AU Fic w/ The L Word - Something Hard to Come By

Title: Something Hard to Come By

Author: Me!

Rating: NC-17 mostly for language and of course smut. I will provide appropriate warnings as they are needed.

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything from either Buffy or The L Word, nor am I making a profit for this; I’m just doing this for plain amusement. The script is from The L Word.

Spoilers: Pretty much the whole first season of The L Word, but nothing from Buffy except Willow and Tara’s relationship.

Feedback: Sure, why not?

Distribution: Anywhere, but let me know first.

Pairings: Willow/Tara mainly, and then other various pairings according to The L Word.

Summary: This is an AU fic set in the Showtime series, The L Word. Bette Porter and Tina Kennard are replaced by Willow and Tara. Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay have been a couple for seven years now, and they are finally ready to start a family. Next-door, their neighbor Tim Haspel is awaiting the impending arrival of his girlfriend, talented young writer Jenny Schecter, who is moving in with him. Soon, mixing with Willow and Tara’s group of lesbian friends, Jenny sees that she might not have been as prepared as she thought for what she will learn about life, lust, and love in Los Angeles.

Notes: This is my first fic, so please be gentle. Thoughts are in <>’s. Also, some scenes will be shorter than they originally are or completely cut from the actual show. Finally, Candace Jewel does not exist.

Chapter 1: Pilot Episode, part A

The sun shone brightly through the bathroom window, and the birds could be heard happily chirping outside. Inside, Tara stood in her flannel blue pajamas, facing the mirror, but hardly concerned with the image reflected back. Instead, she was focused on the ovulation test she held in her hands. Looking up, she smiled and called out, “Willow, come here!”

“What?”

Tara glanced down at the test once more, still grinning, as Willow, entering, instantly reached out to hold the test with her girlfriend.

“You’re ovulating...”

“I’m ovulating,” Tara confirmed with a nod, looking into green eyes.

“Let’s make a baby...” Willow whispered, putting her hands behind Tara’s head to pull her forward. They shared a light kiss before Tara pulled back slightly.

“Let’s make a baby,” she agreed, leaning back in for another kiss, this time, a little more passionate. Willow licked at Tara’s lips, coaxing them open so she could enter the blonde’s warm mouth. It was a sweet kiss with no competition for dominance, Willow’s way of showing her lover how ready she was for this commitment. Before things got too heated, Willow remembered the time and pulled back.

“Why don’t you get dressed and I’ll drop you off on my way to work?”

Tara pecked the pouty lips in front of her a few more times before Willow finally turned and left, not looking back as she dutifully fought the desire starting to burn inside.

---

“Ugh, I am SO ready!” Alice Pieszecki, a thin journalist with short blonde hair and casual clothing, complained from her spot at the counter within The Planet.

Walking by, Marina Ferrer, the dark-haired owner of the West Hollywood café, chuckled. “It’s coming,” she reassured her friend in a heavy Spanish accent, just before the waitress behind the counter turned and gave her customer the order.

“Thank you,” the blonde sighed, exasperated.

Shane McCutheon, the skinny, slightly gothic looking girl slumped on Alice’s left, perked up from her tired state as the coffee was placed in front of Alice.

“Hi Shane,” a nameless female customer from across the café flirted obviously while waiting for her own order. Shane looked over, not really interested. Coming to her rescue, Marina informed the girl that Shane didn’t talk to anyone before her morning shot, which Marina then proceeded to hand over.

As Shane downed her drink, Alice could be overheard telling her other friend, Dana Fairbanks, the professional tennis player, but not yet publicly “out” brunette to her right, that it was just a kid hitting on Shane.

“Whatever...it’s fine,” Dana muttered, trying to hide her jealousy and seem convinced at the same time. They picked up their food and moved to a real table. Shane left her empty cup on the counter, checked her watch, and started moving towards the door.

“Alright. Later guys,” she waved to her two friends as they shouted their goodbyes back. She turned to the girl who was previously flirting with her, walking backwards. Through the mob of busy people, Shane noted a pair of eyes fixed on her.

