As time ticked by, everyone in Willow's hospital room was starting to get anxious. Ruth was supposed to come by sometime that day and each person looked at the clock every few seconds. The room was silent and the clock's tick-tock was doing nothing to soothe their frazzled nerves.

Dawn looked at Tara and saw that the blonde witch looked positively panicked. Tara was sitting on the bed next to Willow with the redhead caressing the back of her lover's hand. But Tara looked like she was on the verge of tears. She kept looking at the clock as if it held all the answers. And Willow looked at her, her face showing her concern. Finally, Dawn couldn't take it anymore and went to Tara's side.

"Hey. Can I talk to you for a sec? Outside?" Dawn whispered.

Tara smiled slightly. She could never say no to the young woman who she considered a sister or maybe even a daughter. She nodded and got up, telling her lover that she would be right back.

Once outside, she took a seat and motioned for Dawn to sit near her. The teenager didn't comply.

"Tara, look, I know this is eating you inside, but you have to be strong." Dawn said bluntly.

Tara blinked slowly and stared at Dawn.

"You have to be strong, because it's not good for Willow to see you this way. You can't break down, at least not in front of Willow." Dawn continued. "I mean, Ruth isn't here yet, and you look as if there is no more hope. You told me once that there is always hope." Dawn finished before sitting down and putting her hand on Tara's shoulder.

The instant they touched, Tara felt a spark of energy. Dawn jerked her hand away and looked at it, amazed. Tara looked at her, equally bewildered. For an instant, Dawn thought that it was just a bit of static electricity, but then, it was as if she was drawn to do it again. She put her hand on Tara's shoulder and tried sending her all the positive thoughts she could think of.

Nothing happened.

Dawn thought about it for a second before she smiled and then, she tried to unlock Tara's positive feelings and that's when time seemed to stop. Tara saw in her mind all the dangers they had faced and how they had always won. But the thing she felt the most was the feeling of hope surging into her. Not a false hope, or a hope put there by someone, but the hope that was buried in herself, the hope that she thought had left her. The strength she thought she had run out of.

Dawn broke off the contact, looking at her hand amazedly.

Tara looked up at Dawn and smiled, a real smile, not the fake ones she had tried before.

"Okay, that was really weird, and we'll have to see Giles about this, but thanks Dawnie." Tara said as she hugged the teenager before they both made their way back to the room.

Tara smiled brightly at her lover and took her seat. Willow smiled back, glad to see a real smile on her lover's face. She had felt concerned about her lover's brooding for it wasn't in the blonde witches' habits. Willow felt a great weight lift from her shoulders. Willow put her hand over the back of Tara's and then laced their fingers together and felt it, felt the strength, felt the hope surge through their connection.

"Wow baby, you're strong." Willow blurted out softly.

"Strong like an Amazon." Tara replied lovingly.

"Stronger." Willow said softly, raising their hands and placing a kiss on Tara's palm.

"You're both very strong."

The group turned towards the voice and found Giles in the doorway with a woman.

"This is Ruth." Giles explained. He turned to the woman. "These are Buffy, her sister Dawn, Xander, Anya and on the bed are..."

"Willow and Tara. I've heard much about you." she said, smiling and shaking their hands warmly.

"Good things I hope." Willow said nervously, looking at the woman's ice-blue eyes.

"Well, let's say there are divided opinions about the two of you. The whole coven knows of the bravoury the White witch has shown when she refused to tell Glory about the key." she said, pointing to Tara, who blushed and ducked her head. "And we have heard of the wrath the Black witch has shown when battling Glorificus and how she has made the Hell God scream in pain." she finished, turning towards Willow, who looked down at her lap.

"We're kn-known as the Black witch and the White witch?" Tara said, amazed that the coven knew about them and that they had titles.

Ruth smiled, her blue eyes warming. "Yes, you are. Now, let's focus on the matter at hand before we have a little chit-chat later, shall we?"

