V for Vendetta

Postby justin » Tue Mar 21, 2006 11:12 am

I've just been to see this film and it's very good. It's set in a future in which America is in a civil war and Britain is under a totalitarian government.

The main character is a masked revolutionary called V who is trying to bring down the government by recreating the gunpowder plot of 1605.

As I said this is a very good film. It was written by the Warchowski brothers (who of course made Bound & The Matrix) and stars Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman & John Hurt.

The thing that attracted me to this film was this line
People shouldn't be afraid of their governments,
Governments should be afraid of their people.

Anyone not going to see this film will be charged with sedition :smash

I'm really looking forward to this, but I'll be waiting for the DVD. It's actually based on the comics/graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. I just hope it's a reasonably faithful adaptation.

Having seen the film and read the graphic novel, I'd say it's a reasonably faithful adaptation, but a few bits of artistic licence have been added, and certain characters changed around. Dietrich for example is a wee bit different in the book!
I thought Hugo Weaving was superbly cast as V, he really inhabits the role and has great fun with the borderline psychotic :)

I loved this movie. I'm a comic fan, but have never read any of Alan Moore's work. I think I'm going to try to find this tomorrow, now. :bow
Hugo Weaving did give a fantastic performance, but I was really struck by Natalie Portman. I've always been ambivalent towards her, but this movie has tipped the scale. I am now a fan.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to re-read my copy of 1984. ;-)

It was surprising how much pathos and emotion Hugo Weaving was able to put into his character. I would say though that EVie is really at the centre of the movie.
Of course the plot is pretty far fetched, I mean a Britain where the government routinely monitors your every move, removes civil liberties, and sends people off to be tortured in detention centres? Ludicrous... >:)

This was an excellent film, one of the best I've seen in a long while. I too was pretty ambivalent about Natalie Portman but she freakin' rocked in this movie! And the gay/lesbian subplots were so heartbreaking.
As one, they turn to the soda machine. It flies back into the door like a cannonball. Willow looks at it, at Tara. She doesn't let go of her hand.

So I went to see the movie last weekend! Without a doubt the best film I have watched in a long time.

The acting was superb all round (especially Hugo Weaving as V) and the story was intelligent, thought-provoking and very moving. For the action buffs, the fight scenes were exciting and well-staged but it focused on story and character, rather than flashy set-pieces, and is a far stronger film for it.

The thinly veiled attacks on the Bush and Blair are well made and I found the ending to be very moving indeed.

I highly recommend this stunning film!!

I just saw this movie in theatres last night. I loved it! There are moments where you think "gosh this could be the matrix," but mostly just the fight scenes. I think the plot is wonderful.
The gay/lesbian subplot was totally unexpect (for me anyway) but it was an awesome story.

Anyhoo, looking forward to the movie, heee. Aparently I heard there were bad reviews about V for Vendetta...something about it being boring...but who cares what they think. I think it shall be awesome.

Well, I went to see this tonight. I went with a friend who always fidgets through films, and who tries to tell me about her day when she gets bored in the middle.

She sat, eyes glued to the screen, all the way through.

I was expecting more action and less politics, I could see the Matrix-y stuff. I enjoyed it a lot, but was a bit annoyed by the mask, as I need eye contact and facial clues to emotions.

She sat, eyes glued to the screen, all the way through.

I don't really care whether it was technically good or bad, or whether the reviews said it was boring or derivative: I'm just glad she shut up and stayed still. :)

This is one of those movies I really want to see but for some reason, I haven't gotten around to doing so.
