For The Love of Death

Postby Fallen Dove » Tue Jul 26, 2005 6:45 pm

Hello!

Name's Raven, but my mates usually call me Rae. I decided to try my luck and post a fanfic here. I'm not exactly an expert at this, but see if you like it.
Title: For The Love of Death
Author's name: Fallen Dove, Raven
Email Address: fallendove@hotmail.com
Rating: PG-13 at most
Disclaimer: This fanfic set on Season 5, it may also contain spoilers from Season 3 and 4. This is a cross with the universe of the bookseries Incarnations of Immortality, mostly the first book, On a Pale Horse. I own neither universe, I'm just borrowing them.
Feedback: Please, I'd love some!
Summary: For eons the office holder of Death has had a peaceful existence, but when the Fates her assign a special mission Death will find herself back into a world she thought she'd never see outside her office.
Notes: I'd like to thank my best mate and beta reader, Jaina. Thanks for the support and occasional kick in the arse, girly!

Prologue – A Mission for Death

Her eyes explored the large room. Over in the corner there was a young woman spinning threads with a distaff. She carefully selected and prepared the thread with the ability obtained from years upon years of experience. Another woman, this one of middle-age, sat at a very large loom in the center of the room. The middle-aged woman at the loom was weaving a tapestry so extensive and intricate that it stretched beyond the scope of a normal person's vision. There was no definable theme to the tapestry, but looking upon it one would marvel at the mysterious beauty of the Tapestry of Life.

The young woman walked across the room and offered a newly spun thread to the weaver. The weaver took this thread and began to weave it into the tapestry by hand, loving fingers coaxing the wild thread into the Tapestry. The threads in the Tapestry were of the most varied forms and colors. Most flowed in even braids, as if following a planned design. Others, a small minority, seemed wild and untamed. They were frayed in places, intertwined and tangled in the path of others in seemingly unpredictable patterns.

She turned around and saw an ancient woman emerge from the darkness beyond, a pair of shears in her hands. She watched as the weaver held a thread tight and the ancient woman snipped it. Even after several eons in her office, the snipping of a Thread brought tears to her eyes, for it signified the end of another life.

The three women finally turned their attention to her, as if just noticing her presence. She knew it to be wrong, however. They were aware of her the moment she entered the Tapestry Room. She smiled at the three aspects of Fate, her eyes looking beyond the mask of their office.

Clotho, The Spinner, was no older than twenty. She grinned playfully and her pale, almost white blonde hair seemed to shine in darkened room. Lachesis, the Weaver, was in fact just a tad older than her younger sister, with beautiful features and chestnut colored hair pulled in a long braid. The oldest, Atropos, was in her early thirties and her raven hair reached her waist in rich waves. All of them, however, had a common feature: eyes of the lightest shade of brown that displayed knowledge beyond Time itself.

“Hello, Death.” greeted Atropos, by far the most serious of the trio.

“We were expecting you.” added Clotho.

She raised an eyebrow. “Obviously, since you were the ones that called me here in the first place.”

“Ruin the cryptic greeting, will you? You’re no fun, Death.” pouted Clotho.

Death grinned, winking at the youngest Fate. She then turned to Atropos.

“This isn’t a social call, is it?”

“No, it isn’t.” Atropos waved her hand and suddenly they found themselves in spacious living room with comfortable-looking leather couches and a beautiful granite fireplace. A tea set appeared on the coffee table and Atropos offered Death a steaming mug.

“Thanks.” Death sniffed the liquid in her mug and took a sip, humming in satisfaction at the taste. “Hmm… This must be serious if you’re serving me mocha.”

“It is.” Lachesis sipped at her green tea.

“We need a favor.” Clotho blurted.

Death paused, her eyes surveying three sisters from under her hood. She took another sip and set her mug on the table. “Spill.”

Atropos cleared her throat and explained the situation.

“Let me get this straight,” said Death after a moment of stunned silence. “You want me go live among the mortals to protect a single girl from a trans-dimensional beast?”

“Pretty much.” Clotho gave her a sheepish girl.

“You do know it’s been several centuries since I last had human contact outside the office, don’t you?”

“We can give you knowledge of this time, you won’t have any problems fitting in.” said Lachesis.

“And what am I supposed to do? I can’t bloody well come to her and say ‘Hello, you’re a powerful mystical being and I’m here to protect you from a beast of indefinable evil. Who am I? I’m just you’re friendly neighborhood Death Incarnate. And a grand day for you too!’”

“You’ve been reading those comic books again.” chided Atropos, a teasing smile on her lips.

Death shrugged. “Purgatory News just ain’t any fun.”

“So, you’ll do it then?” asked Lachesis anxiously.

“What about the office?”

Atropos smiled innocently. “You won’t be needed for the time being, Death.”

Death narrowed her eyes. “You’ve been tweaking the Tapestry, haven’t you, you meddling old woman?”