The group nodded. Ruth stepped closer to the bed and looked at Willow, flicking her long black hair back. She drew out a clear crystal and put one of her hands over Willow's head. Tara let go of Willow's hand and backed away. Willow closed her eyes as she felt the probing of Ruth's magic into her being. Ruth closed her eyes, to open them a few seconds later.

"Oh." she said, drawing her hand back, a frown on her face.

"What?" Willow asked, her eyes opening.

"Can the rest of you leave me alone with Willow and Tara? I need to ask them some questions." Ruth asked, her eyebrows furrowing in thought.

The rest of the gang left the room and Ruth turned to Willow.

"When was the last time you cast Willow?" she asked with infinite compassion.

"Well, it was about the beginning of December, so about 3 months ago." Willow replied, counting on her fingers.

"And during these three months, you didn't cast anything? You didn't do any meditation or spell in light magic?"

"Nothing. I was tempted, but no."

"So, basically, you just went cold turkey?"

Willow nodded. Ruth frowned before looking back at Tara.

"And during these times, you two never performed any magics together?"

"Well, no. I... um... I l-l-left?" Tara replied, cursing herself inwardly for sounding like the scared girl Willow had met all those years ago.

"Oh, so the two of you broke up?" Ruth continued her interrogation.

"Yeah, we d-did, but we're back together now." Tara replied, looking at Willow and smiling.

"Good, good." Ruth said. "I just need to check something out with the Coven, do a little bit of research."

"So, what's causing Willow's illness is m-magical?" Tara said hopefully.

"Yes, of course it is, and now we need to see what we need to do to make things right again." Ruth said, noticing the relieved way the couple was looking at each other.

She chuckled and left the couple alone for a few minutes to tell the rest of the Gang about the news. Tara went back to Willow's side and took her hand, leaning over her to kiss her.

"Told you everything would be okay." Willow said, smiling.

Tara nodded and kissed Willow again. She was about to pull away when Willow's hand crept into her hair and pulled her back into her, kissing her deeper, longer. They tilted their heads and their tongues danced against each other. A loud cough made them draw apart.

"Randy little pair, aren’t you?" Ruth asked, smiling. Tara blushed and Ruth chuckled.

"Nothing to be embarrassed about, I was just teasing you. Now, I told the others about what I think, so I think I'm going to borrow some books from Giles and research it before I call the Coven tomorrow. For now, Willow, rest." Ruth said before leaving the room, winking at Tara.

*****

"Giles, you old fool!" Ruth stated as they got in his car. "How could you just make her stop practicing? I thought you knew better."

"Ruth, believe me, but I knew almost nothing about it. So, what do you think?" he asked.

"I have always said that dark magic has a consequence, and for Willow, it's physical from what I could see. I will tell you more about it after I contact the Coven." Ruth replied.

"But do you think you can do something to help her? Ruth, I love her like a daughter." Giles said, his dark gray eyes boring into hers.

"Of course you do. Who could not love that dear child? Her heart is full of affection and love." He nodded and she continued. "I don't know what we can do yet, as I said I need to contact the Coven and to research for a few things. I really hope I can find something, but I must warn you, I may be too late." Ruth said truthfully.

Giles nodded, his jaw tightening as he ground his molars together. He nodded stiffly.

"Would you like me to show you the Magic Box and let you start on the research?" Giles asked after a minute.

"Actually I would like to rest for a while. Jet lag." she explained as she yawned.

"Certainly. I'll take you to the hotel."

"I just need a couple of hours to rejuvenate my self as well as my magics. I feel the dark magics of the Hellmouth and I need to cleanse myself."

"Surely. Should I pick you up tomorrow?" Giles asked as he parked in front of Sunnydale's Holiday Inn.

She looked at her watch, it was eight and a half in the evening. "In Devon, it's now seven thirty in the morning. How about you pick me up tomorrow morning at eight or so?"

"Yes of course, I shall be here."

