I don't think only Dani and Jo aren't too happy with Jonathan walking away freely. Probably the reason why Buffy looked at Willow at that time as well.

Did anybody notice that Buffy didn't offer any explanation for letting Jonathan go ?? She just said she did, presumably expecting everyone to just agree with her. I frankly did expect Willow to be much more upset about that. Whatever way you turn it Jonathan did cause Tara to get hurt, that can't sit very well with Willow... maybe she's just surpressing her anger for now (which isn't a good thing to do).

Speaking of surpressing, heh, it was cute to see Willow almost wringing her hands when Tara showed an obvious interest in Trinity. Too bad they don't have VampWillow's outfit anymore, would make for a nice suprise for Tara to have Willow show up in it :D . Lord knows the girls has earned some fun-time after all this.

Xander was being his very obvious self, esp. when asking if Jo and Dani were 'friends' of Tara, heh. One-track-mind rolemodel for sure :-). Anya is mean to Willow, for reason I don't entirely follow. After all, if Anya has already figured out that Tara and Willow are a couple, what's the remaining problem ? If she doesn't trust Xander, she should be mean to Xander. That's allowed :D .

I like Jo's summary of what Jonathan did as well, very much to the point. Come to think of it, why would Buffy or Xander assume the scoobies would be the only ones to remember ? For that matter, why would Jonathan have 'many new enemies' if only the scoobies did remember ??

Seems Buffy is upset that someone actually questions her decisions. To compensate for that she grills Willow on how Jo and Dani got to know about her and the scoobies. That's hardly fair and awfully obvious.

Yeah I can imagine that 'calculus' looked better by the minute after that picnic.

The Edge of Silence - Chap 8f: Be My Blanket

Postby Triscuit7 » Mon May 05, 2003 7:25 pm

Hey Kittens – I’m here with some thank-yous. To each and everyone of you - thanks for reading.

darkmagicwillow

Hey DMW. When I was writing Willow’s POV here, the actions of a tennis fan (look left, look right, follow the bouncing ball) seemed apropos. But you’re also right; Willow just isn’t comfortable with being gay at this point – I’m not surprised you felt she was watching a grenade being juggled. I wondered a bit if Tara would have seen The Matrix, but I decided that she would have gone just to see Trinity. And yes, Tara knows about VW – that happened way back towards the beginning. So often BTVS is compared to a soap opera and I realized the other day that “Edge” really is a soap opera, sort of a moment by moment account of several weeks in Sunnydale. As for the remainder of your feedback, just check out the next update. Thanks again, sweetie.

barnabasvamp

Hey BV. I’m pleased that you enjoyed this update. It was a long time coming; sorry about that. Dani and Jo are working things out, trying to decide if this is love, if it’s a relationship, or if it’s just a fling. But they are friends too. I’m glad you like. Thanks.

TemperedCynic

Hey TC. Dani and Buffy are sort of like two glaciers meeting. Immovable. Knowing what happens later, when I think of Buffy at the end of Superstar and how she lets Jonathan go, all I can think of is what Gwendolyn Post tells Faith: “Faith, you’re an idiot.” Buffy was just that, although I’m not certain what else she could have done short of handing Jonathan over to the Initiative. As for Willow, yes, she does have a lot of things to work out, but her big concern here is being outed. Going by canon, when she comes out to Buffy in NMR, she is not happy about the need, and even then, it’s not about being gay, it’s about loving Tara. I agree that Superstar is not in the same league as “Flowers”, but it does have the similarity of both protagonists gaining something only to lose it. Besides the quality of writing, the big difference of course is the angst – you care about Charlie; Jonathan, not so much. Me and swing, and jazz, and blues – we just don’t get along with some few exceptions, for which I use the argument “Well, I like it so it can’t be X”. I love Gershwin, I like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald and the peppier swing numbers that you can dance to – not that I dance, but I do like to watch. Thanks.

Nix42

Hey Nikki. I have to confess that I get cranky :mad when I don’t get to write. Darcy was really pleased that I was able to update – she says I’m much easier to live with once my feedback addiction is being satisfied. I’m glad that you like Anya; she has been a longtime favorite of mine and so underused on BTVS. Thanks for reading.

Puff

Hey Puff. I’m glad you enjoyed this bit. Hopefully I won’t be on hiatus again any time in the near future. I enjoyed writing the piece about Jo/Dani meeting Buffy. I think an outside perspective on the Scoobies and the Slayer is interesting. The thing about Anya is that while she is blunt, she’s also observant. She just has so much life experience – so much potential. Yet there are almost no Anya-centric episodes; it’s annoying to say the least. Thanks again.

tiredsoul

Hey Celia. :dance My Anya is the humorous one from BTVS but she’s also a bit deeper; I hope I can continue to write her well. As for Willow in leather … yum. :p Thanks sweetie.

Cindy Lou Who

Hey Suse. I like your selection of “awkward(ness)” to describe this update. There was a lot of tension at that picnic. It’s not too apparent when you view it - I detect it mainly in the physical distance between each person, and their postures - but if you add in what the characters are saying…. I simply expanded on that; it didn’t take much extrapolation to pull those tensions out into the open. Dani and Jo were particularly useful for that; they’re new and don’t fit the established dynamics of the group. The Scoobies up to this point rarely disagree with Buffy - but Dani doesn’t know that. As for Jonathan, I’ve mentioned before that if I’d written this pre-Season Sux, he might not be so menacing. To me, the Jonathan who walked away at the end of “Superstar” on the show doesn’t really make sense as a member of the Troika, unless something really major happened in the intervening year. But we have no hint at all of that happening in canon. So I needed to make Superstar Jonathan fit in the Troika. By expanding on his nebbish persona of S1-3 and doing a bit of character study of the Troika Jonathan, I think it’s clear how my Jonathan ended up with Warren and “whatshisname”. All of which is a ramble on what you said – yep, the foreshadowing was intentional. Thanks for reading.

singgirl

Hey Bev. I’m always delighted to make your day. Thanks.

mollyig

Hey Molly. Sorry to hear you’ve been busy, but I can only hope it’s busy in a good way. I’m glad you’re liking the development of Jo and Dani’s relationship. It’s fun having another relationship to contrast with Willow and Tara. They face many of the same hurdles, but they take them in totally different ways. Thanks again.

MadeinNZ

Hey Nicky. For Kittens it seems that tension is as big a hit as angst and sex. Which is good, since NMR and to a lesser degree WTWTA are full of tension and angst. But don’t worry, the contact won’t be negligible (in other words, I won’t leave the sex out.) Thanks sweetie.

tarasxtraflamey

Hey Ashley. What a great compliment … that you became a member just to post feedback. That bit about being mad cool, well, I’m probably quite mad but I’m not so certain about the cool. And you have to read some of the other fics! There’s just so much Willow/Tara goodness on Pens, you’ll be kept entertained for months! Check out this thread pub106.ezboard.com/ftheki...=565.topic

And thanks for reading.

Lt Sticks

Hey Sticks. Lurkers and former lurkers are always welcome! S4 is probably my favorite season – there is just something bright and wonderful about Willow and Tara’s relationship at that time. Thank you for the great comments.

The Pineapple Head

Hey Diana. You’re not a bad fan … there are no bad fans. Since I’m working within S4 canon, I don’t have to worry too much about the plot. I know – and you all know – what is going to happen plotwise in the overall story. That lets me concentrate on the details and characterization, which in turn drive the subplots. I’m incredibly grateful to Aly and Amber for having done such a fantastic job developing the early relationship between Willow and Tara. I shouldn’t really neglect the remainder of the cast because the characters they played have also been essential to my story. They’ve done such a great job that keeping my versions in character hasn’t been much of an issue. Thanks.

Grimlock72

Hey Grimmy. I agree that there are several folks who are unhappy with Jonathan getting away with things. But … what could Buffy do really? He’s human – she can’t kill him. The only other options involve organizations that she distrusts (or worse): handing him over to 1) the Watchers’ Council or 2) the Initiative. Me, I think she should have allowed the monster to take him into the abyss. Now for the girls – they have earned some ‘fun-time’, but there are still a few things to resolve before they can get to it. Anya has Willow issues as late as S5 Triangle. They simply are not comfortable with one another. Willow doesn’t think Anya’s right for Xander, and Anya is far more threatened by Willow than she is Buffy. Willow is Xander’s oldest and best friend, and competition like that is often very hard for a new girlfriend to handle, without even bringing up the former demon issue. My take on Jonathan’s many “new enemies” is that they are mostly of supernatural origin, i.e. Sunnydale’s demon population. They just had their memories re-arranged by the paragon spell, and I rather doubt they’d be too pleased with the sorcerer who did it. I’d get out of town too if I were him. Thanks again.