Atropos gave her a look as if to say ‘who me?’.

Clotho and Lachesis laughed and even Death had to admit the humor in the situation.

“This is pretty important, huh?” asked Death, quickly sobering up.

Atropos nodded. “This beast could severely disrupt the Balance, Death.”

“Even Lucy is worried and you know she usually doesn’t get involved in human affairs.” added Lachesis, smiling ruefully.

“Why me, though?” asked Death, but she already knew the answer.

“None of the other Incarnates can interfere, you know that. You’re the only one of us that acts in direct contact with the humans, death is what you do. You preventing one death wouldn’t be much interference.”

Death sighed, conceding to the point. “Bloody rules.”

The Fates laughed, all too familiar with those rules.

“So I just have to live among them for a while and keep the girl from getting killed?”

“Yep.”

“Bugger. Oh alright, but remember, you owe me big for this.” Death rose, taking her scythe from its place against the couch.

“Farewell, Fates.”

And the Incarnate of Death vanished from the Hall of the Fates.

For The Love of Death - Updating

Postby Fallen Dove » Wed Jul 27, 2005 8:02 am

Chapter One – Preparing

She walked into the Purgatory main building. It was a structure of red bricks, with green vines climbing walls. The main entrance was unguarded and the electronic doors slid open as she stepped in.

“Hey, Death!” smiled the pretty secretary at the front desk.

“How is afterlife treating you, Janine?” asked the Incarnate.

“Great! But you’ve been giving us a lot of work here, you know!”

Death shrugged, her grin hidden by her hood. “I’ll leave you to your work then.”

She walked down the hall, around corners and into a modern scientific laboratory. The laboratory was currently unoccupied, which suited Death just fine as she preferred to work without pointless interruptions – something Purgatory employees were notoriously good at. She seated herself before a computer terminal. There was no particular brand name, but that was to be expected. It had a standard typewriter keyboard and assorted extra function buttons. She punched ON and the screen illuminated.

GREETINGS, DEATH. HOW MAY I BE OF SERVICE?

Death grinned as the words appeared on the screen. She loved these new AI systems. She started typing.

GREETINGS, SYSTEM. I NEED INFORMATION ON DAWN SUMMERS, HUMAN FORM OF THE MYSTICAL KEY. CAN YOU HANDLE THAT?

CERTAINLY, DEATH.

She waited while the machine processed her request. It didn’t take long.

STANDARD PROFILE INFORMATION

NAME: DAWN SUMMERS
AGE: 16 PHYSICAL EARTHILY YEARS
PLACE OF RESIDENCE: SUNNYDALE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
ADRESS: 1630 REVELLO DRIVE
FAMILY MEMBERS: JOYCE SUMMERS (MOTHER - DECEASED, HEAVEN BOUND); HANK SUMMERS (FATHER); ELIZABETH A. SUMMERS (SISTER)
LEGAL GUARDIAN: ELIZABETH A. SUMMERS

Death paused at this. Elizabeth Summers? Surely not that Elizabeth Summers. Just to make sure, she typed.

SYSTEM, I WANT THE PROFILE OF DAWN’S GUARDIAN, ELIZABETH SUMMERS.

The System processed her request and sure enough, her suspicions were confirmed.

STANDARD PROFILE INFORMATION

NAME: ELIZABETH ANNE SUMMERS
AGE: 20 EARTHLY YEARS
PLACE OF RESIDENCE: SUNNYDALE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
ADDRESS: 1630 REVELLO DRIVE
FAMILY MEMBERS: JOYCE SUMMERS (MOTHER - DECEASED, HEAVEN BOUND); HANK SUMMERS (FATHER); DAWN SUMMERS (SISTER)
OCCUPATION: UNIVERSITY STUDENT, SLAYER

“Hellfire!” Death swore. “Why didn’t they tell me she’s living with the bloody Slayer? How am I supposed to do this with a Slayer breathing down on my neck? Just bloody marvelous, I’m going to kill Atropos for this.”

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT SLAYERS?

SLAYERS

IN EVERY GENERATION, THERE IS A CHOSEN ONE. SHE ALONE WILL STAND AGAINST THE VAMPIRES, THE DEMONS, AND THE FORCES OF DARKNESS. SHE IS THE SLAYER.

INTO EVERY GENERATION, A SLAYER IS BORN. ONE GIRL IN ALL THE WORLD, A CHOSEN ONE, ONE WITH THE STRENGTH AND SKILL TO HUNT THE VAMPIRES, TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THEIR EVIL WAYS, TO CEASE THEIR DESTRUCTIVE MANNERS, TO PREVENT THE END OF THE WORLD. WHEN ONE SLAYER DIES, THE NEXT ONE IS CALLED.

THE SLAYER IS PREPARED BY THE WATCHER. ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING ALLOWS THE SLAYER TO FOCUS ON AND FULLY RESPECT HER SACRED DUTY.