“Bye Lisa.”

“See ya, Shane,” the special recognition made her smile before she was forgotten once more.

Still back-peddling, the door behind Shane was pushed open by Tara and Willow, and the little bell hanging form the ceiling sounded.

“Whoa, whoa! You’re not leaving already?” Tara inquired while Shane fluently moved around her.

“Yeah, I’ve got nine o’clock, guys. See ya.”

The door closed behind her. The two girls shrugged, and with Tara in front, walked towards the table occupied by Alice and Dana.

Marina greeted the couple, handing Willow two to-go items. After taking the food and coffee, the redhead then leaned down to kiss Tara. The other girls shared a smile as they witnessed firsthand the rare, yet beautiful display of love. “I’ll meet you at the doctors,” Willow said quietly as they parted and Tara nodded. “Bye guys.” They waved to her retreating back.

“Oh my god, is it happening today?!” Alice gushed, too excited to care as Tara stole fruit from her plate.

“Is what today?” Dana jumped in, looking between the two girls, plainly confused but definitely interested.

“The insemination!” Alice rolled her eyes.

Dana processed the new information quickly, her eyes widening in curios excitement and a smile spreading across her face as it sunk in.

Tara confirmed the other blonde’s assumption before adding, “But first, Dan Foxworthy.”

“No way!” Alice looked perplexed

“Who? Why don’t I know what you’re talking about?” Dana desperately tried to keep up with the conversation.

“Because you don’t read!” Alice replied, clearly impatient for Tara’s explanation.

“Oh, and what are you, the intellectual of life?” Dana shot back, defending herself. Tara stifled a giggle.

Alice sighed, half-expecting the sarcastic remark from her friend, and decided she’d save everyone the trouble today by explaining the man’s identity. “Dan Foxworthy, is like, THE super exclusive shrink to the stars.”

Tara frowned at her, not expecting an exaggeration like that.

“He was on our list of L.A.’s best self-improvement guru’s,” Alice continued. Hearing that particular truth caused Tara to shrug. Alice looked away from Dana and to Tara, pausing a moment to spear another piece of fruit on her fork and place it in her mouth. “How did you get that appointment?”

“I just called and asked.” Upon seeing Alice’s reluctant acceptance of her answer, she added, “Don’t tell Willow I told you, ok?”

Dana shook her head, swallowing the food she had in her mouth. “But what are you guys doing? I mean, you don’t need a shrink!”

“We’re just checking in. We’re about to do this incredibly major thing.”

“But wait. You guys have the best relationship of anybody I know, gay or straight.”

“I just want to make sure we’re good,” Tara looked between her friends as if challenging them to say something else. When neither of them said anything more, she realized she had made her point.

---

The train station was exceptionally busy today, and the loudspeaker could barely be heard announcing the next departing train over the bustling of the many people. Jenny Schecter moved about nervously, pulling her rolling suitcase behind her as she looked around. Her dark brown hair was tied up in a messy pony-tail and her royal blue jacket hung loosely on her shoulders. She muttered a quiet, “Sorry,” as she accidentally bumped into a passer-by.

“Could I offer you a ride?” a male voice came from behind her.

Immediately recognizing the voice, Jenny turned to find Tim Haspel, a handsome brunette swim coach dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. With barely a hello, she reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck and jumped to kiss her fairly taller boyfriend.

“I missed you so much,” he sighed when they parted, his hands still grasping her small waist.

“I,” she paused, looking around the station, slightly embarrassed from their public display of affection, “missed you,” she finished, looking him in the eye.

“Is that all you have?” he motioned towards her two bags.

“That’s all I have,” she confirmed, surveying her belongings.

“I can’t believe you’re here...” Tim said quietly, chuckling lightly and grabbing her hand. “Come on!”

They left the train station hand-in-hand.

---

Tara sighed, crossing her legs as she sunk deeper into the large, black couch she was seated on. She looked around the office, realizing the time was passing fast.