The Edge of Silence - Chap 8g: Be My Blanket

Postby Triscuit7 » Mon May 05, 2003 8:35 pm

Hey Kittens :kitty :kitty

Fur-kid update: we go to an oncologist at VHUP with Macbeth tomorrow AM. The preliminary diagnosis is an inoperable tumor in one of his sinuses, but we'll know more by the afternoon, and of course, we'll keep y'all informed.

I finished the update, Darcy did the beta and we're a day early. Given the nature of S7.20, I had hoped to have much W/T smuttiness to give you. Um, I don't - not in this one. But the ones after this should be overflowing with such fun.

Rating: G - PG

Angst level: high, 8+

****

Buffy gazed off across the quad, not really watching Willow, although her eyes tracked her anyway. She’d hoped that once she’d dealt with Jonathan and the spell faded that things would get back to normal. But it all still felt wrong. Except for Riley – that was feeling really good again.

She heard Xander sigh and looked towards him just in time to see him shake his head. Oh, great. She tensed slightly – she hated criticism, and criticism from her peers was the absolute worst.

“Buff, don’t you think you were a little harsh?”

She lifted her chin and stared at her second oldest friend in Sunnydale. “No, Xander, I don’t. I’m the Slayer - and it’s supposed to be a secret.”

“Just like the Initiative,” Riley interjected with a nod toward Anya.

Buffy jumped on that. “Yes, just like the Initiative. You and Willow found out about me – and the Initiative – by accident, and you shouldn’t be wandering around just telling people about us.” She glanced at Anya, suddenly aware that the ex-demon wasn’t precisely ‘people’ – she was more like a Scoobie auxiliary than just ‘people’ – but hurried on before the former demon had a chance to say anything. “Willow shouldn’t be telling Tara’s friends about me or about the Scoobies.”

Xander started to say something, then hesitated as he glanced between Riley and Anya, and Buffy decided to stop the conversation before it turned into an argument. She stood and gave Riley her hand to pull him up.

“Xander, think for just a moment. I’m the Slayer, the chosen one. I hunt and kill the vampires and you know something? It works because it’s a secret. If everyone knew, then I’d be a celebrity and people would die trying to watch me Do My Job.” She paused. “It sucks, I don’t like it, but someone has to do it.”

She tucked her arm in Riley’s and together they walked away.

****

As they approached Health Services, Jo glanced warily at Dani for the third time. It had not been the most comfortable walk she’d ever had. Given a choice, she’d rather hike naked during mosquito season than have a repeat of this one. Although she wasn’t in the best of moods right now – in fact, she was really pissed off – she thought what she was feeling was comparatively minor. ‘Chilly’ and ‘awkward’ were the two nicest words she could find to describe her companions.

Tara was walking with her arms clasped over her bag, pressing it tightly to her chest – god, she hated it when Tara retreated like that! And Dani … Dani was all but stomping, her lips pressed so tightly together that they were barely visible.

“What?”

The howl of a blizzard was a warmer sound than Dani’s voice. Just great. Jo considered evasion for just a moment, but that really wasn’t her. She glanced once more at Tara, who was wrapped even tighter now. “I was just checking to see if you’d exploded yet.”

Dani stomped to a halt and glared at her.

She could feel the intensity of the look through the mirrored lenses, but didn’t flinch. Tara, on the other hand, was threatening to disappear into her bag. She reached out and tucked her arm through the blonde’s elbow, ignoring the girl’s automatic flinch from contact. Her arm trembled once, then it seemed that Tara accepted her gesture for what it was … reassurance.

“But I can see now that you haven’t. Could you give us some warning so we can dive for cover when the explosion is imminent?”

Dani whirled and stalked towards their destination, and with a little tug Jo pulled Tara along in her wake. The silence lasted just a few moments.

“She’s the one Willow thinks can find Sarah?”

“Uh-huh,” Jo confirmed, although now she had her doubts how much help Buffy could be. Whether Buffy would help at all seemed to be a real question.

“She doesn’t look like much.”

“No,” she replied, “but she’s possibly bitchy enough.”

“She is that.” Dani had reached the steps to Health Services and turned to wait for them. “I don’t see what she can do, though. She’s so small and ….”

“Sh-She’s the S-S-Slayer,” Tara stuttered as they caught up.

“Whatever that means.” Dani’s tone was brusque and made Jo wince. “It’s not as though she can do anything,” she repeated, then added in a low mutter, “Or as if she would.”

That was what Jo had been thinking for much of the walk. She sighed in irritation.

Tara unfolded her arms suddenly. “No, you’re wrong. She will. It’s what she does. She’s the Slayer.”

“Then why did she let Jonathan go?”

****

The question struck her speechless again because it came from Jo, not Dani. Had it been Dani, she might have been able to answer.

But not Jo.

Coming from Dani, that question would have been just a momentary lashing out. Her anger was distant and focused primarily on what had happened to her and what could be done to fix it. It didn’t feel personal, because she didn’t really know Dani.

But Jo had been there with a helpful hand when she’d moved in, and had persisted in chattering at her through her long silence. Blunt, overly curious, Jo had all but thrust herself into her room to help with the painting. And she hadn’t given up after that first day, and was always there with a cheery hi or a soft good night.

There had been that pizza party in the common room at the end of September – Tara hadn’t wanted to go, but Jo had not only insisted but had stayed by her side the entire evening, fielding most of the questions, but encouraging her to join the conversation. When she had found Jo sobbing in the restroom in October, finding out what had happened and helping her had been vital. Tara couldn’t remember ever talking so much to someone who wasn’t her mama. But she had talked until the tears slowed and Jo could tell her what was wrong.

“Then why did she let Jonathan go?”

From Jo that question struck all too close to home, opening areas she didn’t really want to look into.

Because I’m nobody?

She had talked at Jo for hours that night, but had kept so much secret. No one in Sunnydale knew about the Maclay women.

Because I’m a demon?

No one in Sunnydale knew about her father and her brother.

Because I’m evil and deserve to be hurt?

She knew Jo. Jo had a good heart. She never doubted that Jo liked her, and she thought that Jo probably thought of them as friends, as she did herself.

Buffy was Willow’s friend, though, and while she had the little protection kit Buffy had given her, did that prove anything?

Did Buffy like her, or was she just hoping again?

If she was right, and Buffy did care, then why hadn’t she done more? Why had she made that comment at the picnic, that Jonathan had hurt Xander most of all?

She looked up the steps to the doors to Health Services. Xander wasn’t standing here … she was. She was the one that Jonathan had hurt, and that had been dismissed by everyone except Willow and these two girls.

That had hurt.

She had talked Willow out of taking revenge, but Buffy was the Slayer. Why had she just let Jonathan go?

****

One look at Tara and Jo regretted her angry question immediately. She squeezed the girl’s arm gently. “Hey, uh, look … um, maybe Buffy couldn’t do anything. Maybe there’s a rule that we don’t know about.” Well, that sounded totally lame, but she just couldn’t stand Tara looking like that – like no one gave a damn about her.

Tara’s blonde head slowly lifted. Jo looked into blue eyes that seemed suddenly to be deep pools of loneliness and pain – God, what had happened to Tara in her short life to have eyes that held so much? Her neighbor’s full lips quivered once, then firmed, her nostrils flaring as she held it all in. Jo felt the muscles in Tara’s arm tighten and let the girl pull away without a protest.

Jo bit her lip and watched as head down, bag tight against her – protection from everyone – Tara passed Dani and climbed the steps.

Dani lifted her glasses and tilted her head towards the blonde witch questioningly.

Heedless of the fact that others were about, Jo embraced her friend and lover. Dani’s arms surrounded her and held her. It was for a moment only. As they separated, Jo whispered softly, “She hurts so much.”

“Yes.” Dani gripped one of her hands; together they followed Tara up the steps.

****

Anya tilted her head to one side. “I’m not just ‘people’, am I?”