SLAYERS ALSO NEED TO FOCUS TO SENSE THE PRESENCE OF A VAMPIRE. BY REACHING OUT WITH HER MIND AND ALLOWING THE ENERGY TO WASH OVER HER, SHE WILL HONE HER SENSES AND LITERALLY FEEL AN UNDESCRIBABLE NATURAL REACTION TO THE UNNATURALNESS OF THE VAMPIRES. OTHER SIGNS THAT VAMPIRE ACTIVITY IS RISING OR THAT A DEMONIC EVENT IS APPROACHING INCLUDE RECURRING AND SOMETIMES PROPHETIC NIGHTMARES.

THE SLAYER POSSESSES INNATE STRENGTHS. PHYSICALLY, HER STRENGTH AND STAMINA PROVIDE HER WITH A DEFENSE SO SHE CAN BE CONFIDENT FIGHTING AGAINST MORE THAN ONE FOE AT A TIME. MENTALLY, SHE TYPICALLY USES QUICK WIT TO DISTRACT HER ENEMIES. EMOTIONALLY, HER COURAGE AND INNER STRENGTH WILL ALLOW HER TO RISE TO THE OCCASION IN HONOR OF HER DUTY, EVEN WHEN HER HEART ISN'T FULLY IN IT. FOR SHE IS THE SLAYER, AND BEING SUCH ENTAILS CERTAIN SACRIFICES.

CURRENT SLAYER: FAITH BLACK

Death stared. Faith Black? Who the hell is Faith Black? What about Elizabeth Summers?

ISN’T ELIZABETH SUMMERS THE SLAYER?

NEGATIVE. ELIZABETH SUMMERS IS A SLAYER.

Death frowned, confused.

TELL ME HOW FAITH BLACK BECAME THE CURRENT SLAYER

SLAYER ELIZABETH SUMMERS DIED IN BATTLE WITH A VAMPIRE KNOWN AS THE MASTER. SHE SUFFERED DROWNING AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS WAS BROUGHT BACK THROUGH CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION. SLAYER KENDRA YOUNG WAS CALLED AND SUBSEQUENTLY KILLED BY THE VAMPIRE DRUSILLA. CONSEQUENTIALLY, FAITH BLACK WAS CALLED.

Just what I needed. Prophecies with loopholes. And in this bloody bureaucracy it will take eons for that to be fixed, if ever. Death tapped her chin, trying to think of a solution to her current dilemma.

SHOW ME THE PROFILE OF SLAYER FAITH BLACK

STANDARD PROFILE INFORMATION

NAME: FAITH BLACK
AGE: 18 EARTHLY YEARS
PLACE OF RESIDENCE: LOS ANGELES STATE PRISON, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Death raised both eyebrow’s at this. Whoa. A Slayer in prison? That’s a new one.

WHAT ARE HER CHARGES?

MANSLAUGHTER, FIRST DEGREE MURDER, ASSALT, THEFT.

Death gave a low whistle. It was unheard of, a Slayer committing so many crimes. In her experience as an Incarnate, she knew there was something deeper going on with this Slayer.

CHANCES AT REDEMPTION?

87.8% CHANCE

Death nodded. That was a good chance. It meant that the Slayer was innately good and an external factor had caused her descent into darkness. I hate it when lower beings influence people like that. I’ll have to have a talk with Lucy about her minions intervening like that. And suddenly, Death had an epiphany. A slow smile crossed her face. Why not?

SYSTEM, PRINT OUT THE PROFILES OF DAWN SUMMERS, ELIZABETH SUMMERS AND FAITH BLACK.

CERTAINLY, DEATH.

In a few minutes the profiles were ready and Death put them in her cloak’s internal pocket. She would study them later.

THANK YOU, SYSTEM.

ANYTIME, DEATH.

Death smiled and hit the OFF button. Awfully polite systems. She exited the laboratory and headed for the Department of Living Affairs.

“‘ello, Death. Been a long time.” greeted the Head of the Department, appearing beside her the moment she entered the Department.

“Hey, Andrew. It’s been a busy couple of centuries.”

“Indeed.” Andrew smiled politely. “What can I do for you?”

“Just a few things, actually. I’ll be spending sometime on Earth doing a favor for the Fates, so I’ll be needing an identity.”

Andrew nodded. “Of course. Are there any specific details?”

“I’ll be based on Sunnydale, California, USA. I’ll also need a job and a place to live, preferably close to the High School.”

Andrew raised an eyebrow at the choice of local. The Hellmouth was a well known place among the dead. Of course, he didn’t comment on it. “Do you have a name in mind?”

Death paused, thinking about it. Might as well. “Do you still have the records from my Earthily lifetime?”

“Certainly.”

“So use that name. You can choose any surname, I don’t care about that.”

