Star Wars

Postby Jennpurr » Sun Nov 07, 2004 6:34 pm

I couldn't believe there wasn't a thread for Star Wars. If there is, I'm sorry for starting a new one. Feel free to delete this if it's a duplicate.

I grew up watching Star Wars. I think my favorite one is still Return of the Jedi. I like Empire Strikes Back as well, though. I can't really pick between them. RotJ is more exciting in some ways though.

I think my favorite NEW episode would have to be The Phantom Menace. I love Jar Jar, as those of you who know me well, know already. Attack of the Clones was good, too, however. I liked Natalie Portman more in the episode.

Has anyone see the teaser trailer for Episode III: Revenge of the Sith? It looks awesome. If anyone is interested in seeing the trailer for it, you can DL it here.

I can't wait for 2005 now!

The episode III trailers look really good. You may also want to check out the game trailer though there are some spoilers (though nothing that isn't already obvious from the trailer and watching A New Hope):

Episode III - The Video Game

This movie looks far more serius than the first two of the latter trilogy and may be the first to come to the level of the original trilogy. This will be THE SCIFI film to see in spring 2005 bar none and accept no substitutes.

Well I could not believe we did not have a thread for it either, so I looked, but there is none. Go figure. I know Star Wars has been discussed, but it must have been in one of the general movie threads. It certainly deserves it´s own thread.

I loved the original three, but that was back in the days when I was much more into sci fi than I am nowadays. I did not like part one, the only thing that made it worthwhile for me was Queen Amidala. I enjoyed part two much more, again thanks to Natalie Porter, also to Yoda kicking ass, but last and not least (look away Jennpurr :p ) because it had only a teeny tiny bit of Jar Jar. I despise Jar Jar, he annoys me more than Wesley Crusher and Neelix combined and then multiplied by ten and I hate them both with a passion.

Return of the Jedi remains my favourite of the series so far, although I wish they had never taken Darth Vader´s mask off, to see that fat old man and to not hear that great powerful voice ruined the character for me for a while, I got over it though.

I saw the preview to part three on tv a few days ago and it looked good. I noticed Amidala wearing the ´donut do´. Hee, Carrie Fisher must be commiserating with Natalie over that one. I love Carrie Fisher, her comments about her role in Star Wars crack me up. Anyway, I will definitely go see part three, I get the impression it will be better than the first two.

I love the original trilogy and it was my favorite of all time...until I saw LOTR ;)

I have seen EP 1 and 2 in theaters and have them on DVD and I will do the same with EP 3. While EP 1 and 2 aren't on par with the original trilogy, they do have their moments.

In EP 1, Darth Maul was a great villain and his double-bladed lightsaber is the coolest thing ever. His duel with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn is one of the greatest fights ever.

In EP 2, the battle with all the Jedi was great and the final fight between Count Dooku and Anakin and Obi-Wan was great. But when Yoda showed up and they got into it, it was just awesome.

I downloaded the trailer for EP 3 last week and it looks good. Like Sam said, this one may have a shot at being on the same level as the original trilogy.

When it comes to Jar Jar, I'm with Garfield. I cannot stand him. He just annoys the hell out of me.

And oh yeah, having Natalie Portman in the new trilogy sure doesn't hurt :blush

Does anyone want to speculate on how graphic they will actually get while showing what happens to Anakin as he is becoming Darth Vader?

I imagine they will try and make it as realistic as Smeagol turning into Gollum. With him, some of the stages in between were more disgusting than the end result. Bring it on. :D

I doubt that they will be very graphic in episode III. I envision Anakin falling and then cut to the robotic bits of Darth Vader being installed. Lucas in the DVD release of Star wars got rid of the minimal gore they had with phaser blasts: (not sure if these links have already been posted)

DVD Planet's list of changes for the DVD release:

Part 1 - A New Hope

Part 2 - Empire Strikes

Part 3 - Return of the Jedi

In this instance, I think he will keep it very tame for the kiddies. Hopefully the adult themes will make it watcheable for the rest of us. I'm glad I have the original version of the movies on widescreen VHS as these remain my fav versions.

Me too. Worst "Star Wars" cliche IMHO and a racist riff on Caribean folks (like me). Uggghhh. Hopefully Episode III will have Vader/Anakin kill Jar Jar horribly if bloodlessly (see above)

My ranking of Star wars movies goes as follows:

1. Empire Strikes Back (still the best one IMH0)

2. A New Hope

3. Attack of the Clones tied with Return of the Jedi

(not a big Return fan)

4. Phantom Menace

I saw Attack of the Clones projected in Digital format and that really enhanced the film for me since it's mostly computer imagery anyway.

Damn, I think you are right about Anakin´s transformation not being too graphic. Makes sense if they want to keep it viewable for all ages.

