Ani Difranco:

Gotta give some Ani love

I'm someone that rarely purchases CD's unless it's choral work..but I have all of her albums.

What's really cool about her stuff is that you can totally hear how her music and lyrics have matured and evolved over the past decade. But nothing beats seeing her live. I can't say enough good stuff about her.

FEFE DOBSON

another canadian, you have to hear: Kiss me fool, Take me away, revolution song

STACIE ORRICO

don't even know what she looks like or anything, but her song:

(there's gotta be) more to life is really cool

LIZ PHAIR

same thing, Why can't I

so those are my knew one, beside that i love:

Oh My! what a wonderfull thread :D

i started reading everyone's post but soon realized it'll take me the whole night (and i don't have much of it left anyway) so i'll just run here my list of favorites singers and hopefully i added someone new.. if not, oh well, i still love a good babble :p

Ani Difranco!!

i'll say it again and again, even thu i have no one around me to support me (my gf hates her :P and she's really unfamiliar here in the far forgotten Israel, i can't even buy her at the stors, Damn them!! had to go all the way to Germany to get some CD's, but will never regret it lol)

Alanis Morissette.

i loved her from the first moment, and i kept on buying her albums and i still love her! hehee, plus i got the pleasure of seeing her LIVE, and that is one unforgattable sight, up there in the top 10 events of my life!!

Jewel.

i dunno what's up with her these days but her older albums are just magnificent. amazing voice, great lyrics, her songs give me shivers sometimes.

Heather Nova.

'Oyster' is amazing. dunno much about the others.

Sarah B. from K'c Choice.

great band. got all their albums love em all! 'Cacoon Crash' is simply the perfect album from start to end.

Belly.

new for me and really amazing. just got one album (a collection) i dunno much about em but that one is truly a must buy!

Shirly Manson from Garbage.

oi what happened to that band i dunno, but it used to be exceptional. got the 2 first albums and they are both similar in the style, great rock. shirly used to be the hotteset bomb on this planet, with her amazing red hair and fashion taste, will someone PLS tell me what happened to them???

sarah M.

Madonna (long time ago, not at all now).

Anouk.

The Cranbarries.

No Doubt.

Michel Branch.

there are many more out there for me to know.. i'm sorry for any spellings :sleepy it's very late.. even thu i would probably still make some lol..

love to all kittens,

anat. :kitty

Oh I don't think we are necessarily segregating due to gender. I have lots of all guy bands that I think are great (point of order, I am the biggest Police fan you'll ever meet.)

I was just reading in the paper over the weekend that here we are in the post Lilith fair days and men still dominate the airwaves. So this thread is here to remind us that there is more to listen to or to direct Kittens to something that corporate radio won't play.

To that end allow me to recommend The Donnas. Not their sanitized for radio play stuff, but get a copy of their cover of Kiss' "Strutter.

I am also listening to Tom Jones' newest Greatest Hits album and he does a cover of Talking Head's "Burning Down the House" with Nina Persson of The Cardigans. She has a great voice and now I am going to have to find more of their work.

I would have to say Sleater-Kinney. I too am surprised at the lack of mention of them. Probably one of my most favorite bands of all time. Very cool women who rock.

absolutely kbk!

Janet, Carrie and Corin -- all the members of Sleater-Kinney -- rock! and they write their own songs.

also Beth (openly gay) lead singer of The Gossip "This ain't heaven honey, I ain't no saint" :) their live shows are incredible.

and Peaches is totally insane and loads of fun. smut made music as some would say.

Tracy and the Plastics electroclash before there was electroclash. really incredible live show. more like performance art. plus, Wynn, the lead singer is totally hot and openly gay.

can you tell I have a thing for indie music?? I could go on and on and on and on...

but I'll stop there. :)

A few I would have to mention are:

Lo-Ball - An all girl group who broke up but still rocks. They sort of made me think of The Eyeliners the first time I saw them on the 2001 Warped Tour, but then I decided they're different in that they rock a little harder.

The Eyeliners - Three girls rockin' out. That's all I can say there.

Some Girls - Three more girls who rock. I love Heidi Gluck and fell in love with her when I first saw her playing with her Indianapolis group The Pieces. She can sing and play bass as well as steel guitar among other things. Mmm. Plus, the other two members are Freda Love and Juliana Hatfield. It's almost self-explanatory that Some Girls is going to be awesome.

Tsunami Bomb - Agent M is incredibly drool worthy, and she can sing like it's nobody's business. They're just a four piece band now, but on their EP The Invasion From Within, they were a five piece and included other girl rocker Oobliette Sparks on Keyboards. Personally, I prefer them with the keyboards, but I still like the new album.

That's all I'll say for now. I could keep going, but it would probably get boring.