"Goodnight Giles."

"Goodnight." he replied as she got out of the car.

Hi Washi :wave

It's great to see you and "Dark core" back :bounce

Great update as always :applause

So apparently Willow was suffering from an overload of dark magic in her system even before she got that blast from Jonathan... hmm :hmm That's not good :sob

And Dawn can use her "keyness" to unlock trapped feelings inside people? Maybe she can help with Willow's dark magic overload :bounce

Or then again maybe I'm reading too much into this :blush

I hope everything turns out all right :pray

I wish you a merry Christmas :flower

Dawn unleashing Tara's buried hope was inspired. No one knows the extent of Dawn's Key powers in this dimension. Of course these may not even be Key-powers, but something else entirely and that intrigues me all the more.

Ruth couldn't have arrived at a better time. The diagnosis has finally been made - magical in nature, and possibly treatable. More hope to those who had so little.

Great work Washi. Don't worry, RL is a pain for all of us. Just keep the updates coming!

Good chap Washi. I was intrigued by the interaction between Dawn and Tara - whether it's key-like or more Wiccan in nature. Also like the voice that comes out of Ruth's mouth - sounds like a pain-in-the-ass (like me!).

The interaction between W and T in this chapter seems tight - not overly mopey or fluffy - just the right balance of strain, love, and humor.

Also liked the Black Witch/White Witch thing...an interesting, but not wrong commentary - also reminds the reader that light and dark are not fixed quotients, but are complex characters. Looking forward to more.

I'm really really sorry for not leaving feedback before, but I'm trying to make up for this error right now. :) I just want to say that this is an awesome story, just like all your other fics, and that I really love how you're dealing with all the painful season 6 issues. I always do a happy dance when I see that you've updated. :D I can't wait to read more!

Excellent, let's just hope Ruth can find out what needs to be done before Willow gets worse.

Interesting twist on the Dawn/Tara connection. They always were close, look forward to seeing where you're going with this one.

Ruth isn't telling about her guess for the cause of Willow's troubles now is she ? I liked her matter of fact style when she said 'yes, of course it is' ;-)

Don't really follow how Ruth can say she might be too late already and thus need all the time she can get, while going to sleep of a jetlag after that comment. Bit strange that, surely she can contact the Coven before that... at least have them do some research while she sleeps. Ah well, at least she seems confident to know what is causing Willow's problems... lets see if she's right.

The Tara/Dawn moment was strange, I always assumed that Glory's attempt drained whatever key-ness there was out of Dawn. Certainly I've never seen her use or 'being' the key after that (spelled 'plot-device' , heh). Good that she lifted Tara's spirit, Willow needs the non-brooding kind of support at the moment.

So Willow and Tara are known as the Black & White witches, interesting. Not to sure if those colors mean all that much though, you only have to switch who goes to the fare and the outcome would be exactly the other way around. (can't see Tara being exactly friendly if Glory had attacked Willow:) ).

Hmm... the info the coven has on Willow and Tara seems to be oddly sketchy and specific at times. Not to many people know Tara resisted Glory, it's not something that would draw much attention. Yet Ruth doesn't know Willow has stopped doing spells for over three months now ? Strange.

Ah well, merry christmas and thanks for this hopefull update :wave

Washi

Wonderful new update. I can't tell you enough how much I look forward to, and enjoy reading this fic. The way you so easily can change the moods and sceens in a way that keeps the flow and harmony is amazing. The part with Dawn and Tara was great. Dawnie still having residual grief for not telling and then to make the conscious choice to help Willow even if that means telling Tara to suck it up, and to be strong for Willow. Ok you got me with the whole sending the hope via magic or Key energy or by love however the kid did it I so didn't see that coming .NICE TWIST THERE.

Ok Ruth I love her lol.

:wave Hey Washi, Happy New Year!!! :party

I love all your updates so let's get that out of the way...

