Famous Queer Folk - The Gossip/Rumor thread

Postby xita » Sat Sep 25, 2004 9:31 pm

This is a thread to discuss the potential queerness of actors, actresses, famous folk etc. Out of respect for the people that might read this board, refrain from gossip about Alyson or Amber. Thank you.

Thanks, xita! :kiss

Since this thread was started at my request, I'll bring over the questions I asked in requesting it:

How are Rosie and Kelly doing? Who's Ellen dating now? Are Melissa and Tammy Lynn having kids? What's Amanda Bearse up to lately? [Is Portia de Rossi really gay, or just a little nuts? (That's kinda the way she strikes me, though she looked great at the Emmys! ;) ] Is Helen Hunt playing on our team again? Is Jodie ever going to come out? Just who is the lucky woman dating Cynthia Nixon? :heart And then there are those persistent rumors about the junior Senator from New York . . . :sh

GG Someone else will have to come up w/ burning questions re guys! :p Out

I'd also be interested in hearing Kittens' opinions on gossip (especially of the outing sort). What crosses the boundaries of privacy? Good taste? (Or are there any such boundaries?) What makes you scream "TMI! TMI!" :rolleyes

Are there sources that you trust? Discount? (If News of the World talks about any gay celebs from Outer Space, I'll be taking it w/ a planetful of salt! :grin ) What about---sans any legit "gossip" source---celebrities who just give off a gay vibe? (Sets off your long-distance gaydar! :dumbo )

Or does the very concept of gossip---in our celebrity-obsessed culture---leave you gagging (or snoozing)? (And what are the differences between, say, American and British gossip?)

Discuss! :laugh

ETA: does anyone else love "blind items"? I know them from Michael Musto (at The Village Voice), but I'm sure other gossip mavens use 'em too. They often take the form of a question, ala "Just what Hollywood hunk---from last year's box-office bonanza---was seen snogging his boyfriend at the East Village's seediest gay dive? What leading lady, while literally at Cannes, made a figurative voyage to Lesbos (leaving several broken Sapphic hearts in her wake)? And what steps are the producers of her next movie taking to hush it up? What screen legend doesn't know that his wife legendarily keeps a gal pal on the side?" Stuff like this: they're so fun to guess at! :p

I love blind items, years ago I read alt.showbiz.gossip every day and that was a big thing I loved.

I don't know about all the questions you asked but Portia has my curiosity. I think those pictures proved she is into gals, but I am not sure what she is doing now.

Heh. Cool thread. GG, Ellen Degeneres has been with actress/photographer Alexandra Hedison for about 4 years now. They live together and seem to enjoy a rather low-profile existence, which is a nice change for Ellen after...well, you know.

Amy

Hedison info: us.imdb.com/name/nm0373312/

ETA: I'm also a sucker for rumors about who was queering it up in Hollywood's "Golden Age." Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, even Gary Cooper (before he turned all creepy and Republican) -- you know the stories. There's even a lesser known rumor about Myrna Loy having a bit of fun in her youth. :drool I could die a happy woman just imagining Myrna with another woman. Sigh. Anyway, I love those old stories, too.

Oh I did not know who Cynthia Nixon was, at least I did not know that is the actress´s name. I´ve seen her in Sex in the City of course.

I recall reading on the Kitten several years ago that Samantha Fox is a lesbian. I recently saw her on Dutch TV. She looked much better than she did 20 years ago, she looked tough in a good way.

Amy:

Thanks for posting that link for Alex Hedison. When you go to that page and select More Photos there are a bunch of really cute ones of Ellen & Alex together.

Speaking of rumors - anyone ever hear those old rumors about Wynonna Judd? They were along the lines of somebody-knew-somebody-who-met-her-at-a-party (the same type you used to hear about Whitney Houston). Of course, no one could ever produce the name of the person who was actually AT the party and met the celebrity and her girlfriend.

Sometimes it's difficult to separate truth from wishful thinking.

From the NY Daily News...

Quote:
For Cynthia, romance is academic

Cynthia Nixon's mystery girlfriend is a mystery no more.

Education activist Christine Marinoni is the lady who captured the heart of the "Sex & the City" star, sources tell us.

Friends say Marinoni, the New York City director of the Alliance for Quality Education, and the Emmy-winning actress fell in love while fighting for increased funding and smaller classes in public schools.

"They share a strong commitment to improving the lives of children in the city and the state," said a friend.

Nixon, who sends her two children to public schools, has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Marinoni at several Alliance events. Before heading up the Alliance's downstate branch, Marinoni was director of the Parent Organizing Consortium, a citywide grass-roots group.

In 1996, she and a partner opened Park Slope's Rising Cafe, described in the Lambda Line newsletter as a "lesbian-owned and -operated business" where people can "hear or even make poetry and music, meet friends for coffee or beer." The cafe has since closed.