I adore her. She is a truly kickass individual. I'm going to lunch with her dad tomorrow. I just lost my job (*sniff*) and I heard Amy needs a personal assistant. Maybe he'd put in a good word for me.:pray That would be awesome.

I'm also in the group of I LOVE TORI. I saw her in New Orleans a couple years ago and it was just magical. It was the only concert I sat there and cried through.

I also enjoy Sarah McLachlan, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Lennon, Ani, I like Avril's CD but think she's annoying in person (but she's working with Ben from Evanescence so I can't wait to hear her new music)... I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of for now.

The Murmurs- I had forgotten about them for awhile. But their music is great, not real strong but just very enjoyable. And not to mention Leisha Haley who was in All over Me. Definetly good looking.

1. You Suck

2. Big Talker

The Indigo Girls-

What can I say. I started listening when I was 13 and basicly haven't stopped. I had my dreams come true when I got to meet them at the last concert I attened, and Amy Ray is definetly hot in person. As well as an amazing singer songwritter and the harmonies with Emily are perfection.

1. Closer to Fine

2. Galileo

3. Joking ( has anyone ever seen them play this live? I have been to almost 10 shows and never have heard it..)

Sarah McLachlan- Her voice has always been soothing. I am in love with the new albumn but has anyone noticed how she just isn't into preforming like she used to be? She just looked so tired and not interested on the AOL sessions interview, but who can blame her with all that happened. Amazing talent.

1. Posession

2. Vox

3. Stupid

4. World On Fire

Ani Difranco-

What can I say. I love old Ani songs more than new, but all in all she did it on her own and never sold out to a company.

The most amazing experience at a show I had was watching her and her guitar and singing Both Hands as an encore.

1. Both Hands

2. Not a Pretty Girl

3. Napoleon

Tracy Chapman-

I'm amazed she hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread. A copy of Crossroads was the first cd I ever got with the cd player I got on my 13th birthday. I finally got to see her with my dad a few years ago, and what an amazing show.

1. Fast Car

2. Gimme One Reason

3. Bridges

Sheryl Crow

Another amazing song writer, who knew she made it big singing back up for Michael Jackson?

Got to see her live at Lilith Fair, and she was even more amazing

1. Leaving Las Vegas

2. Strong enough

Tori Amos definetly needs an honorable mention yet again. Such raw energy. I think one needs to see her in concert to really understand. One woman, two pianos and a piano bench. I'm not complaining.

1. Playboy Mommy

2. Precious Things

3. Talula

I am walking out in the rain I am listening to the low moan of the dial tone again and I am getting no where with you and I won't let it go and I won't get through, with both hands...ani d

I've never heard of Magic Dirt, I'll have to check them out.

I've seen Beth Orton live three times, and even though the last two times she did exactly the same set-list, she was still great. She comes across as a really lovely down-to-earth person, and I immediately buy every cd she releases.

The Waifs are one of the best live bands in the world right now, imho. They haven't been here since the summer, and it's already been way too long since I've seen them.

I'll take this opportunity to plug a couple of people involved with my favorite band at the moment, Broken Social Scene. Metric is a band fronted by Emily Haines, who sometimes sings with BSS, they have an ep and a full length cd out that you can get from their website, ilovemetric.com. And Leslie Feist, who also sings and plays with BSS when she's available writes wonderful songs and has an amazing voice. I just love her. She has a new solo cd coming out in the spring, look for it

ETA: Yes indeed, Neko Case is is always great, esp. with the New Pornographers. I've seen them many times, and you haven't lived until you've heard Neko sing Heart songs, even when she can't remember all the words. What a voice. If you liked the Organ, you might check out another new Vancouver band called The Gay, highly recommended.

Okay guys, Beth Orton just hasn't got as big enough mention as I wanted so here goes.

Coming from a completely obsessed fan of hers who listens at least one of her albums every day I hope you can fully appreciate this womans talent. She has the most gorgeous, soulful, heavenly voice (which makes her recording label very appropriate) and the music she manages to come up with completely blows me away. Her collaboration with Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams in Daybreaker was amazing. It goes without saying that all of her songs are my favourites, but the particular ones which send shivers down my spine are: Touch Me With Your Love, Galaxy Of Emptiness, So Much More, Pass In Time, Central Reservation, Mt Washington, Ted's Waltz and Paris Train.

I'll add a couple more who I think deserve a mention;

Adalita from Magic Dirt is fricking incredible live and pretty goddamn sexy to boot.

Vikki and Donna Simpson from The Waifs, man they just enjoy their music so much and you can see/hear it when they play.