Andrew nodded, noting the request on a pad that suddenly appeared in his hands. “Anything else?”

“Yes, arrange for Faith Black to be released from Los Angeles State Prison, will you?” said Death, studying Andrew’s reaction.

If Andrew was surprised at her unusual request, he didn’t show it. But then, she expected that. Andrew worked at the Purgatory for a few centuries and was already well schooled into the Purgatory policy of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’.

“It will be done immediately.”

“Thanks, Andrew. I’ll see you around.”

That said, Death left the Department and the building after waving goodbye to Janine. Walking across the lush green field, she spotted Mortis grazing under a large ginkgo tree.

“Come on, boy! We have to go!” she called out and the horse obediently trotted over to her, bridle and saddle automatically appearing on his previously bare back.

Death vaulted herself on top of the Deathsteed, a hand stroking through his soft, pristine white mane. Her scythe, having no use at the moment, disappeared from her hand, ready to be called back anytime. She usually only had her scythe when appearing in public, but riding with it could be a tad bothersome.

She glanced at her watch and, as expected, it was stopped. That meant the Fates were true to their word and she wouldn’t have any clients during her new mission.

“Let’s go, Mortis. Our next stop is Los Angeles State Prison.”

The horse made an acquiescent nicker and took off, prancing once more into the blue sky.

Thanks to those that left feedback, I expect the next chapter won't take long to write down.

This is great! :bounce

I'm assuming that some of the afterlife stuff (Death, the Fates, etc...) came from the Incarnations of Immortality? I will have to read that... Either way, though, it is a GREAT idea to do a fic with this world and the buffyverse. And season 5 is a great time to do it! I'm so excited! :applause

“Ruin the cryptic greeting, will you? You’re no fun, Death.” pouted Clotho.

Lol! I love how Death is a woman, and funny too! When I think of Death, it's always either really scary, or the image that the Monty Python painted in The Meaning of Life. But I like this one the best.

“Do you still have the records from my Earthily lifetime?”

Death was alive at one point? Great!!! I wonder who she'll be... I'm thinking people from season 5 - um, Ben? But then I'm thinking, I'm pretty sure this will be a different season 5, so Death could be anyone. What if Death was the soul of someone who is a vampire in the Buffyverse? Then we would have two of that person - one vamp and one death incarnate. That would be great.

Mortis. Great name. :-D

For The Love of Death - Update

Postby Fallen Dove » Thu Jul 28, 2005 10:48 am

Everyone is trying to guess Death's identity, I feel really satisfied that no one's got it right yet. I'm dropping tiny hints here and there, I want to see who will be the first to guess it right. Oh yeah, keep in mind that this is an Alternate Universe, I'm making some changes on both the Buffyverse and the Incarnates'. Thank you everyone who took the time to leave me feedback, it's greatly appreciated. :bow I'll give individual replies later when I have more time.

Onto the update now, enjoy!

Chapter Two – Faith

Mortis landed on the rooftop of the prison complex. Death looked at the sky. The moon would soon come. She dismounted.

“Stay near, will you?”

The horse bobbed his head up and down. She smiled and patted his neck.

“Good boy.”

She looked down at the building, extending her senses. Death looked for the soul of a Slayer in the area. Having been on the presence of many Slayers, it was a relatively easy task. Like all mystical beings, Slayers had a different feel to their presence. It was a subtle difference that not many would notice, but she had experience to spare.

There you are. Death adjusted her hood and, with a parting wave to Mortis, phased through the roof and into the building. Letting her senses guide her, she walked through corridors, passing patrolling guards and inmates until she reached the cell she was searching for.

A dark-haired woman in an unflattering prison uniform was lying in the uncomfortable-looking single bunk, hands behind her head as she stared at the gray ceiling. Belying her relaxed pose, Death could feel the nervous energy exuded by the young woman.

Faith was obviously restless, that much was obvious. Such a free spirit… She doesn’t belong here. Death mused. She isn’t meant to be caged like this. What she didn’t understand, was why she simply didn’t escape. She had the means to, no human could ever match a Slayer’s fighting prowess. So what was holding her back?

Death phased into the cell and leaned against the bars, waiting for her presence to be noticed. It didn’t take long. Faith looked up and saw the figure garbed in non-reflective black with a hood shrouding her head. A bald, bony skull looked eyelessly at her. In pure reflex, she jumped from the bunk and dropped into a fighting stance.

The Incarnate watched, amused and impressed. Faith’s whole soul seemed to sing, the Slayer in her begging for action. I wonder if she’ll attack me?

“Who the hell are you?” Faith asked harshly.

“I’m not a threat, Slayer. You know that.” Death stated simply.

Faith concentrated and nodded. She didn’t feel like a vampire or even a demon. “What are you?”

Death chuckled. “I’m Death.”

“What? Is this some kind of Halloween joke?” Faith looked at her incredulously. “You’re Death?”

