The internet is fraught with peril!

While the board was down for a few hours tonight, some of us were over at the old board, talking about stuff like Wicked, Ani Difranco, and whatever.

The internet is hugely important to me. It's both a social outlet and where most of my classes are for school. It would suck insane amounts of ass if I suddenly had no internet.

So, do y'all think we've become too dependent on the internet? What would you do without it?

I'd panic and panic, and then panic some more. Then my head would probably explode. And after that, I would collapse and (miraculously without my head), I would bawl like a baby.

Also, what are you doing this weekend? Cool stuff? Crap? Nothing? What, what? We want to know!

Happy weekend, Kittens!

As one of the lost and confused few who migrated to chat in hopes of commiserating with others, I will add my 2 cents to this thread.

What would I do without the internet?

I think I would die. Perhaps literally. And if I didn't actually die, I would probably become comatose. Seriously, the internet is my lifeline. There are some people in this world -- close close friends -- who I would not be able to contact again if the internet suddenly disappeared. So sad. So true.

As for the weekend, I'M GOING TO SEE WICKED!!!!! Yeah, okay...I'm a little excited. I've had my tickets for nearly 6 months and have been TRYING to wait patiently. And it's almost time! WOOT!

Other than that, I will be puttering around the internet...reading updates on Pens and leaving feedback novellas when appropriate. And trying to NOT let my family bug me so damned much. LOL

I love the internet, I can't imagine life without it. It would be like having no TV. I would be bored out of my mind. I have become so dependent on it, I don't even like to think what I'd do without it.

I would sorely miss keeping in touch with the friends I have made. I would miss the board horribly. There’s just so many uses, email, Instant Messaging, news, weather, music, ability to download shows or movies that you missed or can’t see where you live. The list is endless. It’s a major part of my life and without it, life would suck…literally.

As for the weekend, nothing, as usual. Except this time, in hot weather :happy

Ahh, I love the internets.

I would probably go insane if I were deprived of it for a substantial period of time. I'd miss my friends and the board terribly.

I am not doing anything interesting this weekend.

My life revolves around the internet. I have some classes I take online, I check email, grades, class schedules, bank statements, etc. Plus all the wonderful entertainment available on here, now that there's a huge chunk of shows on t.v. that suck. I'd go insane AND practically be rendered useless without the internet. Oh my, I don't even wanna think about not having it.

I was starting to freak out earlier when the board was down. Just like over on ezboard, everytime it was down some desperation would start to set in. I'd be like OMG! did it shut down? what happened to it? is it coming back? what am I gonna do now? The board's a big part of my life and I'd panic and go crazy if i couldn't check it.

I'm gonna go see Madagascar this weekend. I'll probably also go see a friend's band perform at one of the bars and play tennis.

As for the weekend, nothing, as usual. Except this time, in hot weather

Dude, now you are complaining about hot weather? You prefer that over whining about snow then? :D

Anyway, I was trying to remember how long it has been since I first went on the internet. I was still in med school. I think it was about 7 years ago. I was still computer retarded (more so than I am now) at the time. I used the student computers at the university hospital and I think DS9 and fanfic were the reason I finally tried it out and the one thing I was looking for at the time. A lot has changed since then. It´s the combination computer/internet I do not want to be without, I know they go hand in hand, but it is not just the internet I could not be without, it is the computer as well.

I can´t even imagine anymore ever having lived without it and not be bored senseless. I watched a lot more TV in those days I guess and read more books heh. What makes the internet so important to me is this board. I am sure I would not have been and be online so much if not for this place. It has helped me discover so much about the joys of the internet as a whole that I otherwise probably never would have learned. IM, chat (back when I used to go there), downloading great stuff and I would not have gone to the US twice if not for this board and the internet. I would not have met the people and made the friends I made here. The ones I had b.i. (before internet) are very nice, but they don´t live on the other side of the world. :p

It is hard to imagine now what it would have been like if I had never found this place or went online, but I am quite sure I do not want to be without the internet ever again. There is only so much working to fix your backyard you can do (this weekend) before you want to run upstairs and enjoy the soothing blue of this board.

Every morning I wake up and I go online. The last thing I do before going to bed is say goodnight to my chat buddy and turn off my computer. In between I do some work (if it's a weekday) or spend time with my gf (if it's the weekend), but most of my waking hours are spent in front of the computer.