Dan Foxworthy sat across from her in his comfortable-looking armchair, studying the blonde carefully. Through the wall-sized window behind him, the wind could be seen gently blowing through the palm trees. He tapped his fingers on the armrests of his chair. His continued stare and the deafening silence unnerved Tara a bit.

“She’s always running late,” Tara laughed nervously, hoping the excuse she supplied him with would be explanation enough. When he didn’t respond, she added, “She had a board meeting, and then she had a meeting with an artist...” she trailed off. Still no response. Clearing her throat, she began speaking once more, “Willow’s the director of the California Arts Center.” She wiped at her pants.

“I see.”

Foxworthy’s short response prompted Tara to continue, “And...she’s probably going to be really stressed about time. After this, we have to go get sperm. We’re trying to have a baby, and our friend Sean is donating...” She offered him a nervous smile.

Fortunately, Willow chose that exact moment to come rushing in through the door, holding her cell phone with an attached ear piece leading up and into her ear.

“Sorry I’m late!” she instinctively said as she shut the door, failing to notice the uncomfortable silence between her lover and the shrink. “James? Yeah, I gotta go in a minute.” She took off her sunglasses, obviously talking on her phone.

Foxworthy thought to himself, smiling despite the bad first impression he got from her.

“No no no! The artwork is way too delicate, it’s being flown in from Paris and Annie is already a complete and total nervous wreck.” She started making her way towards Tara, wildly gesticulating as she continued her conversation. “Just call Adam’s Fine Art Movers. Tell them if they want to do business with CAC again,” she paused, listening, “Exactly. Ok, great. Thanks, bye.” She hung up.

Foxworthy stood up, remembering to behave professionally, even though he really didn’t feel as if this woman deserved his respect. He extended his hand politely, but she whisked by him, unintentionally ignoring the disapproving looks she received from both her lover and the secretly appalled man in front of her as she sat down.

“Ok, here I am!” she unnecessarily announced, patting Tara’s knee lovingly and crossing her legs.

Foxworthy, remembering he was being paid for this, took his seat and began.

“Do you want to tell me what the thinking is behind trying to have a child together when you’re sexual relationship has been pretty shitty for going on three years?”

Looking to Willow for support, Tara turned back to Foxworthy, frowning. “It’s not shitty,” she protested. “It may not be perfect...”

“There’s a lot more to a relationship than sex,” Willow interrupted, shaking her head and smiling that ‘you know I’m right’ smile.

“We’ve been together for seven years,” Tara backed her lover up.

Foxworthy shrugged, “I know plenty of couples who still have sex after seven years.”

“Well, it’s not like we never have sex.”

“A lot of heterosexual couples have children when their relationships aren’t perfect.”

Willow’s phone started vibrating and she reached into her purse to retrieve it. “You know, you just obviously don’t understand what happens in a lesbian relationship,” she said, opening her phone to check the caller ID. “I knew this was a bad idea,” she continued, looking over at Tara. “You just...I don’t believe that a straight male therapist can possibly understand.”

Foxworthy smirked at them.

Inhaling sharply, he started, “Early sex is passionate. It’s exciting; still has that,” he faked a gasp, “factor, but,” he paused, smiling knowingly, “very quickly, a kind of symbiosis develops. It especially happens between two women who are doing the work of making a serious commitment to one another. And when that merging occurs, the intense mutual dependency can be a deterrent to sexual intimacy.”

“Oh my god,” Tara said, smiling as she made a connection to what Foxworthy was saying. “The...lesbian urge to merge!” she giggled, looking over at Willow to find her staring coldly at the man.

“We have to stop now.”

“Oh,” Willow simply said, standing up quickly, not bothering to mask her relief, and yet not stooping to openly display her excitement.

“Do you want to schedule another session?” Foxworthy asked, remembering the requirements of his job even though he knew the answer to that.

“Oh, we’ll let you know; I think Tara and I need to talk.”

Deciding to play dumb a little longer, he added, “But what about this insemination?”

“Uh, that’s not up for discussion,” Tara jumped in.

“Not up for discussion?” he said incredulously, suddenly slightly interested.

