Willow found herself laughing extra loudly as she watched Tara begin to approach their lunch table in the packed cafeteria, full of loud talking and what not. She felt her heart skip a beat the girl edged herself closer to the table, dodging a group of wild sophomore boys. The redhead turned to Buffy and began babbling about pointless subjects, trying to act as though she wasn't staring as the blonde managed to make it to the table in one piece, and find a seat across from Willow.
She couldn't truly remember the first time she began feeling for Tara in a different way than all of her other girl friends, but she did remember when she had realized what it was she had been feeling. Back in 8th grade, when it seemed as though she had forever, and the world revolved around her.
The Eighth Grade Formal was coming up, and she had finally managed to snag a last minute date, but Tara, whom she had just become friends with earlier that year, had not.
That night was full of many misfortunes, one of them being the last song of the night; a slow song. They had all managed to couple up with their partners, feeling safe in the arms of their dates.
Willow, who had gone with Xander, grabbed a spot near the back of the gym, and began to slowly step, when she noticed a familiar figure out of the corner of her eye. Tara! She watched in utter amazement as Tara got up and started to dance with a guy slightly shorter than herself. Amazement began to turn into jealousy as Tara seemed to be enjoying herself with... Jonathan? Out of all the people in the world, Tara was dancing with Jonathan? The song slowly faded out, and Willow had quickly let go of Xander, who had leaned down to try and kiss her, but only managed to snag her cheek before she escaped. Willow could still remember running all the way home and just sitting on her bed thinking about the dance.
High School began, and suddenly Willow and Tara's friendship had been put on hold, due to the fact that they had both discovered new friends, and had only one class together. Thus began the suffering.
Willow would spend countless nights wondering what Tara was doing, or where she was at that moment. In a way, though, it was good that they had separated, giving her a chance to sort out everything she was feeling at the time. But as she reached junior year, she finally understood how she truly felt, and knew that she needed Tara back in her life. She began joining every club and activity that Tara participated in, and scheduled around her as well. Before senior year, it was as though they were best friends again, which led Willow back to the present...
" Willow? Willow? Anyone home?", Tara questioned, lightly tapping Willows hand with her finger.
"What? Oh, yea, I just sort of spaced off..." Willow mumbled, trying hard not to blush or make eye contact. Tara had this distinct way of causing her to do that.
Tara gave a small laugh, the left side of her smile rising higher than the right. " I figured that much, you seem to do that quite alot." She smiled once more, before standing up to empty her tray on the far side of the cafeteria, and then head for class.
Willow finally glanced up, watching her walk away, full of longing towards her. It always seemed as though Tara were constantly on her mind, and as she watched her fade away through the large double doors , she realized that she was.
