Title: Clashing Swords

Author: EndoraVolk

Feedback: If you will.

Spoilers: None.

Setting: Alternate universe, totally. I don't even know if it's set in the Middle Ages. It's probably a completely different universe. Horses, swords, castles, princesses...

Rating: NC-17

Disclaimer: All characters belong to Mutant Enemy, I'm just using them in a very blameless, un-guilty way.

Notes: Hope you like it. It's sort of an idea I've been toying with in my head this Christmas.

----------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 1

“You’re here” she panted, sitting up.

“I am. You knew I would find you, sooner or later.”

“Yes.”

There wasn’t much more to say. The redhead crossed her arms and waited patiently for the other girl to slide up from her enormous bed and reach for her sword.

“Don’t you want to change clothes?” the redhead lifted one of her eyebrows and smirked.

The other girl shook her head, making her blond hair sway around her like a yellow wave. She was barefoot and wearing just her nightgown, while the other girl was completely dressed in her family’s armor, just without the helmet. The green badges on her shoulders were significant enough.

Shrugging, the redhead gave a few random steps and pulled out her sword. This was going to be fun. Sneaking into Lady Tara’s bedroom (getting into the castle had been dead easy) and killing her before the great battle… it was a great idea. Her father would be proud.

Tara took her sword out of its sheath and swung it before her. She should have guessed that something like this would happen. It was evident that they would try something before the official battle. Something like murdering their enemy’s daughter in her sleep. Tara’s only surprise was that they had sent this girl, the only daughter of the neighboring king: Princess Willow.

“Why did they send you?” Tara asked “When I kill you, your kingdom will be powerless. Chaos, treason, internal wars… My father’s kingdom will be the more powerful without even fighting.”

“Oh, and what makes you think you’ll be capable of killing me, Lady Tara?”

“Some things I just know.”

The bedroom was large enough for a sword fight, and it had little furniture. Tara was quite an austere person. Only the bed, a marble writing table and chair and a bulky dresser. These things were placed against the walls, so there was a more than decent space in the middle. Willow grinned and then nodded. Tara returned the nod; she knew it was time.

She leaped, swinging her sword over her head and slammed it against Tara’s, who was already expecting the blow. She gritted her teeth and held her sword in place, not stepping back, until Willow herself retreated. The redhead grunted and tried a side blow, which was also repelled.

Wow, she was totally amazed with Tara’s dexterity. Never she would’ve thought that the girl she had met some time ago and re-seen one month ago could be such a sword-woman. Unlike her, Tara would never be queen because she had an older brother, so Willow didn’t really see a reason for the long hours of training Tara must have endured to achieve those… skills.

It was Tara’s turn to smile. She knew Willow’s thoughts as if she could read them. The redhead was surprised, and was using all her strength to counter her blows and savage attacks. Good.

“Come on, Princess”, she scoffed, kicking at Willow’s legs while she fought her sword “They say the Slayer’s given you lessons. Where are those skills?”

All Willow could do was snarl and try to fight back. She was too busy to fight and talk at the same time. But it was true, even if she couldn’t answer: the Slayer had been training her. Their swords clashing again, she snatched Tara’s wrist and pushed, trying to throw her to the floor.

I know what you’re trying, Tara thought, letting herself be pushed. As soon as her back touched the floor, she grabbed Willow’s arm to hold her in place and kicked her stomach with both feet, propelling Willow across the room and onto the bed. The blonde grasped Willow’s sword and ran to the bed before the other could get up or know where she was. She crossed the two swords with Willow’s neck between them, not pressing hard but touching the skin. If Willow moved, the blades would slit.

“Now what?” Tara smiled.

“Now kill me”, Willow answered, seriously determined.

“You underestimated me, Princess. You thought you could sneak into my chamber, in the middle of the night, and slit my throat or something. Did you really think that I was another helpless damsel?”

Willow wanted to shake her head, but the swords would have cut her neck, so she just said “no”. It was true, she had never considered Tara just an uptight damsel, a maiden like the others.

“Really?” Tara whispered, climbing onto the bed and onto Willow.

The redhead opened her eyes wide when she felt Tara sitting on her abdomen. Or, more precisely, straddling her.

“What are you doing?” she blurted out.

“I’m going to make this fight just a touch fairer.”

With that, the blonde threw Willow’s sword to the other side of the room and, using her own, cut off the green badges that represented the colors of Willow’s family. Then, she cut the leather straps that held the armor together and lifted the breastplate, throwing it too across the room.

Willow felt exposed, as a cool breeze blew where her armor had been. She was completely defenseless now, and still, she stared at the high ceiling and remembered the first time she saw Tara.

