and gave the blonde a hug. “Just so happy to see you that’s all?”

“Buffy, you’re not pawing Willow’s girl are you?” Dawn laughed, then she felt guilty, as Tara and Willow were not really a couple. “Sorry getting ahead of myself.”

“Dawn, things are not like that ok.” Willow said. “Tara is new here ok, things are complicated right now.” She gave the younger Summers girl a little smile. She looked to Tara who gave her a little smile and a nod. “Who knows in time Dawnie.”

“Ok Willow, sorry I just you know love you two.” She grinned and turned to her sister. “Um Buffy?

“Yes Dawn.”

“Is it ok if Kit comes over tonight, I mean with you out on patrol and Willow and Tara going to the library, it would be nice to chill out together.” Dawn asked, her voice hopeful. “Please Buffy?”

“Sure ok, I’ll let you have some money and you can order out, but please Dawnie, no pizza tonight ok?”

“Sure ok, thanks Buffy.” Dawn grinned; she washed her plate and left the kitchen to go head back to her room. “I’m just going to phone her ok?” Poking her head round the door.

“Dawnie, she’s at school.” Buffy reminded her.

“I know, she’ll be out of class soon, so I’ll leave a message on her cellphone.” Dawn replied.

Buffy sighed as she watched her sister leave. “Well I guess I need to go shopping, I’ll catch you two girls in a while ok?”

“Sure Buffy, and thanks, you too Xander.” Willow said.

“See you later girls.” He said smiling.

Buffy grabbed Xander’s arm and dragged him out of the kitchen leaving the two wiccans alone.

“Alone at last.” Willow said as she heard the door close.

Tara stirred her coffee and looked up at Willow. “I just can’t believe this has happened to me.”

“Baby is something wrong?” Willow asked her, a little concerned.

Tara shook her head and took Willow’s hand. “Nothing is wrong Willow, it’s just until I met Buffy and you, thought my life was horrible, I mean with my family and then I just never met people at college, I I I felt so alone.”

Willow relaxed a little she gave Tara’s hand a little gentle squeeze, the last thing she wanted was her to feel uncomfortable.

Tara continued. “Willow, I I I know things for you must be so weird with me around, but I am happy to have met you.” She suddenly felt shy again and she looked away.

Willow touched her face and gently brought Tara back to look at her. “Tara I care about you, you’re a very special girl. I am really happy to see you here, I know what you’re like Tara, and you care so much about others, but little for yourself.”

“I don’t like to hurt people’s feelings.” Tara said softly.

“Sweetie you’re just as I remember you the day we, sorry Tara and I first met, a beautiful shy girl with a heart of gold. You’re that girl Tara, you never have to worry ok, this is your home now, and we’re your family Tara.”

“Least here I feel welcome.” Tara said. “I I mean with my own family they hate me.”

“I know, we met them well you know, my Tara’s family which I guess where pretty much like yours. So does that mean they are yours or hers, I don’t know all this alternate universe stuff makes my head hurt.” Willow said, unaware she was babbling.

Tara giggled. “I think I got that.

Willow sighed. “I was babbling wasn’t I?”

Tara smiled and nodded. “It’s kinda cute.”

“I bet they don’t have anti babble spells in your world either do they?” Willow giggled. “Still I think we should relax, when Buffy gets back with some clothes, we can sort them out.”

“Good idea.” Tara agreed. “Um Willow about sleeping arrangements I would be happy to take the floor tonight?”

Willow shook her head. “No Tara, I’ll take the floor it was comfy enough, you take my bed ok, don’t worry I promise not to freak out on you again.”

“A are you sure?”

“I am.” Willow smiled. “No let’s finish breakfast and I’ll take you on a tour of the house, then when Buffy gets back, we’ll get your clothes sorted out.”

“Cool.” Tara said. “I’ll be back in a moment I just need the bathroom.”

Willow watched her go and then she stood up and walked over to the window. She gazed out into the garden, it was empty at this time of the morning. Willow reached out and traced a pattern on the cold glass with a finger.

Closing her eyes she could picture Buffy and Xander talking outside, then Warren coming in and shooting Buffy, then a stray bullet hitting Tara.

“Willow your shirt.” She could almost hear the echo of her lover’s voice in her mind.

Willow felt a cold chill run through her body, the pain in her heart was still there, she still missed her every day of her life. Up until yesterday almost every day had been a struggle, but then the impossible happened.

A shy blonde girl appeared and it was Tara, younger but still Tara. Even just seeing her walking around alive was enough to begin to give Willow hope that things might get better. She could tell this was Tara, everything about the pretty 19 year old blonde told Willow it was Tara, from the look in her sapphire blue eyes to the gently tone in her voice.