Wow, check out the grown up Dawn! That's cool cuz I hate it when she's all whiney and stuff.

Whew! It's good to know that there definitely is hope seeing as Willow's illness is magical. So, the coven refers to Willow as the Black Witch and Tara as the White Witch...Hmmm, is there some prophecy about to be revealed? We kittens know :willow and :tara are destined to be together, but is there some other shared destiny for the both of them too? :eyebrow

Need more and soon please :pray

*****

Giles woke up to the loud beeping of his alarm clock. He rubbed his eyes and stared blankly at the ceiling of his room before turning his head to look at the old alarm clock by his bed.

“Bloody Hell!” he exclaimed when he saw the time: 7:35 am.

He rubbed his sweaty face with both hands, Ruth’s words haunting him as they had haunted him all night, seeping into his dreams.

Giles, you old fool!

I must warn you, I may be too late.

He had had nightmares all night, visions of Willow in her coffin, of the young people he considered his family grieving. He thought of his last dream, the one that had shaken him the most.

He woke up and looked at the ceiling, his dark eyes full of shadows. His eyes burned as he thought again of what he was going to do later that same day.

It was Willow’s funeral.

He looked at the white walls of his room and then glanced up at the modern-looking black grandfather clock that was sitting in front of him, its color contrasting sharply with the room’s color. The black needles of the clock moved, the pendulum moving back and forth, the rhythm never failing, the tick and tock never stopping, its sound echoing through the silent room, like a beating heart, or the way a heart is supposed to sound. But Willow’s heart was now silent, the rhythm had stopped, and today, he and the rest of his family were going to tell her one final goodbye.

Tears soaked his eyes and lashes before slowly moving down his cheeks, and cooling his ears. He chocked back a sob, his emotions running wild, making his heart beat wildly, and he wondered, for the thousand time how his heart could still beat after what had happened, after loosing someone so close to him, again. He had lost Jenny, and Joyce and even Buffy, but still, Willow’s death shook him like no other. He didn’t know why, but it did. Joyce and Jenny had been lovers, in a way, but Buffy and Willow were his daughters. When Buffy died, it was as if he knew that it wasn’t a permanent state. But Willow’s death was permanent, he knew it.

He remembered the way she had died, and he ground his jaw tightly to try to keep the pain locked inside him, but he failed. Memories of that day came back to life in front of his eyes, and like a worn movie he had seen thousands of time, he saw the events pass in front of his eyes clearly.

The phone call he had received, his mad dash towards the hospital, his entrance. He knew the screenplay by heart, he knew what was going to happen, yet, every time he remembered, he wished that this movie would be different, that it would end happily. And yet, it never did.

He saw Willow’s pained eyes, and Tara’s tear-streaked face, and he knew. He knew it in his bones, he knew it as well as he knows his name. ‘Willow’s going to die’ he thought to himself, and he knew it was true. Everyone was in the hospital room with Willow, everyone except Xander. For some reason he couldn’t come or they couldn’t reach him or something of the kind. He had asked, and yet the answers had been vague, and he only knew that Anya had left Xander a message on his answering machine.

He saw it again, the way he had seen it dozens of times before, the way Willow’s breathing had become shallow, the way her eyes had darted everywhere as she had panicked. And the grip Tara had on her hand never loosened, just tightened, as if she was gripping Willow with all her might, clutching for her to remain with her, to not go, to never leave. And Willow blinked and whispered a single “I love you” before letting go, her body slackening.

And Tara yelled and screamed and beseeched and shook Willow’s body with all her might before the room was full of doctors and nurses, all pushing her back, all working to bring her lover back, but not achieving the miracle. And Giles had held Tara and pulled her away, and she had resisted, and tried to fight her way back to her lover’s side like a woman possessed, almost getting there.

And the doctors had looked at each other and shook their heads, it was over, it was done, Willow was dead. And Tara continued trying to release herself, until she witnessed with wide eyes the white sheet moving to cover her lover’s face, and her hitting became desperate, and she thumped Giles a few times on the chest before she collapsed.