Xander shook his head. “No, you’re not, and Buffy knows it. You’re my girlfriend. Who just happens to be an ex-demon. Which is a problem.” He clenched his fists in exasperation.

She was a problem?

“It is?” she asked hesitantly.

“Yes, it is, ’cause with Riley sitting there, I couldn’t say anything back. I like him, I think, but I don’t trust that Initiative he belongs to.” He slipped his arm around her shoulders and gave her a little squeeze.

“Oh.” She curled up against him, practically purring.

“I just don’t know what’s wrong with Buffy these days … it’s not like it used to be.”

No, it certainly wasn’t. Anya smiled in contentment, rather pleased by that thought.

****

The Health Services waiting area was full of students, but fewer than she expected for early afternoon. Jo surveyed the room but there weren’t three seats together. Well, that could be fixed. “I’m going to get us some seats.”

“Tara, why don’t you go with her? I can sign us both in. Okay?” Dani turned without waiting and charged up to the desk.

After a quick glance at Dani’s back Tara’s gaze dropped again to the top of her bag.

Jo sighed, and winced as Tara’s head came up. Idiot.

“I-I-I’m s-s-s-s-….”

She shook her head vehemently. “No, don’t be. You didn’t do anything. I think it’s just that being here is hard for her. That’s why I sighed.” She slipped her arm through Tara’s again. “Let’s get seats. It’ll actually be easier with you than by myself – it looks more believeable.”

Blue eyes met hers and Tara nodded.

Jo glanced one more time around the room and selected her target – not too nerdy, not too good-looking, just an average guy with a bandaged wrist. Tara lagging just a little behind her, she walked up to him. “Excuse me, but – would you mind moving over one so that I can sit here with my girlfriends?”

He looked up at her and Tara, and she could see his lips move over the word ‘girlfriends’. Plural. “Uh, sure.” He blushed slightly as he stood up and shifted over one chair.

“Thanks.” She smiled her best friendly smile, and releasing Tara, settled in beside him, letting her neighbor have her choice of seats. The blonde hesitated just a little, then sank into the chair beside her, rather than the end one. Hmmm – she would have lost a bet on that. She’d thought end chair in the corner for sure; instead, she and Dani would be separated.

Dani crossed the room and flung herself down. “There. That’s done.” Her lover had slipped her shades off completely and stowed them in their case. She slid it into her pack, then settled into a more comfortable position.

“How long?” Jo wondered aloud.

“Could be a little while. The nurse practitioner gave me a bit of a problem; she wasn’t happy with my choice of doctor.” She patted Tara on the shoulder. “Actually, she just didn’t want to give you the same doc.” Dani grinned. “But I said that Dr. Green would want to see her, too – and it worked.”

“I d-don’t w-w-w-want to c-c-cause a problem.” Tara’s voice was almost inaudible.

“You’re not,” Dani assured her. “Not only can you tell him the truth, he’s the best one here. So now we can just kick back and relax.”

Jo didn’t think that would be easy for Dani, and she didn’t think it would be possible for Tara at all. She bit her lip. But agreement would be easier.

“Uh-huh.”

****

Buffy knew she really should be going to class but … this just felt so good. It seemed like it had been forever instead of just one week. Her lips left his for a moment. “I’m glad we talked this all out.”

“We haven’t talked at all.” Riley’s objection lacked force.

“Oh. Well, whatever we’re doing, we’re doing it great.” Really great. They kissed several more times. He was just the best kisser; she could feel his kisses all the way to her toes. But there was still a little matter of karma …

“Mmmmm … Jonathan.”

****

Their seats in the waiting room offered a very good view of the access back to the examination rooms. Tara divided her attention between watching that, listening to Jo banter with the boy she’d moved, and worrying about this doctor.

Why did Dani want her to see this doctor? She sneaked a peek at Dani, but the brown-haired girl had her eyes closed. Not sleeping … just trying to relax. Oh, right – with all the bad associations of healing from the vampire’s attack, coming here had to be fairly traumatic for her.

But what had she meant by saying “you can tell him the truth?” Did Dani really mean that Dr. Green knew a vampire had attacked her? Because that contradicted what Willow had told her about the level of denial in Sunnydale’s population. From what Willow said, it was always “gangs on PCP” and “neck trauma”. “Neck trauma” would be suitable medical terminology for a vampire bite – if a bit on the vague side.

So could she tell him about the monster?

****

Tara wasn’t alone in watching the access into Health Services’ interior. Jo’s male companion had been called back, and she’d been devoting her entire attention to surveillance of that area and the people moving within it. It was fun watching them and trying to figure out who they were in the general scheme of things. Dress was a big key, but so was body language. Some – mostly women, occasionally in white but mostly in colors – were apparently nurses or nurse practitioners. They usually deferred to the people in white coats, both men and women – presumably doctors. The students were the easiest to pick out, of course – partly because there was no respect for anyone at all, but mostly because their street clothes were a dead giveaway.

She watched as someone new came out of the back and collected a pair of files – one thick, one thin – from the receptionist. Male, on the plump side, and with a slight limp. Although he was dressed in green scrubs, the receptionist’s manner was totally deferential. He glanced quickly at the files, then looked over at them.

Oh. Even across the room she saw his lips twitch as he caught her looking and waggled his eyebrows at her. She started to giggle but covered it with a cough. She reached behind Tara and tapped her girlfriend’s shoulder.

“Uh, Dani – does Dr. Green wear green scrubs?”

“Yeah, all the time,” Dani answered, opening her eyes and following her gaze. “He has a somewhat warped sense of humor.”

“W-W-W-Warped?” Tara asked nervously. She glanced over at the doctor, who was still watching them.

“Yeah, it’s why he wears the green scrubs – he loves puns. A lot of them are really lame, too.” Dani stuck her tongue out at him and he shook his finger at her before turning back to a nurse to give her instructions.

“‘A pun is the lowest form of humor – unless you think of it first’,” Jo quoted with a grin at her girlfriend.

“Tara Maclay. Danielle.” The doctor called them with a resonant, slightly accented voice, and as her companions stood and started toward him, he pointed at her. “You, too.”

Jo’s eyebrows lifted in surprise, but she clambered to her feet and followed.

****

Willow listened to the professor with just a tiny part of her brain, grateful that this was math; she could do math in her sleep. Most of her brain was busy with other stuff.

Mostly, it was busy with Tara. Her hand automatically wrote her lover’s name and began to doodle around it. She wanted to be with her, and she wanted to be with her now. She should be with her now. Not Jo, not Dani – she should. Instead, here she sat in class. Old Reliable.

She didn’t know yet how Buffy had defeated the monster, but she had done nothing to Jonathan himself – and she should have. What, Willow wasn’t really certain, but surely Jonathan shouldn’t have gone free. If she were the Slayer, she wouldn’t have let him go. Her pen stabbed into the paper as she drew a crude figure shot full of arrows.

And what was that comment at the picnic about? So what if Xander’s ego was a little bruised? Physically, Xander hadn’t been hurt at all! It was always poor Xander. Yes, he was her oldest and bestest friend, but since graduation it seemed all he could do was whine. It was beginning to be annoying.

Why had Buffy ignored Tara’s injuries?

Did Buffy resent her friendship with Tara? It wasn’t like she and Buffy were hanging out together constantly like they did in high school. Buffy hadn’t had time for that since she and Riley got together or … had that happened even before? She frowned; Buffy had grown distant when Oz had left. Willow blinked hard, her nose and eyes burning suddenly with unshed tears, and she could feel her pulse pounding in her head.

Amazing.

Who would have thought that over 4 months later she would still ache?

Yeah...lots of Tara alright. To bad it's not a very happy Tara, feeling alone like that...boooohoooo :(

I liked Willow's drawing by the way :-) Indeed there isn't much Buffy could have done to Jonathan really (maybe have his power bound by Willow and Tara??). What bothers my most about Buffy is her attitude of not explaining WHY she didn't do anything to him and just let him go. It's like she doesn't care what he did.

I'm not sure Buffy views Tara's injury the same as Willow does, maybe she thinks it was more of scratch and a lot of scaring. Then again I'm not sure she cares that much about it either. This chapter does a way better job of making _Yoko Factor_ with the scoobies splitting up and such believable. I always had problems really relating to that split up since I appearantly missed the build up on TV. I think on BtVS Tara's injuries were less severe though, they were not mentioned again as far as I know.