It means a lot to me, partly because of where I live, I don't have many people I feel I have anything in common with. People I have a real connection with, are all the friends I made online. And if that sounds pathetically sad, it isn't, I revel in every single moment I spend with my online friends.

I simply can't imagine life without the internet. I do my grocery shopping, pay my bills, read the news, look up information and plan my vacation on the internet. I just came back from a trip and with the beauty of e-ticketing and online check-in, all I had to do was to turn up at the airport with my passport, how great is that?

I think that my reaction to internet deprivation depends on whether it's short or long term. If I know it's a short break (like if I go on vacation or have to stay overnight at friends') I can deal -- I'll watch tv or read a book (for a change) or even go to the gym :). If it's long term withdrawal, I'd go mad, seriously. I wouldn't know what to do with my time, and I'd be frantic, cos there are friends, like Car says, close close friends, I can ONLY get in touch with on the internet.

The first tab in my browser window is Pens, it's virtually glued there. Although I only delurked last November/December, I'm here all the time now. So when I woke up this morning and found out that the board was down I started to panic. Thank goodness for chat and the mods' quick response :clap .

As for the weekend, it's trying to catch up on some rest and get better cos I've been sick. I came back from my business trip on Friday bone tired, but to find that my gf has come over and made me soup. So for me it's Appreciate Life's Little Comforts weekend.

You turn off your computer?! Mine is never off. Well, while I'm here anyways. When I go home for vacation, that's when it gets tough. A couple of days, sometimes a week with no net! It's... well, hell, especially since it's really hot back home.
The worse thing that happened was ... 2 years ago. My pc died on me for 2 weeks or so. I was going insane! I finally had to read the Pens updates, so I had a friend of mine email them to me on one of my email accounts and I got online with the wap.
It was horrible! Hope that doesn't happen again.

I just want to thank the Mods for being super fast and extra smart yesterday in what I now refer to as "The crisis of 2005" hehe.

I too, practically live my life around the internet and I don't know what I would do, if it wasn't there anymore. Although, I suspect that I would go outside more and become less pale, subsequently. :-D

And yay, I'm still going to see Ani Difranco in September...but I talked to my wife about going with me, last night and she was like....no. :happy But that's okay... I'll just go by myself :-D *whispers* that just means that I'll be able to throw my panties on stage, guilt-free. :eyebrow (just kidding.... :glasses mostly...) :lol

okay...that's it for now.

Oh and Carleen... I hope you have a good time seeing "Wicked" I wish it was playing here, cause I'd be going too.

okay, later all.

If I had no internet, I'd go stupid. I use if for every little thing I need to know or have a question about. I mean, how to calculate a percentage, what makes a car run, the history of europe; I find it here. Not to mention my dose of fiction.

It's actually a very real question for me too because my partner interviewed yesterday for a job in Thailand, and not Bangkok or something major like that, so internet access may suddenly become less f a normal part of every day life for me. I think I ay freak out.

This weekend: loads of Carton Network, loads of fic, loads of studying, and loads of PS2-play. I'm alone this weekend, so I got nothing better to do than play. Poor me.

OMG! Do not even joke about the net going down! Hell on earth I tell you. The market would crash, the board would disappear, there would be mass hysteria and life would cease to exist as we know it. (Ok, the market crash was a little extreme)

I owe the internet a lot, I would not be where I am without it. I would not be unpacking the rest of my boxes in my new home without it. I would not be looking for work without it. I would not have gotten a hell of a discount for booking Penske online to move half way across the country without it. No board, RSS, up to the minute news (mostly) no slickdeals.net, jokes, film shorts and lord have mercy no iTunes!

Though, there are some things I would not miss about it, spam, identity theft, viruses and all the security holes in MS products. (Thank goodness for Mozilla)

However, if it was annihilated, I suppose I would get by. Let’s hope it never happens.