“Death, Thanatos, The Grim Reaper, The Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, whatever you prefer. Well, in my case it would be Horsewoman, but you get my meaning.” Death explained breezily.

Death saw as comprehension dawned on the Slayer and her eyes widened. Surprisingly, she tensed even more and gritted her teeth, as if readying herself for a fight. Not the usual reaction. Most of the clients that actually saw her reacted with fear, despair or even resignation. Interesting.

“So you’ve come to get me? Well, I won’t go down without a fight.” Faith said defiantly, raising her fists.

“Oh, I don’t doubt it. But I’ve not come for you, at least not like that.”

Faith frowned. “You’re not here to kill me then?”

“Death does not kill.” she stated with a hard edge on her voice. “I merely take the souls of the dying, the problematic ones, so they won’t be lost and wandering forever inchoate. And in case you didn’t notice, you’re not dying.”

Faith nodded slightly, slowly dropping her fists to her sides. “So… Why are you here?”

“To put it simply, I want your help.”

“Huh?” Faith said, confused. “Help? How am I going to help you?”

“Well, you see, any time now a guard will come here with orders to free you. You’ll be free to do as you please with a clean slate.”

“What?! You released me? Why?!” Faith glared.

“You mean you actually enjoy it here?” Death made an encompassing gesture to the cell.

“No! Yes, no, I… This is where I belong.” Faith muttered.

“No, it most certainly isn’t.” Death countered. “You don’t belong in a cage.”

“What do you know?!” Faith said angrily. “I’m evil! This is my place.”

“No, it isn’t.” Death said softly. “I know evil, Faith, and trust me, you’re not it.”

Faith clenched her fists, staring at some point behind Death.

“Why are you here, Faith?” asked Death, her voice gentle. “You hate it here, you want to be free. You can escape, no one here could stop you. Why do you insist in remaining incarcerated?”

“B told me… She told me it was the only way I could make it up to her.” Faith whispered, looking down.

“B?” Death cocked her head curiously.

“Buffy.” Faith clarified.

Buffy? What kind of name is that? Sounds like something one would call a dog.” Death muttered to herself. “Who is this Buffy?”

Faith stifled a smile, having heard the dog comment. “She’s the Slayer, the other one.”

“Oh.” Death nodded, understanding. “Elizabeth Summers.” She did a double take. “You mean she actually likes to be called Buffy? I’ll never understand you mortals!”

Faith chuckled amusedly. She too thought Buffy a very silly nickname.

“I didn’t know you knew each other.” Death commented lightly.

Something flashed in Faith’s eyes, but she closed them before Death could see what it was. “We were… friends, more or less. I did bad things, hurt her… She told me to turn myself in, to atone. So I did.”

“Atone? Do you think you’re atoning for anything here?” Death shook her head incredulously. “I know everything about redemption, Faith. And this is not the way to find it.”

Faith opened her mouth to answer, but nothing came out.

“The way to redeem yourself is to do good, Faith. What good are you doing copped up here?”

“I’m evil.” Faith muttered, looking away.

Death let out a mirthless chuckle. “Faith, look at me. I’m Death. I’ve been dealing with evil for longer than you can imagine! Hellfire, I know Evil personally. Trust me on this, you’re not evil. I can prove it to you, if you want.”

Faith looked up. “Prove? How?”

“With this.” Death took something from her pocked and showed it to Faith.

Two stones were flashing gently in her gloved hand. They were cabochons, half-rounded and well polished. One was a dull brown color, the other a dull yellow.

“What-“

“These are my soul stones.” Death interrupted. “They are instruments of my office. I use them to analyze the souls of my clients. The brown stone measures the evil in a soul, the yellow one measures the good. They help me determine which sphere the souls should be relegated.”

“Spheres?”

“Heaven and Hell. The terminology varies, of course, but these are easier to understand.”

“Oh.” Faith nodded, showing her understanding.

Death could feel Faith was still confused about the whole thing, but more thorough explanations would have to wait.

“Come here then.” Death called.

Faith approached cautiously, stopping before the Incarnate. Death took the brown stone and passed it over Faith’s body, following a pattern she couldn’t define. Faith swallowed, she was quite literally looking Death in the eye. She looked away from Death’s intense stare and directed her gaze to the stone. It was gradually darkening and by the time Death was finished it was almost black.

“See? This is the evil in your soul.” Death handed her the stone. It was heavy. “Quite a bit of guilt and sin in there, but not the worst I’ve come across. Evil weights down your soul.”

Faith bit her lip, catching her meaning.

Death brought up the yellow stone and repeated the process. As it picked her good aspects, it brightened, until at the end it was shining strongly, like a tiny moon.

“Now here is your good. See how bright it is? Much brighter than one as young as you would usually be.” Death held up the shining gem and Faith stared at it in amazement. Death deposited the stone on Faith’s hand.

“It’s so light.” Faith murmured.