I suppose I should be thankfull to Jo for being Tara's friend before Willow was around and trying to push her towards more social activities and such. At least she tried with the best of intentions, a good friend indeed.

Dani was a bit disappointing in appearantly not wanting to talk her discussion with Buffy and her feelings behind it. It's obvious she's storing lots of anger inside, which can't be good. Would be nice if she would at least talk to Jo about it.

And yes, Willow would of course like to be with Tara when she has to visit the docter but she also has to attend some classes at least :) . Though I doubt she'll be able to concentrate much :-)

Hi Melissa :) As always it is great to read one of your updates. I love the characters you give us. Both the well loved scooby gang that I know so well and Jo and Dani seem so real to me. It's because of how you describe them and the emotions you empower them with.

I also really like how you make me think when I read one of your updates. Here we have Buffy describing why being a slayer is a secret.

Quote:
If everyone knew, then I’d be a celebrity and people would die trying to watch me Do My Job.

And you know I've never really looked at it that way. I always thought it people found out then they'd want to try and fight as well...like Willow and Xander. But I imagine with Buffy's ego that she sometimes has going that this is indeed how she would picture the slayer gig. It was an interesting insight into the character of Buffy.

So anyway on to this update. I am sure I felt myself curl up with Tara (and not in the nice way either), but I think I physically shrunk down in my seat whilst reading this. How she see's herself as basically worthless is heartbreaking to read. I really wanted Willow to run out of her maths class and be with her. Although it is wonderful to read that Jo and now Dani are both such supportive friends.

I really want to say how much I appreciate you writing about the parts of Tara's past that were so painful. I imagine that it is very hard to write. So thank you for including it as I love the prespective that you bring to it and the emotion that you write with.

Ok this sounds like a whole lot of hero worship so I'll stop here. But thank you for this update and this amazing story. I went back and re-read the whole thing recently and it really is a joy.

Cheese. It's milk that you chew.

Great Update! The fact that Buffy didn't try to do something about Jonathan's powers has always bothered me. I too find it difficult to believe that she didn't work with Giles, Willow and Tara to try to bind his magic. I frankly disliked Jonathan after this ep. He seemed to have no remorse for what he had done nor the people he hurt like Tara and Karen. He also didn't seem to care about the epople he manipulated. However, this seemed to come out of the blue for me in the show. Your build up of Jonathan was much better. You are not only filling in the blanks but makning improvements IMHO. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about your cats. A similar thing happed tomy dog and it's hard to see a beloved pet sick.

Ah, Mel... I have finally returned from my grad school-induced lurkdom. Did you miss me? :shy

First off, my good thoughts are with you and Darcy and Macbeth. I hope he's doing better soon.

Second, I loved your last few updates. :D I so enjoy going back to these season 4 episodes in so much more depth.

And Go Jo! :heart *sigh* How I adore her... but you already knew that.

It's so good to be back on the board! I missed everyone here.

Hi Mel,

This was an interesting chapter. Tara's insecurities resurfacing as a result of Buffy's comment. It's also caused Willow to be irritated and to begin questioning Buffy's behaviour in depth.

Jo's empathy toward Tara was great. Even though they've only recently become friends, her unquestioning support works well when compared to how the self-absorbed Buffy is treating her friends.

Hope you got good news on Macbeth.

Take care.

Hey Mel, loved the update. I always thought that Willow never showed enough annoyance at Buffy in S4, so I liked how you portrayed her irritation at her supposed best friend

Wonderful Melissa. It doesn't take much for Tara to retreat back into herself. Two steps forward and one back. She was still so unsure of herself back then. Its a reminder of how much she progressed over the series.

And I loved the reference to Dopplegangland. The 'Old Reliable' exchange in that episode was hilarious (plus SMG was wearing kick ass sunglasses). And that leads me to Willow in leather ... which is all good.

Dani and Jo, they are just great characters, its fascinating to see Tara's life beyond the Scoobies. And I so feel for her with the insecurities and self doubt flooding back.

Oh, and what Nicky said about Willow in leather, yeah that's definitely good!

Hey Melissa, :wave

This was another great update. Everytime I read about the way Tara views herself, it just makes my heart break all over again. It really is an amazing transformation to the character that walked onto the scene in Hush, quiet & doubting to the confident & self assured character she began. I think that simply is a testiment to what can happen to a person when they are truly loved. No matter what opinion of yourself you have, you tend to have doubts at some point, but when the person you love thinks you're amazing & loves you back, it just changes things.

I was really hoping that Willow would ditch that ridiculous math class and go be with her girl. I think it would have settled Tara down considerably to know that she came first will Willow. But showing that Willow is torn is important to the upcoming "New Moon Rising" scenes. Willow was thinking of her and wished she was there. It's very evident in your writing just how much Tara is in her heart.

Thank you for writing this story and I can't wait for more. More of everything...the drama, the comedy, the angst and most importantly the x-rated W/T lovin' :p :drool :thud :eek

Feedback - The Edge of Silence - Chap 8g: Be My Blanket

Postby Triscuit7 » Sun May 18, 2003 6:05 pm

Hey Kittens :kitty :kitty

I'm just stopping by with some feedback thank-yous and an update on Macbeth. He has completed his first week of radiation therapy. While he's been happier, we're not feeling quite the degree of guilt we were on Monday/Tuesday when we were questioning our decision to proceed. Much of that was due to his extremely sedated state (the vets had a lot of stuff to do to him on Monday). The treatments themselves require far less sedation and the anesthesia actually makes him hungry - which is good since his appetite has dropped off. So we have 9 trips to go and then he'll be much more comfortable. Thank you all for your good wishes.

some dark thing

Hey there. There is quite a lot happening in S4 with Buffy and not all of it is good for the Scoobies. Part of it is that “growing-up thing” you do when you go to college. Add to that the fact that she has saved the world several times (as Riley says, “I find myself needing to know the plural of apocalypse”) and that she has out-lived her destiny, and you get someone who’s starting to believe the Legend - and it’s starting to go to her head. In previous seasons, you didn’t get that sense of “I’m right (no matter what) because I’m the Slayer” that you get from S4 onwards. Thanks for reading.

nika

Hey nika. I’m glad you’re enjoying “Edge”. And one more time: writing that closet scene gave me many a sleepless night. Thanks.

Tarasxtraflamey

Hey Ashley. Yep, there was lots of Tara in this last update and only a little Willow, a situation I hope to rectify before I post the next part(s) – I’m still writing them, so we’ll see how it breaks. It may be two regular-sized updates or one long one. Thanks for reading and the good wishes for Macbeth.

willntlover

Hey Will. I’m pleased you like how Dani and Jo are staying by Tara; she certainly deserves them. As for Willow – if I stick to the canon version of her character, she can’t cut class because her head would explode – she’s just anal that way. But rest assured she does miss her Tara. Thanks.

Grimlock72

Hey Grimmy. I like your idea of binding Jonathan’s power, but this is S4 Willow and Tara. Tara is the more knowledgable, but she doesn’t think she’s powerful, and Willow can’t de-rat Amy. Together, their spells have had mixed success, so I’m pretty certain that they wouldn’t have been able to do the binding, and certainly wouldn’t have had the confidence to try. As for Buffy, well, she very rarely explains her actions; that’s just her character. It’s hard to tell how severe Tara’s injuries are from the episode. Abrasions and bruises on her right temple, collarbone/shoulder, and her knee (but you have to slow the tape down lots to see that) – those are apparent. I’m guessing also some bruises from when she is knocked to the ground. From her condition lying on the bed the next day, I’d also have to go with mild shock, which with the head bruise is the most dangerous of her injuries – all of this, of course, qualified by the fact that I’m no more a doctor than any of the paid BTVS writers. Why is Buffy dismissive? Perhaps simply because she views everything as it relates to her, and by comparison she has been hurt far worse herself and has healed. Of course, she has that Slayer healing thing working for her. It’s hard to say much except that the Buffy we see at the end of Superstar is incredibly self-centered. Thanks again.