She was nine, and was playing with the town boys in front of the church, instead of going to Father Marc’s lessons about the lives of the saints. She didn’t care about saints, it was just stuff her mother wanted her to learn. She and the boys were acting out imaginary battles with wooden swords and, as far as she knew, they thought that she was a boy too, for she often shunned her dresses for the more comfortable attire of boys. Really, she couldn’t care less if they thought her a boy or a girl; what angered her was hearing comments on the strangeness of her hair color.

Suddenly, their game was interrupted by the arrival of two ladies on horseback. They were so similar-looking that they could be no other than mother and daughter: long strands of braided, golden hair and blue eyes that looked like jewels.

The mother called the boys to her, but only Willow and the eldest boy obeyed.

“Take our horses inside and I’ll give you a coin” the woman said, kindly, “Is Father Marc inside?”

“Yes ma’am” Willow answered, and nervously held the girl’s horse still while she dismounted.

The girl smiled and thanked Willow, but the redhead just stood there uneasily, holding the reins and not wanting to touch the horse.

“My horse is harmless” the girl said, stroking its white forehead.

“I-I’m… scared of horses.”

The blond girl laughed, but not cruelly, just surprised, and then did the strangest thing. She took the horse herself, like the lowliest servant. Willow dropped her mouth open and walked with her to the stables.

“How old are you?” the little blonde asked.

“Nine. You?”

“Ten. What do you want to be when you grow up?”

“I want to be a knight” Willow said, grabbing her wood sword in her little hand and slashing the air.

“Well then, if you want to be a knight, you’d better get over that horse-fear.”

“Yes, you’re right. What do you want to be?”

Little Tara smiled mischievously and pulled Willow close, to whisper in her ear. “I want to be a witch.”

Willow opened her mouth again, and tried to explain to this crazy girl that witches were still burnt at the stake, but the blonde’s only answer was a more mysterious shrug.

“What’s your name?”

“Tara. What’s yours?”

“Willow.”

“That’s a beautiful name. Beautiful tree.”

“Thanks, but yours too. Maybe someday I could show you the actual tree I got my name from. It’s beside the bank of a lake, barely out of town.”

“Great, yes, we should certainly go some time. Now my mother and I have to see Father Marc, so… goodbye, Willow.”

“Bye…”

The remembrance was bittersweet now. Her horse-fear was over, and she had managed to be the knight she dreamed to be. Yes, she was a woman, and yes, her hair was weird (red), but she had made it, and silenced every digressing voice against her. Even her father had finally consented it and given her an armor. Willow rolled her eyes and looked at Tara. Her blond hair had darkened slightly, but she still resembled that little girl. Deep inside she was still tender and kind, like her mother; Willow was sure, even if she too had changed.

Another update guys, I'm productive today. Thanks for stopping by!!

Chapter 2

“Tara” Willow cleared her throat, her neck touching the blade of the sword.

“Yes, Princess?” she asked, mockingly.

“Do you remember the first time we met?”

“Of course” she smiled warmly, much like her mother “You were scared of my horse, and I thought that you were a boy. By the way… you never took me to the lake, where that tree is. The willow tree you got your name from. Is it still there?”

“Yes, it is.”

They fell silent for some moments, each lost in the remembrances of that first time they met. Tara pictured that little Willow, with dirt on her nose and cheeks, ruffled hair and ragged clothes. Then, she pictured little Willow again, on the second time she had seen her, not knowing that the redhead was doing the same thing.

Later that day, when little Willow had returned to her father’s castle, five maids had dragged her to the washbasin and had scrubbed her clean until her skin had reddened. Her hair had been forcefully combed and braided, and her boyish clothes had burned in the courtyard, substituted by a white and pink dress that dragged on the floor.

A nightmare. Her father had organized some celebration on an unknown excuse and had invited all the neighboring kingdoms. It was a specially fatuous event, and she had to assist, as his only daughter and heiress of everything. How she had abhorred that dress and that cleanness… And her sword, where was her sword? Probably burning out in the courtyard too but, no matter how many times they burned her boyish stuff, she managed to acquire new clothes and a new wooden sword, even if she had to buy it from the poor town boys.

Sighing, she allowed herself to be led to the great hall, where her father an all the guests were already gorging on pigs, chickens, boars, geese, and all the greasy animals in the country. It looked like a food parade. And a drink parade too; the servants were rolling barrel after barrel into the room and braking them with axes.

Her mother spotted her in a corner, trying to make herself inconspicuous; she felt ridiculous with that dress. And her drunk father and the other lords and kings looked like monsters, roaring and hooting their laughter.

“Willow!” her mother hissed “Why are you there, hidden in a corner? Come, come to your table.”

Her table ended up being the place where they had situated the daughters of all the lords and kings invited to the party. They were a bunch of stuck-up ladies no older than eighteen, fussing over their looks and stealing glances at the knights and young lords that sat in the nearest table. If I only had a sword now… A real one, not just wood, she thought, sitting on the end of the bench and glowering at the pathetic sight before her.