“Yup.” Death agreed cheerfully and took the stones back. “Now for the verdict.”

Death put the two gems together. They clung to each other, as if magnetically attached and the line of their cleavage writhed into the configuration of the Yin-Yang. She let go of the merged stone. It hovered in mid air, as if balanced on something.

Faith watched, unconsciously holding her breath. The stone flashed. Then, slowly, it rose.

“What does that mean?” she asked quietly.

“That means, Faith, that the balance is marginally in favor of Heaven. This is the proof that even now the evil in your soul does not weight it down completely.”

Faith let her breath out; she had been more nervous than she had realized.

“How… How is it possible? What I did…”

“Faith, tell me something. How many vampires and demons have you killed so far?” Death asked seriously.

“Uh, I don’t know.”

“Dozens? Hundreds?”

Faith shrugged. “I guess.”

“And how many people do you think you saved by doing that, Faith?” Death asked gently.

“Oh.” Faith fell silent.

“So you see, Faith, you’re not evil. Your soul is tainted, but not enough to damn you. Every good deed lightens the burden, and every bad deed weights it down. Only you can change your fate. In the words of the poet William Henley: ‘It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll; I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.’” Death intoned. “Do you understand it now?”

Faith nodded. It was as if a huge weight was lifted from her shoulders. She felt hopeful now. “Why are you here, Death? Why are you telling me this?”

“That’s a good question, you know. It all started when the Fates gave me a mission.”

“The Fates? As in…”

“Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho, yes. Meddling hags, the three of them.” Death said with a fond smile that Faith couldn’t see behind the glamour of the hood. “They asked me to protect someone who is in great danger. You have to understand, we Incarnates have to follow certain rules, one of which prohibits us of interfering with the mortals. We can coax, give hints, but not directly interfere. So the fact that they actually asked me to interfere means it’s serious, very serious.”

“So isn’t you telling me all this against the rules?”

“Well, yes.” Death smiled sheepishly. “I’m not exactly supposed to tell anyone about my Incarnate office. I made an exception for you because I needed your trust. Only one person knowing won’t make much difference, I think.”

“So… Who is this person you have to protect?” Faith asked.

“Dawn Summers.” Death answered simply.

Faith paled. “Dawn? B’s kid sister?”

Death nodded. “So imagine my surprise when I found out there are two Slayers now. I admit I’m a tad outdated in theses aspects. So I figured, since one is already protecting Dawn, I could get the other to help me.”

“You want me to go back to Sunnydale?! B hates me, she’ll kill me!” Faith protested.

“Hate, I’ve found, is too strong a word.” Death commented. “But it’s your choice. You will be freed anyway.”

Faith frowned, thinking hard. On one hand she was terrified of meeting Buffy again, but on the other she’d always had a soft spot for the kid and didn’t want her to be hurt. Maybe I can help… Maybe B won’t hate me. Faith sighed.

“Alright, I’m in.”

Death grinned. “Grand!”

“I just have one question. How do you expect to gain their trust like that?” Faith smirked, looking her up and down.

“You don’t actually think I look like this all the time, do you?” Death put her hands on her hips, which made a comically interesting sight. “What you see is a mask, a mere illusion of my office. I was mortal once, you know? I’m not sure how long ago since time passes differently for an Incarnate. I still look like a normal human outside this uniform.”

“That is an uniform? Wicked ugly thing.” Faith shuddered.

“Yes, well, I can’t really do anything about it. While I am working I have to bear the visage of Death.” Death shrugged. “Bugger if I know who had the idea for this uniform. I think the Powers have a weird sense of humor.”

“So you’re going to be my Watcher, then? You’ve got the British thing down pat.”

Death tapped her chin thoughtfully. “You know what, that’s not a bad idea at all. But just between us, I’m not really British, I just like the accent. I think I’m from somewhere around Ireland.”

“You’re strange.” Faith shook her head.

“I prefer the term ‘quirky’, thank you very much.”

At that exact moment a guard approached the cell. Faith glanced between the guard and Death, a slightly panicky look on her face.

“Oh, don’t worry. She can’t see or hear me.” Death waved her off.

“Black!” barked the burly guard. “Gather your things, someone up there likes you.”

Faith fought down a grin as she put her few things inside a battered duffel bag. Half an hour and some paperwork later, Faith walked out the prison complex as a free woman. Faith let out a whoop, enjoying the feel of her newly acquired freedom. She’d missed that.

Death watched her amusedly. She looked around and, seeing no one in the near vicinity of the prison building, gave a low whistle. Mortis galloped down from the rooftop and stopped before his mistress.

“Whoa! That’s a frickin’ horse!” Faith exclaimed.

“Really, I hadn’t noticed.” said Death sarcastically. “‘Death rides a pale horse’, have you ever heard of that? This is Mortis.”

“Wicked cool! But wait, will I have to ride him?” Faith looked slightly alarmed.