As for this weekend, I will be helping my overworked honey to meet some deadlines and unpacking all the aforementioned boxes. And baseball, cannot forget the baseball!

my work day consists mostly of 30second bursts of activity, followed by 5 or 7 minutes of just sitting here. how i made it thru these days without my laptop i have no idea. esp. when i'm stuck working a saturday like today, i've read 8 or so different papers, did a little shopping, im'd with 3 friends from completely different parts of the country, it's unthinkable for me now not to be on line at work. outside of work i can go for about a day, maybe two without internet before i start to go a little crazy. haven't tried going longer than that, don't think i want to either.
as far as the rest of this weekend goes, i've overextended myself socially this week already, and i'm looking forward to many many hours of near comatose sleep. as soon as i get out of work, that is :(

I can't imagine life without the internet. Which is strange, because when you think about it, the internet has been around for less than 20 years. I'm only 28, and I didn't really use the internet at all until my senior year of high school. How did we do even the simplest of things? I moved to Boston a few years ago to go to grad school, and without the internet I wouldn't have found roommates, a place to live, my school, or any of the million other details I needed to take care of. Crazy.

I am SO jealous of you Carleen. I have wanted to see Wicked for over a year. Are you seeing it on Broadway or on tour? Tell me all about it when you're back. I would have loved to see it on Broadway with the original cast. It's playing about four hours away from me most of the summer, and I'm hoping to get tickets.

As for tonight... anyone else watching the Tony Awards? 8 o'clock EST on CBS. Any Broadway fans? It's going to be fun!

Well, it happened...I got to see Wicked this weekend. I'm in awe...absolutely, stupifyingly in awe. If you all would indulge me, I'd like to provide you with some brief (or perhaps not so brief) thoughts about this amazing production.

First of all, let me give you some general information about this particular production. The production I saw this weekend was performed by the touring company. Chicago is the second stop on the tour (it came here from Toronto). As of right now, the tour is scheduled through September, 2006. You can check the touring schedule at the official Wicked tour website. If the tour is coming to your town, or a town near you, buy your tickets the SECOND they go on sale. This is a show NOT to be missed.

For those of you in the Chicagoland area, but were unable to see Wicked during the touring company's run, do not fret. On June 24, 2005, the sitting company for Wicked will begin it's open run. Chicago is the first city to land a permanent cast for this fantastic show. My prediction, Wicked will revitalize theatre in Chicago. Hell, it already has. Tickets have been on sale for the sitting company for a few weeks now...they are nearly sold out through the end of September.

Okay, some information about the theatre....

The Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre is located in downtown Chicago in the renovated Theatre district on West Randolph. The Cadillac Palace is right down the street (where The Lion King will soon be opening) and the historic Chicago Theatre is right around the corner on State Street. Appropriately enough, the world-famous and historical Marshall Fields building -- lit up in all it's green glory and hosting a Wicked window display -- is kitty-corner from the Oriental. West Randolph is decked out with Wicked banners hanging from the lamp posts and every bus and 'L' stairway has a Wicked sign prominently displayed. Obviously, Chicago is under Wicked's spell.

The Oriental Theatre is one of the many theatres in Chicago which has undergone renovation. It's a beautiful, yet relatively small, theatre. It opened in 1926 as a movie theatre and continued to show feature films and host concerts until the 1970s when the building fell into disrepair. It was added to the Federal National Registry of Historic Places in 1978 in hopes of saving the building but it continued to decay. In 1981, the building was closed to the public and was being considered as a site for new shopping center. Fortunately, in 1996 Livent, Inc. decided to restore the theatre to it's original grandeur and the theatre would be used specifically for musical theatre productions. In 1998, the restored theatre opened with the Chicago premier of Ragtime. (Information about the threatre found at Broadway in Chicago.)

On to the review of the production I saw last night.....

My mother, the loveable, wonderful, typically pain-in-the-ass woman that she is, bought me two tickets to see this show for my birthday. She told me to get the best seats possible and that I could invite whoever I wanted to join me. And since she is MY loveable, wonderful, typically pain-in-the-ass mother, I invited her. She was the one who introduced me to musicals in the first place, and I know it's because of her that I have my love of theatre. It pretty much goes without saying that, even though she kept trying to convince me that I should invite someone else, she was really excited about going to the theatre. I was excited for her.

We found our seats, which were located on the Dress Circle level on house left -- row KK, seats 1 & 3 (seating chart). We had the slightest of sightline obstructions, but really very nice seats. And, to give you an idea of how quickly the shows sold out, I bought those tickets 3 days after they went on sale...the show opened April 29th and June 4th was the soonest night I could get.