The younger girls were not very different either. They looked like miniature copies of their older friends and sisters. Their future was already written down in the lives of their grandmothers and mothers. Every one of them was trying to look well-bred and pretty. Every one… wait a moment. Willow frowned and stared at one of the girls, the one that was furthest from her. She looked like… She stood up suddenly, impulsively, and circled the table.

“Tara?”

Tara was there, looking away from the scandal that the other girls were provoking. She was wearing a green dress, with yellow sleeves and yellow borders, and her hair was mostly free, except for two thin braids tied at the back of her head. It was Tara alright. The blonde frowned and turned to look at Willow. She could see her clearly, but she couldn’t quite place her, Willow was sure of that.

“Tara, it’s me. Willow.”

“Willow?” the blonde pronounced the name as if it was an unknown word for her “Willow?”

“Yes, it’s me. Willow, from the church, remember? I-I-I took your horse. Well, I didn’t actually take it because I’m afraid of them, I told you, so you took it. Which is weird, because I’ve never seen a lady take her own horse to the stables. I’m also a lady, but you didn’t know because of the clothes I was wearing, but I am. This is my father’s castle. And you’re here, so you must be the daughter of someone important. Not that I care, but one can’t help wondering. And you took your horse yourself, wow…”

“Willow” the blonde repeated, cutting off the redhead’s diatribe “I can’t believe it, but it is you. I thought… I thought you were a boy.”

She said those words softly, as if she was afraid of offending or shocking Willow. But that was not the case. The little redhead was too happy, and she didn’t really mind being confused with a boy.

“Remember?” Tara asked, grinning and shifting a little her position on top of Willow.

“Yes” the redhead whispered “We talked and played all night. I remember.”

“And our maids found us in the morning, curled up on your bed, sleeping” Tara closed her eyes for a second, recalling the feeling.

This was her chance. She had to throw Tara on the bed and punch her to keep her more or less still, and then roll on the floor, grab her sword and begin the fight again. And kill her. As soon as her mind formulated those thoughts she found them ridiculous, and she knew she wasn’t going to do that. They were remembering their childhood, the day they had first met and become instant friends. It was a tragedy! They didn’t see each other again until a month ago, nine years later! She couldn’t kill Tara. Then why did I come?, she wondered, kicking herself for not being able.

“Tara, tonight I came to kill you.”

“That’s the impression I got when I saw you climbing the windowsill.”

“I mean, I was determined to do it. It would have been a great moral victory for us. The… the idea, the concept was genius, but the actual doing it is getting in my way.”

The blonde sighed and left her sword on the bed, beside her, where it slightly sunk the covers with its weight, and placed her hands on both sides of Willow’s head. Her eyes were sparking an intermittent light of joy and sadness that was driving Willow crazy.

“Princess…” she breathed out again, on Willow’s face “Killing you would be even more convenient for my family, for you are the heiress of your kingdom… I don’t want to kill you either. You’re going to fight at the battle, at your father’s side, I know. Maybe you’ll die then anyway, but I don’t want to be the one that does it. Goodbye, Willow.”

Goodbye? Willow frowned but, before she could ask anything, Tara had grabbed her by the shirt and half-lifted her. It was useless, asking what was she doing, Tara just smiled and dragged her towards the window. It was a good ten meters high. The redhead squirmed, begged and tried to free herself, but it was useless. Tara began pushing her out of the window.

“Goodbye, my Princess. I’ll see you at the battle.”

With that, she caressed Willow’s face with her hand and released the grip on her shirt. The red-haired girl fell, cursing all the way, and finally landed on the deep pit that surrounded the castle, which was filled with water, so the only injury that she suffered was one in her pride. She was going to get Tara for this, oh yes.

littlecrazy80: I know, poor Willow. I've got my pride too, it's the kind of thing that would drive me crazy. So I can relate with her very well. Anyway, I think her anger is quite funny for us and Tara, for anyone except herself.

My Always: Okay, I got you. Wait, did I really get you? Great! Now, bow. Oh, you meant my story got you. That's great too. Here you go: more, more, more.

Truck driving magic mama: Another fish in my hook... hehe, just joking. Thanks for your kind words, I enjoyed writing about their childhood. I know, I know, it was a bit frustrating. I wanted them in bed too, really in bed but oh well, we'll have to wait a little.

silentinformer: Thanks, silentinformer, I'm glad you like this story too. The breastplate, I know... *sigh* what can I do? You have a theory about something? Hmm, when the story advances, let me know if you were right or what.

Tempest Duer: Me likes swords too, so I couldn't wait to mix W&T with them.

Chapter 3

Oh, yes, she was going to get her for this. She had mounted her horse in a rage, and they galloped down the hills and into the valley where her father’s castle was. The poor horse was begging for a rest, but she didn’t give him one until she had crossed the gigantic castle doors, when she had handed him to a servant. Someone had to pay for her sullen pride, and the only one there had been her horse.