Death chuckled. “I can teach you how to ride later, but no, that’s not necessary.”

Death pressed a button on Mortis’s saddle and suddenly in the place of the magnificent stallion there was a gleaming white Lexus RX400.

Faith blinked and stared at the car. “What… How…?”

Death smirked. “Mortis too has an office. His job is to provide transportation for the Incarnate of Death. He can turn into virtually any means of transportation. I usually prefer Mortis the horse, but this will do quite nicely.”

“Cooooool…”

Faith examined the sleek car. The license plate said MORTIS. There was also a bumper sticker: ‘DEATH IS NATURE’S WAY OF TELLING YOU TO SLOW DOWN’.

The Slayer looked at Death sideways. “You’re wicked weird, Death.”

“Quirky, Faith, quirky.” Death opened the passenger’s door. “After you.”

Faith entered the vehicle. It was an elegant and comfortable automobile. The upholstery was genuine leather and the metalwork was solid chrome. “Very impressive. So is this Deathcar, then?”

“Yup.” answered Death, climbing onto the plush driver’s seat.

“So, where to now? Deathcave?” Faith joked.

Death laughed. She turned the ignition key and the car roared into life. “Now we go to the Hellmouth.”

TBC…

Whew, this was longer than I had originally planned. 10 pages, I usually do 4-6. Well, I hope you liked it, I'm not sure I'm completely satisfied with this chapter. Feedback? :pray

Very interesting premise. I like it....very interesting, indeed.

I think Death is Tara...no, Death is Willow...Tara...Willow. Oh hell, I don't know.

Expect more from me with further updates. The more I read, the more my brain works and processes, and the more I have to say.

Thanks!

Hi Raven - Gotta say I'm loving this story so far. I can't ever remember reading one involving 'Death'. I think I'll have to read a bit more before guessing who death is. However, since I'm crap at Cluedo, I'll probably never work it out!

More please.

Yay! I love this, I love this, I love this!!! My kind of humor...

Well, in my case it would be Horsewoman, but you get my meaning.” Death explained breezily.

Ah, you gotta love it when Death has a sense of humor.

And again, this Death character is too much. A bumper sticker, ha! And she's all polite and lets Faith in the door.

“So, where to now? Deathcave?” Faith joked.

Death laughed. She turned the ignition key and the car roared into life. “Now we go to the Hellmouth.”

Lol! Punny, that is. Deathcave, Hellmouth, basically the same thing.

I'm still totally stumped on who Death is. I already know that you've gone off track from canon a little bit because Faith turned herslef in, so that pretty much means that Death could be anyone in the Buffyverse except Buffy, Joyce, Dawn, and Faith. Hmm... She does remind me of Tara. But if it acutally is someone who died a long time ago in the show, I'm guessing Hali (the vengance demon). But to tell you the truth, I wouldn't put more than $5 on either of those.

raven, i'm really enjoying your start here. i'd read the "incarnations" series a lonnnng time ago (like when the were written, however long that is) and enjoyed them but didn't think i remembered much. i'm suprised how much is coming back to me as i read this, and you're combining the elements very well. for instance using the soul stones on faith, perfect way to really showher she isn't evil. i've seen many fics where people try to convince faith of that, but never have seen it proven to her before. cool :) i'm looking forward to seeing how you develop this ~mary

Nice update! Well you got my brain working on who the heck Death is.. but my mind is telling me its Willow. Since there's the whole quirkyness. Am I right?
Tara: No, I understand. You have to be with the person you love.
Willow: I am.

Very interesting. Never read the Immortality series, though it seems to be the type of book I would have read when I was younger, so the concept isn't unfamiliar.

Death is certainly a jaded and cynical being, isn't she? Initially I thought Death is Spike, cos of the Britishisms. Of course Death is a she, and an MC in your story, last time I looked this is the KB not nautibitz. Plus the self-deprecation:
I’m not really British, I just like the accent. I think I’m from somewhere around Ireland

:lol interesting :hmm who could it be? Well done on the suspense btw!

I glad she
still look[s] like a normal human outside this uniform

Wow. It must be my month. My two most beloved fantasy/sci-fi literary series have been combined with my favorite television series. When I read the title "For the Love of Death," I thought, hmmm, could it be a play on... yes! it is!. (and of course the other I speak of is Naeryn's stay on Pern)

I like how you're twisting both worlds to make a new one and I'm looking forward to reading how Death plans on integrating herself into Sunnydale -- I wonder what her job will be...

(I also wonder if Lucy will be as "good" as Perry is in the series. The fact that Death seems to speak of her nonchalantly gives me great hope -- Perry's keen sense of the world and evolution made For The Love of Evil one of my favorite books in the series to re-read.)

Please keep it up!

