Chapter Eight – Another Nervous Wait!
Once again Willow is pacing forward and back, only this time it’s not at home; she’s inside a hospital waiting room.
Good God! What is she doing in there? She certainly takes her time. Well I’ll be patient I just don’t want to be late for anything. Thinks Willow.
Willow is so wrapped up in her thoughts that she doesn’t even notice Tara walk in from the toilet. A sudden tapping on her shoulder jolts her back into reality.
“Whoa! Sorry, zoned out there for a minute,” chuckles Willow nervously as if she’s high on caffeine.
“What’s wrong? You’re pacing like a Looney and you’re high on mochas!” asks Tara holding onto Willow’s shoulders to stop her moving.
“Eh, well I’m just jumpy this morning and I don’t know why, just am,” says Willow shrugging off Tara’s hands.
“You sure you wanna still come in with me?”
“Of course! There’s no question about it! I’m coming in. I wanna see our baby for the time, don’t I?” replies Willow in a determined and raised voice.
“Okay, okay, calm down. I was only asking!” sighs Tara to tried to say anything else.
Just then the door opens and a cubby looking nurse steps into the waiting room.
“Uh Mrs Rosenberg-Maclay please?” she announces in a high-pitched voice.
“Here!” utters Tara raising her hand slightly, like she is still at school.
“Oh, come on through dear,” the woman smiles kindly at Tara, obviously seeing how tired she is.
Both Tara and Willow walk past the nurse, but Willow gets stopped.
“Uh sorry mam, but I asked for Mrs Rosenberg-Maclay, and well she’s here,” she says pointing to Tara, “and so why are you coming?”
Willow looked red in the face from anger. Tara can see this and quickly interferes before Willow can say anything.
“Don’t worry, she’s fine to come,” smiles Tara weakly.
“Oh, but with all due respect we only let family members in, and well she doesn’t seem to look at all like you my dear,” says the woman slightly confused.
“No, really it’s okay, she’s very much family,”
“Oh okay, if you’re sure,”
“She’s my wife! And that’s my child! God don’t you read the papers or watch the television or something?” hisses Willow at the shocked nurse.
“Well, uh no not really. Uh come on inside then,” she says nervously as she walks in front of the pair to avoid any eye contact with Willow.
“God! Someone who doesn’t know who we are! What a bleeding miracle!” whispers Willow into Tara’s ear.
“Behave yourself! Or I’ll have to punish you later!” replies Tara also in a hushed voice.
“I’ll be waiting!” grins Willow.
Once inside the room the nurse who is now known as Marcy, asks Tara to get onto the table so she can examine her. Willow watches from the bottom of the table so not to get in the way.
“This will feel a little strange but don’t worry, I just have to feel around a little bit okay?” she says kindly.
“Okay, go ahead,”
Gently Marcy presses onto Tara small bump. Willow sees Tara’s face cringe a little at first but after a few seconds she seems fine again.
“Can I just ask, how far along are you now?”
“Oh about 4 months,”
“Right good, well that all seems fine. So do you wanna see the baby?” she asks grinning, as if she just loves this part.
“Oh yes please!” both Willow and Tara reply at the same time.
“Okay then, this is cold,” she reminds Tara as she puts a little jelly onto Tara’s belly.
Willow’s still standing at the end of the table. This is too far away for Tara, and she wants Willow to be able to see too, so she calls Willow over.
“Come closer Will. It’s okay, I won’t bite!” giggles Tara reaching out her hand.
“I won’t get in the way?” she asks.
“Oh no, it’s fine,” replies Marcy.
Minutes later the scanner picks up an image. Neither Tara nor Willow can really believe it, but there in front of them on the screen is a picture of their baby, healthy and oh god so tiny!
“Wow. I can’t believe that’s it’s inside you. It’s so beautiful!” gasps Willow taking hold of Tara’s hand and squeezing it tenderly.
“I can’t believe it either!” sobs Tara, with tears of joy.
“Oh baby, don’t cry!” says Willow wrapping her arms around Tara’s neck.
“I can give you some photos, if you’d like. To keep and to give to the father!” Marcy smiles happily.
“Right! Yes that would be great,” replies Tara trying to ignore the last part, about the father, as obviously the nurse wouldn’t understand how two women can have a baby without a man.
Tara covers herself up and climbs off the table. Marcy hands over a couple of photos for the two, and wishes them well.
“Do you know that comment about the father annoyed me!” says Willow.
“Why? She doesn’t know we’re witches, and no, we’re not telling her!” says Tara rolling her eyes.
The pair are just walking to their car and stepping inside.
“I know silly. Well I suppose it doesn’t matter. I mean I’m technically the dad so I still get a photo anyway right?” smiles Willow proudly.
“Course you’ll get picture. They’ll be all over the house if we don’t watch it!”
The pair drives out of the car park when suddenly Willow turns to face Tara.
“Do you know, that nurse really annoyed me?”
All Tara can do is laugh at her adorable wife and smile with pride and joy, as they have now finally seen their baby for the first time.