Nixon and Danny Mozes, the father of her children, split in June 2003 after 15 years together. Her romance with Marinoni is said to have blossomed last January.

Friends say Nixon divides her time between Marinoni's pad and her own upper West Side apartment, where her children live and where "Christine sometimes comes along on playdates," says a pal.

Marinoni didn't return calls. Nixon's reps declined to comment.

I have this really interesting book, titled “The Vinyl Closet –Gays in the Music World” by Boze Hadleigh. Published in 1990 so a tad ancient but still..... Not surprisingly, most of the people he describes declined to be interviewed (defamation of character, libel, slander,etc.etc. ensuing lawsuits –no, no, not a lot has changed since :spin ) or agreed on the condition that fake names were used. There was this piece which I will

quote:

”The following item, in “The Clothes Make the Man Department” appeared in January, 1988 in the Hollywood Kids’ Newsletter: ‘Rumor around town deals with a top-secret T.V. club in Hollywood. It’s at this undisclosed location that some of Hollywoods’s top luminaries meet every few weeks in drag! There’s no hanky-panky, mind you, just good old-fashioned socializing and dancing, according to one source who says, ‘it’s the best kept secret in tinseltown. You’d flip out if you saw the list of big names who belong!’ After much prying we did discover that some of the regulars include that top Hollywood-director and his actress wife who just love to cross-dress, and that famous male TV comic.’

Said director’s wife, once a top musical superstar, years ago found her name in the gay magazine In Touch, among a list of actresses and singers reportedly lesbian or bisexual. Rumors have long circulated in Hollywood that the sweet-throated diva and her husband are busy bisexuals in their private life, as well as frequent professional collaborators. The singer-actress originally consented to be interviewed for this book, then changed her mind most politely and firmly. I was later informed, without seeking the informations, that she’d requested her friends and associates not to divulge anything about her or, particularly, her husband (who may personally have K.O.ed the interview). But I never sought any further facts on the woman, whose career peaked –literally- in the mid-1960s. Though firmly entrenched as part of the Hollywood scene, the actress-singer, her director and their marriage have a certain pertinence to the world of music.”

Unquote

Now: I am quite convinced as to the identity of described couple but in order to validate my “suspicion” (for lack of a better word) is there anybody else to back me up? Who do you think it is/they are?

You know, concrete, that I read that description thinking "I think I know who this is," until I came to this phrase:

Quote:
the woman, whose career peaked –literally- in the mid-1960s

. . . which removed all doubt! :lmao [Hint: husband and wife actually collaborated on a movie about cross-dressing!] The thing is, didn't said actress-singer and her husband divorce some years ago (long before 1988)? So while the blind item is pretty "duh", I'm still not sure how accurate it is (though it might go aways to explain Rosie O'Donnell's childhood crush on the actress! :p )

GG Still don't know who it is? Just look at this line: "the actress-singer, her director and their marriage have a certain pertinence to the world of music.” Now, replace "world" w/ another word! :eyebrow Out

xita, for some reason, I've had a crush on Julie Andrews for year and years, long before I figured out I was gay. I've had a crush on "that redhead" even longer. I cried when "that redhead" left the Gary Moore show. I think that was long before she had her own variety show.

Funny to think they're rumored to be a couple.

Go figure, maybe I had gaydar a long time ago and just didn't know it.

Yes, G.G., the “literally peaking” thing was of course a dead give-away! Mr.and Mrs.B.Edwards-J.Andrews are to my knowledge still very married, yes. You know who I always pegged as a lesbian? Lindsay Wagner! Yes, the (les)Bionic Woman! She got married 4 times, divorced as many times; each marriage lasted approximately 2 to 3 years, hmmmm, one has to wonder :hmm . Somehow she always gave/gives me that vibe. It’s not wishful thinking ‘cause I’m not particularly a fan or anything. Just a strong hunch.

And..... Gabriella Sabatini, must include her! I had the pleasure of seeing her playing tennis last week. Very, very yummy :heart . Interesting fact: Lucy Lawless (Xena –as if that needs further explanation) has stated that she modeled Xena’s posture, walk, after Gabriella Sabatini. Very butch indeed & good thinking Lucy!

I don't know the story of your avatar, xita: are we in the midst of some kind of Gabriella Sabatini revival? ;)

Yes, LL gives props to GS . . . however, there's the kicker: everytime I have heard Lucy give the quote (regarding Xena) it always includes the phrase "like Gabriella Sabatini . . . but with brains." (Uff da! :shock )

GG GS-fans: I just report the news! :peace Out

"The Pearl of the Pampas": that title always cracked me up! :)

Oh, speaking of "not getting the lesbian obsession with": whatever was the deal re Anne Murray? Is short(ish) hair and a low voice enough, cuz she never seemed very gay to me (but what do I know?) :confused (Then again, Whitney Houston never seemed very gay to me either. But that may have more to do with the fact that being a crackhead---pardon my bluntness, but c'mon---is just so unappealing). YMMV.