Puff

Hey. :blush Okay, now you have me blushing from all your compliments. I find neither Tara nor Willow particularly ‘fun’ to write when they go off on one of their introspections. But it’s necessary to write them as they are and as they were; otherwise they are simply cardboard versions with the same names. With Buffy and her thoughts on being a Slayer, I went all the way back to a S1 episode, the one with Owen, “Never Kill a Boy on the First Date”. Owen was a hunk (at least to Buffy and Cordy), a nice guy, and when he found out about her, he thought being in danger was cool. From the way the script is written, he seems to want to help, but I get the feeling that he also wants to watch. Buffy breaks off the budding relationship when she realizes that being around her would get him killed. That’s where that whole spectator bit came from (together with that bit of mother-daughter bonding in Gingerbread). Thanks.

sam7777

Hey. Before season 4, there were times when I felt sorry for Jonathan, e.g. when Harmony suggests him as a date for Cordy after she breaks up with Xander (The Wish). He was the quintessential high school nerd, but the nerd I identified with was Willow – that was the nerd I was in high school, and college, and um, in grad school, too – in fact it’s probably who I still am when I’m not having a Tara-esque fit of shyness. Neither one of them is perfect, both do wrong/bad things, but the difference between them is that lack of remorse on Jonathan’s part. Willow felt immense guilt and remorse for the damage her spell did in “Something Blue”. Jonathan never seemed to feel remorse for his actions in Superstar, nor for anything he did while a member of the Troika. There are 2 points in his favor for S6 events: 1) he was upset by Katrina’s murder; and 2) he helps Buffy defeat Warren. But … as to Katrina, he was prepared to ‘use’ her (or another girl) after Warren finished - that should never be forgotten, and often is. He is a very scary ‘gray’ character in many ways. Thanks for reading.

LeatherQueen

Hey LQ! Yes, yes, I missed you (!!!) and many congratulations for surviving and excelling in grad school. I’m happy that you enjoyed the last few updates and that you still love Jo. Woo-hoo. Thanks, sweetie.

mollyig

Hey Molly. Writing S4 fic is interesting because I have to keep in mind how the characters are shown in later seasons. With Tara, there is her growing confidence in S4 juxtaposed with her uncertainties pre-“Family” and then the backstory that particular episode gives her. With that in mind, I find that I have to write her in S4 as if she sits on a see-saw, one moment confident, the next full of doubt again. Willow’s doubts about her sexuality are a little easier – they resolve themselves in S4, thank goodness. Buffy in S4 IS self-absorbed; she always was to some degree, but once she’s in college she can’t get her head past Riley and the Initiative. Thanks again.

Lt Sticks

Hey. Willow’s strength in S4 varies. She starts off confident, but when Oz leaves she crashes, and gets almost no real emotional support from the Scoobs. They just whine about her moping. It’s not until she finds Tara that she starts to grow in strength again. “The I in Team” is a pivotal episode for that. “Superstar” as shown is a setback IMHO; Willow lacks strength in it. She’s distressed by Tara’s injuries, but never quite reaches the irritated-at-Buffy stage that should be the natural outcome, at least until Yoko Factor. Thanks for reading.

singgirl

Hey Bev. Your feedback is always wonderful – so what if it’s a little late? Thanks again.

MadeinNZ

Hey Nicky. Tara is a complex character. So much of what she does is anomalous. She’s painfully shy, but goes out into the dangerous night of “Hush” to find Willow, to whom she’s never even spoken. When you learn more of her background in S5 “Family”, you realize exactly how brave she was to come to Sunnydale. Yes, she’s escaping the horrors of her family, but she’s doing it all alone – until she meets Willow. She has an incredibly good heart, but can’t find it in herself to trust the woman she loves with the secret of her demonic nature. Thanks sweetie.

Nix42

Hey Nikki. I know that BTVS couldn’t show every interaction that Buffy et al. had in college, but they could have had something! You know that Buffy and Willow and Tara had neighbors, but with very few exceptions, we never see it. I really am glad that you and the other Kittens like my original characters. And y’know, I’m wondering if having the name Nikki/Nicky equals a fixation for Willow in leather … hmmmm. Thanks for reading.

The Pineapple Head

Hey Diane. Kittens love angst almost as much as they love smut. I think it’s in the Kitten Board application :grin so as a Pens writer, I try to comply. Willow and Tara complement one another. Neither one has a particularly great self-image, but they each think that the other is wonderful – and that is what gives them strength. That’s how they begin to grow. If you tell someone something often enough you can usually make them believe it just a little bit – and that’s all it takes. Thanks again sweetie.

The Edge of Silence - Chap 8h: Be My Blanket

Postby Triscuit7 » Tue May 20, 2003 8:51 pm

Hey Kittens

Life here goes on except now I'm a bit under the weather :sob - antibiotics here I come. Macbeth was much more active after his treatment on Monday. We're feeding him with a syringe which isn't pleasant. He thinks all food tastes icky and given what's coming out of his nose, I'm not surprised.

Here's the update, a little later than planned. Why does that always happen?

Rating - PG for situations and language :)

Angst Level - Hmmmm, over 6, under 8?

***

Dr. Green led them back, down one short hall, then another. He hummed softly while he walked, a tune that Jo recognized from summer camp. A quick glance at Dani and Tara indicated that they knew it, too – at least she thought that was what Tara’s soft smile and Dani’s pained look indicated. Silently she mouthed “There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Liza …” and was nonplussed by Dani’s quick shake of her head.”

“Ah, y’all know the song?” His accent sounded distinctly southern.

Jo looked at Dr. Green, whose broad grin was making his gray eyes crinkle at the corners, and nodded.

Dani sighed heavily and muttered, “Now you’ve done it.”

“My dear Danielle, don’t be a spoilsport just because you don’t like to sing,” he chastised gently as he held open a door and gestured for them to go inside.

Okay, this was strange, Jo mused. This was the first time she’d ever been to Health Services as a group experience. But Dani led the way into the room without hesitation, so Jo followed, Tara sandwiched between them.

The room wasn’t an examination room; it was an office with several comfy chairs pulled together in a group, with a desk jammed up against a wall, well out of the way. It was as much a typical doctor’s office as Tara’s room was a typical dorm room. Eclectically decorated, it had some fairly standard art prints – both Monet’s Water Lilies and Klimt’s Kiss – but it also had a wide range of nonwestern art and fabric. Jo recognized the rugs as Navajo designs, and she was pretty certain that the fabric throws on the chairs were kente cloth. Various do-dads and thingamabobs cluttering the flat surfaces seemed to originate mostly in Africa and Asia. She rubbed the bridge of her nose reflectively. Who knew that last semester’s multicultural art class would come in handy so quickly?

“Here,” Dr. Green tossed a large pillow at her. “You get the floor and my patients get the chairs, as do I, since I’m the oldest.” He chose one and lowered himself carefully into it as Tara and Dani took the other two.

And closed his eyes.

They sat in silence for several minutes while Dr. Green apparently took a nap. Okay, this was even weirder. Although – this was still Sunnydale, after all. Given what she’d learned in the past week, why should anything surprise her? Jo finally couldn’t contain herself any longer; shifting on her pillow, she opened her mouth.

“You’re an impatient one, aren’t you?” Dr. Green observed, still with his eyes closed.

Jo’s mouth snapped shut. She looked around the room – again, this time finding a photo of the doctor and his family. A lovely African-American woman stood in the crook of his arm, his hand resting on the shoulder of a pretty young girl. His love for them was obvious from his posture and the gentleness of his gestures. It was sweet. Jo smiled reflexively.

“But you have a good, non-judgmental heart.” Dr. Green opened his eyes.

Although she was a bit confused – how had he known what she was looking at? – Jo replied with a larger smile. “They’re lovely; you’re very lucky.”

“I am, aren’t I?” he agreed without hesitation, and then leaned forward expectantly. “What’s your name?”

“Jo Hutchinson.”

He made a note on a sheet attached to the thick – Dani’s ? – file and then a second on the thinner one. “So – do you want to tell me why you’re here?”

The question was directed at her, not Dani, not Tara. Why she was here? Well, duh! ‘Because you invited me’ was the obvious answer, but was that what he was really asking? Did he maybe want to know what had happened? Or maybe he was just as strange as his behavior indicated and what he wanted was an existential answer – that whole “Why am I here?” thing … or maybe it was just …..

“But y-y-you already know.” Tara’s voice interrupted her scurrying thoughts and brought them to a limping halt.

The doctor nodded slightly. “You are correct, Miss Maclay, I do, but I often find it helpful to have a verbal explanation.”