“No, it’s not,” Tara confirmed. “I quit my job; I was a pretty successful development executive. Now I want to relax and prepare my body for pregnancy. And that’s...what I’m doing. I’m ready to start a family.” She looked over at Willow before continuing, “We’re both ready to start a family. Right?”

“Absolutely.”

He nodded absent-mindedly, still wondering about how they managed to make it this far in their relationship.

“Ok, great!” Willow stood, collecting her purse and patting Tara’s knee again. They made their way to the door without another word, leaving a bewildered Dan Foxworthy behind.

Thanks for the feedback :cool .

MissKittys Ball O Yarn - No need to worry; as I mentioned in my notes, Candace Jewel definitely does NOT exist. I really just started using the script so the readers can get a feel for the characters, but as the story progresses, it will become less dependant on the script because there were a lot of things I would have done differently :laugh . Glad you like what you've read ^^.

KinKness - Thanks! I honestly can't believe no one did this before me, but I thought it was about time someone did. I like writing from this perspective, so I'm gonna keep going until I get bored of it :laugh .

All disclaimers apply – slight smut warning.

Chapter 1: Pilot Episode, part B

One sperm sample richer, Willow and Tara stopped by The Planet on their way back from Sean’s house.

“Marina, hurry up with those sodas!”

Tara just smiled at her lover who was standing impatiently at the counter while she sat with Alice and Dana.

“She seems excited,” Dana mused.

Alice laughed and added, “And she’s not even the one getting pregnant!”

“She didn’t particularly like Foxworthy, so I think she’s just eager to rebel.”

“That didn’t go well, huh? I thought that guy was supposed to be good!” Alice looked over at Tara.

“Well she didn’t think he understood our relationship to start with, but it was mostly because she didn’t like someone ‘professionally interfering’ with something we had planned out so carefully.”

“Nothing like a straight man; they’re all dumb,” Dana hinted, glaring at Alice as if challenging her to defend her bisexuality.

Across the café, Marina handed Willow two lidded cups with green straws, obviously filled with soda.

“You know, Dana...” Alice started, turning to face her friend, but was interrupted when Willow came over, taking Tara by the hand and helping her up.

“Come on, get in the car or we’ll be late.”

“Bye guys,” Tara waved.

“Good luck, you two!” the girls shouted back.

After they left, Alice slowly turned back to Dana, the previous conversation not forgotten. “At least I’m getting some!”

---

Willow was driving them to the doctor as they both sipped their drinks.

“I don’t want you to be stressed out, Annie!” she sipped again and listened to the girl on the other end of the phone-line.

But this is my first time and I’m really worried I’m going to mess this up!

“I...I know this is your first time curating for me, and I’m gonna give you a lot of support –”

There are so many chances for a screw up, and I don’t know what I’d do...

Willow looked over to Tara for support, even though she couldn’t actually help, and Tara looked back sympathetically. Their eyes met, and Willow smiled.

“Hey, listen,” she interrupted Annie, “This’ll lighten your load. Guess what Tara has between her legs.”

Tara blushed, closed her mouth around the straw, and sucked.

A dick?

Willow laughed, correcting her, “Close. A jar of Sean Heighny’s sperm!”

Seriously?!

“I kid you not.”

What’s it doing between her legs?

“She’s keeping it warm.”

Why?!

Willow blinked, her eyes visible through her dark purple sunglasses, before she knowledgeably replied, “Well, supposedly once it’s been ejaculated it survives longer if you keep it at body temperature.”

I see. How much do you have?

“Huh?”

How much did he ejaculate?

“Oh! Uh...hold on a second,” Willow reached between Tara’s legs and held it up in front of her face. “Uh...it’s only about half an inch, but they say it’s quality, not quantity.”

Tara reached over, grabbing the jar, and placed it back between her thighs as Willow pulled into a parking space in front of the doctor’s building.

“Annie? I need to go, but I’ll give you a call back a little later on,” she said and hung up. Turning to Tara, she asked, “Baby, are you ready?”

“Let’s do this,” Tara smiled, opening her car door.