Never mind, she had work to do. She had to conceive a plan of revenge before the big battle. This had nothing to do with the war between Tara’s kingdom and her own. This was revenge for having been thrown out the window like a useless scrap. No one had ever humiliated her that much, not even when she was a little girl begging her father for a real sword. Furthermore, Tara had kept her sword and armor; what an offense! Okay, Tara, you want to play rough? Prepare yourself.

She marched into her chamber and pulled off the bedcover, which she used to dry her hair, and then enveloped herself with it. God, she was freezing, that water had been icy cold! Frowning, she sat on her chair and stared at the bed; the last thing she wanted was to lay down there. Her mind wandered; she still felt as if she was on Tara’s bed; her back neatly nestled on the soft mattress, her abdomen pressed down by Tara’s weight. Comfortable but…with her neck imprisoned between two sword blades.

Her neck! She stood up and placed herself in front of the mirror, pulled down the collar of her shirt, and examined her exposed neck. It wasn’t cut, but it exhibited two long, red lines caused by the pressure of the swords. The marks hadn’t bled, they would go away; away from her skin, but never from her pride.

After pulling up the shirt-collar, she went back to the chair and dragged it in front of her table. Its surface was covered with maps, most of which she had drawn herself. Placing the most recent one in front of her, she examined it. The Lowlands, where her father reigned, his kingdom; it was a deep valley. And the Highlands, the kingdom of Tara’s father, which was set on the hills above the valley. Apart from the different geographical disposition, both kingdoms were very similar: their people, their wealth… They were so close that there was –or used to be- frequent trade between the kingdoms, and marriages between people of both kingdoms were common. Their military strengths were also alike, or so it seemed. Willow was worried that, on the day of the battle, the Highlands would surprise them with some kind of weapon, or even something scarier… Willow was wigged, and she felt she had a right to be wigged. Her father would never listen to her but she had a feeling that there would be some magic stuff going on. Knowing Tara, that wouldn’t be too surprising.

Knowing Tara… she didn’t know her that much, she just thought it was very possible. Her index finger began tracing circles on the map, around the location of Tara’s castle.

Tara heaved a sigh and got back into bed, trying to get some much-needed sleep. But she was somehow sure that she wouldn’t fall sleep, that her mind would wander and think about Willow’s visit. Okay, it hadn’t been a “visit”, it had been a murder-attempt. At least the redhead hadn’t been successful, she thought, smiling and remembering their fight. Poor Willow, she had been so surprised… And then, when they had hit the bed… they had suddenly become best friends again; she had felt it, and Willow too. It would’ve been too perfect to ignore their families’ struggle and rekindle their friendship.

Willow had forgotten, she had been the first one to say that she didn’t want to fight (that she didn’t want to kill Tara). And Tara had been very, very close to forgetting. So she had thrown Willow out the window to fight the temptation. A risky action, she knew. Knowing Willow -knowing the little she knew about Willow-, she knew that for her it had been the worst kind of humiliation. If Princess Willow was as offended as she imagined her to be… (Tara looked out the window) she would soon have her back, climbing into her room again.

The redhead had spent the whole day in fury, kicking at chairs and old armor-suits, waiting for the night. She had barely paid attention during her father’s meeting with his knights. All she desired was that the sky would darken; all she could think about were plans to make Tara pay for what she had done, not plans to win the battle.

Finally, the sky did turn dark-blue, and it was all she needed. She stormed out of the castle, jumped on her horse, borrowed a sword from the armory, and sped off. Tara’s castle was near, she only had to mount one of the hills that surrounded her valley and there was Tara’s kingdom.

However, she still didn’t know what to do to her. Kill her at last? Torture her? Tara had certainly earned a beating; whether the punishment should be serious or playful, she didn’t know.

Willow left her horse tied to a tree, in a little forest near the castle, and ran the rest of the way. To fool the guards was dead easy; she was only one, all she had to do was to confound herself with the shadows. To the guards she was just another shadow, and so she crawled until she reached the castle-walls. Then, repeating last night’s procedure, she hurled a rope with a hook tied on its end. The hook connected with Tara’s windowsill, and all she had to do was climb. Dead easy.

In a few minutes, she got to Tara’s window and jumped inside the room as silently as a cat. She had been trained in strength, agility, sword-handling… she was going to-

“Hello, Princess.”

Willow almost jumped out of her skin at the sound of Tara’s voice. She saw her sitting up on her bed, with her arms around her upright knees and her hair falling all over her shoulders. There were two swords lying on the bed beside her -one of them was Willow’s-, the armor was on the floor, against the wall.

“Hello…” the redhead sighed “Were you expecting me?”

“I figured you would be coming back. You forgot your sword and armor.”

“You know damn well I didn’t ‘forget’ them” Willow lowered her voice, but it came out almost like a whine.

