Songs that freak you out

Postby Emms » Sat Jan 28, 2006 9:28 am

I just had to start a thread for this... if there already is a thread for this topic, Mods...please feel free to delete as necessary.

I was in my car last night and the song Hotel California by the Eagles came on....and I was all...freaked out.

So, what songs freak you out?

Oh, cool thread :)

Most freaky songs don't freak you out until you actually pay attention to the lyrics.

I have a couple that I can think of off the top of my head...

Delila by Tom Jones
Mmmm (I think that's what it was called) by Crash Test Dummies

& when I was little, most songs by Meatloaf freaked me out too.

To me what freaks me out is not the song so much but when people choose to play a song at their wedding. Like "I will always Love You." To me, that song is about how the singer will always love you but they aren't going to be together. So why play it at a wedding? I'll have to think about others like that.

I think Closer, by Nine Inch Nails. I mean, c'mon "I wanna fuck you like an animal, I wanna feel you from the inside"? At least disturbing.

I was asked to cut a wedding video for this song. It was horrible.

You should have put in a few frames of Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, invisible to the watching eye but visible frame by frame. Heh. Or used the Bonnie Tyler version.

Further to Debra's post: I recently heard of a wedding where the couple requested Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl." Not so bad, you'd think, except that the bride had blue eyes.

Songs that freak me out: some lyrics by my beloved Beatles. Stuff that I grew up listening to, then one day realized what they were actually saying. Particularly, "You can't do that" and the truly horrible "Run for your life." Hard to believe it's from Lennon & McCartney.

Every Breath You Take by The Police - talk about a Stalkers Anthem! Urghh, gives me the shivers every time I hear it - especially when it gets voted near the top of those lists of the world's favourite love songs!

Candleshoe - I completely agree about Every Breath You Take, definitely a stalker-y song.

Oh & also, House of the Rising Sun (I think it's that one anyway), I don't remember who sings it, but I've never listened to it all the way through 'cos it just sounds so creepy.

Yeah - House of the Rising Sun (by The Animals I believe) is actually about a brothel, an odd topic for a song....

"Firestarter" by Prodigy, especially along with the video. And there's this song by Aphex Twin called "Come to Daddy" that has a really creepy sound and video with scary children with big heads running around.
As one, they turn to the soda machine. It flies back into the door like a cannonball. Willow looks at it, at Tara. She doesn't let go of her hand.

You wanna hear a really creepy song?

Check out Esther by Phish....yikes....lines like "he said little girl, you can peel off my socks and chop off my legs if you want to, but I'd rather you take this old bucket from me..." and it just gets weirder and weirder from there

How about "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger. I love the song, but it's just weird. With lyrics like,

Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee
God damn you

I'm not sick but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cuz I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

Of course, I really enjoy songs with freaky lyrics for some reason. Maybe it's because they do make me think.

And MKBOY, I agree about Hotel California. It was one of the first songs that I remember freaking out over when I was a teenager. It also happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Another song from my youth that I used to listen to over and over again that blew my mind was "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.

There's a song that the Nields did that is called "I Know What Kind of Love This Is" and it really wigs me out. It's about, I guess, a teenage girl who decides (I guess?) to have sex with this guy while she's in high school and her dealing with the aftermath. It's kind of hazy to me how much deciding she actually did, to tell the truth. The lyrics especially for that part freak me out. A sample:

The man in black said, "You won't mind
It'll be over before you know it
You can pretend that you are blind
If it will help you to get over it"
In my parents' bed
Pretending I am dead
Remember every word he said

ETA: Another song that freaks me out is "Father Figure" by George Michael. Can we all say ISSUES?

Ugh! I totally agree about "Father Figure" after 18 years that song STILL wigs me out when I hear it.

There is a Milli Vanilli song that freaks me out, not because of the song, but because of the context in which I heard it years ago.

I had just finished watching "Sleepaway Camp", the gawd-awful C-movie horror flick. I think I was probably 12 at the time. Just after the end of the movie where you discover that the killer who you thought was a girl, really isn't (you find this out in explicit detail, mind you), I shut the TV off and turned the stereo on. "Baby, Don't Forget My Number" was playing and for some reason, any time since, if I ever hear that song, I shudder because all I think of is that last scene of the movie.

Oh, I thought of another one...