Tara dipped her head in … what was that? Acknowledgement?

Jo looked back and forth between the blonde witch and Dr. Green. Dani looked a little surprised, too, but only a little. Okay – what was going on? And given that this was Sunnydale, and considering all that had happened in the past few days, what was the likelihood that it was a good something? Speaking up like that was usually not Tara’s style – unless she had good reason. Jo shifted into a better position – not that any getaway was likely to be fast.

“There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza ….” Dr. Green sang softly, waiting patiently for her answer.

“Answer him, Jo, or he’ll treat us to the whole song,” Dani advised as she settled more comfortably into her chair. “And although he has a nice voice, I have better things to do this afternoon than sit here.” One brow went up rakishly as she added, “And I think Tara probably has other plans too.”

“But not with you, Jo,” Dr. Green added with a grin that made his eyes dance, “with another girl, one with bright red hair.”

Okay – ignoring the how-did-he-know-that aspect – that was a bit pervy! Jo shifted uncomfortably; it was marginally ok for her to tease Tara, but neither of them knew this strange doctor. She glanced at Tara, certain the blonde would be aghast, but Tara simply sat there, both eyebrows raised and smiling slightly.

Dr. Green continued to sing. “There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole.”

How … weird, but if neither Tara nor Dani was worried…..

“I’m a friend,” Jo began hesitantly, “to both of them. And I told Willow …”

“Ah, that would be the red-head – which explains that damn tree I saw … go on,” Dr. Green urged, making another note in Tara’s file.

Saw? Jo shivered. Was nothing normal? Why hadn’t she followed her first instincts and placed the pillow nearer Tara and Dani? Safety in numbers and … and was he reading her mind? She took a deep breath and concentrated on not-thinking. “I told Willow that I’d come here with Tara, since she had class.” There – that answered the question.

“But not all of it,” Dr. Green observed, pursing his lips slightly.

“You know, you’re really starting to freak me out,” Jo blurted.

“I know. Sorry about that. Sometimes it’s useful.” Although delivered in an offhand fashion, his apology did seem sincere. “You answered why you’re here now, but why are you involved at all?” He returned to his song as he waited again. “There’s a hole in my bucket ….”

Jo looked at both of her friends, somewhat bewildered that they could be sitting here so calmly. And they WERE calm – relaxed and totally unworried, which was unnatural for either of them – while Dr. Green kept repeating that first line of the song over and over. She started to rise.

“Wait.”

There was an air of command about that word, and Jo found herself sinking back onto the pillow. She watched as Dr. Green rose and escorted Tara to a door that opened from his office into a real examination room. She could see it from where she sat. More-or-less typical Health Services room, but again, nicely decorated. It even had a butterfly mobile over the exam table. He pulled a set of scrubs from somewhere just inside the door and handed them over.

“Tara, there’s no reason for you to have to face the indignities of a gown –I personally hate the things. The scrubs are extra large, and I can examine your leg just as easily that way. I shouldn’t be very long – just get comfortable in there.”

The blonde nodded and Dr. Green closed the door.

“Okay, Danielle.”

“Yes?” Dani answered evenly.

“Would you mind waiting outside?”

Dani shook her head and left the room. Jo noted that her girlfriend was completely and totally compliant. Stepford Dani. She shuddered – now there was an unappealing image!

“Okay, Miss Hutchinson.”

“What are you?” Released, she surged to her feet, her hands balled into fists at her sides, but utterly uncertain what she was going to do. For that matter, could she do anything?

“I’m a Healer with a touch of Sight,” Dr. Green replied calmly, “who happens to have a medical degree. Both are erratic … fortunately.” He sank back into a chair again. He cocked his head, to all appearances an all-American middle-aged boy. Waiting.

“You read minds.” It was more an accusation than a question.

His salt and pepper hair flopped onto his forehead as he shook his head, “No. Not really. I get images and impressions sometimes. Mostly I just get emotions. I have to interpret a lot.” He hummed softly as he waited, his expectant gaze never leaving her face.

“Why fortunately?” She frowned. That hadn’t been the question she had been going to ask, but it would do, she supposed.

He answered with a question. “Would you want to know what everyone was feeling all the time, Miss Hutchinson?”

“Okay, you have a point, but I would think that being able to Heal all the time would be a good thing.”

“It would be if it had an on/off switch, but it doesn’t. Magics usually have a price attached. When it’s there I have to use it; if I ignore it, the need to use it builds until it feels like a full-body migraine. It doesn’t feel particularly pleasant, but obviously there are times when I cannot or may not act.” His gaze dropped to the folders as he added, “Among other things, I have no intention becoming a rat in a government laboratory.”

“Oh,” Jo felt a bit overwhelmed. “Sorry.”

“You are,” he acknowledged, scrutinizing her from beneath thick brows, “But it’s not like you did anything.”

She shrugged, silently agreeing.

He had the next question. “So why is a nice, normal, milk-fed girl like you involved with a witch – maybe two – and a vampire’s leftovers?”

“They’re my friends.”

He leaned forward, focusing intently on her. “Are they? By your own words earlier you have doubts of that. You said you’re a friend ‘to’ them. That implies a certain one-way nature in the relationship and makes me wonder why you are involved.”

That was as pointed an attack as she could ever remember receiving from Dani. Jo trembled with anger. “I would do anything for them,” she snapped. Even as the words left her mouth she wanted them back, suddenly afraid of what Dr. Green might ask her to do.

“One of the things that constantly amaze me is how some innocent little thing, like a clothing choice, can reveal a personality.” He pointed at her ‘Just Do It’ t-shirt, and she automatically crossed her arms over the slogan. He just sighed and sat back in his chair, tapping his pen on the files in his lap for a few moments, before speaking again. “Jo, you have the wrong end of it. I’m not a bad guy. For that matter, I’m not THE bad guy, either. I’m just a doctor with a curious streak, who wonders why you are knowingly hanging out with these two girls. The fact that they’re together doesn’t surprise me overly much. Your presence, however, is anomalous. When I saw you in the waiting room, I thought of one reason right off – that you’re a danger junkie. But ...,” he held up a hand to quell the protest rising on her lips, “… you’re not, are you?”

“No.” Jo eyed him warily and then settled onto the edge of a chair opposite him. “I’m not. My first reaction to danger is to run the other way.”

“And yet….”

Jo interrupted, “They need a friend. They need me.” She took a guess and added, “And that’s what you wanted to hear.”

“Partly. But if you dislike danger …. You do realize that having witches and a vampire’s thrall for friends is going to put you right in the thick of it?”

That was definitely a question. Jo felt a lump rise in her throat and remembered her fear on Saturday night. She had wanted to leave – to run all the way to Wisconsin, to home – so badly then. Until she had realized that the danger was everywhere, not just here in Sunnydale.

Her answer was a hoarse whisper, “Yes.”

“Jo.” Dr. Green leaned forward, his boyish face serious. “The damage you can do to Danielle by leaving right now is minimal. If you have any doubts, if you want to bail – now is the time. Because your wording is correct; you are a friend ‘to’ her. She hopes for more but can’t quite believe in it … yet. Your leaving now would be a setback. It’d take a bit longer, but she would still heal. Later – it would be devastating.”

“And Tara?”

He sat back. “She has good shields.”

Jo frowned. “Which means what? You couldn’t read her mind?”

“No. It means just that.” Dr. Green paused and pursed his lips while he gazed at her, seemingly measuring her fitness and gauging her strengths.

“She needs me, too.” It was statement and question.

“She doesn’t need another betrayal,” Dr. Green corrected her mildly before continuing. “Doubtless, she’d survive it, but …..”

Jo interrupted. “I found her after the monster attacked her – well, actually some other students found her – but I sort of directed things. She was so afraid. She’s afraid of so much and is still so brave.” All she had to go on was an interest in pop-psychology in high school, but everything about Tara screamed abuse. She looked at the doctor, willing him to read her mind this time, but he simply continued to gaze at her.

“Patient-doctor privilege,” his voice was unequivocal, but that gave Jo her answer, confirming pretty much everything that she’d ever thought about Tara.

There was only one response that she could make and remain who she was. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m here for Dani – I’ve already told her that – and Tara, well, I’m here for her, too. I’ll be right there, like I’ve been from Day One.”