And he held her, telling her that everything would be alright, and knowing he was lying. Everyone knew.

He held her and stroked her hair tenderly as she cried and cried and cried. And the movie always ended the same way, with Xander arriving and finding his best friend dead, that he was too late, collapsing on his knees in front of her bed and crying and crying and crying.

Giles got up from his bed, showered and dressed in his black clothes, clothes of grief and pain. He looked at himself in the mirror, his eyes dark and pained, his face pale, the walls white, his black suit in stark contrast with the walls. Everything was so bright, and his face was barely being reflected except for his dark hair and eyes. He looked into the mirror for long seconds before going out.

The whole group was at the cemetery, their tears never leaving them, and they stayed solemn as the person doing the service spoke, his voice never really breaking through their haze. They were silent and still, their faces streaked with the muted tears they were shedding. Tara’s eyes were fixated on the coffin, as if she expected it to open and her lover to come back to her, healthy and alive. Giles watched her closely. She looked as if she wasn’t realizing what was happening, as if she was in a dream, her eyes were hazy. And when they started lowering the coffin, her eyes turned wild and she threw herself down on the edge of the hole, trying to frantically pull the coffin up.

“No! Give her back to me! Give her back! Willow!” she cried harshly, clawing at the coffin, her fingernails leaving soft marks on the shiny wood. A crying Buffy and a desperate Xander pulled her back, held her while she struggled, crying and yelling.

“No! Please God! Give her back to me. Willow, come back! Don’t leave me, please, don’t leave me!” she chocked out before her tears made it impossible for her to speak, and she started whimpering. He looked at the desolate group and the dream faded before another segment started.

He knocked yet again on the door of the Summers home. Still not getting any reply, he sat down on the steps, pondering where everyone went. It was about eight o’clock in the morning, and it was a school day. Normally, the Summers home would be awake by then, but after all, a lot of things had happened lately. Willow’s funeral had only been one week before and the whole group was deep in grief.

Giles sat down on the porch, deciding he’d wait for someone to either leave or come back. He sat there for a while before he saw a bloodied and bruised Buffy walking towards the house. He went to her side, walking quickly.

“Buffy, are you alright?”

“Hey Giles, yeah, just a bit bloodied and bruised.” She answered, walking to the door and unlocking it. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

He pondered for a minute at her blunt question. “Well, forgive me for wanting to check up on you all.”

“Oh, Giles, no, I didn’t mean it like that. I meant why were you on the porch?” Buffy quickly explained.

“Well, like I’ve said, I came to check up on you, but after knocking repeatedly on the door in vain, I thought it’s be wise for me to wait for someone there.”

“You knocked?” Buffy asked, her tone getting angry. At Giles’ nod, she ascended the stairs running, Giles behind her trying to keep up to her Slayer speed.

She opened the door to Dawn’s room and found the girl in her bed, on her back, her eyes open and fixed on a spot on the ceiling.

“Dawn.” Buffy called.

The girl didn’t move, didn’t flinch.

“Dawn.” Buffy tried again, and yet no response was given by Dawn.

“Buffy, don’t tell me that she’s been like this ever since…” Giles trailed off, knowing that he didn’t need to formulate his thought as the major event that had burned in their minds was Willow’s funeral.

Buffy sighed. “Pretty much. I mean, usually, she’ll get up and have breakfast, but she hasn’t been talkative.” She looked at her sister. “Dawnie.” Buffy whispered.

The girl on the bed turned her head. Her eyes suddenly sparked with unshed tears. “Giles!” she said, leaping towards the man who engulfed her in a warm hug.

“Dawn.” he whispered, holding the girl close as she shook with pain. He petted her long hair with infinite love, the love of a father. She continued crying for a while before she reluctantly pulled back.

“Dawn, how about we go downstairs and have some breakfast?” Buffy asked with infinite affection.

