~*~Chapter 19~*~
~*~*~*~*~ "Sorry Willow," Anya said, a bit of a pout crossing her lips. She lowered her gaze to the floor to avoid any glares she might receive from the gang. She slumped guiltily down in her chair, wishing she'd think before she opened her mouth. She would have to work harder on watching what she said. Tara was still one of her best friends, and she wasn’t about to be the one that slowed down anything that could lead to solving whatever was wrong with the blonde witch. She vowed to stay out of the way unless she knew she could truly help in some way.
The room remained silent; the air around them remained stressed. Willow got up from where she’d been perched on the wall and walked over to the ex-demon. She waited a few seconds, wanting Anya to meet her gaze as she looked down at her. Willow brought a single slender finger down beneath Anya’s chin and brought their eyes together. Willow smiled knowingly at her, "I know you are, I'm sorry I snapped. We just have to figure this out. I can't stand not knowing what's wrong with Tara."
Anya nodded her agreement and smiled sincerely back at Willow, whom she once tried so hard to hate. Maybe this could be the start of a beautiful friendship. A bit of a cliché but that’s what she now wanted from Willow. She played such an important role in so many lives.
"Willow, where do you want to start?" Dawn asked, ready to dive into research mode.
Slumping down in a chair at the center table, Willow bowed her head and took a deep breath.
"Tara and I have these birthmarks. They're not the same, but they are obviously connected. I need to research the symbols. I'm sure I saw something about them before."
"Symbols? Willow, what do they look like?" Anya asked, perking up at something she might actually be able to help with.
As Anya said this, Willow slowly made her way over to the door leading to the training room. She watched the beautiful face of her sweet lover as she slept, and sent a silent prayer for her to get well soon. She watched as Faith had Tara’s head in her lap, and was softly brushing aside the fine hairs from her forehead. She didn’t know how she knew it exactly, but Willow knew that she could trust the young slayer with the most important person in her life, and she also knew that it was also an important step for Faith.
"Well, Tara's has four symbols. A funny looking-shelled thing, a throwing discus, a ceremonial staff, and the lotus flower.” As the words came from her mouth, she watched Faith's attention leave Tara and settle on her. Faith’s eyes relayed the confidence that she would indeed protect the blonde and watch over her. She nodded to Willow and brought her attention back to Tara.
Anya jumped up from her seat; in one swift move she had cleared the distance between herself and Willow and was now just inches from her.
" Are you sure about this?" Anya asked, very excitedly.
"What's going on Anya," Buffy asked, as she joined her friends at the entrance to the training room.
"Giles, a little help here, I mean it can't be . . . can it?" Anya asked, turning around looking seriously at Giles.
"What the hell is going on Anya?" Willow asked, turning her friend back around to face her.
"Willow, you've described four symbols of a major Hindu God." Giles said, cleaning his glasses for what seemed, the thousandth time.
"What does that mean?" Dawn asked.
"Wait, Will, you said you have one too, right?" Buffy asked.
"That's right; what are yours?" Giles asked as he finally finished cleaning his glasses and placed them back on.
"I only had three; a fully bloomed lotus flower, a lotus bud, and three coins." Willow said, looking towards Giles for some sign that he knew what hers were as well.
"Oh My God, Giles..." Anya shrieked, as she flew to the books on the table. She began to open books, every so often tossing one aside to begin searching through another. No one had ever seen her treat her merchandise so carelessly. They all looked to each other, trying to make sense of Anya's unusual behavior. After a couple minutes they continued to watch this odd behavior, until Dawn had finally had enough.
"Dammit, Anya you're freaking us all out." Dawn yelled, as she stepped forward and grabbed Anya's arm. "What's going on?"
"Tara's a Goddess." Xander whispered softly, but the others still heard him, and turned to him in shock. He grinned sheepishly at all the astonished faces and adopted a mock-insulted look. "What? I'm not completely useless," he said.
"So, she is the one that will save us" Dawn said.
"No, I'm not." Tara said, as she slowly emerged from the training room with Faith not even two steps behind her. Tara slowly made her way to Willow’s side, as Faith made her way over to Buffy's. Tara found the hand of her soul mate, and gave it a happy squeeze. She was granted a smile in return. The greeting of the slayers was much more subdued, but no less loving. Faith rounded Buffy's side and stood beside her.
"But you're a Goddess," Xander said.
"Yes I am, and so is Willow. But it's not her, nor I, that will save the world this time."
"No, that can't be, it has to be the two of you." Dawn said pacing the floor. The two slayers moved over to the counter. Faith jumped up on the glass, hoping that Anya’s new mood toward the Magic Box would still hold so she wouldn’t get yelled at. When she didn’t get scolded, she guided her girlfriend between her legs so that Buffy’s back was toward her. Faith wrapped her arms lovingly around Buffy’s neck. She smiled gently when she felt her predecessor lean into her warmth. They watched the activity going on around them, taking in every detail as a slayer does.
"Dawn, what did all the research say about Mahika?" Tara asked, sitting down calmly at the table. Willow grabbed a chair and placed it as close as possible to her lover, sitting next to Tara, she took her hand in hers.
"Just that she can only be defeated by a God or Goddess of pure heart." Dawn said, getting together all of the research on Mahika in case it would be needed.
"That's right, but who has a pure heart? Willow and I don’t. We've both been tainted by life." Tara said softly.
"A baby? A baby is pure at heart. It hasn't yet been tainted by the world." Dawn said, catching on. "So wait, we have to find a baby God or Goddess?
Tara laughed light heartedly as the bell above the Magic Box door rang, announcing a new arrival.
"No Dawn, you already have one." Cordelia said, as she smiled knowingly at Tara. Buffy smiled toward her childhood friend and wrapped herself tighter into the arms of her girlfriend.
"Say what?" Xander asked, standing up and walking over to give his ex a hug. He then walked back to the table where his current love sat.
"It's lovely to see you again Cordelia, but why are you here?" Giles asked.
"I had a vision and I came to help," Cordelia said, reaching out and taking Tara's hand as she approached the group. “You were in my vision Tara…… as well as you Willow."
"What is going on?" Will asked, slumping back down. "I'm so tired none of this makes sense."
Tara let go of Cordelia's hand and turned to her girlfriend. "Will, honey, our baby……. will be of pure heart."
"Baby, what baby? How?"
"The prophecy says, a child born pure God or Goddess by earthbound parents will save the world against a great evil," Cordelia explained to the group, meeting their eyes and holding them. Her gaze finally settled on Willow. "That baby is you and Tara's daughter."
"A daughter?" She switched her gaze from Tara to Cordelia, seeking answers from both of the strong women. She couldn’t understand how each of them was so sure. "Wait a second." Willow took a deep breath capturing the blue eyes of her love, as the biggest smile imaginable took over her.
"Oh My Goddess, Tara you’re... I mean are we..."
"Yes honey, we are" Tara said.