The preshow set design had a scrim that ran the length of the proscenium arch. On this scrim was a map detailing the various counties/countries/areas discussed in Gregory McGuire's novel (on which, Wicked was based). At the center, in shimmering green, was the Emerald City.

The lights in the theatre dimmed and Oz came to life! The opening chords of "No One Mourns the Wicked" sent shivers up and down my spine. They are reminiscent of the opening chords in The Phantom of the Opera. The cast burst onto the stage and the tale began. For obvious reasons, McGuire's tale was altered for the stage. McGuire's novel is really rather dark -- the beginning third of the novel tells the story of Elphaba's childhood (Elphaba is the Wicked Witch of the West, btw). On stage, this entire backstory is told in the opening song. The tale in Wicked truly begins as Elphaba and Glinda meet at Shizz University -- it is during that period that most of the story takes place.

As someone who read the novel, I have to say that I am pleased with how Winnie Holzman adapted the story for the stage. And Stephen Schwartz's music and lyrics worked wonderfully to compliment Holzman's retelling, to move the story along, and to provide character development. Additionally, Susan Hilferty's costumes were absolutely beautiful! They were colorful, they were detailed, they were functional. Every costume for Glinda bespoke the character's flirtatious, "it's all about me" demeanor. The costumes for Elphaba appropriately matched the character's tendency to stand out -- her green skin stood out against the black of her costumes, which, in turn, caused her to stand out against the colorful wardrobe of the students at Shizz and the citizens in the Emerald City.

The actors. What can I say about the actors other than "wow"? I admit that I was disappointed to see that Glinda and Madame Morrible would be played by understudies for the performance. I was so looking forward to seeing Carol Kane as Morrible. But, once the show started, I completely forgot that they were understudies. Katie Adams' portrayal of Glinda, while a bit reminiscent of Kristen Chenoweth in the originating role, was spot on. Adams easily brought out Glinda's bubbly, yet unwittingly, self-centered personality -- which is a rather appropriate description, since Glinda's mode of transportation is a bubble. At the same time, Adams was able to showcase Glinda's vulnerability when she found out that she couldn't always get what she wanted and her strength when she realized the treachery of the Wizard. Really, quite wonderful.

Stephanie Block's turn as Elphaba was tremendous! Having heard Idina Menzel's Tony Award winning performance on the soundtrack (unfortunately, I didn't get to NYC to see her on stage), I was afraid that Block may be tempted to go the way of Adams and mimic Menzel's performance. What a delight to find that Block made the role of Elphaba her own. And what a voice! I sat in rapture as I listened to her pine for the boy she never thought she could have in "I'm Not That Girl" just to come back and belt out the powerhouse Act 1 finale "Defying Gravity." This woman has already known success as the singing voice of Barbie and, more notably, opposite Hugh Jackman in the Broadway musical The Boy from Oz. I think we are going to be hearing a LOT more from her!

I was somewhat disappointed in Derrick Williams's portrayal of Fiyero -- the romantic lead. While I realize the character is meant to be a fun loving, live for the moment and don't worry about commitments kind of guy, I thought Williams was a little too "Rico Suave" for my tastes. Rather than naturally oozing Fiyero's innate sexuality, Williams seemed to be making too much of an effort. I picture him as more of a cabaret performer than a romantic lead in one of the best musicals of the last 50 years. Good-looking guy. Talented guy. Not right for the part.

David Garrison as the Wizard really did nothing for me. I think I'm biased on this point, however. I came into the show not really caring for Garrison's work. He is probably best known for his stint on "Married With Children," but is a veteran of the stage. Again, this may be my own bias, but I thought his performance was rather stiff and much of it was underplayed. Regardless of the fact that the Wizard is the villian in this show, I just didn't find the character likeable. I want to like the villian. This just didn't happen.

Okay...I just hit preview and I now realize that this review of Wicked is almost as long as McGuire's novel. So, in the interest of not boring you anymore, I will end it here.

I highly highly HIGHLY recommend seeing this show, buying the soundtrack, and reading the novel. Sooooo worth the time and the money spent. Run, don't walk, to a town near you to see this production. You'll thank me. And if you're ever in Chicago and want to see it, but don't have anyone to go with you...just let me know! I'll be there will bells on! I'll be seeing it again once the sitting company is here -- I'm fascinated by the thought of Ana Gasteyer (of SNL) playing Elphaba.