Dawn nodded and went to the bathroom.

“Buffy, how is Tara?” Giles asked, his face showing his concern.

“Tara’s… well, we should get her up too so she can take her medication.” Buffy said, leading the way to her bedroom.

The door opened under a firm push of the Slayer’s hand to show the blonde woman sleeping in a fetal position, holding a pillow to her body, as if it were a warm body. Buffy and Giles approached the bed and Giles saw that the girl was crying in her sleep. Buffy sat down near the girl and ran her fingers in the dark blonde mane.

“Tara, sweetie, it’s Buffy. Wake up now, it’s time for breakfast.” Buffy said, her voice low.

Tara opened her eyes immediately. She wiped her eyes on the back of her hand and looked around. Her gaze came to rest on Giles. She whispered a quiet “hello” and left to get ready, her feet shuffling along.

Giles looked at her, obviously displeased by the lack of response he got from the girl.

“She…” he trailed off, not knowing what to say except for the obvious.

“Yeah, she’s a shell of herself Giles.” Buffy said, wiping a stray tear from the corner of her eye.

“And you Buffy, how are you coping?” Giles said, resting his hands on her shoulders.

“I take my pain in the Slaying.” Buffy said looking at her feet.

“Buffy, are you sure you don’t have anything else to tell me?” Giles asked her, his voice steely.

“I’ve been killing vampires like Faith used to and I’ve been having sex with Spike. ” she whispered, her head still bent.

Giles closed his eyes and drew the girl into his arms. She cried for a few minutes before the phone rang. Buffy left his embrace to pick up the phone.

“Hello.” she said, wiping her tears on the back of her hand.

“Buffy, it’s Anya.” Came the reply. Anya’s voice had taken a sad tone they had never heard before.

“Anya, is everything okay? How’s Xander?”

“Xander… he had a nightmare and he won’t get up to go to work. I’ve called you, maybe you could do something, maybe talk to him.” Anya replied in a monotonous voice.

“I’ll be right there in a while.” Buffy said, hanging up.

Giles went downstairs to the kitchen and looked at the two other girls. Tara suddenly snapped her attention to him.

“Giles you old fool! You were too late!”

Giles shook his head to clear his mind. In his dream, his whole family fell apart. He wouldn’t let that happen, never. He went to the bathroom and showered, the water shaking away some of his visions. He got ready with a new sense of purpose and left to pick Ruth up so that they could start on the research. He just hoped that they weren’t too late.

Hi Washi, good to see you back with an update.

Well, you warned us. Very sad, but a relief that the sadness is only from Giles' tortured dreams. You've done a good job here of getting inside Giles' head, of showing his feelings toward his family, and the helplessness a parent feels when everything falls apart and you can't make it alright.

You portray the dream state well, with the stark black and white colours, the sense of knowing what will happen yet being unable to change it. Xander's inexplicable absence until too late also helps set the dreamlike mood.

"Act 3" of the dream is a believable picture of how the members of the group would react. Xander and Dawn withdrawing from the world; Tara a shattered "shell of herself," Anya depressed (probably more because of Xander than Willow), and Buffy taking out her grief in sex and violence. When Tara suddenly snaps out Ruth's accusing words, it brings Giles from the dream to the waking world.

While hard for Giles, the dream has the positive effect of strengthening his determination to prevent it's coming true. Now, on with the healing!

OMG!! :shock

You weren't kidding with the warning about angst!

Interesting that giles is the one to have the dream about Willow dying, then we find out Xander had a dream!

Glad to see this story back.

Hello Kittens-

Ow. The ultimate parent's (of any kind) nightmare, played out in horrific detail. The end where Tara accuses him with the words:

"Giles you old fool! You were too late!”

echoing his own helplessness and his self incrimination. Perhaps this last image of Tara is less the shattered girl and more Giles pummeling himself for his failure.

Like I said, Ow. And wonderfully Ow at that.