“I know, I’m sorry, I should’ve thrown them out the window after you” Tara smiled, jokingly.

“Give them back.”

“That’s all you came back for?”

“No” Willow unsheathed the sword she had brought “You deserve a punishment for what you did. I also came to give it to you.”

The blonde rose her eyebrows and laughed, showing an amusement that carved another wound on Willow’s pride. Everyone respected her. Everyone. She had worked hard to make it that way, fighting against her father’s own knights and winning. Only this girl, only Tara had the power to irritate her; it was disturbing.

“Willow” Tara kicked off the bed covers and suddenly had a serious face “Do you know why I won you yesterday, and why I’ll win you today if you insist on fighting? Because you felt and feel vulnerable with me. If you hadn’t felt vulnerable, I wouldn’t have been able to throw you out the window. I’m strong, but I’m not much stronger than you. You were powerless, like a kitten. If I fought you know, you would still be a kitten.”

“Do you really think so?”

Willow rose her sword and brought it down, heavily, towards Tara’s shoulder. This time she was going to get it. But Tara was quick, she rolled out of the blade’s way and grabbed her sword, clashing it against the one Willow was holding. No, not again!, Willow mentally cried, once more inferior to Tara in a sword-fight.

“Why don’t we stop?” Tara said, as if she was talking to a small child “We don’t have to fight.”

“We do. You’re a Highland, I’m a Lowland. Our fathers’-“

“Willow, please, I know the story as well as you. And we’ll fight soon enough, the day of the battle is nearing. What I mean is… right now, here, I’m just Tara and you’re just Willow. We’ll have to fight soon enough” she repeated.

“I guess you’re right. Right now you’re my friend.”

The redhead dropped her sword and sat on the bed, beside Tara, who also dropped her sword. They looked at each other for a while, enjoying the silence, empty of the clattering of swords they were to listen too soon, in the battle, surrounding them. Willow’s eyes brightened with the thought of the battle, her first real one, but then remembered that Tara would be there too. Was it possible to forget the upcoming war and just be friends now?

“What do you want to do, friend?” Willow asked, sarcastically.

“I was hoping you would ask me, friend” Tara laughed, acknowledging the joke “I’ve actually thought of something.”

Damn I love this one!!:bow

Yay! :banana 3 updates in 2 days :banana

This is beautiful... Great update, can't wait for more. :)

Oh, and poor, angry :fit2 Willow! I mean, it looks as though she is vulnerable and Tara isn't! I want Willow's pride won back. I'm sure you can think of something.. :wink

I actually thought of the famous Romeo and Juliet scenario.. "Two families, both alike in dignity" and all that. I hope though the end will be slightly different this time!

littlecrazy80: you know when you're a little kid and you fight with someone, it means you love them. I think their fights are something like that, but they're over for now.

silentinformer: I have so much fun writing an angry Willow. It's humorous to me. Yeah, subtle cliffhanger there, but Tara's plan isn't too hard to guess, where they're going.

Truck driving magic mama: I know, poor Willow, but I'm guessing her pride will be eventually satisfied. I am thinking of something. Yeah, it's coming out a little like 'Romeo and Juliet', I had intended it to be, with the two enemy families, which are there alright, but of course the ending... is going to be different. A lot of it is.

My Always: one of your top favorite fics? This one? I'm honored! And it is, it must be an intense experience for Willow, irritation mixing with other emotions, and there's teasing too. You want me to turn the heat up? I'll get there, eventually.

watersong84: You know, when I began writing this, it was clear that I wanted a medieval setting, which we agree is cool, but I hadn't thought about Tara coming out this (strong) way. I had decided that Willow would be the strong one, with all that sword-training and fighting. But then I really began with the story and suddenly I'm creating this strong-minded Tara, which I like, and I think she balances Willow, which has grown to act more like a knight, more by instinct.

Egnalos: Update on the way, just out of the oven. I'm glad you like the story

----------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 4

“What have your thought?” Willow asked, suddenly anxious to hear it.

Tara grinned. Sometimes talking to Willow was like speaking to a little girl, but she liked that, she really did. Since the first time she had met her, when both of them were children, she had been taken by her innocence and goodness. All that swinging of swords -even if now the swords were real- was still little Willow playing knight. She could train with the Slayer, she could fool grown men and beat them to the ground. But she, Tara, with the little time they had spent together, she seemed to know Willow upside down. She knew what hid behind Willow’s insistence on attacking her. It was because the redhead didn’t know a better way of approaching her. She had never meant to kill her.

“I want to see the tree” Tara said, simply.

“The tree? The willow tree?”

“Yes, that one.”

“But-but the tree is in my kingdom! If someone finds you…”

“Princess, right now you’re in my kingdom. You’re the one in danger, and you don’t mind. Why should I? I want you to take me to the lake, to the tree, okay, friend?”