Xita - I never heard the one about Linda Hamilton's twin sister. Intriguing...

There have been rumors about Whitney Houston forever, but personally, she's one I never wanted to claim. I really shouldn't judge. I think she's one of those folks who became a mega-star way too young. She was bound to implode.

There have always been rumors about Anne Murrey too. Years ago, I saw a clip of Anne Murrey and kd lang singing a duet. I can't remember the song (Snowbird maybe?), nor can I remember the patter they engaged in prior to singing but I do remember cracking up at the double-entendre. Not to mention the love-sick look on kd's face. It was cute

I thought Linda Hamilton´s twin is married and has kids. Not that this means she can´t be gay. I just never heard a rumor about her before. There are some interesting names on that site. No idea that Christina Aguilera would be so interested in the opposite of the opposite sex. I am missing quite a few though. I see Mel B but not Mel C. Anyway, Samantha Fox is gay, assuming those quotes are actually hers.

The Princess Diaries chick comes out

Postby Kieli » Tue Oct 05, 2004 9:54 pm

The Princess Diaries' Heather Matarazzo comes out in this month's Advocate:

Welcome to the house, doll!

Quote:

|| coming out 2004 ||

Welcome to the house, doll!

In an exclusive interview, Heather Matarazzo traces her path from Welcome to the Dollhouse to costarring in The Princess Diaries, coming out in the Daily News, and winning the right to marry the love of her life

By Anne Stockwell

Excerpted from The Advocate, October 12, 2004

A word of advice: Never, ever bet against Heather Matarazzo. Professionally, the 21-year-old Long Island native is already making her mark as one of the most distinctive character actors of her generation. She stunned critics with her stoic star turn as junior high outcast Dawn Wiener in the indie hit Welcome to the Dollhouse (filmed when she was 11 and released a few years later), a performance that would win her a 1997 Independent Spirit Award. More recently she’s been holding her own in the biggest of big-screen enterprises with Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews in Disney’s Princess Diaries movies. In between, Matarazzo has worked like crazy, snagging roles in some 20 movies—including this year’s Christian-high-school comedy Saved!—and logging hundreds of hours of television on series such as Roseanne and the short-lived but critically acclaimed Now and Again.

Matarazzo’s got just as much moxie when it comes to her life. This summer, when the New York Daily News asked that personal question so many closeted actors fear, Matarazzo stepped right up and told them she was “crazy madly in love” with a woman. Not just truthful but joyously truthful—how fabulous can one young actor be?

On a sunny afternoon at Los Angeles’s Crescent Hotel, sitting down with The Advocate for her first gay-press interview, Matarazzo turns out to be fabulous indeed—petite, with a dancer’s carriage, a graceful mane of hair, and a fresh intelligence leavened with a fizzy sense of humor. And she’s offering no apologies, thank you. “I’ve always liked women,” she says with a smile. “That’s the way God made me. That’s how I am.”

Had you planned to give that big beautiful gay quote to the Daily News?

No, it just came out. I’m in love! And I’m not going to lie. I’m not going to be like, Crap, I have a girlfriend; I’m not going to say anything.

Did you know you were interested in girls when you were little?

Oh, yeah! Totally.

Were you out to your friends and family?

I tried to come out to my mom when I was younger, but it didn’t work out so well, because denial is a powerful thing.

She thought it was a phase?

Yeah. But everyone’s got to go through their own journey. I went through mine. I went through that self-hatred. A lot of people have to go through a period of self-hatred before embracing who they really are.

So can we hear one teen dating adventure?

My first girlfriend—I was, like, 16 or 17, and it was the first time I ever really had a girlfriend. We dated for, like, two years, and her parents were disgusted and hated me. [Laughs] I had to jump out of a window when her mom came home early one day. They lived in a one-story house, but it still had some height. She pushed me off the sill and whispered, “Call me later!”

How are things with you and your partner and your family now?

I haven’t really talked about it with my extended family. But my mom is a 65-year-old Roman Catholic Italian that grew up with very traditional values. And it’s been hard for her. When she saw the Daily News article, it was really hard for her. ’Cause she’s one of those women that’s about “Keep it in the family.”

I bet she’s thrilled with your success, though.

My mom is very, very supportive. She’ll say to you, she’s proud of my success, but she’s proud that I’m her daughter first.

The full article is in the paper issue. It's worth reading as this abridged article leaves out some good stuff.

Time flies by when the Devil drives.