Answering

Postby Fallen Dove » Fri Jul 29, 2005 11:48 pm

I'm sorry to say, no, this isn't an update *ducks flying tomatoes* HEY! I said sorry! *huffs* Ahem! Now on to the feedback answering:

GayNow: Interesting huh? Thanks, I always like it when I interest people, it's so... interesting! :grin I'll keep writing, you'll have much more fuel to your brain, don't worry.

caz: Hello there Caz! Death is always a good, polemic subject, I think. Be it a person (like an Incarnate) or the mere concept, Death generally gives an interesting and extensive range of topics to discuss. I intend to discuss some of them here in this fic, I'm philosophic that way. I hope I don't bore you to Death with my ramblings! :lol

watersong89: Thank you, Aly! Can I call you Aly? :wink I'm glad you liked my Death. I think death in general is so serious, so the Incarnate has to have a sense of humor else she'll break down, surely! You can speculate away on Death's identity, I gave some subtle hints, but I won't be telling for at least another chapter. One more hint for you: It's a character I removed completely from the Buffyverse, she's never existed there, has a different past and some of her personality is different as well (being Death will do that). Think, think, can you guess? :grin

meretricious: I'm glad it's all coming back to you. I worked hard on putting as much of the Incarnates' universe as I dared, I wanted it to be original, but at the same time give the people who had read the books a sense of deja vu. Glad it's working! And I love Faith. I don't think she was given enough credit on the show, so I'm going to pay homage to one of my favorite characters on my fic. Faith will get what she deserves! :bow

Amanda: You could be right, you could be wrong :hmm I'm not telling, you'll have to wait a bit more for the answer. :devil

watson: Watson! What an honor to have you feedbacking my fic! :bow I love your fics, you know? Common Areas and The Amazing Kitten Race are two of my absolute favorite fics! Bloody brilliant writing!

Death is certainly a jaded and cynical being, isn't she? Initially I thought Death is Spike, cos of the Britishisms. Of course Death is a she, and an MC in your story, last time I looked this is the KB not nautibitz. Plus the self-deprecation

You're quite right. Being Death did much to her way of looking at things. Think of her as a war veteran, for the lack of a better analogy. But still, she kept her humor, even if it's somewhat dark at times. It keeps her human.

dokkyo: Another fan of the Incarnate series! Brilliant! The Incarnates are one of my favorite series. I love the way it deals with magic, mythology, technology and faith. Piers Anthony is a God among us mortal ficwriters!

I like how you're twisting both worlds to make a new one and I'm looking forward to reading how Death plans on integrating herself into Sunnydale -- I wonder what her job will be...

I've re-read On a Pale Horse recently and that's what made me want to write this fic. I love Zane, he's a great bloke and a rather spiffy Death. I took some concepts and attitudes and rolled it up into one character: my Death. A woman, because Death as a woman is almost never done, though I do wonder why since the whole Original Sin having been caused by a woman and all... Death will have problems integrating, of course, lacking human contact outside the office for so long. Faith will help her there, as well as some friends she'll make along the way. And her job... Let's just say that Faith will laugh herself silly. :grin

I also wonder if Lucy will be as "good" as Perry is in the series. The fact that Death seems to speak of her nonchalantly gives me great hope -- Perry's keen sense of the world and evolution made For The Love of Evil one of my favorite books in the series to re-read

Lucy will appear somewhere along the way, but I'm still trying to decide how to make her. For The Love of Evil is my second favorite in the series and Perry is a delightful character. Maybe I'll base Lucy on him... or maybe not, the jury is still out on that.

Thanks everyone for the marvelous feedback, I hope to write a bit more this weekend, but Sunday I'm going out with my best mates, so I don't know how much I'll write. Rest assured that there will be an update sometime during the coming week.

I also think that it's Willow with the quirky and all that. Though the case could be made for Tara with the Horse and the Slayer entanglements would be more of a way of meeting Willow than Tara. I read On a Pale Horse and I love the ideas of humans as incarnations of immortality. It humanizes the concepts and make for a great point of view. Looking forward to see who is death and what it has to do with the key.

Ah! I'm so glad to have found this fic again. I just loved it the first time I read it. On a Pale Horse is one of my favorite books -- definitely the best of the Incarnations of Immortality series. If only Piers Anthony would keep his book series down to 4 or 5 volumes. I think they tend to peter out after book 6 or so. What's Xanth at now? 397? Does anyone still read it?

Anyway, your writing is really terrific. You're very true to the style and attitude of the original. Both originals, actually. Faith is... well, faithful to the character from Buffy, and the storyline and style are faithful to the Incarnations series. And you've added your own original touch as well. Excellent work.

I hope you elect to continue this story. It's really terrific and deserves to have an audience and be completed.

My vote for Death is Willow, BTW.

Thanks,

Jerri

Allright, OK, you guys have convinced me. What with the "quirky" and the horse-riding and also the non-willowish chumminess with Faith, I gotta change my vote to Tara.