“Yes, My Lady…” Willow muttered ironically, standing up.

However, Tara wanted to get changed first; she didn’t want to be “running around the forest” barefoot and in her nightgown, so she went to her dresser and dug out a fresh cotton dress and a pair of small boots. Willow simply watched unconsciously (the blonde’s back facing her), until Tara grabbed the corners of her nightgown and started pulling it off through her head. She felt like a voyeur, and strangely nervous, as if she was contemplating something forbidden for her, so she turned around and stared out the window. At the sky, at the moon, at the pit of freezing water she knew too well. At anything. She wasn’t used to seeing anyone naked; in fact, except for herself, she had never seen anyone naked. And the only thing she had seen, the small strap of Tara’s back, had been enough to give her an eerie feeling. Not bad-eerie, just curious-shuddery-eerie.

When Tara finished dressing up and sliding her sword in her belt, she walked to Willow and placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Ready”, she said, peering down at the ten meter fall.

“Do you want me to, uh…” Willow murmured, extending her arms.

“Princess...” Tara sighed, rolling her eyes “Do I have to remind you that I’m no damsel in distress?”

Without waiting for an answer, Tara jumped out the window, descending down the rope with the agility of a monkey. Wow, Willow thought, wow at her yellow hair rising with the wind; wow at her skill going down the rope. And… perfect landing, by the way. When she was totally sure that Tara was alright (foolish worrying), she secured her sword in her belt and grabbed her armor, sliding down the rope using just one arm and her legs.

Now the delicate part, avoiding the guards. Willow took the lead, clutching her armor with one arm and using the other to guide Tara. The two girls crouched and advanced that way, using the shadows and the bushes to hide. Willow was stern, biting her lower lip and deeply concentrated, while Tara kept a permanent little smile on her lips.

They got to the little forest eventually, which meant that they were safe. Unless they built a fire or something like that, no lookout from the castle could spot them. Willow found her horse, untied him, secured her armor on one of the horse’s leather straps, and brought him close to Tara so that she could mount him.

“You left your horse here while you went to my room?” Tara asked, not showing the smallest intention of mounting him.

“Well, of course. And last night too.”

“Poor thing, and now you mean him to carry us both?”

Willow was completely bewildered. What with the horse? That was what horses were for; riding them, leaving them tied up to something until their owner needed them again. She just stared at Tara, hoping the blonde could make out her perplex face in the darkness.

“I’m just saying… that you should treat him better” Tara said, stroking the horse’s light-brown fur.

“Okay, whatever. Could we just get out of here, please? This isn’t the time to-”

“No, Willow, you don’t get it. This is your horse, he’s been carrying you around for all your little adventures and he’s going to carry you into battle soon enough. I’m not telling you to kiss him, just… treat him better. Here, try.”

The blonde handed her the reins, and folded her arms before her breast, waiting. Willow wrinkled her nose, she had never in her life heard anyone talking like Tara did. The things she said… weird things, coming out of nowhere. And the things she did too, like the first time they met, when she had taken her horse into the stables herself. Crazy stuff, like wanting to be a witch. And now, she wanted her to treat the horse better. How?

“How?”

“Be nice to him, say his name, stroke his snout… just be nice.”

“His name?” Willow frowned “He doesn’t have a name.”

“Really? You’re telling me you didn’t name your horse?” Tara took the reins from Willow’s hands “I don’t want to see you riding this horse, I’ll be the one holding the reins, and you’ll see the difference. Now I understand; you haven’t gotten over your horse-fear.”

Horse-fear? She had no horse-fear left! Willow pouted but she didn’t dare to contradict Tara again. She gripped the saddle and mounted, and then held her hand to help Tara. This time, she allowed to be helped, and mounted the horse behind Willow, taking the reins.

“Now,” Tara whispered, her mouth close to Willow’s ear, “Lesson number one; horses are intelligent animals, they don’t need to be slapped or beaten to understand things. Be gentle. Understood?”

The redhead just nodded, too astonished to even mouth an answer. Seemingly satisfied, Tara guided the horse out of the forest. At first Willow couldn’t focus on anything apart from the weirdness of not being the one that rode the horse. She moved her legs uneasily, unconsciously wanting to direct the horse like she had always done, but Tara was in command; her hands held the reins; she could feel her knuckles rapping her lower back now and again.

They got to the end of the hills, which marked the border between their kingdoms. Careful now, Willow thought, squinting her eyes and grasping the saddle with all her force. She couldn’t help it, she couldn’t bear not being the one that led the horse. However, Tara descended the hills expertly, swiftly. The horse was responding to her gentle commands; he didn’t jerk abruptly like when Willow gave him an order; he moved with slenderness, he seemed to glide, instead of galloping. Now she saw the difference.

“Now you’re noticing” Tara whispered, again nearing Willow’s ear.