She traced Tara’s name into the window with her finger, despite the coldness of the glasses as she traced each letter she felt a warmth inside of her. The warmth of her girlfriend’s spirit inside of her, she could feel voice singing inside of her heart. Willow for the first time in a long while felt a moment of peace, she knew part of it was her Tara watching over her, and some was thanks to the shy blonde who had come into this world.

“Thank you.” She whispered to the sky.

Tara entered the kitchen to see Willow standing by the door her fingers against the glass of the door. Even though she hardly knew the redhead, a little piece of her wanted to go over to her and comfort her. Tara knew what the pain of losing someone could do, after her own mother died she had lost herself in grief. Disobeying her father, staying out with her best friend till the early hours. Even going as far as planning to resurrect her from the dead, even though 2 years had passed she still missed her mother.

Summoning up a little courage she walked over to Willow. “A a are you ok Willow.” She said softly.

Willow removed her hand from the window pane and turned around to see the concerned look etched on Tara’s face. She reached out and took the blondes hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I’m ok Tara, just thinking about Tara, you and things.” She said, still seeing concern on her face she smiled. “Really Tara I’m ok, you’re a big part of helping me to feel better.”

Tara relaxed and returned the smile, she lowered her head suddenly feeling shy again. “I I I I’m glad your ok.”

Willow took a deep breath. “Come on Tara, I’ll show you around ok, then we can talk the library. Hey maybe you can start up school here, I mean you went to UCL Sunnydale anyway so why not?”

“I’d like that, I just hope they have a wiccan group here.” Tara said.

Willow giggled. “Don’t bother, they are a bunch of wannablessedbe’s, still it’s were we met, well you know Tara and I though.”

“Oh same as the o o one from my world.” Tara sighed and rolled her eyes.

“Don’t worry Tara, we’re both witches we can work together ok?”

Tara smiled. “I’d like that.”

Conversations with Dead People
Later that evening

Willow sat on her chair in the library her head resting on one hand as she stared at her book. Tara had gone to fetch a couple of books from the upper section for her. She read a few lines of the text but once again her mind wandered back to Tara. The past day or so had been such a whirlwind she had little time to deal with the strange circumstances of her appearance in Sunnydale.

She had dealt with someone crossing over from an alternate reality before, the vampire version of herself a few years ago. Anya had often told of alternate worlds, but this was different. Somehow another Tara had crossed over, entering Willow’s life just when she need her so much. The death of her Tara still hurt and she badly missed her, it hurt worse because she died just after they had reconciled.

Willow still felt her loss, but she could feel the pain easing because of another worlds Tara. Even though they had never met before yesterday, Willow still felt that her Tara was part of this girl. Every time Tara looked at her she felt it, the magic the closeness and the attraction.

She smiled and looked up to the ceiling. “Thank you.” She whispered to the powers that be, she knew they probably had something to do with it. Seeing Tara alive was a miracle and the she had finally started to feel hope that perhaps the universe wasn’t so bad after all.

She felt in time that perhaps they could become closer, but for now Willow knew in her heart that the best thing was to give themselves time, time for her own heart to mend, and time for Tara to get used to this world.

Willow was startled by a noise; she looked up and saw a familiar blonde woman with pink streaks in her hair leaning on one of the bookcases. She couldn’t remember the name for the moment; Willow sat up and looked at her for a moment. “Hi.” She greeted the young girl.

“Hi there.” The girl replied. “Didn’t realize that this library was so big.”

Willow smiled. “Yeah I wish they would give me a map or something.”

The girl laughed. “I always wanted to study here, but I guess I never will.”

Willow looked at her again for a moment, and then it hit her; this was the girl who Buffy had tried to save a month ago. “You’re Cassie Newton?”

“You are a clever one.” She said still smiling.

Willow looked somewhat puzzled. “You can’t be here, you died?”

“Well your friend Buffy died twice she’s still around.” Cassie reminded her. “Besides yeah I am dead, just think of me as a ghost or something ok?”

Willow looked nervous she wondered if Tara was ok, and hoped that the blonde would return shortly. She just continued to stare at the young woman before her. “Sorry.” Was all she could say to the girl?

“Don’t be things are easier where I am, where we are.” She said to Willow.

“We?” Willow frowned.

“You know she still sings to you, even though you can’t hear her.” The ghost of Cassie said to her. “Remember the time on the bridge?”

Willow’s eyes widened. “Tara?” She said as she could feel tears welling in her eyes. “You can talk to her? Why can’t I see her?” Willow asked Cassie.

“Because of what you did, when you lost control.” Cassie replied her voice cold.

“Can you talk to her?” Willow asked. “I mean really talk to her?”

“I can.”

Willow had never dared to hope that she could maybe speak to her Tara again. “Oh god Tara baby, I miss you so much.”