Dr. Green looked down at his lap for a moment before fixing her with his gray gaze. “It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood … a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine? Could you be mine?”

“Exactly” Jo confirmed, even as her stomach knotted with anxiety.

“It won’t be easy with Danielle.”

“I kn …..”

He shook his head. “No, you don’t, but The Powers That Be seem determined that I’m the one to enlighten you.” He rubbed his knee, the one that he limped on, as he spoke. “For what it’s worth, the modus operandi for most monsters, human or supernatural, is usually pretty simple. Killers kill, rapists rape. Some vampires feed and move on; that’s not good. Most feed, kill, and move on, and that’s worse. But, Jo, a few – fortunately, very few – like to play with their food. Danielle was unfortunately a victim of that last kind.”

“Yeah, she might have mentioned it.” Wow, that sounded incredibly snarky!

Dr. Green refused to be drawn. He continued, barely making a reference to her reply. “While I’m certain she told you about it, I’m also certain that she didn’t tell you everything.” He paused and stared at her intently. “She was completely under that vampire’s control, Jo.”

“So you’re saying Dani was Mina Harkered. That’s okay, I can work with that.” She nodded vigorously. She wished she felt as brave as she sounded. ‘Dracula’ hadn’t been nearly as scary when she’d thought it was fiction. Her fingers pinched the fabric of her t-shirt. She could do it.

Dr. Green shook his head, smiling sadly. “You think you can. But .….” The pause stretched on, and she finally got tired of waiting for him.

“But what?”

“So far as we know, that vampire is still out there. Its hooks are still in her, Jo, and you don’t know what that means.”

“You’re saying that when the chips are down she’ll head back to Sarah?”

“No, I’m saying that this vampire, Sarah, broke her. Danielle is like Mina Harker, but with a large dose of Renfield. The vamp controlled her, but Danielle was not entirely unwilling.” He didn’t look at all pleased to be telling her this. “In other words, Jo, if that vamp’s still in town and wants a new toy, she’d have very little difficulty persuading Danielle to take you to her. At this point in time, she is not a neutral party; she’s actively dangerous.”

Jo sat stunned.

“I thought you should know,” he murmured after several moments.

“She wouldn’t hurt me.” She sounded doubtful even to herself, so she tried again. “She wouldn’t!”

“She wouldn’t, all things being equal, but … with vampires, they aren’t. It would not be Danielle’s choice, but that vamp – Sarah – could coerce her.”

“Why should I trust you?” Jo demanded, aware that she was being rude, but no longer caring.

He sighed. “A. As I said, I’m not the bad guy here, although you have only my word on that – along with the fact that I am Healing Danielle, a bit more quickly than she would heal conventionally.”

Well, that was certainly true. Dani’s scars looked much older than two months. She sighed, accepting that Dr. Green was at least acting on the side of good. “I guess if that’s ‘A’, there must be a ‘B’?”

“There is indeed. B. Your choices are somewhat limited.”

That was a major understatement. Actually, they sucked beyond belief.

Dani wasn’t Parker Abrams, and wouldn’t leave her. But Jo could do it – she could leave. She could betray the other girl. That would be the safe thing. She was aware that a tear was sliding down her cheek, aware that her hands were trembling. She stared into her lap at them, willing them to stop. She could leave Sunnydale; there were other colleges. She could leave Dani and Tara and Willow and everything. But … he was wrong about Dani. He had to be.

There was another t-shirt slogan – No Fear; that would be handy. She looked up. “Can’t you do anything?” She wasn’t sure herself what she wanted him to do.

“I’m a Healer, Jo, not a miracle worker. Besides, fear is good.” Dr. Green drummed his pen on the files and gazed at her. “You have a good heart and you’re sensible.”

“Blame growing up in Wisconsin.”

“Ah, I was right then about the milk-fed.” He grinned briefly, then offered, “There are a few small things I can do, mostly on the order of strengthening your common sense not to go into basements and dark alleys and such. Mostly so that if you get a wiggins, you won’t be tempted to stupidity.”

“Dani and Tara … they need me. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I didn’t really think I could scare you off … much as I’d like to. Free will is a bitch sometimes.” He sighed. “And even if it might seem like a good idea, I won’t take anything away, just make certain things a bit … blurry.”

She really didn’t want him messing with her mind … she really didn’t. But … “Okay.” Her voice cracked a little. “What do I do?”

“Sit there and try to relax. My magics always work better if the patient is calm.”

Right. Sure. No problem. I can do calm, even though you just told me my girlfriend could feed me to a monster! Her thoughts skittering about, she forced herself to breathe deeply, until she at least appeared calm.

He sat quietly for another moment before picking up his song again. “With what shall I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza.”

Jo shifted again. She didn’t know what to expect. What did Healing magic feel like anyway? Would there be lights, like last night? At last she settled back in the chair, stretching her legs out and crossing her ankles; there was no reason she shouldn’t get comfortable while she waited for him to do something. That song was more or less interminable, but she listened to him sing it, verse after verse, as Liza and Willie discussed repairs and materials – from the straw, the axe, the whetstone, the water, all the way back to the hole. Dr. Green had a pleasant singing voice, the rhythms and words of the song were familiar, and repetitive or not, the childhood memories she had of it were all pleasant. The tensions she had felt earlier, along with her worries, slowly receded. As the song drew to a close she was relaxed and feeling pretty good.

“Jo …..”

“Mmmmm?” She looked at him with a smile.

“There’s no rush, but on your way out, please tell Danielle to come in.”

“Okay.” She watched him stand and cross the room to the doorway into the examination room. He seemed like a nice guy, pleasant and funny. All in all, she could see why Dani liked him.

****

Tara had closed the door behind her, the soft click it made registering distantly. She felt hazy and relaxed as she undressed and donned the soft baggy scrubs. Her apprehensions about coming to Health Services had vanished as soon as she looked at Dr. Green. Everything about him was contained; he fit within himself in a way that most people didn’t. He was the first Healer she’d ever met, and his energy was as strong and compassionate as that ability might suggest. She smiled to herself. He seemed an interesting man. She liked his office; with its eclectic mix of decorations, it felt personal rather than institutional. She also liked his sense of courtesy. It fit with her upbringing, and while she knew that it was because he had “read” her, she still appreciated the effort he made to be polite.

She slid up onto the examination table carefully. The scrubs were extremely oversized, but still much more modest than a gown. She wondered if all his patients got the scrubs or if he was just being sensitive to her own particular issues. It wouldn’t take much magic to sense that she had some. It didn’t really matter, but she was happier to be covered – and warmer, too.

Had he not been a Healer, Tara was certain that her anxiety over being at Health Services would not have receded. It was strange; he had been weaving spells around her and Jo and Dani from the moment he first spoke to them, yet she trusted him as she never would another magic practitioner whom she didn’t know. She trusted him as much as she trusted Willow. But then, he was a Healer, and by the laws that governed magic, he couldn’t be anything but good. Evil and Healing powers couldn’t reside in the same vessel; that was why so many saints were healers. She glanced at the door. Convincing Jo of that would be an interesting feat, but at least he was out there laying the groundwork.

She grinned. Poor Jo, getting all indignant because he’d “read” her desire to be with Willow as soon as possible. That he’d sensed Willow hadn’t been a surprise to her at all. Willow was her everything.

The doorknob turned and Dr. Green stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “You’re very lucky indeed, Miss Maclay, having a true love like Willow and a true friend like Jo. You’re far more fortunate than most of my patients.”

Tara’s gaze dropped to her lap but she smiled.

He pulled a stool up, but kept a comfortable distance. “Let’s get started making you as good as new. Tell me about this thing that knocked you about first, and then I’ll take a look at your ouchies.”

****

She closed the door and gently touched Dani on the shoulder. “Hey, sleepy-head.”

“Mmm, Jo.” Dani pressed her cheek on her hand. “Sorry, I guess I dozed off – happens every time I come here.”

She smiled at her girlfriend. “No problem. I just finished a few minutes ago. Dr. Green said you could go on in.” Her foot nudged the very institutional plastic and steel chair Dani was sitting in. “It’s much more comfy in his office.”

“Yeah.” Dani slowly rose to her feet. “Comfy chairs.”

“But no Spanish Inquisition.” Jo grinned and wrapped her arms around Dani.