Where the Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue (although I'm sure that someone else released it before them), & if the song's not freaky enough, have you seen the video? *shudders*

It's not a song, it's a bedtime prayer but...

"Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take."

If I'd heard that as I child, I'd never go to sleep. First off, the Lord keeps your soul while you're alseep? Second, there's a random chance you will die before you wake? Scary!

the truly horrible "Run for your life." Hard to believe it's from Lennon & McCartney.

Yeah, that's the first one which came to my mind, too. Another would be (interesting to see various our ages emerge in this thread!) "Don't Fear the Reaper": cheery little song about death! (suicide?)

In the area of "disgusting wedding songs", to me, nothing tops "The Wedding Song". How does it go? Something like

[blockquote]woman draws her life from man
And gives it back again.

. . . and there is loooooooove.
[/blockquote]

:::barf!:::

GG But I always thought "Hotel California" was kinda kewl. Maybe you have to be a Native Californian! :lol Out

Thriller by Michael Jackson. It's not so much the song, but I was about five when I first saw the video and the part where he changes into a warewolf and turns to the woman whilst shouting 'go away'..... I think it's safe to say it left me with an unpleasent memory. Terrified = not good.

But, the way Michael Jackson looks now? I think I prefere the wolfy!

i'm with sally on that one. i am a massive nields-head. they're my all-time favorite band and can usually do no wrong in my book (i won't say that i chose law school near northamtpon for them but you could assume that and i wouldn't argue) - but that song is uber creepy and i never put it on a mix. in recent years they have changed the words from "the man in black" to the "girls in back" when they perform it live. doesn't change the creep factor once you've heard the original.

the song that probably freaks me out the most is by korn. i think it might be called "got the life" or something. that dude makes some wicked creepy vocies and noises. it reminds me of posession or something (in a demonic kind of way, not a sarah mclachlan kind of way) and i've had a freaky nightmare or two after hearing it. i just say NO to korn.

Well, I found another song that freaks me out. It's called Passage by Vienna Teng, and I will give you the lyrics in a moment.

You have to imagine a haunting melody, a beautiful voice, and no accompanying instruments. Just these words coming out of the car stereo:

"I died in a car crash, two days ago..."

and so it goes on, though the years, telling us how her family is coping. It freaked me out, and then it made me slow down to under the speed limit....

So a good freak, and I can thoroughly recommend the rest of her album - she's a really talented lady.

The fact that he not only mentions Bin Laden but finds a word to rhyme with it is enough to send shivers down my spine.

Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles

This verse always gave me the creeps...

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

Speaking of creepy children't songs, how about "Hush, Little Baby?"

First of all, what does a baby need with a mockingbird or any of that other crap, for that matter? A cart and bull?!? And what is the child being taught - that if something doesn't work the way we want it to we just toss it out and buy something else?

Then there's "My Humps" by the Black-Eyed Peas. That song is so bad it freaks me out. It sounds like it was written by a 4-year old. Here are some sample lyrics:

"What you gonna do with all that junk?
All that junk inside that trunk?
I’m a get, get, get, get, you drunk,
Get you love drunk off my hump.

What u gon’ do with all that ass?
All that ass inside them jeans?
I’m a make, make, make, make you scream
Make u scream, make you scream.
Cause of my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump.
My hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely lady lumps, check it out! "

"and mix your milk wit my cocoa puff,
Milky, milky cocoa,
Mix your milk with my cocoa puff, milky, milky riiiiiiight"

"My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump,
My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump.
My lovely lady lumps (x3)
In the back and in the front."

"What you gon’ do with all that breast?
All that breast inside that shirt?
I’ma make, make, make, make you work
Make you work, work, make you work"

I didn't mean to post so many lyrics - it's just they're so funny I couldn't decide what to leave out. This is the crudest description of the female anatomy I've ever come across. And the part with the milk and cocoa puffs is truly frightening.

As part of a college assignment, I'm required to write a song, lyrically referring to symbolism, and Carl Jung's theories, involving the 'Divine Number 1.618' within the construction of the song, in the style of my chosen artist (Alanis Morissette), and with a similar feel to Pink Floyd's 'Breathe'.

First off. WTF? Second off... I just listened to that song and it gave me the major willies. That is one WEIRD track.