Skulker: Just gotta love the all girl rock bands

oh, i love this thread. kittens have good taste :) my picks are as follows:

the gossip i met beth ditto, the lead singer, this summer. they were playing a 21+ show and she tried to sneak me in, but security would have none of it. i ended up standing outside, but she did dedicate a song to us youngins ("this is for the kids outside. what the fuck were we thinking?"). she is a sweetheart, and man, does she have a *voice*. she sings like her life depends on it. i've seen them live a few times and as someone said before me, their shows are *so* awesome. recommendations: where the girls are, all my days, ain't it the truth

sleater-kinney these girls rock, seriously. recommendations: words and guitar, sympathy, the end of you

cat power my friends say she is depressing. however, i like her a lot and find her music quite comforting when i'm down. she will pull your heartstrings. recommendations: naked if i want to, colors and the kids, what would the community think

all girl summer fun band they sing about grass skirts and parallel parking. they have hand claps in their songs. what is not to love?!

oh, seurat i saw the organ this summer when they opened for the new pornographers (btw, neko case is in the new pornographers, and is another lady who needs to be mentioned in this thread). they were great.

The one and only Janis Joplin, can anyone ever listen to 'Little Girl Blue' and not fall in love with this raspy voice bellying such a raw power and heartbreaking vulnerabilty?

Tori Amos because she draws you in and torments you and shows you beauty.

Edith Piaf - such a small and frail body for such an amazing voice and big heart.

Any fans of Vienna Teng here? She is so frickin' amazing. I think I'm addicted to her CDs. IT's a medical condition. I also like Fionna Apple and Joni Mitchell. Tori's cool, though I like Vienna better of the piano-playing two (less anger but still all of the angst). I used to like Jewel before she started taking off all her clothes and making dance music, and I still enjoy Sarah McLauchlan quite a bit though I'm sure I completelyy mispelled her name.

Dar Williams - I really love her, her lyrics are great. A few songs to download to try her out :whistle (though I do request if you like her buy one of her CDs, she's not exactly rich like a lot of music peeps.)

End of Summer, What Do You Hear in These Sounds, The Babysitter, When I Was a Boy... basically any of her stuff that you find I could probably recommend. Though honestly wouldn't necessarily recommend her live stuff. Mainly because her main strength there is in the stories she tells between songs and they dont leave those in, she usually performs in venues with fairly crappy acoustics, and the people recording them are usually random audience members so the recording quality is fairly bad too.

Glad to see so many mentions of my darling Indigo Girls. I've been listening to the new album practically non-stop!

Others I like: PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, Michelle Malone, Skunk Anansie. I have a playlist of rock grrls on my computer and as well as the afore-mentioned are bands like The Gossip, Subdebs, Krezip, Glitter Mini 9, Bikini Kill, Concrete Blonde, and a lot more I can't recall at the minute.

Reading this thread reminds me that I should go over to the playlist thread and fill that up with more obsccure faves of mine. But for today in this thread let me put forward two names for your attention. Boyskout is a all woman band from S.F. (which always seems to have a great band scene going, must be the air), they have a cd out recently on Alive and they have lots of energy, very good songs and are highly recommended.

Garrison Star has been a favorite of mine for nearly ten years now, she has a new cd out and is touring again, in fact I'll be seeing her play tonight.:) She's a powerful singer, songwriter and guitarist and she most certainly rocks.

Finally I've been meaning to mention on here somewhere that I saw the indigo Girls interviewed on Charlie Rose about a week ago and they were wonderful, as you'd expect

ETA. Despite the risk, however slight, of them turning out to be another Tatu, I felt I should add here that Boyskout also has a video on their cd with lots of girl-girl kissing etc. They are also taking part in a queercore tour, which would seem to indicate that they are for real. This has nothing to do with why I like them, the music is enough for me, but in case anyone feels like checking them out because of this, I think the website is boyskout.com

Blondie just released their new album, The Curse of Blondie. It's been five years since the last new stuff from them, and I was afraid they were going to disappear. Any Blondie fans who might have been disappointed by No Exit will probably like this one. No Exit seemed to have about one good song, but The Curse of Blondie...wow, I think it's amazing. It's much more consistent than No Exit was.

It sounds exactly like I think Blondie should sound in 2004. It's a classic, yet updated, sound. And it really suits them. The first single ("Good Boys") is instantly among my favorite Blondie songs of all time. I've been playing the whole album to death for two days now.

If any of y'all are feeling multicultural, I strongly urge you to check out a South African rocker called Karen Zoid. I saw her live over the weekend and the experience bordered on spiritual. Amazing voice, a combination of real 'rock-chick' numbers and some intense, heart-wrenching ballads. She had us all standing on our chairs and screaming the lyrics at the tops of our voices. Her two albums are Poles Apart and Chasing the Sun. I recommend the latter, as it has a larger base of English content (she sings in both English and Afrikaans).

cheers,