---

Inside Dr. Wilson’s office, Tara sat on her back with her legs spread wide, a white sheet covering her thighs.

“Alright,” Dr. Wilson said, standing up from between Tara’s legs, holding the sample. “I’m gonna take a look at this, and while I’m gone...” she paused, grinning slightly as she faced Willow who was also smiling, and continued cautiously, “Well, remember how I told you that there’s a fair amount of evidence now that it’s more likely to take if you’re...” she took a breath, “Aroused.”

Willow’s smile faltered, and Dr. Wilson winked at her. She watched the doctor close the door and scoffed.

“She’s not serious?” she looked down at Tara who said nothing. “What, am I supposed to fuck you right here?”

“I think it would help,” came Tara’s quiet voice as she squeezed her lover’s hand.

Willow gave in and sighed, letting go of Tara’s hand and walking around her. The redhead sat down on the stool between the blonde’s legs, momentarily looking deeply into blue eyes before disappearing underneath the sheet. Tara willed herself to relax as Willow placed her hands on the outside of blonde’s thighs. Willow then gently parted Tara’s nether lips and took a long lick from bottom to top, purposely avoiding her girl’s clit. She lapped at the flowing juices a moment longer before pulling away. Tara’s frustrated sigh could be heard as Willow resurfaced and laughed nervously.

“This is just...this is...this is too weird for me! I mean, I...I just...you know, I really...” she stopped, composing her babble before continuing, “Frankly, I find it incredibly inappropriate that she even suggested it. You know, I mean, I bet she would NEVER do that with a straight couple!”

Tara said nothing. Instead, she motioned with a nod of her head for her lover to continue her previous actions. Not long after Willow had moved back under the sheet, a knock on the door sounded. Tara’s face scrunched in further frustration as Willow quickly resurfaced, wiping the juices off her chin.

“Come in,” she said.

“Could you come here a minute please?” the doctor’s head poked through the door.

Willow didn’t like Dr. Wilson’s tone. Willow looked to her lover for approval and kissed the blonde’s knee as she stood up and followed the doctor out of the room.

---

The doctor led Willow to a computer.

“You may want to take a look at this.”

Willow bent over, studying the monitor for a minute, confusion etched across her face.

“Shouldn’t they be moving more?” she inquired, obviously referring to the motionless sperm shown on the screen.

“Yes. That’s what I wanted to show you,” the disappointment was evident in the doctor’s voice. “I am so sorry to tell you that that stuff wouldn’t get anyone pregnant! Those little fellows just don’t have what it takes.”

---

Jenny stood in line, waiting to check out at the local grocery store.

“Hello!” she greeted the cashier cheerfully. Looking down, she noticed the pin he wore over his store apron. “What kind of, um, positions do you have available? ‘Cause, I might be looking for a job...”

“Cashier,” he smiled at her as he rang her items up.

“Really? Excellent. Um, could I have an application?”

“Yep.”

---

Tara walked into The Planet, her eyes slightly downcast. Alice stood up and ran over to her.

“Ah...Your Ladyship! Please, don’t char anything!”

“It’s not like it’s going to dislodge if she sits down to hard, Alice.”

“There’s nothing to dislodge,” Tara said sadly, looking at Dana, “Sean’s sperm is lackluster.”

Alice gasped.

“He’s low motility; NO motility, actually.”

“Oh. My. God. You would never know it by the way he fucks,” Alice replied, shaking her head.

Dana sighed loudly, “Christ, Alice! When are you gonna make up your mind between dick and pussy? And spare us the gory bisexual details, please.”

“Well, for your information, Dana,” Alice stressed her friend’s name matter-of-factly, “I’m looking for the same qualities in a man as I am in a woman.”

“Big tits,” Dana joked, grabbing the air in front of her breasts as if she had bigger than an A-cup. Nobody laughed but her.

“Anyway,” Tara started up again, not wanting a disagreement to break out as she witnessed Alice throw the brunette a dirty look, “It explains why I haven’t gotten pregnant in six months.”

“Oh, sorry T, he was the perfect donor,” Alice refocused on the other blonde.