I have only seen part 1 and 2 once in the cinema, that makes it a bit hard to really compare them to the original 3 which I have seen many times, well not when it comes to part one, that sucked ass. I might get the DVDs anyway depending on how good part 3 will be. Not looking forward to losing Amidala. I hope she gets sucked into a wormhole and comes out at the other end in part 7. Ok so it will be a bit weird with her kids being older than she, but damn, I love her character.

Are there any concrete plans for part 7? I hope that if they ever make one, the original cast (those that are still alive anyway) will be back, if only because I´d love to see Carrie Fisher in another movie.

Dr.G-Lucas and his entire camp are saying Episode III is it as far as movies go. But the rumor is, a TV show is a real possibility either animated like the Clone Wars mini-series or live action. Either series would be either post-episode VI or Knights of the Old Republic-esque timeline wise. It'll be at least 2006 before we see something whichever way they choose.

Jar-Jar was not meabnt to be a srereotype of blacks regardless of where they are from.He is,but it was not intentional.

Star Wars is a pulp serial,a very well done pulp serial but a pulp serial(as is the Indiana Jones movies) and Lucas draws heavily from the serials he grew up.

The nemodians and Jar-Jar(as well as the gungans) are based on archetypes(really stereotypes) from pulp serials.

Jar Jar is the dumb, clumsy native that Tarzan always had to save from his own stupidity.

The nemodians are the evil asian mad scientists trying to destroy/conquer the world.

Star Wars is heavily inspired by flash gordan conquers the universe and ming the merciless was the epitome of this streotype.

George obviously sees Jar Jar and the nemodians as nothing more than tributes to his favorites and cannot understand the uproar.

George is not racist,just clueless.

Never said Lucas is racist. And regardless of Lucas' intent or clueness (which is an explanation not an excuse), I still found Jar Jar to be an offensive racist stereotype, go figure. OMMV. There's alot of good to be emulated from the pulp serials but their sexism and racism are NOT two of them IMHO. They managed to get thru the first 3 films without overt crap like that so I wonder what changed. In any case most of the offensive stuff is "comic" relief stuff that should be in short supply in episode III so we should be spared further cringe worthy stuff.

One good thing about Jar Jar being so poorly done was it let Peter Jackson steal Lucas' thunder by presenting the first actual good digital character in the form of Gollum. PJ certainly became the lord of the genre films dethroning star wars and getting a raft of oscars. LOTR may not have had much diversity but it did not overtly offend either. Star Wars could have been great if Lucas had concentrated on good characters and plot rather than making kiddie films and selling toys IMHO. Still I have hopes that the last film will make it up to the level of the first released trilogy.

Re: Star Wars

Postby urnofosiris » Mon Nov 15, 2004 11:45 am

I am a Dutch cheesehead, but even I noticed the stereotype that was Jar Jar. The fact that Lucas did not scratch his head and ask himself whether this character might come across as a racial stereotype (not to mention more than a little annoying) puzzles me. It is not like this is first movie and he is a naive filmmaker unaware of the impact movies and the way characters are portrayed can have.

Agreed about LotR, to me, the effects and the LotR trilogy itself wiped the floor with Star Wars (I still like Star Wars, but I love LotR). The main hero characters were all white boys and a very few girls, but so were the villains: Saruman, Denethor etc. I guess PJ can be blamed for casting according to the book so closely in this regard, when he did dare take some liberties with the original book elsewhere. Lucas wrote his own characters. Now Jar Jar is not a villain of course, but I have a lot of trouble as viewing him as a positive character.

Anyway, what´s done is done. I really look forward to the third part and I am definitely going to watch it in the cinema. This is the kind of movie that has to be watched on a big screen. The preview looks promising. I love good special effects, but maybe Lucas was too focused on them (and I was not all that impressed with them) in part 1 and lost track of the story and the characters. I think part 2 was better at balancing these things and I hope part 3 will be as good as the original trilogy, hopefully better.

This is all fine and good to be talking about, BUT I don't like Jar Jar for any other reason except, he's one of my favorite characters. I didn't bring up the subject to start up a racial discussion, which I can see valid and invalid points in the posts that all of you have made.

Jar Jar might be annoying to most of you, but he's so darn clumsy that you can't help but laugh at him.

If you don't like him, that's fine. I happen to like him, so... that's just my own opinion.

Can we drop the talk of racial issues and just get back to talking about Star Wars?

Am I the only person who is about to explode from anticipation for this movie? This is the episode that will tie everything together. This is the episode that will finally put a face to the emperor, although most of us know who he is from PM and AotC. This is the episode where we see Anakin embrace his role as Vader, and in my own opinion, it will be graphically inclined. There's no way it can't be. I'm sure Lucas won't show us blood and gore, but I'm sure he will show us a fair amount of graphical nature.