“Yeah, how did you know?”

“I feel you, I feel you moving with the horse. You were rigid before, trying to move in the opposite direction that the horse was moving. If you’re tense, he will be tense too. By the way, we’re in your kingdom now, Princess, where do you want me to go?”

Willow gave her directions. They were not to trespass the town’s walls, just go around them. Soon enough, they got to the place. It was a small forest that looked like an oasis in the middle of the valley, with low trees and the almost secluded lake. Tara led the horse to the small clearing, where the lake was, and dismounted. Willow did the same, and pulled the horse towards a tree to tie him up.

“Willow…”

“What?” the girl cried “Now what have I done wrong?”

“You should tie the horse closer to the lake, in case he wants to take a drink.”

Grumbling, Willow did as she was told and then dutifully returned to the blonde. Tara seemed to be completely happy where she was , looking at the lake, with the moon reflecting on its dark surface. Perfectly happy and content.

Tara was feeling at ease. She had enjoyed teasing Willow, but it was for a good cause. Her poor horse was not to blame of Willow’s fear. Besides, now they were before the lake, and it was a marvelous place. Peaceful, away from the war preparations that haunted her all over the place.

And, even if they had spent very little time together, she had really missed Willow. Apart from their jokes about being “friends”, she missed having a real friend, someone that wasn’t paid to keep her company and someone that wasn’t those stuck-up, rich family girls who only cared about grooming and marrying conveniently. She was forced to talk and relate to those girls, and she just couldn’t express how she despised them. God knew she missed roaming the forest, riding horse down a prairie… she missed nature, she missed her mother.

She remembered the day –a month ago- when she had reunited with Willow after eight or nine years. This time, it had been her father the one that celebrated a party in his castle, inviting everyone important; specially, his good friend the King of the Lowlands: Willow’s father.

Thank you for another quick update. I love those!:love

It seem like Tara's been able to teach Willow a thing or two and for some reason knows Willow really well. I wonder if Willow will be able to teach Tara anything.:hmm

Oh, I love how you've made Willow out to be really innocent. Is Tara like that as well? You know,:blush to never be with anyone before?

The whole scene with them in the woods could be very romantic:luv2 or just my luck they get interrupted. Please don't let it be that,:pray no good can come from them being discovered.

Please continue with your wonderful work. I'll be waiting by the computer for another update.;)

littlecrazy80: what happened? at least I've figured that out. I didn't know, but I've thought about it, but the answer won't be in this chapter.

silentinformer: I'm glad you're getting hitched by the mystery. I really am. That means I'm doing a good job :) Well yes, you're theory-girl, conspiracy-theory-girl. I think I know what you're thinking about (does that make sense?), but I don't think you're going to be right. We'll see.

watersong84: Yes, that was what I was trying to explain earlier. It's still Tara, is it? And it's still Willow. At least that's what I'm trying, because this is a fanfic about those characters. They're still them, but, with the spunk. *shares your jealousy of Willow*

My Always: hehe, I'm not going to answer that question, whether if Tara's is as innocent as Willow... we'll see. Discovery in the woods... not likely.

little miss 666: I'm updating it as I write it, which is frequently, yes, don't fear.

For everyone: I was going to make this chapter longer, the cliffhanger wasn't meant to be there, but I just WANTED to post this so badly...

Chapter 5

Tara continued her remembrance of what had happened a month ago. As always, she had been forced to hang out with those shallow rich girls that acted like a flock of geese, fussing over every little thing. She really didn’t fit with them, could nobody see? Her mother had, and only made her “mix” with her “convenient friends” on parties and public occasions. When it was necessary. But her mother wasn’t… here anymore, and her father –perhaps out of fear that she spent so much time by her self- constantly urged on the “flock of geese” to never leave her alone. “To keep you company” were his exact words; a company which she abhorred.

The party was a noisy one, a celebration of constant cup-clanking, beer-dripping, belligerent conversations and savage cheerfulness. Women were a quieter version of their husbands, and girls were fussier versions of their mothers. Boys… boys were even louder fussers than their parents and their sisters.

Whatever… Tara’s eyes couldn’t pay attention to all the things that were going around her, and her head was spinning. If she could concentrate on something banal like the appearance of her hair or her dress, like the other girls, she would forget the ruckus surrounding her. But she couldn’t, couldn’t be superficial even if she tried.

There were some boys -some knights, judging by the pelt of plaited metal they wore over their shirts- spilling wine all over the table, trying to get the girls drunk by (unsuccessfully) trying to fill their cups. Tara couldn’t bear it any longer; she stood up suddenly, pushing one of the boys’ arms. Too late to move or duck; a splatter of wine flew out of the boy’s jug, pouring on Tara’s dress.

“I’m sorry” the boy muttered, rolling the words with his tongue “How can I-”

“I-it’s okay” she muttered hurriedly, now having the perfect excuse to disappear from the table.