Cassie smiled. “She says she misses you too, she’s crying.”

Willow felt her own tears running down her cheeks now. “Baby, sweetie don’t cry, please baby talk to me.”

“She can, through me.” Cassie said softly.

“Oh god baby I am sorry, when you died I lost control I hurt so many people. I killed people.” Willow said crying hard now, tears running down her cheeks and onto the table.

Cassie gave her a sympathetic look. “You where grieving Willow.”

Willow looked a little shocked. “Well when most people grieve they don’t go flaying people. Did I mention the magic box; it’s not so much a box now, id say it’s more like a pile of rubble.”

“Willow it’s the power within you.” Cassie said. “The power is so much bigger than you.”

“I know.” Willow said sadly, she looked away for a moment. “I just wish I could hold you again Tara.”

Cassie sat down in the chair and folded her arms on the desk; she never took her eyes off Willow. “She wishes she could touch hold you in her arms.”

“I wish that too, god Tara you know something amaz…” Willow began to say but Cassie interrupted her.

“Willow, Tara sent me because we can see your path, we have to warn you.” Cassie said her voice unwavering.

Willow looked distraught. “Oh god no, what do you mean?”

“Willow, you’re going to kill everyone.” Cassie told her bluntly, the words sent a chill down Willow’s spine.

“God no.” Willow said her voice shaking.

Elsewhere in the Library

Tara felt a little cold in the huge library, she knew that the Sunnydale College had a large collection of books, but this was amazing. She had offered to search for a few books for Willow, while Willow concentrated on her study.

Willow had wanted her to stay with her, but Tara said that she wouldn’t be long and that Willow could study better for a little while on her own. Tara promised she wouldn’t be long, at which Willow finally gave in.

The other reason Tara offered to get the books was so she could spend a few moments alone with her thoughts. She was still coming to terms with her arrival in this world, a world in which she had died in her girlfriend’s arms.

Tara smiled as she thought of Willow, although she had only know her a day or so, she knew she was attracted to the beautiful redhead. Being around her was amazing, she was so sweet and it was clear that Willow liked her. She felt sorry for her though more so as she was identical to the girl Willow lost; it must be so confusing for her.

“I hope you’re going to be ok Willow.” She whispered.

Tara picked up a book and gently caressed the spine; she put it in her basket and started to search for the other book that Willow had asked for. Suddenly she stopped; she felt a cold chill run through her body. She could sense that something was wrong here, a darkness, there was evil here.

“Oh god Willow.” She said worried.

Tara dropped the basket and then began to head back to Willow as quickly as she could.

***

Willow looked on in horror this couldn’t be right, surely she wasn’t going to kill everyone. “How can I stop myself.”

“You could give up magic, and I mean never do another spell again.” Cassie suggested.

“I could, oh god Giles said quitting could make it worse.” Willow told her. “I want to, but I don’t know if I can, I don’t want to murder all my friends, I wish I could be stronger.”

“She said you have to be strong, you remember strong like an amazon.” Cassie said.

“I’m not strong.” Willow said she was getting more and more upset. “What can I do?”

“There is one other thing?” Cassie said a wry smile on her face.

“Anything please tell me?”

“Well it would mean you could see her again, be with her?”

“Really?” Willow said hopefully?

“Well it’s easy, just like going to sleep really.” Cassie said. “Then you can be with her.”

Just then Tara came running up behind Willow she saw the figure of the girl and her eyes went wide; this was the source of the darkness, the evil. “Oh god.”

Cassie looked up and saw the young girl enter her expression changed in an instant, she stood up and glared with total hatred at Tara. “What the hell.” She said. “This is unexpected.”

Willow too stood up quickly causing the chair to slide back across the floor. “Who the hell are you?” She said to Cassie though her tears.

Tara stood next to Willow and put her hand on her arm, Willow was still crying, her face damp from the tears. She glared at the young girl opposite.

Cassie’s eyes burned with a hatred that was clear to Willow and Tara, it was evident that she had not expected to see Tara. “You don’t belong here little girl, I don’t know what is going on but you’re supposed to be dead.” She said with venom in her voice. “This is not meant to be like this, what are you doing he….” Her voice trailed off. “Ahh so this is there game is it, well if they think by bring you here it changes anything, then they are gravely mistaken.”

“What do you mean I I I’m nothing.” Tara said.

Cassie laughed. “You really don’t know do you.” She laughed even harder. “Poor little girl, well by the time I am done you will be nothing, but in the meantime I will have to deal with your little girlfriend first.” Cassie said.

“W w w why Willow?” Tara asked. “Leave her alone.”

“Because the world would be better off without her, she belongs with her dead girlfriend.” Cassie said. “Although you don’t appear to be that dead, but I’ll take care of that oversight soon enough.”