“He was the one Willow wanted...” she sighed, but then brightened, “But my egg just implanted, so I can still conceive any time over the next two or three days. So you’ve gotta help me find another donor.”

“Hold on now. What’s the matter?” Marina came up from behind them, carrying her own coffee, and sat down.

“Sean’s jism was no good.”

“Aw, we’ll find you someone else,” Marina said comfortingly, rubbing Tara’s shoulder.

“Who? I’ve got two days.”

“Well, between the four of us,” she motioned to the girls sitting around the circular table with her, “We’ll come up with someone. What, he has to be healthy, strong, creative, handsome...”

“Artistic,” Tara cut in.

“There’s always Shane,” Dana said flatly as the mentioned girl approached the table.

“Guys!” she said warmly.

“Hey!” Alice was the only one who replied.

“You know, do you have to dress like that all the time?” Dana obviously disapproved of Shane’s fashion style. She ignored the warning look Tara threw her.

“Like what?” Shane flipped some hair out of her eyes and looked down at her clothes.

“Well, I wouldn’t be seen on the street with you,” Dana responded looking up and down Shane’s body.

“Yeah?”

“I mean, every single thing about the way you’re dressed, like, screams dyke.”

“God, Dana!” Alice frowned at her friend.

“Sorry, man.” Shane didn’t sound like she really meant it as she chewed on a black straw.

“Well, look, if I’m outted, I’m screwed, Alice, alright? Sponsors aren’t exactly clamoring to have their staff represented by big ‘ol lezzie tennis players.”

Alice made a point to sigh elaborately through Dana’s lousy, yet understandable, explanation.

“No, no, no, look it’s cool. I totally dig that you need to make a living. I’m meeting a client anyway,” Shane picked up her phone and left.

Alice turned to look at Dana, “You know, you are gonna pickle in that self-loathing homophobia, I swear.”

“Oh yeah? Well you’re gonna shrivel in that self-righteous priggishness.”

They continued glaring at each other.

“You guys...” Tara looked between them, and they broke off their staring contest to think.

“Alright, who would squirt into a jar for you?” Alice folded her hands and looked down at them.

“Hello!” Dana, looking out the window with a smirk on her face, caused the rest of the girl’s to follow her gaze. Outside, they saw Jenny walk by; of course, none of them knew who she was just yet.

Marina just stared at her as she walked by. .

“What?!” Dana’s loud remark brought her back to reality.

“You are just SO gay!” Alice shook her head.

“So gay,” Tara added, smiling a bit.

Dana sighed, “I know. I know...”

---

Tim blew his whistle, signaling for the girls he coached to get out of the pool.

“Trish,” Tim’s best friend and co-swim coach, Randy Jackson, said from beside him, “you’re backstroke is looking much better,” he complimented the girl who walked up to them.

“Oh thanks,” Trish grinned, adjusting her towel around her waist.

“Looking good for USC,” he added, and then looking towards Tim, he continued, “Do you guys have some extra stroke training scheduled?”

“Uh, yeah, tomorrow,” Tim looked up from the clipboard he was marking notes on, “After physics, right?” he looked over at Trish.

“Yeah. Hey, do you think that you could maybe come with me in the morning to talk to Derse about repeating my mid-term?”

“Uh, I can’t really do it in the morning. My girlfriend, Jenny, is in town and she wants me to take her car shopping.”

Trish’s face fell. She was quiet for a minute while she took in the disappointing information. “Oh, she’s moving here?”

“Yep,” he replied proudly, “She’s in it for the long haul.”

Not knowing what else to say, Trish looked down at the floor, and an “Oh,” could be heard as she walked off.

“Trish,” Tim called after her, “Maybe after practice you and I can go talk to Derse together.”

“Ok,” she shrugged and continued walking toward the locker rooms.

Tim turned around and gave Randy a ‘help me!’ look. Laughing, the taller man put his arm around Tim’s shoulders and said, “Now you know you just broke that girl’s heart, right?”

“Sorry man...what was I supposed to say?”

They walked off together in the opposite direction.