She rushed out of the great hall and leant on the wall, enjoying the relative calm of muffled voices. Thank God, she sighed, pressing her palms against the cool stone wall.

“Hey”, a voice said, “are you alright?”

Tara opened her eyes and jerked her head to her right, without moving her hands or her back from the wall. There was a girl a couple of meters from her, with no apparent excuse to be there. No conquering young man, no stain in her greenish dress… The girl looked her age, maybe a little younger, and wore her hair shorter than the decent length for a lady. The longest strands barely surpassed her shoulder, Tara noted with surprise. But she didn’t acknowledge these things with the horror any other rich lady would; she wasn’t horrified at all; in fact, she felt rather curious. What was she doing in the corridor, alone?

The girl walked towards her, with a worried expression on her face. She wore a little wrinkled frown, and her eyes were frightfully enormous, but in the good sense. Those eyes…

“Are you feeling sick?” she asked, since Tara hadn’t answered before.

“I’m fine, thanks. I’m not sick.”

“Oh” the girl retreated a step “Sorry, I thought that maybe… uh, you were dizzy or something. I’m sorry.”

“I was a little dizzy, but not of the wine” she explained, knowing what the girl had thought “Of the people, the noise…”

“Me too. That’s why I came here.”

Tara rose her eyebrows, surprised that someone had thought the same thing as her.

“Someone spilled wine on my dress” Tara grinned “What’s your excuse?”

“Oh, I hadn’t thought about that. Spilling wine on my dress… that’s smart. My excuse… well, all I could think of was a headache.”

“Not bad” Tara laughed “Oh, but I didn’t spill wine on my dress. It was just luck, a pestering knight did. I only profited from it.”

What was she doing? Winking at that girl? What? Suddenly, she became conscious of where she was. In her father’s castle, just a wall away from a party that everyone important had come to. Anyone could come out and see them there, and wonder what was the King’s daughter doing with some lady in a corridor? Why wasn’t she attending the guests, accepting courtesies from lords and knights?

Anyway… the girl was here, was now, and she expected words, of course.

“So… um, who are you?” she asked, surprised at the bluntness of her question, the directness.

“I, um, my name is Willow.”

“Willow?” Tara unattached herself from the wall and faced the girl “Willow?”

“Err… yeah…” the girl sounded suddenly afraid.

“No, no, y-you don’t understand. You’re Willow? Red-haired Willow?”

“Uh… yeah? Willow, yes, red-haired, yes. And you are-?” now she sounded even more scared.

“Willow, I’m… I’m Tara. Do you remember-?”

“Tara!” she exclaimed, a wide smile parting her lips “Tara, what are you doing here?”

“I live here!”

“I can’t believe it. Is this your father’s castle? I would’ve come to see you so many times…” Willow said.

“You would have?”

“Of course, I know we were only together for some hours but… I don’t know, I would’ve liked to see you more. I… I have a horse, and I ride it. I’m not afraid anymore.”

“Great, that’s… great.”

They began talking, rapidly at the beginning, excitedly updating their lives for each other. Slowly, they walked down the corridor and, almost unconsciously, they retreated even further away from the party, wanting not only to be completely alone, but to feel completely alone. They sat on one of the castle’s many stairways, made out of cold stone, like the rest of the building. Being far away from the enormous fires that had been prepared for the occasion, they sat close together, almost huddled, talking.

Tara couldn’t stop looking at Willow, at the growth her body had experienced. She was still a bit shorter than her, but that was the least fascinating detail. Her hair had darkened a little, but her eyes were still green, still the same that her nine-year-old version. They were and would always be the eyes of a little girl, she knew.

Even if they hadn’t swallowed a drop of wine or beer, Tara felt her body getting drunk: heavy, slow. In fact, not just her body, but everything seemed to move at a slower pace: Willow’s lips while she spoke, Willow’s eyelids when she blinked, Willow’s hands when she gestured. Willow. It was Willow.

Before she knew it, she was telling Willow about the death of her mother and, just like a drunk person, she couldn’t lie. She couldn’t even hide details. Suddenly concentrating on Willow’s cheek (as if it was the most fascinating thing), she insinuated that her mother had been a witch, and had taught her things, even if her father was horrified by magic. His father was scared, scared of what he couldn’t understand; and scared of what would happen to them if people knew about magic. Luckily, her mother had died a natural death.

Willow looked drunk too. She was telling her that she understood. Everything she told her, she would understand.

“You’re my friend” Willow murmured “You’ll always be my friend. I won’t lose you now. I’ll ride to this castle every day, to see you. I’ll enter this castle and I’ll find you. I…”

Tara flinched, getting to the ugly part of her remembrance. Sadly, Willow’s sentence was interrupted. They were interrupted, and the interruption had lasted one month, until yesterday, when Willow came to her room.