I saw the Tony's! Kudos to Cherry Jones (Out, Loud & Proud!) who took Best Lead Performance by an Actress in a Play (Doubt, about the clergy sexual abuse, which took Best Play: sounds Really Good). Re Cherry Jones (oops, this probably belongs on the GMP "Gossip/Rumor" thread :glasses ): was that her partner (younger, very pretty) who was sitting w/ her? Because I recognize her (she's an actor, too, I'm sure), but just can't place her. :hmm

As to the internet? Well, what can I say (that hasn't been said)?

I actually WAS w/o it, from about September-December 2001: somehow I survived, obviously.

Are we counting email here? I first emailed, c. late 1992: my then-boyfriend had moved to 3 hours away, and we used it to assist our long-distance relationship.

I think that' s all I did "online" (did I even use that phrase then?) until about the Summer of 1995. I even remember WHAT were the first websites I saw: all related to Babylon 5 (All 4 or 5 of 'em? :-D)

But we (the boyfriend who was by then my husband) didn't have the internet at home until the Summer of '97, I think.

Oh, the Summer of '97: the Summer of My First Xena Nutballdom!!! My love of the internet grew, completely and totally intertwined w/ my love of that show. (And the following summer, I discovered fan fiction and was completly lost . . . and within a couple of years, so was my marriage. But that's another story!)

GG . . . and the rest is history. Love ya, internet. Love ya, Kitten. Out

I think the woman sitting with Cherry Jones might be her partner - her name is Sarah Paulson - although I didn't know she was gay.

She played Rene Zellweger's editor in Down With Love who dated David Hyde Pierce's character. Anyway, Cherry thanked Laura Wingfield at the end of her acceptance speech and Sarah P is currently playing Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway. Plus, there was that kiss... I was wondering the same thing you were.

It's so nice to watch the Tony's and getting to see so many nominees thanking and kissing their partners - expressing so much love and seeing so many great relationships without any judgement or sensation. It's the way the whole world should be.

Oh yeah: there are so many gay guys (many w/ partners :kiss) on the Tony's, it'd take forever to list 'em all! :lol

GG So you're saying the actor is named Sarah Paulson---and I DID see her in Down With Love, that's it!---but she's playing a character named Laura Wingfield, and Cherry thanked "Laura Wingfield"??? Maybe Sarah's not All-The-Way-Out (or wasn't, before last night! :eyebrow), and Cherry was trying to (slightly) protect her anonymity? Out

See, if we didn't have the internet, how else could we incessantly?

So much of my school work revolves around the internet. Either through online classes, or for regular classes there are message boards to talk to professors and other students, online journals to do research (Go Litt Majors!), and oh so much more.

Plus I need to use email to talk to my boyfriend because our schedules are so different that phone conversations are a rarity, and right now he is a camp counselor in the middle of Pennslyvania and I'm over here in NJ.

And plus there is the fact that I am so shy and rarely talk so the internet and writing emails is the time when I really shine! :::cue cheezy music::: and all of the clubs that I am in rely on the internet...good dear

lori without internet = lori curled up in a ball in the corner...sure I'd be reading a book, but I'd be sad on the inside.

Well, I think we all just learnt a lesson about the importance of the internet. :P

The kitten was down and I just did not know what to do at work. (Do some work, maybe? No way.)

*sighs with relief* I'm so glad it's back.

*hugs the kitten*

I'm often amazed by the net. Sure we've had the television and the telephone, but neither compares to the immediate gratification of cyberspace. I have become an addict.

Hello, my name is Urnie... and... I'm a netaholic.

Feels good to confess. I'm sure it isn't a big surprise to any of you here. I love this board. I don't really visit many others, certainly not as religiously as this one.

Without the net? Screw that. I don't even want to imagine a world without it. I've made friends all around the world. Is there any other place where you could speak with Australia, Scotland, Ireland, and Detroit, simultaneously? Not without being instutionalized.

I love the net! :x *Hugs modem* Oh, and the person that invented high speed access, should go right to heaven! *does nekkid moonlit dance in their honor*

See, I've completely embarrassed myself and I don't really care. IRL I would have needed at least three drinks for that. This net thing is also economical.