I can't wait.

Either way, this will be the episode that we will all be talking about years and years from now.

It doesn't really matter why Jar Jar was brought up, the issue arose and it's a perfectly valid topic to discuss. No one has to read it or like it. It's not offensive, it's someone's point of view, just as liking jar jar is a valid topic.

Oh I can help it, I did not even smile at him. That´s just my opinion and I am absolutely sure I would have said so even if you had never mentioned him at all. He took up so much screentime in part 1 it is impossible for me to ignore him, no matter how much I want to. Anyway, like I said, I do look forward to part 3 for all the reasons you stated. There are so many questions that will get answered this episode. I regret it a little that there won´t be another trilogy after this one, but I am glad parts 1 to 3 got made.

Re: Star Wars Questionnaire

Postby Munchkin » Thu Nov 18, 2004 8:59 pm

OK, I'll bite. As disappointing and contradictorily inept as the prequels have been so far, the original trilogy still holds a special place in my heart after all this time. So here goes.

1. Favorite episode: The Empire Strikes Back

2. Favorite character: Obi-Wan Kenobi, as originally embodied by the late great Sir Alec Guinness.

3. Favorite quote: A tie between Obi-Wan's "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." and Yoda's "No. There is another."

4. Favorite scene: Yoda showing the whiny self-pitying Luke exactly how the Force really works by levitating the sunken X-Wing fighter out of the swamp, aided by the all-time best passage of John Williams' music ever.

5. Favorite villian: Darth Vader, particularly in Empire where he gets to kill inept Imperial officers with impunity, strings along Lando by repeatedly "altering" their bargain, gets to ride on the Super Star Destroyer this time, and has his very own theme music of "the Imperial March".

6. Favorite species: Wookies! It must be Wookies!

7. The character I would be: Obi-Wan Kenobi, just cause it's most respectable to be as old and (mostly) wise as he was.

8. The species I would be: Human, which I like just fine already.

9. How old was I when I first saw Star Wars: 3

10. Favorite Battle: The first lightsaber duel between Vader and Luke in Empire, which shows a gradual build-up from Vader toying with the weaker Luke by using only one hand to hold his lightsaber in the carbon freezing chamber, then progressing to blatant cheating by using the Force to hit Luke with machinery parts in the reactor room, and finally having enough of playing around and just attacking Luke mercilessly until he cuts off his hand. And then Vader delivers the REAL killing blow with just five words. Classic.

I finally bought the DVDs of the original trilogy last week and I just finished watching them. It´s been a while since I´ve seen them completely. I like the additions and changes here and there. Most of all I absolutely love the fact that they changed the old geezer ghost Anakin Skywalker with his younger version. Like I said before, watching Vader without his mask and hearing that weak cracked old voice ruined the character for me for a while, but this made up for it. What can I say, I like pretty men. I also think it is a nice way to directly link the old trilogy to the newer trilogy.

Carrie Fisher is so yummie, I think she should have been the yedi knight instead of Luke, but you can´t have it all I guess. She still kicked more ass I say. I will have to change my mind about not having a favourite battle scene to the Luke/Vader fight from RotY. The build up in that fight combined with the music made it a chilling thrilling battle. The moment where Darth Vader finally turns on the emperor, lifts him up as if he weighs nothing and throws him down still moves me. Looking forward to the third part all the more now.

Thanks Warduke!!! Great pix! While I'm not as excited about Star Wars anymore (LOTR has taken it's place as the genre trilogy), it does look like it will be more serious and dramatic this installment. I certainly vote for no humor as Lucas' idea of funny is a far cry from mine (goofy stereotypes of me and mine don't do it for me). In any case, the rise of Vader should not allow for any for any more of kiddy stuff ala Phantom or "romance" ala Clones. My vote for Anakin showing how evil he has become is his eviserating Jar Jar on screen well that's not actually evil but it would be a crowd pleaser ala Gandalph whacking Denethor with his staff. :evil

DrG: Oh yeah. I just loved Carrie Fisher as Leia. I hope she gets back in front of the camera and does comedy.

Speaking of Star Wars humor, I saw "George Lucas in Love" recently and it is hilarious. The guy they got to play Lucas is a dead ringer for thin Lucas in the 70's before he became pudgy. They should do a stamp of George Lucas before and after. In any case no Star Wars fan should miss that flick.

Never knew he had a movie made about him and he is not even dead yet. Speaking of the man himself, not that I want to promote cosmetic surgery or anything, but I wish he would have that second chin vacuumed away or grow some hair on it instead of trimming his beard around it. That sack of fat wiggling under his face makes him look like a pelican.

I like the spoilery pics, especially the one with Anakin and the emperor posing with their plastic light sabers, looks silly.
