Chapter 1: Pilot Episode, part A
The sun shone brightly through the bathroom window, and the birds could be heard happily chirping outside. Inside, Tara stood in her flannel blue pajamas, facing the mirror, but hardly concerned with the image reflected back. Instead, she was focused on the ovulation test she held in her hands. Looking up, she smiled and called out, “Willow, come here!”
“What?”
Tara glanced down at the test once more, still grinning, as Willow, entering, instantly reached out to hold the test with her girlfriend.
“You’re ovulating...”
“I’m ovulating,” Tara confirmed with a nod, looking into green eyes.
“Let’s make a baby...” Willow whispered, putting her hands behind Tara’s head to pull her forward. They shared a light kiss before Tara pulled back slightly.
“Let’s make a baby,” she agreed, leaning back in for another kiss, this time, a little more passionate. Willow licked at Tara’s lips, coaxing them open so she could enter the blonde’s warm mouth. It was a sweet kiss with no competition for dominance, Willow’s way of showing her lover how ready she was for this commitment. Before things got too heated, Willow remembered the time and pulled back.
“Why don’t you get dressed and I’ll drop you off on my way to work?”
Tara pecked the pouty lips in front of her a few more times before Willow finally turned and left, not looking back as she dutifully fought the desire starting to burn inside.

“Ugh, I am SO ready!” Alice Pieszecki, a thin journalist with short blonde hair and casual clothing, complained from her spot at the counter within The Planet.
Walking by, Marina Ferrer, the dark-haired owner of the West Hollywood café, chuckled. “It’s coming,” she reassured her friend in a heavy Spanish accent, just before the waitress behind the counter turned and gave her customer the order.
“Thank you,” the blonde sighed, exasperated.
Shane McCutheon, the skinny, slightly gothic looking girl slumped on Alice’s left, perked up from her tired state as the coffee was placed in front of Alice.
“Hi Shane,” a nameless female customer from across the café flirted obviously while waiting for her own order. Shane looked over, not really interested. Coming to her rescue, Marina informed the girl that Shane didn’t talk to anyone before her morning shot, which Marina then proceeded to hand over.
As Shane downed her drink, Alice could be overheard telling her other friend, Dana Fairbanks, the professional tennis player, but not yet publicly “out” brunette to her right, that it was just a kid hitting on Shane.
“Whatever...it’s fine,” Dana muttered, trying to hide her jealousy and seem convinced at the same time.
“Alright. Later guys,” she waved to her two friends as they shouted their goodbyes back. She turned to the girl who was previously flirting with her, walking backwards. Through the mob of busy people, Shane noted a pair of eyes fixed on her.
“Bye Lisa.”
“See ya, Shane,” the special recognition made her smile before she was forgotten once more.
Still back-peddling, the door behind Shane was pushed open by Tara and Willow, and the little bell hanging form the ceiling sounded.
“Whoa, whoa! You’re not leaving already?” Tara inquired while Shane fluently moved around her.
“Yeah, I’ve got nine o’clock, guys. See ya.”
The door closed behind her. The two girls shrugged, and with Tara in front, walked towards the table occupied by Alice and Dana.
Marina greeted the couple, handing Willow two to-go items. After taking the food and coffee, the redhead then leaned down to kiss Tara. The other girls shared a smile as they witnessed firsthand the rare, yet beautiful display of love. “I’ll meet you at the doctors,” Willow said quietly as they parted and Tara nodded. “Bye guys.” They waved to her retreating back.
“Oh my god, is it happening today?!” Alice gushed, too excited to care as Tara stole fruit from her plate.
“Is what today?” Dana jumped in, looking between the two girls, plainly confused but definitely interested.
“The insemination!” Alice rolled her eyes.
Dana processed the new information quickly, her eyes widening in curios excitement and a smile spreading across her face as it sunk in.
Tara confirmed the other blonde’s assumption before adding, “But first, Dan Foxworthy.”
“No way!” Alice looked perplexed
“Who? Why don’t I know what you’re talking about?” Dana desperately tried to keep up with the conversation.
“Because you don’t read!” Alice replied, clearly impatient for Tara’s explanation.
“Oh, and what are you, the intellectual of life?” Dana shot back, defending herself. Tara stifled a giggle.
Alice sighed, half-expecting the sarcastic remark from her friend, and decided she’d save everyone the trouble today by explaining the man’s identity. “Dan Foxworthy, is like, THE super exclusive shrink to the stars.”
Tara frowned at her, not expecting an exaggeration like that.
“He was on our list of L.A.’s best self-improvement guru’s,” Alice continued. Hearing that particular truth caused Tara to shrug. Alice looked away from Dana and to Tara, pausing a moment to spear another piece of fruit on her fork and place it in her mouth. “How did you get that appointment?”
“I just called and asked.” Upon seeing Alice’s reluctant acceptance of her answer, she added, “Don’t tell Willow I told you, ok?”
Dana shook her head, swallowing the food she had in her mouth. “But what are you guys doing? I mean, you don’t need a shrink!”
“We’re just checking in. We’re about to do this incredibly major thing.”
“But wait. You guys have the best relationship of anybody I know, gay or straight.”
“I just want to make sure we’re good,” Tara looked between her friends as if challenging them to say something else. When neither of them said anything more, she realized she had made her point.