“No, thank the gods. I’d probably get burned at the stake.” Very gently she kissed Jo’s lips, murmuring, “And this would get you a bonfire of your very own.”

“But it would be so worth it,” Jo whispered back. “I’m not going anywhere.”

****

“So, Miss Maclay, tell me again why you waited a day to come to Health Services.” Dr. Green dropped the pants leg he’d raised to look at her knee.

Tara squirmed a little on the table, unable to look at him, her heart beginning to pound. She’d had little difficulty answering any of his questions until this one, but now she just lifted her face and gave a little shake of her head.

“I’m guessing it’s related to those secrets you’re guarding,” he probed gently.

That was so close to her truths that she couldn’t control her face.

“Shhhh, it’s okay, just relax, sweetie. I’m not reading you right now. You get to keep those dark patches, but …,” he paused, his face utterly earnest, “if you need anything, anything at all, you come to me. Okay?”

She nodded, immensely relieved. Safe. It was all safe. The demon and her family, no one would know.

Dr. Green drummed his pencil on the file. “Tell me what you’ve done to treat yourself and what if anything you put on your injuries.”

That was an easy question. She began to talk.

****

Willow darted through the door into the Health Services waiting room. It was more or less on the way to Tara’s dorm, so there was no harm in checking to see if her lover had finished. It would only take a moment; if Tara had left already, she could hurry on. A moment’s survey located Jo, who seemed to be cat-napping in a chair, but no Tara or Dani. Did that mean Tara was finished but Dani was still inside? Willow approached the dozing girl and reluctantly woke her. “Hey.”

Jo looked up at her and yawned. “Willow. Your girlfriend and mine are still with Dr. Green.”

“Together?” Her eyebrows shot up.

“Uh-huh.” Jo nodded and yawned again. “I was there, too, for part of it. The information-gathering part. It was interesting, my first group session at Health Services. Kind of weird.”

“Oh.”

“Dr. Green is really good, though; he’s been Dani’s primary physician since she was hospitalized,” Jo reassured. She glanced at the clock over the doorway into the inner recesses of Health Service. “They shouldn’t be much longer; in fact, there Tara is now.”

Willow turned, a radiant smile blossoming on her lips as she caught sight of her love.

Jo chuckled. “Hey, don’t go all supernova on me, okay?”

She did, of course, but not on Jo; she was focused on Tara, who crossed the waiting room, her smile growing with every one of her steps. She needed her, needed to touch her, and smell her, and kiss her … it was incredibly difficult not to do any of that.

Tara’s hands trembled on her bag as she too ignored her impulses. “Hey.”

“Hey.” She could feel the ache she’d endured all through class slowly recede. They stood there, just basking in the glow of one another’s presence for a few moments.

“Um, I’m going to wait here for Dani,” Jo advised, grinning.

“Huh? Oh, okay.” Willow answered without even glancing at her.

“We’re going to have an early dinner, if you want to join us …..”

Willow finally looked at Jo, and started to answer, “Uh …..”

“No, I don’t think so, I h-h-have class at 5. Maybe tomorrow?” Tara made their apology.

“’Kay.” Jo accepted, yawning again, and then added pointedly, “You girls have fun.”

“We w-will.”

****

The walk back to her room was so filled with Willow-babble that Tara began to feel uneasy. It almost seemed like Willow was erecting a wall of words between them. Fortunately the walk was short, and the moment the door closed the redhead’s restraint disappeared. Willow filled her arms and she hugged her tight.

“I missed you,” Willow whispered into her neck; she could feel tears.

“Sweetie, wh-what’s wrong?” But Willow was silent, unable or unwilling to talk, and Tara would never force her. The words would come eventually, and she would be waiting. She caressed the silky hair on the back of her lover’s head. She wanted to do more, but the backpack was in the way. Her fingers found the padded straps and she eased them over Willow’s shoulders. As the pack dropped to the floor, she shrugged her own bag off.

There.

Her arms enfolded the redhead and they swayed together in silence.

Hi Mel, good to hear that Macbeth is on the mend, not so good that you're not so well. Hope you feel better soon.

The doctor is an interesting character, who obviously instills a lot of trust in his patients if both Tara and Dani feel so relaxed with him. His warning Jo was natural, he obviously sees how close she and Dani have become and is concerned for her.

It almost seemed like Willow was erecting a wall of words between them I liked this, as it shows that Tara knows Willow so well.

Thanks.

Hey Mel I hope you are feeling better soon. That was an interesting update. I like the doctor character and I thought it was really fascinating that he questioned Jo about her intentions towards Tara and Dani. I thought it was also really sad when he talked to Tara and she tried to hide things, he refered to them as dark patches. I guess I find this sad as I always like to think of Tara as full of light, but she can't heal the dark patches if she doesn't expose them. She protects her secrets well.

Like Mollyig I liked the last part about Willow using words to block her feelings in. I agree Tara does know Willow very well. Tara's desire to be with Willow as well was also great to read.

Thanks for the update :)

Hmm... yeah that doctor is interesting indeed. I'm not so sure how he actually "instills" trust though. Since he did lots of magic when the girls were in his room that might as well account for the trust as anything else.

Neutral at most, using spells on people without asking or telling them in advance doesn't qualify for 'good', no matter what the intentions are. I'm not to trusting yet, could be I'm selective in trusting magic wielders :D . (esp. ones which use their power on people without telling them in advance)

I'm liking Jo, which is surprising since I initially disliked her quite a lot. I guess I like fiery women who aren't easily fooled :-). I'm not so sure Sarah is still around, we haven't seen her in quite a while and we know she wanted to go away after robbing that poor soul's wallet.

I hope Tara will soon forget the monster's attack, don't want her to have nightmares for months. Not sure if I ever mentioned that but I was touched when Willow did her silent 'name-game' at night just after Tara had been attacked. Soooo sweet and sad at the same time :cry .

First, a Troll Hammer for you, Triscuit. It's big and heavy, but surprisingly useful when uninvited guests to your dimension kidnap your little sister. (-;

I liked the new character of Dr Green, his quirky personality and what he implies for how magic works. His need to use his healing reminds me of the healers in Gael Baudino's Strands of Starlight. His treatment of Jo is interesting and I liked how you tied in his worries about her being a danger junky with Buffy's statement that she needed people not to be around when she does her job in the last chapter, and yes, Buffy's besetting sin is the classic one of all heroes--hubris--and we all know how that ends.

I enjoyed your introduction of vampiric thrall into the Buffyverse with Sarah and Dani. It's always been one of the most intriguing of vampiric abilities and a way for vampires to be both interesting and dangerous foes instead of nuisances even a little sister can stake with a pencil of all things.

With every character you add and every consequence you fully explore, you make the world of post-high school Sunndydale more real than either fanfic or the actual show have made it and that's one of the reasons I love this story. The people around W/T not only exist, but they have lives that feel real and that's an impressive accomplishment.

Triscuit sweet biscuit of fic:

I know there are *worse* things than ailing human and recuperating feline. Or so I've been told.:) I hope you are soon on the mend...and MacBeth (Thane of Cawdor) continues to be on the mender.

Somewhere...somehow...I'm convinced Stoker rests in a finer peace thanks to you. Lost seductive Mina. And vacant voracious Renfield? Dani recombinant? Oh my soul.:(

Jo seems to take on a big part. I'm a shipboard gal. I see her as the vital tiller-and Tara the guiding hand in an approaching storm.

In any event I've lost track of Willow in these last updates. It's clear she misses Tara. Her silence is deafening me.:hmm

Loved the update, especially at the end, the depth of Willow's feelings. I don't think she's fooling anyone anymore, not even herself. I also loved how in public Willow feels the need for this wall. More and more it becomes an issue of closet for her. thanks for the update!

Ugh. Sorry I haven't left feedback in forever. I've been reading all along though and I think this just gets better with every update. I love the addition of Dr. Green. If there was ever a place for that kind of MD, it's in Sunnydale! And Dani as the vampire thrall, I never even considered what kind of danger Jo could really be in. Something else they should have played with more on the show maybe, but I'm excited to see you've thrown in that extra dimension. I just love Jo. So corn-fed. LOL!! It's nice to see an interesting character with those qualities. Trom ducks her head in the hopes Tulipp doesn't see this post and realize she's dissing Riley again. I'm intrigued by Willow's reaction at the end. Is she feeling just a wee bit guilty?