“N n n n n no Willow is special, s s s s she belongs here.” Tara said, stuttering badly.

Willow could say nothing, she was too stunned to speak she had thought she was talking to Tara through this girl, but her Tara was all about life, she would never want Willow to hurt herself.

“Leave her alone.” Tara said to Cassie.

“Why should I, just when I was getting her ripe enough to kill herself, you know, sad song on the radio, picture of her dead girlfriend in her bloody lap.” Cassie said.

“Stop it you’re not a messenger from Tara.” Willow said her voice shaking.

Cassie leaned forward and glared at Willow. “No little girl I’m not, last year is going to seem like a vacation after what I put you and your pathetic friends through last year. I’m not a fan of the easy death either, fact is I am done playing nice with the whole good versus evil thing, this time I am going for the big finish.” She said, turning to Tara with her eyes burning with hatred. “You Tara, I know what you are doing here, but I’ll put a stop to their little game, I’ll be coming for you as soon as your girlfriend has been dealt with.”

“From beneath you it devours.” Willow said remembering the vision in England.

“Oh not it, me!” Cassie said laughing. “You know Willow perhaps I’ll kill this Tara in front of you, see if you go over the edge again, that could be a lot of fun.”

“Get out.” Willow screamed at her. “Leave us alone.”

Cassie just grinned at them both, the skin on her face began to roll back, her jaws flipped over and she began to turn inside out. Willow grabbed Tara’s hand and they stared in horror as the face became a floating ball of flesh and then disappeared in a flash.

Willow was still shaking and then she collapsed to the floor in a flood of tears. Tara still holding her hand sat down beside her and wrapped her own arms around the redhead’s waist. She took was crying mostly because Willow was, but also through fear at what ever that creature was.

“Tara, something’s coming something really bad.” Willow said. “It wants me dead.”

“I I I know, but why, what else did it s s say.” Tara asked her voice still shaking.

“It said I must never use magic.” Willow said. “It was using the memory of Tara to get me to stop using magic or to kill myself.”

Tara held Willow tight; she was still frightened at what had happened. The creature obviously didn’t expect to see her with Willow. She looked back up to where Cassie had vanished, a million thoughts running through her mind.

“Willow?” She whispered softly.

Willow pulled away from her for a moment and looked deep into Tara’s blue eyes. “Yes Tara?”

“I I I I think it’s scared of you?” She said. “Willow, I I I really think it’s worried about your power.”

Willow looked puzzled. “Why do you say that?”

Tara managed a weak smile. “I I I think it’s because you m m might be able to hurt it.”

“You think so?”

Tara nodded. “Why else would it want you dead.”

Willow managed to return the smile, Tara was right why else would it get her to hurt herself. She wiped her eyes and gave the blonde a hug. “Oh goddess Tara, I am such a doofus.”

“No you’re not.” Tara said.

Willow looked into Tara’s eyes and once again she felt a warm fuzzy glow all over. What had the demon said though about her being back, surely that was impossible Tara died in her arms, this girl wasn’t her Tara. Yet looking deep into her eyes she could almost feel it was her Tara looking back at her.

Tara could see the distant look in Willow’s eyes; she cocked her head to one side. “Willow?”

Willow smiled back at the young blonde in front of her. “Sorry Tara, I was thinking.”

“A a are you sure your ok?” Tara asked her again.

“I will be.” Willow said smiling. “Come on sweetie, we need to find Buffy.”

Willow leaned in and gave her a little kiss on the cheek. “I guess I owe you for what you said about it being scared of me; I guess with you here as well that means big trouble for what ever the hell it was.” Willow said. “I wonder why it was so scared of you too, what did it mean they sent you, something about a game or I don’t know, Tara it means your important to.”

Tara looked a little puzzled. “I don’t know Willow, I I mean I’m nothing like you, you have an amazing power, and I don’t have anything like your level.” She said looking away for a moment.

Willow smiled and gently cupped her face. “You do Tara, believe me you do, I know you said that you would help me with my magic, but couldn’t we work together?”

Tara smiled. “I’d like that.”

Willow released Tara and she stood up, Tara too got to her feet. They both looked to the spot where the ghost or creature had disappeared. She took Tara’s hand. “Let’s get back and see Buffy, we have to figure out what is happening, I just hope everyone else is ok.”

Dibby dib dib dibs.

Interesting take on the Library scene with Tara there -

I *have* wondered how the magic would have gone/progressed if Tara were there to help Willow.

I imagine Willow would still be real scared - but Tara has skills and I sure would have liked to have seen *her* strengths explored.

I'm hoping you have a little of that in store for us.

Plus some good Willow & Tara lovin'!