The train station was exceptionally busy today, and the loudspeaker could barely be heard announcing the next departing train over the bustling of the many people. Jenny Schecter moved about nervously, pulling her rolling suitcase behind her as she looked around. Her dark brown hair was tied up in a messy pony-tail and her royal blue jacket hung loosely on her shoulders. She muttered a quiet, “Sorry,” as she accidentally bumped into a passer-by.
“Could I offer you a ride?” a male voice came from behind her.
Immediately recognizing the voice, Jenny turned to find Tim Haspel, a handsome brunette swim coach dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. With barely a hello, she reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck and jumped to kiss her fairly taller boyfriend.
“I missed you so much,” he sighed when they parted, his hands still grasping her small waist.
“I,” she paused, looking around the station, slightly embarrassed from their public display of affection, “missed you,” she finished, looking him in the eye.
“Is that all you have?” he motioned towards her two bags.
“That’s all I have,” she confirmed, surveying her belongings.
“I can’t believe you’re here...” Tim said quietly, chuckling lightly and grabbing her hand. “Come on!”
They left the train station hand-in-hand.

Tara sighed, crossing her legs as she sunk deeper into the large, black couch she was seated on. She looked around the office, realizing the time was passing fast.
Dan Foxworthy sat across from her in his comfortable-looking armchair, studying the blonde carefully. Through the wall-sized window behind him, the wind could be seen gently blowing through the palm trees. He tapped his fingers on the armrests of his chair. His continued stare and the deafening silence unnerved Tara a bit.
“She’s always running late,” Tara laughed nervously, hoping the excuse she supplied him with would be explanation enough. When he didn’t respond, she added, “She had a board meeting, and then she had a meeting with an artist...” she trailed off. Still no response. Clearing her throat, she began speaking once more, “Willow’s the director of the California Arts Center.” She wiped at her pants.
“I see.”
Foxworthy’s short response prompted Tara to continue, “And...she’s probably going to be really stressed about time. After this, we have to go get sperm. We’re trying to have a baby, and our friend Sean is donating...”
Fortunately, Willow chose that exact moment to come rushing in through the door, holding her cell phone with an attached ear piece leading up and into her ear.
“Sorry I’m late!” she instinctively said as she shut the door, failing to notice the uncomfortable silence between her lover and the shrink. “James? Yeah, I gotta go in a minute.” She took off her sunglasses, obviously talking on her phone.
“No no no! The artwork is way too delicate, it’s being flown in from Paris and Annie is already a complete and total nervous wreck.” She started making her way towards Tara, wildly gesticulating as she continued her conversation. “Just call Adam’s Fine Art Movers. Tell them if they want to do business with CAC again,” she paused, listening, “Exactly. Ok, great. Thanks, bye.” She hung up.
Foxworthy stood up, remembering to behave professionally, even though he really didn’t feel as if this woman deserved his respect. He extended his hand politely, but she whisked by him, unintentionally ignoring the disapproving looks she received from both her lover and the secretly appalled man in front of her as she sat down.
“Ok, here I am!” she unnecessarily announced, patting Tara’s knee lovingly and crossing her legs.
Foxworthy, remembering he was being paid for this, took his seat and began.
“Do you want to tell me what the thinking is behind trying to have a child together when you’re sexual relationship has been pretty shitty for going on three years?”
Looking to Willow for support, Tara turned back to Foxworthy, frowning. “It’s not shitty,” she protested. “It may not be perfect...”
“There’s a lot more to a relationship than sex,” Willow interrupted, shaking her head and smiling that ‘you know I’m right’ smile.
“We’ve been together for seven years,” Tara backed her lover up.
Foxworthy shrugged, “I know plenty of couples who still have sex after seven years.”
“Well, it’s not like we never have sex.”
“A lot of heterosexual couples have children when their relationships aren’t perfect.”
Willow’s phone started vibrating and she reached into her purse to retrieve it. “You know, you just obviously don’t understand what happens in a lesbian relationship,” she said, opening her phone to check the caller ID. “I knew this was a bad idea,” she continued, looking over at Tara. “You just...I don’t believe that a straight male therapist can possibly understand.”
Foxworthy smirked at them.
Inhaling sharply, he started, “Early sex is passionate. It’s exciting; still has that,” he faked a gasp, “factor, but,” he paused, smiling knowingly, “very quickly, a kind of symbiosis develops. It especially happens between two women who are doing the work of making a serious commitment to one another. And when that merging occurs, the intense mutual dependency can be a deterrent to sexual intimacy.”
“Oh my god,” Tara said, smiling as she made a connection to what Foxworthy was saying. “The...lesbian urge to merge!” she giggled, looking over at Willow to find her staring coldly at the man.
“We have to stop now.”
“Oh,” Willow simply said, standing up quickly, not bothering to mask her relief, and yet not stooping to openly display her excitement.
“Do you want to schedule another session?” Foxworthy asked, remembering the requirements of his job even though he knew the answer to that.
“Oh, we’ll let you know; I think Tara and I need to talk.”
Deciding to play dumb a little longer, he added, “But what about this insemination?”
“Uh, that’s not up for discussion,” Tara jumped in.
“Not up for discussion?” he said incredulously, suddenly slightly interested.
“No, it’s not,” Tara confirmed. “I quit my job; I was a pretty successful development executive. Now I want to relax and prepare my body for pregnancy. And that’s...what I’m doing. I’m ready to start a family.” She looked over at Willow before continuing, “We’re both ready to start a family. Right?”
“Absolutely.”
He nodded absent-mindedly, still wondering about how they managed to make it this far in their relationship.
“Ok, great!” Willow stood, collecting her purse and patting Tara’s knee again. They made their way to the door without another word, leaving a bewildered Dan Foxworthy behind.
